An imaginative mixture of adventure, charm, and emotional warmth made Cardcaptor Sakura a big hit in both Japan and America. In contrast to the one-note and often bratty girls in American animation, ten-year-old Sakura Kinomoto is a good-natured but never saccharine character who learns and grows from her magical experiences. A cheerful 4th grader, she lives with her older brother Toya and her widowed father, a professor of archeology. Sakura dislikes math and Toya's teasing, and nurtures a crush on his friend Yukito. When she opens a mysterious book in her father's study, glowing forms fly into the night. Kero, the winged, toy-like creature from the book's cover, explains that she has released the magical cards created by the sorcerer, Clow Reed. Despite her protests, Kero insists that Sakura must become a Cardcaptor and retrieve them before they work mischief on the world. As she pursues various Cards, Sakura's best friend Tomoyo videotapes her adventures. Shaoran Li, a student from Hong Kong related to Clow Reed, initially challenges Sakura's right to the Cards. As they move from reluctant allies to friends, the relationship is complicated by Shaoran's loudmouth cousin Meilin. Toya, who "sees things other people can't," keeps a watchful eye the magical goings-on.

Sakura wins increasingly powerful Cards, but is haunted by a recurring dream in which she battles an unseen foe atop Tokyo Tower. Meilin returns to Hong Kong, allowing the partnership between Sakura and Shaoran develop smoothly. When Sakura captures the last Card, she faces the confrontation she saw in her dreams. Losing this battle would have dire consequences. But Sakura proves herself worthy to become the new master of the Cards: the timid girl of the first episodes has discovered reserves of inner strength she didn't know she possessed. The arrival of Eriol, who is somehow linked to Clow Reed, produces new troubles for Sakura and her friends, just as Shaoran is coming to grips with the awkward realization that he likes Sakura. The interplay of personal moments and the increasingly ominous plot keeps this extremely popular "magical girl" series moving smoothly through the two and half seasons included in this collection. (Note: this series is rated "13 and Older," but appropriate for viewers three years younger. The popular Cardcaptors series heavily edits this original series for a much younger audience.) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Best Anime.......2007-01-12

This is one of the Best Anime I have ever seen. It is the second half of this series and it ened well. It left me wanting more. I enjoyed it very much and advise anyone who is looking for a cute and lovable show to buy this immediately.

3 out of 5 stars card captures.......2006-10-06

it is a good sieries as long as you are willing to read while you whatch which i believe dewfeats the point of having the book in the first place if the dvd is going to contain them both. It is about a place that is unnaturally over friendly most poeple in this day age would be weary of such poeple and their hidden agenda. but it has an interesting concept on magic which is refreshing from the usal power wilders. the only reseaon that I returned mine was because it was Japanese Language and english subtitles and as i said earlier the book is for reading and the dvd as far as i am conserned is for whatch plus the extras which all ways helps. this also gose for the the other box set as well

4 out of 5 stars Adorable anime, missing that extra something.......2006-07-19

Card captor Sakura is an adorable anime that, while meant for small children and tweens, still has enough appeal to keep the attention of older audiences. It is a sugary-sweet, beautifully animated cartoon that is neithr shallow and stereotyped nor incredibly complex. Its a wonderful family show that even boys can watch without feeling too squeamish at the sheer girliness of it all.

Our heroine, Sakura, is a cheerful and energetic girl who is not too sweet and not too tough. She is a normal girl, respectful, kind and loving. Her father is a professor who treats her with respect, calling her Sakura-san and loves her dearly. But my favorite would have to be her brother, who teases her mercilessly and with whom we see Sakura's darker side appear. ^^ I get plenty of amusement out of his 'I can torment her but I'll be damned if anyone else does' philosophy becauuse my own brother and sister (21 and 8 respectively) act exaclty the same as they do.

For those who may be worried about the boy's/girl's love side of the anime, it is considerably toned down and hardly noticeable. Tomoya, Sakura's best friend, is obsessed with Sakura the way one might obsess over a favorite celebrity. Syaoran may seem to have a crush on Yukito, but it explained later on why he blushes, and its not love. Finally, Yukito and Kouya are close friends, and their relationship can be interpreted however one likes. Even the teacher-student relationship is barely there. My 8 year-old-sister watched the series and never had a confusing moment, or even picked up on these little things.

One of the nice things about the series is the way they dropped the magical girl pose and trademark line, popularised by Sailor Moon, in an attempt to make it more realistic. Sakura's outfits change from show to show, all made for her by Tomoya. However, this also causes some of the outifts to seem thrown together and rushed, and as often as not she fights in her school outfit, so it ultimately doesn't make the big of a difference. And the show follows the typical 'monster of the day' (or card, as it were) schedule. Every show starts fine, then something goes wrong, Sakura catches a card, all is resolved.

I found the series lacking in that extra element that makes it enough for adults to watch. I watched it for my sister and enjoyed it, but if wasn't quite...fulfilling, so to speak. The characters are almost stereotypes in thier perfection; none of them have any flaws to speak of. They are never petty or mean, they never fight, never argue, no one is selfish, everyone clamoring to help out. After a while it grates on your nerves and you want something besides perfection. One of the greatest appeal that Sailor Moon had for me was the way the characters were real and truly acted like highschool girls; sometimes selfish, sometimes bickering, but always there for you when you need them, growing gradually closer as the series progressed. And Usagi herself, watching her mature and grow was a pleasure.

Changing outfits do not, unfortunately make up for monotony of character personality thought it does for the monotony of henshin scenes. And even Sakura has her lines that she repeats, does the same moves, etc. Its a little over-rated, actually.

All in all, its a lovely series that is neither too short nor long, and has a nice does of romance, magic and action. Its filled with quirky characters like the infamous Keroberos, gaurdian of the seal, and has plenty of slapstick humor for those giggles. Its not a title to look over, and a great way to start watching anime, containing none of the objectionable things most anime have. A great CLAMP series, without lots of pretty eye-candy and nothing too serious for little kids to handle. Not a title to look over.

sorra nice to meet you good to see you matte!

anyways! I don't have this yet but I'm saving up for both the clow book and the sakura book,

so this is really just a reveiw of the series and not the box set ^^;

I watched all 70 episodes subbed via torrent, even though it had lack of Quality and the ocasinal having to move the mouse to avoid the screensaver I loved it! even though it was illeagle!(I would have watched it raw if I knew more Japanese)

the story is about young 8 year old Sakura Kinomoto who one day heard a strange sound coming from her basement/dads study.
"burgerlers?" was the thought that went thoure her mind.
she found a book that her dad said nobody could open, the cover read "the clow". she could open the book and instead of finding pages with words, she found a case holding a deck of cards, she picked up the first card and struggled to read the English wrighting, "th-th" she read outlout as wind surrounded her feet "th-th-the wi- the windy" then wind went everywhere and scattered the cards all around tomoeda(where she lives)

now kero-chan(I love calling him that^^) gives her the responsibillity to seal all of the cards befire the tradegy happens(spoilers if I told you what it is)

the seiries has everything you could ask for! a girl fighting magic with magic, A BOY fighting magic with magic, Kero-chan! awsome music! amazeing Art and Quality! a girl who finds fun recording Sakura do things that are susspossed to be a secret!
yaoi, false yaoi! 70 episodes! love between a girl and a boy,
gaurdians! mind controll(only like 5 or 8 episodes have it but its still there), a brainwashed girl useing a sword to kill 8-year olds!, kero-chan in his true form(awsome), and everything else!

I wan't to give it a extra star for every clow card!(that 52 if you don't know)

5 out of 5 stars VERY CUTE!!!!.......2006-08-29

I started out watching the Engilsh dubs but when I got the second movei it was the japanese voices. So, I wanted all the episides and I purchased the boxed set. I LOVE the japanese voices and episodes MUCH better then the dubs. The voice of Tomoyo and Sakura was SOOOOO CUTE!!!!! In fatc I'm learning japanese. Here's what these episodes are about.
1.Sakura and the Magic Book:
Here is when we geta look see at Sakura's life and how she first opened the Clow book. It reveals about how Sakura lives with her father and big brother. But Sakura's mother passed away when Sakura was only three years old. Sakura is a cheerful 10-year-old girl. Her best friend is Tomoyo Daidouji. Tomoyo is the daughter of the owner of a big toy company. She the richest kid in their town. Sakura after school finds the Clow book in her dad's basment. She has a little bit of magical powers because she was able to use the WINDY spell without knowing what she was doing and blew away all the rest of the Clow Cards. Keroberos the beast of the seal who guards the Clow Cards tells Sakura she must now capture these dangeros cards who each have a power or there own. Sakura was able to captur the FLY card. But this is only the beginning.

2: Sakura and her Wonderful Friend
Sakura didn't want any of her friends to know about her having magical power, she didn't want to in danger them. But Tomoyo has a hobbie of filming. She filmed Sakura flying on her stafff the night before. Keroberos was in the flim as well. Sakura had no choice but to tell Tomoyo she had magical powers. Tomoyo is very happy because she thinks its awesome. But she also wants her and Sakura to doa Trademark pose! The night when they go to capture the SHADOW card Tomoyo came and it reveals that her family has 4 woman bodyguards! She had a huge van with all of Sakura's "Battle Costumes". Tomoyo says when Sakura goes to capture a Clow card she must wear the battle costumes that Tomoyo made herself. She even has matching collars for Kero. Tomoyo also films Sakura captur the SHADOW card. She turns on all the lights in the school so that Sakura can capture the card. But the next day Sakura goes to thank Tomoyo, she sees Tomoyo watching the movie she filmed last night of Sakura.

3: Sakura's Heart Racing First Date
Sakura gets to go on a date with Yukito. Tomoyo and Kero go to spy and film it. But a problem hits. The WATERY card is on the loose. Sakura has only SHADOW, FLY and WINDY. None of them are no match for the water card. Thanks to Yukito Sakura figured out what to do. She lead the water card in the freezer and froze it!

4: Sakura is doing house cleaning, but she finds a Clow Card. Without thinking she forgot to write her name on it and it's on the loose in her own house. Another comes as well. WOOD and RAIN create a rain forest in Sakura's house. Sakura though was able to capture them. This one isn't as good as other ones though.
I still LOVE Cardcaptor Sakura though.
My favorite people are Sakura and Tomoyo. It is VERY cute!
Do buy it
And it's my FAVORITE animie.
I like Kimba the white lion but I like this a whole lot better.

4 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT MY FAULT .......2006-01-07

Sakura Kinomoto, a 10 year old elementary school student, has been having some strange dreams of a caped magical girl and what looks like a plush lion doll with wings. What a surprise when she finds out she's been dreaming of her own future! Sakura has lived with her father and harassing older brother since her mother passed away. Alone at home one night, Sakura begins to hear some strange noises coming from her dad's basement library. Getting some strange psychic emanations from a book called "The Clow", she opens it and reads the words "Windy", upon which a ton of cards contained in the book fly out into the night. And what's more, the lion plushy emerges from its empty pages! His name is Kero and it was his duty to contain the Clow Cards, living cards whose power is so great that if left to their own ends, they might destroy the world. He enlists Sakura through guilt and shame, to recapture the Cards, using her newly awakened magical powers. She will also be aided by Tomoya, her best friend, who is her "Q", supplying Sakura with costumes and technological gadgets. She also is a bit of a camera otaku and takes it upon herself to videotape all of Sakura's exploits. In a bit of a disturbing touch, Sakura has a crush on her older brother's high school classmate, Yukito, even though nothing legal can ever come of it.

The first thing that you notice about Cardcaptor Sakura is that it is beautifully animated. There is not even ONE shot of a static character with a moving background on this first volume. Something is always moving, whether its Sakura's hair or the wings on her staff. It gives a realistic feel to it that is missing from most anime. I also liked the soundtrack, which combines symphonic music with pop flourishes. As for the characters, once you get adjusted to their annoying little girl voices, they are quite funny. Sakura is quite admirable in that while showing some fear, when it comes to the business of trapping the Clow Cards, she shows exceeding bravery. Kero threatens to steal the show with his Osakan accent and gung-ho spirit which get most of the laughs. All of the male characters show a tendency towards castrati except for Sakura's brother who shows a little more masculinity. What I don't like about the show so far is its episodic nature. Unless it picks up a stronger story arc, it could get trapped into the "monster of the week" circle. But I enjoyed this first volume, and knowing this show by reputation, I expect it to evolve.

Just a few extras here: Character info on Sakura, a non-credit opening for the Japanese version and for the lame WB bastardization of this great show. I would also recommend the anime and manga series Ultramaniac.

5 out of 5 stars "I'm now called Cardcaptor Sakura!".......2004-06-08

I LUV this volume, even though Shoaron isnt in here, it will show you how it all started and Sakura even dating with her own crush!

Ep.1 Sakura and the Mysterious Magical Book
When Sakura comes home from school, she figures out that her brother and her Dad wont be home for a while. When she heard a weird sound in her basement, she looked down there and no one was there untill she found a book. She called out the "Windy" card and scatered all the 51 cards! Keroberoes tells her she needs to capture them all back to save the world from Chaos.
CARD USED: WINDY
CAPTURED: FLY

Ep.2 Sakura's Wonderful Friend
I really like this one about her best friend Tomoyo. Shes a great friend and you wished you had her as your friend!
When Sakura relizes that desks are piled up on each other for some strange reason and Kero calls it as being a Clow Card. One thing for sure, she cant do it alone until Tomoyo is with her! But can Sakura tell her about Cardcaptoring? All the clothes and styles that Sakuras and even Kero recieves. Everybodys shadows start to become stolen when it has to have a weakness. Light!
CARD USED: WINDY + FLY
CAPTURED: SHADOW

Ep.3 Sakuras Heart Racing First Date
O.M.G! It shows Yukito with Sakura going out on a date! Its so Kawaii! They go to the aquarium out on their date. Yukito even waited at the park earlier so he wont be late for their date! But, before they went on the date, some strange whirlpool was at the aquarium when Sakura went on the field trip with her classmates. Sakura needs to figure how she needs to stop it.
CARD USED: NONE (USED AN AQUARIUM FREEZER)

Ep.4 Sakuras Tiring Day
The title gives you an idea. Its because Sakura has to do the chores today when Touya and her Dad is out. Sorry Kero, you will have to help Sakura with it to. Some parts just make me laugh out loud. Sakura found two Clow Cards! But when the phone rang, she didnt have time to sign her name! Thats when things started to become a disaster.
CARD USED: WATERY
CAPTURED: RAIN + WOOD

IM TELLING YOU ITS NOT WASTE OF MONEY!! MAKE SURE YOU GET THE MOVIES AND OTHER VOLUMES!

5 out of 5 stars Any Anime Fan Ought to try at least One Volume.......2004-06-06

Before anything else, a word on the content of the disc: "Cardcaptor Sakura" is a subject of much passion among anime fans, because of the existance of "Cardcaptors". I will refrain from trying to assess and pass judgement on that series here (there are others who do, both in these reviews and on websites, neither of which are hard to find if you want opinions); suffice to say that although CardCaptors is derived from Cardcaptor Sakura, it is not the same program. This disc ("The Clow") is presented completely uncut and unedited, with only the Japanese language track and optional English subtitles. (Hint: the subtitles are hidden under the Extras menu, and are turned off by default.)

Now, the review proper. I like Mr. Solomon's characterization of the series as "sweet but never sacchrine", for this is really the heart of the matter. Many anime fans who consider themselves "mature" (or for that matter, if they are male) may be turned off by the focus on elaborate costumes, the relentlessly pink cover, and the fact that most of the cast in this series consists of ten-year-old girls.

But, speaking as both a male and someone who watches "mature" anime (Cowboy BeBop, Evangelion, Haibane Renmei come to mind), I implore people who might think these things to stop and reconsider. Despite an outward appearance that may be called "childish", "Sakura" in fact contains a strong and interesting story with strong and interesting characters. Sakura herself manages to be an engaging heroine, while still seeming realstic in her tussles with her own day-to-day affairs.

Now, granted, in the world of "Sakura", no plot line (especially on this first disc) ever goes completely beyond the ability of the characters to ensure a happy ending. But at the same time, the anime (the scripts for which were supervised by Ookawa Nanase, the writer of the original manga series) never fails to create tension and suspense even as you're assuring yourself that this show would not let anything truly terrible happen to its inhabitants.

There's even reason for those who have faithfully read the "Cardcaptor Sakura" manga to check out this anime--although the basic plot is the same, the actual execution is quite different in both forms. Cards Sakura catches in the manga appear in different orders and are conquered in different ways, and the anime also involves a number of Cards that don't appear in the manga at all.

The animation is crisp and bright, and the voice actors do an excellent job all around. But above all, it's next to impossible to watch this series and not feel good. The energy and upbeat personality of the series comes through everywhere, and is thoroughly infectious. Not the simple or even shallow show it may seem at first, Sakura can be enjoyed by anyone of any age, and all fans of anime (and of fun cartoons and good storytelling, for that matter) owe it to themselves to give this series a chance.

~

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Video!.......2004-04-07

I've just relized that they changed alot of things in CC. They changed the dialouge into a dorkier way, when Sakura releases her key or card it always ryhmes and sounds stupid, in the end of season 2, Li just said that he goes back to Hong Kong and Li doesn't even give the teddy bear to Sakura! The love is cut out and etc. Perfer getting CCS.

This story is about an energetic, 10 year old girl named Sakura Kinomoto who is great in baton class and is great in cheerleading. Sakura comes home and heard a noice in her Dad's libary downstairs in the basement. She found a book full with mysterious and wonderous cards. She picked up the first card called the Windy and said it in a clear voice as the cards scatter! Ceroberos or Kero told she has to capture them back with a Key called the key of Clow. Despite her getting into this, Sakura Kinomoto is now the Cardcaptor!

These are one of the best animes that I've seen. If Nelvana just kept everything just like Cardcaptor Sakura, made a way better opening song, and gave better actors, I would of probably liked it and buy both Cardcaptors and Cardcaptor Sakura.
