For collectors only........2000-09-02
There is nothing remarkable to be found here. If you're interested in NASA films these four are good additions, at least from an historical point of view. The film quality is understandably fair to poor; nobody was concerned with Hollywood production values. And the content is rather boring. Even the film about the near-tragedy of Apollo 13 was downplayed in typical NASA propaganda style.
Madacy Entertainment has once again proven their incompetence with this disk. They gave us bios of four astronauts, three of whom never flew an Apollo mission. A look at the Gemini capsule, and summaries of three Gemini missions not only has nothing to do with the subject matter of the disk, the print is so small that it is almost unreadable. There is a five-question trivia game that is a joke. And there is a short film clip of a JFK speech at Houston, TX. (This is not the famous, "I believe that this nation should commit itself..." speech given to congress.) As we are a little more than four minutes into the clip it abruptly ends, looking for all the world as if someone pushed the pause button on their VCR.
Finally, the scene index gives you only eight choices for almost two hours' worth of program, none of these choices gets you to the beginning of any of the four films. And the disk itself would not give me any time or chapter information that would normally be found on a professionally produced DVD.
Growing up with the excitement of the early space program, watching the live television coverage of man's first steps on the moon, I found this a nostalgic look back. But not much more. Unless you're looking to collect archival footage this yawner is not for you.

Worthwhile for its technical look at the Challenger disaster.......2003-10-10
Then you have the story of NASA's first 25 years, a film I found drab and sometimes pretty boring. The best part has to do with the early work by NASA and its original astronauts in programs largely forgotten today; while Mercury and Gemini might ring a few bells today, there were really an incredible number of launches and missions that prepared the way for the moon landing in 1969. The video gives a good rundown of NASA's 1970s projects, as well, before concluding with a look at the first six successful missions of the space shuttle. The shuttle video did reawaken some emotions in me. I dreamed of working for NASA as a kid, and the launch and landing of the Columbia on that first mission is something I will never forget. Having just looked at the space vehicles used up until that time, the viewer can get some sense of just how amazing and exciting the shuttle was in its early life. The only complaints I have about this 25th anniversary NASA video are: 1) it slightly exaggerates NASA's importance in the creation of many non-space-related products and ideas and 2) it glances over the failures that were an integral part of NASA's history. The unfortunate and, given its cause, rather stupid fire that killed three astronauts on the launch pad in 1967 is at least mentioned, but there is no direct comment made about Apollo 13. I find this doubly strange because the Apollo 13 mission saw disaster transformed by NASA into its finest hour. Finally, I was gratified to see mention made of the animals that were launched on test flights long before men climbed atop any fireballs. Many animals, especially monkeys, were sent up never to return alive, and the story of these first true astronauts is a story that needs to be told.
When it comes down to brass tacks, though, I would only recommend this item to those with a keen interest in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. The NASA 25th anniversary video is surprisingly uninteresting as a whole and shamefully glosses over the trials that stand as an integral part of that history. The extra features on the DVD are also rather meaningless, consisting only of four astronaut biographies, a set of 5 trivia questions, a short description of the shuttle and three of its early missions, and a completely inexplicable film reel of the ludicrously fake spaceships featured in Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Excellent video documentation of the disaster.......1999-04-28
After that, they then analyis the flight in painstaking detail, showing mulitple ultra-slowmotion views of the flight from liftoff to water impact of the debris. They show the breakup of the vehicle in such detail that it is painful to watch.
They then use computer graphics to show the problem with the o-rings and restate the conclusions of the Presidential investigating committee. (They do not show any of the proceedings of that investigation.)
After about an hour on the accident, they provide some stock footage of the history of NASA, and (in really bad taste IMHO) scenes from "Plan 9 From Outer Space", and some other stuff I didn't sit through.
This disk does not go behind the scenes, it shows the flight, and then explains in detail what happened and why. It shows why the decision to launch was fatal, but it doesn't explain why NASA made such a bad launch decision.
Students of the Challenger disaster will want this disk so as to gain a clear picture of the technical flaw that brought down STS-51L. They will need to go else where to learn the human side of the story.

From the NASA propaganda archives.......2000-09-02
The third film, "The Four Days of Gemini 4," gives us a glimpse of America's first spacewalk. The narrator is different, the monotone is not. The few minutes of Edward White's adventure are mundane by today's standards, but they were nothing less than Star Wars at the time. I found the few seconds of private reentry conversation between White and James McDivitt somewhat interesting. "Set back and relax. You ain't gonna do much about it from here out." White returns to his "public" voice when he knows the radio blackout has ended.
The last film begins with what seems to be an aborted launch, but is actually a practice. "Gemini VIII, this is Houston Flight" focuses on ground support and recovery and almost neglects the mission itself. It's one of the few times where mission control voices are actually in sync with the person on film.
These are vintage NASA films and the video quality must be judged accordingly. Also, this being propaganda, nothing bad ever happened during that time, so the fact that the Gemini VIII docking nearly ended in tragedy is downplayed significantly. Also, it is noted that Glenn returned with his retro pack attached, but no mention is made that the nation waited and prayed because it was not known whether or not he would burn up on reentry.
Madacy Entertainment's "extras" are pathetic. There are four astronaut bios, two of which have nothing to do with this video. There are three mission summaries and one page on the Mercury capsule. All of this is in print too small to be comfortably read. The film clip stated on the jacket to be George Melie's [sic] film "Voyage de la Lune" is actually 30 seconds each from William Cameron Menzies' "Things to Come" (1936) and Georges Melies' 1903 silent "Trip to the Moon." Both of these titles are noted IN the video, but Madacy obviously never watched it. And there are five "challenging" trivia questions (and answers if you get them correct.) The challenge here is to figure out why the DVD shuts down altogether while in the "game."
Especially worthless is the scene index. Of the eight choices not one leads to the beginning of a film. (One can be accessed by keying the correct number on your remote. This exception is obviously accidental.) This is one of the more useful features of DVDs but Madacy clearly hasn't a clue.
These films are as interesting as a history lesson. Which is to say that if you enjoy history of this kind you might like this disk. Otherwise, forget it.
DON'T JUDGE THIS HORRIBLE VIDEO BY ITS COVER!.......2000-02-05

Almost worth the cost, if you've got a discount..........2000-09-02
"Opening New Frontiers," "We Deliver," "Launch and Retrieval of Satellites" and "Satellite Repairs" show the early Space Shuttle program, but neglect the R & D phase which really should be included in the series. The insistence on using only NASA films leaves a hole here. Sure, R & D is not too compelling, but none of this material is gonna keep you glued to your set. In spite of that there is a lot of decent material here. Shuttle launches, satellite deployments and rescues, interior shots, all are much better than NASA's earlier years.
Did you know that "by the mid-80s" we should be enjoying two shuttle launches per month? This is according to the first film, which focuses on the first four launches. It seems we're a bit behind schedule.
Madacy has included "extras" which should have been left behind. The bios of two of the four astronauts, as well as the page on Skylab and the summaries of the three Skylab missions belong on Volume 3 which covers Skylab. This disk is devoted to the shuttle, folks! It doesn't matter much, because the print is too small to read unless you're good friends with your set. The "challenging" trivia game is not worth the time to find your way back to the main menu.
The film clip, laughingly called, "A Montage of Soviet Mission Clips" has never been seen by the person who invented its title. It is actually a bit more than a minute showing an Apollo launch and first stage separation. The obviously non-Soviet radio exchange mentions "Apollo 11." While I realize that much of this material is boring, I would have hoped that someone at Madacy would have stayed awake long enough to get their facts straight. Also, someone was asleep at the switch in the edit room, because there is a moment at the end showing the narrator frozen as if the pause button on their VCR was pushed just a bit too late. But, regardless of the title, this clip has nothing to do with the subject matter on the disk. It should have been included with Volume 3 instead.
As with other Madacy releases, the scene access is unusable. Eight selections and not one leads to the beginning of a film, and all but two drop you off in the middle of a sentence. There is no chapter and time information available on screen, as should be with a properly produced disk. And speaking of time, the 120 minutes indicated on the jacket must have been approximated using a sundial. It's almost a half-hour short.
This disk is almost worth having by itself. Almost. But it certainly is ONLY for those interested in NASA films and space flight history.
