4 out of 5 stars A Great Non-Mainstream Anime.......2006-04-04

The only problem I had with Birdy the Mighty was the voice-acting. While it wasn't terrible, it seemed to me that the voice actors were poorly matched to there characters, especially in the case of the main characters: Tsutomu has a rather irritating high-pitch to his voice and Birdy is low-key and somewhat bland at times. I will say that, by the end of this DVD, the voices do grow on you and really seem to come into their own. It's just early on that the voices seem odd.

The story of Birdy the Mighty follows two characters. Tsutomu is a school student dreading his entrance exams, and Birdy is an intergalactic police officer with super strength. One night, these two meet quite by accident and Birdy kills Tsutomu. In order to save his life, though, Birdy is forced to merge herself with him. Thus, they become one, and Tsutomu is forced to help Birdy save Earth from alien drug lords, while Birdy is forced to deal with all those emotions a high school male goes through in his everyday life. Problems arise, however, when Birdy decides to take over and changes into her own body, and people are around to see, including Tsutomu friends and family.

Going along with the comedy-based story are some decent scenes of action and surprisingly good animation despite the times in which this was produced. That's not surprising, though, considering the pedigree of the creators involved with this anime, including the director of Ninja Scroll, my favorite short on the Animatrix "The Program," and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. What's also amazing about this anime is that it has yet to have a real fan-base considering how good it really is. This truly is a great anime worth seeing, and I'd recommend it this volume along with the second one to fans of Ranma or FLCL (as the animation has some shades of what can be found in FLCL).

4 out of 5 stars Underrated, quirky and fun.......2005-12-22

Birdy The Mighty (Tetsuwan Birdy) set is soooo hard to find. Why? Because this gem is soooo underrated. Too bad because there's so much cool stuff in this anime.

The action scenes are very well animated. Simple but not childish, fluid but not too elaborate. The characters are believable too. Birdy is cute and quirky, strong but not imposing, and hotheaded but not foolish. Plus she's quite sexy because she's one of those rare female anime characters that doesn't try too hard to be sexy e.g. her "body parts" are not exaggerated. Check out her hair too. As for Tsutomu, he is your average anime teenager but he is generally likable e.g. not too geeky or annoying and some times mature. The bad guys, especially George Gomez, are interesting too.

However, the weakness may be the story itself. As it is not unique or ground breaking or whatchamacallit. Plus it is only four episodes long. Too short for anything to be developed maturely. Believe you me though, it is far from boring. I really like Birdy, too bad there's no more to it than these OVAs.

But it's all quirky and fun nonetheless!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most underated anime ever.......2004-01-19

Well there's stuff like Evangelion that gets alot of notice and alot of people see. There's other anime that falls through the cracks. This is one of them. I saw this on VHS a few years ago and am happy that it's now going to be on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing Anime.......2001-01-27

Birdy the Mighty is funny and action packed. The visual effects and voice acting for the dubb is fantastic. I love sci fi anime. If you love this I recommend you see Battle Angel and Macross(don't know which movie or volume if any other).
