"I am invincible! No one can survive my shadow skills! With a single stroke I am unbeatable!" In a world where martial arts gladiators with unheard-of skills battle for glory and justice, young orphan Gau trains relentlessly under his cocky adoptive sister Ella (a great champion) to master the elusive Shadow Skill, a mystical style with a dark past. His education of course allows for plenty of flashy fights, and that's the main appeal of this lively collection of two short 1996 OVA features. The animation is limited but the art direction is detailed and vivid, and director Hiroshi Negishi saves his budget for the battles, which offer impressive displays of animation pyrotechnics. Though hardly deep ("We can get closer to God by fighting!" opines the mysterious champion Scarface), the episodic adventures zip right along, and the climax packs an unexpected charge of drama between the blows. For ages 13 and up for violence and some strong language. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Awesome for the Epilogue alone.......2006-09-01

I don't know which started first, the series or the movie. The Epilogue alone is what made this DVD worthwhile. It is as other reviews described below with great light and shadowing effects. The action is simply spectacular and will leave the martial artist in you drooling for more. As its name suggests, it takes place pretty much at the end of the Shadow Skill series with Gau and Elle facing each other in combat to see how much Gau has grown as a Shadow Skill fighter. There are no words to describe how great the fight scenes are!

The only downside to this DVD is the actuall movie itself. At first, you can tell it's Anime style is different from the Epilogue. It's alright, but as it progresses on, it's like their funds began to dry up on this project. The Anime progressively looks worse and worse until at one point I swear one of the characters was looking like E.T. with her eyes! I couldn't stand watching any more of it as horrendous as it was looking. THAT and the fact that the movie basically covers the same storyline you can catch in the t.v. series DVDs (which look a lot better and are a lot funnier too!).

But overall this DVD is well worth it for the Epilogue! Don't bother with watching the other half of the DVD being the movie and go for the t.v. series on DVD instead!

4 out of 5 stars High budget action-packed fighting anime BUT...!!!!!.......2005-10-12

COOL HIGH BUDGET FUN anime to add to your action collection!! Try also: Battle Arena Toshiden, Fatal Fury the movie, Gowcaizer, Street Fighter the movie and Fist of the North Star.

WARNING:
This DVD have two movies: Shadow Skill the movie and Shadow Skill epiloge. AVOID THE MOVIE!!!!!! It's HORRIBLE, LOW BUDGET, CHESSY POWERS, POOR ANIMATION.....!!! Just makes me want to throw up!!!!!
* GO FOR THE EPILOGE!!!!!!!!! this is the one that RULES!!!! Buy this anime!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!

P.S: This anime is NOT hentai (porno).

ADIOS!!!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-08-27

In a war torn world, a martal art called "Shadow Skill" exists, and you must fight to survive. Although interesting, pretty boring characters and a very hard-to-follow story line with several plot holes (I'm not kidding, and I fully understood "Akira"). However, the bit of story line that does make sense is pretty good, and the fight sequences are excellent.

3 out of 5 stars a bit far out but entertaining.......2005-07-04

If you are new to anime and want to see an entertaing movie with a not so in depth plot, than Shadow Skill is for you. While a bit over the top at times with martial art scenes, people will most likely be drawn into this flick mainly for the purpose of discovering what the shadow skill really is. Though Shadow Skill is targeted at kids, teens and young adults who are into anime may want to give this a look.

4 out of 5 stars Shadow Skill.......2005-05-01

Shadow Skill is a great Anime, despite the impressions you may get from the cover artwork. The story line is excellent, with the young orphan Gau being taught the shadow skill by his adoptive sister Elle. The anime features plenty of blood and some foul language, but is a great anime non the less. The only unfortunate thing about the anime is that it is too short a series. They should have made the series longer than they did. Besides for that one "flaw", Shadow Skill is an excellent martial arts anime.

Description

It was the ancient people of the Holy Nation of Ashlianna who first recognized the existence of a power which coursed through all matter. "Soma," they called it, residing in all worldly things, flowing freely through space and time like waves rolling in upon the shores of existence. To this day it continues to bestow the greatest concentration of its blessed energy upon the people of Ashlianna, descended from those very ancients who first gave it its name. But these days a shadow looms over Soma, and bad omens hang in the very winds which blow through the countryside. As the ancient ruins reveal their secrets, evidence suggests that these are the dark days prophesized in the hieroglyphs. Now, with the Apocalypse on the horizon, demons roam the streets of Kuruda, none more vicious than "G," the 58th Sevalle, back from a journey through madness and death, on a deranged vendetta against King Iba Sutra. Is this the spark with which Solfan will ignite the dreaded "annihilation of the holy nation"? And when the flames die down, and Kuruda lies in ruins, which of our heroes will lay dead? As new characters enter and exit the fray, you may be sure of one thing: from hereon out, nothing will ever be the same!

This series surprised when I saw it the first time. The animation is very good for a TV-series. Elle looks different yet similar enough to her counterpart in the OAV series. Some of the fights are impressive and others are well done. It has a cool story with several twists in it that makes it very enjoyable to follow.
This anime is recommended to anyone who likes action and anime in general.

In addition to the 1998 broadcast series Shadow Skill, there have been three OVAs based on Megumu Okada's popular manga about champion fighter Elle Ragu. Elle, a.k.a. Shadow Skill, has so completely mastered difficult fighting techniques, she's attained the the rank of Sevalle--the 59th to hold that title in 2,000 years. With her adopted kid brother Gau Ban and her chiding companion Faurink Maya, Elle wanders through the realm of Kuruda fighting in tournaments and killing demon beasts. When she's not fighting, she can usually be found in a tavern racking up a substantial tab. Shadow Skill mixes offbeat humor with feats of derring-do, but the flat timing keeps much of the comedy and combat from playing as effectively as it should. The net effect is like watching Lina Inverse from Slayers portraying Goku in a Takarazuka production of a minor Dragon Ball Z adventure. (Rated TV PGV, suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Shadow Skill is a great action series that you'll certainly enjoy!.......2006-09-01

Shadow Skill is a great series that I am glad I invested in! To clarify what I have seen on reviews for the Shadow Skill movie DVD, the T.V. series is available in the United States. I managed to find 3 of the six volumes in local stores. I am unsure if they are getting harder to find because of lack of sales, but it was certainly impossible to find the others and thus brought me to Amazon. Was this series worth it? Oh heck yeah!

The story centers around a young female fighter having gained the title of champion status among her people. She and her younger brother, Gau, are warriors in constant training and honing of their abilities in the fighting style of Shadow Skill, a deadly martial art that can kill with one blow. The problem is Elle has a knack for running up tabs at bars while being hilariously funny at it in great drunken fashion. Many of the adventures they soon get involved in are a result of them looking for jobs to pay their debts and keep a place to live. I haven't gotten through the whole story yet but I can tell it's doing like all other Animes in a slow steady start to a fast paced action filled storyline!

The Anime style was a bit offsetting at first. It isn't the beautiful clarity and visuals of Full Metal Alchemist or Ghost in the Shell, but it is very good nonetheless. The action sequences are well drawn out in which you can clearly see each move the fighter throws out. Although one little annoying thing is the cutscenes into Japanese symbols with the English translation. Imagine Goku from DBZ doing a Spirit Bomb attack and it cuts to a black screen with wording telling you the attack he's doing. Yeah. Not needed. But it doesn't show up that often and can easily be tolerated.

The English voices take some getting used to at first. All the other characters have voices you would imagine suitable with what you're seeing. But with Elle and Gau, they seem a bit young in tone compared to what you see and would expect. But considering Elle and Gau are both in their teens it truly is fitting. That and when they get angry, their voicing really shines and you can feel their rage. For those curious about the Japanese voices, they are perfect and I plan to watch the whol series in Japanese as well.

Shadow Skill is certainly worth a series to invest in whether by making it an addition to your Anime collection or you love an action/comedy filled series. I certainly have no regrets and give it two thumbs WAY up!
