Horse lovers young and old will celebrate this utterly enjoyable and marvelous-looking animated film. The titular stallion runs free in the Cimarron (New Mexico) wilderness until a series of men try to master the proud horse, leading to adventures through a U.S. Cavalry fort, Native American settlements, and a railroad camp. Despite a heavy dose of political correctness and realism (the animals don't talk; we only hear Spirit's internal monologue, voiced by Matt Damon), directors Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook give their hero many only-in-a-movie moments, including an action sequence rivaling any of Rambo's escapes. The stirring mix of 2-D and 3-D animation is absolutely stunning and aptly fueled by composer Hans Zimmer's synthesized score. The film earns one demerit for '80s rocker Bryan Adams's abundant songs--a different singer could have brought more to the film. Rated G but there is some rough treatment of horses shown, so nix the sensitive preschoolers. --Doug Thomas

Spirit: a terrific movie for kids.......2007-05-10
This DVD is a favorite of one our our grandchildren, age 4. He has played it over-and-over in the 3 weeks he has had it.
"My sister likes it".......2007-04-28
Well this movie has
Excellent music
A good plot
And strong characters
A family favorite.......2007-01-31
this movie is a favorite of our entire family, including the music (we bought the CD). The only part that is mildly concerning is where the colonel orders that Spirit be starved for 2 days in order to break his spirit. the colonel hopes that this will show his men that he can control anything. but you are relieved when Spirit not only refuses to be ridden but escapes.
Good messages. nothing offensive. I secretly hope my [...]will pick this when he wants a movie, as I enjoy it so much myself. My husband is also a fan.
Don't let some of the negative comments keep you from seeing this movie!
Great movie.......2007-01-10

Like its fellow PBS series Ken Burns' Jazz, Broadway: The American Musical is an ambitious and absorbing exploration of a unique American art form that has always been best experienced in live performance. Hosted and narrated by Julie Andrews, the six-part, six-hour documentary traces the history of musical theater from its roots in vaudeville, operetta, and minstrel shows, to the dawn of what would become the modern American musical, Show Boat, and on through many changes that seemed to reflect those in American culture itself. Significant creators discussed include Florenz Ziegfeld, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Fosse, and David Merrick, and notable shows (Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Company, Cats, and recent hit Wicked, among others) are analyzed through performance clips and interviews with songwriters, stars, directors, producers, critics, and historians.
The series' most obvious weakness is its use of only brief excerpts of the performances--no song is heard in full. The sheer scope of the series no doubt played a part in that, as well as complicated rights issues, but the core problem is that musical theater has always been a live medium, rarely documented and even more rarely released to the general public. The documentary's producers make do with audio recordings, still photographs, and bits of footage, often in grainy black and white. Thankfully, they resist over-relying on feature-film musicals--which look much better and are sometimes excellent (but more often mediocre) translations--and when used such footage is clearly identified. That makes it all the more frustrating, however, that almost all of the other footage is not identified, because that is what fans are less familiar with and would be most interested in. The 1950s footage looks to be mostly from TV programs such as The Ed Sullivan Show; by the 1960s we have live footage from the Tony Awards (easily identifiable by the backdrops); and the newest shows might have been shot on stage. But early Ethel Merman and other random clips are mysteries, perhaps even to the producers themselves.
Because the series is designed to appeal to a general audience (again like Jazz), a lot of the information won't be new to diehard Broadway fans, but they should be especially pleased by the DVDs' bonus features, which include additional performances and about four more hours of interviews. Stephen Sondheim fans should be fascinated by footage of the composer-lyricist discussing "Someone in a Tree" at the piano, and then running through the song with original cast members of Pacific Overtures, as well as interviews of him talking about his own shows and songs (e.g., listing the songwriters he pastiched in Follies) and reminiscing about mentor Oscar Hammerstein II. Other bonus performances include vaudeville films from the Library of Congress, original-cast television performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "If I Loved You" (from Carousel, unfolding over 12 minutes) and "Some Enchanted Evening" (the reprise version from South Pacific), Rent's Jonathan Larson spoofing Sondheim, and two behind-the-scenes looks at Wicked. --David Horiuchi

Description
Nominated for the 1950 Oscar® for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay, this intense drama about racial hatred pulls no punches. When a white patient in a hospital dies under the care of a black intern (Sidney Poitier), the victim?s racist brother (Richard Widmark) seeks to destroy the doctor?s career. Although the hospital?s idealistic Chief Resident (Stephen McNally) tries to diffuse the escalating tension, the victim?s ex-wife (Linda Darnell) seems to go along with the vengeance-seeker?until she realizes she?s on the wrong side.
Customer Reviews:
No Way Out.......2007-06-26
A tense, hard-hitting social drama that earned an Oscar for Best Screenplay in 1950, Mankiewicz's pioneering film looks squarely at the ramifications of racial hostility while keeping audiences on the edge of their seat. Poitier is magnificent in his debut role, the epitome of coolheadedness and quiet self-regard, while Widmark seethes in a typically explosive role. Mankiewicz builds suspense inside and outside the hospital, and the effect is riveting. Keep an eye out for actors/civil-rights activists Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, playing Luther's brother and sister-in-law in a tandem debut. A potent powder keg of a film that hasn't lost its bite--or its relevance.
Not Film Noir but not bad........2007-05-18
Far too often DVDs of 1940s & 1950s films are labeled as being Film Noir only to help sell the product. Such is the case here. There is no way that "No Way Out" qualifies as "dark cinema," however, it still rates as a very good movie. Controversial when released, some of the drama seems forced at times but the story still entertains. The acting is first rate, especially by Sidney Poitier in his first role (and a starring one at that). Also making their debuts were Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee.
Strong Dialogue & Characterizations Are Still Compelling Today........2007-03-07
"No Way Out" raised the bar in the social conscience film trend a few years after "Crossfire" and "Gentlemen's Agreement" received multiple Oscar nominations for condemning anti-Jewish prejudice in America. This is an assuredly heavy-handed polemic on racism that nevertheless stands the test of time. Luther Brooks (Sidney Poitier) is a young black doctor who has resisted his family's pressure to go into private practice in order to get more experience at the county hospital. One fateful evening, he replaces a sick intern in the prison ward. The intensely racist Biddle Brothers, Ray (Richard Widmark) and Johnny, are brought in for treatment of gun shot wounds to the legs. But Johnny is confused, unresponsive, and clearly suffering from some neurological malady. When he dies during Dr. Brooks' attempt to diagnose him, Ray accuses Brooks of murdering his brother and determines to muster all the racial hatred in his neighborhood to avenge Johnny.
"No Way Out" is sometimes called "film noir", but I take issue with that classification, because this is not even a crime film. And Dr. Brooks, though trapped by unfortunate coincidences and events beyond his control, is too squeaky clean to be a noir protagonist. But I do think that the "noir" elements help "No Way Out" overcome its dated proselytizing and idealized conceptions of Dr. Brooks to remain truly compelling even 60 years after it was made. This was Sidney Poitier's first film, so he was not given billing above the titles in spite of his starring role. Richard Widmark and Linda Darnell are no less the stars of "No Way Out", though. They have the best lines and pivotal scenes. Richard Widmark took the role of racist Ray Biddle reluctantly, as he was leaning toward leading man roles at this point in his career. But Widmark played some of the most memorable villains in cinematic history. Vile, vicious, and supremely manipulative Ray Biddle is no exception. Widmark's ability to convey uncertainty and insecurity with just his eyes is extraordinary.
Linda Darnell plays Johnny Biddle's ex-wife Edie whom Dr. Brooks and the Chief Medical Resident (Stephen McNally) implore to convince Ray to allow an autopsy on his brother. In some sense, this is her film, as Edie is the character who has an arc. She's white trash from the rough Beaver Canal neighborhood who has moved only one step up and out, always in danger of succumbing to her roots. Darnell looks great and spouts some terrific hard-boiled dialogue. The dialogue in "No Way Out", co-written by Lesser Samuels and director Joseph Mankiewicz, vacillates between the hardened, cynical repartee of film noir and loaded speech that the actors struggle to deliver with credibility. There is more than one social ideology represented: The ideas that Edie can overcome her roots and that Ray is a product of his environment join the calls for racial equality. But the dialogue and characterizations of "No Way Out" are so compelling that we don't mind the lack of subtlety in the social message.
The DVD (20th Century Fox 2006): Bonus features include a "Publicity Gallery" of 15 b&w ads for the movie, a "Photo Gallery" of 44 production and publicity stills, 2 short "Fox Movietone News" segments, a theatrical trailer (2 1/2 min), and an audio commentary by film noir historian Eddie Muller. The "Fox Movietone News" segments are coverage of Linda Darnell selling tickets to the New York premiere of the move (30 sec) and of Richard Widmark imprinting his hands in cement outside Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood (20 sec). Eddie Muller leaves more "air" in his commentary than usual so that we don't miss the dialogue that was so controversial in 1950. It's a good commentary that discusses actors, performances, and themes scene-by-scene but is not as packed with information as Muller's commentaries sometimes are. Subtitles are available for the film in English and Spanish.
No Way Out.......2007-01-13
That movie was horrible!!! Nowhere in the reviews did it inform the consumer that it was a film about such hatred!!!!! It should've said something like:
WARNING: The following movie contains ONE of the most offensive words spoken!!! And it was used 26 times!!!
This movie offered no redeeming value whatsoever. I hated it!!!!
No Way Out.......2006-05-30
There's nothing much subtle about NO WAY OUT. Two men, two brothers, are injured by the police while committing a petty crime. The men are transported to the prison ward of the county hospital, where one of the brothers dies while being treated by a young intern. The surviving brother vows mortal vengeance. The doctor needs the approval of a family member to conduct an autopsy to prove his competence and relieve his conscious.
It's a suitably sturdy set-up for what could have been an unspectacular urban melodrama. Trouble is NO WAY OUT is pretty spectacular. For starters, the young doctor is black and the surviving brother is a virulent racist. The talent behind the movie is, to put it mildly, impressive. It begins with the amazing producer Darryl Zanuck, the motor behind such thinking-person movies as The Grapes of Wrath & The Snake Pit, and who seemingly was incapable of making a bad movie. Joseph L. Mankiewicz wrote and directed this movie, and though nominated for an 1951 Oscar for Best Director lost out to himself when he won it for another, much different, classic, All About Eve.
Message movies have a tendency to collapse under their moral weightiness. NO WAY OUT is a movie with a social conscious, but it, for the most part, steers clear of the pulpit. Richard Widmark is perfectly cast as the racist Roy Biddle, who is quite possibly the most loathsome major character in film history. Sidney Poitier, in his first movie, brings just the right blend of intelligence and dignity to his part as the young physician under the gun. Rounding out this unusual triangle is Linda Darnell as the ex-wife of the dead brother.
NO WAY OUT is an uncomfortable movie to watch. Roy Biddle is a vocal racist, and he uses just about every ugly name in the book, loudly and often. There are some scenes of the Beaver Canal group, Biddle's cronies, preparing to attack the black part of town, that are nightmarish. Linda Darnell, the car-hop girl who thought she'd crawled away from Beaver Canal, comes across as an almost tragic figure. This is an intelligent, driving movie, with some scenes that might not be appropriate for young children. The Warner Brothers print is in very good condition, and, as always, the man who can name every actor in history, and has anecdotes to back him up, Eddie Muller's commentary track enhances the experience.

Timeline of Broadway Theatre.......2007-01-08
'Broadway - The Amercian Musical' is a PBS series which tries to tell the story of Broadway in several chapters. More than being a focus on any one show or even time period, this documentary tries to tell the narrative of Broadway.
Julie Andrews hosts and narrates the special, and then we are presented with footage and photos of historical Broadway images, songs, and shows accompanied by interviews with people associated with Broadway. Stephen Sondheim is a notable interviewee who contributes first-hand to the PBS special to tell the story of Broadway. Either way, it works.
The story starts with the 'Ziegfeld Follies' and in Ziegfeld, presents the important role of producer in making Broadway musicals come to life. The 'Ziegfeld Follies' was a series of theatrical reviews which featured songs, dance, and the "Ziegfield girl," an often attractive female employed to be an actor or dancer in the show, establishing this stereotype.
It goes on to chronicle the contributions of the major composers of the Broadway stage; namely, Gershwin, Berlin, Kern, Rodgers, Porter, Bernstein, and Sondheim, among others. It also celebrates the giants of the Broadway stage, like singer Ethel Merman who could hold a note 'forever'. The documentary will often turn its focus to a particular musical or song within in order to illustrate a larger point about the Broadway narrative.
Equally included in the story of Broadway are contemporary musicals, like 'Rent' and 'The Lion King.' It is this continuous, ubiquitous nature of the Broadway tradition that draws me in to this documentary. Watching 'Broadway - The American Musical' is both a fun and educational experience. So, take your pick. You can watch it to learn or you can watch it just to enjoy.
Broadway for Dummies........2006-02-26
...and being a self-professed "dummy" on the American Musical Theater I found this sort of "Broadway History 101" to be at best an entertaining starting point, . I believe director Michael Kantor was handicapped from the start since the whole history of the "Great White Way" encompasses such a huge array of giants and geniuses (Ziegfeld, Jolson, Gershwin...) that at a mere six hours, the documentary feels like being on a bus tour speeding by at 90 miles an hour. That odd feeling is magnified no better than Episode Four: "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'(1943-1960), the single most important gem in the chest. As been noted elsewhere, that golden era of the fabulous "Book Musicals" which produced an unmatchable run of landmark classics like "Oklahoma" and "My Fair Lady" could have alone been given a six hour treatment instead of the rushed, caffeinated hour presented here. Clearly, the episode in Brodway parlance "lays an egg," compromising this projects overall quality.
Still, there is fun to be had here and the filmakers manage to skirt PBS' tendency to turn a giddy subject into a multi-cultural funeral march. Julie Andrews is an exquisite host and I disagree with criticism about the high amount of movie clips used in episodes One through Three. Movies of the 1930's in particular the early "talkies" appropriated so much of Broadway's luster and lore it seems only natural to use them. I also loved the novel use of a song's lyrics by showing the words playfully dancing in an about a sheet of music or a photograph. And best of all, the "talking heads" used here all have something interesting to say with humour and clarity- a key element missing in, say, Ken Burn's "Jazz."
Reasonably good for an incredibly ambitious project.......2005-12-30
Any effort to survey the whole history of the Broadway musical theatre inevitably involves difficult choices of what to include and what to omit, plus the scarcity of earliest material. On the whole, the six-episode documentary works....I don't know how many factual errors were made or how many errors were picked up by other reviewers, but as a major fan of Jimmy Durante and the author of what is the most comprehensive coverage of his career (JIMMY DURANTE: HIS SHOW BUSINESS CAREER, McFarland & Company, 1995, still in print), I was startled to see in the "musical comedies" section of episode two, just before the Jolson segment, that a brief clip from an unidentified movie claimed it showed, left to right, (Lou) Clayton, (Jimmy) Durante, and (Eddie) Jackson. In fact the people were Rudy Vallee, Jimmy Durante, and Cliff ("Ukelele Ike") Edwards, from the Fox film GEORGE WHITE'S SCANDALS (1934), not the famous vaudeville team of Clayton, Jackson and Durante. That team appeared in only one film, ROADHOUSE NIGHTS (Paramount, 1930), together with Helen Morgan. Neither Durante nor his early partners ever appeared in any of George White's theatre productions.
Broadway -The American Musical (PBS Series).......2005-10-14
Several hours of reliving some wonderful "Show" memories, an era
when musicals were tops. Not to be missed by anybody who loves
first rate musicals.
The American Musical: Close To Perfection!.......2005-10-03
I think 'The American Musical' is a sophisticated and -far as I know- the most complete collection of highlights of American Musical Theatre.
Very fine (short) documentaries of 'standardsetting' shows as: 'Show Boat', 'The Lion King' and 'Wicked'.
Within three dvd's it is clearly shown that the American musical is an artform with final results that are close to perfection (European opera is warned!).
As a teacher at the Rotterdam Conservatory (NL) of the Musical Theatre Department I believe this collection should at least be in every library and if possible: in every (theatre)student's dvd-colection!

Perfectly wonderful.......2006-12-20
Enthralling slice of life from a rare perspective. Beautifully filmed & acted. Research is academically strong.
For Those Who Worship the Past.......2006-06-26
This was REALLY only meant for people that like recreating the past. Remember when Oprah attempted life as a woman in the 1700s? Civil War recreationists would like this too. Still, this is completely a niche market. Remember how the Simpsons tried a show like this and the show got cancelled? I was sitting here bored watching a show that implies "Wasn't eighteenth century life so interesting and admirable?" This is 90 minutes on one historian speaking on one historical document. I appreciate this as a contribution to women's studies. But otherwise, yawn!
This does mention spicy topics such as premarital sex and rape allegations. The historian can document health epidemics and property boundaries. Still, I would have like to seen this midwife's life contextualized. For example, how and when did she learn to read and write? I imagine most women in the 1700s did not have those skills. The work suggests that the midwife was not stigmatized for her job and made good money from it, so why didn't she pass this trade on to her own daughters? The work does show her tracking in snow. Still, Maine, to this day, is icy cold. Did she smoke meat? How did her family and other family survive during long, oppressive winters? Each woman and girl here always has her hair covered. I imagine this was in order not to catch or spread lice, but the work never says. When the midwife dies, her children and grandchildren are at her bedside. I heard this was a common practice back then, but the documentary never says. The historian notes that the midwife recorded her tasks and not her feelings. Is this an example of the Protestant work ethic? Again, things should have been fleshed out.
Again, do not view this if you aren't in the targeted niche.

Hell is for Heroes
Steve McQueen delivers a powerful, gripping performance as a defiant loner whose skills as a soldier make him invaluable to his struggling platoon. In the heat of battle during World War II, McQueen and his fellow soldiers find themselves severely outnumbered as they hold off a Nazi advance along the Siegfried Line in France. Using only their ingenuity and bravery, they must bluff the Germans in order to buy some time
and save their lives. Don Siegel directs the explosive action led by an all-star cast, including Bobby Darin, Fess Parker, Harry Guardino, James Coburn, Nick Adams and Bob Newhart. If they can fool the enemy long enough for reinforcements to arrive, victory is theirs.

The Sacrifices Made In War.......2006-06-20
IN HARM'S WAY is a very interesting WWII film directed and produced by Otto Preminger and is worth repeated viewing for its shear entertainment. John Wayne's subtle yet forceful performance just demonstrates the wide range of his acting abilities. We see John Wayne the actor and consummate professional at work here. He gave an exceptional performance in this film that others can learn from. The whole cast seems in awe of him. Even the usual flamboyant Kirk Douglas seems to have turned it down a notch giving an impressive performance as well. The construction of the characters and their dialogue was well thought out. It seems more powerful today than when it was first released. Its excellent cast includes: Patricia Neal, Tom Tryon, Burgess Meredith, Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Hugh O'Brian, Paula Prentiss, Brandon de Wilde, Patrick O'Neal, Franchot Tone, Carroll O'Connor, George Kennedy, Slim Pickens, Bruce Cabot, Larry Hagman, Barbara Bouchet, Stanley Holloway, Jill Haworth and James Mitchum. Jerry Goldsmith composed one of his most introverted scores, which goes against convention for a war film yet it works. This score is an early sign of the great innovative abilities of Jerry Goldsmith. Preminger being the craftsman that he was even helped construct the models of the destroyers and cruisers. Cinematographer, Loyal Griggs received an academy award nomination for his stark black & white images. This is a well-constructed film on all levels.
HELL IS FOR HEROES so we are told. Was there ever a man more misunderstood? Steve McQueen plays a soldier who lives only for the thrill of combat. His character is cold and frightening and borders on the psychotic. He's a sociopath who carves up German soldiers with a butcher knife. After the war there is no going back for him. I saw this when I was a kid. I saw a lot of war movies in the theatre back then but this was the first one that really scared me. It gave me a sick feeling inside of how real war must be like. The scene with the bayonets and landmines left an impact on me for a long time after. Everyone in this film gave realistic performances but I remember how Steve McQueen's character seemed really demented. Yet despite the obvious psychological makeup of McQueen is there still a human being hidden deep within him. What is a hero? Don Siegel directed this tough and mean film and asks this profound question. Cinematographer Harold Lipstein's photography brings stark realism to this film. Composer Leonard Rosenman's score is very reminiscent of his brilliant work for the very popular W.W.II television series "Combat!" which ran for 5 years. This film also boasted a brilliant cast. Bobby Darin, James Coburn, Fess Parker, L.Q. Jones, Nick Adams, Harry Guardino, Mike Kellin and Bob Newhart are all featured. This is an underrated classic.
Perhaps the best of these films is THE BRIDGES AT TOKO-RI. The principal characters are William Holden as Lt. Harry Brubaker USNR, Grace Kelly as his wife Nancy, Fredric March as Rear Admiral George Tarrant, Mickey Rooney as Mike Forney a helicopter rescue pilot and Charles McGraw as Commander Wayne Lee leader of the jet fighter group. THE BRIDGES AT TOKO-RI is a very moving film. The sacrifices that some are called upon to make are often gone untold. This film reminds us of those sacrifices in brilliant almost unsettling color images. When you see William Holden's final scene and then think back to a prior scene of Holden with his family, the message hits home. We see Fredric March on the bridge of the aircraft carrier reflect on the news of Holden. March unknown to Holden kept a watchful eye on him as if he were his own son. When the ultimate sacrifice is made, men in command must stand strong, yet inwardly mourn the loss only to themselves. The sacrifice has not gone unrecognized. It is a simple but powerful message.

Product Description
Between 1845 and 1893, the American West was lost and won - wound with ribbons of iron and wire and brought within the dominion of the United States - while, along the way, the lives of hundreds of thousands of Native Americans were violently disrupted and all but destroyed. This mesmerizing six-hour documentary series from acclaimed filmmaker Ric Burns (The Civil War, Coney Island, New York), chronicles the final astonishing decades of the American frontier from the time of the Gold Rush until after the last gasp of the Indian wars at Wounded Knee.
Customer Reviews:
The Most Moving Documentary I've Ever Seen.......2007-06-13
As movies and TV (except HBO) become so stupid and banal as to be unwatchable, I find myself watching more and more documentaries, and this is the best I've ever seen.
Unlike Ric Burns "The West" (which covers everything from the Conquistidors in Mexico to the Indians of the Northwest), this focuses almost entirely on the unending battle for the great plains between native americans and the whites. The photography, the narration, the actors readings, and especially the music are first rate, all lending to a sense of inevitable tragedy.
To me this seemed very balanced in presenting both sides of the story. It documents the breaking of treaties and the atrocities committed by Indians every bit as much as those committed by whites. There are several very graphic photos of white men mutilated by Indians. (This is NOT for children.)
I'm at a loss to understand the previous reviews saying this portrays "all white Christian men" as evil and all Indians as victims. Over an hour is dedicated to just the Battle of the Little Big Horn. How does that portray Indians as helpless victims?
The fact that these reviewers feel this is an attack on all white Christian men tells us much more about those reviewers than it does about this incredibly moving documentary.
Powerful and moving documentary.......2007-04-27
I don't know what ax the previous two reviewers had to grind. The documentary gives balanced views from both sides of a very complex story. There are amazing images. This is one of the best documentary series ever produced. I am a college professor and I regularly show episodes to my Introduction to America Studies class. The students say it teaches them things they never learned in American history classes before.
SOME FICTION, SOME FANTASY, SOME GREAT PARTS.......2007-02-14
WELL, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS JUNK. MY WIFE IS A DESCENDANT OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS. SO I AM BIASED TOWARDS THE PROTECTION OF MINORITIES. BUT, THAT BEING SAID. I WANT THE TRUTH. I WANT A BALANCED, HONEST, ACCURATE DOCUMENTARY TO WATCH. I DON'T WANT SOME OF THE FACTS WHILE IGNORING MOST OF THE IMPORTANT FACTS. THIS IS NOT AN HONEST PRODUCTION. SHAME ON YOU MR DISHONESTY FOR CREATING THIS KIND OF JUNK. THAT BEING SAID, THERE IS SOME REALY GOOD INFORMATION PRESENTED HERE. I MEAN SOME REALLY INTERESTING AND THOUGHT PROVOKING MOMENTS. BUT, WHEN THEY ATTEMPT TO BLAME ALL CHRISTIANS FOR THE GENOCIDE OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS THEY LOOSE A LOT OF CREDIBILITY. BE FORWARNED, THIS PRODUCTION IS A GREAT INSULT TO ALL CHRISTIANS. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT THE RESPONSE WOULD BE IF THEY ATTEMPTED TO INSULT ALL MUSLIMS BECAUSE OF THOSE WHO PERPETRATED THE 911 TERRORISM AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. WELL, I HAVE TRAVELED TO TURKEY. THERE ARE A LOT OF VERY KIND HEARTED AND GENEROUS MUSLIMS IN THE WORLD WHO WANT NOTHING BUT TO BE LEFT ALONE SO THEY CAN ENJOY THEIR FAMILIES, FRIENDS AND LIFE IN GENERAL. WATCH 500 NATIONS AND KEN BURN'S PRESENTS THE WEST WITH THIS PRODUCTION. THEN YOU WILL GET A GOOD OVERVIEW.
One Star Is Too Many.......2007-02-06
One sided "politically correct" view that all white men (particularly Christian white men) are evil, greedy, murderous slugs. Whereas, all native Americans are noble, nurturing victims.
The Way West is not so much a "documentary" as it is a diatribe against Western Culture. Watch it for yourself and decide. But while you do may I say suggest you think about the fact that all men are created equal which not only relates to the rule of law but also in our nature as well. In short, all of us are capable of good and bad.
On a completely different note, the documentary makes much ado about property rights. Specifically, that the "White Man" because of his "Judeo Christian "creation legend"" believes in "conguering the land" and private property rights. While the "native American" (itself a misnomer ) believed that the earth is our "mother" and it belongs to all. I find this ironic because this documentaries primary argument is that the White Man stole the Indian's land but how could that be if the Indian did not own the land. Taking this point one step further it could be argued that the Native American's viewpoint is that that they "own" all the land that they ever passed through.
big picture.......2007-01-05
A riveting overview of the western experience. Especially toppy on the Indian wars on the Great Plains.

One of the worst movies ever made.......2007-05-19
My mom bought this movie for my brother and me when we were in high school. It featured Hollywood Native American favorite Graham Greene, so she figured we might like it. What we got were some of the best laughs ever elicited from a bad movie. The coming of age ceremony was the best, and to this day my brother and I still make fun of the line, "With the blessings of the spirits, you are now a man." Maybe kids 8 and under haven't fully developed a sense of irony and sarcasm to realize what a gem of a bad movie this truly is, but anyone in their teenage years will appreciate it for a true stinker to be ridiculed after the manner of Battlefield Earth.
teaches many good values.......2006-11-11
My 10 and 8 year old sons really enjoyed it, as did I. It teaches many good values, such as forgiveness, loyalty, courage, respect. In reference to guns, the wise uncle explains that guns are tools and to be respected, which I found refreshing in this age of either irrational fear of guns or extreme gun violence in movies.
It was a little over-the-top on indian religion. It showed a deer coming after the indian boy prayed to its spirit and allowing itself to be killed for food. As a Christian parent I had the opportunity to explain differences in beliefs and that I imagine that indians have to hunt their food the same as everyone else.
A fine adventure for older boys, young adults.......2005-01-10
Jamie's parents died in a car accident and, under a trust fund, he has grown up at a fine boarding school. He has thrived there, and is both successful and well-liked. But, the trust fund is depleted, and Jamie most go West to live with his Uncle Angus, a fur-trapper living in the wilderness of Northwestern Canada. Thus begins a great adventure, featuring themes of coming-of-age, cultural adaptation, tolerance and understanding of diversity, survival through cooperation, friendship, and accepting responsibility. Many of these themes emerge when Jamie befriends Awassis, a Native American teen who had tried living the White Man's society in Eastern Canada. Together, they break some rules, go on a trip together that almost costs them their lives, find a historical treasure, and grow up.
The acting is good, the scenery is harshly beautiful, the story is good, and there is enough complexity to attract and keep viewers' interest. The first quarter of the movie is a bit slow-paced, but the rest of the film makes the waiting worth it.
I Want the Video.......2004-10-01
Lost in the Barrens is my favorite book of all time. I am a sixth grade teacher in Idaho and I read Lost in the Barrens to every class. They all love it and remember the story for years. I would love to purchase the video but it has a different title. Please help me if you can.

lost in the barrens.......2004-09-13
Hi,i gave this 5 stars, because it is a good interesting movie that doesent use swear words or have violence,so what does it then have? answer it has a very interesting plot ,and you might just get a warm fuzzy happy feeling, one thing is for shure by the time the adventure is over you will be thankfull to have a warm house to be in ,i always snuggle in a cozy quilt when i watch it,i also am proud of the movie because it was based in canada, and made in Canada,as i also live in canada,i enjoyed it because in canada we don't make alot of movies. The movie has a good plot, and is very educational and was made from a classic novel, and when i went to school we even got to watch it in english class ,it also shows a lot of pretty canadian wilderness. the story takes place in the 1940's or so ,in the most northern part of manitoba canada ,which we call the barren's, because there is a lot of tundra(flat land with yellow dead grass) and tree's for shelter are very few ,and in the winter it get's deadly cold at times it could get -40 degree's celcious and you would die if you were lost in the barrens in the winter without survival skills in very cold weather, and also with very few tree's to find to make shelter .in the beginning of this movie the young boy(jamie) lives in toronto in a expensive upper class school that also is his home because he had no parents because they died in a car crash, when he was a young boy,and when he is a teenager his money his parents left him to pay to live in the fancy school runs out,so he has no choice but to go live with his only remaining relitive, which is his uncle that lives in manitoba, which he has never met before, in the remote wilderness and the uncle makes a living selling animal fur and makes canoe's and doesent socilize with any outside public his only friends before his nephue arived were the local native's, so once the boy arives at his uncles cabin,he is introduced to a teenaged native boy his same age, called awosis which is the son of the uncles good native friend, the young native boy at first despises jamie but they have to get over thier stubborness when they get lost up river and seperated from the rest of thier group while they were suposed to be waiting for the rest of the hunting party that had to go further into the barrens to find deer to eat for the winter, but end up sneeking away from thier camp to explore the river wilderness but end up in big trrouble when they loose thier canoe and get lost in the barrens with few provisions, and almost starve and freeze to death, and it just keeps getting more interesting from that point which i will leave to you to watch so i dont give away the ending, this movie shows no violence and is educational and exciting,it's a great family movie for kids or grown up's also,it was made onto dvd by some kind of family oriented company. the dvd is not to expensive ,so if like wilderness adventures give this movie a try what have you got to loose, i am almost certain you will love it as much as i did and i still watch it all of the time. the story is by farley mowit.

Lacked Something.......2004-04-20
I rented this movie at the video store because nothing else looked good. Well this movie had more ups and downs than any movie I have watched in recent history. I imagine the book must be better.
Acting: Some actors performed brilliantly. Others were shockingly bad!
Filming: Some scenes were shot brilliantly. Other scenes were shockingly bad!
And so would go the rest of my review were I to continue.
To make a long review short. Do what I did, if you don't have anything else to watch, buy, or rent, check this movie out. Otherwise, look elsewhere for your entertainment. And one more thing: If you don't like watching young boys spewing foul language every few seconds - I also suggest you pass on this flick.

THIS WAS KINDA UNCALLED FOR.......2004-02-17
A GROUP OF Y0UNG BOYS FROM WEST OAKLAND FEUD WITH A TEENAGE DRUG DEALER. NOT AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE, BUT AT LEAST IT IS WELL INTENDED. BUT, THE FILMAKERS MUST NOT TAKE THIS MOVIE THAT SERIOUSLY, BEING THAT THE CAST ISN'T EVEN LISTED ON THE COVER! I GUESS IT SHOULD APPEAL TO MOST FANS OF GANGSTA MOVIES.
'Way Past Cool' is too hard for Hollywood.......2004-01-31
Submitted by Donald Evans:
Way Past Cool, based on West Oakland author Jess Mowry's scarifying collection of tales from the 'hood. Predictably, this adaptation's been finessed a little. It's been gentled by narration, and it's hardly as harrowing as the book, possibly because the film was shepherded into production by Milos Forman and Norman Lear (who was executive producer of The Jeffersons, cited here ironically). The slant of Adam Davidson's direction: to see Mowry's apprentice gangstas as The Little Rascals - only with drive by shootings. This odd metaphor mostly works, especially thanks to Jonathan Roger Neal's acting as Gordon, the Spanky of the gang.
"If you don't take the street, you have to take the alley," says the narrator of his life in the Oakland ghetto. We meet the five kids in a gang called The Friends. Though Gordon's the largest and most quarrelsome, the young shaman, Lyon (Wes Charles, Jr.), is the one we follow. Lyon's good enough with his hands to remove a bullet or perform magic tricks. A driveby shooting interrupts The Friends' day, and then the film cuts away to follow the reason for the shooting. It was the scheme of the powerdrunk shakedown artist Deek (Wayne Collins) who likes to take Polaroid photographs of his victims after he kills them. We contrast The Friends' problems with that of Deek's bodyguard, Ty (Terence Williams, Jr.) who is pressured by his boss's increasing viciousness. Ty's also lured into a more peaceful life by his girlfriend Markita (Luchisa Evans). Deek's latest hustle is to pit a rival babygang The Crew against The Friends, hoping they'll kill each other and make more room for him. Exploited and threatened by Deek, The Friends are in the position of the mice trying to bell the cat.
Director Adam Davidson won the Oscar for 1990's short film Lunch Date. He's discovered a lot of virgin locations - the refineries, the freeway frontage roads, the huge white cranes that inspired George Lucas to make the tenstory walkingtanks in The Empire Strikes Back. Even if softened by narration, as it stands, Way Past Cool is still too intense a film for Hollywood. It features kids not quite 13 carrying pistols and drinking 40 ouncers - one, the Jamaican kid Curtis, played by Partap Khalsa, is seen pouring sugar into his bottle of Olde English 800 to sweeten it. Watching moments like these, you can just imagine the conversations of moviebusiness executives fretting over the problem of whether showing something means endorsing it ... as if it weren't clear that children placed in hopeless life or death situations wasn't a tragedy, or that it wasn't our tragedy, in fact, as well as our responsibility.

Today's Little Rascals.......2004-01-25
Submitted by Phyllis:
Imagine Spanky, Alfalfa and the rest of the Little Rascals waving guns, sucking down 40s of malt liquor and using language that would set Miss Crabtree's hair on fire: That's the unsettling tone Adam Davidson brings to his adaptation of Jess Mowry's award-winning 1994 novel about a group of seventh graders growing up too fast on the mean streets of Oakland. Pudgy Gordon (Jonathan Roger Neal), goofy twins Ric and Rac (D'andre and D'esmond Jenkin), sensitive rasta-boy Curtis (Partap Khalsa) and wise-beyond-his-years Lyon (Wes Charles Jr.) have grown up watching each other's backs in a neighborhood where walking to school can be a life-or-death adventure. On the first day of class, they're the targets of a drive-by shooting Gordon suspects was ordered by 16-year-old Deek (Wayne Collins), an ambitious drug dealer who's trying to recruit "The Friends," as the boys call themselves, to push dope. Gordon knows through the grapevine that baby-faced sociopath Deek has made the same offer to a rival group of kids, "The Crew," and suspects that Deek is trying to goad them into killing each other, eliminating potential competition. Deek never goes anywhere without his bodyguard, Ty (Terrance Williams), who just wants out; he doesn't have the stomach for murder and wants to get back together with his responsible junior-high sweetheart, Markita (Luchisha Evans), and keep his little brother, Danny (Kareem Woods), from repeating his mistakes. Gordon and The Crew's leader, Wesley (Dejuan D. Turrentine), decide to join forces to solve the Deek problem, and Danny tags along with his own agenda - making sure that Ty doesn't get hurt. The shocker isn't so much that the film is about is 12-year-olds with handguns as it is that they can be such kids, laughing at Our Gang shorts on TV and worrying that mom will know they've been jumping on the couch. They're capable of plotting like military strategists to defend their turf, yet their story isn't so much about coming of age as trying not to. Gordon, Wesley and the others don't want to grow up and be like Deek. They know "you don't get to be 16 by being a fool," but they've seen enough of growing up to know they should hold onto the threads of childhood. Davidson's young cast is remarkable, engaging and guilelessly funny without being so cute that their calculated actions ring false.
Land of the lost boys.......2004-01-21
Based on the 1993 novel by Jess Mowry (who co-adapted his own work) and executive produced by Norman Lear and Milos Forman in 1997, Way Past Cool should now be remembered as one of the more prominent examples of the African-American urban-crime genre that followed John Singleton's seminal Boyz N the Hood. For reasons that aren't entirely clear... along with some that are... the film hasn't seen release until now. One could assume that the sight of 12-year-old gangstas swearing a blue streak, slugging malt liquor, packing heat and blowing away each other like a post-modern Little Rascals in a nightmare landscape (a vision made all too clear when one young thug adds sugar to his beer while watching the old serial on TV) was simply too much for Hollywood studio execs. Way Past Cool is also problematic on less controversial levels. The acting is uneven, the narrative is hard to follow. and the sometimes almost folksy soundtrack is jarringly inappropriate at times (though maybe intentionally so) issues which might be the fault of a first-time director. The film, however, is carried along by effectively moody cinematography that adds a dreamlike edge to its disturbing atmosphere. Despite some problems, Way Past Cool is still far better than the exploitation-driven, video premiere fare that populates the genre. Well worth seeing.
