Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. The tapes give a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Investment.......2007-06-27

I love, love the Beatles, and this DVD set is awesome. I bought it as a gift for my sister, but I watch it too.

5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!.......2007-05-22

People, please. What could be more entertaining than hours upon hours of the Beatles telling their story? I have watched this many times, and never tire of it. If you are a fan, you are missing out if you don't see this. And the bonus material is great too - Paul George and Ringo jamming and reminscing - wow!

4 out of 5 stars A great bargain.......2007-05-16

This Beatles Anthology DVD set is a great bargain because when it originally came out in the mid 90's on VHS tapes it was about $120 more. I still have a catalog from then to prove it. I was very impressed with the sound quality. The best sound quality I've ever heard Beatles music presented in. Makes me wish my old Beatles CDs sounded that good. On alot of my other DVD's I have to crank the volume way up to get any decent audio. The only thing I didn't like is that during some of the songs like "Revolution" & "Hey Jude" there is talking. I'm interested in what they have to say but not during the songs. And it doesn't seem to have a feature where you can just play the music videos. But I guess it's supposed to be a documentary & not a collection of music videos. Also I seem to recall some minor scenes when I saw it on TV in 1995 that weren't on the DVD, like the reunited Beatles in the 90's admiring one of the member's fancy car.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles Anthology.......2007-05-16

This was a great price for a great product. I have really enjoyed watching all the episodes and learning more about the Beatles. The interviews with each of the members help give a personal perspective to the events surrounding the Beatles' amazing popularity. A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Any Beatles Fan.......2007-04-23

Anthology is the history of the Beatles as told by the Beatles. It is the story of the Beatles from when they were young boys in Liverpool to when they recorded their last album, and everything in between. It is not only told through their words and interviews, but by their music, their movies and live performances, including their first concert at Shea Stadium and their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, just to name a few. Anthology also comes with a bonus disc of extras which includes the making of Anthology and the recording of the two latest Beatles singles, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". Anthology is 10 hours of pure joy for anyone who likes the Beatles. Just sit back, watch, listen and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars a forgotten star shines again!.......2007-06-26

Although Tyrone Power is probably a forgotten star to many, this collection of some of his most exciting adventure films reminds those who remember him, or those who are at least familiar with some of his work, what star power once meant during the "Golden Age of Hollywood". Each of the films are my personal favorites, and the DVDs in the collection contain some interesting extras such as interviews with Power's surviving family members and former co-stars, as well as audio commentaries film historians, film composers, and other film professionals. Each DVD also contains separate audio track of each film's original soundtrack. The "Blood and Sand" DVD transfer uses a recently restored print that brings to life the film's original "old fashioned" bold and vivid Technicolor. All in all, this collection is definitely worth owning whether you're a fan or just interested in a star whose name rarely heard anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Tyrone Power the movie star shines here. For Tyrone Power the actor, see Nightmare Alley.......2007-06-13

Tyrone Power was too earnest and straight forward to be a great actor, but he had what it takes to be a great movie star. The earnestness of his acting made him likable, even in those rare occasions when he played a heel. He was startlingly handsome as a young man. Even as his looks matured after WWII, he maintained his status as a romantic leading man up to his death of a heart attack when he was 49. As a heel, a hero or as a period swashbuckler, Power had that undefinable quality that made people want to buy tickets to his movies. These five swashbucklers, as variable in quality and corniness as they are, give a fine picture of Tyrone Power, movie star. He had to fight to be taken seriously as an actor, so I hope everyone who buys this set will also take a look at Power in Nightmare Alley (1947). The characters he plays in this set -- Juan Gallardo, Benjamin Blake, Pedro de Vargas, Andrea Orsini, Walter of Gurnie -- you'll probably forget. You'll remember Power as Stanton Carlisle.

Blood and Sand (1941) -- Blood and Sand is not a swashbuckler, but an allegory of a man's pride, lust and ambition, played out in the bullring, about a man who is redeemed by the love of a good woman and a death ennobled by regret. In other words, the movie is a Hollywood weeper. Still, it shows what can be accomplished when professionals take hold of a teary melodrama and give it color, sleekness, sex and, at 27, an extraordinarily handsome leading man in Tyrone Power. Rita Hayworth, as the femme fatale, is almost as pretty.

Son of Fury (1942) -- If Son of Fury were the title of a paperback novel, we'd expect a bodice-ripping, heavy-breathing Regency romance. What we have is a highly professional Darryl F. Zanuck adventure of surprising innocence and charm. Everything about the movie, from the actors to the script to the cinematography, features such a high level of craftsmanship that the few corny moments pass quickly. The story, even with a stolen inheritance, a wicked uncle and a South Seas cutie, is told with such professional attention to naivety that we cheer for Ben, hiss his uncle, and even find the unlikely conclusion satisfying.

Captain from Castile (1947) - If Captain from Castile is remembered much today it probably is because of one of the most rousing marches a Hollywood composer ever wrote. The "Conquest" theme is heard only three times, and the first two are brief but effective scene setters. We have to wait until the movie is almost over and Hernan Cortez is setting out on his march to the Aztec capital of Tenochititlan for the full treatment. The music, by Alfred Newman, embraces the moment, with hundreds of soldiers, the priests, the natives, the hangers-on spreading out before us, the horizon lightening and a single volcano smoking in the distance. The theme is inspiring, martial, emotional, uplifting and memorable. It's enough to make most movie goers want to sign up and most historians queasy. After all, in less than a generation a civilization of between 2 million and 6 million people was obliterated.

Prince of Foxes (1949) -- If passionate love, convivial betrayals and loyalty one can change as quickly as one's shirt intrigues you, you'll most likely enjoy Prince of Foxes. If nothing else, you'll learn a great party trick that involves two eyeballs and two thumbs. Prince of Foxes, in my view, is one of the best of the Tyrone Power adventure films. It stands out in part because we find ourselves operating in the lusty, double-dealing world of Cesare Borgia. And while Orson Welles, who plays Borgia, can't resist slicing the ham with gusto, it must be admitted that he brings a lot of joie de vivre to villainy.

The Black Rose (1950) -- And what's a black rose? We're told it is the name given to the clove, the most precious of spices. In this case, the clove is Maryam, played by Cecile Aubry. She was a small French actress who looks no older than 14. She has a small mouth which is filled with tiny teeth and a plump tongue, and she occasionally jumps about to express enthusiasm. If Vera-Ellen and Charlie McCarthy had ever had a child, it would look a lot like Cecile Aubry. The movie, The Black Rose, is no stinker, but the one insuperable drawback is its disjointed nature. We move from Norman England 200 years after William the Conqueror, to the middle-east and then on to a Mongol army moving and battling its way toward China, then to the imperial court of China itself, and finally back to England. It seems to me to be one of Power's weakest romantic-adventure films.

Pitch Black
Owing a major debt to Alien and its cinematic spawn, Pitch Black is a guilty pleasure that surpasses expectations. As he did with The Arrival, director David Twohy revitalizes a derivative story, allowing you to forgive its flaws and submit to its visceral thrills. Under casual scrutiny, the plot's logic crumbles like a stale cookie, but it's definitely fun while it lasts.

A spaceship crashes on a desert planet scorched under three suns. The mostly doomed survivors include a resourceful captain (Radha Mitchell), a drug-addled cop (Cole Hauser), and a deadly prisoner (Vin Diesel) who quickly escapes. These clashing personalities discover that the planet is plunging into the darkness of an extended eclipse, and it's populated by hordes of ravenous, razor-fanged beasties that only come out at night. The body count rises, and Pitch Black settles into familiar sci-fi territory.

What sets the movie apart is Twohy's developing visual style, suggesting that this veteran of B-movie schlock may advance to the big leagues. Like the makers of The Blair Witch Project, Twohy understands the frightening power of suggestion; his hungry monsters are better heard than seen (although once seen, they're chillingly effective), and Pitch Black gets full value from moments of genuine panic. Best of all, Twohy's got a well-matched cast, with Mitchell (so memorable with Ally Sheedy in High Art) and Diesel (Pvt. Caparzo from Saving Private Ryan) being the standouts. The latter makes the most of his muscle-man role, and his character's development is one more reason this movie works better than it should. --Jeff Shannon

Dark Fury - The Chronicles of Riddick (Animated)
Taking a page from The Animatrix, Dark Fury is part of a new trend of bridging theatrical sequels. As an official product of a franchise, the 35-minute anime benefits from having the original actors voice the characters, including Vin Diesel as Riddick. This story opens with the new action hero and the two other survivors of Pitch Black already caught by a giant spaceship filled with dread. The sinewy leader has a unique--and creepy--jail for master villains and she has her sights set on Riddick. The film--indeed the series--is indebted to animator Peter Chung, who brings his techno style from his Aeon Flux series. His smooth animation for Riddick doesn't reinvent the character as much as give him a new, appealing fluidity. As anime goes, there's nothing really new here--plenty of action, cool killers, and dramatic spurts of blood--but it's a building block for how this genre might enliven movie series and sequels in the future. --Doug Thomas

Description

Journey to a remote, hostile planet with a group of marooned passengers who learn that escaped convict Riddick isn't the only thing they have to fear in Pitch Black. Then, see him battle ruthless soldiers of fortune and vicious creatures in renowned animator Peter Chung's The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. And finally, Riddick finds himself humanity's unlikely champion in the special effects-fueled The Chronicles of Riddick. Join Riddick in three times the action, three times the adrenaline and three times the adventure as the Riddick Trilogy makes complete one of the greatest sci-fi epics of all time!

4 out of 5 stars Now we need a pre- and post-Riddick trilogy..........2007-06-05

This big winners in this series were Crematoria, Elementals, the Under-verse, Necros, and Riddick as a surviving Furyan. Anything that helped in understanding these five essential elements of the Riddick Trilogy were greatly appreciated. The rest was just...entertaining.

I watched and read The Chronicles of Riddick (III) before watching Pitch Black, although I had read the book Pitch Black. The Chronicles was a better film than Pitch Black, but I know Pitch Black helped make sense of some of The Chronicles. There were a number of ah-ha moments... Riddick's relationship with the Imam and "Jack", why he is on the run, "Jack's" statements that were repeats of what she learned and heard in Pitch Black, and more.

Dark Fury is an animated short that really does a number of neat, but non-essential things: introduces Toombs the merc, demonstrates Riddick's fighting abilities, and explains the tightness of him, Imam, and Jack.

The Chronicles of Riddick (III) was great. As I mentioned, the concept of and cinematography "on" Crematoria was worth the price of the movie.

There's what is missing. We really need to know more about the pre-Pitch Black portion of Riddick's life. What was Furya really like... a futurist Sparta? And then, given that Riddick got to "keep what he kills," what does he do with the Necros when he becomes Lord Marshall? What happens to their search for the Under-verse?

Oh, right... this is fiction, science-fiction. But I still want to know what happens next!

4 out of 5 stars Riddick's dark furia?.......2007-02-16

Violent but good entertainment for those who are able to discern reality from fiction, usage of an dramatic license, realty, and hype. Those unable to, will be disturbed and should be allowed to view under Compentent, mature supervision.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this set of movies.......2007-01-16

These movies are so cool. I rented the Chronicles of Riddick from Hastings and loved it so much I had to buy it. Having the whole series in this easy package makes the last movie so much more interesting. The first movie introduces the character of Riddick and explains the connection he and Jack (the girl whose life he saves) have. Plus, for those of us who enjoy mixing diffrent genres the first movie is action horror where the third and final movie is more action drama. The second movie helps provide an explanatory bridge between the two. Also, it is a great way to see the developement of Jack and Riddick's trust relationship. However I still wish that the producers had been able to use the actors instead of animated characters in The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. All around a really good set of movies. Buy it if you like great action, a love story, evil monsters, and good (or should I say better) guys against the evil ones.

5 out of 5 stars You Keep What You Kill!.......2006-10-29

Buy this CD for "Pitch Black" and (especially) "The Chronicles of Riddick". "Dark Fury" is an animation piece which I won't comment on.

"Pitch Black" uses the standard SF plot of crash-survivors battling for their lives against hostile alien life forms. Vin Diesel, as a convict and murderer, adds another dimension to the story though. The production also adds some fresh twists and great effects. This is VERY good stuff despite the familiar theme.

The gem in this collection is "The Chronicles of Riddick". This is imaginative 'space opera' at its finest. The production is lavish with detailed and overwhelming sets of mysterious deities. The dark plot is driven by otherworldly religious fanaticism, ugly politics, human greed and Riddicks revenge. There's lots of action here but thought provoking grist as well. The movie stands out as some of the very best SF ever made.

Both movies are the Directors Cuts and are burned on a separate disk. Each movie has Special Features/Bonus Material, including director's and actors' comments. Don't pass this DVD up. It's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Totally surrounded by Riddick!.......2006-09-24

Great box set and I'm really happy that it "Includes ALL 3 MOVIES from the RIDDICK TRILOGY!" Boy, it would have been scary if there were only two movies from the trilogy...

Amid a cast of all-stars in 1953's The Robe, Victor Mature made the strongest impression as the Greek slave, Demetrius. It was only natural, then, that Mature should star in this 1954 sequel, in which the newly liberated Demetrius forges an alliance with his Christian brethren to hide the sacred robe of Christ, coveted for its "magic" by the vile emperor Caligula (Jay Robinson, also reprising his role in The Robe). Captured and manipulated into believing his beloved Lucia (Debra Paget) has been killed, Demetrius rejects his pacifist faith, plots vengeance while becoming a rising star in the bloody arena, and falls prey to the scheming senator's wife Messalina (Susan Hayward), who craves his... affection. It all leads to a crisis of faith that will determine Demetrius's fate as a noble Christian or downfallen hedonist.

Inheriting The Robe's CinemaScope production values, Demetrius and the Gladiators has everything you'd want in a Biblical epic, riding the wave that would crest two years later with Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments. It's campy, of course--Robinson is outrageously over-the-top; Mature is too contemporary (preceding the absurdity of Richard Gere's King David by 30 years); and Hayward seems closer to Rodeo Drive than ancient Rome. Still, there are abundant pleasures here, from the lavish arena battles (a bit cheesy, but still impressive) to a straightforward morality tale that doesn't compromise its themes of religious loyalty. You don't watch movies like this for historical accuracy, but for the combination of thrills, passion, and glory that were Hollywood trademarks of 1950s epics, long before the more secular ambition of Gladiator. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

This enormously successful sequel to "The Robe" continues the story of Demetrius (Victor Mature), the Greek slave who, after the death of his master, is sentenced to train as a gladiator in the Roman arena. There, his newfound Christian faith is put to the test when he has to contend not only with the swordsmen and wild beasts of the arena, but also the evil and sensuous Messalina (Susan Hayward) and the mad emperor Caligula (Jay Robinson). Crammed with astonishing action and fight sequences, this heroic epic is not to be missed.

1 out of 5 stars don't buy it.......2007-05-13

This is a terrible movie - it would be bad enough if we hadn't read the book, The Robe, but because we did, the book portrays Demetrius as a thoroughy moral, loyal and admirable person, and the movie shows him as a pleasure-loving, vacant-eyed, immoral fighting machine. Where the movie makers came up with this spin is beyand me, but someone should have stopped them. Actually, after reading the book and 'knowing' Demetrius in that manner, I found the movie nauseating - like a crude and mean characture of a good friend.
Don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Bibically-Based Films.......2007-04-10

This is one of the very best Bibically-based films ever, and it was also one of the best of the early "sequels." Taking up the story precisely where The Robe left off, it is an even more exciting continuing tale of the Greek slave, Demetrius, and his quest to protect the robe worn by Jesus at His crucifixion. The gladitorial combat scene, where Demetrius avenges the assumed death of his sweetheart, and subsequently renounces his faith, is one of the most memorable ever, and actually rivals that of Russell Crowe in "Gladiator." A must for the Easter season, or for any time one needs a reaffirmation of faith or inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars A film that surmounted the acidic test of time!.......2007-04-10

Demetrius and the gladiators is 'possibly one of the finest and exciting about the biblical epic. The movie in question depicts the last days of Caligula around the untiring search of the Holy cloak; the capture of Demetrius and his forced incursion into the gladiator' s epic, his sudden loss of faith when he fervently is seduced by Mesalina and finally the death and rise of Claudius.

There are brilliant and realistic sequences of brave fights on the Imperial sand but the film abruptly ends; and one leaves the hall firmly believing if it was question related with the budget.

Fortunately the precious Susan Hayward gives a tour de force acting who makes us to forget on one hand the awful performance of Caligula (absolutely flat and pasteboard) the straight stone faced of Victor Mature whose inexpressiveness was pitifully its main enemy to achieve a major status in Hollywood.

But there are justified moments of emotion all the way through, for kids and adults.

4 out of 5 stars An exciting epic sequel, fashioned according to the manner of Hollywood in the '50s.......2007-03-12

Demetrius and the Gladiators is a very good movie, in the classic sense of that term.

Many people of his time adored Victor Mature, while critics sometimes claimed he was melodramatic, but Mature was impressively right for the majority of films in which he was cast. The studio system was smart that way.

In this case, Mature brings the drama to life almost single-handedly, and certainly carries off this cast-of-thousands sequel to THE ROBE beautifully. Mature was well suited to the 50s sword-and-sandal trend, and I'd say this film, along with DeMille's equally good SAMSON AND DELILAH, are among his best performances of the period.

This film is a respectable and interesting sequel to THE ROBE, and unequivocally worth seeing. What's more, I can't agree that Jay Robinson is "over the top" -- he's just as fascinating a villain as he was in THE ROBE, and we're lucky to have more of him in the role in this movie. Considering that Robinson became, by all accounts, mentally obsessed with his character of the Roman emperor in these two films for the rest of his life, I'd say this movie is even more fascinating in that regard. Robinson is one of those actors who proves the old saying that it only takes one stand-out performance to secure an actor's place in history forever. Robinson's performance is easily the best Roman emperor ever committed to celluloid up until now, I CLAUDIUS notwithstanding.

In short, don't sell this movie short, or you'll be the worse for it. The movie's tone is certainly different from THE ROBE, but it is a genuinely satisfying Hollywood entertainment of a fairly high order. The budget is generous, the cast is excellent, and the movie looks very good in all the most important aspects as a result. Feel free to bring popcorn, and I'd recommend a Kleenex as well.

4 out of 5 stars Robe Sequel drawn from "The Big Fisherman" Lloyd C. Douglas Novel.......2007-02-15

In an age when Hollywood was not fond of making sequels (1954), we have here a continuance of the story of the Robe of Christ and the Christians who were dedicated to it's preservation after Tribune Gallio (Richard Burton) is martyred at the end of 1953's "The Robe", an extremely popular Christian epic. The plot follows Demetrius (Victor Mature) as he experiences what Christians call "backsliding", due to a perception that his love is dead at the hands of some drunken gladiators. What follows is a tremendous example of revenge and eventual redemption of a man overwhelmed with grief and filled with hate. The Gladiator scenes are wonderfully done. The colors and production in Cinemascope stand out and some of the continuing performances such as Jay Robinson are worthy of an Academy Award nomination, as Robinson gives his heart to the role of the manic Caligula, believing himself to be a God and eventually being killed at the hands of his own guards. The revenge scene against the Gladiators is Great! Demetrius grabs a sword and kills them one by one in the arena as his opponents are forced to face him under the whip of Ernest Borgnine and the hot-smoking poker of Demetrius's friend. "These aren't the rules" says a gladiator full of fear at Demetrius's blood lust for their deaths. "We're changing the rules!!! replies Borgnine as he chases the rest of them out to die. WOW! One of the better Gladiator movies since Spartacus and although Crowe's Gladiator is excellent and funny in spots, this movie from the 50's is a classic rendering with bad guys you love to hate! Well recommended, but make sure you see "The Robe" first to know what is going on.

"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" sneers Johnny Rotten at the Sex Pistols' farewell performance. After seeing this picture you'll understand his disgust, but Julian Temple's sharp portrait of the ragged, raw band of working-class Brits won't leave you disappointed. The Sex Pistols left their legacy in a whirlwind 26-month reign, spitting out a caustic, confrontational brand of rock & roll that became the rallying cry for angry, disaffected youths in late 1970s England and defined the punk movement. Their story was first told two decades ago in the cynical The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, also directed by Temple but produced by the Sex Pistols' smarmy manager, Malcolm McLaren, who stage-managed the film into a self-promoting vanity project. For The Filth and the Fury, Temple turns to the four surviving band members to tell their own stories. His vibrant, vigorous direction captures the period of social unrest and alienated youth without turning into a history lesson, and shows the Pistols in all their insolent glory: spewing obscenities and gesturing lewdly to audiences and press alike, screaming out lyrics, overcoming musical limitations with pure passion and attitude. Rare, raw concert footage (including their final performance, which is appropriately enough the song "No Fun") and previously unseen interviews with the deceased Sid Vicious further energize the portrait. There's even footage of the smiling band cutting cake for kids at a fundraiser with nary a nasty gesture or sneering comment. Now there's a side of the Pistols you don't see everyday. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The REAL Story.......2007-03-14

Forget Julien Temple's "The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle," his previous Pistols film. That was almost purely fiction, created solely as an ego-stroke for Malcolm McLaren. This is the real story, told by the members themselves, using archival footage and new interviews. More than simply presenting the what's and where's, it also delves into the question of WHY punk rock became the phenomenom it did in mid-Seventies Britain. This is an absolute must-see film for anyone interested in the history of rock music. From the live footage of the Pistols wreaking havoc onstage, to the the genuine emotion displyed by John Lydon when discussing the heroin addiction and death of friend and bandmate Sid Vicious, this movie is simply incredible. I've watched it at home dozens of times and it never gets old. Very highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The Filth And The Fury.......2007-03-09

This is a great story of strange time for a band that changed a lot of things in rock&roll. This is the story in their own words with some great footage before everyone had video cameras and the internet. If you liked the Pistols and want a raw story and the history of the band, this is THE one to have.

4 out of 5 stars The Punk Is Dead.......2006-09-10

I rate this movie 8/10 or 4 stars. This movie is among the 1000 Best Movies on DVD by Peter Travers. It won 3 awards in 2000 as best documentary in Chicago, Sao Paolo, and the Online Film Critics Society Awards.
The movie depicts the history of one of the most controversial Rock bands ever: The Sex Pistols. This DVD is a widescreen version of the film and features an audio commentary by director Julien Temple. The story of the band is told chronologically, and we get to see some of the members of the band telling us their own point of view of their contribution to the band and what happened during the 26 months the band lasted. There is a lot of controversy about the figure of Sid Vicious, who was found dead (by overdose or suicide, or was it just the same?) after being charged for the murder of his partner Nancy. One of the things I like the most about the movie is the Extra Documentary "Un-Defining Punk: An In Depth Examination of the Punk Movement", a 35 minute long documentary that gives us a very good deep analysis of what punk was.
I recommend this movie to anybody who likes pop culture, the history of Rock, and more especifically, to punk fans and anybody who likes transgression in Art in any form. The movie is rated R, which is a pity because it can't be shown to teenagers who would benefit a lot from watching it.
P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them

5 out of 5 stars God Save The Queen, Here's the Sex Pistols.......2006-07-19

The Filth and The Fury is a must have for any true Rock'n' Roll fan! The film charts the meteoric rise and fall of the Sex Pistols. You get the story straight from the band who, tell the truth and pull no punches. The film includes many rare performance clips and interviews. Although the band only lasted a mere 26 months, the film proves that the Pistols' music is just as relevant today as it was in 1977 (maybe more so!). If you're a Pistols fan, buy this DVD! If you're not a fan, buy this DVD (you'll become one!!).

5 out of 5 stars NO FUTURE FOR YOU!.......2006-06-24

Yes, I agree with all the others before me, a real documentary!! Finally something to watch other then the crap put out by McClaren.I loved this because it had the actually means of telling you what happened. With real interviews, even with Sid Vicious himself! Why should anyone have to buy anyother "documentary" when you have John Lydon himself telling you what happened? You have the actually televised interviews that made the pistols their "filthy"-selves. This tells the story from begining to end, with no bull. I see this as not only an important part of my Sex Pistols collection, but as a masterpiece. Because it tells the story from the mouth of the creators. Not the snakes. Great for all Pistols Fans and even those who want the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Good Enough.......2007-04-03

This set is good enough. I mean, how can an old production be made to today's standards without altering the original content. Come on. This and Enter the Dragon is all I need to start with for my collection. Bruce is a legend, and to have a set like this is good enough in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Good collection, but average........2007-03-27

Right off the bat, this collection loses a star for it's inclusion of Game of Death and Game of Death II. Both are insulting to the Bruce Lee legacy. While Game of Death II is just a REALLY BAD movie, the first Game of Death would have actually been a decent film had they not tried to capitalize on Bruce Lee. Instead, we see a bunch of cheap Bruce Lee acting imitations and some bad special effects. It's just insulting.

The other three movies, worthy of being part of this collection are: The Big Boss (AKA Fists of Fury), Fist of Fury (AKA Chinese Connection), and The Way of the Dragon (AKA Return of the Dragon). I've never seen them done so well. I've seen previous DVDs of the first two movies, but these remasters look marvelous. Most of it is clean. Up close, you might be able to see some small pixelization artifacts though. It seems like they took a high resolution image from the original tapes and then squeezed the picture down to standard definition. Looking a few feet away though, you may not notice the artifacts; and the improvement in picture quality is worth it.

The sound quality is also decent. I'm not a big sound buff, but the sound sounds alright to me. Ah, but wait. The Chinese soundtracks sound good, but the English ones are a different story. Another star was lost here because the English soundtracks on all but the Game of Death movies are junk. The voices are low and the sound effects sound super low quality and way over done. It's not even worth watching the movie in English. Therefore I suggest that to get the most out of this collection, watch it with Audio Track 3: Chinese. This is the original recording in Cantonese. Then select English Subtitles. While this is a bit of a pain, it's better than watching the movie with the English audio.

This is the first time I've seen The Way of the Dragon. I must say I was disappointed. I can see that Bruce tried to get his instructional points in and his humor. But the story seemed second rate and the fight scenes needed more work. Most of them had no punch to them; they looked fake. Although, an OK movie, this is his worst. The other two and the Warner Bros. release, Enter the Dragon, are the best, especially the latter.

1 out of 5 stars What a ripoff.......2007-03-03

I do not know who wrote these reviews but after viewing this collection I was compelled to write this review. I am a fan of Bruce lee and his movies and to have someone come out with this low quality imitation of remastered videos is a disgrace to his legacy. The sounds were almost comical. The real insult is to put special features on each video and to see that there are none. I clicked on the special features on every video and there were no specials. I wish I could not give it one star but I have to in order to write this. Be very careful if you get this collection and know you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars The best Collection of Bruce Lee.......2007-02-15

I have truly enjoyed the copy of this collection.

4 out of 5 stars I don't buy imports - this is the next best thing!.......2007-01-03

What can I say. I bought imports before and got burnt.

Suffice it to say, this is possibly the next best thing to own. Here, you get to actually watch the movies in the original languages, with the exception of Game of Death and Game of Death II, but they were always done in English and is not a big loss.

Having the original Chinese language is great on many fronts. First off, the dubbing that was done before in English was horrendous as it always has been. Plus, some things are changed from the story line when they translate it as they try to match the lip movements to the English words.

Also, because of the translation, this sometimes causes other scenes to be thrown out. Case in point is in Way of the Dragon/Return of the Dragon. When Bruce's character is standing outside the restaurant with his stomach growling, a man comes out and tells him to go on inside. In the American version, we see Bruce go in and then come out again, apparently after having eaten. Well, an entire scene was missed in where he goes into the restaurant to order food and can't speak a word of English, but that's what the waitress speaks in and what the menu is in. The entire exchange is hilarious. It also drives home the point that Bruce's character is out of place in Rome which makes more sense with many of the scenes in the movie which seemed strange when spoken in the English language.

Now, it would have been nice to have more "extras" other than the filler stuff they have here, which is basically slide shows, trailers and interviews with people. I understand the import versions have much more, but for me, this coupled with the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD makes my Bruce Lee collection complete.

With the Ultimate Collection, you get a new 5.1 English soundtrack but at times, it sounds funny during the fight scenes. Specifically, it sounds like the fight is taking place in a tunnel with the reverberation turned on a little too much I guess. It can be kind of distracting and disorienting with the way it sounds, but it's not a total loss. Still, the Chinese soundtrack is better. Different music and it just flows better.

The Chinese soundtracks are fine and make the movies much more enjoyable for me because you get to hear the true emotions of the actors. Some have complained about the subtitles being within the movie rather than in the black bars below. This is because these movies are in anamorphic wide screen, so on a HDTV, you'd have no black bars. To me, it's not that bad. That's how it would have been in the theaters to begin with anyways.

The picture for each of the movies are great, with the exception of Way of the Dragon. Early on, parts of it are fuzzy and out of focus. Now, this could be due to the camera shot itself because it's not the entire shot that's out of focus, but it's not enough to be completely horrible or unwatchable. But, after you get past that point in Way of the Dragon, the picture is great just like in all the other movies.

The only unwatchable things are the Game of Death (minus the final fights with the REAL Bruce of course) and Game of Death II and we all know why that is. If you really want to see how the Game of Death fights were, get the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD which contains at least 30 minutes of the fights in the order they would have happened, including his side kicks that were supposed to come along with him but were left out of the GOD movie for obvious reasons. It's a very interesting introspective on what Bruce was trying to envision with Game of Death and it's a shame it was never completed the way he wanted it. Plus, all the interviews up to that point are great, with Chuck Norris, Kareem Abdul Jabar and so many other former students and martial artists that knew and worked with Bruce Lee.

To me, this set is worth 4 stars. It could have gotten 5 stars with some extra content and the strange 5.1 sounds hurt that as well, but overall, this is worth having. Couple this with the 2-disc DVD of Enter the Dragon and it's completely worth 5 stars.

There is no better bargain in the states than this.

Ok there are a couple of good scenes here but not worth buying - trust me I did and I regret it!The towel scene is very good and so is the lesbo scene with the warden but way to much story line!

2 out of 5 stars Beware what version of the movie you get!.......2007-05-17

Although the film istelf contained a lot of compelling tawdriness, the version of the movie from NETFLIX is edited and bland. Not much nudity, and barely any lesbian content. What was a masterpiece of sexy WIP trash has in some cases been diluted until it isn't even a blip on the Cinemax radar. Nice going, NETFLIX (you douchebags). So if you buy this film, make sure it's not a denuded (pun not intended but useful) copy.

3 out of 5 stars Gotta love babes behind bars........2006-12-30

I confess, I am a huge fan of WIP (Women in Prison) movies. Is it the sweaty stains that reveal pert nipples on their jailhouse duds? The fact that no matter how degraded or disgusting their surroundings, these gals still wear make up fit for a Cosmo shoot? Is it the repressed lesbian lusts of the guards and the warden? Or is it all these things, stirred to boil, and strained to make a fine tea of sex and violence (and naked showering)? This film does the genre proud, replete with lesbo warden, lesbo bitch rapist, running around the jungle bare foot, and sleazy straight sex. I mean, whaddya expecting here, War and Peace?

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful flick!.......2006-12-26

At first,I did not know what to expect from an imported film. The beginning starts with a lawyer arriving in Venezuela and a little kid escorts him to the doctor's house. The doctor then launches into the story of a young woman named Anglea Duvall, who is framed for murder and thrown into a womens prison for 18 years. After a while, however,Anglea discovers prison wont be as easy as she thinks. In the space of three days, she is beaten, hanged, and put through a series of painful initiations. The head matron,a kind and wonderful woman, tries to win Angela's affections, being a lesbian.Angela, however, will not talk. There, she befriends a kind woman named Denise, who promises to look after her, because she is weak. However, the head honcho,Captain Bonofascio, tries as hard as he can to make sure angela suffers at the prison. It isnt long before the women's fury is unleashed and they stage a full scale revolt, escaping the prison and into the Brazillian jungle.Along with the great lesbian scenes,at which its worth every penny,I would recommend this movie to all you women's prison film fans

2 out of 5 stars Fast forward review.......2006-06-23

So what do we have here in this women in prison flick, a "true story that happened to real people"? To start with, no decent entry scene for the pretty heroine, who is imprisoned unjustly or something, I didn't have the sound up. But after too much plot, there is a very good wet towel whip scene to introduce her to the inmates, followed by some minimal afro lez. A doctor's office scene is wasted, no exam, and he's male, so no doc lez. Much more plot, and we finally get a hosing down scene with leering guards, but only topless. More plot, and there's actually a hanging scene, somewhat rare in these things, but it's too short and fully dressed. Finally after way too much plot get we some decent warden/guard lez, a refusal, and then some threatened baton abuse that gets warm but turns into a more extensive lez out, pretty decent, R rated but full frontal. Then there's partially nude catfighting and some prisoner lez that nevers gets started, and you can turn it off right there, the rest is plot.

Well, what can you say about a WIP film that includes NO SHOWER SCENE?? Unforgivable. Franco got away with that once, but then his WIP movie was almost totally topless, which made up for it. And no whipping either, aside from the towel. I don't know, two sleaze scene stars I suppose, one for the towel scene (can you imagine why that didn't happen in the shower room?), 1/2 for the asphyx scene, maybe a 1/2 for the nudity, but the NTRL factor is pretty low. Too bad, some of the prisoners were kinda cute.

Don't be put off with the misnomer of the title to this little known 1948 picture. "Fury At Furnace Creek" is a neat little atmospheric western with a literal screenplay by Charles Booth from a story by David Garth. Crisply directed by Bruce Humberstone it is nicely photographed in Monochrome by Harry Jackson and well played by a good cast. In the lead is Victor Mature playing a man who, with his estranged brother (Glenn Langan), sets out to clear the name of his army Colonel father (Robert Warwick) who dies suddenly during his military trial after being falsely accused of leaving the Fort at Furnace Creek undefended against marauding Apaches resulting in the massacre of its occupants.

Humberstone directs in commanding fashion and the story is fully fleshed out with an array of interesting characters the likes of leering baddie Albert Decker, the englified Reginald Gardiner and fresh from "Captain From Castile" Jay Silverheels as the Apache chief Little Dog and Roy Roberts as Decker's equelly crooked associate. Also there is an amusing turn by Charles Kemper as the town drunk who is chained and shackled to an enormous tree trunk which he must carry around on his shoulder because the town has no jail. The female lead is filled by Colleen Gray who rejoins Mature after "Kiss Of Death" the year before. The only problem I had with the film is the corny music score! I'm surprised at composer David Raksin who cheapens the movie somewhat with his awful score which is nothing more than the orchestra playing the cowboy ditty
"Don't Bury Me On The Lone Prairie".There is no dramatic underscoring whatsoever which I find doctrinaire.

Nevertheless, it's Mature's movie and as usual he gives a likable and workmanlike performance. An actor who has never had his fair dues from critics Mature was one of the most underrated actors in the business. He never won any major awards or plaudits for his work and even said of himself "I'm no actor and I have a scrapbook at home full of reviews to prove it". Yet he was more than convincing in such movies as "Kiss Of Death", "Cry Of The City", "My Darling Clementine" (as Doc Holliday) and as the Greek slave Demetrius in "The Robe" and its sequel "Demetrius & The Gladiators". And let's not forget his iconic portrayal of Samson when - at the behest of Cecil B.DeMille he was loaned to Paramount for the DeMille epic production of "Samson & Delilah". DeMille insisted that Mature was the only man in pictures that would look the part.

He turns in the same sure-footed and admirable sort of performance here in "Fury At Furnace Creek" which will not be out of place in your western collection. It is a good looking DVD too with nice sharp Black & White images.
Extras include a Poster gallery and a behind the scenes gallery and there's a good trailer somewhat marred by the excessive hard sell of the movie by none other than Gregory Peck.

Classic line from "Fury At Furnace Creek" when Mature asks Charles Kemper - who is laden down with that tree trunk on his shoulder - "do you do this often?" to which Kemper chuckles in response "no, only on Sundays".

4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent story.......2007-06-08

Not a bad western for the late 40's. Mature made this around the same time as "My Darling", which, obvioulsy is much better than this. Still Mature does well with westerns. The brother/brother conflict plays up well, but, kinda ends with a thud. That could have been tied up better. Considering the "age" of the movie, the quality was very nice. I
bought it and don't regret it, as I will watch it again. Some may prefer to just rent it.

4 out of 5 stars Good segway.......2007-05-19

This movie is supposed to be a "filler" between Pitch Black Pitch Black (Unrated) [HD DVD] and Chronicle of Riddick The Chronicles of Riddick (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut). The story isn't bad, and it continues in the Riddick tradition. I was sad it was not longer, but I was fairly happy with the story. It was interesting to see some of the behind the scenes commentary which helped paint some of the Riddick universe's picture.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Fury.......2007-04-11

This was gift for my husband who loves the whole chronicles of riddick thing. He loves it so i gave it 5 stars for that reason.I have not seen it nor do i plan to so if he loves it i love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good animation........2007-03-08

Story line was good. Covers events between "Pitch Black" and "Chronicles". However it was too short and may have been better if live action instead of animime.

5 out of 5 stars good but short.......2007-02-07

I am an anime fan and I love this movie. It is very short but I always think of it when I am watching cronicles of Riddick. I love the animation of Peter Chung it is brilliant and beautiful, not to mention the awesome fight scenes. I wish there were more of these to enjoy, 35 minutes is not enough for this amazing and inventive story.

3 out of 5 stars Liked it, yet would have wanted more from it.......2006-10-20

I can only give this short 3 stars because even though I liked it I also felt like there could have been more to it. I liked both Pitch Black and the Chronicles or Riddick and it I like the idea of filling in certain gaps. I believe there are a number of angles that could be covered in the Riddick storyline. With Dark Fury I think that it helps, only slightly, in explaining the beginning of Chronicles of Riddick sequal and one of the scenes in the sequal when Riddick and Jack are on Crematoria.

Yet, like other reviewers this was just to short for me. Just when I had gotten into it, it was over. This is critical to me since I was thinking about buying it. I am glad that I had rented it, where I watched it twice and then after that I got all I needed from it.

I think this anime would have better if it was a part of a series dealing with Riddick's past. It would be better if they made a series of Riddick animations and then sold them together. It would nice to know what happened to Riddick during his years in prison. It would be nice to know about his escape from Butcher Bay (I guess the video game deals with that). It would be nice to know what exactly are the Furyans race. It would be nice to know what happens after the Chronicles of Riddick sequal. Covering these in an animated series would have made Dark Fury more appealing. Also, I am not one for the Ion Flux style of animation. It made Riddick look smaller than in the movies. He looked real scrawny where in the movies his is bigger.

So my recommendation is to rent, not buy, unless you are really a Riddick fan and plan on making this a part of your collection.
