5 out of 5 stars also a dream come true.......2007-04-22

PBS: Great Performances > Dance In America > Choreography by Balanchine >:
Parts 3 and 4 of 4 (1977)

I saw some of this series on TV back in 1978. I was awe-striken. I was a twenty-year fan of Stravinsky's music already and impressed by the composer's high opinion of this dance master (Mr. B). Seeing it for myself (being unable to go to NYC and actually attend) was totally thrilling and indelibly memorable.

After getting the first DVD and playing it to death, I hungered for more and bought this one. I'm sure glad I did.

Chaconne, with music by Gluck, is ravishingly beautiful stuff. The costuming is all white, so the series producer talked Mr. B into a scenario and decor, with clouds, mountains and (?) other stuff. I saw ballet to this music in the opera Orpheus and Eurydice many decades ago. I recall the male dancers wore greco-roman soldier costumes. This version was a specialty made by Mr. B when he and his American Ballet Company were employed by the Metropolitan Opera. Apparently the opera management didn't see any need for more than a perfunctory dance number in the opera. Mr. B thought he had full license to extend the role of dancing in opera. That partnership did not survive.

Prodigal Son, with music by Prokofiev, is the real reason I ordered this DVD. This work is a landmark, both unusual for Balanchine and for Diaghilev too. This was the last work created for the old impressario (and his Ballet Russe) while he lived. I suppose it counter-balances the plotless dances on the first DVD. The biblical parable is reduced in complexity, with the son's degradation reduced to bad associates plus a seductress. The end of the ballet I had seen already on TV: the son crawls to his father, literally climbs into his father's arms and gets wrapped in his father's robe. The son is played by Michail Baryshnikov.

I have noted my favorites. The other dances on this DVD are swell. I especially like the two Tschaikowsky works.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!...ONE OF THE MISSING BALLET JEWELS ON DVD.......2004-06-16

A MUST HAVE for ballet dancers, dance teachers and coreographers. This dvd bring us back the presition in movements and beatifull lines of Mr. genius Balanchine's creations. kind of old videorecordings...but still the magic on it. there are some works missing on this dvd and the other one (tzigane/jewels...etc) like serenade, star and stripes...etc...we hope in the future comes out more balanchines dvds with all the great coreographies and great music that he always used.

As this Sundance documentary series makes clear, you've never met anyone quite like Jay Bakker. Son of Jim and Tammy Faye, Jay became an evangelist, but the similarities stop there. Despite a vague resemblance to his father, the heavily-tattooed former drug addict takes an alternative approach to Christianity. He and his Revolution parishioners meet in a bar rather than a church, and their head office is located in an auto-body repair shop. Directed by Jeremy Simmons (TransGeneration) and produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), One Punk Under God is sympathetic to its subject, but it's no propaganda piece. Jay's wife, Amanda, supports her husband, but admits she'd rather see him do something else. Jay also receives funding from a conservative foundation, even though his own politics are liberal. Then again, his business partner is a Republican. Clearly, Jay Bakker is a man of contradictions.

Aside from his ministry, which takes a hit when Jay announces his support for gay marriage, this six-part program explores his personal life. During the series, he reconnects with his father, spends time with his mother (Tammy Faye was battling stage-four cancer during filming), and moves from Atlanta to Brooklyn. (Like his parents, Jay has also written a book, Son of a Preacher Man: My Search for Grace in the Shadows.) One Punk under God is sure to make provocative viewing for Christians and non-Christians alike. Extras include 16 minutes of deleted scenes and a Bakker family photo album. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Description

Enter the riotous and righteous world of punk rock evangelist and preacher's son Jay Bakker--where church is a smoke-filled bar, and tattoos and piercings an expression of faith. This original six-part series from Sundance Channel is the roller coaster story of the son of infamous televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, whose Christian empire collapsed amid scandal. ONE PUNK UNDER GOD plunges into Jay Bakker's candid and unorthodox ministry, and his bittersweet relationships with his cancer-afflicted mother and estranged father. Jay honestly, and sometimes painfully, explores a more tolerant Christianity where malcontents and misfits can worship in their own way. With a wife who wants him out of the ministry, conservative backers who are uncomfortable with his evolving stance on homosexuality, and personal demons to battle, Jay's journey is a modern day parable of forgiveness and virtue.

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell's Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one. The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger's attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened. ++++ DVD FEATURES: This officially licensed release from South Korea is All-Region NTSC Code 0 (playable worldwide) with Full Screen display and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound in ENGLISH with optional (removeable) English or Korean subtitles. 5 out of 5 stars Stones shine amid the horror.......2005-12-01

Watching this after a screening of WOODSTOCK is a real study in contrast. ALTAMOUNT was always on my radar, growing up, and I had seen this in the theater back in the 70s, but revisiting it now ... what a revelation. There was a perception that WOODSTOCK had been an incredibly significant event in the counter-culture galaxy; a peace+love tribal congress. This concert came four months later, and because it was the west coast rebuttal to the upstate NY megafest, would be even better - better bands, better drugs, hipper hippies, freakier clothes, groovier vibes. The crowd shots are both revealing, and inevitably, terrifying as the claustraphobic crush tightens around the stage (crowd control plans, anyone?) and the HELLS ANGELS react like bears in cages being poked with sticks ... they erupt in an orgy of beatdowns and over-the-top violence. After all, that's what they do. Was anyone truly surprised? The various bands (Airplane, Santana, Dead, Stones) are merely ineffectual witnesses (with a good view) to what goes on, tho Marty Balin does get coldcocked during the Airplane set. I'm sure the musicians to this day feel fortunate that they did not get stomped on stage by the ever-growing legion of wild-eyed, wooly strangers standing nearby. (keep an eye out for the 300 lb. naked man careening through the crowd) If Woodstock gave us a pleasant marijuana buzz, Altamount grinds our collective molars with a bad blend of street meth and bootleg LSD. Man, am I glad I wasn't there.
All this being said, a good portion of this excellent documentary features the Stones backstage, in the recording studio, on the road, and performing with aplomb at a Madison Square Garden show. In '69, after all, they were in midseason form.

3 out of 5 stars Best movie for real Wing Chun fighting.......2006-10-14

"Prodigal Son" has the absolute best authentic Wing Chun fight scenes I have ever seen in a movie. The movie starts off kinda slow and the Cantonese Opera scenes will probably turn off many viewers, however, if you can get past the first half of the movie it gets much better. Basically, when Sammo Hung appears in the movie and the training starts - that's when it gets worth watching. Overall, I would say the movie has some good fight scenes and some decent comedy, but Kung Fu students, particularly Wing Chun practitioners, will probably enjoy this movie more than others.

    4 out of 5 stars i apologize for giving this 1 star.......2006-10-03

The first time i watched this flick i thought it was sorry and gave it 1 star but after seeing all the good reviews i decided to check it again and it looked like a different movie. The fight scenes are awesome. I wish they had a lasted a little longer. This is a great movie and a collectors item maybe a little overrated but still worth buying. I guess i didn't really watch it the first time

5 out of 5 stars THE BASICS OF WING CHUN KUNG FU.......2006-08-07

back in the early 1980's high speed action was 1st introduced and the one who took advantage of it was sammo hung who directed this epic masterpiece and yuen woo ping and others converted over as well. this movie shows the speed, rhythm, power and grace of wing chun kung with absolutely NO WIRE AND ROPE STUNTS. its stars yuen biao, sammo hung, lam ching ying, peter chan lung, frankie chan, lee hoi sang, wei pai, and james tien along with dick wei and chung fat. now lam ching ying steals the show and yuen biao anf frankie chan performed exceptionally well, but yuen biao did a poor job of faking his kung fu because its obvious he's a master at his craft haha. fox releases of hong kong action films are the best up to date. digitally remastered sound and picture with cantonese and english audio and subtitles. so pick this up it is like i said a definite epic masterpiece.

I enjoyed this one,,,however, I think this flick is grossly over rated!!After really all the great reviews and seeing all the 4 and 5 stars, I was sufficiently convinced it has to be a gem,,,I duly dissagree with that synopsis!! However, it's an acceptable old school kung fu performance,,,the dvd transfer amazing! However, it was Sammo Hung who sold this one for me!!

          5 out of 5 stars Exellent Movie.......2006-07-11

This has to be the best Wing Chun movie around. I really enjoyed it. Note: Not for the faint of heart !

3 out of 5 stars Old "Skool" Kung Fu!!.......2006-06-10

My second flick with Yuen Biao, ( Knockabout) and he's o.k!!
