The fourth Pokémon feature follows the pattern set by the previous three--and falls into the same traps. The TV series depicts the modest adventures of Pokémon trainer Ash Ketcham and his friends Brock and Misty as they roam an imaginary world, fighting matches and making friends. The features add elaborate CG effects that don't mesh with the flat, drawn characters, and over-scaled threats that feel beyond Ash's abilities to resolve. Forty years ago, Sam, a young trainer, meets the 251st Pokémon Celebi (it looks like Tinkerbell with a goldfish for a head). To escape a mean hunter, Celebi brings Sam to the present day, where they meet Ash & Company. They also meet the evil Iron Mask Marauder who's supposed to be a member of Team Rocket, but who's much nastier than the comically inept Jessie, James, and Meowth. The Marauder corrupts Celebi with a "dark ball" and forces it to create a monster out of trees, branches, etc., that is blatantly copied from the Night Walker in Princess Mononoke. Ash and his friends eventually save the day, the Pokémon, and the forest--but it all feels like we've been there/done that. --Charles Solomon

Want to get at the heart of the Pokémon craze? Fast-forward to the end of this video to see the video exclusive Pokérap, a music video that lists all 151 collectable Pokémon. That's right: 151 creatures to collect. Think of them as the starting lineup of all the NBA teams. Instead of knowing a player's stats, Pokémon fans have to memorize creature types and a Pokémon's certain strength.
This video contains three episodes from the animated Pokémon TV series. Our intrepid heroes Ash and his friends continue their quest, collecting Pokémon along the way. In "Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village," the heroes stumble on to a Pokémon health spa where injured Pokémon creatures can take in a little R&R. The courageous Bulbasaur that defends the spa does not take kindly to Ash's desire to be his trainer (and keep him in his Pokéball storage container). "Charmander--The Stray Pokémon" finds the cute title character abandoned on a rock awaiting a new owner. The poor critter will die if his tail light ever goes out. What will he do in the upcoming thunderstorm? The title characters in "Here Comes the Squirtle Squad" are water-spouting beasts with Jack Nicholson sunglasses and a one-word vocabulary ("squirtle, squirtle" is heard in a dozen different variations). Of course, Team Rocket is there to foil our heroes and steal Ash's valuable Pickachu. --Doug Thomas
Description
Ash and his friends discover a spa for wounded Pokemon that is guarded by a brave Bulbasaur. Can Ash and Bulbasaur protect the spa from Team Rocket's evil plans? Ash finds an abandoned Charmander and both of them learn a lesson in loyalty. Finally, Ash runs into a gang of delinquent Squirtle that have united with Team Rocket to cause trouble... Will Team Rocket ever go straight?
Customer Reviews:
The plot progresses in an odd way. Still good though........2003-08-14
So, our "hero" Ash got lost on his ay to the 3rd gym.Doesn't really surpise me.. Anyway, after stumbling through a bunch of traps, he finds the Hidden Village (TM), a spa for abandoned pokemon. It's protected by a Bulbasaur since pokemon thieves would certainly like to catch all these injured pokemon. Of course Jessie and James show up, and Ash decides to help Bulbasaur to beat them. Melanie, Bulbasaur's trainer, asks Ash to take Bulbasaur along on his journey so he can grow stronger. So there we have another pokemon.
Later, the group finds a Charmander on a rock in the woods. It's waiting for it's trainer, so Ash can't really catch it. A bit later, at the pokemon center, he overhears Damian, Charmander's trainer, brag about how he abandoned his pokemon. After Brock beats up Damian, Ash and the others save the pokemon. The next morning, Charmander is gone again, but it returns to save Ash and Pikachu from Jessie and James, who have appearantly used their heads for a change, and donned electric-proof suits. They weren't fireproof though. Damian returns and want Charmander back, but Charmander burns him and goes with Ash instead.
Even later, the group meets a gang of Squirtles who are terrorizing a nearby town. After teaming up with Meowth, they kidnap Ash and the others so Jessie and James can get Pikachu. Jessie has other plans, and decides to bomb the Squirtle Squad to death with a lot of bombs dropped from their balloon. Meanwhile, Ash tries to save Pikachu by getting a Super Potion, but is knocked out by Gary. When he returns, Jessie and James have started their attack. Ash saves the leader Squirtle when he breaks his leg in the battlefield (and is unable to run from the bombs) and together they destroy the balloon and puut out the fire. The Squirtle leader decides to go with Ash.
Well, certainly a decent batch of episodes, even though it seems a bit silly that Ash catches all three starter pokemon at once. But if he didn't, I'm sure we would've gotten a bunch of crappy filler between these episodes, so it's okay. But he really should get to the 3rd gym soon. In the Charmander episode it appears he's headed North of Cerulean, which means he's been walking in a circle for 3 episodes. Hm.

I really like this video.Ash ends up catching all the starting Pokemon that he could have gotten from Prof. Oak. In Bulbasaurs hidden village Team Rocket attemps to steal Pokemon from a place for pokemon to recover in the forest. In Charmander:The Stray Pokemon Ash and his freinds have to save a abandoned Charmander. In here comes the squirtle squad Team Rocket has convinced a gang of squirtles to help them but Ash,Misty, and Brock manage to convince them that Team Rocket are the bad ones.
not my fave.......2000-10-06
altho i usually like pokemon, this video was never my favorite. it does introduce 3 important pokemon, squirtle, charmander, and bulbasaur, but the cartoons are fairly boring, esp. the 1 about bulbasaur. the srtay charmander is kinda cute, and the squirtle squad aint so bad, but cuda been better.
Pokefriends is my 4 year olds favorite pokemon movie........2000-08-31
Good movie. A 13 year old may find it a bit dull because noone is "saving the world" but I like the movie because it actually teaches a few things about kindness and consideration for others. The movie also shows some of the history of Ash and his pokemon which is essential for understanding some of the idiosyncrysies of charmander. I highly recommend!

Pokemon Rules.......2006-12-24
I love Pokemon. The good guys always win and the bad guys always learn a lesson and often times help the good guys out, sometimes without even knowing it. Plus, anything that keeps my daughter entertained is wonderful. My daughter fell in love with Pokemon at 4 years old and is now 12 and still loves it. This movie has gotten alot of use in our household.
The whole Movies - I've Seen EM!.......2006-06-27
This movie is about celebi captured by the iron masked maruder.
when sam finds himself almost concius inside a twig monster, there goes it!and he just evolved a huge mtagross into bad monsters.
how did celebi get caught?even it's so powerful,it can't be captured by a master ball. it's caught by a dark ball!
Nothing is known about 'em.
See? Look:
Deatails:
Type:??????
Ability???????
Strength???????
and then, the iron masked maruder is a part of team rocket!
the boy half of team rocket is:james! he got knocked off a branch, with the other team rocket members, jessie and meowth.
also fellow trainers, misty, ash, brock and pikachu got knocked off.
and sam finds himself in a forest full of butterfree with
stun spores!
but will ash and sam stop the iron masked maruder?
pikachu also has a hide - and - seek game in the bonus movie,
but his whole crowd of pokemon playing are interupted by a huge
mowing machine pushed by meowth.after that,he pushed along and falls into a chimney.but the mowing machine popped his ballon off
with wobbuffet! the pokemon are chased in a hedge maze by the huge mowing machine.
the pokemon threw the mowing machine into water, but it came back up, chasing them. they tried their attacks, but it would not work.
See my Pokemon 3 review!
