Description
Kenshin Himura, sworn to defeat the evil Shishio, has only one obstacle left between him and the mad lord himself. This obstacle is Sojiro, the boy assassin. Kinshin has already beaten many opponents on the road to Shishio, but Sojiro is special. He is faster than Kenshin, stronger than Kenshin, more skilled than Kenshin, and his temperament makes him immune to the special techniques of Kenshin's Hiten Mitsurugi Style! He is called the Tenken because his swordsmanship can only be a gift from the heavens.

Rurouni Kenshin: Innocence and Experience.......2005-09-25
The Rurouni Kenshin series has had many good episodes. It pains me to say, however, that this is one of the last discs with the quality we have come to enjoy and the story telling of Nobuhiro Watsuki (the last disc based on the manga is the next one). This disc happens to have some of my favorite episodes; the Sojiro battle is, in my opinion, the second best in the series.
Episode 53: The conclusion to the "Destruction Army". Not a bad episode but it still was a bit over dramatic and the fight scene wasn't all that great.
Episode 54: Here begins one of the highlights of the Kyoto Arc. From what we know of Sojiro, he is a talented assassin and shows no emotion other than happiness. His Tenken defeated Kenshin once... but it's not enough this time. Here is revealed Sojiro's other talent, the one which allowed him to kill Okubo from inside a moving carrige: Shukuchi. With this footwork, Sojiro's movement is faster than Kenshin and of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. The artwork changes abruptly at the start of the episode but it becomes more consistent as it continues.
Episode 55: At last we learn how Sojiro has come to be. You cannot help but feel sorry for him after learning his past. I do not wish to spoil anything in this episode, I won't say anything else.
Episode 56: The conclusion to the battle. It is very well done; the camera angles and arwork are great. The finale is only the first half, however. In the remainder, Sojiro takes his leave and we finally get closer to Kenshin and Shisio's fight.
Episode 57: This is the low point of the disc. It is filled with flashbacks and feels very repetitive. Though it does start the final duel, it leaves a lot to be desired. It would have been better if the explanation of how everything has led up to where it is now was shorter.
Overall, this is worth purchase. It contains one of best battles in this season and gives us the beginning of the end of the Kyoto Arc. The Japanese voice acting is very well done, I cannot bear to listen to the English. The extras aren't much though. Rurouni Kenshin has been a popular series for a while now, watch this and find out why.
Innocense and Experience.......2004-11-20
"If your weak you die, If your strong you live". You will find in this kenshin dvd that you hear this alot. This is a lie that Lord Shishio had once told Soujiro. This lie as you find out corrupts this kids whole innocence and life.As Kenshin battled Soujiro for the first time he had never expected this little kid to be as strong and experienced as he. As he battles Soujiro for the second time he is prepared but, So is Soujiro for he holds a couple of new moves for the Battousai. As the Battousai battles Soujiro he feels discovers his past and trys to convince him that Shishio had told him this lie. But the kid with no emotions will not accept it. I found this story line and fight scene to be much better than the one with shishio, there is one that may be better or probably around the same when kenshin battles Saito. But this was just perfect everything about it was perfect. The fighting affects the story line and the emotions are just so perfect. I would have to suggest you buy this no matter what the cost its a piece of work better than any other episode.
Touching and testing.......2004-05-27
What can I say about this DVD that hasn't been said already twenty different times? My one major objection is that this is in no way a better battle than that found in Shadow of the Wolf. If you want to know why, read my review about it.
Kenshin's battle with Soujiro: You won't want to miss it!.......2004-01-04
"Rurouni Kenshin, Legend of Kyoto" is coming to a head as Kenshin finally faces Sjorio again, and then begins the final battle with Shishio himself in Volume 13 of the epic Japanese anime:
Episode 53, "The Giant Versus Superman: Like an Arrow Shot at a Time of Despair": Kenshin's mentor, Hiko Seijuurou, takes on Fuji, the towering giant who popped up at the end of the previous episode in the final bit of business to be disposed of in this lengthy story line before Kenshin crosses swords with his main opponents.
Episode 54, "Hiten Versus Shukuchi: Sojiro's Inborn Talent": The long-awaited rematch between Kenshin and Sojiro begins, but the mysterious smile and merciless blade of his opponent continues to baffle our hero. Sojiro continues to play with Kenshin, which has got to be a big mistake.
Episode 55, "The Tragedy of a Stormy Night: Sojiro's Past": The darkness hidden inside Sojiro's heart and the logic of the survival of the fittest are revealed as we finally learn what is behind that cold smile.
Episode 56, "A Duel With an Extreme Moment: Shuntensatsu Versus Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki": Kenshin has a scar on his cheeck, but Sojiro has one on his heart, and it turns out the source of Sojiro's strength is also its fatal flaw.
Episode 57, "Two Men at the End of an Era: Shishio Versus Kenshin, Final Battle": Sojiro leaves his master one final gift before disappearing, as the two legendary swordsmen of the Revolution finally collide and all else fades away. Kenshin has been a minor diversion in Shishio's quest to take over Japan, but now he has proven enough of a threat for the criminal mastermind to risk his life in battle with our hero. Of course, this is just the start of the final battle, to be continued in the next episode on the next DVD: you won't want to mess it!
The extras include another set of vocabulary terms in the liner notes (e.g., Bujin, Tenken, Wakizashi, etc.), and there is also the usual collection of outtakes. However, I have to admit a preference for when one of the actors slips in a joke as opposed to just tripping over their tongue.
There is an excellent set of pacing to Kenshin's battle with Soujiro, although keeping straight off the techniques in terms of their names and moves is becoming a bit much, so I tend not to worry about it. I am usually offended by the appearance of an Achilles heel at the last moment since I would rather see the hero win then the villain lose. But this variation on that particular theme plays out quite well. Plus there is just something about the translated lyrics to those songs at the beginning and end of each episode. Yes, they have nothing to do with the series, but that is part of their charm.
Pure Art!.......2003-10-21
This series with Soujiro is Pure Art work! This series deserves an oscar. I love fight seens in anime but fight seens is not what made this series. The writing, music and camera work combined to make this series with Soujiro forever memorable.
The Whole Rurouni Kenshin series is exceptional for an anime series but this one takes special honor. Soujiro's abuse as a child makes you sad for him but it also clearly explains why he is like he is, and this explanation makes all the difference.
"If You're Strong You Live" "If You're Weak You Die". The lie that Shishio told him which put him on a path of cold hearted murder. Innocense corrupted; by his step father and his family and by Shishio. The direction of this plight, of the inner struggle is just ART!
I just loved the direction. It was the best in the series. That is a difficult statement to make given the high quality of the entire Rurouni Kenshi series because all of the episodes are exceptional. But the Soujiro series is just better. It is sooo well done!
