The skillful blending of drawn animation and computer-generated imagery excited anime fans when this science fiction mystery was released in 1995: many enthusiasts believe Ghost suggests what the future of anime will be, at least in the short term. The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when an unnamed government uses lifelike cyborgs or "enhanced" humans for undercover work. One of the key cyborgs is The Major, Motoko Kusanagi, who resembles a cross between The Terminator and a Playboy centerfold. She finds herself caught up in a tangled web of espionage and counterespionage as she searches for the mysterious superhacker known as "The Puppet Master."
Mamoru Oshii directs with a staccato rhythm, alternating sequences of rapid-fire action (car chases, gun battles, explosions) with static dialogue scenes that allow the characters to sort out the vaguely mystical and rather convoluted plot. Kusanagi's final quote from I Corinthians suggests that electronic evolution may compliment and eventually supplant organic evolution. The minor nudity, profanity, and considerable violence would earn Ghost in the Shell at least a PG rating. --Charles Solomon

The television movie Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society (2006) continues the adventures of the cast of Stand Alone Complex, the TV series based on Mamoru Oshii's watershed feature. It's been two years since Major Kusanagi left Public Security Section 9 and struck out on her own. Batou pursues only investigations that interest him. Togusa is in charge of the Section, largely by default. All three characters, plus Chief Aramaki and the Tachikoma robots, join in the investigation of a string of suicides by agents of a foreign general. The trail leads them to a terrorist plot involving micro-machines created to release a deadly virus, and to the master-hacker known as the Puppeteer. The depiction of a corrupt politician using resources earmarked for the care of an aging population for his own ends reflects recent scandals in Japan. But Solid State Society feels derivative. The plot borrows heavily from the "Laughing Man" storyline, and the general lack of inspiration is evident in the failure to resolve the mystery satisfactorily.
The Limited Edition includes a music CD and a second DVD of extras, among them notes on designing the futuristic vehicles in the film, and an interview with Mitsuhisa Ishikawa of Production I.G., all packaged in a metal box. (Rated 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

Surely they could've done better..........2007-07-02
Ghost in the Shell's success has always been a bit of a fluke, as it was to be Appleseed that was Shirow's magnum opus. I really wanted to like Solid State Society, I really did, but just found it to be very lacking.
The first season of Stand Alone was amazing, as it managed to capture some of the feel of the comic: counter terrorist ops fighting terrorists and drinkin a cold one afterwards. Second season was passable, grasping at straws to develop characters meant to be nothing more than a talking head or plot device, plus the inclusion of a Mary Sue villain.
Still, I'd hoped that all the money that the GitS property has made studio IG over the years could've produced something better than what was essentially an almost two hour episode of Stand Alone with at most three minutes of amazing action animation.
Had they simply retold the classic Puppet Master story from the comic using the Stand Alone characters, it could've been a much better movie. The further GitS breaks from the original source material (specifically the original comic run), generally the weaker it becomes. I can't help but think that by borrowing more heavily from Man Machine Interface (particularly the whole rogue Motoko and Motoko's split consciousness bit), Solid State Society lost the potential to be an action packed thriller to wrap up the series in a hail of gun-fire and car chases. It all felt rather unsatisfying.
After the unyieldingly convoluted, pandering, and nearly unreadable debacle that was Man Machine Interface, I hope, as a Shirow fan, that the Ghost in the Shell franchise can be laid to rest with some of its dignity in tact; a solemn procession that should not end with a 21 gun salute, but rather a crudely drawn Batou going colon "d" while firing a miniature shoulder mounted rocket into the air.
Argueably the Best GIS yet.......2007-06-16
Not since they pulled out the concept in the first GIS movie that the build up of information at nodes in the sea of information could result in a self maintaining/regulating entity have I been so blown away by an idea in an Anime film. Batou, Togusa, and the whole gang are on the job, but where is the Major? Some hard hitting criminal is up to something with people dying or disappearing or simply just being erased from the sea of information. The Major is missing AND their is a new criminal about, who could it be?
Well, this film take political science fiction to its height, and also does very nicely with the technology and action aspects. And the ending is friggin phenomenal. Sure the GIS has always been wonderful with its ability to paint the world in shades of gray, or at least to say that sometimes the black is the better choice over the white, but in this story, the viewer will find it impossible to make a judement call on which side was fighting for the greater good.
BTW, watching these movies in English is pathetic because they choose voices that seem appropriate for Children's Cartoons. Be serious, GIS is absolutely not for children, if, IF, they can comprehend the concepts being thrown around, there is no way they can actually appreciate them.

I saw this movie for the first time on Sci-Fi Channel's Ani-Monday. I was getting ready to call it a night when this was advertised as being next and had to stay up and watch it. It's a very well done movie with a lot of feeling of the first movie that was brought to the series. Alot of things have changed, alot of feelings are different, but it's all very good. I think I saw an edited version but for the most part it was very well done. All the original cast has returned to do the voices so there's no problem with the english subtitles or with dubbing. Overall it was a good movie.
True to the Series.......2007-06-11
This film is one of the best things that I have seen come out of the GITS franchise. I have watched the movie several times, each time enjoying even more. I would give a description of the plot, but I will not ruin it for you. My only complaint about Solid State Society is that it borrows ideas from both of the feature-length movies. If you liked GITS: SAC, and most specially 2nd GIG, you will enjoy this movie.
Note: It is dubbed in English, unlike Innocence. Amazon just has that fact incorrect
awesome.......2007-06-10
i downloaded a torrent of the jap version of this and im still buying the english dvd. the premisie is prettty simple a computer master mind is getting bots to kill them selves. over all an exelent movie, while not as visually stunning as innocence it raises the bar in terms of storytelling. if u pick this up you will not be dissapointed.

Delving into a detailed universe..........2007-05-28
Solid State Society is hopefully a sign of what is to come in the world of Ghost in the Shell. After Stand Alone Complex's 2nd GIG, I was definitely left with a slightly bitter aftertaste. The pacing of the 2nd GIG felt uneven and the story felt more convoluted than tastefully complex, creating an adequate but not perfect addition to the GitS series. However, Solid State Society takes the best from the Stand Alone Complex series and in little under two hours presents a story as rich in detail and as lovingly complex as the series preceding it.
A huge plus of the movie is that instead of feeling like an overstretched episode, it feels more like a long arc of quality episodes stringed together while still feeling cinematic in its presentation. Solid State Society gives us everything we expect in a GitS story: a sci-fi universe that draws you in but never overwhelms, continuity in character development, rich and intelligent dialogue and plot that almost seems plausible down the road, and of course, some light philosophy and shades of grey. Even if you aren't an anime or a strict sci-fi fan, you might just enjoy this one.
Another Star in the GitS Series.......2007-05-17
This series just keeps getting better. Unlike the abysmal Cowboy Bebop movie that killed the franchise, Ghost in the Shell in all it's incarnations are well-thought out, engaging, topical, and state-of-the-art animation. Solid State Society is no different. It's all the little things that matter to the animation team from deep character development to the smallest of drawn detail.
Although I've only seen the Japanese DVD version, I assume the usual cast of American voice actors will be along for the State-side release (and in a way, I prefer them... the Japanese Motoko, while I'm told sounds like a traditional "sexy mama" voice is pretty darn husky), so the production value should be spot on.
Don't listen to that guy from San Francisco. I love the Tachikomas. If fact I bought the model and put one together myself. It's sitting here on my desk keeping my Talosian figurine company. My wife has the big plush version sitting on her desk as well. Hee Hee.
Much better than the serials .......2007-05-17
I assume that Production I.G. finally got tired of padding screen time with trite exposition and inane one-off subplots that contribute nothing to the story, as this film does away with all these things that so plagued its made-for-TV predecessors. The production values are nowhere near the levels of the last GITS theatrical release, but the story is at least as focused and drives straight ahead throughout. Taken at a distance, the plot seems somewhat derivative--there are child abductions (just like in "Innocence") and a mysterious computer network based consciousness known as the "Puppet Master" (sounds a lot like "Puppeteer") driving people to kill themselves ("Innocence" again), but the similarities are fairly inconsequential once you actually get into the story.
There are also far fewer squeaky voiced robots pontificating tediously, which is always a plus. Those kinds of things work OK in the sidebars of comic books, but translated into film... Ugh... I often felt as though the viewer's intelligence was being insulted by the television serials, but never felt that way at any point in this more streamlined offering (though the music is often intensely silly). Kudos to the writers for growing up. Boo for Bandai's delays and choice of cover art--it's not 1988 anymore, kids. Put the airbrushes down.

The 2002 broadcast series based on Mamoru Oshii's landmark film Ghost in the Shell (1995) takes place in a parallel world, where Major Motoko Kusanagi didn't vanish into The Net. Although its production values are lower, and director Kenji Kamiyama never matches Oshii's inspired camerawork, Stand Alone Complex does an impressive job of recreating the setting and characters. With the help of the other officers from Public Security Section 9, Kusanagi moves through a deadly city of mecha, cyborgs, humans, and human-prosthetic hybrids. Batou emerges as a more complex and compelling character in the TV series than he was in Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence: He engages the other characters, instead of endlessly quoting philosophers.
Politics and cyber-espionage collide in a somewhat tangled plot that centers on the pursuit of The Laughing Man, an über-hacker whose pseudonym is linked to J.D. Salinger's 1949 story of the same name. The master cyber-criminal leads Kusanagi and Batou into a web of murder and deceit involving bogus cures for "cyberbrain sclerosis" and corrupt government ministers. In the secondary story, the Tachikomas, crab-like robots used by Section 9, develop personalities and an awareness of their existence. The Tachikomas recognize some of the implications of their growing consciousness, but their childish voices--modeled after the performance of Japanese actress Akiko Tamagawa--sound odd discussing philosophical questions. Not surprisingly, the story ends with Kusanagi, Batou, et al. tackling a new case that leads into the 2nd Gig. (Rated 13 and older: considerable violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews:
A series that heralds the future of the internet.......2007-03-17
I stumbled on Stand Alone Complex completely by accident. I'd seen both previous films, and this new series caught me completely by surprise. With notable exceptions (Battlestar Galactica, Six Feet Under) this has more emotional and intellectual depth than almost any Western series you can think of. Every episode subtly and delicately raises important themes that are worth serious discussion and consideration.
But those themes won't be palatable to an audience if it isn't packaged in an eterntaining form - which this series is. It has everything - some great action sequences (the Terrorist takedown in the first episode), terrific character development (name any of them), and a standout kickass musical score. The score by Yoko Kanno deserves special mention, as it runs the gamut from 'cyberpunk techno'(sic?) to beautiful orchestral melodies. And the main themes for the series are serious attention-getters - one of the best I've ever heard.
All the characters are vividly drawn and beautifully realised. The DVD Boxset has both the original Japanese voices, as well as the English dub. It's fascinating to see the differences between Atsuko Tanaka and Mary McGlynn's rendition of the main character (Major Kusanagi). The Japanese voices emphasises the philosphical and intellectual issues being raised. While the western dub makes the characters more friendly and approachable. It lends a fascinating slant to the series.
The pace is much slower and more langurious than what action- or anime- fans are used to. As a casual viewer, that's just fine by me. It gives the viewer more time to digest the important concepts being raised, and also a chance to appreciate the tone and atmosphere of the amazing world that is being woven before our eyes.
There are a few films that have touched me intellectually, and there are a lot that have affected me emotionally and viscerally (LOTR, Doctor Who, Star Wars Original, Star Trek, etc...). Stand Alone Complex is the only series that has touched me on both an emotional and intellectual level. I absolutely love and adore this series. Strongly strongly recommended for the open-minded viewer looking for emotional and intellectual stimulation from their film and TV viewing.
Pretty good collection.......2007-03-08
I'll try to hit as many good and bad points without adding spoilers. First of all, I dont own this boxset so I dont know if theres any additional merchandise with the boxset itself. I bought each dvd individually as they came out, because thats how into this series I was. This series to me is alot better than the movie. The episodes are well thought out and intelligent. Not all the episodes are actionpacked but the ones that are do deliver. Some of the episodes do tend to drag though. The character development is alot better this time around. Some of them even get their own episodes to crack a case. The tachikomas started out kind of annoying to me at first. They grew on me later. Especially when they got their own episode. Usually I dont touch the animation in regards to a show. For the simple fact, if the story is lackluster, the characters are lame, then animation is the least factor. However in this, the visuals are beautiful and the soundtrack is great to. If you liked the first Ghost then I highly recommend this one. Even if you did'nt like the movie, I still advise you to pick this up. It really is a lot better.
All around, great.......2007-01-22
I like Adult Swim stuff like Robot Chicken & Aqua Teen, which is how i found out about this anime since it was airing on Adult Swim. I DON'T like many other animes, I just find that after watching a few episodes of other animes the stylistic stuff can't hold the series up on its own, which is usually when i notice the plot/themes arent all that great.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is completely different in that aspect. It does have top notch animation, music, and voice actors, but it also has amazing plot lines and themes. You can watch this anime over and over just like a good movie.
I would highly recommend this anime if your a fan of action/drama.
Side Note: After watching this and also watching The Matrix (the movie) it's a wonder how the Wachowski bros got away with taking so many stylistic stuff as well as other things from this. Granted, this anime borrows some things from classic movies like Taxi Driver.
This is a good series........2007-01-10
If your into Anime or even not really into Anime you will love this series. This anime cartoon series is filled with action, drama, and mystery. I would not recommend it for anyone under the age of 13.
A masterpiece of anime.......2007-01-07
There are a few pieces of Anime work that really stand out, Ghost in the Shell, Gundam Wing to name a couple. Very few animes make a great tv series, but this one is a masterpiece. It covers about every subject concerning humanity and the line between it and the machine age the story is set in possible. It also does not hold back on the money for the top notch animation during the show with lush details and vibrant backgrounds throughout the show. From the start of the show to the end you never really know what is coming and even if you think have it figured out, the writers throw a massive curveball at you. I won't ruin the story for anyone, but I will say it is one of the most well written pieces of work I have ever seen. If you have never seen Ghost in the Shell, I think you will still enjoy the series from start to finish.
In short, amazing story combined with awesome animation makes this a must have for any anime fan.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite anime movies.......2007-06-12
From the cutting edge animation (at the time it was made) to the more than just blow crud up story, I've always felt this to be one of the most superior pieces of science fiction ever produced.
Meditative viewing.......2007-06-05
This film suffers from the comparisons it attacts. It was heavily plagiarised by the Matrix films in terms of its visual presentation and some thematic elements, but differs to it in all other parts. Where one is a very slick adolescent action film which pretends to be philosophical, the other is an entrancing audio-visual feast which engages your subconscious in a very unexpected way. Ghost in the Shell fits better next to films like Kubrick and Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Scott's Blade Runner, in which the story, although interesting, is ultimately secondary to the experience of the film itself.
From its opening credits, with its sparse pounding percussion, haunting Japanese choir, and subtle electronic tone, set against the dream-like and utterly entrancing android 'birth' on screen, engages your eyes, ears and mind in an entirely primal way.
The animation, in a word, is astonishing. The combination of digital imagery is truly subtle and masterful, rather than bashing you over the head with its digital achievement. The film revels in its details, small things which go unnoticed but register with the subconscious. The main character, in her android 'shell', never once blinks throughout the film, her inanimate 'doll-like' elements managing to de-sexualise her often nude body/shell. The gorgeously rendered reflections and lights, as well as imperceptible movements of backgrounds create an entirely dream-like world which has lost its sense of human identity through its merger with the machine. The viewer feels the same mental detatchment throughout the film, and engages in an almost spiritual experience, which is thematically social as well as personal.
It won't be everybody's cup of tea. If you came to this film from the Matrix, there's a good chance you'll hate its lack of constant action sequences. If you come to it from a purely anime-loving background, you'll love it if you enjoyed mentally stimulating and willfully experimental anime like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Mindgame, Catsoup, Memories, or Akira. You'll definately hate it if you're a fan of the empty genre-anime such as Naruto, Final Fantasy or Full Metal Alchemist. But if you're looking for a filmic experience which transcends its genre and demonstrates some unsurpassed animation of the highest possible calibre, look no further.
This dvd release is good, though not excellent. The 5.1 surround-mix in English is fantastic in its scope and enhances the experience but the english dub actors are atrocious. I don't know what it is, but english dub actors cannot emote, and speak with the same monotone 'i'm-reading-a-script' voice that anime-watchers have come to know and despise. The Japanese 2.0 stereo is okay but really could have benefited from a 5.1 mastering, especially considering the Japanese voice-actors are excellent. There is a relatively satisfying 'Making of' featurette on this dvd, including interviews with most of the creators/actors/artists involved on the project, as well as a decent overview of the technology and techniques used in the films creation.
Try another .......2007-04-13
Bluntly said Ghost in the Shell is ok. It's not spectacular. The premisis is normal for cyberpunk, the art is brilliant at times horrible at others, the voices are ok but far too quiet, and the nudity felt too tacked on and there was much too much of it. You should check out Stand alone complex before you resort to this. BTW for a special edition they don't put that much special stuff in, and the packaging is horribly annoying and impossible to handle.
Ghost in the Shell .......2007-04-09
A great anime and a must for anyone (not just anime fans). A great sci-fi plot, great character development, and wonderful graphics.
I would also suggest checking out Ghost in the Shell SAC (Stand Alone Complex) at [...]
Not for everybody and I'm one of those everbodies.......2007-03-05
If your the type who loves the kind of anime. That has action every 5 to 10 mins. A cool soundtrack consisting of metal music to get the vibe going. Or a few characters here and there that provide sometype of comedy relief. Then stay far away from this. For some people Ghost in the shell could very well be the beginning for total extinction of sleeping pills. The director's idea was definetly to make you think. And he does a very good job at it. I'll admit the very first time I saw this I did think it was cool. But I tried to watch this again, and I realize this doesn't stand the course of time for me. To me a 4 or 5 star show must be something I can keep in my collection and watch over at any giving time. I cannot do that with this. Without a doubt it is a very intelligent anime and I completely understood the story. It's just the way it was put into action and after 20 mins. I have to watch something else that moves with a faster pace. I'm not saying this is a horrible anime by any means. If your the kind of person that must see action regularly, there is a chance you may not enjoy this.

Mamoru Oshii's landmark Ghost in the Shell (1995) largely defined the cyberpunk genre and influenced the Matrix films in the U.S. The long-awaited sequel continues the adventures of Batou, Major Kusanagi's former assistant, who was left behind when she disappeared into the cyber-realm of the Net. With his new human partner, Togusa, Batou investigates a series of bloody murders involving gynoids, robots with sexual functions. The case leads them to the headquarters of the Locus Solus company, where Batou uncovers the evil secret behind the creation of the gynoids. Innocence includes some staggeringly beautiful CG images, especially a parade depicting characters from Chinese mythology. Oshii contrasts this glittering beauty with a Blade Runner-esque dystopia. But even his skill as a director can't disguise the fact that the underdeveloped story and flat characters are far less interesting than the opulent visuals. (Rated PG-13: graphic violence, violence against women, brief nudity, profanity, alcohol and tobacco use.) --Charles Solomon

Could have been amazing.......2007-06-13
Visually stunning. Great strory. However, this is about as bad of a job as I've ever seen in putting a DVD together. I've seen better fan subs.
Don't waste your time........2007-06-09
The original Ghost in the Shell was an unusual film. Occasionally difficult to follow, exquisitely animated, featuring a very subtle use of digital animation technology, hauntingly minimal music, a totally unique vision of our near future, and a profoundly affecting experience. It perfectly blended the alienation and isolation of an increasingly mechanically-dependant culture with an individual identity crisis. It also featured some excellent and original action sequences, but the film was overall a philosphical questioning and a subconciously engaging visual feast rather than an action anime.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, is by far a lesser film. Even standing alone, this film is substandard, and I'm utterly shocked its gotten as high a rating as it has. In terms of animation, the garish digital settings completely fail to cohesively interact with the 2d characters. Unlike the original Ghost in the Shell, which cleverly disguised most of its digital animation through its selective use and painterly renders (mostly using it for soft zooms and other effects not possible with traditional animation), this sequel really just mashes together the 2d and 3d elements, with most scenes resulting in flat 2d characters floating around in an unconvincing 3d video-game environment. Except for the wonderfully animated Basset-hound in the sequel, the 2d animation is also also a severe drop in quality from the meticulous and pain-staking detail of its predecessor. The only place the 3d animation really excels is in the scenes in the delicatessen where Batou's cybernetically enhanced brain is hacked and his vision begins to disintegrate, but it is not enough to rescue the otherwise empty animation effort. Simply compare the opening credit sequences of the two films, where one is haunting and cohesive in its unique vision, the other is flashy and overly clever and unconvincing.
The story of the sequel is difficult to assess. It starts by promising more of an action-packed story with a potentially more engaging plot. The original was intentionally never focused on this part, instead using its story-elements to present its visual/auditory messages, the characters would find a lead, then lose it, and not pick it up until the very end of the film. The end climax was a personal act of will rather than an important plot climax. The search for the 'Puppetmaster' in the original film was secondary to the Major's questioning and self-doubt in her mechanical body. The sequel initially promises a more 'clinical' story, trading off an emotional engaging story with a mentally engaging one, or rather, a more predictable detective story. However, at about the point where the two investigators visit the coroner, the concept begins to fall apart as it attempts to straddle the 'detective' story and the same emotional territory from the first film. From that point on, the film either swings from ridiculously corny action sequences to insincere and overly concise discussions on the nature of reality. The original film also showed this dichotomy, but its motives were entirely different. In the original, the discussions were sincere and self-questioning, without any of the sheen of an overly scripted conversation. The Major was a woman of great physical power with a deep-seated questioning of her own reality. In the sequel, they attempt to rehash the same territory with Batou, a man of great physical power with no such personal questioning. As such, all of the conversations seem like the characters just like to hear themselves talk. The action in the original was exciting while remaining utterly wierd and symbolic, the final action sequence featuring the Major fighting a tank in the nude with her bare arms and destroying her body in the process. In the sequel, Batou uses huge guns to mow down hapless rows of Yakuza, then engages in a ridiculous hollywood kung-fu fight with a cyborg. The sequel is action for action's sake. As for characterisation, the main character Batou shows promise very early on, especially the wonderfully affectionate scenes with his dog, but then disintegrates into a tough-guy-with-a-gun not too long after. The other characters aren't worth mentioning.
The music is entirely a dissapointment. Both films feature the same musical composer, Kenji Kawai, but the sequel seems to be an overly clever re-hashing of the same themes in the original film. The Japanese choir, so alien and harsh in the first film has been watered down to something more melodic and otherwise uninteresting, the minimal sound-scapes have been replaced with some overly clever instrumentation, and the simple but affecting drums from the first film have been switched with action-packed drumming. The mood has shifted to flashy instead of primal, and becomes entirely unappealing in the process.
Anybody expecting a hypnotic and subconsciously stimulating dream-like film worthy of its predessor should stay well away from this film.
Ghost in the shell 2 Innocence.......2007-05-14
not worth the effort to watch a real let down too bussy reading the english sub title, planing to send back the dvd
Great so long as you can stand the English subtitles........2007-05-13
This sequel to the highly acclaimed original Ghost in the Shell is grittier than the original. Reminds me more of a Shadowrun anime than the "cartoony" stories you're likely to find in much of today's anime. It's a great story, though not as compelling as the original...it is definately a must see for fans of the series.

There's no time for Section 9 to recover though, because soon the threat of a nuclear weapon has the entire city of Nagasaki evacuated. Section 9 must then rush to the scene and determine the true origins of the bomb. The government declares Martial Law, and sends in the Self-Defense Forces to restore order. Ghost in the shell........2006-12-04
Would have been 4 stars if it wasnt only 3 episodes.
Philosophically heavy sure, but then thats GITS.......2006-08-06
The entire GITS universe, whether it be the original manga, motion pictures, or the adapted TV series, are all heavily philosophical so I'm not sure why the last reviewer bothers to complain. These next episodes set up the confrontations later with Kuze to illustrate his true intentions as a radical reformist but needs the cover of a terrorist to strike fear into the government. The episodes are consistent, driven, and well acted so I can't see giving this less than five stars. If you're not able to unweave the philosophical web of dialogue that GITS (or The Matrix) lays before you then I suggest you find a brainless action film that the general public is used to having explained for them...you'll only get frustrated with this kind of complicated thinking.
IS IT REAL OR IS IT ATOMIC?.......2006-08-03
As Volume 6 opens Batou finds himself pursuing and confronting Kuze by himself in an attempt to capture him and the plutonium he just recieved. But did he really get the plutonium or was he cheated in the deal? What does it matter, because the Japanese government cannot ignore the threat and take a chance. Kuze plans to use the plutonium to arm a bomb with which the refugees can blackmail the government for their independence. Even if it's a fake, Gohda will still be able to use the situation to start a war against the refugees. The Major and Section 9 must find some way to tie in the nuclear device to Gohda and CIS unless they want to be the fall guy like in the first season.
You would think the last episodes of a show would be the best, but this sixth volume of 2nd Gig suffers a bit from a talking head disease which had been kept relatively in check for most of the season. You could have just taped the audio and listened to it and got the same experience as watching. It's like three episodes of Keanu Reeves' conversation with the designer of the Matrix in Reloaded in which you only comprehend about 20% if what is said. With only one more volume to go, hopefully the final episodes will be a return to form for this show. The only interesting bit from these episodes is that Motoko is beginning to understand that Kuze is someone she knew in the past. Someone that was very close to her. The origami birds that Kuze leaves behind are clues.

GITS is perhaps my fav. anime of all time. and this dvd is perhaps the best of them all. of course you need to see the rest of the sieries to get to this dvd, but let me tell you. once you get here. it was all worth it! I've been known to just watch this dvd over and over with out bothering with the rest of the sieries.
not like any of the other dvds are bad though....
good series.......2007-03-15
I was scared when i heard that Ghost in the shell would be animated. But if you love the original movie you will love the continuing back story here!
Inspirational.......2007-01-20
Most animes are not inspirational. That doesn't mean they're not good, they can be really good but to be inspirational is yet another optional step to connect with a certain audience. The reason I like SAC 2nd Gig is because there is really no one "bad guy" that must be vanguished for the world to make sense again and morality to be reinstalled. The world never makes sense from the very beginning, and it continues to be enigmatic up until the very end. Some people would call this an unresolved story. I call it a genuine emulation of the real world. A world where even though teamwork and communities work hard to bring about a better world, individuals still feel very lonely. Isn't that everyone's real dilemna? Even with so many friends, why are we so lonely? The fact that our behavior is fueled primarily by neurochemical stimulation and plasticity does not make this existential crisis any better. What do we do? Some of us resort to fables and fairy tales to get some sleep at night. Others become megalomaniacs (Kuze, Gouda). Others try to restore (install) some sense of justice to the world (Motoko, Batou and Section 9). Others put all their efforts into worshipping and following a hero (refugees). Believe it or not, some people just withstand it and go on with life disregarding all injustices and just attempting to live a life of comfort and security. (Japanese citizens, Nietzche's Last Man). It is very evident solitude is a key theme in SAC 2nd Gig. It is also evident the writers of this show are very erudite. In a way, 2nd GIG is like a pastiche of real life and various existentialist works (I detected abit of Nietzsche, Sartre, Dostoevsky, and Kierkegaard).
If you're a fan of overthinking plotlines and creating structures and comparisons that never existed in the first place. This is a gold mine. If you just want a good anime, this is also a good anime. But I urge you to let it tickle your brain a little. Let it create a spark.
Amazon mistake, makes me more of a fan.......2007-01-17
I actually bought whole set of 2 Gig, collectable edition, because I enjoy the show and thought of it as an investmet. As it turns out, I was shipped all of 2 gig, except vol. 7, which was actually vol. 7 of the first season. I watched the 1st season for the first time, and really enjoyed it too. It is somewhat different from 2 gig.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, 2nd GIG, Volume 7.......2007-01-05
If you love the rest of the Ghost in the Shell series, than this is definitely a must have. It's a good finish to the second season.

As the second season of Stand Alone Complex continues, it remains edgier and more contemporary than the first. The agents of Public Security Section 9 face a new crisis as the conflict over the status of the refugees worsens: suicide bombers attacking public targets in Japan. Kuze, the would-be assassin of the Prime Minister, whom Major Kusanagi outwitted, is deliberately fueling that crisis. When the Major encounters sinister Kazundo Gohda in cyberspace, the viewer learns the significance of the term Stand Alone Complex. But the most intriguing story development is an apparent digression that hints at the Major's origins. The desgners make increasing use of CG to give the abstract cyberworld a physical reality that is stylistically different from the regular settings. Extras include interviews with animation directors Kenichi Takeshita and Toshiyuki Kono, and series director Kenji Kamiyama. (Rated 13 and older: violence, violence against women, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
Description
After their prior confrontations with Gohda, Section 9 continues their investigations into the man and his mysterious background. At the same time, they must stop a wave of suicide bombers who threaten the peace and safety of Japan. And even when they're off duty, trouble manages to find them, as Togusa finds himself brought up on charges for actions he took while off duty. The Major has troubles of her own as well. On a routine mission to field test some new recruits, she finds herself hacked and recalls a story that seems somehow familiar. Section 9 uncovers a suspicious file that they think is the Individual Eleven virus, and they begin tracking the man who attempted to assassinate the Prime Minister.

Vol. 3 rules.......2006-01-26
Wow this volume of the second gig series is sweet. There is a ton of action in all the episodes and the CG sequences are better than ever. Furthermore, you also finally get clued-in on the majors past and who Goda is.
The sound/music of this dvd is amazing. In these 4 episodes, more so than the last 8, the producers have heavily mixed in some of the best and mostly unheard of, GITS OST music scores- over the action and over the dialogue, making each episode have more of a movie like flow.
Also what's even more impressive is that for the first time, in a long while, you actually get to see a fully CG animated ghost dive.
Now as for the Tachikoma's, they are in full force in this DVD, however, there jobs are a bit different than usual, they get to help the Section 9 crew ghost dive!, yea and there humor is also intact in this volume as well.
As I said before, very impressive for a continuation of the series, definitely a must see
The GIG continues..........2005-12-21
This volume gets right to the heart of the plot, and raises important questions. Who really is Gohda? Where is the next refugee threat coming from? Who tried to kill the Prime Minster, and what roll does he play in the Individual Eleven? Is there a terrorist virus causing another stand alone complex? Can Togusa finds his way clear of criminal charges? Also, we all know The Major, but what of her past?

CAN I CALL YOU MAMA AND PAPA?.......2006-06-22
The first two episodes of Volume 5 are a little bit uncharacteristic of the usual Ghost in the Shell emotional range. In episode 17, the Major travels to Taiwan in search of more info about Kuze, but instead surrenders to her maternal instincts by stepping in between a teenage boy and a local gang war. The next episode features Batou as the main star as he and the Major are taken away from the Kuze case to help an international effort succeed in nailing an infamous terrorist bomber. Batou begins to become attached to a young handicapped girl who mysteriously seems to be looking right at him, even when he's in camouflage mode, which should render him invisible to the naked eye. Even though Kuze was a member of the Individual Eleven, which wanted to drive all refugees out of Japan, it seems he's switched sides now, and is the main driving force of the rapidly escalating insurrection of the refugees. When Section 9 gets wind that Kuze wants to get his hands on atomic weapons, the stakes get dramatically higher!
This series gets better and better, even outshining the first season since 2nd Gig is dealing with an issue that is really upfront and center in the US right now. If you've made it this far, then you'll know just how amazing the writing is on this show. Even after all the years spent with these characters, you can still find nuances in their reactions and be charmed that no matter how mechanized their bodies become, their "ghost" still remains and makes them human, even the Major, whose body is full prosthetic! The art and animation is the best I've ever seen in a TV anime, and you have to marvel at how they pulled off the budget to make it. Classic stuff.
Extras: Interviews with Japanese voice actors who play Motoko, Batou, Togusa, Borma, and the director Kenji Kamiyama.
America's got nothing on this!.......2006-06-03
I'll start by saying all those people who think that american animated series are as good as it gets animation wise have been living under a rock since this series started 11 DVDS ago, and it continues with this volume. As for the episodes themselves, They were a good addition to the season because with the next two discs, everything comes to a head and resolves. Looking back on the four episodes, the only perceivable problem was that there was no real explanation as to why the major and batou were compelled to go to berlin with everything that was going on at home in Japan. This was not enough for a point deduction. At the end of the day, anyone who likes a good series or animation that is technically perfect shoud buy this discs and all of the discs from both seasons. You will not be disappointed.

Product Description
2029 A female government cyber agent and the Internal Bureau of Investigations are hot on the trail of a "The Puppet Master" a computer virus capable of invading cybernetic brains and altering its victim s memory. Created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and codenamed "Project 2501", this 'hacker' is actually a prototype virtual agent which has now defied its makers by seeking asylum within a new host body outside of the electronic net. Now the two agencies must maneuver against each another in a violent, high- tech race to capture the omnipresent entity.
Ghost in the Shell took the world by storm exhibiting a new dimension of anime with unprecedented and mesmerizing cinematic expression. Seamlessly merging traditional cel animation with the latest computer graphic imagery, this stunning sci-fi spectacle broke through the boundaries of mainstream animation with detailed artistic expression and a uniquely intelligent story line. The film has gone on to inspire a generation of filmmakers and has become the most revered anime feature of all time.
Veteran anime writer/director/producer Mamoru Oshii, working in conjunction with the animators at Production I.G. (Blood: The Last Vampire, Kaidohmaru, Kill Bill) brought to life Masamune Shirow s vision (originally serialized in 1991 in Japan s Young Magazine manga). This excellent cyberpunk thriller was co-produced by Manga Entertainment and enjoyed both critical and popular success at the U.S. box office before becoming the first Japanese animated film to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Top Video Sales Chart (August 24, 1996).
