An incredible show showing true purity and kindness, the angel Belldandy, and the beautiful and pure and holy love story of her and Keichi that pulls on your heartstrings and makes you smile, cry and laugh. I've seen nothing like it before or since! A must watch.

So what makes 'Oh My Goddess: The Collector's Edition' so special?

REMASTERED VIDEO QUALITY!

Thats right for the first time ever Animeigo have released the remastered version of 'Oh My Goddess'. The original release which was split over 2 dvds had very medicore quality with rainbowing, dot crawl and too much brightness.

Now for the first time you can see Belldandy and her friends the way they were meant to look. Colours now actually look saturated opposed to the washed out look of the previous dvd release.

Conclusion - Even if you bought the original dvd releases, you owe to yourself to upgrade and to see the huge difference in video quality.

Kosuke Fujishima's delightful Oh My Goddess! began as a manga in 1988 and was made into a five-part OAV in 1993-94. Fujishima used bits of Western mythology for his offbeat romantic comedy: the three sister-goddesses are based on the Norns, the Fates in Scandinavian legends. Keiichi Morisato is a familiar anime type: a short, skinny nerd at the bottom of the pecking order. One afternoon, while he's stuck in his dorm taking phone messages for his older classmates and trying to order lunch, the lovely Belldandy appears and declares she is a goddess who will grant him one wish. Convinced she's part of an elaborate prank, Keiichi asks her to become his girlfriend forever--and is dumbfounded when she grants his wish. Her presence gets him kicked out of the all-male dorm, so they set up housekeeping in an abandoned temple. What should be an idyllic existence is soon complicated by the arrival of Megumi, Keiichi's kid sister; Urd, Belldandy's voluptuous older sister; and Skuld, her sulky younger sister. But despite the contretemps, the bond between Keiichi and Belldandy only grows stronger. Keiichi, like Tenchi or Akito in Nadesico, is initially unprepossessing, but his maladroit exterior conceals a genuinely kind heart. Perhaps because she's a real goddess, rather than a magical girl, Belldandy never whines or grows smarmy; she remains a warm, gentle presence. Voice actors Scott Simpson and Juliet Cesario offer sensitive performances that add to the series' charm and good-natured comedy. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up for minor nudity and occasional risqué humor. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars A must see!.......2006-08-18

At first I didn't expected much. So should you, as it the first chapters the plot is too much about Keiichi daily problems, but wait! It does get better. Watch it until the last chapter, and you may notice, as I did, a story where true love is painted in all its colors. Love completely selfless. This move touched me, and I hope it touch you as it did to me. Totally recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Good for fans of the series, but there's more out there.......2006-05-13

I remember when I first heard about Oh My Goddess. At the time, the movie was not released, and there was only the manga and this OVA available. Because the manga was not yet out in my area, I purchased the OVA. It's a good way to sample what the series is like, and a good way for a newbie to decide whether or not they like it. However, in comparison to the manga and the new anime series out, it's very tiny and only gives you a glimpse into a much bigger world.

Anyone who is well-versed in anime knows the basic set-up, even if they have never seen or read anything of Oh My Goddess. College student Keiichi Morisato dials the wrong number and winds up with a goddess, Belldandy, offering to grant him a wish. Thinking it's a prank, Keiichi declares he wants a beautiful woman like this goddess to be with him forever. Belldandy grants the wish with the slight misinterpretation that he specifically meant her. Yet the Almighty has spoken, the contract is made, and Belldandy is stuck on Earth with Keiichi. However, Keiichi lives in an all-male dorm, meaning no girls allowed!

Such is a summary of episode 1 of the OVA. In episode 2, older sister Urd invites herself over to help heat things up between Keiichi and Belldandy. In episode 3, baby sister Skuld shows up, who is not pleased with the idea of sharing her beloved older sister with a mere mortal.

This first volume is mostly comedy with some sweet, romantic moments. And for a love story, Oh My Goddess can be rather tame, but still emotionally driven. But as a device that merely retells something that the manga and new anime series are already portraying, it can be rather dull. If you have already read the manga or have seen the anime, you won't really miss out on much. You may even be bored with it. But if you're a die-hard fan of the series, you will like it, or at least want to add to your collection.

This OVA is a good way to gauge whether or not you're into the story. If you are, I recommend looking into the manga or the anime, as well as the movie. Creator Kosuke Fujishima created a vast world with more than these 4 main characters and their lives, some characters that I like more than the goddesses and Keiichi. You can also see a great deal more character development than what can be done in a 5-episode OVA.

But the OVA is a cheap way to start, and could be a big money saver than investing the manga or anime series.

1 out of 5 stars I'm the only one to rate this 1 star, so far.......2006-04-22

If you like shojou anime, this really isn't the anime for you. I just don't understand why everyone is calling this anime "romance". There is absolutely nothing romantic about some pathetic loser in between 3 beautiful goddesses. Sure, there is love, but it's from the male point of view. Belldandy comes off to me as a sort of airhead, which I can't stand. There are much better animes out there trust me. What's so great about watching an anime where one ugly boy is surrounded by gorgeous women? Fushigi Yuugi is the best shojou, one girl surrounded by bishounen like guys. Well, most anyway. I didn't like this anime because I thought it was just another male-type fantasy. Would never spend another penny on this junk. I'd rather set my own fantasies, like being Tohru on Fruits Basket or Tsukushi on Hana Yori Dango. There might be romance in it, but I don't like it, it's just my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars oohhhh.......2005-07-30

well i love it! its cute but only like three episodes. i heard there's a tv show for it now in like japan, and they're selling it now on amazon. i love belldandy's character and voice over though, its soo perfect. ahh overall, belldandy makes it. it's only great because of her. seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Romantic Comedy.......2005-05-24

I really enjoyed this show. A 5-episode series spanning over two volumes of DVD. A college student Keichi Morisato is surrounded by three goddesses Belldandy, Urd and Skuld after making a mistake call to the Goddess Help Office and a contract with Belldandy. The show is very romantic and heart-warming with comedic relieves from Urd and Skuld. Both volumes of the DVD look like having their video sourced from a Laser Disc transfer. It has some rainbow effects and slight color bleeds in certain scenes. Although the video department is lacking, the show itself is golden. I wish the studio could acquire the new, fully remastered transfer from Japan for a future release. Anyway, as I said earlier, the video artifacts are not overly distracting and by all means get both volumes to enjoy the show now.

5 out of 5 stars Songs are also good.......2006-06-07

Well... I think that this DVD has enough reviews for buyers information. But I want to add a bit of background information about the series of Goddess. The original story is actually from a Japanese Manga named Ah! My Goddess (Ah! Megamisama). This OVA version of DVD is kind of abstract of the whole manga book, introducing only the certain portion of its original. They produced later a movie version of the Goddess series, Ah My Goddess, and also a TV series version of it (Ah My Goddess). So, there are three different versions of, well I can't say it's the same story, but maybe "converging story" is the right word. Definitely, the TV version is the longest with 6 volumes of DVDs so far and follows most closely with the original Manga books. This OVA version consist of 5 episodes (3 for volume 1 and 2 for volume 2). First three episodes are more fun and romantic, the latter 2 episodes are somewhat sad but beautiful. I also want to mention the originality of three Goddesses. Although their in-movie roles has little things to do with the original Nordic myth, they are actually the three goddesses who represent time. Urd for past, Berthandy for present, and Skuld for future. Plus, here in the movie, Urd uses the spirit of fire and thunder, Belldandy air and wind, and Skuld uses the water spirits. Sorry, I was a bit off the track. Anyway, another thing I want to add is the music. People kind of forget it to mention but they are actually quite good. They are basically midi music so that it is rather simple but they are actually sung by the voice actresses who performed the three goddesses. If you figure out which voice is from whom and what they are singing, the songs will make far more interesting to you. Additionally, I have a suggestion that "NEVER try the commentary track from the English voice crews." It is given as a plus feature of the DVD but from my expirience it is almost a stink that messes up your previous taste of the Goddess show. Their jokes and comments are really obnoxious.

5 out of 5 stars OMG is hilarious, romantic and heart-warming.......2005-05-24

Volume 2 of OMG begins 8 months after Belldandy came to live with Keichi. The 2 episodes in this DVD are getting more series than Volume 1, putting Keichi and Bellandy's love to the test. Of course, the show has a happy ending. If you pay attention to the details, you can find a hint why Belldandy came to Keichi in the first place. Anyway, it is an excellent romantic comedy and it spans only over two DVDs. By all means, get them and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Bell-chan Sugoi, ne?.......2003-10-16

I love this OAV series. Depending on my mood, it's either the best or the second-best anime OAV series I've seen.

Part of this is because the two main characters are just plain nice people. There's SO many anime where the main characters are annoying, stupid, stubbornly clueless, rude, or any of the above. It's not always necessary to have the main characters be clearly flawed in some way, and in this case, they aren't. If Keiichi has any flaw, it's that he's a bit too tentative around Belldandy, but can you BLAME him? She IS a goddess, after all.

And they still have conflicts and problems -- an important thing to remember when watching the show is that even for good people, prior mistakes can catch up with you.

The climactic scenes never fail to bring tears to my eyes. If you're a romantic, get this anime. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars great tv val 1........2003-03-01

I love the ah! my goddess show. It is a very fun and happy show. It wasent as good as the movie to me but it holds its own.

5 out of 5 stars Great Two Episodes.......2003-01-27

The bad thing about the "Oh My Goddess" OAV series was that there were only five episodes created. Having been introduced to all of the major players, these final two episodes have much less humor and take a much more serious nature. Belldandy and Keiichi can no long come into close proximatey of each other as disasterous results happen due to system malfunctions. To make matters worse, Belldandy is being recalled to heaven to handle the situation. Keiichi now only has three days to buy Belldandy a ring and keep a promise he doesn't even remember.

Storywise, get the tissues ready! Call me a sap, but I litterally could feel the pain of separation from a loved one as the story progressed. Belldandy can't see Keiichi except from an extreme distance and so knits him a sweater -- a gift of her love since she will be forced to erase herself from his mind as well as remove the evidence she was even there. Keiichi works every possible job he can find just to get enough money to buy Belldandy an expensive ring -- a sacrafice of self to show his love. It is very sweet, touching, and romantic.

The DVD has the same extras as the first one. There is the audio commentary by the English voice actors which serves as humor but little else. I would have liked some more thoughts on when they were in the studio and coming up with script changes, but instead we get a lot of jokes to cover the serious, sad situation of the story going on. For filler, we have the main theme played without the credits and all five closing scense with song minus credits.

While liberties are taken with the English script, the English dub is very good. The English subtitles are even better if you are a purist in wanting to know what the Japanese are saying. It's not perfect, but of all the official subtitling I've seen, AnimeIgo really tries hard to do it right!

Bottom line: Fans of "Love Hina" or even "Hand Maid May" or other romantic-comedy shows will really enjoy this DVD!
