True to its Sega video-game roots, this futuristic 60-minute movie includes a lot of yelling, crashing, and exploding on the way to saving the world. Sonic and his sidekicks are determined to thwart a plan that would turn their Land of the Sky into the equivalent of The Land of Darkness, which lurks beneath the surface (and is obviously the former planet Earth). So they plow through to the center of the planet and the ancient city of Robotropolis (the former New York City?) to do righteous battle. The big question of the day is whether the usually evil Dr. Robotnik is telling the truth for once or sending the good guys into a trap. The tape's producers suggest viewers be at least 7 years old because of its violence, but the rudimentary nature of the animation will probably make it appealing only to hard-core action fans among the older-kid crowd. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Nineties-era cartoon fans may remember that at one time, two animated series based on the ultra-popular Sega game character Sonic the Hedgehog sped across TV sets in 1993. This Sonic aired on Saturday mornings between '93-'95 and offered a slightly darker tone and more elaborate stories than its syndicated counterpart, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993 to present). Jaleel White (Urkel from Family Matters) provided the voice of Sonic for both series, but the similarities between the two shows essentially ended there; SatAM (as it was known to its small but loyal fanbase) followed the futuristic adventures of young Sonic and his band of Freedom Fighters (which included Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, and other characters from the original games) as they attempted to foil the evil plans of mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, who had enslaved the city of Mobotropolis and turned its citizens into robots. Where The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog focused on the comic elements of the games, SatAM played more like a serial, with each week presenting a new dilemma for Sonic and his pals to overcome. Sadly, the Freedom Fighters' struggles only lasted for two seasons (though a third was reportedly plotted out), but fans can enjoy the entire 26-episode network run with this four-disc set, which includes a respectable amount of supplemental features. Chief among these are short interviews with White and series head writer Ben Hurst; a smattering of deleted and extended scenes are also included, as is a storyboard-to-screen comparison, a gallery of concept art, and a printable script for the series' pilot, "Heads or Tails." Devoted fans may also glimpse a reproduction of their own Sonic fan art on the set's case. -- Paul Gaita

I've always loved this series and when it came out on dvd I had to get it. It's a very well made product. With thin dvd cases and lots of extras, for one low dirt cheap price!

5 out of 5 stars A look back at Sonic the Hedgehog (AKA Sat-Am).......2007-05-22

What we have with this incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog is arguably the most popular of the 3 American series by DiC and and Sonic X dubbed by 4kids.

With this story of Sonic it is the maturest out of all of them, has a much darker tone to it and dealt with real and adult issues.

SPOILER ALERT:

The episodes are written with a cinematic feel to them in that every episode felt big, dramatic and well worth watching. Season Two is where every episode links up with each other leading up to the season finale that was the Doomsday project.

There was never a dull moment in this series entire run. Particularly with the Antoine double episodes; I think this was done to add some comic relief to the series and the things that Sonic would put Antoine through was hilarious when you see him going nuts.

The voices matched the characters perfectly. Jaleel White is always great as Sonic and Kathie Soucie made Princess Sally Acorn her own character by using her own naturalistic soothing, soft voice. And Jim Cummings in my mind was the perfect voice over for Robotnik with the slow and sinister tone that he used in his voice.

What makes Sat-Am so appealable is that because it was produced in the early 90's it did not suffer the fate of most animated shows of the modern day and age where the dialogue is kiddified. I don't think the dialogue in this show was terribly adult, and by that I don't mean profain material, there was no technical language that kids wouldn't understand. But, the writers of the series wrote a dialogue that was cool with all ages.

What is disappointing was where the series was cancelled just as the writers/producers were getting ready to write and draw for Season 3. Having said that, it didn't help matters that at the time, Power Rangers were extremely popular all over the world. Ben Hurst talks about the plans that they would have done for the third Season and they are good.

I think it would be good for the series to be renewed because the writing and the characters had such depth and richness to them that made the show so enjoyable.

But until then, you can enjoy what is arguably the best Sonic animated series ever produced.

Thank you for your time.

The Saturday morning Sonic cartoon was always one of those special treats when I was younger. I loved Sonic, but I was rarely up early enough to catch these shows when they were on originally, so I'm especially grateful to see them all in a single DVD package now.

Sonic fans probably already know the premise behind these shows: Sonic and the Freedom Fighters are in a continuous guerrilla war with Julian Ivo Kintobor, or "Robotnik," and his myriad robotic minions. Robotnik is able to augment his armies by "roboticizing" innocent Mobians (the anthropomorphic animals, like Sonic and his friends, that are the chief citizens of planet Mobius). Overall, the story is a dark saga of resistance that may seem somewhat trite (due to the similarities with "The Matrix" and the untold dozens of fictional worlds based upon similar premises), but it's still a good story. Fans of the Archie Sonic comics will easily find themselves at home with these cartoons, as they're essentially the same story and characters.

If you were a fan of the shows to begin with, don't hesitate--get these as soon as you can. Other Sonic fans may have a hard time reconciling the ordinarily bright, cheery Sonic universe with these serious shows, but they're pure gold, and I say go for it.

5 out of 5 stars I Remember this series and other sonic series.......2007-05-15

This was the best sonic the headgehog series of the 4 that were made...The Adventures of sonic was to kidish for me, sonic underground was ok a little weird, Sonic x is more like Anime then anything, but the best one was Sonic the Headgehog. It had action, romance and comedy rolled into one.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Volume Set.......2007-04-19

This set is the first in a three volume set. If the sales do well shout will release the next two sets. So, if you like old fashion slap stick, Sonic the Hedgehog, or just love old cartoon puns from the 90's, then this is perfect for you.
These episodes end with the famous "Sonic Says" ending's that taught us lessons and morals in a humorous way. Sonic eould state a fact then show us by beating up or making fun of a badnick.
Each episode is full of humor as Scratch, Grounder, and sometimes Coconuts, chase sonic and tails across Mobius setting traps to destroy these freedom fighters.
For fans of SatAM, there is no Sally, Rotor, Bunnie, Antoine, or the other freedom fighter. This was Sonic's first TV debut and Sonic SatAM came later which introduced the Freedom Fighter's. This shows Freedom Fighters just included Sonic and Tails.

5 out of 5 stars Supersonic Nostalgic Fun.......2007-02-17

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is just plain fun. While this Sonic and Tails tag-along might have you cringing at a few cheesy lines here and there, it's a funny, fast-moving classic that packs a lot of nostalgic punch for those of us who grew up watching it in the 90's. Not only that, it's loaded with old-school Sonic spirit. It's great to see this classic piece of Sonic history coming to DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Every Sonic show is Finally Coming to DVD.......2007-02-13

I remmember as a kid of watching this show many times and it is the funniest. I'm glad the entire series is finally coming to DVD for the first time ever.
And another cool fact is that once this series comes to DVD that means every tv show of Sonic that has ever been aired on tv will be out to buy. Starting with this one and SatAM which is also coming out soon. The DVD box set of Sonic Underground has also been out recently on Amazon but one problem is that box set is a region 2 set meaning it won't play on most DVD players in America but you can get a multi regional DVD player her on Amazon for a really good price. The entire series of Sonic X is now out but each DVD is a volunm and is sold seperatly. Another cool thing you all should know is that in 1996 Japan was making their own Sonic the Hedgehog series but it only ran 2 episodes and got cancled. Later on England bought a copy of those two episodes from Sega and translated it and edited them both together and relesed as the Sonic the Hedgehog The Movie on video in 1999. Recently they digitaly remastered the movie and it is now out on Amazon in DVD format. If you want to start your own BIG Sonic DVD collection, you can start right now.

5 out of 5 stars better than Teeken.......2007-05-04

This is the only sonic movie ever to be made since it first came out in late eigities. This is and old dvd is somewhat difficult to find in local stores try to see if you can find it used a CD ware house or something like that. I got it there along with the second Lethal weapon for under $20 with the tax included. They do have this for sale used on amazom but the copies are severly limited only have about 7 used copies currently avilable for sale. In addition the copies they do have are drastically over priced and cost about 6 to 12 times more than what what they should cost. The copies are in really good condition. The copies on averag the price of seven copies vary but the average price is some where from $70 to $140 dollas for one copy. This movie features sonic, tails, knuckles eggman still call robontnick until they changed it back to egg man during the second cartoon series called sonic X and sonic arch enemy medal sonic. For those of you like the main hot female chracters from sonic X and the newer games such as amy and Rogue I'm sorry to inform you that there not in this short 53 minute movie. Can sonic death his evil menachical duplicate the evil hyper metal sonic with aid of his companions tail the fox and knuckles the echina is planet freedom doom to fall to mercy of vile doctor robotnic find out in the thrilling conclusion. If you think this is two expensive you can get the season five and six sets of sonic for under $50 dollars if you get them in decent condition.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic the Hedgehog (The Uncut Version)!!.......2007-03-27

It may seem that there is no difference between the 1999 DVD version of this movie and the 2004 DVD version. But there is. When England translated the movie they also edited some content out of it too. The 1999 DVD version has those edits but the 2004 version doesn't. For instance Sonic was sapposedly flipping MetalRobotnik off but but England tryed to redraw it so it looked like his index finger but this edit is not on this version.

So if any of you parents want to protect your children then get the 1999 version, but for all you big guys that have been Sonic fans for a long time should get the 2004 version because it ROCKS!!

5 out of 5 stars revieww xD.......2006-10-04

I'm 10 and although I found it extremely funny, I didn't like the voices. Why was Knuckles wearing the hat anyway? xD But still, my favourite part was when Tail's bodyboard went wrong; it was funny hearing him completely scared while Sonic doesn't even think he's in trouble. Oh yeah, and the owl talking to a flower instead of sonic, lol. Definately worth watching!

this movie is one of the funnist movies ive seen ,they animated this movie in 1997 japenese version, well Sega of America felt pretty low of not making a dub for the english speakers, but in 1999 the british ADV films redubbed the whole movie into english, thanks to them nobody in the english speaking world would watch the movie, heck i really enjoy watching this,BTW this has scenes that include perverted scenes, this movie is way better than the crappy Sonic X atleast the movie has good values,HERES MY LAST ADVICE,GET IT NOW!!!

VOICES! Voices aew very OVERRATED AND TERRIBLE! The Jap one is better!

Voices are bad. Sonc The Hedgehog voice: Martin Burke= Britishly bad. I dont hate british people. But Sonic's voice is a terrible TERRIBLE!! He sounds like this "Mistah prisendent! Can you HEAR ME!! In a bad way. This voice is very bad. They could at least tried Sonic Adventure voices. Sonic also stuck up a certain finger.

Miles "Tails" Prower voice: Well, he sounds like he has a cold. He sounds like this.." Im very Sawy" he also does some stuff that little kids dont know. Like holding Sara's... Brea--- never mind.

Knuckles the Echindna: Hmmm... his voice is bad. He cant fly, he can only glide. He has no intention of guarding the master emerald. all he does is just be an idiot. voice is like a girly version of Kevin from Ed Edd Eddy.

Sara: . How can she let tails hold her bre--- nevermind.

Bird: Good. Best one there is.

Eggman:...decent.. but not original!

Buy the DVD and put it japanese one. This is really a combination of the two episode Sonic ova. Knuckles also not a mole. They call him a mole in the bios. He is a echindna... and during a fight... not spoiling.

5 out of 5 stars A taste of the golden past!.......2006-08-31

I remember back in 1993 when I used to wake up at 8 in the morning on Saturdays to watch this masterpiece of a show. I knew off hand that the voice cast was made up of some of the best actors and actresses in the day, and even still (Jaleel White, Kath Soucie, Christene Cavanaugh, Rob Paulson, Jim Cummings... BEST... ROBOTNIK... EVER, and Charles Adler as that whiney Snively), how the sceneries were always brilliantly and beautifully painted (from the serene, lush beauty of Knothole, to the desolate, bleak, and polluted expance of Robotropolis, to the magnificent bird's-eye-view of the mountains in "Sonic and the Secret Scrolls"), the well-thought out music... and, of course, how all those elements put together, along with good plots, made a solid show.

Sadly, they only give you a small portion of episodes, and though way they made the menus was highly dissapointing (I know they tried to aim it toward kids, but having Inspector Gadget instruct you how to work the menu seemed, unecessary, at best), it gladfully doesn't deter the nostalgic feeling I have every time I watch these episodes.

Now... if DIC REALLY want to make some money, maybe they should play it smart and make a box-set collection for both Seasons 1 and 2, probably making a new set for them from scratch (instead of using the previous format they used with this DVD)... I mean, they've recently done it with the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, AND the Zelda series.

This show need to be justified for its excellence! DIC, please make a box-set for this show, wherever you are.

3 out of 5 stars DVD is EDITED And key episodes previously released on VHS were omitted.......2006-02-13

Buy the Hooked on Sonics, Sonic Racer, and Super Sonic VHS tapes at a yard sale for fifty cents instead of this DVD. You'd get more for your money than buying this Super Sonic compilation DVD... minus the Secret Scrolls episode.

Amazon has apparently discontinued selling this Sonic DVD. It's such a shame that the anime Sonic X gets several DVD releases a year, and we SatAM fans get THIS. Simply put, this compilation DVD isn't as good as many think it is. It's EDITED and also omits the following episodes previously released on VHS: Hooked On Sonics and Warped Sonic. These two episodes were among my favorite SatAM episodes from the first season and yet they were inexplicably left out.

5 out of 5 stars A Pop Culture Icon At His Best.......2005-11-25

1993 might as well have been called the "Year of the Hedgehog." After all, it was that year that Sonic made the complete transition from popular video game character to pop culture icon. A countless amount of spin-off merchandise was released.

Among all other things was the airing of two completely different "Sonic" cartoons, one that ran on weekdays, the other on Saturday Mornings. The former was a silly light-hearted affair while the latter took the "blue blur" and placed him in a much darker atmosphere. Popularly dubbed the "SatAM" by fans, the series finally saw DVD release in 2002. It told the story of Sonic and a brave band of Freedom Fighters led by Princess Sally struggling to free their home planet of Mobius from the clutches of the mad dictator Dr. Robotnik. In addition to above-average animation for its day, the show boasted a talented voice cast that included "Family Matters" star Jaleel White and VA legend Jim Cummings. As Sonic, White provided a great sense of energy and enthusiasm, arguably fitting the role just as well as Errol Flynn fit Robin Hood. Cummings provided a compelling and, at times, chilling portrayal as the cyborg villain Robotnik and made some of the best contributions to the series. The episodes included in the "Super Sonic" dvd include "Super Sonic," "Sonic & Sally, "Sonic Racer," "Sonic Boom" and "Sonic & the Secret Scrolls."

Super Sonic- Sonic and Robotnik race against each other to steal a computer of magic spells; a fairly simple episode than nonetheless depicts the hedgehog at his absolute best.
4/4

Sonic & Sally- Robotnik attempts to infiltrate the Freedom Fighters with a robotic Princess Sally; an outstanding episode due to its action and its heart. 4/4

Sonic Racer- Robotnik holds a speed contest as a means of trapping Sonic; another simple episode that is still highly enjoyable due to its action-oriented nature. 4/4

Sonic Boom- Princess Sally seeks out her father, the rightful ruler of Mobius; an okay episode that raises questions handled much better during the second season. 2.5/4

Sonic & the Secret Scrolls- The Freedom Fighters seek out the scrolls of the title; a fun escapist episode that nonetheless brings up plot points that were later abandoned over the course of the series. 3/4

This feature-length "SatAM" DVD is very likely the closest to a movie that fans of the series will get. And forget Urkel, this Jaleel White vehicle represents the former star's best work yet.

5 out of 5 stars Best Show Ever!!!.......2005-08-28

This was the greatest show ever! It kinda followed the sonic the hedgehog comics, which is a big plus because I love the comics and have read all of them. This show was the best show to ever run on tv and the best sonic show too. I would spend $100 on this show if I had to! Sadly, at the end of Season 2 of this show, on the very last episode, the show ended at a huge cliffhanger, it left millions of fans and people wondering and crying. The show ended with Robotniks' sidekick, Snively, comeing back alive after Sonic destryoed the doomsday operation with Sally's help, he came out of what I think was an escape pod or something and had an evil look on his face and an evil laughter. He came out of the shadows and said he was now going to be the villain since Robotnik was gone and shouted that he would be able to suceed with help, and that he wasn't alone, then two red eyes appeared in the shadows after Snively said that, then...the show ended. No one ever got to find out what happened to Sonic, the never got to see what happened to Snively and what he was going to do, they never got to see whos eyes were in the shadows behind Snively. The show was over. People to this day years later are still trying to save the show. You can help too. If many people start buying this dvd or this original Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, known to many as "SatAM"(Saturday Morning Cartoon Show), sega may still bring back the show, but it is going to take alot of people. You could try searching around the internet for places trying to save the show and maybe just one day all the sad sonic fans can see what happenes to thier favorite blue hedgehog. It would also be nice if they could turn the third season of this show into a movie and release it. I would buy it for sure! Anyway, if you like she show it would mean alot if you tryed to help/save it. It may be years later after the show is long been canceled, but you can never give up or quit. I still post flyers for the show everynow and then, and buy doing that, I hope that at least one person will buy the show. I join websites like 4kids.tv and go to remind everyone of the old canceled Sonic the Hedgehog(SatAM) show and see if anyone will help. I would love to see this show again and I hope that someone who can really help reads this! Also, sorry for the long review.

4 out of 5 stars 3/4 Past Cool..........2005-07-06

One of the prime decades of Saturday morning cartoon shows was definitely during the mid-90s. After turning in the laborious week at school, it was fun to kick back and watch some kick-butt cartoons. With classic series like "The Tick", "Animaniacs", "Batman: The Animated Series", old-school Looney Tunes shorts, and others, I was happy as a clam. But perhaps my most favorite cartoon was the crown jewel of ABC Saturday Morning. Sonic was my Tupac Shakur, for lack of a better comparison. His intrigue and unbeatable cool ate up many an hour of my time playing his games, and the fact that he had the fly-est cartoon on air, and a pretty good comic book, was just icing on the cake.

Now, ten years later, in this age of smaller, faster, and cooler stuff, I had a mid-teen crisis, and decided to purchase this on DVD. However, unlike a lot of cartoons that you see where you go, "I can't believe I liked this crap!" (Power Rangers, anyone?), I was really surprised by how well this series has aged. Sonic fans, this is your daydream come true, and new converts to the Blue Blur, I strongly suggest you check this out.

You wonder why I say "daydream"; don't get me wrong, these episodes are great, but they're first season episodes. In this cartoon's 2-season history (again, thank u Power Rangers), the second season was where the storyline got meatier and the writing was better. It would be nice for DiC to release this show in a complete season box set, what with the solid following it's developed on the Internet, but that's kind of nitpicking, really. This is still a great introduction to a fabulous cartoon.

One of the strongest traits about this show was its characters. Yeah, it was based on a video game, but that didn't matter. The guys who made this were given a whole sandbox courtesy of the dudes at Sega to tweak and fatten up the Blue Blur's history and mystery. With a complex storyline heavily influenced by "Star Wars", "Lord of the Rings", and even "Batman: The Animated Series", "Sonic" presented something totally new and immersive to a traditionally mediocre genre. You can really feel for the struggle of the Freedom Fighters, that is, if humanoid animal characters don't bother you.

I feel kind of sorry for Jaleel White because of his Urkel reputation. He's got a good knack for voice acting providing the voice for Sonic, and even though the dialogue is occasionally cheesy, particularly in the episode "Super Sonic", he manages to make Sonic a full 3D character. Getting back to "Super Sonic", I can almost sense the nerd behind the line "My computer he comes to steal!" Kath Soucie, who provides the voice of the pragmatic and beautiful leader Princess Sally Acorn, proves why she's one of the most sought-after talents in the voice acting business, and Christine Cavanaugh delivers an oh-so-charming performance as the gorgeous southern gal Bunnie Rabbot, who serves as Sally's loyal friend and as a subliminal message about overcoming physical disabilities. The only character who annoys me is Tails, because of his querulous, Anakin Skywalker-like attitude. But Jim Cummings, the guy who voices Robotnik, delivers with a brilliant perfomance, creating a great contrast between the Teddy Roosevelt video game Robotnik and his ominous, formidable SatAM villain.

Overall, this is a solid, nostalgic collection, although the promotional trailers for DiC are annoying, and PLEASE, WHY DOES INSPECTOR GADGET HAVE TO BE THE MENU HELP?! Go Go Goaway! Plus, the series isn't perfect. There is some childish dialogue and although the animation is good, the voice timing isn't the best by a long shot. However, it matters not. This is the best "Sonic" cartoon you can find, and if you're feeling nostalgic for animation, check this out. Welcome back, Sonic. You were kinda missed.

FINAL SCORE-8.5/10

PS-answer all the questions right in the pretty lousy game, and you get a pretty solid bonus episode.
