Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone--sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowpokes converge on a little Western burg called Silverado; they're played by Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. --Robert Horton

Worth many looks.......2007-05-14
Having grow up in the 40's & 50's, I love a good western. (even some bad ones)
But "Silverado" is right up there with the good ones.
Great cast, interesting storyline and the necessary good triumphs over evil ending.
Brian Dennehy is the perfect villain, while Kevin Kline the unexpected hero.
The rest of the cast including Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner and Jeff Goldblum keep this film moving. Never a dull moment!
Love watching it as I do many other horse operas.
Bad Copy.......2007-04-24
This is a terrific movie and is highly recommended. But Amazon advertises this product as "new" and it IS NOT. The DVD with the movie was scratched, and damaged, causing skips and gaps. Amazon does not allow ordinary feedback and has REFUSED to exchange or refund.
DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE FROM AMAZON.
Silverado.......2007-03-28
I got this DVD as a gift for my Dad. He had it on VHS, but wanted to update his collection. He really loved it.
A Very Exciting Western, With A Great Cast.......2007-01-31
This was a great Western. Very creative and adventerous, and a wonderful cast. Where else would you see a Monty Python alum as a sheriff in a Western?
This movie featured three of my favorite actors: Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, and Jeff Goldblum. It also featured one of my favorite actresses, Rosanna Arquette, though she had such a small role even the worst actress couldn't mess that role up. Kevin Costner had a youthful exhuberance that I hadn't seen since from him. And I'm just mentioning my favorites.
I'll stop before I spoil any surprises. If you want a classic western, this is one.
A modern interpretation of the classic western.......2006-12-16
An unbelievable cast, a great story, amazing cinematography, a soundtrack worthy of Aaron Copeland, action, drama, comedy: this movie has it all. I would put this movie up against anything short of a small handful of classic westerns such as the Magnificent Seven.

Product Description
Stuart Little's back in an all-new, all-animated movie! School's out for the summer and the Little Family is spending their vacation at a beautiful lakeside cabin. Leading the way is Stuart, who can't wait to become a Scout and spend his entire vacation canoeing, hiking and being the outdoorsy little guy he claims to be. But, there is something lurking in the forest who could spoil all the fun: THE BEAST; a mean and isolated forest terror who rules the local animals with an iron paw. When Snowbell is taken prisoner, a Little bravery goes a long way as Stuart, along with his new friend, Reeko, a skunk, heroically rescues him, frees the other woodland creatures and outwits the wily Beast. It's a big job for a Little mouse, but someone's got to do it! Featuring the voice talents of Michael J. Fox, Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie and Wayne Brady as Stuart's newest pal Reeko, it's the next big thing in Little adventure!

Goodbye realistic family with an implausible child, hello animated world of make believe. Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild takes a marked departure from the realistic footage of the Little family and a skillfully animated mouse son in Stuart Little and Stuart Little 2 with this fully animated presentation that views like just another animated cartoon television show. That said, the story and action are good. While Stuart may be tiny and have a reputation as delicate, he's determined to prove his strength and independence during his family's summer stay in a cabin on the shores of Lake Garland. Stuart (voiced by Michael J. Fox) pleads to be allowed to join the Lake Scouts where he seems destined to be unsuccessful in spite of much perseverance. He develops an unlikely friendship with a skunk named Reeko (voiced by Wayne Brady), but that friendship leads Stuart and his cat Snowbell (voiced this time by Kevin Schon) to the brink of disaster with "The Beast" that lives in the woods. Can courage, ingenuity and the bonds of true friendship overcome the wrath and brute strength of a ferocious monster? This third movie in the Stuart Little collection remains true to its predecessors in its wholesome message and fast-paced adventure, but the full animation is definitely disappointing. Customer Reviews:
Great movie.......2007-04-03
My son loves this movie and all his other Stuart Little movies. Was shipped on time and it great condiction. FYI it is an animated movie, not like the first two.
DVD automatically displays English subtitles. (Frustrating!).......2006-04-22
My DVD automatically displays English subtitles as the default setting. This happens every time we play it. I got it for my niece who's 4, and she always has to ask someone to reset it to display no subtitles. ( She otherwise can just hit the play button to start a DVD.) I was NOT happy with that. This info should have been stated on this website. I would never have bought it if I knew this. Poorly made cartoon, although my niece still watches it because she likes Stuart.
OK Story, Very Disappointing Animation.......2006-03-26
The only good news about the second sequel to `Stuart Little' is that you can hear the voices of three principal actors of the original -- Michael J. Fox, Geena Davies, and Hugh Laurie. Except that, I can find nothing that would justify the decision of making another entry into the series. There is no state-of-the-art images merging seamlessly the live-action and CGI-created creatures. So what's the point of making this one?
The film is all shot in animation, and the animation is just cheesy. I know I should not expect Pixar in direct-to-video films, but it is not a totally happy thing to see the characters with clunky designs, whose monotonous movement looks so awkward that you might remember the unnaturally moving heads or arms of the characters on video games made five or six years ago, or the filmed version of `Final Fantasy.' Frankly this animation needs better software.
At least, the filmmakers are wise not to change the basic points of the `SL' world. Again we are to meet the Little Family, this time going on vacation for summer. Stuart joins in the `Lake Scout' with his brother George, which results in another misadventure on the lake as you know he would.
The story gets more interesting when a new character Reeko wisecracking skunk appears in the forest where, it is rumored, mighty and fearful `Beast' rules mercilessly. Somehow this skunk likes Stewart Little, and Stewart the skunk, and their friendship is tested when Snowbell gets into a big trouble.
Virginia Madsen and Peter MacNicol also provide voices, but that doesn't add much to the entire film.
Regular characters like Mr. and Mrs. Little, or Monty come back, but the film spends pretty much time to introduce and follow the story of the skunk, who is not particularly a funny character. There is an unnecessary `funky' musical sequence about Rikko `skunk with a funk' which completely misunderstands the target audiences of the film.
Though kids might enjoy it, `SL3' is a huge disappointment after watching two previous works, especially the rousing finale of `SL2.' The reason why they shot this film fully in unremarkable animation still mystifies me.
TOO MUCH SKUNK.......2006-03-08
While I'm sure the kids will enjoy this third entry in the STUART LITTLE franchise, from an adult's point of view, it's not as good as the first two. Blame it on the computer generated uninspired animation; blame it on the really bad songs (how many parents will have to explain what a derriere is?); or maybe it's got too much skunk in it. While the voice talents of Michael J. Fox, Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie return, Wayne Brady is a little too annoying and "gangsta" to be much fun. Why do they always have to put in an actor who has to speak hip and jive when it really has nothing to do with the character? Oh, well...I'm sure our youth of today will identify with his funk/rap song, but I'm just a little tired of it. Anyway, we do get Virginia Madsen as the voice of the Beast and Stuart manages to be a hero...so if I'm being too picky, sorry! But it's okay for the family.
expensive voices, cheap animation.......2006-03-06
This entire movie is animated, unlike the first two Stuart Little movies. I was willing to accept that since it is a third movie that went straight to video. All the big name voices are in it ....all the people from the last movies. The animation is that low budget computer generated stuff you see in the Barbie movies. The story is okay but no comparison to the first two. I will say this about it though....my 4yr old loves it. I did get it for her so all in all it is a fine movie...just not the quality you would expect having seen the first two.

- No trae extras.

Pilot Confusion.......2004-09-25
I was a DUE SOUTH fan from the show's beginning to its end. That it was on the air for such a short time is unfair. The last two episodes of the series were fantastic. However, I have a huge complaint. Why on earth doesn't someone recall the first season so they can add the pilot to the disc? Or, at least, put the pilot on its on disc. Whoever got the bright idea of adding the pilot to season 3 as a bonus should have realized that this wasn't such a brilliant idea after all. To have to buy season 3 just to watch the pilot is ridiculous. It's too confusing and doesn't make any sense. Someone please do something!
Basic, but sufficient.......2004-04-22
The last episodes (and easily among the best) of Due South are presented here with no frills or extras, but with good quality sound and picture. (A bit like Fraser himself, if you think about it.) The two parter is presented exactly as it aired, complete with two sets of opening and closing credits and a "previously on Due South," at the beginning of the second episode (which covers the episode you have most likely just finished watching).
Still, this episode represents all that is best about Due South, the humor (and slight absurdity, especially with the para-Mounties, parachuting in to save the day in their dress uniforms), the touching (the story of Fraser's mother's death is dealt with), and the wonderful wit of the writers. Add in the appearance of both Ray Vecchios, an especially good soundtrack (above even Due South's average high standards), and the glimpse into the future for the main characters, and you've got an episode that is well worth owning.
The best episode of the last season!.......2004-03-05
This two-parter is probably the best episode of the last season. The original Ray returns as the show explains his disappearance.
Platinum Disc Corp has made an excellent DVD on this title, complete with surround sound. This is surprising as Platinum generally only does Public Domain titles (which they do a very good job with).
I only gave it 4 stars because there are no extras, alternate languages, or subtitles.
This is now available in the Canadian Season 4 set, so you may not want to duplicate your purchases.

An OK mix of prime and weathered Gable.......2007-05-14
This Fox series includes my favorite Gable film: "Call of the Wild". Some complain this film bears little resemblance to London's book of the same title. So what. That's Hollywood's license. London's story is just a yarn too, and not nearly as entertaining. Actually, I think of Loretta Young as being the dominant character in this film, as she largely controls the eventual relationships between the main characters. The relationship between Gable, Loretta and her husband near the end of the film is reminiscent of the later "Casablanca", but the emotional content is much more intense because of the personalities and physiques of this duo and the circumstance of appearance of Loretta's husband. Off the screen, Gable developed strong relationahips with both Loretta and Buck, which shows in the film. Gable offered as much as $2000. for the dog, but the owner wouldn't budge. Buck really hated the villain, Reginald Qwen, as he showed in the film. Unlike most of Gable's films, he had a strong sidekick in the form of Jack Oakie, which is one reason I like this film. Initially, Gable was reluctant to do a film with Oakie, a notorious scene stealer. Most people seem to miss the main lesson of this film. Gable, Oakie, and Buck represent a team of legitimate,if rather primitive, venture capitalists. They try to grab as much as they can, but within limits of respectability, and they are loyal to their partners. Villain Owens represents the worst type of pretentious cutthroat robber baron, who ruthlessly eliminates his competition and disposes of his associates when they are no long essential to his ambitions. Loretta's ethos is "You get what you disserve, and no more": Jack London's supposed socialist ethos. When it comes to the choice between Gable and her husband, she exercises this ethos, to Gable's chagrin. This is a fun film to watch: great adventure and comrady, unsurpassed romance and heartbreak.
"The Tall Men", made 20 years later and in color, is another frontier adventure-romance. In some repects, it echoes "Call of the Wild". We again have a beautiful woman rescued in a blizzard. At the film ending, she again has to choose between Gable and the other man. But the on again-off again romances between Jane Russell and these two men aren't nearly as convincing as in "Call of the Wild". In some respects, this film recalls "Red River", with its vast cattle herd, long trail drive, problems with Native Americans and jayhawkers and conflicts between its leaders. There is even an echo of director Raoul Walsh's earlier film "Dark Command", in that Gable and his brother evidently had spent some time riding with Quantrill's notorious raiders during the recent Civil War. The female lead again has to choose between a poor down to earth gunslinger and a sophisticated but overambitious rival who wants her for an ornament.
"Soldier of Fortune" just isn't my kind of movie. Too comtemporary and tame. However, I found the run with commentary worthwhile. The Gable-Harlow "China Seas", of the 1930s, is a much more entertaining yarn involving Hong Kong, if in B&W. Gable's 1957 MGM movie "Band of Angels" would have been much more desirable as another choice from his late career. This might be thought of as Raoul Walsh's version of "Gone with the Wind"
"They don't make them like these anymore".......2007-02-06
Three excellent Gable films with great stars, and well written story lines. A lot of action with captivating stories. You can't go wrong on purchasing these babies! These are Classics!
Enjoy!
John
anamorphic or not.......2006-12-29
Seeing as 20th Century Fox is advertising The true Story of Jesse Jaemes in its upcoming release in March as 1.33 ratio I would like to know from anyone if The Tall Men and Soldier of Fortune are Anamorphic as the info on here states all 3 films are 1.33. I collect all CinemaScope films from 1953 to 1967 but why does Fox have to release in 1.33?
Entertaining Western with shades of "Red River.".......2006-11-10
Ben Allison (Clark Gable) and his brother Clint (Cameron Mitchell) are riding to the gold fields of Montana... In town, Nathan Stark (Robert Ryan) proposes to Ben the chance to gain big money...
Stark names Ben his trail boss, the one to drive 4,000 heads of cattle l,500 miles from San Antone, Texas to Montana...
On his way to San Antone, Ben rescues Nella Turner (Jane Russell) from Sioux attack, and falls in love with her...
After passing the night together, her ideas of dreaming 'high' struck with his, to settle down one day on a little ranch in his home country along the prairie of Dog Creek...
In San Antone, while preparing for the long journey, Nella transfers her care to Nathan Stark, a good 'connoisseur,' s person with a taste, an ambitious rich businessman who has no interest in being a 'small' man...
Antagonism between Stark and the Allison brothers increased during the hazardous journey...
Clark Gable portrays an honest man tied to a small dream... He fights and loves everything in sight on both sides of the Rio Grande...
Jane Russell appeared among us 'looking surly on a pile of straw' in "The Outlaw." Thirteen years later, she is allowed to enjoy a colorful 'prairie' tub-bath, to be called 'grandma' by the legendary 'King,' to sing: 'I want a tall man...'
Either hero or villain, Robert Ryan manages to come up with excellent performances... He was a very fine actor... Here he plays the heavy double-crossing cattle baron, the man who 'admired' Ben at the climax of the film affirming: 'There goes the man I ever respected. He's what every boy thinks he's going to be when he grows up, and wishes he had been when he's an old man.'
Cameron Mitchell was with Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark in "Garden of Evil." He played "The High Chaparral" in TV. He is fine as Gable's unstable, unbalanced brother...
Juan Garcia is excellent and quiet amusing as Luis, the loyal Mexican friend of Ben... When Nella asked him why he 'loves' Ben so much, he answered: 'Why man loves his home. Why I love my Mexico. I owe Señor Ben my life, Señorita.'
With great scenery, and filmed in the voluptuous rich landscape of Mexico, "The Tall Men" is loaded with action in big scale: Confrontation with the jay-hawkers who demand one dollar for every head before crossing the State line, spectacular 'run wild' stampede of the herd through the canyon, where Red Cloud and his brave Sioux were waiting...
Howard Hawks' monumental "Red River," told the story of the first cattle drive from deep Texas to Abilene, Kansas... Veteran Raoul Walsh superbly handles "The Tall Men" from San Antone, Texas to Mineral City, Montana... Walsh was simple and confident with great sense of humor...
"He's what every boy thinks he's going to be when he grows up and wishes he had been when he's an old man.".......2006-11-08
This collection of Clark Gable's three films for 20th Century Fox is probably more for fans than casual viewers, but there's still much to enjoy here. The big disappointment is that William Wellman's 1935 version of The Call of the Wild is only the cut (by some 14 minutes) wartime reissue version rather than the original. Any resemblance to anything written by Jack London is purely coincidental: it's set in the Yukon, and there's a dog called Buck in it who has to pull a thousand pound weight in one scene for a bet, but that's about it. But this Buck is a huge St Bernard and he's only a bit player in a gold rush romp tailored for Clark Gable - but then at the height of his popularity, audiences would probably have burned the theatres to the ground if he'd played second fiddle to a hound. More famous for Gable and co-star Loretta Young emerging from the snowed-in on-location shoot with an illegitimate child, it's an enjoyable enough yarn even in the abridged reissue cut that now seems to be the only version surviving, although it shamefully throws away Reginald Owen's excellent villain, who deserves a much better exit than he gets here.
Best of the bunch is Soldier of Fortune, a crowd-pleasing potboiler from the days when Technicolor was glorious (okay, it was shot in De Luxe, but the same principle applies) and CinemaScope really was CINEMAScope. There's not much action (the final rescue is laughably easy), but Ernest K. Gann's script is snappy fun, Clark Gable and Susan Hayward play well off each other, Michael Rennie and the colourful supporting cast more than earn their pay, Hong Kong probably never looked better on screen and there's a pleasingly lush romantic score from Hugo Friedhofer. Curious to see director Edward Dmytryk, the one member of the Hollywood Ten to recant (after being appalled at the Party's treatment of his family while he was in prison), turning in such an anti-Communist oater, but he handles it with flair. A deathless classic? Hell, no - but grand entertainment.
The Tall Men has a great opening half hour, but once the snow clears it's pedestrian and overlong all the way despite the combined star power of Clark Gable, Robert Ryan and Jane Russell. The DeLuxe color is problematic throughout - the early scenes and studio footage look wonderful, but out in the wide-open country it tends to make everything on the trail look bleached out and lifeless, the early CinemaScope lenses probably exacerbating the limitations of the system. Still, there's some great dialog and Ryan gets to deliver the definitive description of his co-star - "There goes the only man I ever respected. He's what every boy thinks he's going to be when he grows up and wishes he had been when he's an old man."
Not an essential purchase by any means, but on the whole an entertaining one.

Description
ACADEMY AWARD® winner Charlton Heston (Ben-Hur) heads an international cast as John Thornton in this adaptation of the classic novel by Jack London, famed author of The Sea Wolf and White Fang. Government mail carriers Thornton and Pete Smith (Raimund Harmstorf) take mail and supplies across the brutal Yukon wilderness from Skagway to Dawson City during the 1898 Klondike gold rush. An intelligent German Shepherd, Buck is stolen from his beloved owner in California and sold to John as a sled dog, whose loyalty to his new master is tested when John tries his own hand at prospecting. Praised by Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide for its "striking...scenery," this 1972 version of the family adventure was shot in Norway by Ken Annakin (The Swiss Family Robinson, The Longest Day).
Customer Reviews:
JACK LONDON'S CALL OF THE WILD.......2007-01-12
If you like Jack London's The Call of The Wild, then you'll probably love this internationally cast, (dubbed, save Charlston Heston) and earnest adaptation of the classic fiction with shanghied german shepherd, Buck, sold into the 19th Century Yukon dog trade, where he finds guidance and companionship in dog sled mail rider, John, (Heston). What appears to be a small budget for the film, does remarkably well in capturing the crude and bawdy Yukon gold rush boom towns, and the genuinely wintery and snowy northern wilderness. The film pulls no punches in delivering the violent aspects of the book, (the dog trade is crude and ugly), and animal star, Buck, (as himself, the credits say), would make Lassie proud.
Call of the Wiid (C. Heston).......2006-12-31
I see there have been some negative views on this particular film on which I disagree. Of the many remakes following after, I have to say, this one is the best of the bunch. I guess I'm a Charlton Heston fan die-hard. I simply like the man; think I've seen most of what he has done. In his acting--can't say a bad thing about him.
I've been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD for the longest time, so why haven't I gotten it yet? Guess I'm waiting for the right time. At the moment, the price seems to be right. Perhaps after the New Year, that will be the right time. There are a couple of other movies I'd like to get first.
Call of the Wild is a classic people. I guess I just was brought up right---to appreciate the 'films of yesteryear',---like my mother. She appreciated them too. And she did have a few favorites. And I share some of those favorites, but this one--no. This one's just for me, dispite the it's somewhat an oldie, sort of--in a way, from my point of view.
But in Call of the Wild, it really isn't Heston that's the star, it's the dog who potrays Buck. He's the one who more or less, 'runs away with show/bone', so to speak. Early on in the film, Buck feet bleeds and is made booties until he can take the pace. And after a while Buck prooves he can stand on his own; his love for John is unyielding. Between man & dog, it is a powerful story; what a man won't do for a dog and what a dog won't do for a man. Food for thought.

Jack London's Best, Charlton Heston at his best & Buck rounds it all out to be a perfect 5!.......2006-11-27
This wonderfully naturalistic movie is not for the weak at heart. The story line was taken from Jack London's adventures in his own life experiences. Charlton Heston did an absolutely wonderful job acting out the part, Buck the dog made the entire movie perfect! So this movie more than deserves the 5 stars! This story was taken from the late 1800's during the great gold rush days, hard core times for many men... it's not supposed to be easy on the emotions!
Buck realizes his potential.......2006-06-10
"The Indians in this frozen land tell of a ghost dog which runs at the head of a wolf pack. - They are afraid. For it has more strength than any wolf, more cunning than any dog. No one knows from whence he came or why he stays."
It is summer in California and Buck has it made as the family pet. That is until it is discovered that he was worth his wait in gold or at least $75. He is sold to a broker who will take him to the Klondike where only dogs can do the work usually delegated to horses. There Buck goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild. And so do we.
Screen Play:
Peter Welbeck
Win Wells
Peter Yeldham
True to the book this film holds nothing back. All the highlights of the original story are portrayed and Charlton Heston has the main character, John Thornton down to a tee. And unlike some Disney versions we see Buck's tribute and love for John.
REALLY BAD, BAD, BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-13
This movie is BAD!!!! I HATED IT! A poor dog is ALWAYS dieing in this flim! And SO many dogs that were suffering didn't get to a good home! And poor Buck(The star/dog-German Shepherd)
Buck had to suffer in almost THE WHOLE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT makes Jack London(The Writer) think that people wiil want to read or watch abused and dieing dogs????!!!!!!!! And at the end Buck's owner dies and Buck is left living with the wolves. Sure he's got a family. BUT he still could get shot and killed!
This movie is NOT good for little kids! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!
