Tenchi Universe - Volume 4 - Time and Space Adventures

In these linked episodes, supergenius Washu invents the Dimensional Cause and Effect Controller, a machine that produces a world corresponding to the user's desires. When she explains it to the other women from outer space, a five-way battle for the controls erupts. The machine overloads, sending the cast to a succession of alternate worlds that represent each woman's fantasy, but where their quarrels continue. Ayeka's servants, Azake and Kamidake, introduce the segments from a modified Kabuki stage. Ayeka imagines herself as a Japanese princess; Tenchi is a samurai; and Ryoko, a demon. Kinoye becomes a pulp-fiction Woman with a Past in a remote village, where Tenchi runs a noodle stand and Ayeka and Sasami are tavern keepers. As high school students, school president Ayeka and juvenile delinquent Ryoko (in matching plaid skirts) fight over Tenchi until Sasami intervenes as Pretty Sammy the Magic Girl. Tenchi becomes a salaryman and Ayeka a fussy sister-in-law in Mihoshi's fantasy of domesticity. Tenchi, incongruously clad in a fedora and bow tie, finds himself an unwilling Clyde to Ryoko's Bonnie in a spoof of crime movies. Seeing the characters in these parts is like watching familiar actors in a comedy sketch on a variety show, and very funny. Rated 13 and up for cartoon violence, drinking, and nudity. --Charles Solomon

The world is about to be split..........2004-06-19
Cool series.......2004-04-01
BASIC PLOT:
It's hard to describe this series because there are so many twists and turns in the plot, but I'll try my best. The story follows a young man named Tenchi Masaki, who has just returned to school from a long break. Soon enough, he meets up with a rather strange cast of characters, and discovers that he may be the last hope for saving the universe! To make things even more difficult for him, many of these strange characters he has met fall in love with him, and this creates some competition amongst them that results in some rather comical scenes.
SERIES OPINIONS:
Why is this series so underrated in America? This is one of the best animes out there. It combines the samurai-style action of Dragon Ball Z with the romance/slapstick humor stylings of Sailor Moon, and this creates a series that is universally appealing. And believe me, over time this series will grow on you.
THE DUB:
Surprisingly, the dub version of this series isn't that bad. A few scenes have been mistranslated or toned down for American audiences, but it's nothing major like with other animes. Here's a little tip, if you're curious about what has been changed - while you're watching the Japanese subtitled version of the DVD, hit the Audio button on your DVD remote and switch to the dub track. This way you can watch the English dub with the English subtitles for the Japanese version - there's no better way to see how different some of the translations are!
DVD:
Once again, DVDs featuring an uncut dub and an uncut sub have been released. This is great because you get both versions of the series. There are also some bonus features as well. There aren't a whole lot of bonuses, but at least there are some - a number of anime DVDs don't have any at all!
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent DVD set, and it's good to have all the episodes of this classic series on DVD at long last. Still, the DVDs could have been done a little better. If you're an anime fan, this is a strongly recommended release.
No Need for Pretty Sammy.......2002-04-26
most imaginative volume in entire series........2002-03-09
The base story
Washu's most recent ingenious invention is hijacked by the dreams of Ryoko, Aeka, Mihoshi, Kione and Sasami. Washu's device is one that creates alternative realities based upon the wishes of the user. So, the girls' deepest desires (ummm, basicly involving Tenchi) become manifest...
Poor Tenchi. Now the girls are chasing him across alternate dimensions of spacetime! Each alternative reality is a stand-alone mini story in its own right. Nice segway between the "on earth" and "in space" Tenchi Universe episodes.
My favorite is Sasami's reality, where she becomes Pretty Sammy. (This is the 2nd instance of the Pretty Sammy character. She first appeared in the Mihoshi Special and later got her own OVA and TV series.) In this story, she comes up with a most interesting strategy to win Tenchi's affections while addressing the emotional needs of Ryoko and Aeka! Absolutely hilarious! Perhaps the funniest moment in the entire series.
Must buy for dedicated Sasami/Pretty Sammy fans.
Tenchi Universe Sampler.......2001-09-04
Anyway, after that unusually long introduction, here is the main idea of "Time and Space Adventures"...
Washu has invented her latest amazing technological wonder, a machine which can alter time and space to anyone's idea of a 'perfect' world. Leave it to Ryoko and Ayeka to sneak in at night to try and use the machine for their own 'perfect' worlds with Tenchi. After all the noise that ensues, and all the girls are fighting over the machine (much to Washu's horror), the button gets pushed, and space-time is changed around. Each girl is cast off into their own 'perfect' world except Washu, who manages to stay in 'reality' and has her work cut out to eliminate the fantasy worlds one by one and get everything back to normal. Everything goes smoothly until one girl has second thoughts about giving up her fantasy... you can guess who. -_^
In all, a fun way to spend 3 episodes, and a bit of a side excursion if you are watching the entire series in sequence.
