This wacky sci-fi comedy-adventure originally aired in Japan from 1993 to 1994 and was followed by a 10-part original animation video. Justy Ueki Tylor bridges two Japanese traditions: he begins as a common anime type, the endearing dolt, but develops into the drunken, wise fool of Zen parables. As war erupts between Earth and the Raalgon Empire, Tyler enlists in the United Planets Space Force because he wants "an easy life." Through sheer dumb luck, he resolves a hostage crisis involving a venerable admiral and wins a promotion to captain of the Soyokaze, a broken-down battle cruiser manned by a crew of misfits. His bumbling successes bring Tylor to the attention of the 16-year-old Raalgon empress Azalyn and her trusted lieutenant, Captain Ru Baruba Dom: he wins the heart of the former and the respect of the latter, along with the affection of his crew. Although Tylor's adventures are played for laughs and clearly aren't intended to be taken seriously, there are some major holes in the plot. The filmmakers introduce questions and subplots, ranging from a scheme to usurp the throne of Raalgon to the fate of the previous captain of the Soyokaze, that are left unresolved when Tylor and his crew blast off for new adventures. Captain Tylor lacks the no-holds-barred nuttiness of Nadesico but will appeal to fans of comic space adventures. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon

An epic saga with a bumbling lead........2006-06-25
I heard a lot about this one and had high hopes for it. I was expecting something along the lines of Outlaw Star, but with more camp and parody along the lines of Excel Saga thrown in. What really happens is you get a serious drama, led by a bafoon along the lines of Jack Tripper or Frank Drebin as the lead. And this could have worked so well, and it did on some levels, but there is not enough resolution. I loved the antics of the marines and the pilot (why there was only one starfighter pilot seemed odd to me). I loved the fact that the enemy was actually a competant enemy and that the stakes were actually high, and lives really on the line. But it annoyed me that Tylor really was an idiot, and never got it, even in the end. Once the climax actually came, he never became more then he was to start with, and so many people were disapointed and love lost. In the end, I felt as if it were all for nothing, but I understand this was only the beginning and much more of the series follows. But I don't know if I have the faith in Tylor to invest more into the series, because of what I have seen so far. I feel like one of the disapointed crew of the Soyokaze.
Famous Captain Tylor.......2005-02-04
I've heard a great deal about this series prior to viewing it. After watching the whole series I can understand why Irresponsible Captain Tylor had accrued so many fans. It's just plain fun to watch with a interesting cast of characters that are easy to like. The animation is old so don't expect anything special in that department. Story wise the show isn't terribly exciting or funny but manages to tread inbetween. There's nothing really special or outstanding about this series in particular except for the characterization of Captain Tylor. It's unfortunate, but Irresponsible Captain Tylor is beginning to show it's age. Compared to today's anime it pales in comparison.
The packaging for this boxset is pretty disappointing. The 4 DVDs come in a flimsy paper DVD case. The discs are plain and they don't come with any kind of insert.
Fly me to the Moon..........2005-01-08
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor series is just what it's title suggests. Tylor joins the United Planets Space Force. Why? Because they will pay him and feed him and he won't have to do anything. Tylor is truly irresponsible. Or is he? As the series unfolds, and war comes to the universe, we follow Tylor in his adventures, as he becomes a Captain of a old ship and a mis-matched batch of unwanted soldiers, pilots and crewmembers.
Is he really irresponsible or is he the only person who happens to be sane and comfortable with himself? This is as much sci-fi as it is philosophy and I really started to enjoy it - but then is ended. Lucky for me, there is a OVA and, I believe, a few movies. I plan to grab them.
26 episodes and OK for most ages. Crispin Freeman at his best - he's Tylor's English voice and it sounded like he REALLY enjoyed it.
Ranks High.......2004-12-06
Cowboy Bebop, the Slayers, Tenchi, Giant Robo, Evangelion, and Vision of Escaflowne (TV series) are some of the best anime series I've come across--Irresponsible Captain Tylor ranks right up there with the best of them.
A great anime.......2004-04-21
Captain Tylor is the best anime I've seen since Cowboy Bebop. And it is just as good!
