Written by Mamoru Oshii (the director of the cult favorite Ghost in the Shell) and directed by Hiroyuki Okiura (a key animator on Akira), Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade offers a violent but compelling vision in animation. The story is set in a fictionalized version of the recent past, when a repressive Japanese government is battling the Sect, a violent revolutionary organization that uses adolescent girls they call "Red Riding Hoods" as couriers. During a raid, Capitol Police Constable Kazuki Fuse (pronounced "foo-seh," voice by Michael Dobson) balks at killing Nanami Agawa (Maggie Blue O'Hare), one of the Red Riding Hoods. She commits suicide with a powerful bomb. While Fuse undergoes retraining, he meets Nanami's older sister, Kei (Moneca Stori), and initiates an odd romance. Soon both characters are caught in a web of plots and counterplots that center on the possibility that Fuse may be a "wolf," a member of a secret cabal within the Capitol Police.
Jin-Roh is drawn in a comic book style that recalls the work of the popular graphic novelist and film designer Jean "Moebius" Giraud; Okiura's skillful cutting and striking imagery transcend the limited animation. Although anime continues to grow in popularity in America, it's rare for a Japanese feature to receive even a limited theatrical release, as this one did: a dark, brooding film of exceptional power, Jin-Roh deserves to be seen by a large audience.
Suitable for ages 18 and up: considerable violence, profanity, and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Stunning. Very, Very Good........2007-03-31
This movie is one of the most emotionally powerful anime films I have seen in a long time. It reminded me of the film: swing kids, or George Orwell's book, 1984. I'm not sure if the author of the film intended it this way, but there is a use of the symbol of "red riding hood" that I didn't catch while I watched the film. In the film, the main character becomes friends with a girl who was in a terrorist group called: "the red riding hoods". In the fable, Red Riding Hood doesn't realize the danger she is in when she goes into the house that has the disguized, lethal wolf in it.
While we watch the film, Jin-Roh, we as members of the audience are like red riding hood. Not all of the people who look good to the audience are hero types and not all of the people who seem bad are bad guys. The characters in the film fall in and out of a lot of emotional traps and lethal traps as the story goes on. In the fable, little red riding hood doesn't realize that she is entering a house with the deadly wolf in it. When we watch the film, we are also like innocent and vulnerable red riding hood-we don't know the eerie and dark experiences that will happen to us as we watch the film.
Great Anime.......2007-03-13
Unlike most anime films, this one is not sci-fi nor fantasy. It's a regular drama/thriller but animated. I haven't given it the full 5 stars because the plot is somewhat complicated and the movie doesn't really flow. But there are several scenes that take your breath away, plus the surprising ending which make it worth while.
Enjoy!
Jin Roh's View of Human Nature.......2007-02-24
It has been broadcast by Tampa Bay Brighthouse Network recently, and it is a very involving movie. Animation is first-rate, as is backgrounds, characterization, etc. Not for the sqeamish, it is a realistic, pragmatic look into the nature of the human beast. Most are
like flocks of birds, some are like gazelles-and some of us are wolves.
You can try to become one of the others-but your real nature always comes
out, whether or not you want it to.
In light of recent political problems, it is a gritty look at a near-alternative future, as if the Peace Treaty Riots never stopped-nor did
the police units against them. And there's always a rogue unit out to
save it's own life at any cost.
I highly recommend this movie-in any of it's versions.
BORING.......2007-01-29
This movie is extremely boring, 2 stars because the animation is good. If you are looking for action or something intense this is not it.
Literature in motion.......2006-12-30
This is a good DVD. I find it to be different from other anime in the fact that it has depth to it's characters. There's only one way I can describe it and that's "Literature in Motion" rather than the infamous "Art in Motion."

Description
10 years have passed since war changed the face of Japan, a Japan which now burns with the fire of civil unrest. Fueled by rampant crime and poverty, a well armed anti-government group has risen amongst the people; with the intent of stopping the government through its terrorist plots. To combat this group, an elite group of heavily-armored soldiers was formed, trained like dogs, these men were to combat the growing unrest with extreme and severe prejudice; these men were the Capitol Police. However, when Constable Fuse, a member of the Capitol Police hesitates to kill a young courier, he is forced to face his own humanity and ultimately decide - is it better to live as a chained dog? Or die a free man? From Famed director Mamoru Oshii. Genre: Drama/Sci-Fi.

An absolute Classic - 5 Stars.......2007-03-26
I've little to add to the other reviews. This is not only a superb anime, but a classic. The english voice-acting and the subtitles are often quite different as it seems great care was taken to make the english dub match the mouth-movements. I found it interesting to watch the dub with the subtitles running to try to catch every bit of information.
