Noble Adams, a legendary tracker, is coaxed out of retirement to hunt down crazed killer Red Jack Stilwell and his gang. Now it's kill or be killed in a West so wild you can never turn your back on a stranger.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars No Academy Awards Here.......2006-01-14

A pretty lame western from all aspects. Weak story line, poor character development and the acting (if one can call it that)was almost non-existant. The movie was filmed in beautiful locations however, the director was not even interested enough in the project to shoot in locations void of jet trails in the sky.

If you like westerns like I do, I would not watch this one more than once. I was very relieved when it ended, so relieved I skipped the credits at the end.

4 out of 5 stars Good morality tale.......2005-10-23

Westerns seem uniquely well suited for the presentation of (near) epic morality tales. Even when made for television they lend themselves to the Big Issues. Beautifully filmed in New Mexico, THE TRACKER is a 1988 HBO production that touches on the stuff with deep roots - need and obligation, trust and home. Mostly, though, it about vengeance and the fine line between the Good and the Bad.

The Bad is ably portrayed by Scott Wilson, who's probably best remembered as Robert Blake's killing-spree partner in In Cold Blood. Wilson plays fervent Danite and general sicko Jack `Red Jack' Stillwell. The legendary Danites, as the movie explains, were a perverted branch of Mormons who cleansed the Earth by indiscriminate murder. When Red Jack and gang invade New Mexico Federal Marshal Lane Crawford (David Huddleston) is called on to track them down, dead or alive. But Crawford isn't as young as he used to be, and he needs help. He calls on old friend and renowned tracker Noble Adams (Kris Kristofferson - `even the Apaches were afraid of Adams.') Although inwardly reluctant, Adams agrees to track down the bad guys. Even more reluctant is he to allow his half-son Tom (Mark Moses) to tag along, but the young man is set on it. And so it is three hunting six - four bad guys and two female hostages.

Although Kristofferson sometimes comes across a little detached he doesn't do anything here to embarrass Kevin Jarre's smart script or John Guillermin's taut direction. Noble Adams is more complex than Kristofferson plays him. He's a reluctant avenger, a brutal killer when the situation demands it, a man who sends his son off to college and learns that his return home may not be permanent. It's the type of character western fans like to cheer for, one that's best developed by an actor who can play all the angles. We cheer for Adams, alright, but we're a lot more interested when Wilson's Red Jack is on the screen. All that doesn't make THE TRACKER any less a very good western, nor one that I wouldn't hesitate to heartily endorse.

3 out of 5 stars Formulaic HBO entry.......2003-09-06

Plot, drama, suspense, character development -- this western has them all, to reasonable measure. It seems awfully like other HBO movies I have seen. If you like westerns, this may be a candidate for an evening's entertainment. If you like exceptional westerns, try "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "A Big Hand for the Little Lady", "El Mariachi", "Stagecoach" or the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns.

5 out of 5 stars The Tracker.......2002-11-16

I bought this dvd on a whim... It is a great western and now one of my classics in my own personal collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Hitting.......2002-08-26

Noble Adams (Kris Kristofferson) is a retired tracker. He runs a ranch and has a wife. He wants nothing to do with his former life. An old friend is calling in a favor and Noble must return to the hunt one last time. Noble's son Tom (Mark Moses) has just graduated from college and has come to tell Noble that he will be living in the east and practicing law. When he finds his dad is going on a track, he headstrongly joins the chase. They will be tracking Red Jack Stilwell (Scott Wilson), a self professed Morman Avenging Angel that just broke out of prison and has been on a violent rampage. He is travelling with a kidnapped women and child.

Noble doesn't really want his son along. He doesn't think the boy can handle the brutality of the land and is worried about the brutality that his son may see in him. Noble Adams is not just any tracker, he's the best tracker ever. The law's avenger, the army refers to him as Nemisis (The God of Vengeance). Even the indians fear him. So Noble, the aging sheriff and Tom Adams, the eastern college boy set out to hunt down the ruthless Red Jack Stillwell and his gang.

Far from a typical father son bonding movie, Tom sees Noble as a cruel, harsh and exceptionally unforgiving man. But he comes to understand that the land has made him that way. Tom turns out to be just as hard but not quite as cold blooded as his father. Hard men in a hard land, doing a hard job.

This unhearalded HBO production stands up as one of the great westerns of all time. More people need to see this movie. It is a classic with no shortage of action or suspense. Although filmed a number of years ago, HBO would do well to provide us with a sequel of equal caliber.

Watch it and enjoy.

Description

Featuring a mesmerizing and fearless performance from David Gulpilil (Walkabout, Rabbit-Proof Fence), THE TRACKER is at once a mystery, an adventure, and a pointed commentary on the atrocities committed against the Aborigines. In 1922, an Aboriginal tracker leads two mounted policeman and a civilian through the Australian Outback on the hunt for a black fugitive who is charged with killing a white woman. The group struggles through extremely rugged terrain inhabited by hostile aborigines, wild animals, and poisonous reptiles. Though treated as a virtual slave by the white men leading the search, it becomes clear that the Tracker has his own agenda. Through massacre and murder the party falls into disarray, stirring up questions of what is black and what is white and who is leading whom.

5 out of 5 stars The many tracks to justice.......2007-03-24

When Philip Noyce directed "Rabbit-proof Fence" - a film about Aborigine children escaping white captivity - he hired David Gulpilil in the role of the "black tracker". With forty thousand years of experience in the Australian bush under their belts [sic?], the Aborigines are trackers without peer. The European invaders quickly learned to use them in tracing missing children, criminals and other tasks. In the "Special Features" of "Rabbit-proof Fence", Noyce comments on his sudden awareness that Gulpilil virtually redefined the role. With no lines - none are needed - David makes clear that an Aborigine would find the children. But he "misses" them in passing, glancing over his shoulder to where they were hiding in the scrub. He presumed the real tracker sent after them had done something similar. In this film, David Gulpilil is the lead role, and clearly defines it in his own way. Even writer-director de Heer is unlikely have the savvy to devise a script to achieve what Gulpilil accomplishes here.

The story is of three whites, two of whom are policemen, to chase down an Aborigine murder suspect. The leader, a fanatic racist, is no exaggeration as Australian history has shown. The young policeman is an eager innocent, but flexible. To him it's part of a new job. The third white is a "squatter", conscripted to fill out the group. As "The Tracker", Gulpilil must lead them over a sparse landscape with few clues to the suspect's passage. The trail is scanty, the man elusive, and the whites are totally dependent on Gulpilil's abilities. In one scene, as the group arrives at the edge of a stony plain, the young policeman objects that there's no trail to follow. The expanse of pebbles is extensive and no sign of human passage can be made out. Gulpilil wearily points out the clues to the young man, who retires abashed as The Tracker smiles slyly. The hunt continues.

White-Aborigine relations are a sorry record, as this film dramatically portrays. Gulpilil is scorned and badgered, even by the men who so sorely need his skills. The hunters encounter a group of Aborigines, and the head policeman banters and abuses them mercilessly. Although Gulpilil warns that the Aborigines not only cannot speak English, even he doesn't understand their "different language, Boss". Resentful and frustrated, the officer shoots each member of the group. Holding up his pistol, he declares it to be "the language of this country". The hunt continues.

Director de Heer takes full advantage of the vast beauty of the Australian bush with compelling scenes. His best talents, however, come to light with the many close-ups of the tracker and white pursuers. David's expression at the killing of his fellow Aborigines is enigmatic, and he remains stoic throughout the film - until the end. Even when the leader threatens Gulpilil with taking "your own ears back with me" if they don't catch the suspect. He shackles Gulpilil who must now carry a length of chains while finding the trail. As the group closes with the fugitive, the tension builds under de Heer's skilful touch. The hunt continues.

De Heer adds some interesting nuances to this film. There are scenes introduced or portrayed by Aborigine-style paintings. The opening is one such, as are the killings of the Aborigine group and others. Additionally, de Heer uses Archie Roach, one of Australia's "stolen generation" to provide the background music - not quite Aborigine and not quite European. The effect adds fresh levels of intensity to an already gripping story. And the fugitive? De Heer's inventive story concludes with a surprising twist, one that North Americans may find daunting to comprehend. All the more reason to see this film for its revelations. 5 out of 5 stars Illuminating trek through the Australian outback.......2006-09-15

Rolf de Heer's outstanding film, "The Tracker" is a visually stunning odyssey through the remote, unforgiving Australian bush and liberally filled with social commentary.

The year is 1922 and a band of three mounted policeman is being lead by an aboriginal known as The Tracker, played by David Gulpilil. They are following another native Australian accused of murdering a white woman. The band is lead by The Fanatic played by Gary Sweet, a murderous bigoted Australian, who thinks of native Aboriginals as subhuman. Along the trail he displays his ruthlessness by shooting innocent blacks the group come across. Also along for the ride is a young naive Damon Gameau whose morality has yet to be corrupted towards racial inequality.

As the group move deeper and deeper into Aboriginal territory and away from civilization, The Tracker who is chained by the Fanatic like a dog, begins to follow his own agenda within the pursuit. As they continue, the Follower is forced to choose between the intolerant racist ideology of the Fanatic and fair and broad minded views of the Tracker.

Rolf de Heers brilliant depiction of the despicable racism evidenced in Australia at that time serves as a reminder that the dehumanization of anyone regardless of their differences cannot be condoned.

5 out of 5 stars Clash in Australia: Aborigine and White.......2006-01-11

It's impossible not to be a David Gulpilil fan...he can do no wrong in any film. He exudes an aboriginal dignity in the same way that Toshire Mifune exudes a samurai dignity. This is a film about his assignment as a tracker hired to find an Aborigine criminal. The film examines who is the criminal and who is the innocent...who has standing in the bush wilderness and who does not. A very interesting film and well worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars "All Men Choose The Path They Walk" ~ "Somewhere In Australia".......2005-10-30

I have been a big fan of Australian movies since '71 when I first saw a very young aborigine named David Gulpilil in 'Walkabout' and have followed his film career ever since. He had a major role in one of my all-time favorite movies 'The Last Wave' in '79, made a very brief appearance at the beginning of 'The Right Stuff' in '83, a cameo in 'Crocodile Dundee' in '86, another cameo in 'Dead Heart' in '97 and then landed another major role in '02 in the highly acclaimed 'Rabbit-Proof Fence.'

Oddly enough David's signature role was filmed in the same year as 'Rabbit-Proof Fence.' I'm talking about a movie that is totally unknown the the U.S.A. but was awarded the 'Best Film' award and 'Best Actor' award for David by the Australian Film Critics Circle. The film is 'The Tracker.'

This is one of my favorite movies about the Australian aborigines. The year is 1922 and David, known only as 'the Tracker' is guiding three white officials through the outback in search of another aborigine accused of killing a white woman. During the journey 'the Tracker' is forced to endure not only derogatory treatment from the 'the Fanatic' in charge (Gary Sweet) but must witness in silence the arbitary killing of innocent aborigines encountered along way. As tensions continue to build 'the Tracker' quietly plans his revenge and in the end true justice, aboriginal justice, is dealt out.

David Gulpilil dominates this film, he's absolutely amazing! Every expression, every gesture is filled with understanding, rage and humor. This is in every way his movie. Saying that, I also want to make mention of the wonderful supporting role played by Damon Gamean as 'the Follower.' His inner journey of personal transformation is extraordinary and a perfect counterbalance to David.

This film was both written and directed by Rolf De Heer. I'm not familiar with anything else he's done, but I'm certainly going to check into his previous credits. Another important element to this film was one of the most amazing soundtracks I've ever heard. The songs and music were composed by Graham Tardif and sung by Archie Roach. Unlike alot of soundtracks that are used only as background music to enhance the story, here they were an absolutely integral part of the movie. As the band of four traveled through the Outback the music and lyrics told the history and longing of the aboriginal people. I've never experienced anything more moving and emotional in a film.

My highest possible rating! A film to be bought and enjoyed over and over again!!

2 out of 5 stars Laughably bad..........2006-08-12

One could have a cheesy sci-fi film fest with this movie,"DNA","The Wraith","Deep Impact"&"Shark Attack." This movie definitely qualifies...

In the beginning,Adrian Paul comes to earth, and being pure energy (like so many Star Trek creatures),sees the picture of an underwear model&takes on his form.He explains to a hapless earthling woman that he's out to get cosmic prison escapees. So,it's "Prison Break",except there are millions of rogue aliens roaming the universe.Great.He demonstrates how he traps their life force&zaps them back to the Galactic Big House.

Okay,it lacks plot,it lacks great special effects---what's wrong with that?

1 out of 5 stars Speechless.......2005-08-30

With such immortal lines as "Take my life force please", this is without question one of the worst "fims" ever made. The acting is so terrible you initially think..."Oh No, this is one of those 1:00 a.m. softcore cable porn filcks." Which is a perfect segway to explain the only legitimate reason to see this film, homo-erotic eye candy. Adrian Paul who for some unknown reason is found wandering the road looking like an underwear designer's wet dream, spends half of the movie half naked. Tied up on an "exam" table bound at the wrists and ankles, and wearing nothing but his skin-tight Calvins, our hero is "ripe for the taking", and wouldn't last a minute in the Castro. Surrounding him are guys in military uniforms, ready to "turn up the heat." At any second you expect that grinding music to start and the evil military men "have their way" with our hapless and helpless alien. If eye candy is the objective, then it's worth the cheap price. If the viewer is looking for thought provoking science fiction, look somewhere else. And in the meantime, who knows there may be a sequel entitled "Alien in the bunkhouse", but until then this will have to do.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but could have been better........2003-08-31

Over all I liked it. The flashbacks could have been eliminated, we had just seen those scenes. Also, scenes from another episode could have been added if there were no flashbacks. The episode when Zin is entombed under the Watchfire would have been my choice. It flows with the finding of the key. This would have easily raised my rating to 4 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Bad attempt to make a movie out of a tv series.......2003-03-25

When I ordered this I thought I was getting the pilot plus one or two other episodes from the TV series tracker, what I got was a poorly edited attempt to make a movie from the bare bones of three episodes (the pilot and two episodes from near the end of the series). In order to fit these three episodes into 143 minute running time they cut the episodes to the bare minimum, yet for some reason left in five minutes of flash backs that made perfect sense for tv episodes that are shown weeks apart but much less sense when we had seen scenes less than half an hour before. What really made me mad is the fact that they didn't include the last episode in the mix, so all you have is a poorly edited movie without a true ending. You would be better off recording the episodes off of the Sci-Fi channel while waiting for them to release the full season.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets of plot revealed.......2006-11-16

I'm a full-time writer. I spend about five hours a day spinning tales
but the Blockbuster Plot material has given me a sort of template to set my writing down inside. I just can't tell you how much Martha Alderson is
changing my writing life.

I couldn't finish. I could begin and I could end but I couldn't finish. It was because the middle of my novels caused me so much pain that I'd stop and start another one. Martha Alderson's Blockbuster Plots, book and DVD''s ended that pain.

This all reminds me of a pair of shoes that hurt my feet. Then one day I lined them and they felt fine. A simple step left out -- made me wince when I walked and cushions fixed it. Martha provided me with the cushions I needed -- to walk comfortably through my writing life. She showed me how to take my unique ways, put her cushions in them and walk with a smile.

I have nine incomplete novels. Good ones, heck maybe great masterpieces, we'll I'm not all that but I am now on my way to finishing. And that's why I think Martha's opinion about plot is genius. And she's made those tools available to anyone who want's to invest in them. If you're a business person that knows how to figure cost to benefit ratios, this is an investment - way up on the benefit side. And would you believe it, it took me years to find this.

Blessings,
Pastor Sid Chaney

P.S. With Martha's materials mastered you win. It's gives you a template like a skeleton or a paint by number to drop your writing in and you won't find it anyplace else, not like this. She also shows you how to literally hang your plot on walls. How to fill them in with multi-colors to express your whole book vividly. How to plaster them around you, so you can see in one panoramic view, your whole creation at once. That's worth almost any price. Buy her stuff, master it, use it and it may make all your writing dreams come true. At least you will get better, it will be easier and if you're not having fun already, you will.

And finally, remember, the only reason I'm writing this is because I believe deeply in what Martha Alderson is doing in Blockbuster Plots.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Incredibly Helpful.......2006-02-21

The Blockbuster Plot DVD is one of the most valuable resources available to writers. It's packed with guidance, inspiration, and information that helped me turn my work from a great idea into a masterfully crafted book. I cannot recommend this enough!! Get your hands on this DVD - it is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Help .......2006-01-18

I have attended more screenwriting workshops than I want to admit. None of them, get that? None, have given me a fraction of what this DVD plot demo DVD gave me. I only wish I had seen it years ago.
The DVD gives practical, hand-on, concrete help to deepen characters, amp up the tension, conflict and suspense, and gives great insight into how to come up with depth and lasting meaning.
I can't rank this product high enough. Absolutely recommend it with no hesitation of all writers. Check it out. You'll be glad you did.

I've seen hundreds of Sci Fi movies over the years. This is one of those you'll wonder whether you've watched it or not a few years down the road. You just can't remember.

All in all, I figure it's still better to watch a so-so Sci Fi movie than "Dances With Wolves" or "Evita". This movie will end up being non-memorable, but it's preferable to being in a coma.

1 out of 5 stars Cyber (Yawn) Tracker.......2004-06-06

Watched this DVD after gettin it for free, laughable poor boring action movie, trys to be a Arnie, Sly, action epic, from the same era, but fails terribly in all departments, I realise the movie is dated, but that doesnt account for the abismal acting and meaningless and boring plot, a great film to fall asleep to or to recommend to someone you don't really like, overall i think 1 star is being too generous for this movie but i couldnt rate it any lower!

3 out of 5 stars I bought it for a dollar, and really it's not that bad.......2007-03-31

OK, sure the movie is VERY CHEESY, but it is fun in my eyes and like I said I only payed a dollar for it so maybe I'm giving this to much lea-way to this silly action/disaster movie.
After making a weather machine that causes hurricane Andrew, (Martin Sheen in full blown bad guy mode) wants to try again so he gets Luke Perry(who looks to be picking up a paycheck here) to help him and guess what, now L.A. is about to be wiped out by this thing.
Martin Sheen made this movie because his daughter Renee Estevez is in it and as stated Luke picked up a paycheck, so that tells you why they made this one. It's not really that lousy, and if mindless entertainment is what you want, for a dollar you could do worse, but don't pay anymore than that for it.

1 out of 5 stars A disaster film in more ways than one........2003-04-29

"Storm Tracker" is brought to us by Unified Film Organization. Their self-proclaimed mission is to bring the movie viewing public films which have an emphasis on inexpensive computer special effects. Really. That's all they do.

UFO Films gets a couple of familiar faces, in this case Luke Perry and Martin Sheen, to fool everyone into thinking that there might be some quality to their movies. Don't get fooled. Their "special" effects always look very cheap and they seem to throw together a script in a matter of days.

"Storm Tracker" is about a silly US government conspiracy to manipulate the weather in order to create vicious hurricanes. Supposedly, Hurricane Andrew many years ago was their doing. Yeah...uh huh. Of course, they don't want to create hurricanes to destroy their own country. That experiment simply got out of control. Their main objective is to send devastating storms toward their enemies to cause maximum damage without risking the lives of soldiers or having to launch missiles or drop bombs.

Even at a low price, you will still be wasting your money on this film. You can see nonsense like this any day of the week on free TV.

The whole thing was bad. My wife got up and left.
The acting was bad, the premise of the story was
unbeliveable. I wish I had not have bought it.

    2 out of 5 stars ok.......2001-07-21

Not bad. it works Not much in the way of frills, but it's cheap! and amusing... The movie is a little less than believeable, but for pure cheese entertainment, you can't beat it....

1 out of 5 stars Bland and wooden.......2003-09-21

This movie achieves nothing that couldn't be accomplished with a television episode a third of the length.

The acting is horrible, probably a result of the cliched and totally unoriginal dialogue.

The fight scenes are ok, but overall mediocre; look somewhere else!

      3 out of 5 stars delicious.......2002-10-12

One for the girls! If you love Russell Wong then you won't be disappointed and the buddy theme with casper Van Diem & action scenes make this an easy movie to watch-with the "Black sash" tv-series on the way.. it good to see RW in a leading role again.

      2 out of 5 stars The Typical.......2002-02-20

Russell Wong and Casper Van Dien are action guys that every now and then luck out with supporting roles in big budget films. Recently those were Romeo Must Die for Wong and Sleepy Hallow for Van Dien. Other than that they are straight to video leading men. The Tracker is the perfect illustration of this fact.

Van Dien plays a womanizing ex-cop turned slick private investigator. Wong is his former friend who recruits him for a major job, his sister (Lexa Doig) has been kidnapped and her husband murdered. But typically, the backstory is Van Dien and the sister were lovers and the brother had a hand in their split, which is why they aren't friends anymore. So they go to New York, hustle up a tough female cab driver (Francoise Robertson) who does not mind getting in harms way for cab fair (because all New York cab drivers care about their customers), and then Van Dien's ex-partner (Jason Blicker) who has no hard feeling towards Van Dien despite some seriously unresolved personal conflicts, to help out. Now that they have there crew there is only one thing to do. Solve the case of which New York mafia family is responsible by breaking everything, and everyone, in sight.

This plot makes for some good comedy. There are some silly twists. Although it is not really suppose to be funny. There are some good fights. Still, this is one of those films where you just know the good guys will never get scratched because no matter how many beatings they take, they just dust off their pants and are fine. If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you might like The Tracker. I would look elsewhere, but I do not regret seeing it. Like I said, there are some good fights, they just weren't quite good enough to save this movie.
