The booming popularity of "Ultimate Fighting" and all the attendant superstar DVD compilations in constant release has sparked a lot of interest for new fans to work their way backwards in the history of the "sport." The tagline on the box is, "In the Beginning There Were No Rules." Not much has changed in Ultimate Fighting since these bouts were documented in 1994--there are still no rules, and the hits, chops, body blows and blood are more real than anything that tame-in-comparison professional wrestling has to offer. Ultimate Fighting usually involves matches that pit fighters with two completely different styles in an octagonal cage. There's no corner to escape to -- no escape at all, in fact. Legends in this collection include Royce Gracie who demonstrates his own brand of Jiu-Jitsu, and Ken Shamrock, whose specialty is something called Submission Fighting. This is raw, brutal stuff, which is exactly what makes it so exciting for hardcore UFC devotees. --Ted Fry

Only for historical Perspective, not entertainment.......2007-06-27
UFC 1 is aptly titled "The Beginning"; nobody had any clue what was to follow.
If the UFC aired an equivalent performance today that emulated the skill and excitement of UFC 1, it may lost all but 8 of its fans. It's mind shattering that any good came out of this... but this was the birth of MMA.
With the exception of the 59 second Shamrock-Gracie match-up, the other six fights resemble what one would expect to find at the Montana County Fairgrounds, not the highest stage of MMA. You have Shamrock, Gracie, and 6 no-names that lack skill and harbor no concept of a ground game.
If you're a UFC fan, buy this tape at a discount for a historical perspective of how far the game has evolved. Don't expect hours of repeatable entertainment, its just not in the cards.
All good things start with a bang!.......2007-06-06
When something is about to make history and set a new standard for anything in the future, it always starts with a bang, as do most revolutions. When Dutch Savate fighter Gerard Gordeu kicks Sumo wrestler Telia Tuli in the mouth, knocking a tooth into the crowd, before punching him in the face, it was obvious the martial arts world was going to be rocked to its core.
So begins "Ultimate Fighting Championship Classics, Vol. 1", the age of the style vs. style matches that brought Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and the significance of grappling to an American audience that was used to fist fights and stunning martial arts movies.
I know I was knocked down into reality by watching this gem, and enjoyed the heck out of it. It was like the video game "Street Fighter" but for real.
Every fan of the UFC needs to watch this one at least once. Pay homage to the past as you enjoy the modern glory, the rebirth of Pankration, that is MMA/NHB
There is NO parity!.......2007-03-26
Ah, UFC 1. Thousands of fans packed into the McNichols Arena to see the age-old question answered: What happens when this style takes on this other style in an equal setting where just about anything goes?
Royce Gracie: "You wanna know what happens when anything goes? I'LL show you what happens when anything goes!"
Yes, a nation would receive a harsh on-the-spot education of what mixed martial arts was really about. And the world of fighting would never again be the same...
A couple of completely overmatched hopess cases (Tuli and Jimmerson) and some rough work from the referee, but in all, it accomplished what it was supposed to. Let the controversy begin.
Mixed Martial Arts in the US - The early days.......2006-11-06
Very interesting for the mixed martial arts fans to see how the UFC begun in the nineties. An historical document to show how the MMA phenomenon has develloped from the time when there were fewer rules and fighters from different backgrounds were trying to impose their arts.
Those purely looking for the best quality MMA fights should look for more recent UFC or Pride events.
A Blast from the Past - UFC Numero Uno.......2006-09-15
They don't make them like they use to and this cannot be stressed more than in the short life of Mixed Martial Arts. In the days before it even had a name (prior to NHB), MMA in United States was only legal in one state and advertised as a "no rules" event. The first installment of this groundbreaking event took place in Denver 's McNichols Arena on November 12, 1993 and formatted in a 8-Man tournament scheme. With Rorion Gracie, Art Davies, and Robert Meyrowitz at the helm the UFC was born and competitive fighting would never be the same.
From the Gracie family's point-of-view a tournament like the UFC would be the ideal platform to show the world their family martial arts system that had dominated Brazil for the better of 60 years. While many consider Grandmaster Helio Gracie as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu's (or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) leader, it was his eldest son Rorion who had the vision to expand Gracie Jiu-Jitsu beyond Brazil to the United States . After setting up shop, the next question would be who from the impressive (and accomplished) stable of Gracies would represent the family in the tournament. Rickson Gracie was the family champion and most respected out of the clan, but his more aggressive style was thought of as not suitable to fully exhibit the subtleness and style Rorion wanted to portray. Young Royce was the choice and immediately many questioned if he would even last one fight. Royce was a tall and slender 176 pound young man that at first glance would not be considered to be dangerous. He was though the perfect subject for Rorion to show the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Other notable fighters in the tournament included:
Savate champion Gerard Gordeau who was known in the kickboxing world as a lethal striker.
Shootfighter Ken Shamrock who was experienced in the Pancrase organization in Japan that was similar to the UFC.
Kickboxer Pat Smith had established himself as a strong full-contact karate and kickboxer.
The first fight really set the tone for the tournament as it shocked fans, commentators, and the fighters as well. Fans were puzzled and astonished, commentators were left stunned not really knowing what to say, and the fighters expecting a "tough man" type of fight were scared straight.
A fight with limited rules and no time limit really threw off fighters use to the confinements of their respected arts/competition, but what many fighters clearly did not process was any skill on the ground. Aside from Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie no other fighter really knew what to do on the ground and this would be their downfall.
After the night was over, an elated winner was asked what he would do with his winnings; he responded "...going to Disneyland ", a fitting statement considering the importance of this event.

Volume two of these classic bouts from the early and mid-'90s includes fierce matchups between UFC superstar Royce Gracie and Jason Delucia (Gracie's own form of Jiu-Jitsu vs. Delucia's Kung Fu), a rare karate/karate brawl between Johnny Rhodes and Fred Ettish, along with more bloody kickboxing, Ninjitsu, Judo, Grappling, and Muay Thai that you can shake a barbed wire-wrapped stick at. The showcase is Ultimate Fighting's distinctive "Steel Octagon," where the bodies flail like rag dolls and the blood always flows freely. The production values of this vicious collection are none too professional and feel delightfully dated. The commentary is contagiously over-the-top (with Jim Brown again in the guest commentator hot seat) especially when the violence is at its peak. That's pretty much all the time, which makes UFC for die-hard, guts-of-steel fans only. --Ted Fry

The best of the early UFC gems..........2007-06-06
Remember these names... Fred Ettish and Scott Morris...
Some of the most severe beatings in MMA/NHB history occured at this second event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the organization that rocked the martial arts world... It was a 16 man tournament, and it is probably the best. This is the best of the early UFC events, and the one that initiated me into the world of mixed martial arts when it debuted. Style vs. Style at its best, before the dogma of style was destroyed forever...
As much as I enjoyed the show, I was disappointed that this update version did not include the first eight preliminary bouts. I was really wanting to see the Hammaker (Sambo) vs. (Pencat Silat) bout... no dice...
That's the only reason it gets a 4... It is still an absolute must for any martial arts fan.
Not for the squeamish.......2007-03-26
UFC 2. An event like no other. The only 16-man tournament in the history of the event, and the most brutal, vicious sporting event I've seen in my life.
A hapless 18-year-old gets a harsh education on what "showing up" means. Robert Lucarelli takes a beatdown, doesn't tap out properly, and suffers a second beatdown. Minoki Ichihara sees his entire fighting style rendered useless by Royce Gracie. Then Patrick Smith gets a piece of Scott Morris, and it's not pretty. And of course, Remco Pardoel vs. Orlando "The Gladiator" Weit, which produced the first truly frightening moment of this young event.
Faces get smashed in, arms get wrenched, and blood flows freely. In the end, however, it comes down not to violence, but skill. That's the beauty of it.
Note: The DVD has three first round matches other than what was shown on the PPV, which had to be shortened due to time constraints.
Great DVD. video quality........2006-05-27
I had these on video and the dvd's are the same quality with some interviews added. Just to clarify UFC classics 2 does contain the very last match of the first round. This is all that has ever been available as far as I know, including the video.
Not what I thought it would be.......2006-03-18
I was very excited to see the original UFC's on DVD! I was disappointed with this one though, because the first round of fights are left off! The DVD starts off with the second round of fights. This is disappointing since this is the only UFC that had four rounds of fights!
Back to the roots.......2006-02-09
This would have gotten 5 stars from me if there would have been a bit more in the production value. Not much in the way of special features here, which is really sad when you stop and think about how rich this could have been with more interviews. Otherwise, this is a must own simply because it is something historic... a new sport was forged here.

A supercharged bloodfest for mixed martial arts fight fans, but of more dubious merit as a documentary, The Smashing Machine is a blurry, noncommittal portrait of would-be American warrior Mark Kerr, a soft-spoken drug addict who performs astonishing acts of violence for big money. A former wrestler turned extreme fighter, Kerr proves a contradictory subject--a boyish, quietly restless man who resorts to no-hold-barred savagery in the ring--in this shameless, often nauseating HBO project. Over several months, director John Hyams (NYPD Blue) captures Kerr's seemingly unstoppable parade of victory in the U.S. and Japan. He also reflects the decay in Kerr's private life and highlights a dramatic turn in his fortunes after Kerr loses an important MMA match to a Russian brawler. Along the way, we meet Kerr's trainer, Mark Coleman, whose own destiny takes on ironic, unexpected importance in the end. --Tom Keogh
Description
A sport so dangerous it was once banned in the U.S., no-holds-barred fighting is undeniably the purest form of human competition. Simple in concept and savage in execution, it is the definitive test of survival: one ring, two fighters, and no rules. In th

Very Well Done.......2006-07-15
This documentary gives the sport of no holds barred fighting a human face. Mark Kerr is one of thousands of `ultimate fighters' that put their lives on the line for pride, money and family honor. Before I saw this film, I had seen a few of Kerr's fights and I was impressed with his ability and style. But I really had no idea about the man outside the ropes. This film presents Kerr as a brave and talented, but flawed man. And that is why it is so good, because nobody is really invincible or totally free of personal struggle. Everyone has to battle themselves as much as they battle the world. And Mark Kerr is no exception. He braved addiction and injury to come back and reclaim victory. In addition to Kerr, the film highlights Mark Coleman, who also beat the odds and won. This documentary is an excellent look at the sacrifice and commitment that goes into no holds barred fighting. Check it out.
This movie is interesting even if you dont know the story..........2006-03-09
This documentary was shot at the exact time Mark Kerr was going through a horrible period in his life. It is done somewhat low-budget so don't expect James Earl Jones doing narration but it's an epic story. Unlike others, this film isn't done in the documentary style of flashback and archived clips. The things that happen all happen as they're filming the movie.
Mark Kerr was an amazing fighter and like most of the amazing fighters in the world kinda fell into the sport. He was a wrestler and after college needed something to do for money. Putting his talents to use solved that problem.
I suggest that anyone who watches this movie watch some real Mixed Martial Arts fights beforehand. Give yourself that taste of what MMA is like and then you'll understand how much of a struggle it can be to train and compete.
P.S. It's been a while since I've seen the movie but in the bonus features, watching Bas knock out Rodrigo (i think), is probably one of the most classic shots ever.
The Smashing Machine - The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr.......2006-02-17
This biography is well worth looking at if you're into ultimate fighting. This movie gives you an interesting perspective of the struggles and triumphs of a brutal sport. It starts with Marks first fight, the many years of triumphant wins and drug addiction. Mark Kerr is one hell of a fighter, on and of the mat. The disk also comes complete with special features. Highly recommended!
Push comes to shove.......2005-12-27
The movie "The Smashing Machine" follows the story of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. It discusses his rise to the top of the MMA world, and his unyielding battle with his own personal demons.
Overall, the movie is interesting. However, I think it paints a really negative image of the MMA world. Mostly because they (the producers) portray the story of Kerr and Colemen, as two men who ended up in this world of MMA by mere happenstance. And that neither of them really wanted to do it, but instead that they were forced to do it because of the circumstances of their lives (Colemen and Kerr both needed money).
But the story is powerful, and Kerr gives one a glimpse into the mind of an extreme fighter. You find yourself cheering him on, hoping that he will be able to bash everyone's head in.
Enjoy!
Could have been much better.......2005-12-09
This film held my interest throughout its one and a half hours. I am not sure that it would hold the interest of someone who wasn't a fan of mixed martial arts (MMA).
Some of the elements needed for a great documentary were in the film - close, gritty footage of Mark Kerr in some of his darkest moments, access to some of the most important people in his life, footage from his training and fights - but what was missing was a good narrator or expert commentator.
The shaky camera footage, quick cuts, blood-red filters used during some of the fight scenes, heavily edited fights, and the dubbed-in cheering will not satisfy MMA fans, and will only serve to disgust and upset people who have never seen a real Pride fighting tournament.
If you are an MMA fan, you will find this film worth watching. If you are not, you should watch a few tournaments before watching this film.

Great early gem...The German Suplex heard 'round the world..........2007-06-06
I know it... I LOVE the early UFC...
I was one of the crazy ones back in the day that really dug this stuff... now everyone loves it.
My buddies got together for this pay-per-view and were treated to some of the greatest early UFC fights. Joe Son vs. Hackney is very memorable for the overt low blows, Hackney vs. Gracie is excellent, but the Dan Severn vs. Anthony Macias fight is outstanding. A heavyweight wrestler vs. a lightweight kickboxer. That is every heavyweight wrestlers dream, and my dream to see an actual German Suplex done for real to a guy. I only saw it on video games and pro-wrestling. I never realized it could be done legitimately TWICE!!! The German Suplexes are worth the disk alone.
Another historic early DVD from the UFC...
The first big turning point.......2007-05-30
This was the debut of Dan Severn. The man who saved the league.
Royce Gracie, the enormously skilled superstar who'd become the face of UFC, was growing disillusioned and wanted out. Which was very bad news, since Ken Shamrock had becoming an absolute enigma (one withdrawal and two no-shows between 2-4) and no one else was even close to taking the mantle.
They took a big gamble on Severn, a pure amateur wrestler already well into his 30's, who had only a few days notice to get ready for UFC 4. The deal reportedly was that he would be allowed to compete again only if he made it to the final. If he didn't, Gracie's departure would leave UFC with no marketable superstars and eventually turn it into a footnote in MMA history.
Severn's first match (which alone makes this worth watching) pitted him against a somewhat erratic yet relentless striker. Severn takes the initiative in spectacular highlight-reel fashion and never looks back. In the semifinal, Severn exchanges dramatics for cold-blooded efficiency, crushing the unprepared alternate in less than half a minute. With his future secured, he turns his attention to the indominatble legend, Royce Gracie, producing at least one of the three best tournament finals of all time.
In between are a strange back-and-forth battle between Keith Hackney and Joe Son, Steve Jennum's (who?) unusually difficult victory over boxer Melton Bowen, and Hackney's valiant but ultimated doomed attempt to take down Gracie. Also included is a fast and furious exhibition match (the precursor to the Superfight) between Jason Fairn and Guy Mezger.
A somewhat uneven tournament, but in the end, the sport has made its mark, and that's what matters.
EXCELLENT EVENT, GREAT GROUND WORK.......2007-02-10
UFC 4
REVENGE OF THE WARRIORS
I was so happy when I learned that they were releasing the original UFC events, this one in particular because this was when Dan "The Beast" Severn debuted in the UFC. Dan is one of my all time favorite mixed martial arts fighters, and this one in particular was amazing.
1.ROYCE GRACIE VS RON VAN CLIEF-this fight was the typical Gracie fight in that it was a quick dominant fight. As soon as they went at each other Royce had him on the ground and tore into him until making Ron tap to a rear naked choke hold. Over all exactly what you would think happen back during the reign of the Gracie's.5/5
2.JOE SON VS KEITH HACKNEY-this has to be one of the dirtiest, but funniest fights ever recorded on video. And I have to say that Hackney is a cold messed up dude. Joe Son basically controlled the entire bout, so Keith decided to punch Joe in the crotch repeatedly until Joe Son taped to a choke. This fight was definitely messed up on Hackney's part.5/5
3.MELTON BOWEN VS STEVE JENNUM-this was am interesting fight, simply because Steve and Melton trade some nice blows. Even though Steve controls most of the fight at the beginning Melton still found his way back to his feet. But it seemed as soon as he got up, he was slammed right back down. And at about the five minute mark Melton tapped out to a killer arm bar.5/5
4.DAN SEVERN VS ANTHONY MACIAS-finally we come to the last of the first round fights, and it happens to be the debut of the Beast. You can't really call this one a fight because it was over at one minute and forty five seconds. But even though it was a short bout it was still exciting, after to vicious belly to back suplexes to Anthony from Severn, Anthony tapped to a rear naked choke.5/5
5.ROYCE GRACIE VS KEITH HACKNEY-Gracie had a harder time this time around in the second round against Hackney. In fact Hackney tore up Royce's face a little with some nice strikes. But Gracie still took the fight after applying a killer arm bar to Hackney.5/5
6.MARCUS BOSSETT VS DAN SEVERN-apparently Steve Jennum could not continue that night so Bossett won a toss to face Severn. This was another quick fight, soon after Severn took him down Bossett tapped out.5/5
7.JASON FAIRN VS GUY MEZGER-that's right a young Guy Mezger fought at UFC 4 in a fight before the main event of the evening. This was a great fight to view because Mezger dominated this fight, he beat this guy so bad that they threw in the towel for Fairn.5/5
8.ROYCE GRACIE VS DAN SEVERN-this fight is definitely a classic in my mind, this was 16 minutes of two greats going at it. Sure this fight took place on the ground for most of the fight, but this was still an excellent bout. Gracie would end up winning the tournament that night but Severn proved he belonged in there with a legend.5/5
Over all this was an excellent event, and is worth your money. Plus there is a great interview with Severn in the special features.
Gracie v. Severn- A True UFC Classic.......2006-07-26
The Gracie-Severn bout may not be the most explosive bout ever, but it shows what a true Martial Artist Royce Gracie is. After watching these two go at it, with Severn seemingly having the upper hand throughout, the ending is pure Gracie: calm, quiet and effective. Royce is so methodical through this entire bout it is a blast to watch. While many of the other bouts may feature more explosive punches & kicks, this one shows that perseverance is just as important as any other element. In my opinion, this is what truly solidified Royce Gracie as a legend.
If you like the UFC and you haven't seen this one, get it!
Gracie v. Severn.......2006-05-03
Tulsa, Oklahoma. 1994..
Royce Gracie is back after not being able to complete the competition at UFC 3, where he won a fight against Kimo, but became dehydrated and could not continue on to the next fight. 51-year-old Ron Van Clief takes on Royce in the first round. Royce takes him down and imposes his will on him, softening him up with elbows and punches until Van Clief opens himself up for the choke... it's a standard Royce Gracie fight.
Joe Son v. Keith Hackney. Son is freakishly religious.. almost scary. This fight is a true callback and testament to when there really were "no rules" in the UFC. While on the ground, Hackney punches Joe Son directly in the nuggets maybe 3-5 times... and it's completely legal.
At this UFC event, we get our first look at Dan Severn, who would later come to be nicknamed "The Beast". You can see that he is a wrestler, through and through. In his fights, he manhandles his opponents, but only thinks to strike them occasionally. His fight with Royce in the finals is a 16-minute cuddling session. He lies on top of Royce for what feels like an eternity until Royce is finally able to submit him from the bottom. Gracie is patient and composed, as always, and again it pays great dividends to his legacy in the UFC.
Before the final fight, however, there is an exhibition/qualifying match to determine which of 2 ponytailed fighters will be able to fight in the coming UFC 5. It's Guy Metzger v. Jason Fairn. All I can recall about this fight is two ponytails flailing about for a few minutes, until the fight ends with Metzger winning, although not looking all that impressive in victory. It looked like the lead singers from Poison and Warrant got together and fought inside the octagon... Pretty funny, but entertaining.
This UFC marks the beginning of the emergence of stars other than Royce Gracie in mixed martial arts. This is a fine piece of MMA history to add to your collection.
Bonus features include: A Dan Severn hall of fame interview and a UFC 4 retrospective given by a MMA journalist.

The UFC that changed my mind about the Gracies..........2007-06-06
UFC Classics, Vol. 3 is the UFC that changed my mind about the Gracies. Watch and you'll see why.
It was another great addition, filled with testosterone and mismatches. The first bout is scary, a 500 pound man vs. a 200 pound man. 'nuff said.
Kimo vs. Gracie... Kimo became my hero in this DVD. I thought his "religious martyr" gimmick was risky, yet hilarious. Kicking butt for the Lord. Magic!
And it seemed to work, as he pushed Gracie hard, bringing about the most disgraceful ending to a match every. It changed my mind about the Gracies. Watch and you'll see why I was immensely disappointed in someone who I respected (and still respect).
Modern fans might not appreciate it with the evolution of the sport in the modern day. But in its time, it was spectacular.
It's all too real........2007-03-26
Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson?
Red Sox and White Sox winning the World Series in consecutive years?
Phil Mickelson taking a third major?
The band out on the field?
Kids' stuff. You want bizarre, you want unpredictable, you want oh-my-god-what-the-hell-is-going-on...take a look at UFC 3.
All the elements were in place for a titanic Royce Gracie/Ken Shamrock rematch in the final. Opposite brackets, each with beatable, untested opponents. Both principles rested and in good health. Either they'd face each other, or one would get toppled in an incredible upset, and we've have a brand new rivalry on our hands. It had to happen. Right?
It starts out reasonably enough. Keith Hackney, a scrappy little bulldog from the mean streets of Chicago, takes on the gargantuan but immobile and clumsy Emmanuel Yarborough, with predictable results. Next, Shamrock grapples with veteran judo fighter Cristophe Leninger, who gives a valiant match. Then Canadian trash-talking pummeller Harold Howard trades punches with hometown hero Roland Payne, an action-packed slugfest with a suitably spectacular conclusion.
And then things get weird.
No one could've predicted this. But then, isn't that the beauty of sports? Who would've thought that the script would go off the rails so suddenly. And that Steve Jennum would have to step up to save the day. (Steve who? You'll see...)
UFC was pitched as a completely real contest. In the third tournament, it was almost too much so. That's what makes it a must-see.
True "Ultimate Fighting" Before Everyone Did Jiujitsu.......2007-02-19
Modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a hybrid sport where fighters train in both striking (usually a combination of techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, and Taekwondo) and grappling (Brazilian Jiujitsu and wrestling). A thick rulebook exists that prohibits such attacks as biting, hair pulling, eye gouging, hitting to the groan, kneeing/elbowing a "downed" opponent, etc... Even clothing is regulated, with padded gloves and mouthpieces required to minimize damage.
That, however, is not how it used to be. In the "old days" of ultimate fighting, martial artists from completely different spheres of combat would come together in no-holds barred battles of complete domination. There were no weight limits, You might see a huge sumo wrestler battle a karate master or a boxer trying to punch out a ninja. You couldn't be disqualified for biting (though you could be fined), hair-pulling was legal, and punching to the groin happened all the time. During this "iron age" of MMA, fighters battled to answer the age-old question of which martial arts style was the most powerful - and "hybrid" martial artists were almost non-existant.
UFC 3 is the epitomy of this age, and one of the best MMA tournaments you will ever watch. MMA legends like Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock are at the top of their games during this event, and matches that would NEVER happen in modern times (such as the legendary sumo vs. kenpo karate fight where the cage is broken during a sumo-slam) are common-place. While the very last match is a bit of a let-down, almost every single one before it is high-intensity combat that will make your jaw drop. If you want to see what true ultimate fighting is all about, this is THE DVD to purchase.
UFC 3 - The American Dream.......2007-02-09
This DVD of UFC 3 is a historically great one because it marks the first UFC event to be won by someone other than Royce Gracie but also the only 8 man tournament to be won by an alternate. The matches are your classic old school UFC brawls for the most part, with the finesse of Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie throw in there.
The fights are all good, starting with Emmanuel Yarbrough (600 lbs) vs Keith Hackney (200 lbs). This event also debuts Kimo, the first man to expose Royce's weaknesses in the octagon by pounding him so much in his match that after Royce beat him and moved in, Royce could not continue in the tournament. You will also see many entertaining personalities, which the UFC always supplied back then. Aside from Kimo and his manager, Joe Son, we also get Roland Payne who breaks bricks on his shins and Harold Howard, a Canadian Karateka who is not all their in the head.
Buy this UFC event if you are a fan of the old school UFC or just want to compare it to the events of today. They are not the most technical matches but they are still very exciting.
Not Great.......2006-10-01
I am a fan of 1,2 and 4. UFC 3 is a bit of a let down. Still in its' infancy, the UFC was more of a circus event then a sport. One dimensional fighters being thrown into a cheap looking octagon(buy a good latch for the door which keeps breaking open). With the exception of Royce, Shamrock and Kimo, none of the fighters on this card ever went anywhere in MMA. In fact, they all ended up with losing records. This card is weak because of the injuries. Gracie and Shamrock couldn't continue so no-name replacements took their place. Unfairly, a replacement got put in the final match without having to fight at all in any pre-lims. There is on 18 minutes of actual fighting spread over 7 matches, with a lot of time being filled by inane Jim Brown chatter. The bonus interview with Royce is less than a minute long and adds nothing to his match with Kimo. I saw this one originally live, but I still bought it anyway now that it finally got released on dvd. If you are curious about MMA, I certainly don't recommend that you start with this dvd.

This reel of highlights from Ultimate Fighting Championships, tournaments in which men enter an octagonal ring and do battle by punching, wrestling, and kicking, begins by showing rotund Tank Abbot, who has since moved on to comparatively benign environs of World Championship Wrestling, being kicked to defeat by a much smaller opponent. Those sorts of surprises abound in Ultimate Fighting. The outcome is impossible to predict in a bout that may end, as one does on this video, with a flurry of punches followed by a knee delivered to a defensive opponent's lowered face, culminating by a final kick to the side of the head of the suddenly wobbly fighter. This sort of action will no doubt horrify boxing purists, and some of it will be too brutal for the tastes of those who prefer the cartoonish violence of professional wrestling. And while most of these matches feature fights between opponents who, rather than brawling mindlessly, cagily circle each other and choose their opportunity to strike, when the action does happen, it's vicious. Many of the matches draw blood, and it's not unusual for a man to suddenly pound his opponent unconscious. If you're a fan of the novel sport of Ultimate Fighting, you'll love this, but prepared to be shocked if you're not. --Robert J. McNamara

Some shortened fights but overall a good DVD.......2006-09-13
Now here are the fights in order on the disc. It starts with like 5 shortened(edited) fights and then shows you whole matches half way through.
HUGO DUORTE VS TANK ABBOT-great short fight, certainly one of the more memorabe endings.
MARK COLEMEN VS PETE WILLIAMS-they only show the overtime but I am glad I saw at least that portion.
VITOR BELFORT VS VANERLEI SILVA-quick match, you can guess why most likely.
JERRY BOHLANDER VS. TITO ORTIZ-they pick the fight up about 10 minutes into the round and pick show the rest of the fight into the overtime. Kinf of a borign match but you can see that Tito found the ground game early on in his career and stayed there. Also look for Ken Shamrock coaching Bohlander.
BAS RUTTEN VS. TSUYOSHI KOSAKA-they pick this one up about 9 minutes and 40 seconds into it. This is a real dissapointment as it would have been nice to see the entire fight.
TITO ORTIZ VS GUY MEZGER-big John Mcarthy, you gonna call this one or are you gonna let this guy die? Again Ken Shamrock was coaching Tito's opponent.
TRE TELLIGMAN VS PERDO RIZZO-part 1. This is where the DVD starts showing the fights in their entirety. This is a great short match.
FRANK SHAMROCK VS TITO ORTIZ-great match, if you haven't seen it I won't spoil it. I know that I was very pleased with the ending.
ROYCE ALGER VS EUGENE JACKSON-oh man what a great(fun) fight!
BRAD KOHLER VS STEVE JUDSON-you have got to see this just to see Kohler's arms. They are seriously the biggest pipes in the UFC.
YAMAMIYA VS EUGEN JACKSON-not a great fight but a good boxing match and a good ending.
PEDRO RIZZO VS TSUYOSHI KOSAKA-slow match but some viscious kicks from Rizzo.
So some of the fights are short, some are edited, all are worth watching.
Quite Horrible.......2006-07-11
Just terrible and not worth the money. The fights are horrible and the fighters have very little skill. Puchase PRIDE instead where the best fighters in the WORLD come to fight.
Steve Judson and Mark Coleman probably don't own this DVD.......2006-03-17
These are some great fights from the mid-stages of the UFC. The DVD takes you from UFC 17 through UFC 23, selecting some of the best fights to be revisited in this volume. Although the bulk of the footage is just from really good fights, there are a few legendary knockouts here.
We get to see Tito at the beginning stages of his rise. We see him here in UFC 18 & 19 - and we also get to see him getting his first taste of talent at the level of Frank Shamrock early in his career.
Pedro Rizzo makes a few appearances on this collection. His strikes are always blazing and precise. Eugene Jackson also has a few good fights included.
This is a good collection. There are certainly boring moments, but the action always picks up quickly. The knockouts of Mark Coleman and Steve Judson alone are worth the price of the DVD. These fights were previously only available on VHS - so they make a fine addition to your UFC and mixed martial arts collection.
MORE OLD SCHOOL!.......2006-02-10
Just like volume one... if you are a fan of MMA, BUY THIS NOW!!
Kinda sucks, only 2 good fights........2004-11-25
Disappointing. The Bas Rutten vs. Tsuyoshi Kosaka is good, just because I like Bas. Steven Judson vs. Brad Kohler a good one, Brad Kohler knocks Steven Judson out cold, with one right hook kinda punch right to the head, and then Steven Judson flops kinda lifeless to the ground. Every other fight was disappointing; they just circle around batting jabs at each other, or the just lay on top of each other for the whole time. The announcers get really annoying, right from the beginning. And they don't show the whole fights, they cut in like 9 min into it, or skip a middle part. There are 12 fights all together, but I wouldn't recommend this, because even the Bas Rutten fight isn't that great. Maybe Vol.1 is better I don't know.

A must own PrideFC DVD for all MMA lovers!.......2006-10-30
This DVD had some great fights on it. As a Mixed Martial Artist myself I had to get this DVD. I have quite a collection of PrideFC and UFC DVDs and this one is one of my top 5 favorites. I even picked up a few Submission moves from this DVD which I have used when I'm training in MMA.
The first fight is with Big Nog vs. Heath Herring. This was a great fight between two masters of the ground game. Heath Herring doesn't get the credit he deserves but he is a fighter I do enjoy watching. I learned the Anaconda move from watching this fight but I don't want to give up any spoilers.
The second fight was with Fedor and Randelman which is already a classic fight in MMA history. If you never saw this fight you are going to be amazed when you do and you will see why Fedor is so great.
The rest of the fights are awesome as well. Wait until you see the fight with Arona and Rampage Jackson. Your jaw is going to drop again like it will when you see the Fedor and Randleman fight.
This is all about the Rampage!.......2006-08-03
In all honesty, if you are a fan of MMA in any way, shape, or form... you MUST own this DVD! One of the most incredible moments in MMA history takes place on this disc and you simply do not want to miss it. I watch it over and over again and it blows me away each and every time. Seriously, buy this DVD. You won't regret it!
Another classic.......2006-07-10
A classic event with every fight being highly entertaining. the main event features one of the most unbelievable momemnts you will ever see.
One of the better fight videos.......2006-04-09
The show opens with the Gracie hunter Kazushi Sakuraba in a rematch with Nino Elvis Schembri. In their previous fight Sakuraba was dominating until Schembri kneed him in the head, and Schembri picked up a surprise win. Here in this fight, Sakuraba comes out in pajamas to make the point that the prior fight was just a bad dream, and now he's awake. Sakuraba must be considered the favorite to win, going in, since he has a much stronger reputation. Can Schembri pull out another upset?
The next match is an elimination bout to determine who will challenge Wanderlei Silva for the Pride championship belt. Ricardo Arona, a Brazilian grappler, goes against Quinton Rampage Jackson, a black fighter with a lot of personality and a victory over Kevin Randleman. Arona is known for his many Brazilian jiu jitsu championships, and Jackson is known for lifting his opponents high off the ground and slamming their heads down on the mat. You have to watch when you do that, because you may end up cracking heads if you're not careful. I can't say there is any particular favorite in this matchup.
I suppose that 7 foot tall Semmy Schilt could be considered the favorite in his match with Russian sambo expert Sergei Kharitonov, but not by much despite his 9 inch height advantage and sizeable weight advantage. Kharitonov is a master of body positioning and grappling, so what he needs to do is get the big man down and nullify his size. Schilt is a great striker, with knees and fists, and not just a big guy. When Schilt is on his back he uses his awesome grip to restrain the other man's wrists.
In a battle of smooth technique against brawn, star grappler Naoya Ogawa, a confident crowd favorite, takes on the likeable Giant Silva. Bas Rutten begins the interview with Silva by standing on a stool and looking down at the 7 foot 2 Goliath. Silva has an awkward fighting style, so the question is really whether his extreme size advantage is enough against Ogawa's technique.
Master grappler Hidehiko Yoshida provides the very first MMA challenge to newcomer Mark Hunt of New Zealand. Hunt is one of the best strikers in the world, a champion kick boxer who is new to mixed martial arts. He is pretty chubby, but that doesn't hurt him. One thing I will tell you in advance about this fight is that Mark Hunt clearly got a lot of good training in grappling because he isn't helpless at it. Back in the early days of MMA Yoshida would have killed Hunt, but these days a guy like Hunt can get a crash course in grappling and put up a good showing.
The great submission artist Antonio Minotauro Nogueira takes on Heath Herring, a big strong guy who can hit. Herring is known for his unique hair styles, with different designs shaved into his head. It's Herring's toughness against Minotauro's wizardry on the ground.
The final match is world champion Fedor Emelianenko, ranked as the world's toughest man by most MMA fans, against Kevin Randleman, charismatic black fighter with bleached blonde crewcut. Randleman is coming off an upset knockout victory over Mirko Crocop, but now he is in the ring against the world's toughest man, so obviously he has his work cut out. Fedor is such a mild mannered man. He reminds me of my father. He's always pleasant and cheerful, never excited, and he generally has a gentle smile ready for whoever is unfortunate enough to be in the ring against him. Obviously Fedor is an overwhelming favorite to win, but can Randleman pull out another stunning upset? He has knockout power and a puncher's chance.
The Countdown Continues...............2006-01-28
This is the second part to The Heavyweight 2004 Pride Fighting Championships Grand Prix Tournament, and it is Flat out Electrifying to say the least. Watch you will continue to Final Conflict 2004. You know you want to!

"The most intense fights from the movies," promises the new FlixMix interactive compilation, and, quibbles aside, it delivers. A 50-minute testosterone-enhanced mix tape of 16 high-octane film clips, this sequel to the Boogeymen horror compilation is a marked improvement, if only for the visceral quality of these attention-grabbing highlights. From pounding fistfights (Brad Pitt's bare-knuckle brawl in Snatch) to blood-spattered gunfights (Al Pacino and his "Little Friend" in Scarface) to clanging swordfights (Gladiator) to eye-popping martial arts spectacles starring Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, and Jackie Chan, the diversity is inspired, though the quality of clips varies from excellent to adequate and too many are full frame. These short, sharp shots, often only a sample of a much longer fight (where is the fiery climax of Legend of the Drunken Master?), will leave you hungry for more, and the brevity keeps the energy from flagging for even a second. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:
16 clips of fights from movies, and they are all pretty good.......2006-07-23
I was rather surprised that I enjoyed this so much. I have seen all the fights before, except a couple. There was one with liam neeson as a boxer that I will have to check out. The rest are short clips from fights in movies like Fist of Legend, Rumble in the Bronx, and that retarded one from Timecop.
Then as a bonus you have hong kong legend TSUI HARK doing a commentary. And since he worked on some of these movies, we get some very good insight. Not one of the better commentaries I have heard, but still very enjoyable.
The rest of the extras are all minor but all fun. The best is a featurette on how to stage your own movie fights, stats on the fighters in these movies, and trivia.
This disc is only 50 minutes long but does have good 5.1 sound, and it is something you will watch at least a couple of times.
Good Stuff for its value.......2005-12-27
Less than 10 bucks u basically getting a multiple fighting and action scene from several movie, half which is asian import hk, and rest is u.s. Half of which is not that good, the one that i like is jet lee one and martial art, maybe just me, sound is actually not bad at all, worth buying.
Dissapointing.......2003-12-27
The only 2 REAL ultimate fights on this is from Blade, and The legend of Drunken Master. I mean Scarface? Gladiator? SNATCH?! They are good movies, but those scenes DO NOT belong on an Ultimate Fights Dvd. Hopefully they can do a Vol.2 with Blade 2, Jet Li, Matrix, stuff like that FIGHTS! I don't want a dvd of brawls or a long crappy shootout.
Not real.......2002-05-15
This video was not worth the money it is just scenes from movies
at least Ultimate street brawls has real fights.
Ultimate Fights = Awesome!!.......2002-05-06
What a cool DVD! I've never seen anything quite like it before and the quality of the fight selection was really impressive. The best part was where they teach you how to stage a fight just like in the movies! Dont miss this one!!

Another cold winter in Japan.......2006-07-25
This night of Pride Fighting begins with Pride veteran Guy Mezger going up against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, twin brother of heavyweight champion Rodrigo. These two skilled fighers all but cancel each other out in the first round. There's not all that much happening here, but the fight gets a bit more exciting in the 2nd round. The fight is not too entertaining and it goes to a decision.
Old-time UFC veteran Ron Waterman makes a quick statement with his fight against Valentijn Overeem.
Rodrigo Gracie then takes on Yuki Sasaki. After getting through a very uninteresting first round, we are treated to the same thing in rounds two and three. This one goes to a decision.
Alistair Overeem v. Volk Ataev-
Ataev lands one of the most beautiful spinning heel kicks I've ever seen in MMA competition. Upon replay, you see that it doesn't land as flushly as everyone first thinks, but it was enough to drop Overeem to the mat, at least temporarily. This fight ends quickly and unexpectedly, with two highly charged combatants. There is good action in this fight.
Murilo Ninja Rua v. Kevin Randleman-
Pride rising star Murilo Ninja takes on the ever-irritating Kevin Randleman. I was, however, excited for a very good fight. Randleman quickly takes Rua down and attempts to make it another fight in his usual unamusing style of a takedown followed by Randleman lying on top of his opponent until the end of the round... This fight is a good back and forth battle, as Rua is too good to be held down by Randleman. This one is stopped in the 3rd due to a bad cut. Another good fight.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira v. Dan Henderson-
Everyone expected Nogueira to walk through Henderson in this bout. Henderson had actually beaten Nogueira years back, but Nogueira is a different fighter by this point. Everyone was surprised by the way this fight actually played out. Henderson escapes numerous submission attempts by one of the best submission artists in the game. This fight is very exciting and we see technical skill and precision against pure heart... Great fight.
This is a decent event. It starts out very slowly, with little action and it picks up as it progresses. The main event was certainly the highlight of this event.
