lovely and funny.......2006-12-23
I saw this movie many many times. Faye Wong and Tony Leung shows
groundbreaking performance.
They made such a nice couple here. Amazingly funny.
But they have to work on the subtitles, they can do better.
Great movie.......2006-06-19
"A Chinese Odyssey: Pandora's Box" and "A Chinese Odyssey: Cinderella" is a two-parts series movie. Together, it is my favorite Chinese movie of all time. It's a modern and humorous twist on the famous Chinese story of "The Journey West" (also known as "The Monkey King"). In the first part, the Monkey King has been reincarnated as Joker, the leader of a group of bandits...
However, I'm confused by the picture that's shown on this listing. That picture is for "Chinese Odyssey 2002"--clearly a movie NOT made in 1995, with a completely different cast of actors. It stars Tony Leung (a supporting actor in Jet Li's "Hero") and singer/actress Fay Wong. It's not the same movie as described here.
Edit: Looks like Amazon has removed the picture I was talking about, so I've taken a bit of time to scan and upload the front and back covers of this DVD.
This is the best Chinese movie of all times, period!.......2005-10-10
It will laugh you to death, and then move you to life (and tears), and then laugh to death again, and again, and again.
No words can do justice to this movie. Sadly, you have to know Chinese (or even Cantonese) to fully appreciate it. This great movie definitely deserves a 6. It is better than Kung Fu Hustler. Strongly recommend it to anyone who knows or is studying Chinese. Buy it, watch it, NOW!
reiterate: it is a cult classic.......2005-09-16
It is the best of best among Stephen Chow's movies. (Both Part One and Part Two)
It's not only the slapstick style of humor which is sort of typical in his movies, the conversations in the movie are funny and brilliant too.
Again no English subtitle version can do justice to its full wit and flavor, which, I guess, a Chinese version of Woody Allen's movie would be terrible in this respect too.
Like the effect of some childhood rhyme that everyone remembers, to break the ice among a group of Chinese college students, just recite some words from this movie or sing the "Only you" song from it, you can bring the joy that will immediately spread and light up everyone. Guaranteed! It is a cult.
Novel Twist to a Classic!.......2005-01-25
I have seen Chinese Odyssey many times, because it is just so funny! Chinese Odyssey is not really a remake of the Chinese classic, Journey to the West, but it is more of a parody, or a side story based on the Monkey King.
Chinese Odyssey is a period drama set in Ancient China. Here, the Monkey King, Sun Wu Kong (Stephen Chow) is reborn (although he doesn't know this yet because he has yet to find a particular person who can "confirm his identity"), and he's now the leader of a bandit group. Two demons (Spider & "White-Bones" Demon) suddenly appear one day and forcefully "force" the bandits to do their bidding. And from there, the story moves on to include time-travel, romance, friendship and self-discovery.
There are plenty of twists and turns that are really different from the original story, which is good since it doesn't get boring even if you already know the story of the Monkey King. However, a minus is that you'll need to know the story of the Monkey King to be able to appreciate and laugh at some of the jokes aimed at the original story, but if you don't, there are still plenty of comical parts around to keep you laughing. The funny parts may be rather silly at times, but go ahead and laugh at their silliness. Afterall, Stephen Chow is known to be the King of Comedy. :)
At the end of part 1, you'd probably feel like the ending is too abrupt and somewhat of a cliffhanger, but Chinese Odyssey comes in two parts, so you'll need to watch part 2 as well to be able to fully understand the entire movie. If you are into Chinese mythology and culture, give this a try and take the time to enjoy this show!

Customer Reviews:
Stephen Chow was born to play Monkey King.......2006-09-01
I bought both these movies because of the rave reviews from Stephen Chow fans. Their biggest drawback: substandard English subtitles. However, the movies pay you back for sticking with them in spite of this.
The first one was kind of tough -- lots of broad physical humor -- a few brilliant Stephen Chow gags. And the second one is connected to the first one in only a haphazard way.
But you really do need to see both of them.
My interest was immediately captured when I realized the actor playing Monkey King was Stephen Chow. He completely inhabits that part and he's just hilarious. Particularly amusing is his troubled relationship with his teacher Tripitaka -- who gets to brilliantly lampoon religious double-speak.
The second movie is just unforgettable. I would love to see Chow play Monkey King in a real film treatment of the original Journey to the West.
True Classic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-22
I went out and bought this movie alone with part 1. The first time I saw this movie was back in 1995 when my dad rented it on those old laser disc lol. This was an exellent movie, another one of Steven Chow's fabulous crazy movie. As I was watching the movie it got a bit lame and boring during mid way, but the ending made it on my fav movie list. The part where the Monkey King/Joker tries to save the girl he love was really emotional, truely touched my heart. The grand scene in the movie was the part where Monkey King watched as the girl he once loved and his past life were standing on top of a roof. Monkey King took over Joker's body and kissed the girl with the music playing was just beautiful. This movie was probably one of Steven Chow's greatest movie.
Such a great movie, so few reviews!.......2005-10-10
I've already expressed my great appreciation of this movie in another review of part one. I believe part one and two are inseparable, and they are equally good, but quite different in style. While part one is more slapstic and more funny, part two is a more "serious" exploration of identity, time, and love, in a more postmodern sense.
Novel Twist to a Classic!.......2005-01-25
I¡¯ve seen Chinese Odyssey many times, because it¡¯s just so funny! Chinese Odyssey is not really a remake of the Chinese classic, Journey to the West, but it¡¯s more of a parody, or a side story based on the Monkey King.
The second part starts off with Monkey King (Stephen Chow) who is now 500 years back in the past due to a malfunction of Pandora¡¯s Box. Here, he meets with Fairy Zixia (Athena Chu) and got involved romantically with her, although initially, he wasn¡¯t too fond of her. It¡¯s also as funny as part one, and Wukong¡¯s super long-winded and naggy master, Tripitika (Law Kar-Ying), also provides more laughs here. My fave moment in part two has to be the super hilarious ¡°Only You¡± version sang by Tripitika!
There¡¯re plenty of twists and turns that are really different from the original story, which is good since it doesn¡¯t get boring even if you already know the story of the Monkey King. However, a minus is that you¡¯ll need to know the story of the Monkey King to be able to appreciate and laugh at some of the jokes aimed at the original story, but if you don¡¯t, there¡¯re still plenty of comical parts around to keep you laughing. The funny parts may be rather silly at times, but go ahead and laugh at their silliness. Afterall, Stephen Chow is known to be the King of Comedy. :)
Part two has a stronger romance theme than part 1, and the ending is kind of romantic and nice, albeit a little sad. Chinese Odyssey comes in two parts, so you¡¯ll need to watch part 1 as well to be able to fully understand the entire movie. If you¡¯re into Chinese mythology and culture, give this a try and take the time to enjoy this show!
Better than the first..........2005-01-23
The second and finale to the Chinese Odyssey adventure has Joker (Stephen Chow) travelling 500 years back via the Pandora's Box to save his designated beloved, Pak Jingjing (Karen Mok, who has died in part 1). Unfortunately (or fortunately) he meets with the Zixia Fairy (played by a ravishing Athena Chu) who's convinced he's the one for her -- although she's also co-possessed by the spirit of her sister, Lin Qingxia (aka Brigitte Lin, in a satiric nod to "Ashes of Time"). It's funnier (though not wackier) than the first instalment, thanks in no part to Law Kar-Ying, who plays the long-winded master, singing a riotous "Only You"; the plot coheres too, in a way which the first part never manages to. Stephen Chow gets to act much more in this film than does the first. The ending is affecting and apt, and Athena Chu is so sweet as to be irrestible; I'm glad that Stephen Chow gets to kiss her in the end.
