Mobile Suit Gundam Wing - Operation 4

Feudal concepts of personal honor collide with cynical realpolitik as the 49-part saga of five heroic Mobile Suit pilots unfolds against the efforts of the Romefeller Foundation to control both Earth and the orbiting Space Colonies through their puppet military entity, OZ. After agonizing over the purity of their motives, Heero and Zechs duke it out in their Mobile Suits in the wastes of Antarctica. Relena arrives and denounces their duel as futile; she also discovers Zechs is really her long-lost brother. Zechs later loses his stylized helmet, which somehow shatters his bond to OZ leader Treize Marquis. Meanwhile, the merciless Lady Une instigates an elaborate scheme to convince the leaders of the Colonies that OZ has become a benevolent organization dedicated to peace. The leaders are taken in by her assumed charms and quickly fall into line with her plan. Une turns them against the Gundam Pilots and kidnaps the five mad scientist-engineers who created the Gundams. As prisoners, they're assigned to create even more powerful suits: Mercurius and Vayeate. Pilots Heero and Trowa use different strategies to infiltrate this operation and end up in direct conflict in a cliffhanger ending. Contains these episodes: 16. "The Sorrowful Battle," 17. "Betrayed by Home, Far Away," 18. "Tallgeese Destroyed," 19. "Assault on Barge," 20. "The Lunar Base Infiltration." Rated 13 and up for occasional profanity and violence, largely restricted to machines attacking each other. --Charles Solomon

Great series.......2004-03-27
BASIC PLOT:
The Gundam Wing series follows the exploits of five young men who pilot mobile suits against the forces of an organization seeking world domination. There's Heero (the main man), Duo (the cool guy), Trowa (the quiet guy), Quatre (the peace-lover), and Wufei (the overconfident hothead.) The battle rages on for forty-nine episodes, and as the series progresses, a number of plot twists keep things interesting. This is a rare example of a series where the characters aren't paper thin - they continue to evolve as the series progresses. This is one of the best anime series out there, as one of the best mecha series.
SERIES OPINIONS:
To put it simply, this is an excellent series. Many fans of the Gundam series call this the best sub-series of all, and honestly, who can blame them? The storyline is great, the animation is great, the characters are great - everything about this series is great. It's good to see the series get a long overdue DVD release in America.
DVD:
These DVDs are good, because they contain several uncut episodes, but they're bad in that they don't contain any special features (that is, other than the very basic DVD stuff.) The series is one of the greatest anime series out there, but don't expect any bonus material.
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent anime series, and I recommend it to any anime or mecha fan. If you like either one, this series will not disappoint.
The Gundams Defeated!.......2003-03-21
Heero vs. Zechs: The Sorrowful Battle.......2002-05-27
More great anime!.......2001-06-29
The only problem that I have w/ GW is the lack of serious character development, the pilots and the others are brought only so far. This leaves the viewer having to come up w/ their own conclusions for one too many a thing. If it weren't for that one thing I'd give GW 5 instead of 4 stars.
As for Operation 4, this is pretty crucial to understanding the series, a lot of questions are ansewerd in this volume, and it sets the stage for the next leg of the series. If you don't watch this volume you're going to be lost for a while in the next leg of GW, plus you'll have some unansewred questions.
