This film contains graphic violence and brief nudity.

Known as Gunnm in Japan and then Battle Angel Alita to Western manga readers, Battle Angel (in all of its incarnations) is now part of the canon of Blade Runner-inspired anime cyberpunk.

The film version follows a "Hunter Warrior" and cyborg healer named Ido. Ido formerly lived in the floating land of Zalem (Tiphares in the book), the paradise that hovers over the refuse heap of Scrap Iron City in which he now resides with his former lover, Chiren. In his travels as a bounty hunter (killing spine thieves in a world in which human nerve tissue has become the most precious commodity), Ido one day discovers and repairs the remnants of a cyborg whom he names Gally (Alita in the manga). Though possessing the body of a young woman, Gally embodies Ido's most sophisticated and lethal cybernetic skill. In the first episode on the DVD, "Rusty Angel," Gally challenges Chiren's own creation, Greweicia--a brain-eating gladiator--to a death match. In "Tears Sign" Gally discovers that her first love, Yugo, has put himself in the employ of the spine trader Vector so that he can earn his way, he thinks, to Zalem. Gally confronts her fellow bounty hunters to protect Yugo, only to watch him horribly wounded in a plot to capture her for Vector.

Yukito Kishiro's finely detailed line drawings in the original manga (like a cleaner version of Miyazaki's style in the Nausicaa books) are impossible to translate into film. What the film loses in detail, however, it makes up for in its intense action sequences and shadowy mixtures of color and a darkly cinematic soundtrack. Anime fans should be prepared for some pretty graphic violence--including some horrific scenes of decapitation. Also, the action keeps the plot moving at breakneck speed, so character development often seems to happen in leaps; you'll want to read the books to learn more about Gally/Alita and her world.

For English speakers, the DVD is best watched in the original Japanese with subtitles. The dubbing seems to raise the pitch of everyone's voice, changing the mood of the film from tragic-cool to slightly comical. Gally's English is especially annoying. With her original Japanese voice (sometimes childlike and sometimes a seductive whisper), she is a perfectly deadly heroine with a leather-clad style that anticipates The Matrix. --Patrick O'Kelley

In the cactus-studded Mexican backcountry of the 1860s, a surly drifter who could easily be mistaken for the Man with No Name becomes protector and lethal helpmate to a red-haired nun wanted by the French for aiding the Juarista revolutionaries. Essentially a two-character showcase for the newly stellar Clint Eastwood and what was beginning to seem the poststellar Shirley MacLaine (subbing for Elizabeth Taylor), this sardonic study in testy collaboration, mutual deception and distrust, and slightly creepy sexual attraction is highly rated by a fairly small number of critics--chiefly, one suspects, for the dual-auteur cachet of having been directed by Don Siegel and based on a story by Budd Boetticher. Others deem it an undersauced spaghetti Western and find that the stars grate on the viewer as well as each other. Cinematography by the great Gabriel Figueroa is some consolation, but... if only Boetticher had been allowed to direct. --Richard T. Jameson

1 out of 5 stars lame western.......2007-05-22

tough to knock anything the late/capable don siegel helmed... can't say it's his fault, either. film doesn't hold up.
male lead is dull to the point it's painful to watch. the always credible shirley maclaine (particularly in this type of role) does what she can to keep the tale interesting... alas, it is not enough.

even the competant score by gifted Ennio Morricone does not really help matters much.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Western.......2007-05-15

I love this movie with Clint Eastwood. I can watch this over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Days of Heaven - Most beautiful music ever composed.......2007-04-06

This review refers to the "Days of Heaven" tracks on the CD. Track 12 on wards. Even though as some reviewers had noted, only 25 minutes. But it's 25 minutes of heavenly music. 25 minutes of soothing lyrical tranquility that breezes past your eardrums so fleetingly, but yet so memorable that it remains with you for the rest of your life.

I have been searching for this soundtrack since 1998. Now, my long wait is over ever since I have received this long-begotten CD in my mail yesterday. With excitement I have not felt since I was kid, I quickly inserted the CD into the DVD-ROM drive. Almost by instinct, I chose the title track "Days of Heaven", the last track on the CD; soft strings that starts slowly and it revolves around a familiar tune that repeats itself again and again for 3 minutes, but it doesn't irritate me one bit, unlike 80's wall-to-wall music.

I am aware that this is not the complete soundtrack to the film. It's sad that the tracks are bundled up like a double feature with Two Mules for Sister Sara. I really hope that whoever is holding onto the rights to the soundtrack, would release an official album. This is the least they can do to "The Maestro", considering that he was given a lifetime Oscar. He's the film composer equivalent of Stanley Kubrick. Geniuses in their respective mediums, but never recognised by the Academy. Not that they need it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Two mules for sister Sara.......2007-03-24

I collect all of Clint's Western movies. This one is a classic, very funny,
and great irony in it. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly "Days" should have its own CD release.......2007-03-03

This review is a bit of a cheat because I don't own this particular CD though I've long owned the Eastwood-MacLaine movie on VHS and the 1978 "Days of Heaven" original soundtrack LP, so I'm quite familiar with the music.

And I do LOVE the music; what a thrill to see the great Ennio Morricone at last week's 79th Academy Awards ceremony receiving his Oscar. (Yes, okay, it was a tad awkward watching the weathered Eastwood translating Morricone's emotional Italian for American audiences, but moving nonetheless.)

The observation has been made here that Morricone's composition for "Two Mules for Sister Sara" is at its best and most memorable when playfully underscoring the feisty MacLaine character; I'd have to agree--I remember almost nothing of the soundtrack for "Sara" when it concentrates on the action, especially the lengthy battle near the end of the film.

On the other hand, after nearly 30 years (!), the exquisite orchestral "Days of Heaven" soundtrack remains a towering achievement and one of my personal favorites. Morricone's yearning, beautiful music is by turns lilting, wildly celebratory, lushly romantic, achingly melancholy, and darkly ominous--a perfect match to the majesty and sweep of Malick's elegant, elegiac masterpiece. (Accordingly, the 5 star rating is primarily for Morricone's "Heaven" music rather than for "Sara".)

In short, though "Two Mules for Sister Sara" was very entertaining as a movie, I'm not sure the world truly needs a full original soundtrack for it; it's inconceivable to me however that the score for the epic "Days of Heaven" still lacks its own separate release on disc.

One final note: though the item for review is a double-soundtrack compact disc, I notice the majority of the remarks here address the movie rather than its music, and only the Eastwood-MacLaine movie at that. (What's up with that??) Kudos, then, to reviewer Mark Eakes from Lompoc, CA for his thoughtful review of the merits, pro and con of this CD.

It seemed like a pretty good career move, and for the most part it was. Demi Moore will never top any rational list of great actresses, but as her career stalled in the mid-1990s she had enough internal fire and external physicality to be just right for her title role in G.I. Jane. Her character's name isn't Jane--it's Jordan O'Neil--but the fact that she lacks a penis makes her an immediate standout in her elite training squad of Navy SEALs. She's been recruited as the first female SEAL trainee through a series of backroom political maneuvers, and must prove her military staying power against formidable odds--not the least of which is the abuse of a tyrannical master chief (Viggo Mortensen) who puts her through hell to improve her chances of success. Within the limitations of a glossy star vehicle, director Ridley Scott manages to incorporate the women-in-military issue with considerable impact, and Moore--along with her conspicuous breast enhancements and that memorable head-shaving scene--jumps into the role with everything she's got. Not a great movie by any means, but definitely a rousing crowd pleaser, and it's worth watching just to hear Demi shout the words "Suck my ----!!" (rhymes with "chick"). --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Demi Moore (DISCLOSURE, INDECENT PROPOSAL) is in top form in this action-packed hit! Moore stars as gutsy Lieutenant O'Neil, the first woman ever given the opportunity to earn a place in the armed forces most highly skilled combat unit -- the elite Navy SEALS! But the already brutal rigors of training camp turn into an unimaginable test of courage and determination once it becomes clear that no one -- powerful politicians, top military brass, or her male Navy SEAL teammates -- wants her to succeed! A critically acclaimed triumph directed by action hitmaker Ridley Scott (ALIEN, THELMA & LOUISE) -- you'll cheer for G.I. JANE as this brave soldier proves she belongs among the best of the best!

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unrealistic and inaccurate.......2007-05-24

This movie was a real disappointment. Laced with inaccurate facts and utterly unrealistic scenarios. Not worth the watch.

3 out of 5 stars Silly Film Premised Upon a Politically Correct Fantasy.......2007-03-17

The scene where Demi Moore defeats a large man in hand to hand combat is utterly ridiculous. The odds against this happening in the real world are next to zilch. Woman are genetically inferior to men when it comes to physical competition and fighting. At the very best, a well trained female might be able to overpower an athletically inferior male. Other than that, when everything else is equal---the woman is going to lose badly.

Political correctness and wishful thinking dominate so many of the films released by the leftist Hollywood crowd. GI Jane is simply another attempt to deny reality and adhere to the dictates of the feminist movement. It should be listed as a comedy, and not a serious adventure movie.

3 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Movie about Girl Power.......2007-03-10

G.I. Jane is a movie that follows Jordan O'Neil, the first woman to be trained as a Navy Seal. She is a test case, brought in by a female senator who wants to get women in the military. Most men expect her to fail within one week... But they don't know Jordan.

G.I. Jane, directed by Ridley Scott, is the best movie about girl power I have ever seen. The movie shows that women can be equal to men. The strongest element in the movie is therefor loud and clear: Demi Moore. She does a fantastic job portraying O'Neil and gives a powerful and strong performance. The way her character fights her way up in the training course of the Navy SEALS is very interesting and great to watch. She faces it all: from sexual issues to teammates who refuse to work with her. But whatever happends, the character keeps going, and thats what I found a very strong element in the film.
Viggo Mortensen plays the Master Chief, one of the men who makes her stay a lot tougher. It's interesting to see Mortensen in a totally different role than the friendly Aragorn from the Lord of The Rings. He plays a real mean guy, and acts the part perfectly.

Ridley Scott filmed the film in a certain style. This style gives a nice atmosphere but also makes it messy at some points. Some of the action scenes (there aren't that many) are filmed with a shakey zoom in and out camera. Of course it gives the scene a certain feeling, but it leaves some kind of messy impression. So as a whole the film looks a bit messy, but that fact doesn't destroy the enjoyment at all. I was entertained by the film. From the training process to the tense endbattle, it is a great ride. The music is very good and also helps the film considering atmosphere and power. Seeying Demi Moore doing one arm push ups while a great theme is playing gives a great powerboost.
So Demi Moore steals the show, she shows that women can be strong and still be beautiful at the same time, I love that about this film.

4 out of 5 stars Demi Moore Rocks.......2007-02-18

this film was great because Demi Moore plays such a great feminist for military fair treatment. i feel this movie shows a lot of angles of the military that we don't see and other political visions of matters that continue to be of importance today.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2007-02-03

I think that every woman should watch this movie. It was a great inspiring movie for my wife. She went on to enlist in the Army.It shows what women can overcome with determination and self confidence.HOORAH!!!!

The hardworking Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball star in the urbane and witty Forever Darling, a 1956 romantic comedy, made at the height of the couple's popularity as co-stars of I Love Lucy, about the difficulty of forging marital harmony. Arnaz plays unpretentious, visionary chemist Lorenzo "Larry" Vega, whose passion for working on a powerful chemical insecticide for the benefit of humankind means little to his wife, Susan (Ball). A creature of high society, Susan is conflicted about her destiny. Should she be concerned with acquiring a bigger house and socializing with the right people, or should she follow Larry as he takes his insecticide on a two-year field study in tropical jungles? Attempting to guide her toward the right decision is a dapper, guardian angel, who happens to take the form of James Mason because Mason is Susan's fantasy man. The script by Helen Deutsch (I'll Cry Tomorrow) indulges I Love Lucy fans with plenty of slapstick set pieces plugged into an extended camping scene. But there's also some flashy banter--Arnaz is very convincing putting well-heeled snobs in their place--and a very clever sequence in which Susan imagines herself as the heroine in a movie she happens to be watching. (A movie starring, yes, James Mason.) There's a fun, special feature in which Arnaz and Ball take time out from production on their television show to plug Forever Darling and reveal the secret of a truly happy marriage--and then get into a beef. --Tom Keogh

      Description

A lot of things can test a marriage, but Lorenzo and Susan Vega have unwittingly put their five-year union to the ultimate test: they go camping. And Susan's guardian angel, seen only by Susan, joins them. TV's I Love Lucy was in its fifth season when this romp gave fans more reasons to love its stars. Desi Arnaz plays Lorenzo, who heads for wide-open spaces to test his chemical company's new product. Wife Susan (Lucille Ball) goes, too. And soon we're all headed for comedy chaos built on tent-raising, forest critters, inflatable rafts and other typical elements of roughing it. There's one atypical element: the angel (James Mason) who wants to rescue their troubled union. Marriages may be made in heaven. But the details are worked out here below

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for Lucille Ball............2007-05-07

Pretty good movie, and funny, but not as funny as some movies (like, the Long, Long Trailer). I thought Lucy acted confused, and not at all like the comedienne we all know and love. However, this is good clean fun, and seeing Desi as a scientist was great fun. Very funny at the end too!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2006-10-29

I'm not trying to be biased or anything, as I'm a truly die-hard Lucille and Desi fan, but I thought the show was really great. It was, at the same time, romantic and innocent. I loved it. I thought it also very interesting, as the movie actually reflected Lucille and Desi's relationship in real life. For those who gave the show only one or two stars, were you actually paying attention to what they were saying? Because you have to do that in order to enjoy the movie.

      4 out of 5 stars Wonderful,innocent movie.......2006-03-28

This movie always makes me smile.Such nostalgia with the technicolor, shiny cars, women in dresses and men in suits.Lucy is one of my favorite comedians and she does a great job.I've never been a fan of Desi(sorry)but James Mason is absolutely dreamy.Forever Darling is bottom line just a fun movie to watch.

      1 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR LUCY/DESI DIEHARDS!.......2006-02-23

This is a terrible movie. When it came out in 1956 it was a box office bomb even though both stars were at the height of their powers. Time had only added to it's mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF A WONDERFUL PAIR OF MOVIES.......2005-06-27

I have seen both Forever, Darling and The Long, Long Trailer (in that order) and would be hard-pressed to say which one I liked most. I love the title song sung by the Ames Brothers, but to hear Desi sing it in Spanish was a delight. Other reviewers have mentioned James Mason (I loved him as Dr. Watson in Murder By Decree) but don't forget the actress who played Thurston Powell III's wife on Gilligan's Island, Natalie Schafer, playing Susan's high-society mother!! All the comedy scenes will leave you breathless (I loved it her slave-and-master routine when she and her husband's first jaunt in the rowboat ended (with her rowing) but don't lose sight of the reason for the trip. It was because their marriage was on the rocks that Susan went with her husband in hopes of fixing things between them, and it was in the end, when she told her husband it was time she started going in his direction rather than her own, that my tears came. It would have been glorious if more movies by this superb team had followed.

4 out of 5 stars The War Between Heaven and Hell Rages On..........2006-03-25

During the mid-nineties, Dimension Films produced a small, yet entertaining franchise of films based on a supposed 23rd chapter in the book of Revelation, this series was known as `The Prophecy'. Focusing on a second war in Heaven, this one being waged by those angels that had once been loyal to God during Satan's revolt, but after seeing the evil humanity is capable of exacting on itself, and wondering why the Creator would bother to shower His love and grace on a creation that is completely ungrateful, some of the loyal angels have questioned their allegiances. With the battle lines clearly drawn the angels take sides against each other waging a war that closed off access to Heaven by all of humanity. In 2000, Dimension released "The Prophecy 3: The Ascent", which at the time of its release was to be the 3rd and final chapter in `The Prophecy' saga. With humanity being allowed access into Heaven after a final battle between the hero of the good angels and the leader of the evil angels, the good side won and the gates were once again opened. In 2005, Dimension chose to return to this franchise and see if they could expand upon the story that was started in the initial trilogy. This seemed a daunting task, especially since the original trilogy starring Christopher Walken was for starters, just so interesting and entertaining, and secondly the storyline was completed. However, the powers-that-be within Dimension Films felt strongly enough in their franchise and released "The Prophecy 4: Uprising".

Set some time after the opening of Heaven to humanity that occurred at the end of "The Prophecy 3: The Ascent", this latest installment in `The Prophecy' franchise, aptly titled "The Prophecy 4: Uprising", focuses not on humanity's plight of non-entrance into Heaven, but rather the angels that are no longer loyal to God are now trying to find a way to once again seal the `Pearly Gates'. To achieve their nefarious goal, the evil angels are in search of The Lexicon, an ancient religious manuscript that continues to write itself and reveals the mysteries to the future. With this book, the evil angels believe that by knowing what will happen next they will be able to thwart any resistance the good angels can muster. Caught in the middle of this search is a young woman (Kari Wuhrer) who happens to be in possession of The Lexicon, and has been commissioned by a good angel to protect the book at all costs from a body-jumping evil angel who is close on her heels. Now with evil angels nipping at her heels and Satan himself offering protection, this young woman is in a fight for her life, and humanity's fate hangs in the balance.

I have to admit when I heard about Dimension Films continuing this franchise I was very skeptical, especially since the new films would not have Christopher Walken's character Gabriel in them. To me any installment into this franchise without Christopher Walken would be an absolute waste of time. Well, I am pleased to announce that not only was this film not a waste of time, it continued the franchise in a very strong way. The cast is talented, though one does miss Christopher Walken, these actors do an excellent job of carrying on the torch in this series. The storyline is interesting by having the evil angels becoming more desperate and therefore more menacing because they have already lost the war over barring humanity from Heaven, also one of the characters assisting Kari's character is a very jaded cop who has made some terrible decisions in his life, and makes him difficult to root for which is different for this franchise, since all of the other lead characters have been basically good people that have lost their faith and must get it back in order to defeat the evil angels. This twist in the series' formula allows this newest film to stand up alongside the other entries, and easily hold it's own in the franchise.

If you are a fan of this franchise, but are somewhat skeptical regarding this latest entry without Christopher Walken, let me tell you, go rent this film, you won't be sorry.

"The Prophecy 4: Uprising" is rated R for violence and language.

      4 out of 5 stars DEVIL OF A TIME.......2006-03-13

This is the fourth entry in THE PROPHECY saga, and although we miss Christopher Walken, it's a fairly decent spiritual thriller on its own. Belial has had a falling out with Satan and he wants to start a new hell. He also wants the Lexicon, the mystical book that is writing itself into the future of mankind. The book ends up in the hands of a young girl who worked for a priest and the angel Simon (voiced by Jason London) is guiding her step by step. Meanwhile, a burned out, guilt-ridden detective, Dani, is investigating the brutal ritualistic murders of several people who are having their hearts ripped out. He is aided by a shadowy Interpol agent, John Riegert, who has his own mysterious agenda.
Sean Pertwee is superb as the cop, a chain smoking cynic who has a shady past; John Light is remarkably effective as the handsome, rather acerbic John Riegert; and Kari Wuhrer has a strong sense of vulnerability as Allison.
It's all fairly entertaining and has some good suspenseful moments. Pinhead himself (Doug Bradley from HELLRAISER) is also in the talented cast.

      4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!.......2006-02-23

First of all, I didn't really have any high expectations when I started watching this movie. For one thing, it went straight to video, and that's the first sign that it's going to suck. We all know they try to make it sound so glamorous on the box, and when you take it home it's trash. I'm glad I was wrong about this one. Let me just say that the first 2 films were not only original, but great, however the 3rd installment of the franchise.."The Ascent" blew big time. With that being said, I wouldn't bother to compare it to the first 3 prophecies because this is an entirely different war this time around. This film is about The Lexicon, which is basicly a book that finishes the story of Revelation. This book is suppose to tell you about the real forthcoming of the anti-christ and the apocalypse. It's suppose to give you the real facts on how the world is suppose to end, but the book isn't finished because it's still awaiting dictation from God himself. I love movies with storylines or plots that have depth. I don't wanna waste an hour and a half of my life on something predictable. Anyway, Kari Wuhrer is a good actress, and she does a good job playing the "chosen one" handpicked by the angel Simon himself as the personal guardian of the Lexicon. Meanwhile, she's being pursued by the demon Belial who wants the book. Belial jumps from body to body in the quest for the book. Not only that, Satan himself is actually on Earth trying to track her down, but in this case, he wants to protect her and the book (for his own selfish reasons of course). Either way, I suggest that you watch the Prophecy:Forsaken immediately after this one in order to get the whole story. It's explained in that film why she was chosen, and why Satan aided in the protection of the guardian.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing!!.......2005-11-06

Being a big fan of the Prophecy series, I was extremely disappointed with this movie and the one after (Prophecy:Forsaken). All the elements of the first two and even the third film were missing. Where was the creepiness or angelic awe in this film? Christopher Walken was great in the first three but I don't even think his presence in this film would have made much difference.

      4 out of 5 stars surprisingly good!.......2005-10-26

I had mixed feelings about these further Prophecy sequels when I first heard about them. I was a big fan of the first three movies and of Walken's Gabriel. The original trilogy seemed like it would be a hard act to follow, but I'm very happy to say that Prophecy 4 & 5 are surprisingly good sequels. Prophecy fans should give 'em a shot.

3 out of 5 stars CONCERNS WITH DOCTRINAL TRUTHS!!.......2007-05-21

I must admit that I found these movies to be very enertaining and visually stunnning. Good art work and good consept. You now.. the spiritual battels and all... BUT I have my concerns when it comes to depicting accurate Biblical turths about demons and angels. Like angels sinning or that the demons seem to MAKE the humans sin. Also the lach of scripture. I love the concept but if we remove God frome the piture, even a picture with angels in it, we bring God down and make him no more than a tool for human use not the Lord of all creation.
I urge Parents to deeply consider how these movies water down the truth and the implications that that may bring.

We used these cartoons in our church and our kids watch them constantly at home. When we showed them they seemed to interest kids ages 4 to 13. The music is awesome and the message is fantastic. We highly recommend all three Angel Wars episodes and we hope they come out with more soon.

All three episodes should be in every DVD home (and public) library...in the world ! This is not an exaggeration. These three titles are THAT good! Clever, creative storylines that inspire, encourage, and embolden--AngelWars are more than a cartoon story taken from between the lines of Scripture, they are a unique "behind the scenes" look at the spiritual battle being waged day and night for the hearts and souls of all people. If this sounds "schultzy",
than don't take my word for it--buy all three for yourself and see the "other world" that collective creative genius Team Angel Wars has created. You will watch it again and again.

Wow! I had seen the DVD on the shelf for weeks and thought it was just another weak, wanna be children's video. Boy was I wrong! This tape is packed with action, adventure, character building lessons and fun, fun, fun! But I wouldn't recommend it for children under 6 (maybe even 8)One last star would have been given for more scripturally accurate dialog. Over all, I'd buy the second one as well.

      Description

Legendary director Cecil B. DeMille takes on the historical saga of Joan of Arc in his first great spectacle. Following in the epic footsteps of D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation," DeMille's "Joan the Woman" was produced as a road-show special production with a huge budget for the time. The story follows a British officer in World War I who is inspired by a vision of Joan when he finds her decayed sword. The film then takes us back to her leadership of the French Army and eventual burning at the stake, complete with a cast of thousands, cinematic beauty and the imagination that DeMille would become famous for in this timeless historical spectacular.

This 1916 production is DeMille's first big spectacle picture and lays the groundwork for his most famous work in later decades, and it already has many of the DeMille hallmarks: grand battle scenes, impressive sets and dramatic performances by the principal players. "Joan the Woman" is a fairly accurate historical account of Joan of Arc, with the addition of a romance between Joan and Englishman Eric Trent to add deeper emotion and drama to which the audience can relate, as well as another intriguing aspect to make the film come to life and have relevance in our time: placing the story of Joan within the story about a World War I soldier faced with a suicidal mission and in need of saintly courage like that of a martyr, Joan of Arc. By far the bulk of the picture is about Joan, beginning with her first vision of an angel and hearing her calling, to her burning at the stake as a witch. Joan is portrayed superbly by the multi-talented opera singer Geraldine Farrar, (who also wrote songs and a few books) and I can't imagine anyone else playing the part of Joan better than she did. While not possessing the usual slim figure we are used to seeing in our heroines, Farrar's stout figure is perfect for the part Joan of Arc took upon herself, namely dressing as a man, a soldier, and leading the French Army to victory. Her gestures and serene face express the holy side of Joan, and I found Wallace Reid, a popular actor of the times, in the role of Eric Trent also a perfect choice. Apart from performances, there are many images that DeMille captures to express a mood or idea, and overall this is a beautiful, artistic film; in my opinion better than most of his later big spectacles. The picture quality on this DVD is wonderfully clear, and near the end we are treated to some special colour effects for the flames that engulf Joan at the stake. For such a grand picture I imagine an orchestral score would do it proper justice, but the organ accompaniment is the actual 1916 score and has all the necessary variety to emphasize the moods and dramas in the film. "Joan the Woman" is no doubt an important milestone in Cecil B DeMille's career, as well as in the development of the film industry; "Joan the Woman" competing with other big epics and directors such as D. W. Griffith and "Intolerance". Apart from having an important place in the silent film era - and in any good silent film collection - "Joan the Woman" would also be significant to anyone interested in history, particularly Joan or Arc.

4 out of 5 stars Jeanne d'Arc in the service of WWI propaganda.......2003-12-05

In 1916 a british soldier volunteers for a suicide mission. Jeanne d'Arc appears in his dreams and announces that he should right the wrong he committed against her. This soldier is apparently the reincarnation of Eric Trenet who raided the village of Domremy where Jeanne, a robust peasant girl saved his life and fell in love with him. Charles VII, the rightful king of France idles in the shabby court of Chinon and has not even enough money to pay the butcher. England & Burgundy employ the "Spider" to pamper and amuse the king while their armies lay siege to Orleans. Jeanne obeys her "voices" and appeals to the king to let her command his troops. In the battle of the towers she liberates the besieged city of Orleans. She is hailed as a hero, but the spider summons the mad monk to cause her downfall. Eric Trenet is taken as a prisoner, but she saves his life for a second time. At Rheims, Jeanne prevents the disloyal bishop Cauchon from poisoning the king but the web is tightening. The mad monk and the spider defame her as a witch. The english king orders Trenet to trap her. She has the vision of a black horseman and feels that her end is near. On her way to Compiege she is captured by the british. Trenet becomes a count but he feels ashamed. The monk and the bishop rejoice. They pray canting for her soul. The Spider dissuades king Charles from paying her ransom.

She is put on trial as a witch. In a travesty of justice she is brought to a torture chamber and the mad monk threatens her with a white-hot rod. In her fear she is willing to revoke and put on women's clothes. But bishop Cauchon lets the worst ruffian in her cell. The priests observe with lip-smacking delight trough a peep-hole how this drunken man molests her. When she puts on men's clothes again the bishop pronounces her a relapsed heretic and announces her sentence: burning at the stake. Even the mad monk repents. She has the vision of an angel and wins strength from her faith. King Charles and his retinue live high and carouse. The public sqare where the stake is constructed becomes a fun-fair. Trenet prays: God forgive us, we burned a saint. The british soldier volunteers to carry a bomb behind enemy lines because he realizes that, since the britsh are responsible for Jeanne d'Arcs death it is their duty to help France...

If the message seems forced it proves nevertheless that Cecil B. De Mille had an imagination. This film is famous for its special effects: double exposure (for the visions), colorizing. The fire has the color of fire and so have the seachlights in the war scenes. The acting is very good. Geraldine Farrar was a famous primadonna (She was often Carusos partner). Her performance is rather flamboyant than subtle, but this makes sense: her Jeanne has leadership qualities. Best of all: Raymond Hatton plays the weakly king in a kind of early Woody Allen performance. The baddies - the Spider, the monk, the bishop - are excellent. But not everything is perfect in this film. The first half consists of a seemingly endless series of battle scenes. De Mille had the command over thousands of extras, but they stumble pellmell over each other. Compare this with the masterful arrangements in Eisenstein's films. Excess alone is not art! If you appreciate opulence and high production values, De Mille is your man, but if you prefer the psycho-drama, then Dreyer's LA PASSION DE JEANNE D'ARC is the better film.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Joan of Arc of the screen.......2000-03-10

Well, though having watched Milla Jovovich as the new "Joan of Arc" in Luc Besson`s film a few weeks ago (although it is very good) no other treatment of the story comes as close as this 1916 masterpiece, which stands up as one of the first true epics in cinema history. You may wonder about the melodramatic storyline and the propaganda input into the movie when glorifying Joan of Arc as the saviour of France even 600 years later from the German enemy, but these scenes are more than made up by the typical DeMille treatment, involving grand scale battle scenes, beautiful sets for the time, a great performance by opera diva Geraldine Farrar (very holy) and a rousing organ score which will certainly haunt you even after seeing the movie. A movie that certainly rivaled "Intolerance" for the title of the greatest movie in the 1910`s. And a scene you certainly won`t forget is the moving climax when Joan is burned as a saint ... shot in an unbelievable beautiful done hand-colored scene that shows everyone the almost magical power of the silent screen. Certainly one of Cecil DeMille`s best films, even in this early stage of his career.

3 out of 5 stars The usual stuff.......2005-10-05

Those familiar with Japanese soft-porn will fell right at home with this unexceptional title. Those whom are uninitiated will be caught a bit off guard.

At a high school in Tokyo, several of the female students have been moon-lighting as prostitutes. A teacher catches onto this fact and goes about putting an end to it. Things go awry when he discovers he turns into a sex demon with tentacles whenever he gets aroused (huh)? He turns from savior to vilifier, poor prostitutes school girls.

There are some deaths but no blood or gore. The sex scenes are a mix in the bag; some are pretty good, others are short and uninteresting. This is nudity aplenty and the material is definitely on the odd side, but fans of the anime will find it too tame to warrant continued interest.

      2 out of 5 stars It's live action alright.......2005-09-30

but the action, horror or sex-wise, is not very lively. Very disapointed in this tame and uninteresting low-budget exploitation flick. The gore, special effects are minimal and so is the nudity and sex. The greenish cover with the girl on all fours with tentalces around her is arguably the most exploitive thing about the entire film. There are some cute Japanese girls and a scene or two of note maybe, but that just means it's worth a rental at best. With a poor film and no major extras, a purchase is not recommended. For something a little more explicit, gruesome, and weird, try Entrails of a Beautiful Woman, if you can stomach it that is. As for Angel of Darkness(#1), I say skip it and save your money, time, and energy.

Note: I don't know if the rest in the series are as bad, as the first one was poor enough to make me not bother with the others.

3 out of 5 stars Wheres that grain o salt?.......2007-06-03

Fans of the manga will no doubt need it. It was hard to watch and enjoy this without noticing the obvious differences from the manga. Still when I approach something that is derived from a video game or comic. I completely forget everything I know about it and watch the movie as a movie. Therefore, I pretty much enjoyed Battle Angel. The story really didn't appeal to me but the action made up in some ways. I didn't care too much at all for Gally's high pitch voice. Anyway, if you never read the manga than you could enjoy this short anime. But those who cant erase the manga experiance from their minds will most likely hate this anime. Its 2 short, yet entertaining episodes. Due to some strong language and gore, I wont say its recommended for kids. I dont think its worth 20 bucks but if you cant find it cheaper than check it out. If your looking for some cyber punk anime I think you should give Armitage a try.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing .......2007-03-25

Bone Fox's review is pretty close to how I feel about this anime. I am also a die-hard Battle Angel Alita fan and this attempt to convert the novels to an anime is a joke.

Too much of the story is left out. For example, the first face off between Alita and Makaku where Alita suffered a defeat, which in turn leads Ido giving her the berserker's body (which plays a massive role in book 5). Makaku's past and how he came to be was left out and replaced with him receiving help from a made up character that was never in the novels. Another massive mistake was leaving out the "small fights" between Alita and Zapan which later leaves to what is know as "the point of no return" in the series. There are other big mistakes and holes in the story. To type them all would lead to about 3-4 pages long...

I agree with Bone, if you have never read the novels, you may like this anime. If you have read them, this anime will make you sick and wish that it never came to be. I truly hope James Cameron can do the movies that he is planning to do and do them right and stay true to the novels. I know Cameron is a big fan of the series, but I am worried he may already be making the mistake of wanting to cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ido. Arnold as Ido...it doesn't fit...

      2 out of 5 stars Depends.......2005-08-16

To begin, I am a die-hard fan of the Battle Angel Alita manga. When I first saw this 'episode' of the Battle Angel anime and the anime version of 'Tears of an Angel' I was very disapointed. I agree with the offcial reveiw that it is impossible to translate Yukito Kishiro's extensive manga into an animated format without losing the incredible artwork. However, the loss of the story is what disapointed me the most.
I feel that the depth of the original plot is simply cheapened in the anime. The main villian (Makaku in the manga) has been replaced by a simple "brain eating gladiator". The intense scenes where Alita attempts to save Koyomi from Makaku are completly left out. The anti-hero Desty Nova, who plays a significant role in the later books, is also missing.
If you have never read the manga, you may enjoy this.
If you have read and enjoy the manga, you may want to save your money.

5 out of 5 stars A horrific sci-fi story about violence and love!! .......2005-03-25

      Good:
      * Intense blood and gore.
      * Deep storyline (easy to understand).
      * Cool character desing (so look alike to the anime in Kill Bill).
      * Great action scenes with good animation (there were like 3 or 4 action scenes).

      Bad:
      * The graphics were kind of smudgy.
      * Sad story.

The story is simple because is about this robot girl called Gally who want to become an assasin for hire so she can get a better life but later the problems become more complicated.
This anime is not those who seeks for action-packed, this is more like a violent movie but is still a classic and very recomended for anime fans.

P.S: The english dub was GREAT but way to overacted at times, I think the voices were better than the acting but is worth to hear, so don't pay to much attention to the other people because is not THAT bad. In fact! this is one of the best dubs I ever heard since Princess Mononoke and Twilight of the Darkmaster.

      Adios!

5 out of 5 stars The universe manifests.......2004-04-06

      Unique, beautiful, and well story-lined.
This is number one in my anime collection. Just about every bad review gotten for this movie was because of people who read the manga and therefor had major bias since a movie will just about never be the way you pictured it would be from reading it.

      Joy, love and peace.
