Yoshikazu Yasuhiko directed this 1989 feature based on his own manga. The new frontier of Venus has degenerated into a dystopia ravaged by the civil war between Ishtar and Aphrodia. Bubbly reporter Susan Sommers arrives in the capitol of Aphrodia just before it's captured by Ishtar. She falls in with a bunch of teen-agers who live for a sort of motorcycle version of Roller Derby. Daredevil rider Hiro and his friends reluctantly join the struggle to free Aphrodia from the invaders. Not surprisingly, Hiro proves an ace at piloting the mono-cyles that are the Aphrodians' secret weapon in the key battle. Venus Wars holds better than many early anime features. The American-influenced designs may annoy purists, but the characters are well developed and the battle scenes well staged, despite the limited technological resources available at the time. (Rated 13 and older: violence, profanity, alcohol use, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon
Description
On the hostile world of Venus, where vicious gangs roam the streets and nations battle for supremacy, a hotshot motorcycle jockey and a feisty Earth journalist are caught in the crossfire as war erupts.

5 out of 5 stars The Beast Within!.......2007-06-06

People say that everyone is wild on the inside, but I don't think that they had robots in mind. The "Transformers" are back and, in my opinion, better than ever! The Autobots and Decepticons are long gone. This story is about their descendents, the smaller, but just as powerful, Maximals and Predicons. The Predicons steal an ancient Golden Disc from the Maximals and try to get away, but they are chased by a Maximal exploration ship. Both of the ships do battle and, during the battle, both are sent back in time millions of years. Both ships crash down onto a strange planet that looks like Earth, and even has the same animals that Earth has, but the planet has TWO moons! All Transformers, both Predicon and Maximal, survive the crash, but there is a problem. The planet is toxic to them and in order to survive, they scan the bodies of animals in the area and take their forms for protection. Now, both sides try desperately to destroy the other in a war for survival...a war for honor...a war of beasts.
NOTE: Sorry for the long review, but when I start writing, I am hard to stop. Thanks for reading and I hope you purchase and enjoy "Beast Wars: The Complete First Season".

5 out of 5 stars Beast Wars season 1.......2007-01-19

Excellent kid DVD. Great jokes and fun situations that these Predacons and Maximals get into. Wonderful voices for each character.

4 out of 5 stars A fresh start to the transformers, the weekest of the 3 seasons, stories not tied together as much.......2007-01-19

When this came out in the mid-90s, I was suprised to catch it on one of the local channels early sunday mornings. Transformers were back, and at the time in really cool computer graphics. The Maximals, decendents of the ancient autobots, and the Predicons, decendents of the ancient decepticons, battle it out on a remote planet (found later to be earth). It is a fun story line watching the first season as they adapt to this new world. episodes 1-2 are tied together, then the other episodes are just kinda loose, no major storyline carried over episode to episode. As the season nears the end, and into the 2 and 3rd seasons, the stories get placed more into a continueing theme storyline. Looking at the computer animation now, it was kind of crude, even compared to the Beast machines episodes, but it was good at the time. So if you like the original transformers, I think you will addapt well to this cartoon series. Check it out, still affordable here on amazon and easy to get a entire series cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-01-04

Like a few others I judged this show before I saw it almost ten years ago and didn't give it a chance. I decided to take a gamble, and behold another late fan. Before I was done watching the first disk I wasted no time ordering the 2nd, 3rd seasons and Beast Machines. Usually I dont trust the costumer reviews, but this is one time I'm glad I did. I wont include any spoilers in this review except the two iconic characters Prime and Megatron are both in this and their characters are still the same for the most part. The new look is cool, but the stories is the strong point. Excellent voice acting and the action scenes are very good. What I really like up to this point, there are NO human companions so far. So if your the type who gave up on Armada and Energon and those human companions annoyed the hell out of you. Then this is your dose of a good product worthy of the Transformers name. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Beast Wars: First Steps.......2006-10-21

BW was getting its feet under it in the first season. That was readily apparent in the voice talent getting a feel for its respective characters, and CGI errors that weren't made later on.

Still, the first season is very solid. It shows the characters thinking their way out of tight spots, dealing with the realities of war, and also includes links to the original Transformers series. (I.E., the appearance of Starscream, mentions of the "Great War", and so on.)

***Spoilers***
One of my personal favorite episodes is "Dark Voyage." It shows Rhinox, Cheetor, Rattrap and Dinobot rendered blind, damaged and low on power in an Energon explosion. Under attack from Waspinator and Terrorsaur, Rhinox has his team "picture a targeting grid in your head, like the one we use in practice simulations." Using this technique, Rhinox is able to tell his team where to fire, and fight off the Preds. A perfect example of using your head when the usual methods don't work.

I recommend this for any tran fan, old and new. The CGI might take some getting used to, particularly if you're used to conventional animation, but once you do, the show will definitely stand out.

a true series a real tribute to the old transformers without the ruins of the new garbage

3 out of 5 stars Great show, but wait for the Sony release.......2007-03-09

Beast Wars is one of the BEST television shows of the 1990s. The characters, the scope -- it's something rarely seen in television at all, let alone children's television.

This was the season that made the series. New characters born, tragic deaths and references to the vast history or the Transformers world. Mixing humor with the heavy drama, season 2 was a monument of television.

However this particular DVD release from Rhino home video presents the show in a dissapointing manner. The menus are hard to navigate, and there are NO SPECIAL FEATURES, except for about 30 seconds of test animation from season one.

Sony/BMG now owns the rights to the original Transformers cartoon, and is releasing it on DVD. Presumably, they will do the same with Beast Wars, since Rhino home video has gone out of bussiness. And if the Sony release of "Transformers: The Movie" (which came with several hours of special features)is any indication of what their Beast Wars release will be like, than it will indeed be worth waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars The heart of the series is in this season, the development of storylines and action start here.......2007-01-19

As the first season wrapped up, the Beast wars series was starting to hit its stide. The stories were good, episodes started to flow together, and characters were developing. The second season continues this and expands even more. This is my favorite string of episodes. I caught the series just at the end of this season, which hooked me for the third season. In the second season you get more plot and ongoing stories, and lots of action. And the tie in to the original transformer's series, briliant. Ravage was a cool addition to the plot, a cassette still, but now a mercenary that speak. It looks like other reviewers have done the plot summaries already for this season. All I can say it that it was the episodes in this season that got me hooked for the third season. Check this set out transformer fans, affordable and fun.

5 out of 5 stars If you dont own this, then you dont like Transformers.......2007-01-10

Man, this is easily one of the best collections I own, and I own a lot. I cant believe that Beast Wars was this good. This is by far the best of the seasons. All the characters and new ones are developed. It has great action. But the stories is the strongest point. I will not spoil anything for you in this review. If your a fan of TF and haven't seen this because you thought the concept of them being animals was stupid, then you are missing out on probably the best series in the Transformers franchise. All 3 seasons are highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing 2nd season.......2006-05-06

Probably the best all round season of all the transformers saga. The characters and plots are taken to the next level and the ongoing storylines are animation are amazing. The only drawback are some of the new beast modes (I am sure the were just bending to the needs of the toy manufacturers) as some of them were just not good. This is the season that all others should be held up to.

5 out of 5 stars The best season of the beast wars, exciting ending, wish it went longer........2007-01-19

This is the season I really got into the beast wars series. It was always on early sunday mornings on one of my local channels. It writes the final chapter in the beast wars...or does it? Great action and stories. This season introduces a couple of new characters, transmetal 2. I feel that it just ended abbruptly, with the middle episodes just being Kinda blah, but the beginning and end were good. Check out Transformers: Beast Machines if you liked this series, especially this season...Beast machines is addictive to watch, and continues a fresh series with tie in to this one. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Kick a** collection.......2007-01-10

If you own the first 2 seasons then you probably already ordered this one. This collection ends the beast wars. I wont spoil anything as usual. I hate spoilers. I'll just say you won't be disappointed with this final season. The stories are great and the action is very good. I love this series. I just wish it could have lasted a little bit longer. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars This war could have happened on Neptune or Earth.......2007-06-18

This is a mixed bag for me. Its not a bad anime but it was nothing breathtaking for me either. What little it had was entertaining. To include the very cheap price I paid for it was worth it.

Venus Wars didn't have a very interesting story to me. The characters weren't very likeable to me either, regardless how developed some of them were. The saving grace was the plot. Venus is inhabited by humans. It was later invaded by humans. The invasion was very quick and decisive. It took no time for marshall law to set in. A few digruntled rebels decided to put a plan together and fight. I'm sure you can figure what happens next.

The battles consist of high speed chases and an all out war. I don't think this anime would satisfy all action junkies. The level of gore is non existent and the blood is minor. So to all you out there expecting to see exploding heads and bullet breakdancin' bodies can forget it. Yet the battles still manage to be decent. A remastered version would've defintly helped the animation. I rarely touch the animation but this is one of the few times I felt it could have been cleaned up some. At some points it just seemed overly dark and outdated to me.

This is a pretty good buy for the cheap price. If you want something straightforward and easy to follow then this is your anime.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Movie.......2007-05-31

I first watched this movie on T.V. and I was in love with it. I found it better then Robotech and the cat Voltron. It has a great storyline and the action parts are awesome. If you are looking for a good story and some good anime then this is it, There is also a manga for those people who love to read the graphic novels.

5 out of 5 stars High-quality, serious story line, good visuals appeal.......2007-04-17

Let me keep this short and sweet. I really like the movie because of the well developed story and the overall feel. It easily ranks with classics like Bubble Gum Crisis, and live action films like Terminator. There is an 80s feel to it, but it is not cheesy in any way. A+

3 out of 5 stars Not Robotech style action but entertaining........2006-07-29

Is a good anime because is HIGH BUGET ACTION-PACKED. But it wasn't cool as Robotech (Macross), the action scenes weren't THAT fast, the kid (main character) doesn't shoot to many bad guys with his "battle-motorcycle" and there wasn't to much battle war shooting like in Robotech.

The action is top notch because the motorcycle runnings were cool, and the action scenes are very reailistic with tons of shooting but not on the battle wars (only on the normal action scenes). And of course, the drama is great with an easy storyline to follow.

The dvd wasn't good because the anime wasn't remastered, so the colors can be dark and annoying sometimes.

Adios.

4 out of 5 stars Actually it's 3.5 but I'd give it a four...........2005-12-26

I watched this on TV and I will give a review. I watched it because there wasn't anything better on. So it's about a hostile takeover in Venus and a group of ordinary people try to survive the war-torn planet. I liked this movie it gave a nice amount of action and it has this feel in a war movie where all you give a damn is will the characters make it or come back in a body bag. However, thrilling as the movie is I had a problem for liking the characters some of them are stupid and some I don't give a care. Like this one girl where she left the safety with the gun trying to kill the general I was laughing and crying at the same time. Not to mention the story I cared less of the nonsense dialogue. Drawbacks aside it's action-packed and it's a pretty cool movie.

The 1996 American update of the 1985 Japanese Transformers series is based on a computer game and a line of toys from Hasbro. Like Voltron: The Third Dimension (1998), which it resembles, Beast Wars reveals just how quickly computer graphics evolved. The weightless characters move in simple, repeated cycles and never come in contact with the ground when they walk or run. The pseudo-Valley Dude dialogue ("Cool your circuits!") and the way the filmmakers trot out every toy in every episode (to remind potential buyers of their existence) recall the bad old days of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Fans of video games and/or toys will enjoy the screaming battles between familiar characters in their organic and robotic forms; others will quickly weary of the repetitive story and over-the-top vocal performances. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Violence. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars "Beast Wars Rawks".......2007-04-05

I grew up watching Johnny Quest. There was lots of automated vilians on that show, therefore Transformers was not a big leap for me.
After Transformers went off the air I was sad, but then I happened upon Beast Wars. WOW, it was so visually exciting to me, I was hooked right away.
Season 1, Episode 22: The Low Road
Original Air Date: 10 February 1997
I think this is the best episode in the whole series. Rhinox ate some bad seeds/pods while grazing, and he farted a nuclear blast in the direction of Megatron.
Don't feel bad for Megatron, he saw it comming and deserved it.
I felt the need to write this review because Transformers the movie is comming out in July 07, and the last time someone wrote a review for this DVD was 2004.
I love this series get it, love it, enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Very underrated.......2004-07-16

Being a cartoon, this show starts out with a lot of stigmas. I loved the original transformers as a kid. This show was unbelievable. Yes, it was all about selling toys but the creators weren't just satisfied with that alone. The story telling is weaven together better than most primetime television shows. There are very few holes. I dare you not to feel a little teery eyed when Dinobot hits the dust. One of the saddest deaths I've seen on the tube. Oh and Austria stop blasting the show. You have obviously not seen the show and are just a cranky Transformers fan that wont give this new show any respect. Those are the only people that do not like this show. Those that haven't seen it and dismiss it as nothing but a stupid cartoon. Then, there's the original Transformers fans that can't accept this show being better and never give it a chance. If you watch this show from the beginning you will be addicted, I guarantee you. Although as said the show really hits it's mark in season 2 with a lot of drama. Season 1 is a lot of introduction. Season 3 is the payoff with the bots heading back home, very good season. Season 4 is a bit of a mess in auto world but it's entertaining. There wasn't anywhere else to go after season 4. It was a fun ride. I give it a 4 but for cartoons this is definitely a big 5 stars.

The American update of the 1985 Japanese Transformers series is based on a computer game and a line of toys from Hasbro. Beast Wars may have looked snazzy in 1996, but computer graphics have progressed so far, so quickly, that the weightless animation and simply rendered backgrounds pale beside contemporary games, let alone series. The ongoing struggle between the good-guy Maximals led by Optimus Primal and the evil Predicons continues. Although there are lots of battles and shootouts, the high-tech weapons do very little damage. The characters screech and argue before undergoing transitions from their animal to mecha forms to cries of "Maximize!" or "Terrorize!" The target audience for the disc is clearly Gen-Yers who grew up watching the show and/or playing the game. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Violence. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars BEAST WARS IS THE BEST.......2003-09-17

I STARTED WATCHING THIS T.V. SERIES WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. NOW THAT THEY HAVE IT ON DVD I COULD WATCH IT WHENEVER. THIS DVD CONTAINS ONE OF MY FAVORITE EPISODE,FALLEN COMRADES. FALLEN COMRADES IS ABOUT A STASIS POD THAT IS CARRYING A MAXIMAL PROTOFORM (KNOWN AS TIGERTRON IN THE SERIES)THE MAXIMAL'S AND PREDACONS RACE TO GET IT. OPTIMUS PRIMAL STARTS TO FLY OFF ON HIS OWN WHEN HE IS AMBUSHED. LATER THEY HAVE TO SEND OUT RATTRAP, RHINOX, AND CHEETOR TO RETRIEVE IT.

DOUBLE JEOPARDY:PREDACONS BROKE MAXIMAL CODE AND OBTAINED A STASIS POD (KNOWN AS BLACK ARACHNIA IN THE SERIES.)RATTRAP BECOMES A TRAITOR TO GET INSIDE THE PREDACONS BASE. THAT WAY HE COULD DESTROY CODE-BREAKING EQUIPMENT.

THE PROBE: A PROBE IS SENT FROM CYBERTRON TO GO AND FIND THE MAXIMALS. UNABLE TO CONTACT THE PROBE THE MAXIMALS ARE FORCED TO BUILD A HOMING ARRAY IN PREDACONS TERRITORY.

GORILLA WARFARE: OPTIMUS AND DINOBOT ARE ATTACKED BY SCORPINAK DURING AN EXPLORATION OF THE EARTH. A VIRAL MINE IS ATTACHED TO OPTIMUS WHEN ATTACKED.THE VIRAL MINE TAKES CONTROL OF OPTIMUS'S PERSONALITY AND TURNS HIM INTO A WAR MACHINE.

A BETTER MOUSETRAP: RHINOX BUILDS A DEFENSE GRID IMPERVIOUS TO PREDACONS ATTACKS. BUT BEFORE PUTTING IN THE FRIEND-FOE PASSWORD, DINOBOTS MISSES HIS ATTACK ON RATTRAP AND HITS THE CONTROLS. THE DEFENSE GRID THINKS THE MAXIMALS ARE ENEMY'S AND STARTS ATTACKING THEM. RATTRAP SETS OFF TO HAVE THE DEFENSE GRID TURNED OFF.

VICTORY: AFTER THE MAXIMALS PUT A CAMEREA INTO THE PREDACONS BASE TERRORSAUR AND MEGATRON GET IN A FIGHT AND THEY BLOW UP THE ENERGON CRYSTALS. IT APPEARS THAT THE MAXIMALS WON THE BEAST WARS. THE MAXIMALS GET THE PART FOR THEIR SHIP AND HEAD OFF FOR HOME. BUT MEGATRON STOPS THEM FROM GETTING AWAY.

1 out of 5 stars A bad copy of 80's cult.......2003-05-19

This spin-off series is really just commercial nonsense. Everybody loved the original characters, why did they restructure the complete series?

1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2003-05-13

This series is waste of time, no personalities, no cult, just a commercial series

5 out of 5 stars Transformers: the Next Generation.......2003-05-05

...This series's visual effects are just as dated as the original Star Trek or even ST:TNG would be, viewed years after creation. But if your only interest is in special FX the charm of shows like these are clearly going to be lost on you. ...

Beast Wars is to Transformers: Generation One what Star Trek: The Next Generation is to the original Trek. Yes, we may love the original characters and series more, but the quality of the storytelling and acting (voice acting in the case of BW) is simply superior.

Created as an updated version of Transformers G1 (and not based on the video game that came two years later), under the guidance of Larry (Babylon 5) DiTillio and Bob (X-Men Evolution) Forward the series evolved very quickly into one of the only good cartoons of the 90s. So highly regarded was this series that it won an Emmy Award in it's first season.

The writers enfused story elements from the original Transformers comic book from Marvel and the original cartoon to create a new continuity, which continues today in the Transformers comics from Dreamwave, and later this fall will continue further in the brand new comic & toyline "Transformers Universe" which will unite both the G1 and BW generations of Transformers in a new battle against Unicron, the main villian from Transformers: the Movie.

The episodes in Beast Wars volume two represent the final growing pains just before the series found it's own footing and evolved into the classic series it became by the end of it's debut season and most especially it's second season, which ended with the best TV cliffhanger since J.R. was [destroyed].

I would not recommend buying this DVD however. There is a season one box set coming this summer that will contain all 26 episodes. This series of single DVDs will not be continued and you will miss out on why Beast Wars is the most beloved Transformers cartoon among the most ... Transfans. It's worth waiting to get the entire first season [at one time].

1 out of 5 stars Why did they cancel the G1 cartoon series?.......2003-03-26

This new series is junk. Just a bad copy of a cult phenomenon. They would have done better to continoue season 4 of the orignal series...
