Better then Perfect Collection.......2007-05-24

For one artwork on box is far better then was on orig box set.

Picture qaulity is better. Colors are more vivid and what was faded looking is not anymore. The jittery picture is not jittery any more.

Sound is better.

I am sellin my perfect collection, no need for two of the same series just a waste of space, for those who are gettin this and the orig perfect collection I ask why are you doin that.

Perhaps the most violent anime series since 'Spaceship Runaway Ideon', Neon Genesis Evangelion (which interestingly means new genesis or the good news of the new genesis, after the Greek word for the Christian gospel which is 'evangelion' or 'the good news' ) is a deeply complex and dark series exploring the minds of several young children and adults in a post-apocalyptic world where they must defend the last of mankind against mysterious invaders called 'angels.'

Central to the story is a young boy called Shinji Ikari. Shinji is a anti-hero, a young boy who is so overcome by a weakness of will, by depression, acedia and alienation, he is unable to do anything on his own. As the series unfolds we find out he was abandoned by his father Gendo (now the head of a secret military organisation called NERV) and his mother died in a mysterious accident involving a giant robot called an evangelion.

We find out Shinji is one of the special 'children' who can pilot these robots and defeat the angels, which seem to be bent on finishing off humanity. Half of the world's population died in an incident called 'First impact', where a meteorite moving at close to the speed of light strikes Antartica and destroys the continent and melts all of the ice, leading to the Earth's axis shifting, immense floods and tsunamis, and wars using horrible weapons such as the 'N2 mine' which can destroy cities.

Shinji meets other characters, including Rei, a mysterious young girl, Azuka, a lively redhaired prodigy who speaks German, Japanese and English fluently (and is also a maths whiz) and the sexy Misato, a busty commander who takes Shinji into her care. Shinji confronts many difficulties in relating to all of these characters, due in part to his own deep flaws and also the clashes between his introverted nature and the more outgoing personalities of Gendo, Azuka and Misato, as well as the 'damsel in distress' Rei. While showing bravery, compassion, and love on many occasions, we also see the darker sides of Shinji's nature, including his repressed sexual desire for all of these women and girls, his Oedipal hatred of his father, his neurotic tendency to avoid responsibility, as well as dark rage, anger, hate, and his insensitivity to the pain of others (a scene in one of the later episodes where Misato, who has protected and given him so much, is crying after hearing her beloved boyfriend die, approaches him for some compassion and comfort, but Shinji backs away and spurns her, is very telling of all of his weaknesses as a person).

As the series progresses we venture deeper and deeper into the fragmented and tormented psyches of all of the characters, and some dark truths are uncovered. It seems that NERV is being controlled by a secretive organisation called SEELE who is bent on bringing about the end of humankind through 'third impact', while Gendo has plans for his own. All seem to be involved in a project called the 'Instrumentality' project, which aims to transform humanity from its dead end state where all are seperate beings living lives of pain, suffering and isolation to a complete humanity where all individuals are remerged with each other, all other life, and the Godhead. SEELE appears to desire to bring this about on man's terms, not those of the Angels, whose aim appears to be to unite with a being in the depths of the NERV base called Lilith, and bring about the End on their terms.

The series concludes with the defeat of the angels, the destruction of NERV and the death of all main characters, either in the mind or the flesh. The final episode appears to be where Shinji ventures inside the depths of his concious and unconcious mind seeking the final answer to his existence, which he finds paradoxically in his own being and existence; by knowing himself Shinji finds he knows All and in so doing has the power to make whatever destiny for himself he chooses.

The series, while dark and depressing in many ways, is also very interesting and worth watching and reflecting on its themes. The journey inside to find God and the answer to existence is a timeless truth acknowledged from world religious and philosophical traditions as diverse as Philo and St Augustine in the West to Buddha and Shankara in the East. Indeed St Augustine said when you look inside yourself (like another Greek Philosopher Plotinus) you will find God and also all possibility. When Shinji finds the Absolute it is a white formless nothingness, and the world comes into being through making choices as an individual being, negating some possibilities over some others. Then the world of multplicity and all its wonders and colours comes into being, and Shinji realises another deep philosophical and mystical truth; the world does not only make you, you also make your own world through your own free will and its choices. 'I think and I will, therefore I am' was Augustine's maxim and Shinji also discovers this truth by looking within. Shinji encounters various possibilities ranging from a dull fantasy world where every petty desire of his is met to a more complicated world containing pain and contradiction and suffering. Shinji learns finally it is not so bad to be yourself after all, and to accept and love himself, and in doing so, he will also be loved by others for doing so.

The whole series then is really a mythical allegory (told in 21st century cartoon anime) about the inner journey to self discovery. Anno uses various symbols and ideas to convey these in symbolic and mythical form; however Freudians, Jungians, students of mythology or followers of Joseph Campbell, students of mysticism, or philosophers will all recognise the diverse signposts and where they are heading. The final message of the series seems simple enough; know yourself and you will know All, but is also complicated and very difficult because it is so hard for us to see past the world and our distortions and biases we project on it because of our flaws and needs. To see things as they really are, we must understand ourself; but this is the most difficult and also the simplest task. I think Anno's challenge to us mirrors his own journey (he was deeply depressed while writing and directing the series) and like other creative artists, for Anno there is no compromise.

The series and its ending differ in the 'Alternate' Evangelion though I think the basic themes are much the same.

A Fascinating start to what appears to be an awesome Series!.......2006-02-13

I have never seen this show before, so I am coming to you a beginer with very limited Anime knowledge. I love this genre, however, I have only begone to dabble.
First off, the magnificent animation blew me away. The action was very gripping and the backstories really started to pull me in. I especially liked the Evangelion robot, and thought that it was a cool twist in the series.
The characters so far seem like your typical anime cast, unique and unpredictable as ever. I remember maybe two names so I can't really go into detail much further than that.
My only limited complaints would be that the english actor voicing "shinji" had a vocal range that was a bit too high for me. I know he's fourteen, but most of the guys I know sound a lot deeper than that, so it just bothered me a bit. Also, the fourth episode didn't really take you anywhere, but leaves you wondering "where the heck is this going to go?" and "is the next DVD worth getting?"
Well I can't answer either of these and I can only hope they will get better. I'll be updating each time I watch the next DVD so look for my comments!
SO far, I recommend this and look forward to watching more. Hopefully it will get better and really deliver!

Product Description Clarification.......2006-02-10

I am writing this in response to a review I read which clearly misrepresents the product. The aformentionioned review states that this DVD contains new scenes and is in fact a "remake" of this popular series. THIS IS CLEARLY INCORRECT. The product at hand is simply a re-mastering of the original series. Therefore, if you want better picture quality and better sound quality, this is where to get it. Additionally, as mentioned, each DVD contains commentary from people involved with the English voice dub, some of which are interesting, some less. The last two DVDs in the Evangelion Platinum series also contain the directors cut versions of four episodes as seen previously on ADV's directors cut DVD releases, (albiet remastered here.)

That being said, this is the favorite anime series of many people, myself included. Hopefully this is of some help.

Ok there is something wrong here, I swear. First of all please give a negative review some ratings in order to be the first somebody reads because if somebody buys this anime based on the stars he will be very dissapointed. I bought "THE BEST ANIME SERIES OF ALL TIME" only by seing the high reviews. So many people can't be wrong...can they??? hahahaha!

How can't people give this anime such high ratings? I don't understand. There is no plot. NO STORY. It's ok for a series to have a start, a story to follow and an ending. Its ok to have some gaps, some minor character development problems etc and still be mediocre. But if it has no beggining, nothing in between and certainly no ending then what???? Is this follow the masses or something?

The first episode was something and I thought (besides some elements that portraided what is to follow) that this must be a good series. From the second episode and further on....nothing. Nada!!!

If somebody argues and says that it has a great story, the aliens attacks (or something don't know what) and we have to save the world. Ok. No problem. Let's say it has a great story, maybe I am stupid and I don't understand it. Here comes the most dreaded aspect of this series.

How can a child, teenager, adult or even an infant cope with, -attach to-, understand, sympathise, get in the shoes of the character?????????????????? The characters in this series have serious mental problems and my only understanding is that people who like this anime have serious mental and psychological problems. Where can I begin? The main character? I don't really wanna get into the details I could write a whole essay. I don't care If you like this anime or not. And I would never as a teen attach to a character with a low self esteem, @%#@%% mind, whose mother had suicide or something and his father hate him (the stereotype signifies some other sexual orientations but they kept it simple in the anime LOL LOL). Moreover, the masculine types in this film are females! and with great social and psychological issues here!!

So parent who want to buy this for your children beware. P Ratings can be deceiving.

How can I watch Robotech when I am 12 and now that I am 27 still loving it? How can Trigun, Captain Harlock and other anime make sense and Evangelion not?

You deserve what you get so if you like this anime by all means do. Just think why you like it besides "the great animation" and "the great remastered edition". If you ask me the guys who created it ( who started the first 2 episodes and then said lets make some more) knew the great marketing tool that amazon is and did a really good job in writting reviews. If my review won't be here in 2 weeks this will be the proof of it.
ps (the mental problems that the characters in this anime have still amazes me....it should be rated at least R)

Interesting.......2005-08-25

This dvd in my mind is not as exciting as the other dvds, yet it still sheds some light on certain characters.

In the first episode, we learn about Misato and her past. There is also an extremely cool scene in which the evas must stop an angel coming to earth. I think one of the more interesting scenes of the series is when the three kids are sitting on a cliff watching the sky without the illuminated city. The creator must of thought about this scene for a while, as it is perfect.

The second episode talks about Ritsuko alot. The magi are introduced, yet they aren't really made to seem that important later in the series.

The final episode is not particularly interesting to begin with because it is a recap of things you will have already seen. The end of the episode talks about Rei a little bit, and that is important for later.

If you loved the first three dvds, my review isn't going to stop you from buying this one. If you haven't seen the series yet, do yourself a favor and watch the entire series. I have talked to some people who didn't like the first dvd or saw a few episodes in the middle. Once you watch them all, you can truly appreciate the series.

Getting Better & Better.......2005-04-25

This series continues to grow on me as I watch it. Volume 4 contains three episodes, 12 - 14, in the continuing saga of the giant Eva mechas' battle against the ruthless and mysterious "angels" bent on destroying the remnants of humanity left on Earth.

Episode 12 - We learn something about Captain Misato Katsuragi's past, and the reason she joined N.E.R.V. The ninth angel Sahaqiel is plummeting to Earth. The only way the Evas can stop it is with their bare hands?!?

Episode 13 - More character development, this time for Dr. Ritsuko Akagi. We learn it was her mother who developed the three supercomputers known as the "Magi." The tenth angel Ireul appears right inside command headquarters as a computer virus.

I applaud the presence of strong female characters such as Misato and Ritsuko in this series.

Episode 14 - An odd combination of a recap episode. Recaps the battles with all the Angels thus far. Recap is punctuated with glimpses of the mysterious organization known as Selles, that seems to have some power over N.E.R.V. and Commander Ikari. We also have a strange poetic, monolouge by Rei. Like I said, an odd episode.

And once again another volume in the Platinum series has been released but unfortunatly its beginning to look as if this series, which started of very promising, can't fullfil the expectations which were created over the past releases.

This is still the Platinum release which offers an enhanced release of the original Evangelion series. It features better picture and sound quality - the sound even has been remade to meet 5.1 surround requirements - but all the extra's which one can expect from such a release are beginning to look much less special than they once did.

At first the number of episodes has been reduced from 4 to 3 (featuring episodes 15, 16 and 17), thus its getting at the same level of the original release. But all the extra's themselves are becoming mere re-runs of things already seen in the past as well! I really expected much better from ADV, especially when you take a look at another release of an outstanding Anime series; Robotech. This too is undergoing a re-release right now but when comparing the original boxed release of Robotech - Macross saga (3 boxes containing 3 dvd's each (2 episode disks and one special contents disk)) with the current Evangelion Platinum series the winner would still be Robotech; won by variation in every account.

So; apart from the 3 episodes on this disk it has a 12 page booklet, features an animatic of episode 15 (the same thing we've seen on disk 2), a commentary with Tiffany Grant (we've already met her on the previous 2 releases) and Matt Greenfield (we've heard and seen him on the previous release as well) and a "documentary" about (what a surprise) "That little red haired girl" where Tiffany Grant shows us her Evangelion collection (toys, posters, etc.).

Now; don't get me wrong here. This is a decent release with 3 cool restored Evangelion episodes, lets not lose track and forget that in the end its all about the cartoon itself. But having said that I simply cannot deny that this release is starting to look like a product which centres around a company and a few persons and totally seems to ignore what this is all about. While I consider the documentary about Tiffany's collection not that bad it would have been more interesting to focus on where those toys came from, get more into the hype called Evangelion. And although its nice to listen to yet another commentary I think that an interview with the original Japanese artists of the serie would have been more interesting. Allthough its nice to have the clean opening and ending on every disk so far it would also have been interesting to get into the shock which Evangelion has managed to create with episode 16. Even if they would have gone into that little extra detail about how the show was almost cancelled; showing us the warnings which have been send back then...

To summarize: ADV is making a decent collection but I can't begin to wonder if all the extra's are meant to be about the Evangelion serie or are mere there for the fame and glory of ADV and its co-workers. I'm not denying that they're doing a very nice job when it comes to the DVD releases and creating extra dubs. But please let us not forget that this serie is originally Japanese, with Japanese voice actors and a very rich history which goes back much longer than the people of ADV.

Is this disk worth it ? I suppose so. Still; if you don't care much about extra stuff like animatics, commentaties and such I'd seriously consider the orginal release. Although I think this collection is good fun, *nothing* can beat an original.

Wow!.......2005-01-02

Now that was a truly awesome DVD. There may have only been three episodes, but they were excellent. A surprising amount of stuff happens in this short volume and it really has moved things along. I can't wait to find out more about the origins of the Evangelions and what Seele is really planning. Overall, it has solidified my interest in the series.

One of the things I thought was interesting was how there seem to be a lot of superlong episode names in the English version. I personally think the episode names should have stayed the same. I also would have prefered more episodes on this DVD. Only three, why? They can fit five without any trouble.

On the whole, while the DVD itself has some flaws, the episodes were awesome. I haven't seen all of Eva and that sets me apart from most anime fans, but I really want to see the rest.

Platinum Collection 4.......2004-12-30

Platinum Collection 4 only contains 3 episodes. 15, 16 and 17. This strike me as odd since 01 and 02 contain 5 episodes each. 04 contained 4 episodes. It seems to me that there is no rime or reason to this box set. Just a another way to command more money from my wallet. However the 5.1 sound quality is excellent.
