Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has

Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Usul Muad'Dib Atreides
something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick

Conspiracies abound in Children of Dune, Sci-Fi Channel's praiseworthy miniseries sequel to Frank Herbert's Dune, loyally adapted from the Herbert novels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune by John Harrison, who passed directorial duties (due to a scheduling conflict) to Greg Yaitanes, a 31-year-old TV director and Dune neophyte tackling his biggest assignment to date. Uninitiated viewers face a disadvantage; it's best to read Herbert's books and/or see the first miniseries before plunging into this remarkably coherent tangle of political intrigue, unfolding 12 years after the events of Dune.

To his horror, Maud'Dib--Arrakis emperor Paul Atreides (Alec Newman, reprising his Dune role)--has become the unintended figurehead of a violent dictatorship, and his enemies are multiplying. Vanishing into the desert, he waits as destiny shapes his twin heirs Leto II (James McAvoy) and Ghanima (Jessica Brooks), who must contend with their scheming aunt Alia (Daniela Amavia) while Princess Wensicia (Susan Sarandon), of the enemy House Corrino, plots her own attack on Maud'Dib's familial empire. Exiled Atreides matriarch Lady Jessica (Alice Krige, giving the film's finest performance) returns to Arrakis, where the enormous, desert-dwelling sandworms face an uncertain future. As always, the spice must flow, and the universe's most coveted commodity remains at the center of this richly detailed and physically impressive production. Special effects range from awesome (fly-over shots of the capital city, Arakeen) to awful (the saber-tooth tigers look like Jumanji rejects), and Dune devotees will endlessly debate the miniseries' strengths and weaknesses. Some may desire more action to punctuate the film's inherent verbosity, but consensus will surely conclude that this is Dune done right, with monumental effort and obvious devotion from everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-06-29

I haven't ready of the books, I won't lie to you about that.

I haven't seen much Sci-Fi beyond what's universally known (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.)

But I will still tell you this much...

This is one of the best mini-series I have ever watched. You get everyting in this, drama, suspense, action and so much more.

If you're planning on buying this to get a war miniseries, an all out action miniseries, or even a "cool and trippy" sci-fi miniseries, this may not be for you.

It's so much deeper than that and unfortunately I don't think a lot of people will be able to appreciate it. That being said, if you're in the mood for a good story, I'd recommend this one.

I would however behoove you to check out the first miniseries,Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) , before watching this one, if only to get a full appreciation and understanding of what's going on.

5 out of 5 stars Affordable and Amazing to watch!.......2007-06-07

After watching the first mini-series of dune (and loving it!), I immediately watched the second as soon as I got it. I thought it was even better then the first.
First I'm glad they fixed some minors problems, a major issue with everyone was the Fremen's neon glowing eyes. They toned it down to a more subtle believable look.
Second was the great casting. I think almost everyone did a great job. My favorite actors were the ones playing Leto II, Ghanima, Irulan, and Alia. They gave such a powerful performance and really gave their character emotions that we can respond to and feel for. Like Alia's tortured possession scene, Irulan's love for Paul, and Leto and Ghanima's journey to put the rule of the universe to order.
Third was the soundtrack. And what an unbelievable score it was! I love every moment with Brian Tyler's piece. I don't think the movie would have been half as successful without it. I listen to it from my ipod, since I love it so much. It's powerful, diverse, and fits the mood of the story and the characters. My favorite tracks are Children of Dune, House Atredies, and Ima Natusf.
All together it creates a great movie, especially one made for television surprisingly. You usually don't get quality like this on 95% of made for tv movies. So I give a lot of credit to the makers for pulling it off so well within a small budget.
I never read the books and at first with the Dune mini-series and this one, some may not understand some point of the story, but really pay attention and you shouldn't have a problem understanding. It helps to watch it a second time around.

With this price, you can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Review: Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (TV Miniseries).......2007-06-06

This sequel to the miniseries "Dune" follows the storyline of the original series of books quite well, and is an excellent addition to my video library. After viewing both miniseries, I am encouraged to re-read the texts covered by this set of videos.

5 out of 5 stars Love this mini series.......2007-06-05

Great continuation of the Dune mini series created by the sci-fi channel. They did a great job representing the book. I'm hoping the come out with God Emperor to continue the series.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not up to the books........2007-04-19

The hardest part of adapting the Dune books to a film format is that, in the interest of time, one has to decide whether to focus on the action or the politics of the story line. The Children of Dune (actually a combination of the second and third books) opts to try and strike a middle ground and actually succeeds in large part. They get extra credit from me for bringing back the actors from the Dune mini-series. The story is great, the film quality isn't bad. I thought that they played up the maddness of Paul's sister just a little too much for my taste, but Leto's character seemed spot on. Its well worth the purchase if you're a fan of the Dune books. Its amazing to see some of the places that previously existed only in my head on the screen.

It's a mixed blessing, but Frank Herbert's Dune goes a long way toward satisfying science fiction purists who scoffed at David Lynch's previous attempt to adapt Herbert's epic narrative. Ironically, director John Harrison's 288-minute TV miniseries (broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel in December 2000) offers its own share of strengths and weaknesses, which, in retrospect, emphasize the quality of Lynch's film while treating Herbert's novel with more comprehensive authority. Debate will continue as to which film is better; Lynch's extensive use of internal monologue now seems like a challenge well met, and Harrison's more conventional approach is better equipped to convey the epic scope of Herbert's interplanetary political intrigue.

This much is certain: this Dune is a sumptuous treat for the eyes, with sets and costumes that were conceived with no apparent limits of budget or creativity. In terms of architecture alone, this is one of the most impressive films in science fiction history. And although the special effects fall short of feature-film quality, writer-director Harrison (who rose from an extensive background in TV) admirably tames the sprawling narrative that pits the opposing houses of Atreides and Harkonnen in a struggle to control the lucrative market for the spice melange. This is as accurate as any Dune adaptation is likely to get (i.e., there's no need for another attempt), and even then, it can be tricky to keep track of who's doing what to whom. Unfortunately, the film's biggest flaws are the casting of a nearly comatose William Hurt as Duke Leto, and a wooden Alec Newman as the messiah-to-be, Paul Atreides. These are regrettable shortcomings, but this Dune remains altogether respectable. That Frank Herbert would be impressed is perhaps the biggest compliment one can pay. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Frank Herbert's Dune TV Miniseries.......2007-05-13

It was hours of excitement. Well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Still not the definitive Dune, but very good nevertheless..........2007-05-11

This Made-for-TV mini-series is exceptional, if compared to the Theatrical counterpart, made many years before by David Lynch.

It keeps pace is scope and grandeur with its cousin.

It has been lavishly produced and the actors, although only a few truly known, just like William Hurt, do their jobs with dignity and are very believable in their respective roles.

Some special effects were even taken over from the theatrical movie, such as the Sand Worms on Arrakis (the Dune Planet), which were made in both cases by creature designer Carlo Rambaldi. Only this time, they truly come alive and are really menacing.

Even the music, although more Earthbound, and "orientally" exotic, seems to work when compared to Toto and Brian Eno's music score of the theatrical movie.

Everything seems to come alive and even though some artistic license has been taken with Frank Herbert's novel, this is probably one of its best transliterations to date.

The transfer on DVD is very well done and presented in a matted 1.78:1 image ratio and is compatible with 16:9 TV sets. The sound is clear and polished. You can understand the dialogue clearly, even during explosions or other sound effects taking place.

Highly recommended for the entire family, although for its complexity of themes and plot structure, it would be advisable to have an adult present to explain to minors the more difficult passages.

Highly recommended.

godamn, even though it was a mini series, i believe this was one of the greatest min series/ movies ever put on film........just incredible!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Makes your realise how good david lynch is..........2007-03-29

I read all the reviews here and bought these DVDs with much anticipation, but am very dissappointed with this series. It is nowhere near as good as the movie - not even close. The casting is mediocre, compared with the outstanding cast in the movie, and the scenes are poor - especially the desert scenes that dont even seemed to have been filmed in a desert. I have read all 15 dune books and I can tell you that the film captures the essence of dune much better than this series. The Baron in particular is just way too nice in this series. Chani, also, is harsh and unattractive, and you just end up wondering what Paul is doing with her. The actress that plays Jessica tries hard, but it would be impossible to compete with Fransesca. Julie Cox (Irulan) is the standout in the series, but unfortunately her part is not large enough to carry it. I would rate this series as 'watchable' but any comparison to the David Lynch masterpiece is futile as this doesnt come close.

5 out of 5 stars good adaptation .......2007-03-14

I love the books, and I believe that this series is very well done and has a very good resemblance with the original story

5 out of 5 stars Dune: epic classic, timeless, powerful..........2007-06-20

For all those cheese-balls who criticized "Dune" when it came out in 1984, you're a bunch of goobs! I've read all the books, especially the first two books several times. It is a complicated environmental, political, religious, mythological masterpiece from Frank Herbert. The movie was poorly-received in theatres because most folks that went to see it back in the day couldn't stand to sit for more than two hours, never read the books (they are heady and complex), and didn't make much of an attempt to really get into the movie. Likewise, due to having shot way too long a movie, the DiLaurentiis folks had to edit the movie hardcore so it left some gaps.

All-in-all, I was eleven years old when I saw this movie back in the 80's an I understood it just fine. I came to grasp it even more as I read the novels.

The movie is basically about royal families competing against one another for a substance known as "the spice," which represents crude oil on earth. The fremen are a parallel-Muslim-type culture that lives in the desert where the "oil" or "spice" is harvested. Complex politics and intrigue are everywhere.

The acting is SUPERB! Kyle MacLachlan was the best choice is the world to play Paul, Sting was perfect as Feyd, good ole' Kenneth MacMillan was the GREATEST Baron Harkonnen ever, and overall there was an excellent international cast. The costumes, backdrops, scenery, and TOTO SOUNDTRACK were all unforgettable. I'm a huge Toto fan anyway (saw 'em in concert recently)...David Paich, the keyboardist and main songwriter for Toto delivered some music that will give you goose pimples.

I like this extended edition because it shows deleted scenes that add SO MUCH to this movie!!

Dune is quirky at times with some whispering and drawn-out scenes but in general it is so much fun, so heady, so vast, and despite the wild fantasy world we see in it, it seems believable at times. Fun trip. Worth every penny....

It's worth the spice to buy!

Loved it, but really want the extra-long version.

4 out of 5 stars I don't know why I like this, I just do-.......2007-05-11

I am a huge fan of the entire Dune legacy. The films, the mini series... books (Frank Herbert's- haven't read the son's yet because it always tics me off when something good is dragged out long after the originator is gone... who knows if these books were part of Frank's vision- BUT I digress)

Where was I, oh yeah. Love Dune. Though this version is not true to the book, it has some true merit. You have to remember that it is from the 80s and forgive the effects, but if you are looking for sort of a cliff notes version of the storyline, this is it. Just don't watch it in place the book and go to a book club thinking you know the story.

Besides, you get to see all sorts of actors much younger than they are now, Patrick Stewart, Kyle M, Sting, and that dude from Quantam Leap just to name a few.

Good movie fodder to watch, and who cares what happens next- for he is the Kwisatz Haderach.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it then and I still like it now, more than ever..........2007-05-11

David Lynch's vision and take on Dune may not compare to the book from which it is taken, but as a stand alone movie, both in its theatrical, as well as in its lengthened (directed by Alan Smithee...) version, are a product that can be considered valid.

The story is there, in its essence, the characters are there, although not really all as in the Novel, but then there is really no need for all of them, since it would just complicate an already intricate storyline.

Suffice it to say that this movie, even after all these many years, can still stand a comparison with newer Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies.
The style, the actors, the music and the scenery alone, lend it an aura of mythical proportions and this makes it far more than just another "cult" movie, but rather the vision of a true artist, confronted with a vision of another artist and mixing his own to the latter, and in this, David Lynch truly excels.

The cast includes a very young Kyle MacLachlan, masters of the trade, such as Max von Sydow, Juergen Prochnow, Patrick Stewart, Sian Phillips, Jose Ferrer, Freddie Jones and many others, whose talents are undisputed to give life to so bigger-than-life characters.

For the first time ever, we get both "takes" on the movie on a single, double-sided disc. One, as mentioned before, the Theatrical version, and the second, the lengthened TV version of the same, in 2.35:1 ratio and in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Stereo.

For the price this is a well worthy buy, unless you already own an HD-DVD Player, in which case you may also opt to have that copy, but be warned, that copy only includes the theatrical version.

3 out of 5 stars Before there was Star Wars.......2007-04-15

Some fun facts:
Dune was written and published in 1965
Star Wars was released in 1978
Dune the movie was released in 1984

I first saw Star Wars in the theaters in 1978 and became hooked to the series.
I never watched Dune or read it until recently and this is my take on the whole thing.

When I sat down and watched Dune I was surprised by the cheap sets and poor special effects. Star Wars had this movie beat hands down.
However, when it comes to the story of Dune: it is a great and amazing plot and adventure. I can now see where George Lucas was inspired for Star Wars.

As far as this DVD it has lots of hours of entertainment. You just have to get past some of the cheesy sets and filming.

All in all its a good DVD to have in your collection.

Don't be surprised if you feel a dry, tickling sensation in the back of your throat after watching the slam-bang racing documentary Dust to Glory. It's probably from the lingering sand and silt spewed from the knobby wheels of an array of machines that skitter from one end of the Baja Peninsula to the other. Using 90 cameras in a variety of formats, director Dana Brown captures the giddy danger of the race with truly visceral force. In 1967, a few California thrill-seekers had the Eureka spirit to take their homemade race cars for some whooping-up in the wide-open land just a few hours away. Since then, the Baja 1000 has turned into a party-fueled happening that's more akin to Burning Man than the Indy 500. It's billed as the world's longest nonstop race, running point-to-point for 1,000 miles through the Mexican desert from Tijuana to La Paz--pretty much the entire length of Baja.

Dana Brown is the son of Bruce Brown, whose 1966 film The Endless Summer sparked a surfing craze, and still holds up as an incomparable ode to the existential surfing lifestyle. Dust to Glory is by no means so profound and uses more of a Warren Miller thrill-marketing style (he of the annual throwaway extreme-skiing films). Cameras swoop down from helicopters, careen through silt, and are put into tracks over which vehicles pass at extreme speeds. In spite of the adrenaline rush, Dust to Glory is ultimately more about what people think about the higher implications of the competition. One veteran finisher describes it this way: "It's like having all 10,000 close calls of your life in one day. It makes regular life feel like slow-motion." --Ted Fry

Roberts, and packed with awesome helicopter footage, in-your-face POV shots and stories of raw courage, Dust to Glory follows a wild assortment of motorcycles, dune buggies, ATV quads and tricked-out trucks in a 32-hour dash across 1,000 miles of unforgiving terrain and delivers such pulse-pounding thrills that "you feel like you've been there" (LA Weekly)!

If you call yourself a fan of off-road racing, then this is a film that you need to have at the top of your DVD collection. With some of the most awsome footage that I personally have ever seen and an awsome narration by the director, the story of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 takes on a whole new light. This is a must see.

This is one of the best off road movies I have ever seen. This movie definately gets the insight of the Baja 1000 and tells the story through the riders and drivers point of view, along with other point of views. This is my favorite movie, by far.

    Sting as Feyd-Rautha
Stewart, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt. --Jim Emerson

    DVD features
Melange fans have a lot to be excited about with this impressive edition of Dune, though the "Extended Edition" label is a bit misleading. If you are expecting the mythic 4 hour "David Lynch preferred" version that is rumored to be sitting in a vault, don't get your hopes up. This isn't it. In an attempt to quickly sober spice-fueled giddy fans, producer Raffaella De Laurentiis (daughter of Dino De Laurentiis) immediately reveals in the 'Deleted Scenes' introduction that the rumored 4 hour version is just that; a rumor. What this DVD set does contain is the 2 Hour 17 Minute original theatrical release digitally remastered, available for the first time in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 surround sound. The presentation on this edition is a drastic improvement from the original letterboxed release. On the flipside of the DVD

    Knife fight!
is the alternate 2 hour 57 minute version cut for television. As many fans know, this 'extended' version was disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee;" the name used by directors whose film was taken away and recut against their wishes. There is some new material in the 14 minutes of deleted scenes offering a bit more background into the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the Kwisatz Haderach prophecy and the Fremen culture and their struggle. All other extras focus on the international production crew of Dune including the design team, special effects, and short documentaries on the miniature models and wardrobe designs. Disappointingly, there are no appearances in the bonus features by any of the original cast or Lynch himself. However, many of the production crew members talk openly about working with David Lynch and his artistic involvement in the visual process. To cap it off, this edition comes in a very stylish and sturdy DVD tin that opens like a keep case. --Rob Bracco

The IMAX film Blue Planet offers an eloquent reminder--and a cautionary warning--that the planet Earth is a delicate living organism, constantly reshaped and rejuvenated by the awesome forces of nature. The film targets a grade-school audience but will prove informative to anyone fascinated by our home planet's evolution. Hurricanes, glaciers, volcanoes, thunderstorms, asteroid impacts, undersea furnace vents, and earthquakes are all explored as a system of interconnected forces that ensure the planet's survival. The difference between this and other nature films is that the Earth's delicacy is emphasized by stunning views from space, filmed in the IMAX format by NASA astronauts in orbit 200 miles above the Earth's surface. With astonishing clarity, this orbital perspective supports the film's ultimate purpose: to reveal the awesome beauty of the Earth, and to emphasize that we, the custodians of this miraculous gift, are also the greatest threat to the planet's delicate health. Proof of man's destructive influence offers a sobering reminder that our responsibility toward nature is perpetual, essential, and routinely abused.

Blue Planet combines state-of-the-art sound and image, principally directed by Ben Burtt, the Oscar-winning sound designer whose credits include the original Star Wars trilogy. No home-theater system could do full justice to the film's technical achievement, but the sights and sounds of Blue Planet are awesome nonetheless, and it's impossible to overstate the importance of the film's message and its hopeful emphasis on the potentially wondrous future of our one and only home. --Jeff Shannon

This film not only has amazing filming and captures the beauty of our planet, but is also a wonderful Earth Science class summary.

2 out of 5 stars Dreary, boring, and too correctly spoken.......2006-07-13

This is a disappointingly boring and formulaic show. Basically we get hit over the head with how miserable we are making the earth. All right, already. Tell me thirty six more times.

Whenever I hear the word "evolved" in a show about life on earth it annoys me. It is the new religion, the new dogma. It is just as dogmatic as its religious competition preaching Jehovah or Allah or some other fictional character. Why can't the evolution people just realize that someone very brilliant designed the tiger and the peach, and stop pretending that they just grew out of the soil, like a can of tomato sauce growing out of the dusty rocks on the moon.

The announcer is annoying as hell. She pronounces every word perfectly and bloodlessly. She speaks acceptably and "beautifully", so beautifully that it is ugly. Her speech is acceptable, yours is not. It's a bunch of bull. I took speech classes too, and I had the sense to ignore them. They get in the way of honest communication.

The environmentalists feel that they need to bang us over the head every chance they get, telling us how humanity is ruining the planet, and you can sympathize because our government doesn't give a damn about pollution, and in fact revels in it, since it means that their rich campaign contributors will save money by not having to clean up after themselves, making the campaign contributions excellent investments, paying huge profits. It does pay to own the U.S. government, so they let you do whatever you want. One hand washes the other.

Sometimes they showed us images of green or blue or white swirls, and they told us it was the Himalayas or Sri Lanka or something, and they really needed to use arrows to show us what they were referring to. All I saw was a bunch of colored swirls. Why couldn't they just use an arrow to point out where to look?

Imax should have thrown propriety and predictability and preachiness away and given us an interesting show. But they weren't creative enough to do that. So they gave us the same old stuff, preaching the same old new religion, and spoken the way they were taught to speak, artificially.

5 out of 5 stars Good Job production team.......2005-10-27

It a very beautiful movie, giving us a perspective of how wonderful Mother Earth is!
Photography and narration is great. The team has done a great job, relating the analogy of an Astronaut to a space shuttle as Man to earth.
It opens up ones mind to the wonders of Gods creation and Mans destruction by depleting natural resources. A movie well made and drives home a point well worth it!

3 out of 5 stars A natural alternative to Lunesta.......2005-10-13

OK...to start off with the positive, this DVD does have great sound and crisp, vibrant video footage. Also within the 40 minutes of this DVD, you will come away with a good understanding of the big picture of our planet and how our planet's atmosphere, oceans, land, life and and pollution are all interrelated. It is also explained in a way that makes it easy to understand. If you are an adult with with a true interest in Earth science then you can add a star or two to my rating.

I do not recommend this DVD for children. It will be a real sleeper for them! The very calming voice of the narrator and fairy tale type of music in the background will put almost any adolescent to sleep. I say this because I am a high school science teacher and have shown this to my students. While doing so I have had to nudge my students or get their attention to stay awake. Those that were awake had that glazed over look in their eyes. There are better videos out there for students that are more exciting and just as informative.

2 out of 5 stars My Blue Planet Review.......2005-10-11

This movie was not very interesting. I'm shocked at how amazingly BORING this movie was compared to most IMAX films. I watched it as a classroom film. I watched two students fall asleep. One child left the room to go to the bathroom, and didn't come back for 10 minutes! I appreciate what these people were trying to teach us but it would have been nice if they had made it interesting.

The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick Stewart, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt. The DVD contains the original release version; a shorter version cut for television has been disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee." --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Just clarifying a point made earlier.......2006-11-15

This is the 'short' version (2hr 17min) and the only version finally approved by David Lynch. The extended version (which can be bought here as well) is the one that Lynch disowned, insisting that it be labeled 'directed by Alan Smithee', the name used when a director refuses to put his or her name on a finished film. In my opinion, however, the extended version is much more complete, and regardless of having been disowned by Lynch, provides a lot more background and insight into the characters in the film, and is almost word for word from the book. Much more so than this version, which assumes the watcher has read the book and knows the background. It's just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but I recently purchased the other version available here which includes both versions of the film, both David Lynch's and 'Alan Smithee's' films, and it's only 2 dollars more than this one, and comes in a neat collectors tin with nice paperwork inside and a 2-sided DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome to another level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-10-24

I saw this movie as a kid and was amazed at the graphics and effects of it. Sting looked awesome as a killer. I wish there was even more to it. Wish he would release the rest before he goes.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2006-08-31

So awful you have to laugh to keep from crying. The dialogue is almost impossible to listen to, the acting is wooden and at times ridiculous, and the special effects are very, very dated. It reminded me of the old "Lost in Space" TV program, and that isn't good.

    5 out of 5 stars David Lynch's Misunderstood Epic.......2006-07-31

Before David Lynch made the masterful&creepy "Mulholland Drive",he attempted-nobly-to put Frank Herbert's epic on the silver screen.Instead of trying to stay EXACTLY true to the story,he did keep its spirit. He doesn't explain too much, such as with the experiences of the Spice.

Kyle MacLachlan is the excellent--and DEFINITIVE--Paul Muad'Dib.He shows how the young man,who goes from losing his father&living in exile with the Fremen, becomes a messianic leader. His transformation is believable&sympathetic.

Sean Young has a VERY small role as Chani, who's more important in the book than the movie. Her romance with Paul is hardly explained.

Virginia Madsen, who was in the recent pinot film noir "Sideways" has a small role as Princess Irulan, the Emperor's daughter who is forced into a loveless marriage with Paul.It is interesting that in the book,Princess Irulan's memories form the backbone&frame Paul's experiences.

Sian Phillips&Francesca Annis are both powerful as Bene Gesserit Reverend Mothers.Francesca Annis' role goes from being a widow to a powerful&respected Reverend Mother among the Fremen. In the book,Jessica is merely Duke Leto Atreides' concubine, whom he regrets not marrying;in the movie,Jessica is Duke Leto's wife.

Patrick Stewart has a pleasant role as Paul's mentor,Gurney Halleck.Who knew one day he'd be Capt.Picard?

Considering the time period, the special effects in "Dune" are excellent;the setting is believable. It's a fascinating&aesthetically marvelous movie.

3 out of 5 stars Miss it with a clear conscience.......2006-07-17

When I was a kid, I tore through all of the first books in the Dune series, and loved them. But several decades later, the original story captured on film--even if made by David Lynch and Dino De Laurentiis--left me lukewarm.

In 1984, I don't recall being aware that it had come out, much less that it was a flop. I watched the whole VHS tape. Now I know why it flopped.

The story quickly came back to me: the evil Baron, Paul Atreides (Kyle McLachlan), his father the Duke, the religious mystical quality--and especially the worms on the desert planet, Arrakis, where Paul's family meets its fate.

But really, the politics is internecine, and dare I say, stupid, along with some acting, early portions of the script and many weird sci-fi machines, space ships, security shields, and so on.

There's some magic in remembering the story, no matter how contrived-looking some scenes. I enjoyed seeing Paul struggle up the side of a giant worm and ride to battle. But this film by no means meets the usual standards of its makers.

The bottom line: this film is best for unapologetic Dune junkies. Everyone else can miss it with a clear conscience.

Theater star Sarah Brightman turns up the heat in this sexy, baroque DVD counterpart to her 2003 world music CD, Harem. Brightman's artistic purpose on that album--marrying the rhythms of the Middle East to her otherwordly pop sound (as opposed to her boomy, operatic sound)--aren't lost here, but don't expect to catch a glimpse of such exciting studio collaborators as violin star Nigel Kennedy amidst countless shots of the diva in various states of undress. The lavish visual production sets several songs in exotic recreations of fabled harems, where lust is tempered by decorum but sex is clearly on the menu. For a change, Brightman's ethereal version of "Stranger in Paradise" (from Kismet) is shot against a starkly beautiful, mountainous backdrop, and "What You Never Know," a song about the passage of time, includes touching images of children and old people. --Tom Keogh

This is a great dvd to watch. Sarah does a brief interview before each song, she has such a beautiful voice either in her music or her interviews.

4 out of 5 stars Sarah Brightman - Harem Desert Fantasy (2003).......2006-02-03

Over all I really enjoyed this DVD - it was nice, light entertainment!

    Positives:
    - Beautiful/creative/interesting/colourful costumes and sets
    - Features stunning Arabian terrain and architecture
    - Nice accompaniment to the music
    - Sarah provides a commentary between songs
    - 'Behind the Scenes' is just as entertaining as the music
    - A very sensual production (would not call it 'dirty' though! - some images have sexual connotations and Sarah is often scantly clad, but is stunning. A 40-something year old beauty who is proud to show off her body...good on her!)

    Negatives:
    - A few too many scenes of Sarah striking the same pose made things repetitive
    - Would have been nice to see some of the other Harem songs make it to music video e.g. Arabian Nights
