Kosuke Fujishima's delightful Oh My Goddess! began as a manga in 1988 and was made into a five-part OAV in 1993-94. Fujishima used bits of Western mythology for his offbeat romantic comedy: the three sister-goddesses are based on the Norns, the Fates in Scandinavian legends. Keiichi Morisato is a familiar anime type: a short, skinny nerd at the bottom of the pecking order. One afternoon, while he's stuck in his dorm taking phone messages for his older classmates and trying to order lunch, the lovely Belldandy appears and declares she is a goddess who will grant him one wish. Convinced she's part of an elaborate prank, Keiichi asks her to become his girlfriend forever--and is dumbfounded when she grants his wish. Her presence gets him kicked out of the all-male dorm, so they set up housekeeping in an abandoned temple. What should be an idyllic existence is soon complicated by the arrival of Megumi, Keiichi's kid sister; Urd, Belldandy's voluptuous older sister; and Skuld, her sulky younger sister. But despite the contretemps, the bond between Keiichi and Belldandy only grows stronger. Keiichi, like Tenchi or Akito in Nadesico, is initially unprepossessing, but his maladroit exterior conceals a genuinely kind heart. Perhaps because she's a real goddess, rather than a magical girl, Belldandy never whines or grows smarmy; she remains a warm, gentle presence. Voice actors Scott Simpson and Juliet Cesario offer sensitive performances that add to the series' charm and good-natured comedy. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up for minor nudity and occasional risqué humor. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars A must see!.......2006-08-18

At first I didn't expected much. So should you, as it the first chapters the plot is too much about Keiichi daily problems, but wait! It does get better. Watch it until the last chapter, and you may notice, as I did, a story where true love is painted in all its colors. Love completely selfless. This move touched me, and I hope it touch you as it did to me. Totally recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Good for fans of the series, but there's more out there.......2006-05-13

I remember when I first heard about Oh My Goddess. At the time, the movie was not released, and there was only the manga and this OVA available. Because the manga was not yet out in my area, I purchased the OVA. It's a good way to sample what the series is like, and a good way for a newbie to decide whether or not they like it. However, in comparison to the manga and the new anime series out, it's very tiny and only gives you a glimpse into a much bigger world.

Anyone who is well-versed in anime knows the basic set-up, even if they have never seen or read anything of Oh My Goddess. College student Keiichi Morisato dials the wrong number and winds up with a goddess, Belldandy, offering to grant him a wish. Thinking it's a prank, Keiichi declares he wants a beautiful woman like this goddess to be with him forever. Belldandy grants the wish with the slight misinterpretation that he specifically meant her. Yet the Almighty has spoken, the contract is made, and Belldandy is stuck on Earth with Keiichi. However, Keiichi lives in an all-male dorm, meaning no girls allowed!

Such is a summary of episode 1 of the OVA. In episode 2, older sister Urd invites herself over to help heat things up between Keiichi and Belldandy. In episode 3, baby sister Skuld shows up, who is not pleased with the idea of sharing her beloved older sister with a mere mortal.

This first volume is mostly comedy with some sweet, romantic moments. And for a love story, Oh My Goddess can be rather tame, but still emotionally driven. But as a device that merely retells something that the manga and new anime series are already portraying, it can be rather dull. If you have already read the manga or have seen the anime, you won't really miss out on much. You may even be bored with it. But if you're a die-hard fan of the series, you will like it, or at least want to add to your collection.

This OVA is a good way to gauge whether or not you're into the story. If you are, I recommend looking into the manga or the anime, as well as the movie. Creator Kosuke Fujishima created a vast world with more than these 4 main characters and their lives, some characters that I like more than the goddesses and Keiichi. You can also see a great deal more character development than what can be done in a 5-episode OVA.

But the OVA is a cheap way to start, and could be a big money saver than investing the manga or anime series.

1 out of 5 stars I'm the only one to rate this 1 star, so far.......2006-04-22

If you like shojou anime, this really isn't the anime for you. I just don't understand why everyone is calling this anime "romance". There is absolutely nothing romantic about some pathetic loser in between 3 beautiful goddesses. Sure, there is love, but it's from the male point of view. Belldandy comes off to me as a sort of airhead, which I can't stand. There are much better animes out there trust me. What's so great about watching an anime where one ugly boy is surrounded by gorgeous women? Fushigi Yuugi is the best shojou, one girl surrounded by bishounen like guys. Well, most anyway. I didn't like this anime because I thought it was just another male-type fantasy. Would never spend another penny on this junk. I'd rather set my own fantasies, like being Tohru on Fruits Basket or Tsukushi on Hana Yori Dango. There might be romance in it, but I don't like it, it's just my opinion.

well i love it! its cute but only like three episodes. i heard there's a tv show for it now in like japan, and they're selling it now on amazon. i love belldandy's character and voice over though, its soo perfect. ahh overall, belldandy makes it. it's only great because of her. seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Romantic Comedy.......2005-05-24

I really enjoyed this show. A 5-episode series spanning over two volumes of DVD. A college student Keichi Morisato is surrounded by three goddesses Belldandy, Urd and Skuld after making a mistake call to the Goddess Help Office and a contract with Belldandy. The show is very romantic and heart-warming with comedic relieves from Urd and Skuld. Both volumes of the DVD look like having their video sourced from a Laser Disc transfer. It has some rainbow effects and slight color bleeds in certain scenes. Although the video department is lacking, the show itself is golden. I wish the studio could acquire the new, fully remastered transfer from Japan for a future release. Anyway, as I said earlier, the video artifacts are not overly distracting and by all means get both volumes to enjoy the show now.
