5 out of 5 stars Action wise a lot better than Cooler's Revenge........2007-03-20

The Return of Cooler is actually one of the better DBZ movies as far as action is concerned. Cooler survives his last encounter with Goku and is recreated as a robot. He attempts to conquer New Namek and Goku and gang rushes to stop him. The action starts right away. Piccolo gets a good amount of fight time. The stand out battle is definetly when Goku battles Cooler with Vegetas help. The plots in the DBZ movies are lackluster at best but its the action why people watch this and it does deliver. The only thing this movie is missing is a good soundtrack, like Cooler's Revenge or Bardock. Anyway this is still a very good movie. I wont go into the continuity holes of this one. Anyone who's a fan of DBZ will right away notice the timeline error in this one. In any case it still wont heart to add this to your collection. This is worth a watch even if your not a fan.

5 out of 5 stars As far as Dragon Ball Z movies goes, this one is on top.......2006-10-13

The Return Of Cooler (1991.) The sixth Dragon Ball Z movie.

INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.

OVERVIEW:
Dragon Ball Z Movie Six, The Return Of Cooler, was released in Japan on March 7, 1992. The movie was first released in America on August 13, 2002. It is the sixth of the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies. The original Japanese title translates to something like "Clash! Ten Billion Powerful Warriors!"

THE STORY:
Goku has defeated Cooler (as chronicled in the previous movie, Cooler's Revenge.) Or so he thought. Just when Cooler was about to die, his body fused with a "living planet" called the Big Gete Star which was in the vicinity. As such, Cooler gained control of this satellite. By absorbing the raw materials from planets and such, he can create an endless supply of sentry robots and metallic clones of himself. The next planet he plans to use the resources from is New Namek. As such, Goku and his friends take a Capsule Corporation ship to New Namek to help in the struggle against the new evil. Unfortunately, they may have gotten in over their heads this time.

REVIEW OF STORY:
The Dragon Ball Z movies are hit and miss. No fan will deny it. However, the sixth movie is one of the true jewels of the bunch. The action sequences are absolutely spectacular, and the animation shines through and through. It's definitely notable for having one of the more unique plots of the movies. Most of the Dragon Ball Z movies have a rather generic "Goku's friends get beat up so Goku gets mad, kills all the villain's henchmen, and kills the villain with a Genki Dama/Spirit Bomb" plot. Not this time around. Rather, our heroes are sent on a mission to eliminate a villain with the ability to create an endless army. And, at long last, Vegeta finally appears in a movie! Took them long enough to put him in one! I'm not exactly sure why the hell Oolong and Yajirobe were brought along for the mission, but they do result in some of the funnier scenes in the movie. Their comic relief nicely balances things out, resulting in one of the finest movies of the series. If I had to pick my favorite Dragon Ball Z movie, it would be a tough call, but this would be one of the likely candidates.

OFFICIAL?
I don't consider any of the movies official to the Dragon Ball Z storyline, since Akira Toriyama himself didn't create them, not to mention the fact they don't usually fit into the storyline. This is no exception. The movie definitely takes place after the first Cooler movie, already making its place in the timeline questionable. It doesn't seem to fit properly into the standard series timeline, though it is possible this and its predecessor film DID take place in the Future Trunks alternate future timeline. That would be my best guess on this one. But as for happening in the real, normal timeline, I consider it unofficial.

REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Some more recent DVDs have character profiles, though these are lacking and could have been written better. Why couldn't get get interviews with cast and crew, or trivia/facts, something like that? FUNimation has a lot of room to improve on the DVDs.

THE DUBBED VERSION:
Lots of people tend to bash FUNimation's dub of the Dragon Ball Z series? Why? It's inaccurate and sometimes just plain stupid. They can do good dubbed versions for plenty of other animes, such as Full Metal Alchemist, but every time they've tried dubbing Toriyama's classic, they butcher it to hell. The nu metal they put in as background music only further defiles the original series. Stick with the uncut subbed track.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a good package. An excellent Dragon Ball Z movie, but FUNimation still needs to work on their DVDs, and learn how to make a decent dubbed version of the show. But the original uncut Japanese subtitled version is here, so that makes up for a lot of the little issues. It's tough to recommend the Dragon Ball Z movies due to their non-canon nature and the fact that they are often hit and miss, but this is one of the best. If you're only going to buy one or a few of the movies, this would be a fine choice (although you may want to see the first Cooler film first to get the whole story.)

EDITION NOTES:
Two versions of this were released: Edited and Uncut. Obviously, buy uncut. The DVD isn't as readily available as it once was, but is still fairly easy to find. Used stores that buy anime DVDs, online and in-person, should have it.

5 out of 5 stars A little better then the first Cooler movie.......2005-07-01

The gang decideds to take a trip to the planet Namek little did they know the Nameks were all taken as prisoners by the evil brother of Frieza [yes thats right Cooler is back] when Goku was fighting cooler that fight was pretty good they DBZ was going back to the action that was very fast meanwhile Krillen, Gohan, & Piccolo were battling three big robots machines. Vegeta arrives later on to fight by Goku's side weather he like's it or not. It turn out their are over hundereds of cyborgs that looks like Cooler how did they survive well go see it.

3 out of 5 stars ok........2005-05-19

First of all I am not a kid. Okay lets start with the review.

1. This movie has excellent fighting scenes

2. This movie has ALOT of those crappy scenes where they are trying to be "funny" and that really ruins the movie :|

3. This movie has no music, it has those default DBZ tunes, but it has no soundtrack from rock bands like the broly movie does or the other movies.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Overall: This movie is ok, I liked it but it wasnt the best, its just ok. what really gives this movie a downside is all those corny scenes and the fact that it has no good music.

but its worth buying. (belive me this is not the type of DBZ movie you'll want to watch with a friend. alot of the scenes are corny)

4 out of 5 stars Cool Movie!!!.......2004-02-08

No offense, but this movie could've turned out more better if they were to have Trunks on there. But overall, it was a good movie. What I liked the most is Goku vs. Meta-Cooler. I mean, talk about intense battling. What was dumb enough is Vegeta getting his ass kicked even as a super saiyan, he still sucks! But like I said, "Cool movie, but it could have been better!"

4 out of 5 stars Return of Cooler clasic combat.......2003-05-31

I would have to say that this movie is better than Cooler's Revenge. If you liked Cooler's Revenge than definently get this one. It has all the clasic combat you love about DragonballZ and twists and turns all over the place. One plus is that you get to see New Namek(You may not like it at the begining but after they clean up it looks better). And also you get to see Vegeta's full Super Saiyan abilities. I truly think this deserves all four out of five stars the producers really outdid themselves.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Bad (English Dub Version).......2002-11-29

I love the dragonball Z series and was warned that the movies weren't that great, but I decided to check this one out since Vegeta was in it.

This movie gets some credit for the musical score and fight scenes which were both pretty cool. And finally it gets an extra point for Goku and Vegeta working together, with some great dialog between them.

Goku- It was nice knowing you Vegeta
Vegeta- Oh Shut Up

However, the plot was completely ridiculous. Now that I think about it, it barely had a plot. Hey it was great that vegeta was in the movie, but it never explained how he just happened to appear on the planet.
Yeah sure they wanted Cooler to seem like an extremely invincible villian. But I've never seen Vegeta and Goku so out of it from fighting any villian on the series, even villians that had to be ten times stronger than Cooler.
This was one giant plot hole, didn't fit into the series at all. I am guessing it happened somewhere after Trunks first appeared but before the Androids came (otherwise Trunks would have been there, and if it was before Vegeta wouldn't be a super saiyan) but I am absolutely sure no one found out Vegeta was a super saiyan until the Android Saga. But here he was, showing it off, and Goku didn't even act shocked.

Cooler did not come close to his brother Frieza that's for sure.
If I was asked to explain the plot of this movie I wouldn't know where to begin.

Well I'll admit the movie was so dumb that it actually made me laugh. Maybe I should give it an extra point for that.

5 out of 5 stars Better than COOLER'S REVENGE!.......2002-09-25

Compared to the it's sister video, COOLER'S REVENGE, THE RETURN OF COOLER is soooo much better. This video is the first, of those I own, that has Vegeta involved. When Vegeta figures he can't fight Cooler on his own, Goku says they must work together. Of course, Vegeta says stay out of his way, but he doesn't do ANYTHING to stop Goku from helping him! I was impressed and shocked. In COOLER'S REVENGE, Goku doesn't turn Super Saiyan until the end - bummer-, but in THE RETURN OF COOLER, just when you think Vegeta and Goku couldn't be their super selves anymore, they prove you wrong! I recommend for anyone who either has or has not seen COOLER'S REVENGE to get this video. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars "Well worth watching...".......2002-08-20

The sixth DBZ movie, "The Return of Cooler" was released in Japan under the title "Clash!! The 10 Billion Power Warriors". And we are rewarded greatly because Vegeta finally appears in a movie, and with Goku's help he [beats up] Meta-Cooler... I really like this movie and I thought FUNimation did a really good job on it. The movie starts off showing the Big Gete Star wrapping itself around Namek. Sensing the peril of his people, Dende sends Goku and his friends to Namek to check it out. They find that the Nameks have been enslaved by a bunch of robots, and behind the robots is an old enemy...Cooler! He has created a new metal body for himself, which is on the front cover, and it is known as Meta-Cooler. Although there is no music from bands like Disturbed or Drowning Pool, the soundtrack is cool and does go well with the movie. I loved the battle between Meta-Cooler and S.S. Goku, it was just cool, and I thought it was cool when Cooler was about to punch Vegeta and Goku saw it and stopped him. The fights between the Z-fighters and the battle droids were cool, and the droids looked really awesome. The cover is designed really well, and it stays true to it's original Japanese cover, which I really think should have been done with "Cooler's Revenge". I wonder how the cover art to movie 7 will look. Well, we'll just have to wait and see. I've only seen the edited version, but I bet the uncut is better, everyone is saying that it is, so I'll have to check that one out, but that'll have to be on DVD. I thought the last fight scene with Goku and the giant, damaged Meta-Cooler was pretty cool, but sort of weird. If you buy this movie and hold it under light, you'll notice that the lighter shadowed parts on Meta-Cooler will disappear, so they must have done something to the cover to make it do that, it's pretty clever. The scene where Cooler tries to hit Goku and misses was really clever, because it is revealed that Meta-Cooler knows a certain attack that we thought only Goku could perform. Meta-Cooler's voice was great, it sounded just like Cooler in "Cooler's Revenge" only echoed like a robot's voice, which is a good thing considering that's what he is. The voices are played by the voice actors from the series once again, and finally they didn't re-use the plot of Piccolo suddenly arriving to save Gohan. It's 45 minutes of intense action and very clever dialogue and activity, so I definitely suggest you pick up "The Return of Cooler" today!

3 out of 5 stars "Cooler's Revenge was better...".......2002-08-19

I won't lie to you, this is indeed a good DBZ movie, but Cooler's Revenge was much better and had all that hard rock music in it. There is no Disturbed or Drowning Pool to be heard in this, all the music is composed, no words. Meta-Cooler sounded really great, though, his voice echoed slightly, like any robot's voice should. This one has Super Saiyans, and is the first movie in which Vegeta appears. Of course, you wonder how he knew where to find Cooler and Goku, he just kind of shows up. Vegeta has a cool voice, sounds very serious, and ready to punch Meta-Cooler's head off, but he doesn't succeed in doing so, not without Goku's help. The ending is good, but I don't know if it was necessary for there to be a giant Meta-Cooler towards the end, it's kind of weird. DBZ Return of Cooler is one you should get, but don't expect fusions or Gotenks or anything, it's still too early for that.
