Since its debut in the manga weekly "Shônen Sunday Comics" in 1988 and as an anime series a year later, Rumiko Takahashi's gender-bending comedy Ranma 1/2 has been a popular favorite in both Japan and the United States. The first OAV episodes make it easy to understand why: the stories blend outrageous physical comedy, absurd situations, and likable, obtuse characters with just enough sentiment to keep the humor from becoming mean-spirited. Ryota Yamaguchi's screenplays push the nutty situations to the maximum, and director Junji Nishimura keeps the action moving. School blowhard Kuno hatches a phoenix that looks more like an outsized marshmallow Easter chick than the noble bird of legend: it imprints on Ranma, causing no end of trouble. An enchanted brooch produces 180-degree revolutions in the emotions of Shampoo, the Chinese girl. When she wears the pin right-side up, she chases Ranma harder than ever; when she wears it upside-down, she detests him with equal fervor. A demon escapes after 300 years of imprisonment and possesses members of the cast: Ranma and Ryoga use their martial arts skills to bombard the monster with charms that would recapture it--if they had spelled the magic formula correctly. The filmmakers balance these absurdities with gentle moments that anchor the character relationships. When Akane knits a scarf for Ranma in "Tendo Family Christmas," it looks like it's been attacked by a flock of voracious moths. He happily dons it and hands her a gift he bought with money borrowed from her venal sister Nabiki. Not realizing that Akane's spirit has been trapped in an enchanted doll, Ranma holds it and reflects on the things that make her attractive to him. The warm moments play against the exaggerated slapstick--when Akane punches Ranma, he literally goes flying--and vice versa. Ranma fans will want this three-disc set in their libraries; newcomers will find it an excellent introduction to one of the best-loved anime series of all time. Not rated; suitable for ages 12 and up: minor nudity and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars The best .......2005-11-03

I live in Mexico City and I bought this in an outlet over a year ago at a very cheap price, when I saw it, I couldn't resist...When I was about 7-8 years old (I'm 17 now) Ranma 1/2 was watched by everyone, you could even buy the stickers album; but, my mom hadn't let me see it, she thought it was wrong to let me see a guy who could transform into a fully developed woman. So I bought it, knowning close to nothing of the plot.

I got home, put it on the DVD player, and I COULDN'T stand up until I finished watching, of course that I didn't understand a thing of the relationships between the characters, but I definitelly had enjoyed myself. The episode that I liked the most was 'Akane vs Ranma: I'll be the one to inherit mom's recipies' , that's probably because it's the one that you don't really have to know about the characters.

The DoCo videos were amazing, I HAD to get the cds fast (the videos alone were worth my money). The animation, superb.

What can I say, watching this made me a huge Ranma fan. I bought the series, the movies, the DoCo albums, and most of the manga, even my mom likes it now.

It also introduced me to other of Rumiko Takahashi's stories, Inuyasha (which I liked even more than Ranma) If you like Ranma, you should watch Inuyasha, it's more mature; but both enjoyable in their own way.

I tell you this, it's money well spent, you'll watch it over an over again. If you don't know anything about Ranma, I'd advise you to see the series first, but if you haven't, you won't regret it either, maybe you'll get hooked up like me

5 out of 5 stars Sill Awsome!!!!!.......2005-08-29

This is an excellent edition to the Ranma 1/2 series.
I was actually really suprised to see how good it was considering after season three the show wasn't as good anymore. Not that it got bad, it just lost some steam. But still one thing about the ova's that really impressed me was it's animation..... it's actually really great. Much better than the TV series. The third movie is also really hilarious, but unfortunately it's only 30 minutes long. But it still rocks.
If you are a Ranma fan buy this, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best Ranma you'll find!.......2005-05-22

Fist I want to say that I bought the two disc DvD set, and I had no extras, which made me mad at first, but I am a forgiving person! Anyway all the episodes were good except the third episode, even though I saw Ranma's mom for the first time (I've seen seasons 1-6) It was very... boring at times. My favorite episode would have to be the first one. It was so nice to finally see Shampoo get her revenge on Ranma for treating her like dirt.
Anyway, the opening for the first six episodes was boring, but the opening for the other half, was cool. I liked the song in both english and Japanese, (Though it is louder in Japanese) The ending for both is... ok. Also in the second episode where they do Karaoke, The english is... TERRIBLE! I cannot stand it in english, it's just bad.
I recommend watching the tv serie before this though, because it expects you to know who EVERYONE is. Also, almost EVERYONE is in this. Everyone meaning, the gambling king, Ling-Ling, and Lung-Lung, and all them other people(Even the people from the darn tea ceramony episodes.)
Now, this series does raise some questions. First WHY does Ranma want Shampoo to love him if he "Doesn't" like her? Second (Also last) Why wasn't Hinako in the tv series? She would have been a great character! Now, there are many episodes for fans of Ranma & Akane, and also a little Ranma & Shampoo.(Yay!)
Overall, if you want a great Ranma series, this is a great direction to look!

5 out of 5 stars A third movie!!!.......2004-02-03

I don't own this yet but I will be ordering it soon. One thing I can tell you about it is though that one of these so called OAV episodes is acually a movie. Yes one of these is acually the third movie, it's that the style of it was so simular to an OAV that it is confused with the OAVs alot. You will enjoy this product though because all of Ranma 1/2 is good.

5 out of 5 stars Ranma 1/2 is still the best.......2003-08-22

Here it is, the best Ranma 1/2 episodes of the Ranmaverse. The animation is top notch. Lots of people who see this will probably notice that Ranma's (female) voice is different compared to the others. Another stand out is during the "Tendo Family Christmas Scramble" while the girls are singing karaoke, they sing "Little Date" (the second opening theme) in english, if you know the song, they forget to say the lyrics "Fall in love!", you can also tell because their mouths are moving but nothing is coming out. Besides these two things everything is terrific. Sorry for pointing out a few defects, but I just had to bring it up. Still don't let these little, almost microscopic defects ruin your decision of buying it, it is worth every penny.
