The Television Show Triumphs the Movies.......2007-06-27
I like so many people loved the first Highlander movie, and was disappointed by every effort since the first. I was really happy with how much the Highlander, the Series made the Highlander Universe grow and expand. This first season DVD is excellent. I love the production notes, the Watcher's Chronicles, and the easy navigation. I was really surprise how many of the first season episode standout as really great. I assumed some the first year stuff actually came in the second season. The DVD set is great and it has of course set me on the path of collecting all the other season. It worth every penny if you are a Highlander Fan!!
Highlander review.......2007-06-01
If you like the Highlander series the way I do you will love this set of DVDs which covers the first season of the series 1 at a time. There is also a section of Bloopers which is always entertaining and serves to put the immortal ones in the real spectrum of human beings. There is a section about the watchers which I found good because the watchers didn't appear in the first season so this section allowed me to see something I didn't think I would be able to. Adrian Paul, Stan Kirsch and Alexandra Vandernoot did a wonderful job of portraying a very fanciful idea of life so that I could believe it. Care was taken throughout the series to address the issues that would rise because of the situation of immortality such as what happens when an immortal "dies" and what situations could rise because of the greed of mortals in dealing with the immortals.
This is a great series!!.......2007-05-14
This is something you should have, if you like highlander then this is for you. The menus are great, the format, all the way it's been made is excellent.
There can be only one!.......2007-03-19
Great show. Duncan McLeod is a hero. My scottish fold cat is name Duncan, Duncan McLeod of the clan McLeod there can be only one! Excellent show.
The Beginning of a Modern Epic.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series has to be judged on its own or one runs into problems of continuity that cannot be resolved. On its own Season 1 began an epic journey into the life of Duncan MacLeod, the man who can only die by beheading. This is a story about immortals who hunt each other over the centuries with swords until only one remains.
The series occurred in an interesting time for television. Serial television generally kept a show theme, but each episode was a stand-alone story. During this decade shows (like Babylon 5 that began 2 years after the start of Highlander) proved that viewers were willing to watch shows that had story archs reaching across entire seasons or more. Today it is common to find espisodic television with continuous storylines (e.g. 24, Lost, etc.). Highlander (as other shows of this time) seemed to be a hybrid. Most shows were standard 1 episode fair with the occasional "to be continued" 2 episode arch. But interwoven throughout the episodes one finds storylines that continue to pop up throughout the series lifetime. The cause-effect relationship between espisodes becomes strong with Highlander (and some other television of this time).
Despite many flaws, I have to give Season 1 five stars because it began something great and has a charm and freshness that the latter 5 seasons lack. Episodes from Highlander break down into 3 categories. 1) Good stand alone episodes, 2) Episodes that would be appealing or tolerable to fans but weak on their own, and 3) Episodes better forgotten. The series favored the first two categories, and most of category 3 are to be found in later seasons, especially season 6. Season 1 sets up many characters who persist through further seasons: MacLeod, Tessa, Richie, Joe Dawson, Amanda, and Fitzcairn, to name a few.
Definately worth a watch.

There can be only ONE!.......2007-05-17
Even though they're are two Highlanders. Well, now there's just one(Highlander - End Game). This series is the most compelling, provocative, sci-fi series around. Imagine living FOREVER. Well, only if you can keep your head. Duncan McLeod of the clan McLeod. This immortal is a true warrior. The loss of friends is immense, the price of being immortal. Duncan, Tessa, Richie, Amanda, Fitzcaine, Joe, and Methos.
Unique and fantastic series.......2007-01-28
I'm very big fan of "Highlander" from very small age. I always waited on tv for new serie and tried not miss one. Then it DVD didn't existed yet, so i record every serie on vhs. And now i'm very glad that it's possible to buy it on dvd.
No doubt that in every season have bad and good parts, but still i wanna have them all in my collection, because i grew up with this series and wanna have it all by hand for time when i will wanna watch it again.
Very Much on the Expensive Side Here.......2006-12-17
Excellent series! However, surprisingly, you can get it much cheaper at the "Highlander Store". This is surprising to me because it is not normal that you can get the best pricing from the original sources. It is usually the case that you get better pricing via third party resellers. Regardless of the cost anywhwere, it is well worth every cent! "There Can Be Only One". Better get yours.
Take a good look at the cost.......2006-06-12
I was thinking of buying this for awhile, I have loved the series since it first came out. If you notice the individual seasons are selling at less than $30 each now, if you buy this you are paying twice as much than you should...
Duncan MacLeod, the last great chivalrous hero..........2006-04-26
Duncan MacLeod is the Highlander, born of a race of immortals who can only die if they are decapitated. Duncan has already lived about 400 years and he is always on alert for any other immortals that want to take his head because in the end, there can only be one immortal who will rule the world. This is my all-time favorite t.v. series because Duncan proves that there still are men who believe in chivalry, not to mention a hot body to go with that chivalry! I'm sorry. That is not what makes this series so great, but it does not hurt. Duncan is a complex man and immortal who sympathizes with mortals and struggles with the warrior living inside of him. Not all immortals are like Duncan--most of them try to harm humans because they think they are the superior race. Here are my six favorite episodes:
Mountain Men: This is the episode where Duncan reveals that he is a fierce warrior, protecting his beloved Tessa from an immortal mountain man who has kidnapped her. Duncan fights this immortal shirtless with his long hair streaming down his back. What a visual!
The Darkness: This shocking episode is one where a key character is killed and a secret is revealed about another key character. The tragic ending to this episode is a lessen to all about the random violence that plagues our society.
Brothers In Arms: This is the episode that causes a rift between Joe Dawson and Duncan. Duncan realizes that he cannot truly be friends with a mortal because they are different.
Methuselah's Gift: A different, tender side of Methos is revealed in this touching episode.
Star-Crossed: Roger Daltrey guest stars as an immortal friend of Duncan's. The flashbacks are funny when these two are in a scene together. This episode, however, has a tragic ending.
Archangel: One of the most heart-wrenching episodes of the series. Duncan is tricked by dark forces and does something terrible to his closest friend. This was a shocking season finale and I was left stunned by it.
It was hard to pick my favorite episodes, but these stood out in my mind. Fantasy and Sci-Fi fans will love this series, not only for the fantastical elements, but because of the moral issues also dealt with in this series. The outstanding sword fighting and historical flashbacks are a few more highlights in Highlander, the Series. Highly recommended!

Shocking image quality.......2001-01-19
This review is about "Highlander - 10th anniversary director's cut" only - I haven't seen "The Quickening" yet. You will not find a worse image quality on DVD even if you tried! First, it is appalling to sell a letterbox transfer as "state of the art", as it says on the box. Only an anamorphic transfer deserves to be called that.... The picture is so bad, I truely have seen better looking VHS-tapes. ...The noise in some scenes is so bad, it looks like snowflakes - this cannot be attributed solely to the high-speed film used for some parts of the movie. Diagonal lines are completely torn up by the lack of resolution. There are artifacts of all kinds throughout the movie. It is a shame! The sound quality is very disappointing, too - this is what you get when you try to squeeze a stereo master into the 5.1 format - very unnatural sounds with artificial, reverberated ambience and dialogues. Some very disturbing noise (hiss) is clearly audible, too. I have to use all my discipline not to resort to very personal, R-rated comments about the studio and producers who are responsible for this terrible DVD. Too bad, because this classic movie would have deserved much better.
Just Horrid.......2000-12-31
I was a big fan of the Highlander TV series and finally got around to seeing the movie. Let's start with the movie itself:
The Movie:
The Highlander TV series often not only explored the wisdom that came with 400 years of life but also the heart break of seeing both mortal and immortal loved ones die. This story explored neither. The acting was only so, so -- except for Sean Connery who was excellent.
The DVD:
The 30 seconds of video showing the script edits, letters, etc. were useless on my computer but was sort of a bittersweet delight. I saw what Highlander was originally intended to be according to the writers.
The sound quality was horrible. Since this was actually one of the first DVD's I've actually watched on my TV (with full 5 speaker surround sound) as opposed to my computer I thought that the barely audible dialogue was being caused by my sound system. After reading the reviews, I found everyone had that problem.
Overall though if you are a Highlander fan, I guess it is worth the money I paid for it.
What a joke.......2000-12-29
These discs look like re-packaged VCDs... the video quality is apalling. There's compression artifacts, color bleeding, ugly doses of aliasing.... you name it. It's like watching one of those dodgy pirate copies from the far east, where someone's gone into the cinema with a camcorder.
The sound aint nothing special, either - the 5.1 remix of Highlander, in particular, is very poor... it sounds like it was mixed by a deaf person working from their bedroom. I'm not kidding.
How'd they get the THX certification on this package? Remember when 'reference quality' actually meant something?
Shame about the video quality.......2000-10-01
This is part two of my review. I saw Highlander. Took me a long time to finish viewing it, because it just didn't grab me. Can't really understand its appeal. It has some nice scenery shots, some okay fight scenes, but is doesn't have a real plot, and flashbacks get in the way of what plot there is. IMO Highlander 2 is the better movie, although it suffers from the forced attempt to link it to the first movie.
Video quality is not very good. Colouring artifacts appear in some places, and it suffers from the same aliasing problems that I mentioned for Highlander 2, although to a lesser extent.
The commentary track is a bit boring (they usually are, but these people do sound a bit more boring than most), but does give some interesting insights into the making of the movie.
This is not The Quickening.......2000-08-07
I have yet to watch the Highlander part of the pack. I started with Highlander II, and was pretty amazed. I won't claim that it's the best ever film - the acting isn't that great, and the fight scenes could be more exciting. But it still makes more sense than The Quickening.
Not only are there quite a few new scenes, but there are also many changes in the editing, including rearrangement of scenes. All in all, there are tens of changes (42 counted in the accompanying booklet), which make this movie distinctively different than the original.
Amazon lists it mistakenly as "Highlander 2: The Quickening: The Renegade Version", but it's just "Highlander 2: Renegade Version". The quickening has been cut completely from the movie, which allows it to make more sense, and link better to the first movie. The link is still a bit tenuous, but it's not as bad as before. It's nice that the people involved have gone back and actually tried to make the movie the way it was first envisioned, and not how it turned out in The Quickening.
All in all, I found this movie enjoyable, especially noting the new scenes. The DVD also includes a feature that explains the changes, a commentary track that explains the changes over the movie, and a small booklet that details the changes, which is nice - I always like adds on on paper. I'll probably take the original on DVD or VHS, to make a better comparison. Interestingly, the booklet mentions that there were both American and British versions (the American was first and worst), and this is neither. I have no idea which of the versions I've seen in the past.
I watched this on a computer with an ATI XPERT@Play 98 card outputting the picture to the TV. At 800x600, this was the worst looking film I had ever seen. Really awful. Luckily, the ATI can also output at 1024x768, which was much better. It could actually be that the film is just "too sharp", and downscaling it badly causes too many artifacts. I can't say how it would look on a DVD player. I played the sound through my mono TV, so I can't really comment about the sound track.
