Tensions between reality and the cyber-realm of the "the World" intensify as Wave Master Tsukasa remains trapped within the game, unlike the other characters who log on and off when they choose. Bear believes that Tsukasa is actually a girl in a coma whose consciousness has become divorced from her physical existence, but Tsukasa dismisses this notion. As they search for the mysterious Key of the Twilight, the characters converge on an upside-down dungeon that echoes Befuddle Hall in Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland. Crim remembers how to reach it from earlier versions of the game; Tsukasa simply teleports there. Confronted by an aged man who "failed as a father," Tsukasa announces, "I may have found it"--only to be struck down by the Puss-in-Boots figure who has guided him. Every revelation introduces new mysteries as this intriguing adventure continues. (Rated 13 and older: violence) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Still going strong.......2004-04-05

The series continues to develop without losing the interest of the viewer, which is amazing, considering the lack of action, which I am fine with, but others may not be. I can't get enough of this series.

5 out of 5 stars .Hack//sign. Vol. 3.......2003-12-20

This is a really great series!! Great music and beautiful animation! I like the plot too. I am an anime fan, and i recommend this to any anime fan. The only problem I have with it, as the same with any anime dvd, is the price. Very expensive!! Especially for a 13 year old like me..I'm so poor!! T.T I assure you though, it is worth the price. Just buy it and watch it! I assure you, you will love it!!! ^_^ :P

2 out of 5 stars Argh..........2003-12-20

First off, let me just say that I've only watched .Hack//Sign up to the end of Gestalt. Also, this is more of a review on the series up to this point, rather that Gestalt alone. You can form your own opinion from that.

Now, at first I loved .Hack//Sign. I was captivated by the entire concept of character relationships inside an online game. But soon, the effect wore off. The episodes became so bland and monotonous, even major events in the series (like the last episode in Gestalt) failed to rekindle my interest in Tsukasa's plight. Most of the scenes just feel like filler... as if .Hack//Sign, up to this point in the series at least, could have been done with half the episodes.

As for the soundtrack, it's mediocre. A few good instrumental songs, but nothing to scream about.

But if you like the .Hack video games, I'm sure you will enjoy this series more than I. It just seems to me that there are better animes out there that focus on character development... even if they do lack .Hack//Sign's original concept.

If you've sincerely enjoyed .Hack//Sign up to Gestalt, then you will most likely enjoy this DVD. If you're having doubts about where this series is going, than you may want to save your money.

4 out of 5 stars Good DVD - Below average CD.......2003-10-28

I love the DVD and the series.
This is just a note to those who might be getting the DVD with the CD as I did.
Disk 3 and 4 have what can only be described as moderate music disks. I like most all the songs on the first two disks but the third and fourth music disks have almost nothing new or nothing worth making mention of. Decent enough for background noise but not for active listening. Maybe one or two real good songs on each of these CD's.
It's simply my opinion that if you know someone else who is collecting the series with the music dics to borrow them before you pay for them.

5 out of 5 stars .hack//sign - Gestalt.......2003-10-28

This is so far the best of the .hack//sign series I have seen to date. This volume contains a lot of action as Tsukasa, Bear, and Mimiru search for the Key of the Twilight. When I first watched it I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

If you are looking for a really fast paced series then I would not recommend this one, but if you are looking for a story with an intricate plot, developed characters, and a theme that asks some very key questions about the worlds (both online and off) then I would recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars Short But Sweet .......2007-01-20

This was an impulse buy for me because I really like the cover art, so I wasn't to sure about what I was getting. I am truly dissapointed because Gestalt has an interesting story with only 2 episodes on the dvd. The animation is very smooth and vibrant and the dubbing doesn't suck so its a real let down when you get to the end of the dvd and it ends just before the story really begins. I really enjoyed it so I wouldn't say don't buy it but you might not want to waste your money on it.

4 out of 5 stars Great but incomplete.......2005-12-19

I loved it, but it left too many questions unanswered. Unfortunately, I don't think the series was ever completed. With the release of so much anime today, I hope that they will complete this one.

4 out of 5 stars Yay, another OAV without prerequesite manga!.......2004-01-08

I love the way the American translation companies think they can translate OAV series that don't cover a whole series without confusing and annoying many people.

I, like many others, bought this anime because the box art was pretty. And while I admit that I was disappointed with the short length, I still enjoyed it. Its not so much that the plot is incomplete, as its just not fully introduced. What is covered by these two episodes is essentially the first two chapters in a seven volume series.

After watching Gestalt, I did a little research on it. Sifting through massive amounts of Gestalt therapy pages (o_O talk about a pain in my bum), I was rewarded with information on the lovely manga that spawned this annoyingly short OAV. I found out it was based on a manga by the wonderful Kouga Yun, who, for some reason, has this problem which her long running series getting crammed into short OAV series (go watch Earthian and you'll know what I mean). I also discovered that there was no prayer (at least at that time- its not impossible now) of getting a translation of the manga over here- Gestalt, like Earthian, is a shonen-ai series.

Now, I'm not going to say why it is, because that would be a huge major spoiler. But it annoyed me none the less. But what with Gravitation and FAKE being released over here, its actually not completely unlikely that we'll be seeing something of Kouga Yun's translated soon, Earthian at the very least.

Eh, anyways, I don't think there's anything in here that would really offend anyone- the plot hasn't gone into shonen-ai territory yet, and I didn't notice anything else about it to be particularly "iffy".

4 out of 5 stars Good but incomplete.......2003-02-27

Gestalt is a beautifully done show that is entertaining, action-filled, and humorous. Unfortunately, it has not been finished. We are left with several questions and the sense that there is more to the story.

On the bright side, the character designs are awesome and the story is fairly original. I like how Ohri, being a mute at the beginning, has to speak with those boxes that RPG game characters use. Cute!

If you have ever seen (or heard of) the video game series/OAV series "Angelique", then you will find that some of the characters (just Olivier, really) look like a cross between several "Angie" characters. My best friend pointed that out and I have never been able to watch it Gestalt without thinking that.

So, please watch this, but understand that it is NOT the whole series.

1 out of 5 stars uhg.......2003-02-23

Gestalt? Ok. I was first attracted to this anime by seeing an add for it on another Animeworks DVD. The artwork is absolutely beautiful! The colors are bright and its very easy to understand what's going on. (Unlike X the movie where everything is far to dark to see anything.)
Ok, ok so the animation was great... but that still doesn't make up for the plot. (Huge sigh) I have to say I was incredibly disappointed in Gestalt, and regret ever buying it. I would return it if I had kept the receipt. In my opinion, I hated it, I own it and have only watched it once (any more then that and I would probably die) but this is just my opinion.
Also, I wasent quite fond of any of the characters, (I didn't even bother to remember any of there names) but after all there cant be much character development in such a short anime. (This is short mind you)

Sorry if I haven't helped you at all in your decision. Many people have found this to be a great series and wish for it to be longer. Personally I wouldn't care if there was more or not. I just didn't find it intrusting at all.

Beautiful animation, but that's all it Gestalt really has to offer.
