These four discs constitute the first broadcast season of the well-liked Dungeons and Dragons-style farce The Slayers. Red-haired Lina Inverse has a typical anime heroine's hot temper and insatiable appetite for food but also a rare talent for swordplay and casting powerful spells. As she roams from town to town, she acquires a cadre of able but quarrelsome companions: Gourry, a big, blond, dumb knight; Zelgadis, a once-human chimera who practices shamanic magic; sorceress-in-training Amelia, who makes Gourry look bright and Lina appear graceful; and the shrine maiden Sylphiel. Together they make short work of the hordes of bandits, golems, werewolves, trolls, mercenaries, and evil spirits their enemies send after them. They also have to face some more formidable foes, including the wizard Vrumugun, ace swordsman Zangulus, and archsorceress Eris. But the greatest threats come from the exceedingly powerful Rezo the Red Priest and the Dark Lord, Shabranigdo. All Lina's adventures involve a lot of slapstick humor, but these episodes have a more carefree tone than the later feature and the OAVs that paired her with the overendowed Naga. The convoluted plot lurches and stumbles along, much the way Lina fumbles around after getting clobbered. Although the fate of the world is supposed to hang on the outcome of these adventures, the broad comedy prevents the various episode directors from creating much suspense or a sense of menace. The Slayers is featherweight entertainment, but one that has won many fans in both Japan and the United States. Some viewers may object to the jokes about a mincing gay dragon, Lina losing her power at "that time of the month," and the many wisecracks about her being flat-chested. Japanese filmmakers and audiences clearly have different standards of what qualifies as PC humor. "Suggested 13 Up" for violence, profanity, brief nudity, and sexual humor. --Charles Solomon

I enjoyed the first one more.......2007-03-23
Some say this is better than the first season. To me thats not true. This season is full of humor, action, and good stories. It starts out introducing a couple of new likeable characters. The thing about Slayers that I like the most is that it actually succeeds at being funny. The character development gets alot better. I just felt the main villians couldn't fill the shoes of Copy Rezo. The stories are good but they kind of missed the mark somewhere in the middle on the second disk. The stories started to pick up with a very deep plot on the last disk when the Demon King Gaav and Hellmaster was introduced. I almost want to give this a 5 but I just didn't enjoy it the sameway. Still this season is very good and Slayers is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The dvd collection I purchased is 3 dvd's with extras. And I got it a hell of a lot cheaper than what these price gougers are offering. But hey, its Slayers. You really can't go wrong with this series.
BEST SLAYERS YET!.......2005-12-29
The Slayers Next is BY FAR the best of the entire series! It has More laughs then the first season...not that i don't like the first season...This DVD boxset has better special features, like an interveiw with the english voice actors (except Gourry) The Slayers Next has more of an interesting plot...in my opinion, you don't have to see the first season in order to understand this season, it might help though, they don't re-develop the charactors! DO NOT WATCH THE SLAYERS TRY WITHOUT WATCHING THIS SERIES, just a bit of info. Half (or more...lol) of the series leaves from the HUGE MAIN PLOT, and has a little plot of their own...like Brass Rackets, or the one where they are looking for a legendary spell. Some have a plot that takes two to four episodes to complete, like the one in the begining, or the Prince Phil one etc... So, this is the best out of the entire Slayers Seasons in my opinion. The Slayers Try is a little dissapointing, so if you want to leave of on this series, you should although, there are a lot of laughs in it.
Slayers Next........2005-09-07
This series never ceases to make me laugh. It is one of those ones I buy the box set of randomly when I see it at a good price (hey, they used to go for almost $100+).. and I always wondered why I didn't buy it sooner.
Very good for a laugh.. and I love this series.
Two Words....Giga Slave.......2005-06-19
I have to admit that this is probably one of the better series in the Slayers Trilogy. Rejoin Lina, Gourry, Amelia and good Ol' Zelgadis in another adventure of twists and turns. What makes this story so unique is you have a 'god' like character a.k.a. Xellos who constantly gets under Lina's (and our) nerves. Also a rival by the name of Martina who through the entire series tries to get the best of our Firery Red Haired Sorceress. Episode after Episode they mock Both Zelgadis and Lina to further enduce plot, even some old characters make a cameo in the series. The only thing I found a bit of a disappointment was how it ended. You keep a steady pace of comedy and realism, then it just becomes realism with small splashes of comedy. However the ending is what cleans it up real nice. Two more words....Brass Raquets.
The Greatest of Slayers.......2005-01-20
Let me start off by saying that Slayers is truely a work of pure gold. When I began watching the second season I was instantely absorbed in it. With the constant comments being directed to our leading lady Lina Inverse and her brainless body gaurd Goury Gabriev, Slayers is a anime that truely captivates a brilliant mixture of action, comedey and romance and molds these genras into a amazeing work of art. If you have seen the first season or you want to see just a bit of what the slayers anime series is, then I highly suggest Slayers Next. The series is much more fluid and crisp then the first season, but don't get me wrong, the first season was awesome to its just that the second season was better.
All and all the slayer series is just a fun anime that any person can enoy if there into magic, sorcery, and a whole lot of slapstick comdedy that will have you sprawling on the floor gasping for breathe.

No Naga The Serpent; Story is Bland........2007-05-13
I love the new Slayers. Naga The Serpent, genuine demons, all sorts of great DVD movies out there. But honestly, this isn't the best of Slayers by any means. I watched them all of once over the past three years. Tenchi I've watched a dozen times, Cowboy Bebop a good 20 times and the rest of my anime are always in my DVD player. This one? Not so much. I advise against it.
It's not funny and it's a chore to watch, but at least the animation is of the same quality.
great stories, great action, and comedy that is actually funny.......2007-03-20
When it comes down to amazon reviews concerning anime, I've learned to take a real deep breath while I'm making a purchase. Certain reviewers make wild claims on the so called "greatest animes of all time" and I left wondering, what the hell did I just watch?! This is the reason why I dont take most reviewers serious anymore. This right here is the kind of anime I love, not that bulls*** I gave 1 and 2 stars to and love to hate. Slayers I purchased this on the blind tip. I have to say this is one of the only anime that trys to be funny and actually succeeds. At the same time the stories can maintain a level of seriousness. And all of the characters are well developed and very likeable. I enjoyed all of the stories. From the slapstick humor to the evil demon threatening to end all humanity.
Slayers takes place during the times of swords sorcery, demons and monsters. The main character Lina Inverse is a powerful young female sorceress with an attitude. Her purpose is to rob thieves and give to herself. She meets other characters just as skilled as she is and a clumsy swordsman that suffers from severe A.D.D. Some of the stories are stand alone episodes which consist of someone wanting a rampaging dragon killed or an evil sorceress trying to marry off her daughter to a prince and grab his loot. Then some of the series has something to do with stopping a mad sorcerer from resurrecting a demon. The battles are very good and when the stories start to get serious it can truly grip you. I watched the entire 26 episodes in oneday.
Now I noticed some of the reviewers mentioned defects in the product. I cant speak on this one. I purchased the 3 disk import version. Which has all 26 episodes, with extras and the option to switch languages for under 30 bucks on another site. In fact I purchased the entire collection for way under 100 bucks. I haven't seen any defects of any kind yet. It has clear picture and the sound is perfect. As far as the japanese language is concerned. I never watched it and I never will. I could careless about that. I'm happy with what I have. I would give info where to purchase this but all the price gougers would buy the s*** up and sell it for 50 to 100 bucks. Anyways, this is a great anime. Quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Good...but one of the discs i got was corrupted........2006-07-29
I was able to watch Eps. 1 and 2 and part of Ep. 3 before disc A stopped working. It seems to be corrupted from that point on until the end of the first disc. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem with their discs. It was this way when I recieved it new from Amazon.com. I need to know where I can find a copy of Disc A again, or if someone's willing to loan me a copy of that disc, that works.
Otherwise, it's a great series. It would get five stars from me if the disc wasn't messed up when I bought it from here.
The Slayers ROCKS!.......2005-12-16
The Slayers Rocks!! It is the best show in the world. It is about a red headed badly tempered girl named Lina Inverse who meets a DUMB guy named Gourry. They fight and fight and fight... get captured, betrayed, and finally an independent man named Zelgodis comes in.The they kill a guy named Rezo the red priest who turns into Shabranigdo (Spelling-??????)then i calms down... Then Somebody puts a price on their head, then they meet a JUSTACE FREAK named Amelia, who likes them, hates them, and likes them again in one episode! Then then they do stuff, and find out who put a price on their heads, Eris and Rezo. I thought they killed Rezo, but then you find out about copies. Opps... A gave a little away in this review, but i left out all the humor, laughs and unneeded episodes that ROCK!!!
The Best Anime + Villian!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-25
I LOVE THIS ANIME!!!! I first saw this show 2 years ago, somewhere on episode 11. I thought it was funny and well paced, with quite a lot of magic action. The main character is Lina, a cute, but bad tempered, rude, obnoxious, always hungry, flat chested 15 year old(someone has issues) who meets a dumb as a rock swordsman who is skilled in his art Gourry, the silent depressed chimera Zelgadis, and the crazy justice freak, Amelia. As I stated before I started on episode 11 and missed the Shabranigdo arc. During the show I wondered who was this Rezo guy was they were talking about. Then in Episode 18 my questions got answered. I saw the best anime villian up to date!!! Copy Rezo!!!! He was evil sacrastic , powerful, cool, and just looked awesome!!(yeah i obsess about him) and his death scene was very tragic. So from there, this series went from okay, to number 1!!!! The Japanese Cast is BRILLIANT, especially lina's Gourrys',and (gasp) Copy Rezo's :and the Subbed Version is actually enjoyable, the voices fit their characters. This anime rules, the first season is the best, has great animation, storyline, humor, battles, characters, and COPY REZO!! Great voice acting Koyasu Takehito, and Peter Davis!!
Pros- Animation, Characters, Music, Storyline, COPY REZO

Please Dont Try Again.......2007-06-11
Next to Slayers and Slayers Next this chapter is nothing at all. In fact this is the only one I didn't watch continuous. I came into this expecting exactly everything I saw from the first 2 but it seemed more of a rehash and it was just... there.
It's like they took no time at all to put this one together. The general plot isn't as captivating this time around. The comedy is alright at best and the side stories that give you a rest from the general story are just dumb and have a very low entertainment value. The new characters both good and evil were mediocre at best. Only Valgaav and his tragic origin actually added any real substance to the story and kept me wanting to see what happens next. Then later on its the same formula. Skip the main plot and a bunch of side stories which is mostly skip material.
Well I agree with the other 3 to 1 star reviewers saying this is a sad addition to the series. A certain character was mentioned and you wondered why the mere mention of that characters name sent around so much fear, but that character was never introduced. The last 5 maybe 6 episodes saved this from being a total dud. I recommend this ONLY if you must complete your collection. I cant stop repeating how this final chapter pales in comparison to the previous 2.
Pretty bad.......2006-08-21
Basically a rehash of the first two Slayers series, with the gang embarking on a quest to thwart a demon-dragon demi-god named Valgaav, who has a blood feud going on with these golden dragon guys and was a servant of Gaav the Demon Dragon King. However, the 3rd entry in the Slayers TV series lacks the charm and comic timing of the two previous series. By this point the novelty had pretty much worn off and the over the top nature of the characters and humor was more annoying than actually funny. A sad end to the Slayers TV adventures.
Sad Cunclusion to Great series! (Sad Ending).......2006-01-03
I have always LOVED The Slayers and The Slayers Next since i was little!! I used to watch them every Sunday on The International Channel, along with Dragonball Z, znd GT. So, this boxset has less special features, and it has Breeze (slayers try opening) when the DVD loads, and the menu pops up, it was scary the first time!! The plot got kinda complicated at times, and i REALLY HATED XELLOS in this series, he seems more EVIL, not as nice like in the slayers next, when he just screwed with their lives to get a laugh, in the slayers try, he agrees that he will (try) to kill Lina Inverse!! I did not give anything away there. The ending is soooooo sad though, i don't understand it either. The Slayers Try is more involved with the plot, not as many random episodes, although the humor is still T-RIFFIC. Amelia almost swears! Zel is even more evil and independent (evil as in people call him evil names, and he loves it) Gourry is even dumber! (the more the series, the dumber he is!!) and Lina has um... not really changed at all since next! You meet Filia too. The bigining SUCKS! but give the show some time, it will soon get better.
P.S. You learn a lot about Luna Inverse...(Lina's Sister) in the second episode and on! I just wish that you could see her!!
It all comes to an end.......2005-06-19
If you enjoyed Slayers...and you enjoyed Next...then you MUST have Try. As always it starts off a little slow but thankfully the comedy kicks in. Not all of the episodes are long drawn story based, you get a few back and forth that just make you sit back and enjoy. Also a special feature at the end which lets you meet the cast. The only thing I had noticed is if you didn't watch all of the previous installments it may be a little bit confusing. All in all I found this very enjoyable and at the end you're left with satisfaction that is' finally over.
Slayers Try!! Love it or Hate it. Hey it's Slayers .......2005-01-14
Ok, so the 3rd season of Slayers is a little lame, but I found it to be as funny as Slayers Next. Slayers Try finishes off the Slayers series which was very funny from the start. Who would have thought this series would last 3 season and spawn several movies and a special or two. Slayers Try brings an end to a series that could have gone another season or 2. Linna and Gorury are back so is that rougish Xellos and the rest of the gang for one last season. Here we are caught in the middle of another monster trying to take over the world. Xellos role is less but I really thought it should have been in less in Next. His tag line is "That a secret" is missing from this season. This tag line was Xellos's only saving grace. This season could stand without him all together. Not going really tell you everything but keep an eye on the sword of light. That's it for now kiddies. If you like Slayers you will like Try. IF you haven't seen Next Try will be very confusing to you. Hey the movies are great as well. Naga keeps Lina on her toes in the movies just like Gourry keeps Lina on her toes in the series.
