A sizable hit with both teen audiences and sports-themed movie enthusiasts, 1984's The Karate Kid had the right combination of heart and action to spawn three sequels of varying quality between 1986 and 1994; all four features have been packaged together in this three-disc set. Though plot elements varied from film to film, the core story (and the series' greatest strength) remained the same--the relationship between a wise Japanese martial arts teacher (skillfully underplayed by comedian Pat Morita) and his young American student (Ralph Macchio in the first three films, and future Oscar winner Hilary Swank in the final entry, The Next Karate Kid). The first of the Morita/Macchio matchups remains the best of the four features, with excellent performances from both leads and director John G. Avildsen (who also handled Rocky and the first two Kid sequels) expertly balancing the emotional moments with the pure excitement of the martial arts tournament that serves as its finale.

The subsequent sequels with Macchio seemed pulpier (especially The Karate Kid, Part II, with its rekindled wartime romance subplot), and the inevitable come-from-behind competitions lacking the impact of the original; 1994's The Next Karate Kid (directed by Christopher Cain) put a slight spin on the formula by replacing Macchio with belligerent teen Swank, but it too seems like a retread of the first film. Still, the messages inherent to each film--finding one's inner strength, trusting your heart--should ring true to new generations of younger viewers. Fans may find the Collection light on supplemental features--while all four films are presented in anamorphic widescreen format, only the original (which was previously released in pan-and-scan only) offers commentary by Avildsen, Macchio and Morita and several making-of featurettes; the three sequels, packed into two discs, offer no extras. --Paul Gaita

if you have never seen karate kid, part of your life is missing. just kidding. that's going a little far, but it is a a great set. the third wasn't as good as the first two though. the 4th, with hilary, is good, too.

In my opinion all the Karate Kid DVD Movies are filled with action and entertainment. I like the actor Ralph Macchio. Would recommend this series to anyone who appreciates Martial Arts.

Karate Kid is one of those movies that is iconic which means you know the film by heart and phases from the film that become apart of everyday vocabulary in our culture and all people, of different walks of life can relate to it , it's classic and timeless that's what karate kid is . before karate kid there was kung fu it was nice but always distant somehow. then came karate kid this film did'nt just blow open the doors it kick them open to show a different society and method we could learn from but also relate to in this film, the good and bad to learn lessons from them. i just loved this film for being just straight foward in it's approach of teaching positive lessons to kids about life because as we all know life is'nt a bed of roses or whatever saying you use, it's tough. Daniel( Ralph Macchio ) and His Teacher ( Pat Morita ) are positive role models and have been since it's release in 1984. Do Yourself a Favor And Pick Up A Copy Of This Trilogy Of Films.

This Set is Wonderful in picture and in sound and are as good if not better than when they were released in the theaters and on video for the first time in 84 and 94 and this marks the first time the first karate kid has been released in widescreen. yeppy daniel son!

Whatever your style of karate, a set of DVDs from Master Kanazawa is a 'must have' item! However, the world-class instruction is poorly let down by the production quality.

The disks are cheaply burned DVD-Rs rather than pressed from a factiory produced glass master. This meant that some portions of my set were unviewable (for me), or jumped and stuttered at best. The sound quality is poor and Kancho's speech is continually 'clipping'.

I feel that Rising Sun Productions has let down Master Kanazawa and his tream badly, making it difficult for the dedicated student to get the maximum from the content provided, which is why I knocked two stars off an otherwise 5-star set.

I'm also suspicious of the positive reviews from 'Colin of Canada' for all the Rising Sun Productions DVDs. He couldn't possibly work for .. no . couldn't be could it?

4 - star content, 1 - star production quality........2005-10-15

This DVD set is a must-have for any Shotokan Karate practitioner. From basic punches and kicking techniques to advanced kata and kumite, these DVDs cover almost everything there is to know about traditional karate-do.

Having said that, the production quality and content are not perfect:

1) Sound quality is poor.

2) Menu system (scene selection) is poorly done.

3) Sensei Kanazawa goes into great detail while explaining karate techniques, but he does so in English with a thick Japanese accent which is often very hard to understand. Subtitles would be an invaluable asset, but they are not available on these DVDs.

4) Not all Shotokan Kata are included. I recommend getting Kanazawa's tape "All 26 Shotokan Karate Kata" in addition to this set.

Overall, 4 stars for content, 1 star for production quality.

As one of the premier Shotokan karate exponents of the 20th century Hirokazu Kanazawa deserved the support of a professional production company to make this series. What he got, clearly, was incompetent amateurs, hell bent on the biggest profit for the smallest possible investment-and it shows. What a sad and very public end to an otherwise illustrious!

KARATE "THE ART OF EMPTY HAND FIGHTING" is a 2 DVD SET Starring Hidetaka Nishiyama,Masatoshi Nakayama plus the other JKA greats . Shot in 1955 the first 30 minutes is a two part documentary film called KARATE "The ART OF EMPTY HAND FIGHTING" with outstanding narration and sound effects. This rare footage has been seen before but not in its entireity with all the sound effects narration and film footage put together. Then there is a personal interview done in 2001 with Hidetaka Nishiyama in his office in Los Angeles in which he tells of the evolution of the JKA describing the Instructor's training program that trained some of the very best ever of the Japanese karate sensei's that went on to propogate the JKA world wide plus his own personal training in the early years.

He also talks in length about Funakoshi Sensei and his role in the development of Shotokan. He was there and he knows the true story like no one before or after him. You will learn so much and so many unanswered questions will finally be answered for you. It is amazing and totally enlightening. This is the defining work of Hidetaka Nishiyama and the evolution of the JKA.

As a bonus you will see more rare footage of Sensei Nishiyama teraching in his Los Angeles and one of the earliest demonstartions ever for a camera of traditional JKA shotokan Karate by Takayuki Mikami shot inn 1955.

Terrible sound quality.......2006-08-22

'Karate the Art of Empty Hand Fighting' was the first karate book I ever purchased, when I began my training back in 1975. It is one of the best. However, I'd never (yet) had the pleasure of meeting Sensie Nishiyama, so I purchased the DVD set to hear what he had to say.

I only wish I could hear what he had to say, but the sound quality is so poor that the traffic outside Sensie's LA dojo was more audible than him. Shame on you Rising Sun, as the picture quality was excellent. I can only assume that they never monitored the sound during the shoot. If they did, the sound director needs firing. A diamond fell into their lap, and they dropped it.

I wouldn't purchase another Rising Sun product based on this.

Karate: The Art of Empty Hand Fighting.......2005-09-29

The second disc in this set is great in it's place. I used to watch this on 16mm film. Even tho the quality has not been re-mastered or edited properly.
The first disc is a pathetic use of someone's bad video footage and shows no respect to Nishiyama or his impact on modern Karate.
There seems to be an influx of showing truly awful old film footage and classifying it as historical archives.
Even tho we live in a digital world, even the packaging and production are truly terrible...one wonders who is really putting these things together.
The only truly well-done Video Tapes on Karate seem to be the products of TSUNAMI.

Rising Sun, Mastersline and Yamazato productions should be ashamed of themselves.
I will never purchase another product from any of them. But I will certainly look at other TSUNAMI product with high expectation.

Excellent collector's item and thorough interview!!.......2005-06-01

Simply Put, this is a must have. The interview with Nishiyama Sensei is definitive, clear, and the questions posed puts an end to speculation about his history in karate. Also, the production value of the 2 dvd's enclosed is very high. The video quality is crisp, the old 1950's JKA footage is preserved and the dojo training at Nishiyama Sensei's hombu dojo is great to watch. ALL AAKF/ITKF MEMBERS SHOULD BUY THIS DVD.

This system is wonderful. Not only are the DVDs great, but the lessons are easy to follow. The system itself works and has given me the confidence in myself that I need living in a big city. As a female, I feel capable of defending myself because of Marc Bochner and Kuntao Jiu Jitsu. These DVDs are also great when I use them with the KJJ manual that I bought as well. The combination of the two makes for easy learning, and it covers everything from simple hammerfists to great techniques used for overkill. Grappling and combinations have always made me nervous, but I can do them now with the aid of these DVDs and the book! I recommend these to anyone who wants to learn how to successfully defend themselves and/or further their martial art development and knowledge! Kudos Soke-Dai.
