This rollicking comedy-adventure concludes as the characters finally reach the mysterious world known as the Galactic Leyline. After searching for clues about it in the cyclopean ruins of "Grave of the Dragons," Gene Starwind poses as a prisoner to free the man who knows its coordinates. The expedition to the enigmatic planet turns into a four-way race that pits Gene and his crew against Hazanko and the Kei Pirates, the MacDougal Brothers and Professor Gwen Kahn, and a Ctarl-Ctarl battle cruiser. At the Leyline, Gene, Melfina, and Suzuka confront the pasts that shaped their identities. Suzuka duels with the Pirate who murdered her family--and copied her face (a new twist on identity theft). Gene remembers his life as an orphan after his father sacrificed his life to save his son during a pirate attack. Melfina, who wants to know her true origins, receives a surprising answer. Katsuhiko Chiba's screenplay sometimes staggers, like Gene the morning after a heavy night. Episode 23 is a long digression set in a hot spring with lots of slapstick comedy and jiggle shots, but very little story development. However, the filmmakers do a noteworthy job of preserving the tone of the series and the personalities of the characters while raising the stakes. Gene demonstrates his untapped potential when he engineers an interplanetary jailbreak and battles the maniacal Hazanko, but he remains a devil-may-care rogue: he doesn't turn into a smarmy Good Guy. All the major characters survive the climactic fights, including the evil MacDougal Brothers, which leaves open the possibility of sequels. Gene, Melfina, and Jim Hawking may have returned to the backwater planet Sentinel III--and to a staggering debt to equipment dealer Fred Lou--but they're not likely to stay there. Rated 13 and up: nudity, profanity, sexual humor, and violence. --Charles Solomon

Like the dashing desperado in an old Hollywood Western, rhinestone-in-the-rough Gene Starwind is a self-proclaimed outlaw who lives by a personal code of ethics. His sphere of action is limited to the two-bit planet where he lives with his friend and business partner Jim Hawking, until rebel pirate "Hot Ice" Hilda arrives. She gives Jim and Gene the super-ship, the Outlaw Star, and tells them about a fabulous treasure hidden at the Galactic Leyline. The duo sets off, accompanied by beautiful assassin Suzuka, Malfina, an android who bonds with the ship's fussy computer, and, later, the abrasive alien Aisha Clanclan of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire. They face some nasty enemies: the Kei Pirates, the MacDougall brothers (Harry, a psychotic cyborg, and Ron, a sadistic human), and Lord Hazanko of the 108 Stars pirate gang. The expedition to the enigmatic planet Galactic Leyline becomes a four-way race that pits Gene and his crew against Hazanko, the MacDougals, and a Ctarl-Ctarl battle cruiser. At the Leyline, Gene, Malfina, and Suzuka confront the pasts that shaped their identities. Katsuhiko Chiba's screenplay sometimes staggers, like Gene the morning after a heavy night. But the characters remain true to their natures: they don't turn into smarmy good guys, and Outlaw Star delivers an engaging, if rather dark brand of comedy-adventure. The cleanup artists on the series do very sloppy work: Gene's features change noticeably from scene to scene. Rated 13 Up: Nudity, profanity, sexual humor, and violence. --Charles Solomon

Old school Toonami memories.......2007-05-29
Its been about four maybe five years since Ive seen Outlaw Star, back when Cartoon Network used to have a decent lineup of Animes on their Toonami Block. Seeing the series again, (uncut) is awesome. You never would imagine how much it was edited for tv until you see this version.
This boxed set itself couldnt be simpler, three dvd cases and two discs in each case. Nice compact box too.
If your a fan of good space action and characters that grow on you, you should check this out.
Are you going into space someday?.......2007-05-23
There's plenty of sci-fi anime series out there, but "Outlaw Star" is something a bit special, just like the ship in the title. Instead of comedy or pure futuristic adventure, this series strikes a balance of futuristic grittiness and some outright comedy, with some deliciously unexpected twists and a satisfying finale.
For money, Outlaw Gene Starwind and his preteen pal Jim will do almost anything -- bounty-hunting, bodyguarding, and other odd jobs. But when they agree to guard a strange woman (whose name turns out to be "Hot Ice" Hilda) and her mystery briefcase, they didn't expect to be hunted by pirates -- or that the briefcase contains a cyborg girl, Melfina.
For their own safety, Hilda sweeps Jim and Gene off to the system where she's hiding another ship -- the advanced Outlaw Star, which requires Melfina to fly. And when Hilda is killed, Gene suddenly finds himself the owner of a mysterious, ultra-advanced, ultra-powerful grappler ship. Except everyone else wants it too, and to keep it, Jim will have to deal with more than just pirates and Tao masters.
As the story proceeds, Gene will have to deal with a beautiful, lethal assassin who reluctantly joins up, killer robots the beastlike Ctarl-Ctarl, the terrifying Anten Seven, a prison planet, giant carnivore shrimps, and a familiar ship that might carry his father's murderers. They travel from planet to planet and even get into a space race, before setting off to find the Galactic Leyline.
Imagine "Outlaw Star" as a sort of "Cowboy Bebop," but not nearly as sad, and with more emphasis on comedy, money, and fast-paced space battles. Ithas a sort of spaghetti western atmosphere, since our heroes live on a rough-hewn frontier where it's every man for himself, and you're constantly threatened by pirates.
In some ways, this is unusually realistic sci-fi, where the heroes have bills to pay, and don't automatically know how to pilot a ship. The first few episodes are pretty straightforward space opera, but it loosens up once the initial storyline is over -- then we get some one-off storylines, an underlying arc full of mysteries about the Leyline.
The animation is detailed, solid and refined, with lots of intricate scenes involving boxing spacecraft and bustling cities, as well as sword fights, killer robots, and gun battles with magic bullets. The only problem is some of the action scenes with Suzuka, where she looks kind of half-drawn. But the scripts are tightly written, with some nicely snappy dialogue ("So you're... DEAF Rob?" "That's 'DEATH'!").
Gene makes a nice battle-scarred hero, who likes women, wine and having his own ship, although he hates space travel. And the naive, confused Melfina, deadly Suzuka, and smart preteen Jim make a nice backing cast. The supporting cast is mostly colourful and well-rounded, from space frogs to grizzled old outlaws to Fred Luo, a gay weapons heir who is just a bit too fond of Gene. Aisha Clanclan is too bombastic and crazy for the rest of the cast, though.
The series "Outlaw Star" is a solid, entertaining sci-fi anime, with plenty of action, comedy and a well-rounded futuristic setting. Definitely worth checking out.
My favorite series.......2007-05-19
Honestly, for me this had a lot of things i like. Outlaw Star is a Sci Fi anime series with space fights on grappler ships, gun fights everywhere else, and a crazy crew that kicks butt their own way. I can't describe too much but i had fun with this series ever since it came on the Cartoon Network. It might be described as Cowboy Bebob in its time, but without the awesome soundtrack.
For Grown Ups or Kids?.......2007-05-14
I originally watched Outlaw Star when it was on Cartoon Network, and thought it was one of the best anime's I had ever seen.
How disapointed I was when I ordered and actually started to watch it.
Outlaw Star is another tragic example of people trying to mix a very simple and almost childish atmosphere with mature themes and language. Which in short means that the storyline and the dialog my attract the attention of younger people who shouldn't be exposed to the language and the nudity that is in the cartoon, while more mature audiences may feel almost embaressed to be watching something so simple.
Baisically, it's like watching a Saturday morning cartoon with foul language and sex. It's a very poor mix.
Except for their dialog, the characters are great. the storyline, although sometimes predictable and simple eventually picks up, and by the end, you truly want to know what the Galactic Layline is, if you can get that far in the series.
Outlaw Star Rules!.......2007-05-13
Next to Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star is the best anime show around. Outlaw Star tells the story of 2 friends/business partners Gene Starwind and Jim Hawking
who want to live the outlaw's life of danger. They get this and more when an outlaw shows up one day at their door. The next thing they know they are being chased by pirates who want a ship called the XGP. They soon find out that their traveling companion stole the ship and the pirates are after her.
Hilda sacrifices herself so that Gene, Jim, and the bioandroid named Melfina can escape the pirates and keep the XGP out of reach of the pirates. In addition to Melfina, Gene and Jim pick up two others that make up the crew of the newly named Outlaw Star. Our wandering crew of outlaws go around the galaxy in search of money and the secret of the galactic leyline; all the while trying to evade the pirates who want their ship.
Action, adventure, and danger make Outlaw Star a great buy for anime lovers.

Please don't confuse this with Cowboy Bebop..........2007-06-25
Since this series gets compared to Cowboy Bebop for some strange reason, just thought I'd make that the point of my review. If you haven't seen it, Cowboy Bebop is a classy tribute to all things great about american film noir and seventies cop-shows, blues music and jazz... as anime goes, it's high art and has one of the most memorable background scores by Yoko Kanno you'll ever hear and excellent english voice acting.
(yeah, I'm a fan)
Outlaw Star on the other hand, is a juvenile, lower-budget, noisy space opera, and that's not to say it's not fun to watch, but... it is what it is. To it's credit, it's got some nice character designs and the script is full of good humor (the ronin Suzuka gets the best lines), it's not graphically violent, though it does have a bit of swearing in it. The dub needs help; the english voice acting is pretty thin and uninspired and it brings the whole thing down- I enjoyed it alot more listening to the japanese and reading the subtitles.
It's not the best or worst anime out there, it's got a good heart. Just please avoid the 'if you liked Cowboy Bebop' tag - they're pullin yr leg.
Wondeful Tale of Astronomical Proportions!.......2007-06-06
"Outlaw Star" takes place in the future. Humans have left the Earth and have colonized many areas in space, but the universe is still largely a mystery. This story follows a bounty hunter who loves the ladies and is always in debt, a pre-teen who has the intellect of a genius, an android who can't remember her past, but is vital to the group's future, a woman not unlike a samurai warrior who favors ancient techniques to new-fangled weaponry, an alien who is like a werewolf changes but into a tiger-like creature instead of a wolf-like creature, and the ship, call the OUTLAW STAR who has a mind of his own. Together this band of misfits travel through space, try to escape debt, destroy their enemies, and discover the secrets of the android's past. This a terrific series for those who like stories of space travel and those who love Anime! Enjoy!
NOTE: Is recommended for ADULTS! Has adult-oriented situations.

Anthony Mann made some of the greatest Westerns of the 1950s, all in partnership with James Stewart. Perhaps needing to prove himself as his own man, in 1957 Mann dropped out of Night Passage to do this film. It's a rather schematic character study about a lawman-turned-bounty-hunter (Henry Fonda) who undertakes the professional shaping-up of an effete young sheriff (Anthony Perkins) too tentative to police the streets of his town. Those streets are compositionally present right outside the oversize window of the office where Perkins undergoes a lot of his soul-searching and arguments with Fonda. That's typical of the film--scrupulously designed, yet abstract to the point of dramatic aridity. The VistaVision black-and-white of cameraman Loyal Griggs (Oscar®-winner for Shane) is at once stark and glossy. Fonda's own reclamation as a social being is accomplished by way of a not-very-interesting subplot involving Betsy Palmer and a half-breed child played by Michel Ray. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
Henry Fonda in THE TIN STAR.......2007-05-13
It has so long since I saw this great western. Lost to TV for many years I was delighted to see it re mastered and put out on DVD. It did not disappoint. Great story . Great acting and the quality is first rate. A must for collectors of classic westerns.
Review of "The Tin Star".......2007-05-12
This is another great Anthony Mann directed western minus Jimmy Stewart. Henry Fonda does an outstanding job playing the wise and experienced former lawman turned bounty hunter. He passes his wisdom onto the green but very maleable "rookie" Sheriff played by Anthony Perkins (Good job by him too!). I loved the story and the action scenes. Highly Recommended! Pass the popcorn!
"I noticed you're wearing your guns too low.".......2007-03-26
Anthony Mann trademarked film with Henry Fonda as a former lawman turned bounty hunter trying to escape his past, and Anthony Perkins as a brash, overly talkative deputy-turned-Sheriff with a problematic local bully, played by a loudmouth cowardly backshooting Neville Brand, who is at the core of most of the problems in this small western town.
The formula is alive and well here with Fonda mentoring to the young Sheriff and finding a beautiful and sympathetic widow, Betsy Palmer, to take him in. The drama builds predictably but satisfactorily to the anticipated and inevitable showdown which is not to be missed. High watchability factor, its a classic.
The black and white DVD is a very good restoration and 5.1 remixing that is much better than I expected. Sadly there are no other extras or liner notes. 5 Badges
Another Great Anthony Mann Western.......2007-03-21
Anthony Mann was known for the great hardbitten Westerns he made with frequent collaborator James Stewart, such as The Naked Spur, Winchester '73, The Man From Laramie, and others. But he did make one Western with Stewart's best friend and another Western movie stalwart, the great Henry Fonda.
Fonda comes into a small town with an outlaw dead over a saddle. He's a bounty hunter, formerly a lawman who has become cynical with life and justice, and prefers the pay and independence of bounty hunting to being a town marshal. The town has a young and very inexperienced sheriff, played by Anthony Perkins, who is struggling to hold the town together as a bigoted bully played by Neville Brand tries to force his way into the sheriff's office. Fonda takes a liking to Perkins, and tries to show him the tricks of the trade. When two half-breed brothers kill the town doctor, events spiral out of control.
The Tin Star is full of wonderful performances, from Fonda who sees in the idealistic Perkins the younger man he used to be and learns to love again thanks to Betsy Palmer, who plays a widow who has a half-breed son; to Perkins, who hits the right notes as someone who'll make a fine lawman if his dumb mistakes don't kill him first, and Brand as a menacing, hateful brute who runs over as many people as he can. John McIntire (another frequent Mann collaborator) is also great as the town doctor.
This is an all-time classic. Don't miss it.
As classic as you can get!.......2006-11-09
The contribution made by Henry Fonda to classic Westerns is incredible : he made his point early with "The Oxbow Incident," his potent presence in "Drums Along the Mohawk"... He was excellent as Wyatt Earp in "My Darling Clementine," even better as the stubborn, mistaken lieutenant-colonel in "Fort Apache " a legendary gunman in "Warlock" and the hardened gunfighter-tutor in Anthony Mann's "The Tin Star."
Fonda plays a solitary-bounty hunter ("I'm not the law. I work inside it for money!") who had once been a sheriff, and who had given up the badge in disgust of the shameful way he had been treated by the citizens in a decisive tragic moment of his life--for which he lost his wife and son...
Fonda is quiet, sure, polite, sincere and appealing... Teaching Michael Ray, it was clear that he knew not only his guns but human nature... He is human, kind, anxious, worry and tender with the young boy...
Anthony Perkins is attractive in his doubts about taking action or decision... He is naïve and innocent, also incompetent for the job of an officer responsible for law and order... He always looks to Fonda for leadership, but he is eager to be a firm sheriff...
The conversation between Fonda and Perkins are the heart of the movie, which deals more with character than Gunplay: "You got to keep cool and have absolute confidence. You lack confidence." "A decent man does not want to kill. But if you're gonna shoot, you shoot to kill." "Study men. A gun is only a tool. You can master a gun if you got the knack. Harder to learn man."
The film had racism: When Bogardus kills the Indian, in the back, outside the saloon, he says: "No sheriff will disarm a white man for shooting a mingy Indian. You, an Injun lover?"
Betsy Palmer plays Nona Mayfield, a woman compelled to live outside the town because she married an Indian: "I'm just so used to everybody hating Indians."
The film had also intuition and humor:
- Kip Mayfield to Fonda: "Don't I look like a sheriff?" And Fonda replying: "You look more like a sheriff than the sheriff does."
Abbe Pickett, after being a father for eleven girls and now to a boy, asks: "You sure it ain't another girl?" and the doc replies: "Well, I hope I'm not too old to know the difference."
John McIntire is fine as the old doc whose big dream was: "I wish you two to get together."
Neville Brand enjoys oppressing, intimidating and persecuting...
Anthony Mann's "The Tin Star" is strong on location work, tense, realistic, technically competent... The film had dusty action, and a picturesque old town with its bank, hotel, saloon, jail, hanging tree and all the cowardly citizens turned out to watch...
With elements of "Shane," and "High Noon," the film is a very good Western, 'as classic as you can get.'

The one to buy.......2006-09-12
I couldn't disagree more with that other review. First saw this on TV in the UK and my video of it is worn out so I'm pleased to see it on DVD. There is loads of Kris on this film talking about his music (who cares about the films?) and some nice contributions from Johnny Cash, John Prine, Jackson Browne, and the hilarious Fred Foster amongst others. Kris takes us to old haunts in Nashville and sings songs solo on his guitar from his home. Lots of his views also on politics, booze, Janis Joplin, and yes, the movies too. This is a far better buy than the disappointing Breakthrough DVD which for some reason gets 5 stars! This is much more informative and the one to buy.

I thought finally a biography on Kris Kristofferson. It seems that by watching this dvd, you get more questions than answers. The beginning is okay, they talk about the early days but the documentary lacks early day viewing material. Would of been nice to see Kris perform in the late 60's early 70's. Then they talk about a few of his bigger movies like A star is born and Heaven's gate but no mention of his other great movies like Convoy, Welcome home and Songwriter. There's barely any mention of what he was up to during the late 70's and 80's.
I just think that more effort could of been put into this project and treat the fans to something decent. We only get some of the story. Hopefully something better will come along someday.

Poor sound.......2007-06-02
The original title of this Canadian film when released in the USA was "The Ballad of Harry Tracy." I bought this DVD for the movie's theme song, sung by Gordon Lightfoot (it was never made available any other way). Unfortunately, not much was done to restore this film prior to its release on DVD, and it shows. The sound quality is dismal. Too bad, because the song was one of the best Gordon Lightfoot ever did despite the fact it wasn't his own.
The story roughly follows the last days (at the turn of the 20th Century) of the famous outlaw Harry Tracy but departs from the truth in many ways as filmakers often do. The real Harry wasn't quite the saint he was made out to be in this film, and there was no love story at all in real life.
Still, it is good fiction as filmed, similar in content to "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," and Bruce Dern makes the best of what was given him. It was also fun to see Lightfoot's debut as an actor in this film -- not such a great actor perhaps but an interesting role just the same. The original film I would have given a higher rating, but as released on DVD, because of the quality problems which are very noticeable, only 3 stars.
Harry Tracy.......2005-08-07
HARRY TRACY (originally titled HARRY TRACY, DESPERADO) is a 1982 film starring Bruce Dern as the title character and folk-singer Gordon Lightfoot as U.S. Marshal Morrie Nathan, the lawman who, the movie tells us, spent years tracking the desperado down before finally catching up with him in the Pacific Northwest.
HARRY TRACY came pretty late to the game of translating real-life Wild West criminals to celluloid heroes. That doesn't stop it from borrowing heavily from its predecessors, though. The movie opens with a long-john clad Harry Tracy scurrying through the deep snowdrifts of the small town of Aspen, Colorado, making his escape while the pursuing posse is seen in extreme long shot, a la McCabe & Mrs. Miller. When he's captured shortly after a photographer takes his picture along with the newly met but destined to be love of his life, Catherine Tuttle (Helen Shaver.) The Catherine Tuttle character is a whole-cloth creation, although she bears a strong resemblance to Butch and Sundance's Etta Place. The intrusive news photographer, along with the insert shots of dime novels glorifying the deeds of Harry Tracy that will briefly appear later on, are there to tell us this is an end-of-the-west western. This story takes place at the turn of the twentieth century (they did get that right) and Harry Tracy is portrayed as an anachronism, a throwback to days of righteous honor among gallant thieves.
Tracy learns Catherine's name and the fact that she lives in Portland (`That's in Oregon,' sister Judy Tuttle helpfully specifies.) Marshal Lightfoot then hauls Tracy to jail, where Lightfoot benignly torments him long enough for the Tuttles to stumble upon him, still in long-johns, roped to post in the back yard. Mama Tuttle is the widow of a federal judge and she blows enough smoke to make the marshal think twice about freezing his prisoner to death. Unfortunately for the law if you don't freeze them they slip away, and Tracy escapes to his old hole in the wall hideout, only to learn that the old gang is gone and the cabin has been taken over by a star struck painter, David Merrill (Michael Gwynne.)
The real Merrill was a common thug who rode with Tracy for a while until Tracy grew tired of him and shot him in the back. This movie twists it around a bit, making Merrill the treacherous one, and making of Harry Tracy a Robin Hood in chaps and slouch hat. Someone who mourns the loss of his merry men and the encroachment of corrupt civilization by observing that `tin horn politicians and government bootlickers are all that's left.' Another coat of whitewash is applied when Tracy and Merrill heist their first railroad. It's a slapstick scene, accompanied by rinky-tinky background music that ends with fluttering banknotes and frustrated pursuers. In Butch & Sundance it endeared us to the charming co-stars. Here it just highlights the crooks' incompetence.
There are some things to like about HARRY TRACY. The British Columbia locations are very well realized, and the turn-of-the-century town and country is minutely detailed. Dern is a good actor, but he's a bit miscast as a romantic lead. Debonair charm isn't his strength, and his acceptance by the country folk as a crusader against the pernicious railroad and bank interests just doesn't wash. This movie is, mercifully, Gordon Lightfoot's first and only appearance in a dramatic role. A tepid recommendation for this one.
Good movie, but disappointing DVD .......2005-03-18
The movie Harry Tracy is one of my favorite Westerns. How unfortunate it is then that the transfer to DVD is so poor!
The picture is blurry and the sound is muffled and somewhat garbled. The quality is so bad that even though I'm a fan of the film, I returned the DVD to the seller.

THIS DVD IS GREAT.......2005-09-15
Based on the cheesy cover, upon receiving this DVD I thought to myself "What have I wasted my money on now!" But as the old saying goes, you can never judge a book (DVD) buy it cover. In this DVD Waymo tells his unbelievable story of country music success. This DVD also has a concert from August 12, 1978. However, not in Dolby or DTS, the audio doesn't sound that bad. Here are the songs, since Amazon doesn't list them. 1. Are you ready for the country 2. Lonesome on'ry and mean 3. Waymore's Blues 4. Amanda 5. A long time ago 6. Jack of diamonds 7. Tonight the bottle let me down 8. This time 9. Just because you asked me to 10. I've always been crazy 11. Don't you think this outlaw bits don't got out of hand 12. Good hearted woman 13. Mammas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys 14. Luckenbach, Texas 15. Honky tonk heroes 16. Are you sure hank done it this way.

Description
Maybe you've never heard of "Peanut Butter on a Bagel." Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jew Boys is a name that everyone's heard of, but are they musicians or wrestlers? Well, maybe a little of both. Richard Samet Friedman (Kinky) is an entertainer, a songwriter, an author, a columnist, an animal lover, a cigar smoker, and one of the most unusual characters Texas ever created. From songs like "They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore" to book titles like "The Love Songs of J. Edgar Hoover," Kinky Friedman holds nothing sacred; all subjects are fair game in writing and performing. This program not only contains a unique and interesting biography of Kinky, but also his most popular songs performed live by "The Kinkster" himself. A frequent overnight guest at the White House, a Don Imus regular, and a traveling gypsy with Willie Nelson, there isn't much this native son of the Lone Star State hasn't seen or done. Now, for the first time, in Kinky's own words and songs, we meet this multi-talented man who has sold over 50 million books and fascinated the world from Austin to Zanzibar. Includes A**hole from El Paso, They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore, Homo Erectus, Sold American, Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed, Marilyn and Joe, Twirl, Old Ben Lucas, Waitret Please Waitret, The Ballad of Charles Whitman, Men's Room L.A.

Better than the biography channel.......2006-03-08
This DVD is a great collection (130 minutes) of biographies and auto biographies. We get to see the lives, loves and friends of Kinky. Unfortunately it is in sound bite form. Yet the sound bites are long enough and well placed to give out a great picture to the pretender to the position of Texas Governor. I was taken back at first when I saw who the interviewees are. Then after a while I could see why they were picked.

Kinky Friedman

From one Cat lover to Another.......2005-07-12
I have read most of Kinky's books, and not that long ago, one of our local tv channels ran this documentary. I enjoyed it so much, that I was wondering when it would come out on DVD, now it has. If you are a Kinky fan, this DVD is a must. It fits right in with his books, and gives the viewer a good look at the real man behind the stories. A man who's heart appears to be just as big as his home state of Texas. His sharp wit seems to be excellently timed and fits into a lot of what is wrong with the country today. I for one hope that he does become the Lone Star State's next Governor in 2006. Don't stop Kinky, a lot of us are counting on you, all of us little guys in Stetson's and Tony Lama boots. Even in Australia, you have a lot of fans.
Why not Kinky?.......2004-04-23
I've never seen this DVD, but I know I can recommend that you buy it anyhow. I'm about to order it, by the way. I've seen Kinky in person, listened to his music, seen him on tv,heard him sing, heard him speak, read his books, read his column in Texas Monthly (it's worth the price of the subscription)- and I always - not only laugh until I think I can't laugh anymore, but I also always leave the Kinkster feeling better inside and feeling better about the world, as well.
Kinky was recently one of the special guests at Jerry Jeff Walker's Birthday Bash in Austin. He helped to make it one of the best times I've ever had.
(...)
Proud to be a Kinky fan from the UK!!.......2003-09-29
Nice DVD - documentary with interviews and live footage on one hand, compilation of live tracks and videos on the other. The documentary was fascinating, giving you the opportunity to "meet" many of the characters of Kinky's books; the extra music clips were varied, touching (Kinky and Willie Nelson playing together) and, in places, very amusing. My one complaint? I'd have rather have seen the complete tape of the early Jewboys concert than some of the later clips, but hey, you can't have everything. Excellent value DVD - recommended for any Kinky fan.

This rollicking adventure takes place in the distant future, when interstellar space is divided among Pirates, the Space Forces, and Outlaws, who live by their personal codes. Self-proclaimed Outlaw Gene Starwind is a crack shot, a ferocious brawler, and a dashing ladies' man. But he suffers from a fear of space rooted in his troubled past. He lives on the two-bit planet Sentinel III with his friend and business partner Jim Hawking, a kid who looks a bit like Duo in Gundam Wing. Jim and Gene are drawn into a web of intrigue by the rebel pirate Hot Ice Hilda. They acquire a supership, the Outlaw Star, and learn of a fabulous treasure hidden at the mysterious Galactic Leyline. They befriend the beautiful assassin Suzuka; Malfina, an android who bonds with the ship's fussy computer; and effete arms dealer Fred Lou. They also pick up some nasty enemies: the Kei Pirates, Aisha Clanclan of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire, and the amoral MacDougall. Some fans have compared Outlaw Star to Cowboy Bebop, but it lacks Bebop's noir atmosphere and gritty fascination. Gene displays a rough-and-tumble charm, but Katsuhiko Chiba's screenplay rambles aimlessly at times, and some of these first nine episodes are little more than filler. Contains these episodes: 1. "Outlaw World," 2. "Star of Desire," 3. "Into Burning Space," 4. "When the Hot Ice Melts," 5. "Beast Girl, Ready to Spring," 6. "Beautiful Assassin," 7. "Creeping Evil," 8. "Forced Departure," 9. "A Journey of Adventure"! Huh? This uncut version is rated 13 Up for nudity, sexual situations, profanity, and violence. An edited version of Outlaw Star started airing on the Cartoon Network in January 2001. --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
Are you going into space someday?.......2007-04-18
There's plenty of sci-fi anime series out there, but "Outlaw Star" is something a bit special, just like the ship in the title. Instead of comedy or pure futuristic adventure, this series strikes a balance of futuristic grittiness and some outright comedy, with some deliciously unexpected twists.
For money, scarred Outlaw Gene Starwind and his preteen pal Jim will do almost anything -- bounty-hunting, bodyguarding, and other odd jobs. But when they agree to guard a strange woman (whose name turns out to be "Hot Ice" Hilda) and her mystery briefcase, they didn't expect to be hunted by pirates -- or that the briefcase contains a cyborg girl, Melfina.
For their own safety, Hilda sweeps Jim and Gene off to the system where she's hiding another ship -- the advanced ship Outlaw Star, which requires Melfina to fly. And when Hilda is killed, Gene suddenly finds himself the owner of a mysterious, ultra-advanced, ultra-powerful grappler ship.
Except everyone else wants it too, and to keep it, Jim will have to deal with more than just pirates and Tao masters -- he'll have to deal with a beautiful, lethal assassin who attacks a weapon-selling pal of Gene's, the beastlike Ctarl-Ctarl, and a familiar ship that might carry his father's murderers. What's more, he and his pals must find out what the mysterious Galactic Leyline.
Imagine "Outlaw Star" as a sort of "Cowboy Bebop," but not nearly as sad, and with more emphasis on comedy, paying the bills, and fast-paced space battles. And it has a sort of spaghetti western atmosphere, since our heroes live on a rough-hewn frontier where it's every man for himself.
And the scripts are tightly written, with some nicely snappy dialogue ("So you're... DEAF Rob?" "That's 'DEATH'!").
Gene makes a nice battle-scarred hero, who likes women, wine and having his own ship, although he hates space travel. And the naive, confused Melfina and smart preteen Jim make a nice backing cast. The supporting cast is mostly colourful and well-rounded, from space frogs to Fred Luo, a gay weapons heir who is just a bit too fond of Gene. Aisha Clanclan is too bombastic and crazy for the rest of the cast, though.
The first volume of "Outlaw Star" introduces the cast, lays the groundwork, and sets up the story arcs for the rest of the series. Don't expect any answers, but do expect a solid sci-fi thrillride.
HUGE MISTAKE.......2007-01-19
When I got this DVD, I got super excited that i had one of my favorite anime. Until i poped in the discs, that is.
It turned out that BOTH the Disc 1 and Disc 2 had episodes 6-9. Not 1-5 on Disc 1, like it should have been. I know this isn't Amazon's fault, but I mean, thats just not cool.
Welcome To The Outlaw World!.......2005-11-02
Five years after I bought the first volume of Outlaw Star, I still have a habit of popping it into my DVD player and watch it over and over. The series Outlaw Star is a sci-fi adventure that doesn't take place on Earth, unlike other anime series. When I first watched this series, I fell in love with it, even when I had no idea what anime was. So this would be a great series to start with if you are interested in knowing what anime is.
The story is superb! The main character, Gene, is a Bounty Hunter on a civil planet. Along with his young companion, Jim, they track down bounties and work in a repair shop. But when a strange woman asks for some protection, Gene and Jim embark on a space adventure with the whole galaxy looking for them!
The DVD contains nine full length episodes. You can choose from either Japanese or English audio and English subtitles. The extras have an image gallery of the characters, ships and props. Also the traditional text less opening and ending are included. Along with some previews and trailers of other anime series you can try.
Sound-wise, it's a little weak. With HI-FI Stereo, you won't get real heavy or balanced volume. So if you're one of those guys who love to blast amazing sound out of their new speakers and are looking for a series with amazing sound, this isn't the one for you.
The graphics are well done and are very superb for something from the year 2000. Though the color quality goes down when you go to your computer. So if you want better quality either pop it in your DVD player or change the properties on your computer.
Overall the series is pretty solid, besides the audio and graphics. But if you're interested in any sci-fi series, buy Outlaw Star. If you enjoy it, get the other two DVD's. I give Outlaw Star (Collection 1) 5 stars out of 5!
My name is Amone. Adios!
Lost In A Sea Of Stars.......2004-06-08
This is a very interesting anime series. It is not one of my favorite. i prefer magical situated story lines when it comes to anime. However, for some one who is really into science fiction will like it.
There's lots of battles, star ships, guns, and a lot more other stuff. I thought the story lines could have been a little bit better.
However, the animation really makes up for it.
------|Outlaw Star|------.......2004-03-25
This may not be one of the best reviews, but you should read it anyway! To start this off, were dealing with a pair of a man and a young boy. Gene Starwind and Jim Hawking pretty cool names if you ask me. They become outlaws as the anime goes on, but not the tpye of outlaws you would see in Cowboy Bebop, their both totally different, remember that. Outlaws in this anime are just people who adventure through space. They catch a crew while they journey all around space with different planets and races. I'm not covering everything in this, because it's obvious others had. I know all about it though, don't get me wrong! If you bothered to read this, Thank you!^^

A comparison of anime finales.......2003-04-13
Of all the anime series I have collected and seen (Cowboy Bebop, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Gundam Wing, etc), this series has the most lighthearted and fun endings of them all. All you anime collectors out there know what im taking about when I say the most great anime endings are sad and dissapointing. The characters die, or are separated. Being tired of all the grief caused by such anime endings, I am glad to find one that leaves the viewer satisfied. I recommend the entire series to every body because of its light heartedness, its superb graphics and fast action. Enjoy!!!
The Best?.......2002-12-17
Well, of course it is...I am 15 and a collector of anime. I have Lots of anime but this is my favorite anime of all time. I think the story is cool and the technology Evan cooler. The caster (a gun that shoots magic shells) is my favorite weapon. It has 9 episodes on 2 dvds and all the episodes are grate but the last 2 are my favorite...the Hot springs planet tenrai episode (I think that's how its spelled) got into the history of the caster and was funny to boot...if you like action adventure and a guy with a cool gun get this!
Outstanding.......2002-03-23
Not often does an anime series come around that not only has beutiful artwrok, wonderfully built characters AND one awesome story. Outlaw star follows in the footsteps of Cowboy BeBop and Gundam Wing. The 3rd collection is by far the best of all. It has it's share of very serious and comedic episodes. The final episode may come as some of a shoker leaving you with many questions (not as shocking as cowboy bebop's ending) and it left me depressed for several days. I highly recomend that any anime fan checks this show out.
Hot Springs Planet Tenrei!.......2002-03-12
The last of the DVDs for Outlaw Star is just as good as the first two. This DVD features "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei" which wasn't shown on CN, something to do with a little thing called nudity. I'm convinced that "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei" was written by someone who was drunk and horny. It's the funniest espiode in the series.
Hot Springs Planet Tenrei marks the last of the funny espiodes and starts with the serious ones. I like Melfina's song in English (yes, I do watch it in English, got a problem with that??)
The ending to Outlaw Star is a trip. I enjoyed the series and hoping they might come out with futher adventures of Gene Starwind, the girl magnet of the universe.
A great ending to a great series.......2002-01-28
This episode marks the end of the great title, the outlaw star, and in a way is the beginning of somethign greater. Besides episode 23, which was unusually high in slapstick, the entire DVD set was action packed, and awesome. If you liked the first two, you won't be disappointed by the conclusion.
