This film contains graphic violence and brief nudity.
Known as Gunnm in Japan and then Battle Angel Alita to Western manga readers, Battle Angel (in all of its incarnations) is now part of the canon of Blade Runner-inspired anime cyberpunk.
The film version follows a "Hunter Warrior" and cyborg healer named Ido. Ido formerly lived in the floating land of Zalem (Tiphares in the book), the paradise that hovers over the refuse heap of Scrap Iron City in which he now resides with his former lover, Chiren. In his travels as a bounty hunter (killing spine thieves in a world in which human nerve tissue has become the most precious commodity), Ido one day discovers and repairs the remnants of a cyborg whom he names Gally (Alita in the manga). Though possessing the body of a young woman, Gally embodies Ido's most sophisticated and lethal cybernetic skill. In the first episode on the DVD, "Rusty Angel," Gally challenges Chiren's own creation, Greweicia--a brain-eating gladiator--to a death match. In "Tears Sign" Gally discovers that her first love, Yugo, has put himself in the employ of the spine trader Vector so that he can earn his way, he thinks, to Zalem. Gally confronts her fellow bounty hunters to protect Yugo, only to watch him horribly wounded in a plot to capture her for Vector.
Yukito Kishiro's finely detailed line drawings in the original manga (like a cleaner version of Miyazaki's style in the Nausicaa books) are impossible to translate into film. What the film loses in detail, however, it makes up for in its intense action sequences and shadowy mixtures of color and a darkly cinematic soundtrack. Anime fans should be prepared for some pretty graphic violence--including some horrific scenes of decapitation. Also, the action keeps the plot moving at breakneck speed, so character development often seems to happen in leaps; you'll want to read the books to learn more about Gally/Alita and her world.
For English speakers, the DVD is best watched in the original Japanese with subtitles. The dubbing seems to raise the pitch of everyone's voice, changing the mood of the film from tragic-cool to slightly comical. Gally's English is especially annoying. With her original Japanese voice (sometimes childlike and sometimes a seductive whisper), she is a perfectly deadly heroine with a leather-clad style that anticipates The Matrix. --Patrick O'Kelley

In the cactus-studded Mexican backcountry of the 1860s, a surly drifter who could easily be mistaken for the Man with No Name becomes protector and lethal helpmate to a red-haired nun wanted by the French for aiding the Juarista revolutionaries. Essentially a two-character showcase for the newly stellar Clint Eastwood and what was beginning to seem the poststellar Shirley MacLaine (subbing for Elizabeth Taylor), this sardonic study in testy collaboration, mutual deception and distrust, and slightly creepy sexual attraction is highly rated by a fairly small number of critics--chiefly, one suspects, for the dual-auteur cachet of having been directed by Don Siegel and based on a story by Budd Boetticher. Others deem it an undersauced spaghetti Western and find that the stars grate on the viewer as well as each other. Cinematography by the great Gabriel Figueroa is some consolation, but... if only Boetticher had been allowed to direct. --Richard T. JamesonCustomer Reviews:

It seemed like a pretty good career move, and for the most part it was. Demi Moore will never top any rational list of great actresses, but as her career stalled in the mid-1990s she had enough internal fire and external physicality to be just right for her title role in G.I. Jane. Her character's name isn't Jane--it's Jordan O'Neil--but the fact that she lacks a penis makes her an immediate standout in her elite training squad of Navy SEALs. She's been recruited as the first female SEAL trainee through a series of backroom political maneuvers, and must prove her military staying power against formidable odds--not the least of which is the abuse of a tyrannical master chief (Viggo Mortensen) who puts her through hell to improve her chances of success. Within the limitations of a glossy star vehicle, director Ridley Scott manages to incorporate the women-in-military issue with considerable impact, and Moore--along with her conspicuous breast enhancements and that memorable head-shaving scene--jumps into the role with everything she's got. Not a great movie by any means, but definitely a rousing crowd pleaser, and it's worth watching just to hear Demi shout the words "Suck my ----!!" (rhymes with "chick"). --Jeff ShannonDescription
Demi Moore (DISCLOSURE, INDECENT PROPOSAL) is in top form in this action-packed hit! Moore stars as gutsy Lieutenant O'Neil, the first woman ever given the opportunity to earn a place in the armed forces most highly skilled combat unit -- the elite Navy SEALS! But the already brutal rigors of training camp turn into an unimaginable test of courage and determination once it becomes clear that no one -- powerful politicians, top military brass, or her male Navy SEAL teammates -- wants her to succeed! A critically acclaimed triumph directed by action hitmaker Ridley Scott (ALIEN, THELMA & LOUISE) -- you'll cheer for G.I. JANE as this brave soldier proves she belongs among the best of the best!Customer Reviews:

The hardworking Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball star in the urbane and witty Forever Darling, a 1956 romantic comedy, made at the height of the couple's popularity as co-stars of I Love Lucy, about the difficulty of forging marital harmony. Arnaz plays unpretentious, visionary chemist Lorenzo "Larry" Vega, whose passion for working on a powerful chemical insecticide for the benefit of humankind means little to his wife, Susan (Ball). A creature of high society, Susan is conflicted about her destiny. Should she be concerned with acquiring a bigger house and socializing with the right people, or should she follow Larry as he takes his insecticide on a two-year field study in tropical jungles? Attempting to guide her toward the right decision is a dapper, guardian angel, who happens to take the form of James Mason because Mason is Susan's fantasy man. The script by Helen Deutsch (I'll Cry Tomorrow) indulges I Love Lucy fans with plenty of slapstick set pieces plugged into an extended camping scene. But there's also some flashy banter--Arnaz is very convincing putting well-heeled snobs in their place--and a very clever sequence in which Susan imagines herself as the heroine in a movie she happens to be watching. (A movie starring, yes, James Mason.) There's a fun, special feature in which Arnaz and Ball take time out from production on their television show to plug Forever Darling and reveal the secret of a truly happy marriage--and then get into a beef. --Tom KeoghDescription
A lot of things can test a marriage, but Lorenzo and Susan Vega have unwittingly put their five-year union to the ultimate test: they go camping. And Susan's guardian angel, seen only by Susan, joins them. TV's I Love Lucy was in its fifth season when this romp gave fans more reasons to love its stars. Desi Arnaz plays Lorenzo, who heads for wide-open spaces to test his chemical company's new product. Wife Susan (Lucille Ball) goes, too. And soon we're all headed for comedy chaos built on tent-raising, forest critters, inflatable rafts and other typical elements of roughing it. There's one atypical element: the angel (James Mason) who wants to rescue their troubled union. Marriages may be made in heaven. But the details are worked out here belowCustomer Reviews:

Description
Legendary director Cecil B. DeMille takes on the historical saga of Joan of Arc in his first great spectacle. Following in the epic footsteps of D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation," DeMille's "Joan the Woman" was produced as a road-show special production with a huge budget for the time. The story follows a British officer in World War I who is inspired by a vision of Joan when he finds her decayed sword. The film then takes us back to her leadership of the French Army and eventual burning at the stake, complete with a cast of thousands, cinematic beauty and the imagination that DeMille would become famous for in this timeless historical spectacular.Customer Reviews:
Early Cecil B De Mille at his best!.......2005-06-21
Jeanne d'Arc in the service of WWI propaganda.......2003-12-05
She is put on trial as a witch. In a travesty of justice she is brought to a torture chamber and the mad monk threatens her with a white-hot rod. In her fear she is willing to revoke and put on women's clothes. But bishop Cauchon lets the worst ruffian in her cell. The priests observe with lip-smacking delight trough a peep-hole how this drunken man molests her. When she puts on men's clothes again the bishop pronounces her a relapsed heretic and announces her sentence: burning at the stake. Even the mad monk repents. She has the vision of an angel and wins strength from her faith. King Charles and his retinue live high and carouse. The public sqare where the stake is constructed becomes a fun-fair. Trenet prays: God forgive us, we burned a saint. The british soldier volunteers to carry a bomb behind enemy lines because he realizes that, since the britsh are responsible for Jeanne d'Arcs death it is their duty to help France...
If the message seems forced it proves nevertheless that Cecil B. De Mille had an imagination. This film is famous for its special effects: double exposure (for the visions), colorizing. The fire has the color of fire and so have the seachlights in the war scenes. The acting is very good. Geraldine Farrar was a famous primadonna (She was often Carusos partner). Her performance is rather flamboyant than subtle, but this makes sense: her Jeanne has leadership qualities. Best of all: Raymond Hatton plays the weakly king in a kind of early Woody Allen performance. The baddies - the Spider, the monk, the bishop - are excellent. But not everything is perfect in this film. The first half consists of a seemingly endless series of battle scenes. De Mille had the command over thousands of extras, but they stumble pellmell over each other. Compare this with the masterful arrangements in Eisenstein's films. Excess alone is not art! If you appreciate opulence and high production values, De Mille is your man, but if you prefer the psycho-drama, then Dreyer's LA PASSION DE JEANNE D'ARC is the better film.
