Product Description

Packed with epic action, OPEN RANGE is a powerfully gripping story that's never been told until now, and stars Academy Award(R) winners Robert Duvall (1983 Best Actor, TENDER MERCIES) and Kevin Costner (1991 Best Director, DANCES WITH WOLVES), and Academy Award(R) nominee Annette Bening (1999 Best Actress, AMERICAN BEAUTY). A group of free grazers, four men trying to escape their past, are driving cattle and living off the land on the open range -- a place where nature makes the only laws. When a ruthless, evil rancher tries to run them out of town, the men's peaceful existence takes a tumultuous turn and ends in the grittiest, most explosive gunfight on film as two men battle a town for honor, justice, and a way of life that's quickly disappearing.

Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners. In the wake of territorial murder, free-grazing cowboys Boss (Robert Duvall) and Charley (Costner) seek vengeful justice against the ruthless rancher (Michael Gambon) who threatens their law-abiding survival. A feisty ally (the late Michael Jeter, in his next-to-final film role) and a doctor's sister (Annette Bening) offer support during climactic shootouts, masterfully staged with the shock and suddenness of real-life gunfire. Rich in character development and thick-hided humor, this handsome production redeemed Costner's directorial career with a well-told story (by Craig Storper, based on Lauran Paine's novel The Open Range Men), flawless performances, and stunning Canadian locations. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-11

This has become our favorite film...we have watched this every time it came on TV and now at least one or two times every week....It is very well done and there are no lags in it, and was cast very well.

4 out of 5 stars Very Surprising for a Kevin Costner Film.......2007-06-09

I'm really not a big fan of Costner movies, especially when he gets involved with the production/direction of the film. Dances with Wolves - Extended Cut (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) is probably an exception but Waterworld and The Postman were just plain bad productions. Over blown and over written. So here comes "Open Range" and even though I'm a huge western fan I'm questioning if I want to chance it.

I was surprised on so many levels. Of course the cast is exceptional with Robert Duval and Annette Benning staring with Costner. But the story was great, the flow of the film kept you interested, and the look of the movie was outstanding. Costner took the time for character development in his main characters, making each into complex people. Add a great musical score and what else could you hope for.

The story is your basic mean cattle baron trying to wipe out a good-hearted but smaller outfit. In this case the smaller herd is a "free-Grazer", an outfit that travels from range to range. Robert Duval is perfect as Boss Spearman, the tough but fair owner of the herd. Costner plays Charley Waite, his top hand. Along with their two other hands, Mise Harrison & Button, they pitch camp on a range claimed by the local rancher who hates free grazers. After the rancher attacks the camp, killing Mose and severely injuring Button, Boss and Charley decide they must defend their outfit and their way of life. Along the way we discover that Charley used to be a gunfighter. The story builds to the normal Expolsive ending but not before we get to look into each of the main characters and discover their inner-most secrets.

Again, this was such a surprise. As soon as this film came out on DVD I ran right out and bought it. If you are a western fan do not pass this up.

5 out of 5 stars Open Range.......2007-06-02

This is the very best Western movie that has come along in recent times.
There are no frills or cliched dialogue to disrupt what is a gutsy plot and the actors are all at their best in the rolls they play. Authentic costumes and period gear add to this well filmed motion picture.
I recommend it highly to all western buffs.

5 out of 5 stars Open Range~`When character meant something.......2007-05-13

Excellent movie- I saw it on AMC and had to have it.
It reflects the simple method of confronting wrong doers directly, no explanations of why they were evil and wrestling with their motivation. Face them and eliminate the threat. The movie and characters demonstrate that fact throughout the movie and some politicians and the media would do well to emulate this proven methodology.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing back the western.......2007-05-07

If you like westerns, this movie is for you. According to the narration in the "extras", a great deal of thought was done on the sound in addition to the visuals. That is extremely apparent during the first few scenes done in a thunder storm. I actually jumped at one thunder crack. The audio during the final "shoot out" was recorded at a higher volume. As explained inthe narration, that guns like these were really loud. All in all, a good story wrapped up in a good western.

As a director, Wes Craven has been able to infuse his horror movies with humor and some smart, often genuinely creepy, thrills, even on his lowest-budgeted films. As a producer of horror movies, well, his record has been spotty at best. Craven tapped his longtime editor Patrick Lussier to direct Dracula 2000, and the movie ends up with all the good and bad of "a Wes Craven production." A modern-day update of the Dracula legend, the script has some genuinely good ideas. Christopher Plummer (The Insider) takes a relatively juicy role as Van Helsing, owner of an antiques shop specializing in ancient weapons. He takes exception to how his namesake was portrayed in Bram Stoker's classic novel, which he's more than happy to tell his assistant (Jonny Lee Miller, "Sick Boy" from Trainspotting) without telling him the whole story. When Omar Epps leads a band of high-tech criminals to break into Van Helsing's high security vault (thinking that with so much security there's got to be something extremely valuable in there), what they end up stealing is the body of Dracula, who of course awakens from his slumber. When the story shifts to New Orleans, where Van Helsing's estranged daughter is working for the local Virgin Megastore (here metaphor is replaced by product placement), Dracula is drawn to her. The undead start to multiply, and the vampire hunt resumes. Another excellent idea deals with a new origin to Dracula, flashing back to biblical times to explain his aversion to silver and crosses. But there is a downside. Under the inept direction of Lussier the movie is never scary, inspiring instead an occasional feeling of pity for the actors. Overall, this a vampire movie for the mind, not the heart. --Andy Spletzer

5 out of 5 stars Great spin on Dracula.......2007-06-04

I have always have a love for Dracula and Dracula movies and I must say that this one had a great spin on the fabled Dracula. Gerard Butler as Dracula was amazing. He mesmerized with his eyes just as you would imagine Dracula doing. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and seeing Gerard Butler, the rising star, in one of his earlier performances. Gerard Butler fans will love it.

3 out of 5 stars Gerry Butler Must!.......2007-05-12

I originally got this movie only because Gerry Butler is in it, but after watching it, it's really not that bad of a movie. The acting isn't the greatest, but it's still pretty good.

2 out of 5 stars Just another version but oh what a Hot! vampire.......2007-04-06

A so-so version produced by Wes Craven with a slightly different look
at Dracula's origins. Somewhat campy version but not very scary. Gerard
Butler is, however, mesmerizing as Dracula and very sexy and has a very
commanding presence in the role. One of those looks and I'd certainly
bare my throat for him.

1 out of 5 stars karate vampires.....WTF.......2007-03-23

since when have vampires taken karate classes....This film is garbage. Buy Bram Stokers Dracula or the origional Dracula instead.

4 out of 5 stars COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.......2007-02-04

I bought this to add to my Gerard Butler collection....I am a huge fan of Bram Stokers Dracula--I felt the movie had excellent actors in it--and a different take on Dracula--but it just didn't work--weak plot-and it shouldn't have been..
If you like Gerard Butler--GET IT---seeing him in this movie--WOW--it was worth it just for that alone....

Action, adventure and the supernatural pervade this Pokeman-like CGI series in which Monk-in-training Omi, Dragon-guard Dojo, and new warrior students Kimiko, Raimundo, and Clay race to collect ancient artifacts called Shen-Gong-Wu. The evil, formless witch Wuya and her sidekick Jack Spice are also chasing the Shen-Gong-Wu in hopes of harnessing the artifacts' supernatural powers and conquering the world. In each of thirteen episodes, Dojo leads Omi and his fellow students to a different Shen-Gong-Wu. Inevitably, Jack also covets the same artifact and challenges Omi or one of the other students compete in a Xiaolin Showdown--a battle in which each warrior invokes his or her own powers and the powers of a Shen-Gong-Wu already collected to defeat his or her opponent and win possession of both the artifact in question and his or her opponent's artifact. Victory ebbs and flows and, while Jack cheats his way through each challenge, Omi and his fellow students compete honestly and are continually learning and growing as a result of each battle. By the end of the season, evil threatens to triumph over good: Jack and Wuya combine the powers of individual Shen-Gong-Wu to spark a metamorphosis that drastically changes the face of evil. Can Omi and his friends possibly restore good in the world and prevent 10,000 years of darkness? (Ages 6 to 14) --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment for my Child!.......2007-03-15

This is a 2 disk set. The COMPLETE first season. Hours of entertainment for everyone. My son loves this series. I purchased this for Valentines day for him. He watches it every single day. I am so happy I bought this. The price is amazing for a complete season on 2 disks!

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Little Show.......2007-03-04

The first thirteen episodes, presented in this volume, ingratiate you to all the heroes, villains, and recurring characters that appear throughout the series. If you're here, you likely already know the show, so let me get to the set.

The set is typical, with the thirteen episodes spread out over two discs. The first disc contains the first 7 episodes, and the second disc has the last 6 episodes of the first (2003-04) season. I was suprised to find (from the second-to-last episode, and purely by accident) that each episode has six chapters. This is very unorthodox for shows like this (of 22 min), but it's good to have.

The menus are very simple and don't really seem to have much flow to them. To tell the truth, most, if not all, of the menus look like they were derived from Kids' WB! wallpapers.

The casing is average. The two discs come in a black plastic keepcase. As for the cover design... it's a bit uninspiring, but at least there's new art on the front. As you've likely heard, the character formation on the back of the case is not in continuity with the show.

With all that said, the best I can give this set is a four out of five. The lack of extras was disappointing, as well as the fact that the thirteen episodes ended on a cliffhanger. But, the best feature of this set (aside from the episodes in their crisp and clear presentation) is the inclusion of chapter marks in every episode (though, I doubt that I'll ever use them).

4 out of 5 stars Xiolin Shodown (Season-1): Grown Up Kid Stuff!.......2007-01-12

I don't usually write "reviews" (this is my first) but I felt compelled to do so in connection with Xiolin Showdown - Season-1. I caught a couple EPs of this animated series on Sat mornings via my local FOX station and I always found myself enjoying the wacky world of 4 teens (or "near teens") learning the ways of martial arts from their wry humored Xiolin monk master. The thing that truly caught my attention enuff to purchase the entire season was how much the series reminded me of the "Shrek" movies or even the "neo-classic" Disney stuff like "Aladdin". The humor in this series reaches beyond gags funny only to kids to include things that "grown-ups" can appreciate too. To seal the deal, the season-1 story arc traverses your run-of-the-mill action/adventure fare by bringing the teens to a place where they learn more than fighting skills to express important values like compassion, friendship and loyalty. By the last EP of the season you feel like you've witnessed the middle movement of a serious drama where tragedy occurs and you're left longing for the resolve of the next act. I think this series will take many grown-ups by surprise if they can sincerely devote some focused attention to it - and they'll be happier for the laughs along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for Xiaolin Showdown.......2007-01-04

I really enjoyed the few episodes of this show I've managed to catch on the Cartoon Network and I was thrilled to find it available on Amazon. This is one of those shows that's great for both children and adults. As an adult, I can say that there is good subtle humor in addition to the kids humor that makes this show really enjoyable to watch.

5 out of 5 stars "I want to rule the whole world, not just Iceland or Fiji!".......2006-12-03

Although I don't own this DVD, I have seen almost every episode. The show has a great plot and I think it's a great show. Although I like many parts of the show, such as the powers of the shen-gong-wu, one of my favorite parts is the character's personalities. Each is destined to be a great warrior, but they need to trust themselves.

Omi is an orphan and the "head" of the monks. He is destined to be the dragon of the water, but his large ego might get in the way. His favorite shen-gong-wu is probably the 'orb of tornami"(shoots water)

Raimundo is from Brazil, and is the "underdog" of the monks. He is to be the dragon of the wind, but he has darkness within him (he once turned to the dark side) His favorte shen-gong-wu is most likely the 'sword of the storm' (can create fierce winds and powerful storms)

Kimiko is from Tokyo and the only girl of the monks. She is supposed to be the dragon of fire, but she can get a horrible temper. Her favorite shen-gong-wu is probably the 'star hanabi' (shoots fire)

Clay is from Texas and is the muscleman of the group. He is going to be the dragon of earth, and he always talks using western language (Kimiko once said "Will you please stop abusing the English language!?!") His favorite shen-gong-wu is probably the 'fist of tebigong'(gives user great strength)

Jack Spicer is an evil genius wannabee who is constantly yelled at by Wuya, an evil ghost witch. She needs to rely on Jack mostly because she isn't solid. Jack is basically a wimp, and he builds robots (called 'Jackbots')to fight the monks, and to keep him busy. His favorite shen-gong-wu is probably the 'monkey staff'(gives you abilities of a monkey)

Now here is a list of some shen-gong-wu:
Two ton tunic - indestructible armor
Eye of Dashi - shoots lightning
Silk spitter - Shoots webs
Mind reader conch - allows user to read minds
Cahnging Chopsticks - shrinks user
Serpent's Tail - give solid person abilities of a ghost
Reversing Mirror - reverses any shen-gong-wu's effect

Thats basically it. I may have left out some stuff, but that doesn't matter. I highly advise you to watch this series.

Spider-Man takes on Dr. Octopus, the Kingpin, and the Green Goblin, and takes us on a flashback trip to his origins for good measure, in this four-episode arc from the third season of the 1990s animated series. These web-slinging moral tales have none of Batman's sleek style, and the breathless pacing doesn't quite make up for the awkward animation and pedestrian writing, but the episodes are bright, busy, and action packed. --Sean Axmaker

1 out of 5 stars 4 Episodes?.......2007-04-04

It's cool that they put these out, seeing as how THEY HAVEN'T DONE SEASON BOXES YET?? But, 4 episodes for this price and they think this is an Ultimate Villian Showdown?? I don't think so. Just rent it and burn a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD To Own if You Don't Want To Get the Entire Series!.......2006-08-13

As this DVD is directed at what Disney aka BVHE feels is its target audience i.e. kids under 14 and above 3, I cannot fathom the negative responses from adults who lament that just because we don't have full season releases that this DVD therefore sucks. I think the phrase "grow up" comes to mind; although the cartoons here may appeal to a larger, older audience, these are after all cartoons and are aimed at the target audience mentioned earlier. Box sets are clearly out of the financial reach of these young-ins and so for their sake, thankfully we have relatively inexpensive offerings like this one.

Given this, this is actually a very good DVD as it has very strong bonus extras which would appeal to any young fan. The 1967 classic: "The Origins of Spider-Man" although severely dated and poorly preserved is a great collectors' item and allows the young viewer a peak into what animated television was like in the late 60s. Although, the enjoyment level is limited by the old technology, the educational level ranks as very high.

We also get great introductions to each episode by none other than the genius, Stan Lee, himself, the creator of most of the characters showcased on this disc. This in itself is a collectors' item as given his advanced age, it's doubtful fans will be treated to many more candid conversations/interviews with Mr. Marvel himself. "Stan Lee's Soapbox" is a brilliant interview in which the man covers many aspects of the character he created and more importantly, his own world view giving us a glimpse of what makes the man tick, what motivates him etc.

We also get a fun extra for younger viewers in the treasure hunt-like feature of "Rogues' Dossiers" where the viewer gets to play "hide-and-seek" as it were to learn more about Spidey's arch-nemeses. The only hangup I have with this is that they only stopped at 12 villains which means the great Lizard does not feature among other great villains that Spidey has had to face over the years.

The 4 episodes themselves have also been very well chosen:

"Make a Wish" is the modern version of the 1967 classic which re-tells Spidey's origins in flashback form as he relates the story to a young girl at the age of the average target viewer.

"Attack of the Octobot" features Doc Ock and allows for further association of said target viewer by allowing the young girl to assist Spidey on defeating his foe.

"Enter the Green Goblin" is the best episode here and showcases probably the best villain Spidey has ever faced.

"Rocket Racer" again allows for association with the viewer but this time in the older age group of said target audience who also plays a significant part in Spidey's adventure.

Overall, this is a great DVD to have for young Spidey fans and Stan Lee's preaching is very evident here in both obvious and subtle/subliminal forms although never in nauseating excess.

Kids are unlikely to finish watching this DVD without at least remembering the adage: "With great power comes great responsibility" In conclusion and to quote another gem from Stan the Man, "Excelsior!"

3 out of 5 stars Great series... so why are there no season box sets?.......2005-08-03

Spider-Man (1994-1998.)

INTRODUCTION:
In recent years, I have become a fairly big fan of the Spider-Man franchise. This is due in no small part to the success of the recent live-action films and the animated series that still get heavy rotation on some channels. One of the best Spider-Man animated series was the one that aired in the middle of the nineties Saturday mornings on FOX kids. Now, several years later after this series has been cancelled, DVDs of it have been released (no doubt to cash in on the whole movie thing reviving the series.) Read on for my reviews.

OVERVIEW:
The nineties take on an animated Spider-Man series aired from 1994-1998. This was the first animated series to focus not only on action, but rather on the same sort of three-dimensional characterization and plotlines as the comics. Unlike most Spider-Man series which are set in the present, this one is set in the not-so-distant future - identifiable by the level of technology and the fact that everyone uses laser guns rather than standard guns. The series featured over fifty episodes, most of which were mini-series components. The series aired successfully for roughly three to four years, and has since been put back into syndication on Toon Disney and ABC Family, as a part of the Jetix lineup of shows.

REVIEW:
Overall, this is probably my favorite animated Spider-Man series. It's the one I grew up watching, and it's got the best storylines and characterization, as well as ongoing storylines that only add to the overall appeal. There are some inaccuracies to the original comic stories, but to be honest, doesn't EVERY animated Spider-Man series have that same problem (for instance, in the comics, the Green Goblin came BEFORE the Hobgoblin, but in this series it's vice versa.) I was also a bit frustated by everyone using laser guns (obviously done so parents wouldn't complain.) And since when is the Kingpin a technical genius? Oh, well. Despite these little flaws here and there, this series has a LOT of redeeming value. Of all the animated takes on Spidey, the nineties series is my favorite.

DVD:
Sadly, the individual DVDs of this series are a bit weak, not to mention overpriced. They lack any real extras. Accordingly, what I recommend you do is hold off and see if they ever release box sets that have the complete seasons in them. Many TV shows are getting these kinds of releases, so hopefully one for this series is in the near future.

OVERALL:
To put it simply, good series, bad DVD release. When the hell are we gonna get this series in season box sets!? Whoever owns the rights to this series would be smart to release them soon, since the franchise's popularity is at an all-time high due to the success of the movies. Steer clear of these DVD releases unless you find them in the budget bin. Hold off until box sets come out.

4 out of 5 stars Look out! Here Comes the Spider-Man..........2005-05-04

....the grand-kid (now 3) is into super-heroes ever since the Spiderman movies and The Incredibles DVD. And he also gets excited whenever he sees The Batman. I stumbled across this when I was looking for something a little more mature than his regular Sesame Street type videos (which he still loves, but this gives him a variety). While it has Spiderman's origin story told again (to a little girl who is Webhead's greatest fan) and some 'only in New York' scenarios such as the female jamaican cabby who comes to the aid of the Webhead, the grand kid still is a bit frightened at the Green Goblin. He calls the Goblin "Monster" and edges near his paw-paw for protection. Overall, the web swinging and the sticking on the walls alone are enough to keep him into it. This may be a better show for him when he gets older...but hey! For all other Spiderman fans, this is a great video of the 80's series that adequately touch all the bases. Additionally Stan the Man Lee shows up in the extras. That's gotta be Webhead gold..

4 out of 5 stars DVD's damn cool!.......2003-07-08

This DVD is really sweet for Spider-fans! It has four episodes from the third season of SpiderMan. The bonus materials are a 1967 ep of the old series(REALLY funny), a rogues galleries profile, and a speech by Stan Lee. The Four eps star a two-parter with Spider-Man's biggest fan and Doc Ock, The Green Goblin, and The Rocket Racer. It's great

4 out of 5 stars Jackie!.......2007-06-05

All in all, I found this to be a pretty good film. I just have one burning question: Why, when I'm putting this DVD in my player in 2007, am I seeing an ancient home video ad for Jean-Claude Van Damme's "Kickboxer"? I mean seriously, WTF?

4 out of 5 stars Back to basics.......2007-02-21

I've only seen this movie once over a year ago, so it's not as fresh in my mind as it could be, but I can at least offer some things.
Unlike his other 4 installments of the police story series, this one doesent have really any comedic elements. It's a straight up drama/action movie. It came off a little depressing from what I remember, but it still had a pretty uplifting ending. There is a fight towards the end that may not be to that long, but still makes you realize why you starting liking Jackie Chan.
I won't waste time describing the plot because it's listed, so if you read it you can kind of see how this is more of a serious movie.
I still enjoyed it and again it has this the unique-ness that is Hong Hong cinema.
I'm waiting on my copy of this movie that should be coming in the mail any day now and I'll probably get a better picture of it once i see it again.

Like the other two movies in what I call the "Return to Hong Kong Trilogy" (New Police Story, The Myth, Rob B Hood) I recommend seeing this one as well. Whether you'll like it really depends on your tastes, I can't really say for sure!

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile entry.......2007-01-04

An uneven movie but it satisfies the cravings of ardent Jackie Chan fans. A lot of emoting by Jackie and not as much fun to watch as his other movies.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Jackie CAN act!.......2006-12-29

This has to be the darkest Jackie Chan movie I've seen. But, that is not a bad thing. Here, we get to see Jackie expand his acting to the point of him being driven to tears as a malicious group of kids execute his team members one by one in front of him during a botched raid.

A New Police Story has Chan playing the disgraced inspector who must come back from alcoholism to bring justice for his fallen comrades. Enter a young man who mysteriously wants to help the fallen officer out. Of course, you don't know why until the end, but suffice it to say, he is the comedic relief at times and until the end, you have to wonder why he's there. What are his motives? Is he good or bad?

The unfortunate thing with this movie is some of it has been digitally enhanced to remove wires, but I can understand why. Unlike the first Police Story (which this has no connection with the previous characters), safety regulations are probably tougher now than they were when the first Police Story was shot. Plus, the budget is bigger and they can rehearse stunts. Of course, with Jackie Chan pushing 50, it's going to be tougher for him to recover from serious injuries. But, this doesn't detract from the action that occurs and believe me, there is some great stunt work in this movie.

The fight scenes are fast and furious, but don't expect there to be a lot. This is a story that hinges more on Jackie's character redeeming himself, both with the police force as well as his fiancée that never stopped loving or believing in him, even when the inspector himself felt he was a disgrace. Many might not like it, but for me, it was refreshing to see the focus more on Jackie's acting and his character rather than the actual fighting.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, possibly even more than the first Police Story. It's more polished and Jackie's acting is superb. There is still the funny humor in it and the use of props during the fights, especially the Lego fight and how can you not forget the skyscraper escape down the side of the building? Wow!

This is a must see. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars whoa...........2006-12-23

I purchased New Police Story recently, and after watching it with some friends, we all looked at each other and stated the above: WHOA. I grew up with Jackie in some hilarious movies, and I knew he had starred in movies with a serious flair, but this took it to a higher level. To see him perform as a once highly accomplished Police office who has fallen from grace, and the reasons behind it is truly refreshing.

Jackie Chan is in my eyes one of the greatest martial arts movie stars, and his resume adds substance to it. But this was almost like a passsing of the torch to Nicholas Tse, a rising star in HK, and hopefully for the whole world. They worked well together, and the chemistry with the other co-stars such as Daniel Wu, Tak-Bun Wong, Alva Chung, and others is simply incredible. But that is to be expected with the man Jackie Chan.

As with the many movies he's in, there is comedy that I believe is placed in the right places. Nicholas Tse plays a good part as a happy-go-lucky person that irritates an emotionally scarred Chan at first, but proves to be his guardian angel in the end.

The extras on the DVD is good, but are not subtitled. A small problem, but it doesn't wipe out the entertainment value. The bloopers are one of my favorites during the end credits, and regardless of what language it may be in, it will bring a smile to your face.

I actually found myself watching the music video that Mr. Chan produced (ok it's not 50 Cent or All American Rejects, but c'mon...). It was fun to watch, and the song itself was pretty solid. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Overall, New Police Story is worth watching, if anything, for the action scenes and dark humor. I recommend this movie for all Jackie Chan fans, for this highlights his skill, both in action and in drama, in a well-rounded form. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I believe it's worth the high rating, so I say watch it for yourself and then make your decision.

Showdown in Little Tokyo is a 1991 martial arts action-comedy that, in pitting Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee as L.A. cops against Japanese drug dealers, plays like a B-movie Tango and Cash or Lethal Weapon 2 (both released just two years before). Between career highs in Rocky IV (1985) and Universal Soldier (1992), Lundgren looked as if he might make it big at the box office, and clearly wanting to be the new Schwarzenegger he is here directed by Mark L Lester, who had earlier helmed Ah-nold's Commando (1985). In the event both actor and director headed for straight-to-video territory, while Lee (Bruce's son) went on to The Crow. The 75-minute running time suggests the studio lost confidence and seriously cut the movie though, as the space between the action is filled with nothing but cringe-inducing dialogue, thriller clichés, and Lundgren "romancing" Tia Carrere, it still makes sense. Basing its title on John Carpenter's 1986 fantasy-comedy Big Trouble in Little China and anticipating Rush Hour (1998), Showdown in Little Tokyo alternates between crude tongue-in-cheek moments and action so ludicrous it's unintentionally hilarious . A camp disaster that simply defies belief, this is so-bad-it's-good entertainment. --Gary S. Dalkin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For.......2007-07-01

I enjoyed this movie very much. I do not go to an action 90's movie
expecting to see Sir Laurence Olivier. Nor do I expect Lundgren to become
the Govenor of California. This movie is fantasy, if you pay your money
and expect Hamlet, you are guilty of a poor investment.

The movie is exactly what I thought it would and should be. Sure there
are disturbing segments, but no more so than an esoteric study such as
"The Hours". Honestly, is the genre and dialog any worse than "Lethal
Weapon"? Are the Asian slurs and stereotypes any different than "Black
Rain"

"You get what you pay for. . . ." and with this movie and the proper
release of reality, cinematic snobery and (yes) good taste, you will get
even more. Try not to enjoy it too much! Just remember not to take it
too seriously. After all, do we really know Luke Skywalker can operate
a futuristic X-wing fighter after quitting the dirt farmer profession?

5 out of 5 stars This is an action movie a woman can enjoy too.......2007-06-26

Im not one for 80s or early 90s action movies but i did really enjoy this one. Most action movies that have a woman being rescued etc. in it seem pretty cheesy cause the woman usually acts really fake. I admire Tia Carrere and I think she was pretty strong in this film. Who can forget her and dolph getting it on to? Not to be perverted or anything but that somewhat draws a woman into a action movie. I would defintely watch this movie again...and dont worry guys its not a sappy movie or anything but i would defintely watch it on a 2nd date...might get lucky!

5 out of 5 stars "In between cooking cycles you're supposed to baste us!".......2007-01-25

Scandic ubermensch Dolph Lundgren teams up with genetically-destined martial arts master Brandon Lee to deliver a short, hilarious and action-packed performance as two policemen fighting LA's merciless (and unintentionally campy)yakuza.
As the two are initially paired we see their struggle to mesh their differing socio-historical views of Japanese culture, as Kenner (Dolph) tries to persuade Murata (Lee) of the intrinsic superiority of all things Japanese, from apparel to furniture (and women too, as proven by singer and "seppuku supporter" Miyako (Tia Carere), the inevitable love interest).
The pair confront new yakuza boss Yoshida and his clan as they plan to unleash on America drugs packaged in beer bottles so to allow Americans to enjoy both "our beer and our drugs while watching football" as Yoshida blissfully claims.
You will be entertained in seeing men breaking their own necks (and then, thanks to the magic that is cinema, appear in the subsequent scene very much alive), breasty blondes getting decapitated, bathtub fights, careless yakuza employees losing their fingers, katana swords and the unmistakable "male bonding" process that treats the viewer to dialogue that makes "Brokeback Mountain" seem like a manifest for heterosexuality in comparison. The dialogues are in fact the ace in the hole of this film: poignant, soulful and unforgettable ("Put the finger in the trash", "This time I heard you coming", the review title etc.). In the end the duo unleashes their vendetta on "oyabun" Yoshida, the man also responsible for making sashimi out of Kenner's parents when he was a child.
All in all, an interesting martial arts flick, some good fights, some original deaths and some phrases of sure interest for nostalgics of the American 80s action genre.

3 out of 5 stars expected more.......2006-10-22

Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee star as a cop duo in this action flick that attempts humor with some decent martial arts. In the end, Showdown is ok, an average movie with nothing too exciting that will make you want to watch it again anytime soon.

The coolest thing about the movie are the two stars. The late Brandon Lee (The Crow, Rapid Fire) displays a few scenes of some great martial arts skills, while Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV, Universal Soldier) is his usual physically overwhelming self, kicking butt wherever he goes. Unfortunately, these two guys have done better in some of their other films, but it is cool to see them together in one movie. Their chemistry, though, is a bit lacking, as is the cheesy humor that fails to be humurous. Maybe back in the good old day it might have been. The villain is played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Kickboxer 2, Mortal Kombat) who is just downright dirty in this film. A sick villain, to say the least, as mentioned by another review here, that disturbing scene with the beheading of the blonde. In the end, Lundgren gets a swordfight against the Hiroyuki character, but unfortunately the scene is about over before it begins, and then the credits soon roll.

Showdown has very little story or plot. Most of the movie consists of pure action scenes and then some. The 2 cops chase the bad guys, and they chase them. Back and forth it goes. Acting, of course, is below par, as is with most action movies. I emphasive the R rating on this film as well, for there is scene after scene of naked women, cursing, and some gruesome events. Some of it just becomes annoying.

If you like Brandon Lee, Dolph Lundgren, and ok martial arts action, Showdown should be worth renting. Buying may not be necessary, its not as good as I had hoped.

Based on the manga by "Oh! great" (Ito Oogure), Air Gear (2006) elevates in-line skating to a high-tech extreme sport, much the way Eureka Seven pushes snowboarding. Minami "Ikki" Isuki is a tough-talking high school student who freeloads at the home of the four Noyamano sisters. After getting the wasabi beaten out of him by a gang of Storm Riders, Ikki discovers the world of air treks: motorized in-line skates that go at extraordinary speeds. Not surprisingly, he turns out to be a natural rider, quickly picking up skills and catching a brief vision of "the Road in the Sky." But Ikki has to face rival gangs, beginners' races, and getting a job to pay for his skates before he can aspire to the mystical aspects of the sport. Although the misfit hero, athletic challenges, and other elements in the series are standard-issue shonen (boys') anime, the computer-animated racing shots, skillful cutting and winning voice performances make Air Gear a lot of fun. (Rated TV MA SL, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, profanity, nudity toilet and risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars FLYING WITH YOUR FEET.......2007-04-09

Ikki Minami prides himself on being a tough guy, being the leader of a gang on the east side of his town, but he meets his match in a showdown with the Skull Saders. The Saders do not fight fair. They are "Storm Riders" who use "Air Treks", roller blades equipped with tiny 3 kilowatt motors that let them move at extreme speeds and do superhuman feats. These engines are so powerful that the air treks almost let them fly. After taking a beating and wetting himself, Ikki decides to take revenge but first, he needs to get his hands on some air treks. Fortunately, the family he lives with, the four Noyamano sisters, are secretly a Storm Rider team known as "Sleeping Forest". Their name alone inspires fear and respect in other riders. Ikki steals one of the sister's air treks and sets out on his own to master this new extreme sport and take vengence on the Skull Saders. He also wants to meet an beautiful air trekker named Simca that he's been admiring. Unfortunately for Ikki, he's going to find out that the world of the Storm Riders is a bit more complicated than skating around and picking fights.

The thing that catches your eye when first viewing Air Gear is the great character designs by Oh Great! They are so beautiful and instantly appealing and cool that you are sucked straight in regardless of how ludicrous the storyline is. I mean, battling roller bladers with powerful engines on their skates? Get over it! Once you accept the basic premise, you're really going to enjoy yourself. The pacing and cinematography of this show is great. To me, it looks like they spent a lot of money getting Air Gear right. The soundtrack is good as well, with mixes of trance, techno, and jazz that suits the hip nature of the anime. Fantastic first volume.

4 out of 5 stars Good Start, Good Finish, Let's Hope It Stays That Way.......2007-02-10

How does a kid live with 4 girls and basically know nothing about them? How does a kid live in a neighborhood filled with the most popular new type of inline skates and not know much about them either? I guess you could say that Air Gears main character Ikki is just about the most clueless guy on earth. Air Gear is based on a world of Inline skates called the AT, which is short for Air Trecks. The AT's technology is far beyond the skates we know. It has a built in motor that allow the skater to go to up to crazy speeds, do crazy tricks, and even fly if at the right speed. All the basics you need to know about the AT's is explained right in the beginning but you still have to watch more to completely figure out the known and unknown. AT riders form groups called Storm Riders that battle each other.

Air Gear was a pleasant little Saturday afternoon watch for me and it brightened a nasty cold day. To start the music is perfect for this stylish and action packed anime and it plays a major part on controlling the mood of the series. The action is cool; you don't get to see too many high flying tricks but more grinds than anything. A lot of the story is focused more on Ikki battling Storm Riders for their logos and to basically disband the teams so there will be one less team and he can make it to the top. Though the conflicts of the series are showed right off the bat the plot still isn't completely visible until you get into volume two. So for those who think the series is just playing around at first trust me the story gets better and more complex. I think that the total outcome of this first volume is descent and I'm definitely ready to see more but there are some flaws.

One problem is the fact that not every detail about the characters is addressed. Like who the heck are the girls that Ikki lives with and who are they to him? There may have been something saying who they were but I don't remember seeing it. Doing some Searching I found out that the girls are the Noyamano sisters and are Ikki's benefactors. Either way it's still a mystery of the history between them and why they took him in. With that said Air Gear is set for a nice looking future. The characters are great fun and very funny, the animation is very colorful and sharply done, and the voice actors sound pretty good also. So get ready for volume 2 because trust me after volume one there is no going back.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe a 3.5?.......2007-02-07

I norm dont watch anime like this but I bought it and wanted to give it a try. I seemed to like it. But it wasnt really good but it wasnt bad either. Which is why I have it a 3, maybe a 3.5 I need to see more of the series beofore I say anything else. So far it seems like a good anime. Only time can tell for me though.

4 out of 5 stars First episode free.......2007-01-14

I recently found this series via some random web searches and you can watch the first episode at IGN at http://media.tv.ign.com/media/873/873849/vids_1.html . The series definitely has some great promise and I look forward to the release of the first episode. I have also been starting to read some of the Mangas and they also seem pretty good. Judging by those two things I rate this series at a 4 for now only cause I have yet to see much into the series.

The best stuff in this ridiculously conceived sequel to Brian De Palma's groundbreaking '70s classic are the occasional, too-brief flashbacks to De Palma's groundbreaking '70s classic. They occur in the mind of Sue Snell (Amy Irving, shamelessly reprising her role), the only main character left alive during Carrie's prom revenge freakout. After a brief stint in an insane asylum, Snell is now a therapist at a suburban high school and is currently counseling Rachel Lang (Emily Bergl). Rachel isn't like other girls. When Rachel gets really mad, she moves things with her mind. Rachel's been really mad lately, because her best friend jumped from a rooftop in the first 10 minutes of this movie. Even though there's absolutely no development of this relationship, don't doubt it: we know they're best friends because they have matching tattoos. Rachel's friend lost it because she was the latest victim in a fun game that members of the football team play off the field in which they keep a running count of how many girls they can seduce, using a rating scale based on appearance. Of course, there's a nice one, Jesse (Jason London), who feels guilty about playing the game and falls for Carrie, er, Rachel. Everything appears to be changing for Rachel, but Jesse's friends have other plans. Snell knows what's up, however, and it's pretty funny watching her explain it to Rachel: "I've been through this movie before" is essentially what she says, but Rachel doesn't want to hear that she's not an original character, that she's a cheap, slightly hardened and revised '90s rip-off with no autonomy. It makes Rachel want to move things with her mind. --Dave McCoy

2 out of 5 stars Where are your dirty pillows?.......2007-06-19

I guess the biggest surprise about this is the fact that it took so long before a sequel was made. Since Carrie came out in the 70s, it was common practice in those days to strike while the iron was hot and make a sequel as soon as possible. It didn't matter how cheesy or poor it was, as long as they kept name recognition in the audiences is what they thought brought in capital. Maybe it did in video rental later, which is the only hope this movie had to be seen. It made a statement, but it had been said before with Carrie.

Carrie and her old high school have long since been dead and burried; but, curiously enough, Sue Snell is still around (played once again by Amy Irving) in the new high school's guidance office. Here we have a new generation and new student body population. So many things change, but just as many things stay the same. It starts off shocking, when a girl jumps off the roof of the building, committing suicide. The note she left indicated a terrible story. It seems that the football team, in man's never ending virility quest, played a horrible prank on her. As a hazing incident, a member of the team wined and dined her into parting with her virginity. When he did so, he dropped her like a hot potato, added another notch onto his belt, and got a pat on the back from his fellow teammates. And, being that she (we assume) was the innocent, feels horrified, embarrassed and ashamed that she was taken advantage of, she ended it. From there, the story goes right into everything Carrie already said.

Rachel is the outcast, but she doesn't seem as helpless and nervous as her predecesor was, so we like rather than pity her. It so happens that she is the half sister of Carrie (they had the same father), and, surprise surprise, she inherrited the telekinetic powers. She too will fall prey to football team's 10,000 Virgins Or Bust plot, but it just happens to be with the one nice guy who says he loves her when it's too late. Under scenes of extreme stress she uses it. Instead of the prom, she distroys everyone at a huge party.

It did make me think, for an instant, about what things were like way back when. Were we much more innocent back when Carrie was made? If there were things like the football team's groupie mentality, I didn't know about them. I'm sure kids were having just as much sex as they are now, but were these contests going on? Maybe so. In any case, if there's nothing else on have fun with this, but don't be surprised if you find it dull and listless.

5 out of 5 stars The Joys and HORROR of the High School Experience.......2007-05-30

I wasn't expecting much from Katt Shea's 1999 "Carrie" sequel "The Rage: Carrie 2." Most sequels are but a pale caricature of the original. Take for instance "Friday the 13th Part III" or "V;" both films are worth catching for various reasons, but their goofy elements make them essentially throw-away flicks. This is not the case with "The Rage." "The Rage" is a serious high school drama that includes the sub-theme of telekinesis and ends in utter, tragic horror.

Although this is a sequel, the basic plot is the same as Stephen King's original; hence, "The Rage" could be better viewed as a late-90s REMAKE. In fact, it's not even necessary to see the original to view it.

THE PLOT: A social outcast in high school slowly becomes aware that she has telekinetic abilities. These abilities are ultimately unleashed with lethal fury when the popular kids pull a meanspirited prank on her.

WHAT WORKS: First of all, I'm glad "The Rage" doesn't have the creepy Pharisaical mother like in the original. This is one aspect that I couldn't stand about "Carrie." It (sort of) gave the impression that anyone who takes the teachings of Christianity seriously will become a warped, hideous, deathly, abusive killjoy like Carrie's mother. Actually, although there are indeed modern-day Pharisees in Christendom, nothing could be further from the truth. Authentic Christianity gives true liberty, life and joy (see, for example, John 8:31-32, John 10:10 and 1 Peter 1:8). Don't take me wrong here, I'm not preachin' too you.

Emily Bergl well plays Carrie's half-sister Rachael. She's an outcast like Carrie but she's stronger, more confident and doesn't have a dream to fit in with the popular kids. One of the film's themes is: Does love really exist? Rachael says she doesn't believe in love. Her mother's in a mental institution. She's a foster child and her foster parents clearly only have her for the extra money, not because they love her.

Any teenager or adult can readily relate to the situations, experiences or issues addressed in the film:

The common cliques: the "popular" crowd, oversexed jocks, snooty cheerleaders, rich kids and their parents, nerds, outcasts, etc.

Pre-mature sexual experience and the resulting emotional turmoil.

Suicide.

First love, true love.

Being attracted to or dating someone outside your social stratum.

Football, players, fandom and hardcore coaching antics.

Friendship, rivalry, fights.

Partying.

"The Rage" successfully brings to life all these joys and horrors of the high school experience.

One interesting aspect of the film is the character of Jesse, outstandingly played by Jason London. The story plainly shows that Jesse truly loves Rachael. What is it about Rachael that attracts him? It's certainly not that she's profoundly beautiful like his ex-girlfriend (well, sort of), although she's definitely not ugly either. Perhaps Jesse sees the superficiality and conformity of the spoiled "popular kids" clique and is naturally attracted to someone more humble, loving and genuine, like Rachael. Also observe that Jesse isn't a conformist, even though he's technically part of the popular kids clique: Because of his love for a social outcast he fearlessly stands up to the most popular (completely arrogant) jock; everyone on the team gets his head shaved except Jesse, etc.

It's interesting to note that, although Rachael is portrayed as a misfit that likes Marilyn Manson (see the poster on her bedroom wall), she's definitely not a rebellious, disrespectful teenager. Note that she never "answers back" her loveless foster 'father.' Note that she works, isn't promiscuous and isn't a party monger.

During the closing credits you'll hear the song "Crazy Little Voices" by the Egyptian band Ra. The DVD is worth owning just for this outstanding song (the song is not available on their proper albums). Ra play a unique, eccentric style of metal, sort of along the lines of System of a Down.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: I personally feel Jesse and Rachael make love too prematurely (I think on their third date). However, this can be overlooked on the grounds that it (their sexual union) is very necessary to the end-plot and that real-time has to be condensed into an hour and 45 minute film.

"The Rage" doesn't include the horrific pig's blood of the original (how could one possibly ever forget that horrifying image of Carrie?), nor does it include the death-of-a-dream angle. But I'm glad it doesn't. This is properly ANOTHER take on the same basic story. There should be differences and nuances.

FINAL ANALYSIS: As usual there are people that hate "The Rage" simply because it's a sequel/remake. I encourage you to be openminded and allow yourself to enjoy a different take on the same basic plot. (Some people see WAY, WAY too many films to the point that it almost seems like they're unable to simply enjoy a good film). Both films have their strengths. In some ways "The Rage" is BETTER than "Carrie" (in truth, I was never the biggest fan of the original).

"The Rage" was a pleasant surprise for me. It's definitely not a weak or campy sequal/remake, it's a strong late-90s update. It powerfully showcases the joys and HORRORS of the high school years. Depending on your tastes it's a 4 or 5 Star film. I officially rate it 4.5 Stars. And even if you don't like it for whatever reason(s) it would be ridiculous to rate it less than 3 Stars. It's simply too well made of a picture -- cast, acting, locations (Dallas, North Carolina), story, etc. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Calling All Carrie Lovers!.......2007-02-28

If you were fascinated with the raging conflagration of Carrie of the 1970s, then this film is for you. In fact, the raging conflagration is even more three dimensional and goring. A perfect sequel!

2 out of 5 stars it depends if you saw the original or not..........2006-05-22

if you saw the (absolutely incredible) original 'Carrie' then you know that this movie is such a piece of garbage that you should not even breathe in its general direction.

If you haven't seen the (absolutely incredible) original 'Carrie' then for you, you little moron you, is an awesome horror movie where everyone dies.

bottom line: this movie is NOTHINGNESS compared to the original carrie but AWESOME when its NOT compared to the original carrie.

Worst part:basically the same exact thing happens in both movies, with the exeption of the suicide in carrie 2. Outcasted girl with telekenisis gets tricked then kills everybody using her power, including herself, with one survivor (i think there was 1 survivor in carrie 2 but im not sure) but in the original carrie, everybody died at school, while in carrie 2 everyonne died at a party.

TELL ME IF IM WRONG. that's all i have to say. thank you for reading.

1 out of 5 stars UNEEDED!.......2006-05-11

This sequel was not needed. Just like the remake, this was a waste of time and money. It only deserves one star, because they brought back Amy Irving.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest duels in yu gi oh battle city........2006-09-03

On this dvd you will see kaiba fighting ishizu.

A battle with destiny.
Can kaiba take off ishizou even that she can predict the future?
You will also find the true story of marik and the reason why he wanted te revenge the pharaoh.
The best duel of this dvd is evil marik vs evil bakura and marik.
Bakura takes the egyptian god card from evil marik, but the question is if bakura can control the true power of the winged dragon of ra and what about if ra has got more than one special abilities.
You will find out if you buy this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars WE LOVE MERIK!!!!.......2005-12-08

Once again, I'm just writing pointless reviews.
However, in the peak of the Yu-Gi-Oh saga, these were the best.
I never really watched these in interest of the duels, however, the backstories and events happening elsewhere, was what made these stories so great.
Merik is by far the best character of the entire lot, and his flashback sequence was heartwrenching. He was soooooo cute!! I feel really bad for him, yet I still love him all the more.He is definitely the best villain ever!!!!
In tribute, I have named and based a character after him in the book I've been writing for several years now.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of favoritism. .......2005-10-22

I am a HUGE fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, as you see. I don't like the dub, but...

My two favorite characters of the show are on the cover, so this is the only dubbed DVD I bought. As most people complain, the dub likes to mix and change things, as well as added melodrama. I prefer to watch it on mute, but even with the subs, it's obvious how hacked it is.

The final episode of this set is the best looking onewith all the cast drawn with nice heads, accurate facial expressions, and overall animation. The first, looking the worst, has rather blocky faces and unnatural movement(though Obelisk's summoning was pretty). The animation consistency is tragic(which is one point for the manga).

Still, this was a duel between the crazy characters, thus making it more entertaining than most of the duels. This is somewhat of a turning point in the Battle City Saga, as there is a bit of turmoil on the villain's side. I wouldn't watch YGO if it weren't for Marik(both of them) and Bakura(and you wouldn't understand unless you were a YGO junkie like me). And in another one of the "Marik's Past" episodes, you can't deny how adorable little Marik is.

I could stand the inconsistent animation, and maybe some of the violent parts edited(although I wish it wouldn't be so choppy), but the biggest downer is Marik's story being changed for no good reason. His likeability was lower in the dub, and so dub viewers might not have as much sympathy for him as one who's watched the original.

Still can't rate it lower than a B.
(shame about the shirt part.)

4 out of 5 stars A Sweet, Somewhat Sad Story of Bored Youth.......2007-06-12

You have four kids, each with a backstory (some more developed than the others) showing how their lives have each been more or less dominated by a single idea, only to have that blocked. So they do the only sane thing, and repeatedly attack a gas station. Finding their loot missing on their second try, they decide to operate the station themselves, keeping the money. Meanwhile, various people with various serious issues show up, and some are served, some driven off, some held hostage and we learn about life (not much about love, though) and (probably) something about modern Korea through the eyes of some kids who just don't quite have to the stomach to be truly bad, but at the same time, have decided to manufacture their own shocks to the system.

The leads were charismatic (well, except, oddly, the rocker), the situations funny and the few times the movie threatened to drag it always recovered nicely. A bit slight, and intentionally less-than-serious, there was a sweetness to the entire thing that might have kept it from being great, but ensured it remained entertaining.

Now... about those people locked in the trunk...

4 out of 5 stars Wacky, random asian humor.......2007-05-16

Although this might seem a tad strange, and it is, this urban Korean fantasy is a hilarious tale of rebellion at it's best. It takes boredom to the next level with a common tale about four misunderstood young people with nothing better to do than lash out at society by causing trouble. Watching the trials and tribulations of these four people makes for a highly entertaining film and the wacky humor that ensues is nothing short of insanity. Bullies, delivery boys, gangsters, this film has everything. The humor is pretty random, so it's not for everyone, but those who want a bit of nonsensical fun, should fine this film amusing. It's filled with pleasant surprises and is also surprsingly enduring with a reason for the rhyme, which helps make it more digestible. Anyone looking for a good time, check this film out, it's all kinds of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Oh How I Love This Movie!.......2007-01-04

Hilarious, sweet, touching movie about misfits and anarchy. Great acting. What's not to love? The music is so cool, I wish there was a soundtrack. Is there? And you can learn how to swear in Korean! (ah-shhhhh...)I am happy to see that this film is getting a well-deserved cult following. Watch it now!

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny Korean Film. But a Warning............2005-07-05

First let me say: This is a very FUNNY, enjoyable film!
Great plot, funny ideas and well executed in all points. A good laugh akin to those in most black comedies.(I.E. Heathers, Doubles and Big Bully)There's a little 3 stooges mixed in as is commonly found in most asian comedies, but 95% is just dark humor and fun!

Second,I must say this: Warning!
I ordered a copy of Attack the Gas Station from Amazon and much to my utter dismay, it was DUBBED in Cantonese and Mandarin with no Original KOREAN track available! Also, there was no indication of this on the back of the DVD box, so I had to open it, to find out what the audio and subtitle tracks were and thusly by opening it, made it impossible to return to Amazon. So be careful when you buy this movie. Make sure you know what you are getting. At least the print is Widescreen, so one out of two ain't bad. But I just can't see watching this great Korean Film DUBBED! To truly get the LAUGHS, you have to watch it in the original language!

4 out of 5 stars Another great DVD from Tokyo Shock.......2005-03-07

I first came across Tokyo Shock DVD's after reading about Ichi the Killer some time back. I randomly found Attack the Gas Station at a local store and decided to give it a try because of the distributor. Although the back of the box description is a little bit off, the movie was great. It is basically about 4 punks who are bored and decide to rob a gas station. When the owner informs them that he the money is at his house, they decide to hold him and the stations 3 employees hostage untill they can get the money.

Over the next 80 minutes we get to see lots of fighting, lots of eating, a bunch of cultural differences between America and Korea, and a great musical number. I am not sure what the original intent was with the movie, but it is very funny and entertaining throughout. The English dubbing on the DVD (it is optional, the original Korean language track is on there too) is pretty good at least compared to the subtitles. The features leave a little to be desired, but the character profiles are great, and the trailers pretty much guarantee that Tokyo Shock is going to be getting some more of my money in the near future.

*by the way, I am not affiliated with Tokyo Shock as it might seem since I dropped the name a few times above. I am just a fan of everything I have seen from them, and hope to turn a few folks on to them.
