Hall Of Best Known Animes.......2006-11-25
I never quiet found out what kind of religion this guy was from because of the way they constently used the word "God", but after watching a later serise he has made (which isn't nearly as confusing in my view)
Haibane Renmei was based off his personal life of how he descovered "Salvation" or so I have heard and it seems.
The ending was a bit of an offset since the writters moral seemed to switched from what you (Or me anyway) thought it was, but over all I think the serise was good because it had been awhile since I watched a show that really made you think, not only about the show but you might even find yourself questioning yourself every now and then.
Anyway the serise was quiet orginal for its time (It was introduced in 1998) I also think the charcter "Lain" has a very uniqe hair style from any other anime charcter I've EVER seen and I have seen alot.
I like it, but just like the hair I seem to find you ethier love or hate this anime.
AMEN .......2005-09-24
Serial Experiments has to be one of the biggest wastes of anime viewing time that I have ever experienced. The first half of Episode 11 is a recap of the series shown to accompaniment of Nigel Tufnel on guitar! In the second half of that episode and the one that follows, Lain fights against God! Yes, that's right, an all-out battle against the Almighty deity of the Wired, who is a barefooted guy with poofy long hair out of Aquarian Age, and who curiously wraps his midriff and arms in blue scarves a la Steven Tyler. Layer 13 is my favorite of the series because in it Lain resets everyone's memory so in essence this lame series never took place! Wow, what a relief. If only I could erase the memory of watching it! I have never seen another anime that spiraled so out of control due to a lack of direction as Lain. There was just nothing going on underneath the thin sheen of cyberpunk. It had the right look and a feeling of menace but it just never got out of the starting gate. What a waste of money and character design and mood. The Matrix movies stole Lain's concept but was able to at least craft TWO good films out of it.
Waste of time.......2005-05-11
If this is one of the best animes, the rest must really blow.
I liked the animation, the colors, the mood...but, ultimitley, the lack of an ending, the stupidity of the plot, make this a failed enterprise. Few seem to realize, Lain does not occur on Earth! She seems to have the power to resurect people from the dead, and time travel ability as well! Sheesh. The best thing about the series were her creepy parents. Overall, it was interesting, but it all falls apart in the non-end. On the other hand, most amusing are the attempts by people to "explain" it, as though it makes the least bit of sense! Tired themes done before. Don't pay full price.
Catharsis Doesn't Live Here Anymore.......2003-05-12
Recently I remarked that I keep imagining alternate outcomes to this series. Too many, in fact, to count. It presents a reality whose boundaries with the web keep degrading until, for those like Lain the separation is completely lost. In Lain's world, history can be erased and rewritten, and identity is a matter of perception. And the vision is deeply disquieting.
The underlying structure of Lain's life has eroded. She has no place at school, her parents have left her, and secret agents spying on her confess their love. Against this backdrop Lain persistent questions her own identity - innocent waif or adolescent hoyden. She hopes against hope that she is the true persona.
One can read this as a coming of age story. The powerless Lain of the first episodes gradually coming into a power that is nearly impossible to control. In the previous DVD, Lain attempted to kill God, now she must seek for it among a kaleidoscope of visions. Can she stand the answer? Or will the truth wash her away.
Serial Experiments Lain presents an interior apocalypse. From the chaotic opening sequences of this DVD to the hollow victory of its conclusion the world changes - not with a bang, but a whimper. The Wired is a place where closure is elusive, and loose ends the rule of the day. Where there is no existence without memory.
It is fair to remark that this series gets progressively stranger and stranger. It creates its atmosphere by testing the borders or our own minds. And it doest a pretty remarkable job of carrying it off. The artwork remains capable to producing striking images. Episode 11 'Infornography' is a striking attempt at an e-visualization of the erosion of Lain's well-being. Indeed, the whole series will remain imprinted on the minds of its viewers for some time.
Lain is Lain.......2003-02-03
Wonderful. I love the conclusion of the Lain series; it wouldnt have been better, had I made it up myself:) I love anime that makes my brain excersize while it is being entertained, and this is the highest quality out there.
