The Net, the first of Hollywood's big cyberthrillers of the mid-1990s, was also the most successful, thanks in large part to the natural appeal of star Sandra Bullock. Still riding high from Speed and While You Were Sleeping, Bullock plays a computer expert victimized by sinister cyberforces who steal her identity for reasons unknown. It's a clever combination of high-tech paranoia and Hitchcockian references (including Jeremy Northam as a romantic stranger named Devlin, after Cary Grant in Notorious). Film historians may look back someday on films like this--Roger Ebert calls them "hacksploitation"--to see what they reveal about our society's reaction to the increasing role of technology in our lives, just as we now study the fears of Communism and the atom bomb reflected in films of the 1950s. From Keenan Ivory Wayans, the man who brought us Jim Carrey (initially just one of the bunch on Wayans's television comedy-sketch show, In Living Color), comes I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988), a comedy spoof on the blaxploitation films of the 1970s. Wayans plays Jack Spade, an army private just returning from the service. He comes home to find his younger brother June Bug dead of a overdose of gold chains (an "O.G.") He vows revenge, and with the help of some of the neighborhood's old school heroes including Flyguy (Antonio Fargas), Kung Fu Joe (Steve James), Hammer (Isaac Hayes), Slammer (football star Jim Brown), and John Slade (Bernie Casey), Spade wages a war against Mr. Big, the neighborhood crime lord.

In the tradition of Airplane! and Naked Gun, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka pokes fun through satire and offensive comedy. The film also features some of the players that would end up on In Living Color and has appearances from such varied actors as Clarence Williams III, Eve Plumb (better known to most as Jan Brady), and Chris Rock as a rib-joint customer. --Shannon Gee

Description

A hilarious Soul Cinema send-up, this ultra-slick, urban action comedy blows 70's blaxploitation movies right out of the 'hood! Featuring the very funny Wayans family (Keenen, Damon and Kim), Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas, Isaac Hayes, Jim Brown, Ja'net DuBois, David Alan Grier, Kadeem Hardison and Chris Rock, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka is a perfect "mixture of nostalgia, silliness and genuinely unpredictable humor" (The New York Times). Jack Spade, a goody-goody war hero with medals for short-hand, returns to the ghetto to discover that his brother, Junebug, has OG'd (Over-Golded on jewelry). Jack swears revenge against the local gang boss, Mr. Big, and sets off to enlist an army of Shaft, Superfly and Black Caesarlook-a-likes, that is. They don't come easy, cheap or youngbut they do have nice clothes and enough firepower left in them to practically destroy Mr. Big's Big Brim Bar where the bad guys wearyou guessed itbig hats!

3 out of 5 stars "Naked Gun" through Ebony Eyes.......2007-03-10

This movie takes 70's blaxploitation and makes good clean fun of them. It is the Naked Gun through ebony eyes. You will recognize every single one of these characters from something you've seen before. Included are appearances by Antonio Fargas, Jim Brown, and Isaac Hayes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Black Cinema.......2007-01-15

This movie stands the test of time and is still as hilarious today as it was when it was released. You will laugh out loud as the ridiculousness and fashion excesses of the 70s are mocked. Keenan really outdid himself with this one. "Huggy Bear" wearing gold fish filled glass heeled shoes after coming out of jail is too hilarious for words.

Watch and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Im gonna get you laughin .......2006-08-15

Rarely will will you find a movie with this many laughs from beginning to end. The cast is amazing from Issic Hayes to Bernie Casey and the laughs and the sight gags just keep on comming. I compare the humor in this movie to the likes of Airplane and Police squad it,s that funny. Like all super hero movies this has a moral and a message which is even funnier that the plot.I would highly recomend this movie to any one who needs some serious laughs. It,s rared R for a reason mainly the language but that is part of the movies charm. The language does not really offend it just is.

5 out of 5 stars How did he go to the bathroom with all that stuff on???.......2005-09-14

The best way to sum up this film is by saying that this is one of the funniest movies I have seen. This film ranks right up there with Airplane and Blazing Saddles. And by that I mean that after watching this film you will find yourself quoting lines from this film for years to come. I first saw this film over 15 years ago and to this day I still find it hilarious. Even though I have seen it many times and I know all the jokes I still laugh at them. This film is that funny. This is the Wayans Bros. back when they first got started and were at there best. This film is a parody of every blaxploitation film ever made. And it is funny picking out refernces to the different films. Also keep an eye out for cameos from various actors. And always pay attention to things that are happening in the background. 15+ years later and I am still finding things happening in the background that I missed before. So order this film sit back and be prepared to laugh so hard that you cry.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie but disappointing DVD package.......2004-11-09

One of the funniest I've ever seen. One of the funniest movies of the 80's. But the DVD quality is horrible. Since its not an anamorphic transfer the quality is grainy. The DVD only has 3 gigs of data so that means the movie was compressed. You would think a greatly written and acted movie would have a commentary and extras features. Not on this!! This movie deserved better treatment.

5 out of 5 stars THRILLER, SUSPENSE Flick! .......2007-03-11

If you're into computers and you like a suspense movie, you'll probably love The Net. It combines the two quite well and Sandra Bullock does one of her best movies imo. In the film, she lives alone, spending most of her time fixing her company's computers on line. She seems to rarely go out or socialize except with others by computer. She even orders her food over the computer, and it's delivered. Because she keeps to herself, hardly anyone knows her personally, and her mother is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's Disease, so she doesn't remember her. Her only friend is an ex boyfriend, who happens to be a psychiatrist, and she's broken up with him. The fact that she's so incognito has a lot to do with the film. Before leaving for her first vacation in years, she get's a call from a friend in her company who is confused about a weird disk that's come into his possesion, and wants her to help him. Not willing to figure it out over the phone or on the computer, he tells her he needs to see her in person and he's flying to her home in LA. He never arrives.

She takes her vacation, but while at the beach she meets a hacker. Both are lying on the beach with computers clicking away. He seems like a nice enough guy, but beware, maybe he's not. The real plot actually begins at this point. From then on it's a mystery and a chase. This hacker works for a shady crime syndicate whose trying to take over the government by hacking into their computers.

She's chased all over the movie by this underground bunch, and I won't tell you the ending, but it's pretty exciting. Bullock is really good in this one.

4 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever!.......2006-10-01

The Net sheds light (as it should do) on the reality of people having grown so dependent on technology that someone tampering with one's data or an unintended error for that matter could lead to a nightmare.
The film brings to the screen the story of Angela Bennett, a computer expert, who after receiving a disc with sensitive information falls victim to a cover up with herself being the one who is being covered up...
Sandra Bullock and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, and the dialogues are all wonderful!
In short, The Net is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars OTHERWISE FORGETABLE FILM IF NOT FOR THE BEWITCHING SANDRA.......2006-05-23

With any other woman in the lead role this film would be destined to go in the ranks of turkeys like 2fast 2furious but the incredibly sexy Sandra Bullock steals the show. She's not glamerous but rather "Homey" in this role which makes her all the more appealing. Good supporting cast

4 out of 5 stars Even after 11 years, still a film worth watching........2006-03-08

I remember watching this film 10 years ago on video, and thinking that it was an exciting rollercoaster ride. the film mainly works thanks to the credibility of the sandra bullock character, she comes through as vulnerable, yet smart and she pulls you into the paranoia, suspense , and action of the plot. And the film still works today because as in the film, we've become a society completely dependant over computers and we can empathize with the fear of becoming victims to technology.

4 out of 5 stars THE NET.......2006-03-07

This is an interesting story, for me, since I have been writing computer code since 1959. ( I also find Sandra Bullock 'interesting' ) The story line of an individual losing their identity through computer hacking is REAL. The movie story is a good tutorial for people who would like to protect themselves from computer crime.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is a big, fun, bubble-brained mess of a movie, and that's exactly as it should be. Its popular 2000 predecessor got the formula right: gorgeous babes, throwaway plots, and as many current pop-cultural trends as you could stuff into a candy-coated dollop of Hollywood mayhem. This sequel goes one "better": The plot's even more disposable (if that's possible), the babes, cars, and fashions even more outlandish, and the stuntwork (heavily digital, heavily absurd) reaches astonishing heights of cartoon silliness. Reprising their titular (and shamelessly titillating) roles, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu are having the time of their lives, especially when sparring with ultra-buff rogue angel Demi Moore (looking better at 40 than most women half her age) and Justin Theroux as a sleazy Irish mobster. Bernie Mac replaces Bill Murray as angel-sidekick Bosley (they're step-brothers, don'cha know), which is one more indication of McG's intentionally reckless stewardship of an intentionally reckless franchise. Our advice: sit back, relax, and get jiggly with it. --Jeff Shannon

It makes Citizen Kane look amateurish. The finest most profound film of our time. "Proof" that TV writers are our greatest artistes.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Movie in the History of Cinema.......2007-01-26

A few months ago I was channel surfing when I stumbled across Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle. This movie is light years beyond awful. I believe it was the worst movie of 2003, the worst movie of the decade, the worst movie in the history of cinema.

Some Amazon vendors are selling used DVDs of this film for one penny, but even that price is far too high. The only good thing about this movie is that it would make an effective alternative to water boarding.

1 out of 5 stars Hey remember when movies used to be about plot and story lines?.......2007-01-02

-This spectacular piece of poop is about the three angels stopping a former angel from taking over the world or whatever. So the angels must stop her and whiles they're busy doing that they run into such amazing adventures like stripping for no reason and delivering lines so terrible they almost blew out my center speaker. In the incredibly predictable and crappy end they save the day and they all give us a constipated smile to suggest that they live happily ever after. Wow that has never been done before. I always thought that foolscreen DVD's were the worst thing to happen to cinema but it turns out I was wrong, that crown goes to the master filmmaker McG. How the hell he keeps getting his movies green lit is perhaps the greatest mystery since "why Paris Hilton is famous". I'm really glad that he dropped out of the new "Superman" movie and let the supremely talented Bryan Singer direct, because if he had directed it then "Batman Begins" would have been the first and only great DC comics movie.

-I really hate this movie. Usually there's something decent about every movie but this movie had NOTHING. Much like that dog poop "House of the Dead" this movie is devout of any form of entertainment what so ever. There are potholes so big you can drive a tank through them. Then there's the lines, my god this movie has pound for pound some of the worst dialog ever to invade my ears. Whoever was the DP on this movie needs to beaten severely because the look of this crap gave me a headache. The colors are so bright and so "look at me" that it causes nausea, and the lights are so heavy on the actors that their faces look like it has had too much make up applied to it.

-The fights are also incredibly stupid. You can tell that these women are on a wire so much that it borders on the idiotic. McG's attitude in this crap was that the angles can do anything, and that includes sliding under tables and doing cartwheels with a chair. Another thing that drove me insane is that these girls are suppose to be intelligent and yet they keep acting stupid in every scene that we see them in. There is one scene in which the angels must retrieve a key from a man and instead of waiting for him in a parking lot and knocking him down to steal the key, they instead opt to do a striptease and distract him. I'm sure some horny 14 year old may find that entertaining but if you're not horny, and 14 then you'll find it as pointless as everyone else did. The music is bland and the jokes go down faster than Jenna Jameson at work. If you look up deplorable in the dictionary you'll see a picture of this movie

-If you have a party and you want to clear out the room then pop this movie in and surely everyone will leave your house so you can clean up, but if you're not having a party and want to clear the room then please by all means avoid this with all your might. it is really dreadful and painful, kinda like my jokes.

1 out of 5 stars Loud, obnoxious, pathetic attempt at entertainment for morons........2006-08-07

This film has plenty of mindless action, impossible (to the point of laughable) stunts, and a healthy supply of sexual inuendo. It has all of the ingredients of a large scale "jane bond" (times three) but the finished product will still leave you feeling like you just ate some really bad fast food. A pounding headache is also quite normal after a viewing since complete suspension of disbelief is required.

The "camp" level is turned up so high that it doesn't mix well with the seriousness of the violence and action. Or is it the other way around? Something "fun" could have been done with this material, these actors, and the money spent on FX. But instead we're treated to a collection of loud, mind numbing, rediculous stunts all held together by smirks, quips, winks, and a plot as thick as dental floss. It all comes down to a horrible script lacking any true sense of "fun". For those who argue that this film actually lives up to every "simple" thing that it's "supposed to be" - let me refine my review to just one "simple" sentence:

This movie is a big piece of crap for really, really stupid people!

-JM

4 out of 5 stars I liked it alot.......2006-07-03

I know everyone is going to say that my reveiw is not useful before they even read it but thats ok. I thought that this movie was a great ride. Its fun fluff and is not ment to be taken seriously. Thats where its strenght is. It know exactly what vibe it wants to give off and it does that perfectly. The action is really well choreographed and the actresses are good and making their angel an individual, not in the "crash" way, but in the "mary-kate and ashley" way. Im so happy that Lucy Lui made this movie because i was so tired of seeing her as a angery serious character, but rather wanted to see her bubbly side. The cinematoraphy is B-E-A-Utiful. Everything is alive with color from the boxes in the irish mob boat, to Cameron Deiz's wet beach hair. The look of this movie is great. The story is slim and the movie is very silly but i personally dont want to sit through a History of Violence everytime i go and see a action movie. But then again...i might just be alone on that one....

5 out of 5 stars Best Van Halen or Rock DVD I've seen yet.......2006-10-04

As a prior Van Halen with DLR fan I was pleasantly surprised by the energy and tightness of this show. Sammy Hager is way better than DLR and I think he shows it here big time. Eddie has never been better and the 5150 song riffs are awesome and tight. Camera work is good too as they jump around in tune with the songs quite well. Overall just a great time and really brings back some memories for me of the great rock concerts of the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Show.......2006-05-24

This is for the VHS release to pretty much review what's on it. It's Van Halen's 1st tour (this being in "New Halen" CT.) with Sammy Hagar as front man. While I'm a much bigger fan of the David Lee Roth era of VH, this show was a lot of fun to watch. Since this concert was from 1986 all the "Van Hagar" songs are from the 5150 album; Summer Nights, Get Up, 5150, Best of Both Worlds, Love Walks In, and Why Can't This Be Love. Classic VH songs include Panama and Aint Talkin' Bout Love. Two of Sammy's songs; There's Only One Way to Rock and I Can't Drive 55 are also on here. And with a better band to back him up! Alex does a drum solo which was pretty much a piss break as I absolutly hate those 80's electric drum set ups. Michael Anthony's bass solo was pretty much the class clown act of the show with his Jack Daniels shaped bass guitar (and several shots of the real booze). Eddie's guitar solo was a compilation of all his instrumentals (Eruption, Spanish Fly, Cathedral, etc) from the previous albums and a sneak preview of "316" found on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album (released 5 years later). The show closes with a "Rock n Roll" tribute to Led Zeppelin.

Again, this is a review of the VHS release as I've not heard good things about the DVD. If you're a Fan of the Van Hagar era then you definitly should have this in your collection. But even if you're a Diamond Dave era fan like I am, it's still a fun show

5 out of 5 stars Best Van Halen video alongside with not released Sydney 98 show.......2006-04-06

This DVD shows Van Halen in great shape. Band is fresh andnew vocalist is really trying to show that he deserves to be in band.
So we can see great guitars and great vocals. There are almost all songs from 5150" album, and there is one Led Zeppelin cover!
What is more, no Jump (thanks God!).
The best thing is Eddie's solo, which is his finest i have ever heard, espesially those improvisations on "mean streets" intro.
Also very nice is part just before "Best of both worlds" when Sammy is singing and shouting and Eddie is trying to immitate it on guitar:)
Highlights: Get up, Best of both worlds(band is dancing all way long), 5150(Eddie improvisation during solo), Guitar solo. And of course "Summer Nights" - only one thing - Sam could try to scream longer during repeat of intro riff, just after solo - I love this part from album - riff, wild drumming and this long scream:)
And one more thing I don't understand - GOOD ENOUGH is not included, even though it was planned to be on it, one of the best VH songs
Anyway 5 stars
:(

4 out of 5 stars Live without Annette.......2006-04-02

A sparkling concert and a journey back to the heydey of Van Halen (post Diamond Dave) in a remarkable concert that occurred coincident with the Chernobyl disaster. Even old Mitch Hagar can't spoil the festivities as the boys rope-in song after song from their oeuvre and play it to perfection. Hagar's melodic rant against speed-limits somewhat mars the proceedings as its simplistic style is several steps below VH's standards. But all-in-all this is a solid sonic outing from our boys and Eddie's ***damn solo is worth the price of admission. I bought the VHS 19-years ago and to this day Eddie still makes me say "hooooooweeee that moe foe can play that gee-tar! Tell ya wot!"

4 out of 5 stars Second best to actually being in class.......2007-06-15

It's hard to learn Capoeira from DVD, and there is no good substitution to a teacher watching you and giving you personal feedback. Moreover, it's hard to take notice of the details when watching this DVD, things like where the leg lands, how the hand moves etc. If you take a class, you'd probably learn most of the movements within weeks anyway - and with the details according to your school (I've noticed there are slight variations). But I did learn few things, so maybe you would too.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome - truely amazing!.......2007-05-13

Paulinho Sabia really did a great job on demonstrating step-by-step instructions! A really inspirational dvd and complete with short clips of regional style rodas in Brasil. There is the option of having a voice-over lady translate the portugues into english, but i would recommend just learning basic portugues and you will understand what Mestre is trying to say!
I love this dvd and give major props for it!

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD if you want to get some insight into performing capoeira moves.......2007-05-07

If at all possible find a good teacher of capoeira to learn from, be it a mestre, contra-mestre, professor, imstructor, etc. But if you can't make it to class regularly, then DVD is great to learn some basic and a few intermediate level moves in regional capoeira. The instruction comes in multiple languages (English was not the default language on my DVD so I had to change it). Also, you need an older or cheaper DVD player to play the DVD if you are in the US. I tried to play my DVD on my newer DVD player (3 yrs old) and it would not play at all, but I tried it on a DVD player that was about [...] and played just fine. Otherwise, this DVD was great and the bonus feature of the capoiera games was phenominal. You will see somethings you may not ever be able to do, but is really cool to look at.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!.......2007-01-12

This is a great beginners instructional DVD for those really interested in learning this kind of martial art. It also comes in four languages.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness.......2007-02-21

The last, and least, film in the so-called Uptown trilogy, this 1977 buddy comedy is preachier than its more rollicking predecessors, Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again. It begins like The Sting, but then veers into To Sir, with Love territory, as Dave (Bill Cosby), a safecracker, and Manny (Sidney Poitier), a con man, are blackmailed by a retired detective (James Earl Jones, who would achieve pop-culture immortality that year as the voice of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars) to work at a community-improvement center and inspire the delinquent youth to respect themselves and find jobs. An answer to the violent and militant blaxploitation films of the period, these films, each directed by Poitier, were the Barbershop of their day. Poitier and Cosby are a seamless team; their ease, charm, and integrity carry the film's more plodding patches, as does Curtis Mayfield's authentic score. Fans of these icons will want to get a piece of this action. --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars A Piece of Redundancy.......2007-03-13

I dig the whole 70s genre thing man; but the ongoing mob-money, flip the script thing is redundant in light of the same spin from the previous "uPTOWN sATURDAY nIGHT", and "Let's Do It Again".

The cast is fantastic and the sound track is outstanding. I feel the script didn't do the cast justice. I guess it was just a product of the short-comings of the stereo-typical roles for that era. Hey, I thought Martin Lawrence and Will Smith were going to remake one of these films..holla back.

Once again, Sidney Potier and Bill Cosby come together but this time with more of a serious tone (as much as can be achieved with Cosby and Potier onscreen together.) James Earl Jones, awesome as usual, and an extraordinary supporting cast make the movie a piece you should not miss.

5 out of 5 stars "Delicious".......2006-03-18

For me this is the best movie both Sid & Bill have done. A very good storyline (especially for those days) complete with an exellent brand of comedy & marvelous soundtrack to add that cherry on top.....
This gets a 5*
And Tracey Reed (sidney's woman) gets a 50,000000*
If I ever saw her Id have to put my Mack game on her - Im only 25 but hey 'I Aint Never Scared'

4 out of 5 stars "You don't get something for nothing!".......2005-11-21

At a time when the `blaxploitation' genre was prevalent in the cinema, a handful of individuals tried to provide an intelligent, positive alternative, one being Academy Award winner Sidney Poitier (Lilies of the Field, To Sir, with Love, In the Heat of the Night), with a trio of films he not only directed, but also co-starred in with Bill Cosby, including Uptown Saturday Night (1974), Let's Do It Again (1975), and this feature, titled A Piece of the Action (1977), which would mark Poitier's last role in front of the camera for just over ten years, as he focused his efforts towards directing. Also appearing is James Earl Jones (Field of Dreams, The Hunt for Red October), Denise Nicholas (Blacula, Let's Do It Again), Hope Clarke (Basquiat), Tracy Reed (Car Wash, Running Scared), and Titos Vandis (The Exorcist, Oh, God!), along with Ja'net DuBois ("Good Times", I'm Gonna Git You Sucka), Frances Foster (Crooklyn), Eric Laneuville (A Force of One), Ernest `Rog' Thomas ("What's Happening!!"), and Sheryl Lee Ralph (The Mighty Quinn, Skin Deep), in her first film role.

As the film begins we meet two men, Dave Anderson (Cosby), a burglar who specializes in safecracking, and Manny Durrell (Poitier), a conman who's just fleeced a local criminal boss, Mr. Bruno (Vandis) out of a whole lot of dough. The activities of both men draw the attention of the police, including that of soon to be retired detective Joshua Burke (Jones), but neither man is fingered for their respective crimes...that is until Burke blackmails David and Manny into working for a local community improvement center. The two men, not knowing their blackmailer, or each other, for that matter, become reluctant philanthropists, stuck having to train and find jobs for 30 inner city juvenile delinquents who seemingly have little desire or motivation to make their lives better, and are only participating in the program because of a court order (one thing they do have a lot of is attitude). As the men begin their `penance' work, they also try to figure out who is behind their predicament, as if they can discern the identity of their `benefactor', they may also find a way out, but matters become difficult as Dave sort of falls for the woman who heads the community center, Ms. Lila French (Nicholas), while Mr. Bruno and his associates learn the identity of the person responsible for conning them i.e. Manny (it's not so much about the money, but an issue of disrespect). Interestingly enough, David and Manny's work with the troubled youths begins to show positive results, but they may not be around long enough to enjoy the successes as the mobsters seek their revenge.

While this isn't my favorite Poitier/Cosby pairing, it's still a really well done movie, and definitely worth checking out. Actually, I believe all three films The Cos and Poitier did were originally intended more for African American audiences, to show they didn't have to settle for the stereotypical black caricatures streaming out of Hollywood at the time, but the movies had such appeal that most all audiences appreciated them, and, subsequently, they did very well. The main difference here compared to their two, previous outings is this one has less humor and slapsticky comedy. It's almost like there's two movies here, one dealing with Poitier and Cosby's character trying to get out of their predicament, and then a second featuring Poitier sort of reprising his role from his 1967 film To Sir, with Love, which featured him as a teacher trying to infuse a sense of self worth into a bunch of snotty English students (there are a number of touching, borderline sappy sequences, as the kids come to terms with their reality, and realize they have to make their own opportunities). Each plot is given equal time, finally converging into one story, resulting in a running time of just over two hours. Another big difference is here Poitier and Cosby start out as criminals, eventually seeing the error of their ways, while in the previous films their characters were more along the lines of working class fellows who get humorously tangled up with criminal elements. The chemistry between Poitier and Cosby is most definitely present as it was in the previous films, with Poitier as sort of the straight man to Cosby's comical character, and a lot of credit goes to a strong, professional supporting cast headed by James Earl Jones, as the no nonsense retired detective using the men to help those less fortunate for his own reasons. It did seem a little odd how quickly the kids caught on and turned things around for themselves, but then Poitier's character did employ some unique techniques. Another aspect that helped a lot was the inclusion of a number of fine looking women, including Denise Nicholas, Tracy Reed, and Hope Clarke, who are all excellent performers that held their own well against Cosby, Poitier, and Jones. There was sort of an odd subplot featuring Manny, his girlfriend Nikki, played by Reed (the two were living together), and an unexpected visit from her disapproving parents (and an alcoholic aunt played by DuBois), I wasn't sure where this aspect was going, but I think it was mainly meant to show Manny's affections for Nikki, as later she's kidnapped by the goons, and used as leverage against Poitier's character. The story moves along well, but given all that's going on in the film, some might get a little lost if they're not paying attention. Some aspects of the story could have been simplified, or even removed, but given the movie was an all around good time, I didn't mind it running longer than it needed too...I think my favorites scenes involved Bill Cosby's character dancing, once in a disco, and again at the very end during the credits. I have to say, some of those moves, which I don't think I've ever seen another human being perform, were outta sight. Oh, before I forget, the movie also features an excellent, original musical score by the legendary rhythm and blues artist Curtis Mayfield.

The picture on this DVD, presented in widescreen (1.85:1) anamorphic, looks very good, and the Dolby Digital mono audio comes through cleanly. There are some extras included, the main one being a featurette titled Dynamite Duo: A Retrospective (7:30), which includes interviews with actors James Earl Jones, Denise Nicholas, Jimmie Walker, John Amos, Julius Harris, screenwriter Richard Wesley, New York Press critic Armond White, and USC professor and author Todd Boyd. Also included is a trailer for this film, along with ones for the films Uptown Saturday Night (1974) and Let's Do It Again (1975).

5 out of 5 stars Bulletproof \o/.......2007-01-01

This WAS my all-time favorite Christian movie (until "Facing The Giants" came along), but it's still way, way up there on my short list & I surely loves it to death ...

Sugar (Whitman Mayo) is simply delightful (& if I could find a way to bottle his super-Sugar-sweetness & sell it, I would be a rich woman right now) & (although I never could bring myself to believe that he was an old Jewish shopkeeper) I did SO thoroughly enjoy Burt Reynold's performance as Eli Zeal & the way he was able to pull the right emotion out of every single scene &, really, all the actors did such a stunning job in this movie, it's hard to find any fault ...

There's also lots of really cool behind-the-scenes features (& some will probably make you cry just as much as the movie) & I find myself having to purchase this DVD over & over again, because I keep giving it away ...

4 out of 5 stars An imperfect but uplifting film.......2006-11-04

This is by far the best of all the movies that Cloud Ten Pictures has produced. The film tackles many major issues - single mothers and the difficulty they have raising their children, family secrets covered up by lies, race relations, inter-faith relations, and others - and yet manages to do so without being heavy-handed.

Wayward young son Thaniel Battle is forced by two older gang members to rob and shoot Jewish shopowner Eli Zeal (Burt Reynolds). His mother, Tyree, doesn't know what to do, so she kidnaps the wounded Zeal and drives him to her estranged family in Louisiana. There her 102-year old grandfather will nurse him back to health while Tyree decides how to keep Thaniel out of trouble with the law.

As Zeal stays with the family he begins to sense that there are some dark secrets that need to come out into the open. He goes from being the one healed to the one who instigates the healing of the Battle family as he cajoles Tyree to reveal what it is that made her leave her family so many years earlier.

From a Christian viewpoint, there are some flaws with this movie. Zeal tells a lie in order to get Tyree to tell the truth, which seems to equate to it taking to wrongs to make a right. Also, once Tyree has revealed her secret, she wants to get right with God. She does this by simply being baptized into the local church; no mention is made of her accepting Jesus Christ into her life. I mention these points only because Cloud Ten is a Christian film company. If they are going to make Christian films that present redemption, then they should make sure that those films portray the true gospel message of that redemption being available only through Christ.

In spite of these flaws, this is still a wonderful tale of restored relationships. Burt Reynolds' performance is actually the weakest among the major characters in the film; he seems to be playing a Jewish stereotype rather than an individual character. Whitman Mayo (probably best-known as Grady on the '70's sitcom "Sanford and Son", though you'll hardly recognize him at first since he shaved his beard) is a delight as the aged grandfather. The rest of the cast did a fine job with their roles, especially Ja'net Dubois and Anthony Lee. I highly recommend this film as it addresses so many important issues that are prevalent in today's society and still manages to entertain rather than only to lecture or to criticize (that is, it won't turn people off by being too preachy).

5 out of 5 stars Must see film.......2006-10-12

This movie has a well written screenplay. With a very strong character given plot. Which means all the actors had to act, and they did. Wounderful performances by the entire cast. In the world of action/adventure movies, this is a very nice change.

This movie is about faith, hope, and of redemption. Each character's story feels full and complete. It starts as we see a young boy forced to shoot a grocer in Washington, D.C. in order to be included in a gang. A single mother doing her best to rasie him in the inner city. We are quickly taken out of the city to her families home where she returns to a whole new set of problems. The dynamics of the family clan handling the situation will pluck the heart strings in anyone. A film that is good for the whole family to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Be Healed.......2006-03-22

This is a movie that is worth watching and gets better as it goes on.
Burt Reynolds plays an aging neighborhood grocer who is shot by the young son of a single mother in Wash. D.C. The kid is a budding delinquent who is bullied into participating in the crime by some young thugs who push him to "prove himself".
The kid's mother finds him and the wounded man at the scene of the crime. She drives them both (she's a taxi driver by profession) to the family home in Waterproof Louisiana. The clan welcomes the prodigal daughter and grandson and tends to the wounded man. In the course of the visit the family history is revealed.
The actors are superb as they bring forth the story of suffering, guilt, redemption, and forgiveness.
It is surprising to see Burt Reynolds in this part but his confidence seemed to grow as the movie moves along. He displays sensitivity and ultimately avoids shtick in a role that was a real risk for an actor who established spectacular stardom in macho, action movies. This is a part completely foreign to his usual characterizations and he showed artistic courage and humility in shedding his image for the sake of a movie that was never going to make millions.
You may quibble about various imperfections if this movie doesn't meet your standard of political correctness and/or isn't mean enough to suit your social perspective. But the message will take hold of you anyway because the performances are that good.

Be sure to check out the cast credits which includes the marvelous talents of Whitman Mayo, Ja'net DuBois, April Grace, Orlando Jones, Anthony Lee,Cordereau Dye, and Gil Johnson

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Movie!.......2006-01-31

I found the whole movie facinating! I love the characters and they are played very well by the actors in it. I've watched three times sine I got it a few days ago. It keeps you wondering if they will ever go back to Washington D.C. The interaction between Tyree and Eli makes you wonder if they will have sequel to this movie especially toward the end.
As for the other reviewers criticism of the baptism scene it is more symbolic of her willingness to stop running away from two things--her past and her religion.
However, there were some things it could work on--like why Eli likes the church and doesn't get baptized--after all hew wouldn't have originally since he is Jewish and some of the movie doesn't seem to have any explanation as to why it occurs like Nattie, the man with the brain injury, as to why he goes swimming every night. I think they need a sequel just to explain what was left out and to elaborate on how close knit Eli actually gets with the family.
However, it is good movie and I recommend people to see it, if not for the interesting story line and characters, maybe for the comedic parts. It's good, clean entertainment and Christian enough for me, by the way.

Essentially a cautionary tale of slightly futuristic cyberterrorism, Netforce carries Tom Clancy's heavyweight name as the executive producer (but not writer). Don't expect a drama on the level of Patriot Games, however: Netforce is a blunt and somewhat rushed thriller with little time for character or relationship development. What it does offer is a scenario for the prospect of organized crime uniting with computer geeks and malevolent industrialists to sabotage national security through attacks on the Internet. Scott Bakula plays the FBI agent in charge of the Netforce division of the bureau; he takes charge after his mentor (Kris Kristofferson) is murdered and the investigation points to the involvement of a Web pioneer (Judge Reinhold). The hero's romance with a colleague (Joanna Going) grows a little trickier after he promotes her to the number two spot behind himself, but with the president's chief of staff (Brian Dennehy) breathing down their necks, that's the least of their professional problems. The action bounces around from good guys to sundry bad guys, but there's no question that a creeping paranoia about Net vulnerability and its disastrous implications grows on this production--and the viewers. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Net Force Rocks.......2006-08-22

Loved this movie for the most part, especially Scott Bakula and Chelsea Field. It was nice to see them together again in a movie. It has plenty of action and some nice moments between Scott and Chelsea and Alex and his daughter. The plot has a neat twist at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Clancy's Net-Force held my interest.......2006-05-28

I watched this movie for two reasons, it was about computers and Scott Bakula was a main actor starring in it. I enjoyed the action and the relationship factor in the story. You care for these characters and they are likeable too. I also was pleasantly entertained by the pace and acting of this movie, and love the twists at several parts. It kept me glued until the end. I enjoyed wtching it so much I purchaed the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Clancy's Netforce.......2004-04-18

I've read some of Tom Clancy's works before. They are all quite entertaining in their own different way. However, the only one of Clancy's works transferred to the screen I've bothered to watch was Netforce. That was strictly to see Scott Bakula again. Scott's portrayal of Alex was a gem to see. After Netforce, I went out to find other books in this series and only read the Alex parts!

4 out of 5 stars It sounds good.......2003-12-28

Hi everyone. MOst of you know who Tom Clancy is. He has video games out there. Like Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. Those are great games. So most people would think this would be a great movie since it has his name in it. I thought it was a pretty good movie. But most of the other reviews said it sucked. So if you don't believe me just see it yourself. And stop listening to the reviews.

2 out of 5 stars Clancy must not research his movies as much as we thought.......2003-10-28

Very inaccurate depiction of computers. Tom Clancy, i thought you were highly touted as being a realistic researcher of the details... how did you flub this one so bad?
