VanDamme's Best.......2007-04-03
I have been waiting for a long time for this movie to come out on DVD. I think it is VanDamme's best! Tung-Po is the best villian in all of his movies. He has made many sleepers but this is one not to miss. Great man made action!
Surprisingly good because it keeps things simple; a "B-".......2007-02-19
I just watched this again recently and was actually quite glad I did because it was better than I remembered it being. The movie actually succeeds *because* of its simple plot. Helping the film also is the cheesy (but still cool) 80's music, one mean villain in Tong Po (who is, for a film like this, quite masterfully characterized), and a few moments of true tension and emotion. My knocks against the film - Xian Chow has one too many moments of silliness and the story tries to do too much toward the end in terms of attempting to raise the stakes; still, 'Kickboxer' is worth a look as a Saturday afternoon action flick when you consider that it has relatively humble intentions and goes out and achieves it in a humble way.
Van Dumb.......2007-02-02
I thought this movie sucked for one reason: It's called kickboxer but, lo and behold, there's no kickboxing in it!!!! I practice martial arts and can say with certainty that Jean Claude was doing a hybrid of Shotokan karate (which he has a black belt in in real life), hapkido or another korean style that uses high flashy kicks, and some form of tai chi he was using while doing all the slow-movement scenes. The only muay Thai done in the movie was done by Tong Po, Van Damme was training with a muay Thai teacher but must have been watching karate tapes at night in his hut or not paying much attention in his lessons. As with his other movies, his Eurotrash accent and horrific acting make this film almost painful to watch, and the only good parts in the whole movie were the ones showing that cute Thai chick who was the teacher's niece.
The Rice Warrior.......2007-01-21
I watched this film for the first time since living in Thailand and I have to say that it is plain awful to watch. I loved this movie as a teen and in some respects still like it but it is by no means a quality film.
This is the the story of Kurt Sloan (Van Damme) avenging his brother's brutal loss and subsequent paralysis to Tong Po, the Thai Kickboxing Champion. Sloan enlists the help of Xian to train him to beat Tong Po. In the process Sloan start falling in love with Xian's Niece Mai Lee (translated from Thai means Don't escape). Sloan gets caught up in the Thai underworld and eventually gets to fight Tong Po in the ancient style where the hands are tied in ropes and dipped in glass (this was the actual custom and was not made up for the movie).
This is one of those really awful cookie-cutter plot movies that made lots of money on low budgets because of the popularity of martial arts and exotic places. This is not too be overly critical on the movie here because I understand all that was involved. I just find it funny for a movie about Thailand and Kickboxing that this has little to do with either. When Xian and his niece start the chant Nawk Soo Cow (White Warrior in Thai) they are actually chanting Rice Warrior which is similar but has a different tone. The Thai crowd is chanting correctly obviously. As for the kickboxing nothing really resembles the kickboxing seen in Thailand. Instead it is scripted so that Van Damme can show of his martial arts skills and physique. None of the names in this movie are Thai and neither are any of the actors. I was amazed at the fact that everyone was able to speak English so well and that they called Sloan an American insted of a farang.
the white warrior.......2006-08-19
Kickboxer came out a year after the highly popular "Bloodsport" and like Bloodsport, Kickboxer is no doubt a "Van Damme classic". There are plenty of fights and lots of good training sequences, however the acting suffers - worse than Bloodsport in that department. As for the plot - revenge - go figure. But we don't need good acting and plot to enjoy this movie. Hey, it came to the point a good american martial art movie strives off of bad acting and weak plots so you can focus more on the action. Fortunately, Kickboxer delivers it well. The movie begins with a couple of good fights right away. About 1/2 of the movie is training sequences, but many are enjoyable to watch. The final fight is between the villain, Tong Po (played by Michel Qissi) and Kurt Sloane (Van Damme). Its a rather lenghty fight, about 10 minutes, which is nice. Above all else, they fight with hands wrapped in rope with broken glass glued on, and yes the result is some blood during the fighting. Kickboxer is the only martial art movie I know of that used this "ancient Thai style of fighting" (with the exception of Kickboxer 2 and a small scene in Ring of Fire). I really enjoyed this. I also enjoyed Michel Qissi. He had maybe one line in the movie, but still succeeded in making Tong Po a great villain, who also will return in the sequal. Lastly, we can't forget to mention the Van Damme dance - Napoleon Dynamite would be proud. Also keep an eye out for Ong Soon Han (main villain in both Bloodsport 2 and Dragon:The Bruce Lee Story), who has a short fight against Tong Po about 1/2 way through the movie.

Description
Welcome to Sin City. This town beckons to the tough, the corrupt, the brokenhearted. Some call it dark. Hard-boiled. Then there are those who call it home. Crooked cops. Sexy dames. Desperate vigilantes. Some are seeking revenge. Others lust after redemption. And then there are those hoping for a little of both. A universe of unlikely and reluctant heroes still trying to do the right thing in a city that refuses to care. Their stories -- shocking, suspenseful and searing -- come to the fore in a new motion picture from co-directors Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, and special guest director Quentin Tarantino.

Awesome! One of my top 10 favorite movies!!!.......2006-08-15
I bought this on launch day for the UMD and DVD versions! I bought a copy for my homedawg, DJ Honeybear, and the UMD version for myself! I could not believe the cinematic brilliance of this movie! Truely one of the best cinematic features I've ever seen in my life!
Somebody else said "jawdropping video presentation" or words to that effect, and I would have to agree with that! Clearly an award winner in this department!
Just writing this review and reading the other reviews, is making me want to rewatch it. I also will probably get the DVD special edition of this movie by this Holiday.
Highly recommended!!!

Sinful "City".......2006-07-19
The nights are cloudy, the alleys are dark, the men are dangerous, bars are smoky and femmes are fatale. "Sin City" is a thing of dark, bloody beauty.
It certainly says something if a graphic novel author helps out with a movie... especially if that creator swore he'd never let it be adapted. That is only one of the things that makes "Sin City," the adaptation of Frank Miller's comic, such a fascinating film.
"Sin City" is actually made up of three stories: In the depths of Basin (Sin) City, scarred hulk Marv (Mickey Rourke) sleeps with a beautiful prostitute, Goldie (Jaime King), only to find her dead beside him the next morning. Enraged, he goes on a killing spree to find her murderer, and learns that sinister cannibal Kevin (Elijah Wood) is responsible. But there's a powerful figure behind Kevin, who calls the shots.
Elsewhere in Sin City, Dwight (Clive Owen) does his best to defend Gail (Rosario Dawson) and the other Old Town prostitutes. But when Dwight kills a crooked cop, he has to somehow cover up the crime. And Hartigan (Bruce Willis), a cop with a failing heart, goes out of his job with a bang: He rescues little Nancy Callahan from a child molester who happens to be a senator's son. Hartigan is jailed, and when he gets out, he finds that Nancy (Jessica Alba) has grown into a lasso-twirling stripper. But the senator's son -- nicknamed Yellow Bastard -- is still after her.
"Sin City" is one of those few comic book adaptations that doesn't seem... well, cartoonish. Sure, it's the very image of noir, but the grim tone and grey characters are very real. It's not a movie for the fainthearted, but whoever enjoys the films of Quentin Tarantino (who directed one scene here) will surely be blown away.
Like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," this film is done almost entirely digitally. But unlike "Sky Captain," it has substance as well as style. All the sets and props are done with computers, and nearly everything is in black and white. Here and there we get a splash of colour -- red lipstick and matching dress, Yellow Bastard's face, green eyes.
The contents of three "Sin City" comic books are interwoven here, and Rodriguez is constantly faithful: A lot of these shots could have been lifted straight from the comic's pages. He also preserves the stark, black-and-white style that the graphic novels are known for. You can't get much more faithful than that.
"Sin City" is not quite a "Kill Bill" bloodfest, though -- surprisingly, this brutal movie has a dark sense of chivalry. Each story is about an outcast man defending a woman's honor, safety, or memory, even if he sacrifices himself in the process. "Sin City" wears its heart on its sleeve, even if that sleeve is bloodstained and torn.
Most of the actors do wonderful jobs -- Owen's dark photographer, Rourke's scarred strongman, Stahl's revolting Yellow Bastard, and Alba's surprisingly sweet stripper. Only a few, like Brittany Murphy, have lackluster performances. But perhaps the most memorable performances come from Bruce Willis and Elijah Wood. Willis plays his aging cop role with unusual grace, even when shooting the genitals off Yellow Bastard. And Wood plays Kevin with both creepy evil and spiritual ecstacy. All without saying a word.
"Sin City" is a remarkable, bleak, intense movie -- a halfway point between Tarantino and Raymond Chandler. An outstanding piece of work.
PSP Review - Forget the DVD, get the UMD!!!!.......2005-09-07
Sin City has finally come out on PSP, and my god it doesn't get better than this.
A few words about the movie - This is, without a doubt, a MASTERPIECE of film-making, and definately live's up to the hype surrounding it's release.
Now that's said, let's get onto technical side of the UMD disc.
Video:
Sin City looks absolutley JAW DROPPING on PSP. Consistently sharp, contrasty as hell with solid "BLACK" blacks, no evidence of grain or compression artifacts, and no bleeding whatsoever...it's a SOLID performance from Mirimax/Dimension. The OAR is untouched, keeping it's original 1:85 ratio (with tiny little black bars at the top and bottom). Subtitles are large, displayed in yellow, and easily readable against the image. Overall, this is a faultless presentation.
Video: 5/5
Audio:
The sound on this baby packs quite a punch, and right from the word go you'll be pleasantly surprised. Make sure you crank this up to full volume, as it deserves this experience to be fully appreciated. Overall, a nice job boys.
Audio 4.5/5
Extras:
Now, this is the first UMD disc that i own, to spoil you with more than just your usual trailers. Like the DVD release, we get the gorgeous animated menus aswell as the 8 min "Behind-the-scenes" featurette, giving you a teaser of what we'll expect on the future Director's edition coming out.
Extras: 4/5
Overall this is, without question, the disc to own this season. And for under $20, there's no excuse not to buy. Fantastic Visuals, Excellent Audio, and great extras, this is the benchmark for future UMD releases. Get used to this kinda UMD treatment boys and girls.
Overall 5/5

Noir reinvented.......2005-08-29
If there's anything you knew in advance about "Sin City" (aside from who gets naked -- show a little class dammit) it's that director Robert Rodriquez went as far out of his way as humanly possible to make this film adhere as closely as possible to the visual feel of the comic book source material. Well, I haven't read any of Frank Miller's legendary "Sin City" comics, but having seen the movie, I can't imagine it existing without them. Many people will see similarities between "Sin City" and the work of Quentin Tarantino, both because Robert Rodriquez will probably never break free from this stigma no matter how many kiddie flicks he makes, and more importantly -- gulp -- he actually inviteds QT on board to direct one of the segments, this after he'd torn up his DGA membership card in disgust after they wouldn't allow him to list Frank Miller as a co-director, so as far as integrity goes it's hard to one-up Sir Robert here. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to which segment QT was supposed to be directing ahead of viewing this flick, and it's to the film's credit that it all seems of a piece no matter how the chores were divvied up.
Now, there are a couple of things that are immediately going to weed out a certain part of the older audience (hello Ma!), this being the "artsy" use of black-and-white splashed here and there with purposeful primary colors, and also the integrity of the action sequences. I shouldn't diss the so-called "older" audience, being in my third decade of existence myself, but my parents and everyone else their age have certain prejudices toward a particular kind of modern film, this being the type that has "far fetched" action sequences. Yes, in "Sin City" the characters are able to take a ridiculous amount of bullets and keep on ticking as well as jumping out of windows several stories to the ground without any apparent injuries, but to that I say that there is a reason this kind of thing works in a film like "Sin City" whereas it can easily wear thin in a movie like, say, "The Matrix". Sin City is portrayed as a hopelessly fatalistic backdrop against which the best the characters can hope for is to die with a little bit of dignity. It doesn't really matter that Marv doesn't croak after taking a bullet to the head because you know the dice are gonna roll cold for him sooner or later.Another comparison people may make to Tarantino is to point out that "Sin City" is also an anthology film. I could mention the fact that this is based on three graphic novels featuring different protagonists and leave it at that, but -- at the risk of unduly diminishing the genius of Quentin Tarantino, whose "Pulp Fiction" is undeniably the most influential film of the 90s and a work of art in it's own right -- it should be noted that QT did not, in fact, actually INVENT the anthology film. No, that would be George Romero and Stephen King with "Creepshow" (I'm kidding, of course, but you get my point...).
Aside from the anthology aspect, there is one thing that actually does somewhat resemble "Pulp Fiction": Bruce Willis' character makes an early exit only to return later in the film. It's not the same chronological gimmick that QT utilized but I've said enough as it is.The one aspect that got so much press in the film's pre-release was the unprecedented decision to film the entire movie in front of a green screen. This move not only doesn't come off as a gimmick but you'll find yourself forgetting that "Sin City" isn't absolutely real about five minutes into the movie. Sure, there are numerous improbabilities, as detailed above, but it's the MOVEMENT of the characters, vehicles, weapons, etc. that seem a bit cartoonish; nothing about the actual scenery really does. In essence, "Sin City" sticks to the elements that continue to make noir so compelling: great camerawork, gritty characterizations, and the theme of a hardened soul holding out some kind of remote hope for redemption. Bruce Willis was an absolute no-brainer for this flick: he's spent the last decade perfecting this world-weary gutter saint character, and "Sin City" is arguably his best portrait of this tortured soul archetype yet. Willis, Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke are the three main protagonists, and you'll find yourself rooting for them not through point-of-view bias alone, but because each of these guys completely earns the right to be called a bad ass. In a way I'm glad they saved the fate of Willis' character for last as the whole movie seems to be building to such tragedy.
So, yes, it's unfortunate that so many people will rent this movie sheerly on the recommendation of Mr. Skin, but hopefully "Sin City" will turn more than a few heads on to a new, hightened quality of experimental film-making in the same way that the aforementioned "Pulp Fiction" did a decade ago. Word is that Rodriquez is planning two back-to-back sequels as we speak.
Miller's graphic novels become Rodriguez's film noir epic.......2005-08-07
"Sin City" is a black and white world, except when the blood is being sprayed around and then be prepared for lots of red or white or even yellow. Based on three of the first four "Sin City" graphic novels by Frank Miller ("The Hard Good-Bye," "The Big Fat Kill," and "That Yellow Bastard") and "The Customer Is Always Right" short-story from "Babe Wore Red" that was the test run for this project, this 2005 film sets the standard for what film noir will be in the 21st century and advances the cause of digital filmmaker even more than "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow." That film was pure eye candy, but "Sin City" is much too gritty to be that sweet. You are going to wince at some of what happens in this film and you might even turn away once or twice as the over the top violence hits you in the gut as hard as it hits some of the characters in the side of the head. But chances are you are going to love this movie to death.
Frank Miller's "Sin City" is a world where the heroes can take a whole series of punches as well as deliver them, where justice has nothing to do with either mercy or the cops, and the system is crooked from top down to pretty near the bottom of the barrel. The dames are still worth dying for and some of them might even be goddesses, but others can defend themselves quite well, thank you. This is a world where protecting women is hard-wired into the psyches of guys like John Hartigan (Bruce Willis), Marv (Mickey Rourke), and Dwight (Clive Owen). If you fail to protect a dame, then somebody has to pay and in a way that will make the scum bucket think Hell is heaven when you finally let them go there. This movie is rated R for sustained strong stylized violence, nudity and sexual content including dialogue, but that is an R that is a lot closer to NC-17 than it is to PG-13.
Ang Lee tried to have parts of "The Hulk" look like a comic book, but that meant throwing several frames on the screen at the same time. But with "Sin City" director Robert Rodriguez knows that a comic book panel can be like a frame in a motion picture and visa-versa, so his solution was to embrace Miller's visual style and make him the co-director of the film (and give him a small role as a priest hearing his final confession). The "Sin City" were done largely in black and white, although sometimes white and black, and other times when the strategic addition of a single color as in the red of a woman's lips, the yellow of her hair, or the blue of her eyes. Sometimes the red is a cool looking car.
This is the bloodiest film noir of my experience, so it is a good thing that when there is a lot of blood is it just as likely to appear as bright white or neon yellow as globs of the red stuff. But it is also evokes more bursts of laughter at the audacious violence and the perfectly timed one-liners, most of which will never work uttered in Dirty Harry fashion out of the context of the film. This is film noir in the tradition of Mickey Spillane updated for the Quentin Tarantino generation.
The standout performance in "Sin City" is clearly Mickey Rourke as Marv, who is buried under so much makeup you keep assuring yourself that he is really in there somewhere. In keeping with the formula of the film Marv is both the most violent of the protagonists, giving taking somebody for a ride a whole new meaning, and the funniest, in both word and deed. Willis and Owen are both fine as the other two protagonists, but they are more the strong and silent types, neither as reflective nor as sardonic as Marv. Willis definitely has the world weary act honed down to perfection, but Owen seems a bit too mannered in his detachment in his story line and ends up finishing third in the hero sweepstakes. Elijah Wood as Kevin does not get to speak but still creeps you out as Frodo gone over to the Dark Side. Benicio Del Toro shows some nice comic timing as Jack Rafferty and Michael Madsen has not changed a bit as Bob, while Nick Stahl is scum of two different colors. Rutger Hauer, Powers Booth and Michael Clarke Duncan all take turns playing heavies and it becomes pretty clear Rodriguez could get just about anybody he wanted to do this movie.
Of the women of "Sin City" it is Devon Aoki as Miho who stands out although she never says a word (she does not have to). Jessica Alba's best moments as Nancy are silent, although there is a change in why that is the case as we go through the movie. Rosario Dawson has fun going over the top as Gail, Brittany Murphy goes slumming as Shellie, and Jaime King plays two sides of the same coin as Goldie and Wendy. Alexis Bledel is certainly trying to get as far away from Rory Gilmore as possible by playing Becky, but I am afraid she does not get far in that regard. Then again, if you have read Miller's graphic novels you will be impressed by how Rodriguez has brought the stark black and white images of Becky, Hartigan, the Yellow Bastard and the rest of them to life on the screen. This movie is going to make a ton of money, Miller is going to sell a lot of copies of the new editions of his "Sin City" graphic novels, and hopefully it will not be too long before we get the next cinematic installment, which should have Johnny Depp playing Wallace in the "To Hell and Back" segment.

Description
Take a captivating and compelling road trip through the creative spirit of the American South, a world of churches, prisons, coalmines, truckstops, juke joints, swamps and mountains. Along the way you'll meet musicians including the Handsome Family, Johnny Dowd, 16 Horsepower, and David Johansen, old time banjo player Lee Sexton, and novelist Harry Crews. This film is a collage of stories and testimonies filled with sudden death, sin and redemption... and all the while, a strange Southern Jesus looms in the background.

a mix of poor prisoners and religious folk just like them.......2007-06-12
I was interested in the music, including a familiar banjo tune, but I was almost shocked by the last song in the extra features, which was just Harry Crews talking like I was right back in the movie and he had to explain how the South shaped his own quest to become a great novelist. Some speaking in tongues is very intense, so you might want to see this for more than the music and attempts to tell hard luck stories that most of the songs are about. Talking about hell, or "Participating in my own butchering," as Harry Crews puts it in that special feature, can be fascinating.
How Did David Johansen Get In This Movie ?.......2007-05-15
This is a very beautiful film. Although very staged at times, it still seems slice of life. Me being a 47 year old black man from a city in eastern North Carolina, i didn't see myself here, but i saw what goes on DEEPER off-roads than the comparitively regular off-roads i usually encounter.
i repeat. How did David Johansen get in this movie ?
quality.......2007-01-20
I have to say as a DP for the last twenty years and working on some very well funded projects, this documentary
has so much thought behind it, to make it different, from the tipacle talking head B roll format.
I really respect the film makers ideas to make this a "different type of documentary" and I love the staged segues of the musical pieces. You dont need 2 second edits to make an interesting documentary.
...just a total let down........2007-01-13
honestly, this movie is awful to sit through because of Jim White and his ridiculous, meaningless philosophy of the South. he is an apsolute bore...unless, perhaps, you get a laugh out of it all. there are other reviews here that explain this film's faults in better detail and I needn't repeat them all (you know, paid actor sort of grumblings)...I will say this documentary only shows you one perspective, WHITE'S and he seems like a real silly square to me. there are some nice visuals, I'll admit that, but just drive through Southern states yourself and be spared the dim-witted ramblings of this self-serving "guide" Jim White. oh and some of the music is pretty good, a lot of it just sucks.
Salvation on White Mountain.......2007-01-08
This is a strange move to watch. It's not a documentary, even though it resembles one. Probably the best way to think of "Searching for the Wrong-eyed Jesus" is that what you are watching is one man's visual poem of a (large) region and people. And White's version, which is that of a musician's, is highly selective, jumping from the deep South into Appalachia, with hardly a blink - though these two regions, though similar, also have many differences. White can be annoying in his own way, since many of his musings regarding the South, can sound both pithy and full-of-it at the same time. If you are from the South, it seems pretty darned manipulative, even more so when you realize this film was done for BBC. White, clearly, is pushing buttons for a foreign audience, but he does it with such a clear-eyed sincerity that he's easy to forgive. It's kind of like listening to the Rolling Stones singing "Hand of Fate." You enjoy the song -- it rocks -- but you also know it's a bit hokey. Whatever his sins, White loves the South and its people, so roll with it.
But where does that leave the viewer? Well, it's not the real South with all of its complexities, but to be fair, that would take a series. Still, the parts that White offers up are real enough, and important to him, so I suggest you allow him his idiosyncracies, because he does entertain with some pretty fine music by some excellent folks you may not have even heard of. Cat Power, 16 Horsepower, The Handsome Family, to name a few, along with good story telling by the original literary wild man, Harry Crews. Accompanying many of the songs, are haunting film images that will hang with you. For example, the Handsome Family, singing from the porch of nearly flooded shotgun shack, or David Eugene Edwards (who strikes me as some sort of musical genius), from 16 Horsepower, singing Wayfaring Stranger out in the woods, his hands dancing lightly over his banjo, while his voice sends chills down your spine. Whew. These are real diamonds, and they're not rough.

A chilling, true story of a psychopath created by a mother's destructive love. Ruth Coe is a domineering, manipulative mother whose emotionally dependent son, Kevin, is a violent serial rapist. Their bizarre relationship is marked by overtones of incest and by harsh, dissonant chords of loathing and despair.

Elizabeth Montgomery.......2007-07-03
I purchased this DVD recently. I was pleasantly surprised to find one of Elizabeth Montgomery's films on DVD at all! I enjoyed this movie a lot. Elizabeth Montgomery does a wonderfully evil turn as Ruth Cole, an overbearing mother. Her son is no peach either!! Wonderful to see "Samantha Stevens" doing serious acting as well as her comedic turn on "Bewtiched". I agree with the last reviewer who mentioned "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" as a most wanted title on DVD. Along with "Lizzie Borden" please accept my nomination for "A Case of Rape" as another possible new title from MPI Home Video.
This is great news!.......2007-04-13
Hopefully MPI will continue to release TV Movies that feature our beloved Elizabeth Montgomery. I would love to see "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" next in the line :)

Description
Rebecca De Mornay (THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE) and Don Johnson (PARADISE) scorch the screen in this spine-tingling, seductively sexy thriller. De Mornay stars as a sexy, hothot criminal defense attorney who plays to win -- and usually does. She meets her match when she represents a playboy (Don Johnson) accused of murdering his rich wife. The attractive lawyer, captured by her client's irresistible charm, finds herself caught in his seductive, psychological web of deceit from which there is no legal escape -- and soon fears she may be his next victim. From its first startling plot twist, GUILTY AS SIN is a riveting edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller leading to a sensational climax. Don't miss it!
Customer Reviews:
DON JOHNSON DELIVERS.......2005-10-24
Don Johnson plays a dangerous sociopath who enjoys planning the execution of the women he uses while they think they are using him. He lures a beautiful well connected attorney into defending him against a murder charge by creating evidence that links her to the crime.
So here's the review: Johnson delivers a stunning portrayal of a man who is barely sane but perfectly effective in his manipulations of people, specifically women. Every scene in which he reveals his character is riveting in its complexity. Without Johnson this is an entertaining movie with a competent cast. But Johnson's perfomance is a master class in acting. If you want to see how it's done, get the DVD.
Well done formula with standard twists.......2005-08-16
A man (Don Johnson) that looks guilty as sin is accused of murdering his wife He chooses a well proven lawyer (Rebecca De Mornay) to defend him.
Now you are thinking of all those lawyer movies where they get the person off to find them guilty in the end like "Trial and Error" (1962) or the one "Hostile Witness" (1968) with Ray Milland. Well quit thinking that.
Well this is well done in the short time of a movie yet the formula is different. The story will become very apparent and there will be no surprises until the quick end to get it over with scenario.
guilty as sin .......2005-08-10
This dvd is in perfect condition a 5 if I ever saw one.came package well and came when it said it would.I recommened this dvd to every body.
A ripoff of another movie.......2004-08-06
This was a good movie, EXCEPT that the basic idea was done eight years earlier. The movie "Jagged Edge" starred Glen Close and Jeff Bridges and was about a lawyer (Close) who defended an accused wife killer (Bridges). She has doubts about his innocence and finds out the truth and then of course, he tries to kill her.
Rebecca De Mornay-WOW!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-05-23
I think Rebecca De Mornay is a fantastic actress. In this movie she was the best I've ever seen her acting. Her Level of emotion and her talent was so passionate. I just wish she was in parts of this caliber more often.I wonder if Rebecca is'nt being offered the big parts anymore. It is the public's loss and the movie industries loss if thats the case.I haven't seen her in a memorable major role for a long time.
I saw her in the film "The Cradle Will Rock" years ago. That was a fabulous performance-but this part in "Guilty As Sin" was better. Her heart of kindness comes through and her fear of being taken advantage of by Don Johnson's character. Her strength in this movie is magnificent-emotionally and physically. Each time I've seen this movie I see it for the first time..because I see new levels of her character that I had'nt noticed before.

Oh, so mind numbingly boring.....PLEASE if there is a film maker out there....PLEASE make a QUALITY version of this classic!!
This Dorian is SO hot.......2006-09-02
I love this version :p
He's a good actor too...
Picture of Dorian Grey.......2006-07-08
As in all of Oscar Wildes work this had an excellent story line. The acting was wonderful and it followed the book quite well. This is a must see for anyone that values good literature.
fills the eye but NOT the ear.......2006-03-09
I'm just another customer who was very disappointed to discover that my new DVD of this title (as well as the replacement DVD MPI sent me) had such appallingly bad audio (the actors sound as if they're speaking through wads of cotton). It's also worth noting that MPI's DVD of "Turn of the Screw" has the exact same problem. Beware!
Dorian is very handsome.......2005-10-09
I saw mothion picture about Dorian Gray at the first time. This visual image of Dorian is wonderful for my opinion. I think Wilde's Dorian must be like it

Original Sin belongs in the "so bad it's good" category of languid potboilers, offering enough nudity, sexual chemistry, and far-fetched plotting to make it an enjoyable lazy-day diversion. Based on Cornell Woolrich's novel Waltz into Darkness (previous filmed by François Truffaut as Mississippi Mermaid) and set in turn-of-the-century Cuba, the film traces a tailspin of amorous obsession when coffee plantation owner Luis (Antonio Banderas) discovers that his American mail-order bride (Angelina Jolie) is not the plain wife he'd expected, but a beautiful, scheming thief who's after his fortune. The movie asserts that love is truly blind, but absurd twists of plot make Luis appear more stupid than passionate. Writer-director Michael Cristofer fared better with Jolie in Gia; here, he's made another good-looking film about beautiful people, but its plot just can't be taken seriously. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-05-13
I had been searching for the Original Sin DVD for a number of years. I had seen it once when I was very young, and it wasn't available in the UK. It may not be a life changing movie, but I found it very enjoyable to watch. Jolie and Banderas work very well together. A lot better than you'd think.
Definitely one to buy!
Passion of Mind entertwined with Passionate Bodies.......2007-02-15
The film is well titled and is full of intrigue and mis-direction, yet it always returns to its central theme of over arching sexuality and attractiveness.
Better than expected.......2007-02-13
I had seen the rated version of this movie, but bought the unrated version instead. Great Movie...!! Rated or not. Worth the watch. Angelina Jolie is wonderful in this movie. And Antonino Banderas-its always a pleasure to watch him.
Sexy afternoon thriller.......2007-01-25
Please don't buy this film if you are a super film critic and wish to tear apart the weaker aspects of Original Sin. Buy this film if you love love and are fans of Antonio Bandaras and Angelina Jolie. It was quite a strech for these two blockbuster actors to do such intimatly nude scenes together, I have never seen either do nudity. They were beautiful together and sizzled the screen with their bedroom and tub love making. It was definatly an afternoon turn on to see these two great actors make love in such a realistic fashion it made me blush. Thomas Jane added more to the film with his bad boy good looks, these three actors were made to take their clothes off, they all had such awesome bodies, it was art on the screen. The plot was set in Havana, and shot in Mexico and you could really get a feel for the Spanish influence Antonio wore elegant panama suits and the wedding scene all the people wore beautiful panama draped white suits it really made you feel you were in Cuba, the shots of the cuban country side were rich with sensual colors and mexican people and planations were beautiful. The plot had many interesting twists to keep you intrigued. When I saw this movie I was extrmemly surprise that it didn't get a better box office review, but I am the kind of person that doesn't always like what everybody else does and this is one film I really loved.
Original Angelina.......2006-09-11
I am really glad that I got the unrated version of this movie. It was worth the extra cost. I would put this at the top of my favorite Angelina Jolie movies list.
Hot Dawg! This one rocks!

Okay, so Booty Call is trashy and often sophomoric. It is still funny. Tommy Davidson and Tamala Jones have been dating for almost two months and are pushed into that big romantic night by best friends Jamie Foxx and Vivica A. Fox (as the hysterically named "Lysterine"). The friends, of course, engage in a verbal war based on instant loathing and mutual attraction. The humor is low-brow and sometimes stereotypical, but this is worth watching just for the scene in which the two guys, concerned about "safe sex," cover themselves in plastic wrap. It pushes the envelope, which is fun, but the clearly homophobic tendencies cause it to lose ground. Still, there is chemistry between the players and plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Customer Reviews:
I've seen funnier.......2007-06-27
I bought this movie for a friend who just loved it. I on the other hand think it was mediocre. Other than a handful of funny "one-liners" this movie leaves little to be desired. High point of the movie, almost seeing Vivica A. Fox naked...almost.
Quality is how I like it........2007-05-14
I love it buying products that are just how you like them.
Very funny ;-).......2007-03-11
Sure, this isn't Oscar material, but it is very funny. I saw it years and years ago, and yesterday picked up a copy for under $10 at the mall so I grabbed it. I laughed as much as I did back then.
There is plenty of humour, raunch and mishaps here. Jamie Foxx about steals the show and Vivica A Fox is the set up for him. Each dislikes each other at the start, but soon things heat up. His best friend is finally gonna get to sleep with his seven week girlfriend and he can't wait. The hilarity starts up when everyone's about to start getting it on and problems keep cropping up.
To me, the two funniest parts is the scene at the restaurant with Jamie speaking Chinese and the scene under the table with the dog. You are not getting Disney here so be warned - but you are getting under an hour and a half of fun. This is cute and extremely light. No thinking required.
Hilarious and smart, an underrated movie destined to be a classic farce........2006-02-21
I didn't expect to like Booty Call. On the surface it seemed like just another ghetto comedy, however, it's actually a clever sex farce that shows African-Americans in a positive light. In between the raunchy jokes there are some great messages in this intelligent story about safe sex and relationships between African-Americans.
The plot is simple: Rushon, a guy who is in a relationship with a girl for seven weeks hasn't been able to get any. So he recruits his buddy Bunz to go out on a double date with him with her next door neighbor Listerine. After a dinner of Scrimp fried rice at the Chinese restaurant they play some cards and a hilarious game of footsie under the table-one thing leads to another and...The guys have to go to the store to buy some condoms. $38.00 overspent at a Chinese store for lamsbskin condoms and some hilarious Yo-Yo jokes later it's back to the cribs and after some wickedly funny impressions from Jamie Foxx one thing leads to another...Unfortunately the condoms are lambskin, no good for safe sex. Back to the store again for latex condoms. The Chinese store is closed, but the Arab store cross-town is open 24 hours. They get the condoms but the killer the dog has to go for a walk...A dog chase later and one thing leads to another...it's back to the store for plastic wrap. More gags about a white robber and back to the crib for a nearly fatal Saran wrap disaster. The guys get tired of the blocking and decide to go home. Trying to hail a cab, the guys run into a paranoid cab driver. Dude drops his gun and bolts out of his cab. Rushon gets shot. Nothing serious just needs some stitches. A farcical trip to the hospital to get those stitches will leave you in stitches. After having to put up with so much Davidson's character finally gets some. Bunz on the other hand...Well, you'll have to see the DVD to find out what happens with him.
Tommy Davidson gives a solid straight man performance and Jamie Foxx steals scenes a Bunz, the happy go lucky buddy always looking for a good time. His best scene is where he does the impressions. Foxx's take on Dr. King's "Free at last" is hilarious! Tamala Jones is solid as Davidson's love interest Viveca A. Fox is a hoot as Listerine, the middle class woman with the freak inside her.
Creatively Booty Call is an innovative film destined to be a classic in the future. It's very rare to see African-American comedians tackle different comedy styles like dark comedy and farcical comedy in a movie and do it so well; normally I have to watch white movies like Heathers and Clockwatchers to see that type of humor utilized. The entire cast has a great script to work with featuring solid one-liners that play to the actors' strengths. Davidson has room to be straight, while Foxx has time to ad-lib and do his thing, impressions. Even Tamala Jones and Viveca Fox get jokes in this movie. It's the sign of a top quality black movie when the women have fully developed characters that are the equal of their male counterparts. So many black films forget about the sisters; I'm so glad the producers of this film treated them with respect this time.
Booty Call is a Shawn James Five Star essential Video. Pick this on up with How U Like Me now for a great at home African-American romantic comedy double feature. Both these movies are side splittingly funny while making statements about life in the black community.
This was a cute movie.......2005-06-06
this was a cute date movie or a movie where you might want to invite a guy over to look at as you eat chineese food with some plum wine. As a Jamie Foxx lover this movie would have suffered if he was not in it. he made the movie. that is why i wanted to look at this movie. i would like to see him and Vivica Fox do another movie. actually, i can see them do a fun Doris Day/Rock Hudson remake, like "Pillow Talk" at least Jamie can use his musical skills in it. if a producer reads this, i hope they would really consider that because they make a nice acting pair and i would love to see them do more movies together. i truly enjoyed this movie. really cute.
