Editorial Review:
Description
BANG is the chilling story of four police officers who find themselves captured and tormented in an abandoned garage by three masked gang members who have vowed to execute one of the cops every hour for reasons unknown. As they contemplate the dreaded fate awaiting them each of the four cops reminisces about an incident that he was involved in that he believes may have landed him in the fatal predicament with the three mysterious gangsters. BANG is a mixture of dark humor, explosive action and mystery and stars King Jeff, Roy Jackson, Gorio and Brian Lanigan as the four unfortunate cops and El Timo, Eddie Lacy and Charlie Hollins, Jr. as their three cold-blooded antagonists. Written and directed by King Jeff in a fast, fresh and unique style, BANG will keep you on the edge of your seats with its interesting plot and fine cast.

This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. --Rochelle O'Gorman

THE ITEM ARRIVED IN GREAT CONDITION ALTHOUGH SLOW IN DELIVERY. CANNOT SEE THE FILM I ORDERED BECAUSE IT IS FOR REGION 1 AND I NEED FILMS FOR REGION 2. REALISED WHEN I PUT THE DVD ON. MY MISTAKE. RATED 5 STARS BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT WAS PACKED.

4 out of 5 stars Lotsa Fun.......2007-06-27

The music is great -- I enjoyed singing along. There are a lot of laughs and some clever surprises. Maybe a bit overdone in spots (emphasis on the fact that the kids weren't in school because they didn't want to be, and the "goblin" character with the silly nose), but all in all it kept my attention from beginning to end. I look forward to watching it again.

5 out of 5 stars Charming Musical with Humor and Fun........2007-06-25

Like "Mary Poppins". A charming story of adventure, imagination, and warmth. England, a 1920's race-car, charming children, their inventor father, a pretty woman, romance, an evil baron ruler of Vulgaria, a castle, a peasant village, songs and dancing, humor, and fun.

Good songs by the same Sherman brothers who wrote the songs of "Mary Poppins". Same dance choreographer from "Mary Poppins". Based on the novel by Ian Fleming, a real life secret agent in World War II. Movie script by Ronald Dahl, who wrote "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". Dick Van Dyke, and an all-star cast, though many unknowns. A very creative real-life inventor created the interesting inventions. A lot of bright, talented, people came together for this film. Too bad they can't make them like this anymore.

I bought this Special Edition for the second disc with the behind-the-scenes. An interesting look at the real life inventor behind the interesting inventions. I also enjoyed the interview with Dick Van Dyke.

I also bought the other full-screen edition, for the better, natural picture quality. It is not a big difference. Full-screen edition does not have the behind-the-scenes.

The producer of James Bond films gave the Disney team a free hand, but could not restrain himself from interjecting one risque' singing scene with a scantily clad baroness. However, the focus of the scene is humor and a good song. It is a great duet, with some great melodramatic acting. Though the scene would have been better with a modestly dressed baroness.
The rest of the film is a Disney style.

4 out of 5 stars Ended too soon........2007-06-28

The end of the series left me wanting more and these helped but I still would like to see more - The Center has so much potential to go in different directions that they could easily do a season on Angelo - get more into Broots and his background/history.

3 out of 5 stars Awesome they finally came out on DVD, still left without enough answers!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-27

They were pretty good, basically long episodes. They were definetely worth buying and I would strongly recommend them to any Jarod fan. I loved them but was disapointed with the lack of revealed secrets. Hopefully they will bring back either more movies or a second series run would be even better, I wont hold my breath.

4 out of 5 stars Pretender Movies.......2007-06-12

It is great to finally have the whole Pretender series on video, however I still wish they could have finished up series, even with another movie or two.

4 out of 5 stars Sorry to say Goodbye.......2007-06-11

I purchased these because I had already watched the entire CD collection of the series and hoped for some closure. I read reviews that hinted at "don't bother", but I am glad that I listened to my own counsel.

It's true that the conclusion invites more episodes, and that's too bad, but I did learn some of the answers to my questions. And I laughed and cried. So all in all it was worth the money.

As a screenwriter, Shane Black made millions of dollars from screenplays for the big-budget action movies Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, among others. With his directing debut Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Black mocks and undercuts every cliche he once helped to invent. While fleeing from the cops, small time hood Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr., Wonder Boys) stumbles into an acting audition--and does so well he gets taken to Hollywood, where--pursuing a girl he loved in high school (foxy Michelle Monaghan, North Country)--he gets caught up in twisty murder mystery. His only chance of getting out alive is a private detective named Gay Perry (Val Kilmer, Wonderland, The Doors), who sidelights as a consultant for movies. No plot turn goes untweaked by Black's clever, witty script, and Downey, Kilmer, and Monaghan clearly have a ball playing their screwball variations on action movie stereotypes. There's nothing profound about Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, but it brings back wicked mischief to a genre that all often takes itself too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

Description

In Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, a breezy take on writer-director Shane Black's trademark buddy action/comedy oeuvre, a petty thief (Robert Downey Jr.) is brought to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, along with his high school dream girl (Michelle Monaghan) and a detective (Val Kilmer) who has been training him for his upcoming role.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this movie! Witty dialogue, wild action and a fun ride for movie-lovers!.......2007-06-18

Writer Shane Black has always crafted films that may be a little too quirky and over-the-top for the mass audience, but I love his love for film and talent for dialogue which are on display in his directorial debut.

After a botched robbery, the RDJ character stumbles into a film audition, which leads to an LA oddessey. In the course of it, bullets, dead bodies and a severed finger start to pile up, as the case turns into a cheap detective novel - not unlike the kind the characters riff about in the movie.

I found "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" to be a real treat for cinema-philes who like smart characters and a bit of the "breaking the fourth wall" feel. Admittedly, the plot is a little loose, and really only exists to facilitate the action (Noires sometimes have plot issues - see The Big Sleep & Night Moves for examples - so many twists). The movie takes itself just seriously enough to be wild but coherent. The "LA flare" and the fact that the actors seem to be having so much fun made this a fun view for me. RDJ & Val Kilmer (who steals a few scenes of his own) are great together, and Michelle Monaghan was witty, fun and nice to look at. This is the kind of fun film experience I enjoy & miss in the garbage they churn out in Hollywood now - really dug it.

1 out of 5 stars We Didn't Like It!.......2007-06-05

Wow! If they had left the "F" word out of this movie, there wouldn't have been much dialog!!!! Could have been great, but our poor ears were cringing! Not even funny. What a disappointment. There are a lot better comedies out there.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise........2007-05-12

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Shane Black, 2005)

I sometimes forget that under Robert Downey, Jr.'s deeply troubled exterior lies a world-class actor. Then I see one of his good movies, and the late eighties come flooding back. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, despite its awkward title (and how strange is it that this is the sixth movie to carry that title?), is definitely one of those.

Downey plays Harry Lockhart, a small-time crook who stumbles into the beginnings of an acting career while fleeing from some nasty men with guns. Lockhart is transplanted to the other side of the country and under consideration for the lead in a detective series; in order to get him some ideas about what happens on the job, he gets paired up with real private detective Perry (Val Kilmer). Meanwhile, he's run into Harmony (Unfaithful's Michelle Monaghan), the girl he had a major crush on in high school who went out to Hollywood to become an actress. Perry is planning on keeping Harry out of danger, but the two of them quickly become embroiled in an ugly, complex case.

I don't watch too many comedies; not because I don't like them, but because I prefer other genres of film. So I don't laugh terribly much when watching movies. This month, though, I've laughed more at movies than I have in the past year. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was half the reason. (He Died with a Felafel in His Hand was the other half.) Kilmer and Downey are great foils for one another, and both have very good timing here. Add in a few overly weird minor characters and the mother of all Rube Goldbergian plots, and you've got yourself a winner. No one will mistake this for deathless cinema, but then again, it never aspires to be. *** ½

4 out of 5 stars Clever tribute to crime pix delivers both laughs and thrills.......2007-04-17

"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is one of those humorous takes on the "film noir" genre that wants to have it both ways: it makes clever comments and funny asides about the conventions of the genre (mostly via voiceover narration) while, at the same time, wanting to tell a genuinely involving "noir" story, too. And I have to say that, for the most part, the film succeeds. While I'm not as madly in love with this movie as many of the reviewers here, I certainly didn't feel that it's the train wreck some on this site describe it to be. Discovering this on DVD, I found it to be slick, fun, and clever. Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer in particular seem to be having a lot of fun. The DVD features attractive, slickly designed menus, dynamite picture and sound, and some good extras (including a gag reel that for once is actually fun to watch). Check this one out.

3 out of 5 stars Self-conscious noir.......2007-03-28

A small-time crook (Robert Downey Jr) stumbles into an audition while running from police and ends up with a free ticket to LA, where he becomes involved in a complicated scheme along with his high school sweetheart (Michelle Monaghan) and a gay PI (Val Kilmer). There is much to enjoy here, including some laugh-out-loud moments and some enthusiastic skewering of action movie cliches. In the end, however, it is a little too cute and self-conscious, though never boring. Stick around for the credits. Robert Downey Jr. co-wrote and performs the final song.

Only those with ice water in their veins won't get misty-eyed watching this moving film about the friendship of two professional baseball players, one of whom--in every sense--is playing his last season. A pre-stardom Robert De Niro portrays a rather simple-minded rookie catcher who comes under the wing of a veteran pitcher (Michael Moriarty). When De Niro's character is diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, Moriarty tries to help him get through one more season. Directed by John Hancock and based on the novel by Mark Harris (who also wrote the screenplay), the film builds on baseball's ability to foster its own lore of courage, nobility, loyalty, and--sadly--tragedy. Watching the youthful De Niro and Moriarty, with all that promise in their bones, adds to the overall romance of the film today. Also appearing are Vincent Gardenia and Danny Aiello. A perennial favorite for many. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Di Niro comes to bat.......2007-06-28

Bang the drum slowly is a great movie. Robert Di niro was unknown at the time, dominates the movie, the rest of the cast do a great job. Barbara Babcock is beautiful. This film is a sad film, except the Baseball part wich includes highlights from real games fans will remember the players. There are people who hate Baseball that love Bang the drum slowly.i agree with the comparison to Brians Song. i like Bang the Drum slowly better, because of Di Niro.

4 out of 5 stars More About Real Friendship Than Baseball.......2006-04-17

There was nothing hokey overly melodramatic about this story, and usually you get that with a sports story or about a good person dying. In this case, we have a combination of the two.
This is simply a mellow, sweet-natured human interest story well-acted by the two main stars: Michael Moriarity and Robert De Niro. Both are nice to watch, playing very easy-going non-offensive characters.
Moriarty plays a pitcher on a pennant-contending team who lovingly looks after his not-so-smart-but-dying teammate and friend (De Niro). By today's standards, it's slow-moving but I never got bored with it in several viewings. As nice a film as it is, there is one warning: a lot profanity by the manager (Vincent Gardenia) but it's not a kids' movie anyway.
I watched it years ago and then again recently when it came out on DVD. It's hard to get excited about it, yet it's a memorable story that I could never get out of my head. We all wish we had friends like the one Moriarty portrays here.

5 out of 5 stars One of my husband's all time favorites.......2006-03-09

Though I haven't seen it yet, my husband considers it a must-have classic.

5 out of 5 stars Bang The Drum Slowly.......2005-08-10

This sad, moving film showcases emerging brilliance of young DeNiro, with the underrated Moriarty also turning in a superb performance. Both baseball fans and devotees of great film alike should readily agree on this title.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Movie!.......2004-06-19

This is the film that you will not forget. This is a story of two roommates attempting to get through one final season. Michael plays the role of a pitcher who is the roommate of Robert DeNiro who plays the role of the catcher.DeNiro is
diagnosed with Hodgkins disease. Michael as his roommate and
intimate friend helps DeNiro cope with Hodgkins as well as
make the season to the end. This is one of the more touching
films that I have watched. It would compare to "Brian's Song"
as far as being emotional.DeNiro,in this movie definitely showed
signs of great things to come for him. And,who could ever forget
the haunting song that accompanied the movie.A definite must see.

Amazon.com essential video

Written for the stage and coherently opened up for the screen by veteran director Herbert Ross, Play It Again, Sam is closer to a conventional comedy than Woody Allen's more self-contained films, but his smart script and archetypal hero-nebbish achieve a special charm aimed squarely at movie buffs. Allen is Allan Felix, a film critic on the rebound after his wife's desertion trying to brave the choppy waters of born-again bachelorhood and struggling to reconcile his celluloid obsessions with the hazards of real-world dating. His apartment is a shrine to Humphrey Bogart, and it's none other than Bogey himself who materializes at strategic moments to counsel Allan on romantic strategy. He gets more corporeal aid from his married friends, Linda (Diane Keaton) and Dick (Tony Roberts), who try to orchestrate prospective matches and reassure him when those chemistry experiments explode. When Allan finds himself falling in love with Linda, the dissonance between fantasy and reality proves both funny and poignant--a precursor to the deeper emotionalism missing from the star's earlier directorial efforts that was soon to inform Allen's most affecting '70s comedies. It's also the start of his onscreen relationship with Keaton, further underscoring Allen's evolution toward a more satisfying contemplation of the friction between head and heart. --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny.......2007-07-02

Play It Again, Sam, written by and starring Woody Allen is just plain hilarious. Full of sight gags and tremendous one-liners, this is Woody at his "slapstick" funniest. Diane Keaton is great as Woody's friend and advisor. They have an excellent chemistry. The movie takes place in San Francisco, and is full of excellent imagery. Fun and fast-paced, this is a 4 star Woody Allen film well-worth the minor time investment (85 minutes).

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 Woody Allen.......2007-04-16

It has almost been forgotten that this film was not directed by Woody Allen - but this makes no difference it is still one of his greatest films.
We start the film with Allan Felix (Allen) watching Casablanca in the Cinema and feebly impersonating Bogart as he leaves the Cinema. The film proceeds with an imaginary Bogart advising Allan on how to deal with Women. Allan as you would expect is pretty hopeless!
This film is consistently funny with the blind date scene being one of the greatest comedy scenes ever filmed.
The script (based on Woody Allens own stage play) is full of great dialog, as you would expect.
Diane Keaton is wonderful in her role, and Tony Roberts is very funny in his supporting role as the business man who leaves a telephone number so he can be contacted everywhere he goes.
"I'll be at 362-9296 for a while; then I'll be at 648-0024 for about fifteen minutes; then I'll be at 752-0420; and then I'll be home, at 621-4598"
Remember this film was made more than a decade before mobile phones even existed in brick form.
The film finishes with a great recreation of the end of Casablanca.
If you don't like Woody Allen then you probably won't like this. However, if you have any appreciation of Woody and haven't seen this, you should buy this DVD now.

4 out of 5 stars Play it again, Woody.......2007-04-06

Directed by Herbert Ross, "Play It Again, Sam" (1972) is Woody Allen's film from the beginning to the final credits. Allen wrote the screenplay based on his Broadway play and he starred as Allan, a neurotic movie buff who writes the film reviews (what else?). Allan not just loves movies; he lives in the movies' world and constantly takes advices on how to get the girls from the legendary hero of his all time favorite movie "Casablanca", Humphrey Bogart's Rick. I am not a fan of "Casablanca" at all but if my favorite Artist is so much in love with it, maybe I should give it another try.

When Allan's wife Nancy leaves him, his best friend Dick (Tony Roberts) and his lovely wife Linda (Diane Keaton) try to fix him up with several eligible pretty young ladies. Very typically for Woody's characters, he is a total failure with them. The only woman he feels comfortable with, he shares the same insecurities and neuroses, the one whose Birthday he remembers and who he desperately wants is Linda, his best friend's wife. "Play It Again, Sam" is a remarkable movie for several reasons and one of them - it was the beginning of a wonderful working (and not only) relationship between Allen and Keaton that would result in the movies "Bananas" (1971), "Sleeper" (1973), "Love and Death" (1975), "Annie Hall" (1977), "Interiors" (1978), "Manhattan" (1979), "Radio Days" (1987), and "Manhattan Murder Mystery" (1993) and will bring them both well deserved fame and Oscars. Made 34 years ago, "Play It Again, Sam" holds up very well and I would call it my favorite earlier Woody's film and the best Woody's film that he has not directed.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic .......2007-03-25

A classic must have for any Woody Allen fan, especially fans of his early work. The movie cleverly incorporates Humphrey Bogart (indistinguishable from the real Bogart)as his character in 'Casablanca' (where this Woody Allen movie derives its title) tutoring an inept, timid Allen in the arts of wooing. The movie brilliantly incorporates Bogart and 'Casablanca' into the script, including key quotes and even ending with the same final scene. A Woody Allen masterpiece.SleeperAnnie Hall

4 out of 5 stars witty and authentically Woody Allen..............2007-02-18

Allan Felix (Woody Allen), a movie critic and avid fan of Humphrey Bogart, must re-acquaint himself with the bachelor lifestyle after his wife leaves him. He looks to his best friend, Dick (Tony Roberts) and his wife, Linda (a very young Diane Keaton) for help. Allan is a clumsy nebbish and is visited by the spirit of Humphrey Bogart (Jerry Lacy) who gives him advice in wooing the ladies--specifically Linda, who he finds himself falling for, and finds an opportunity to declare his love for her when Dick is out of town. What will Allan do? This clumsy, awkward and very neurotic man cannot be himself around any woman, once he has a romantic interest in her. Linda is the one woman he feels he can really be himself with.

This film runs parallel to the plot of CASABLANCA. For those of you who have seen it, you know what happens. For those of you who haven't, I won't ruin the story......you'll just have to see it. This is goofy slapstick and classic Woody Allen. Check it out......

An ultracreepy blend of horror and fantasy (think of it as Beauty and the Bugs) from Mexican director Guillermo del Toro (Cronos) about giant cockroaches in the subway tunnels beneath Manhattan. Like its DNA-altered spawn (the title refers to the way some insects evolve to resemble their predators), Mimic is not your everyday bug picture, but a more poetic (though quite gruesome) sort of film, literally crawling with bizarre, striking images. In this case, the mutant bugs are not the result of evil atomic experiments (as in Them!), but are the unexpected side effect of work done by an entomologist (Mira Sorvino) and her Center for Disease Control officer husband (Jeremy Northam), who, in a last-ditch effort to control a roach-carried disease epidemic that was killing children, released a genetically altered form of sterile cockroaches beneath the city. They stopped the virus, but... Also starring Charles Dutton, Giancarlo Giannini, F. Murray Abraham, and Josh Brolin. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Mimic (1997).......2006-01-01

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, Alexander Goodwin, Giancarlo Giannini, Charles Dutton, Josh Brolni, Alix Koromzay, F. Murray Abraham, James Costa.
Running Time: 105 minutes
Rated R for terror/violence and language.

"Mimic", like all great genre pictures, exists comfortably in two spheres: on the simple level, it speedily entertains as a gory fright film imbued with mordant humor; on the more difficult level, it provides symbolism and thematic undertow. Best of all, these two levels often work at the same time, such as when an old priest gets tossed off a building by one of the creatures, plummeting past a neon "Jesus Saves" sign, and crashing to a gory death on the pavement. A little while later, the creature drags the dead body into the gaping black maw of an open sewer. The latter is what "Mimic" is really really for: the importance of breeding and offspring. The movie's surreal opening, with its rows of linen-canopied hospital beds all in a row like so many little coffins, shows us sick children, gasping for air because a cockroach-borne disease is carrying them off. The battle lines are drawn in the first few moments: Us versus Them. Scientists Mia Sorvino and Jeremy Northam glean the cure for the dread disease by concocting a genetically-altered bug whose secretions kill off the diseased cockroaches; "Judas Breed", as it's called, will be the only true breed this couple will engender: Sorvino fails pregnancy tests at home, while their creature, supposedly unable to reproduce, grows apace underneath Manhattan's fallopian sewers. It merely seems like "nature's way" that the Judas Breed has mutated to the size of six feet, and can mimic standing upright like their human prey, It's also fitting that these creatures instinctively hone in on the vulnerability of children: they viciously rip apart two kids, and befriend another who has managed to communicate with them by clicking soup-spoons together.

This is an atmospheric thriller from Guillermo del Toro, director of "The Devil's Backbone" and "Cronos", who manages to mix great direction with good old fashioned monster horror to great effect. The concept itself is clever, even if the idea of bugs evolving to look very like humans is a little fa-fetched; however, once the action moves to the subway the fact that the bugs are clearly lethal no matter what they look like, makes this less important. The film is quite short and makes the action come quicker and seem more urgent. Several people get killed by the bug that wouldn't usually get killed in this sort of horror (children for example), this is very effective as it is quite scary to see the unexpected happen. The mood is dark throughout and Del Toro uses the sewers and subway to great effect, creating a real sense of claustrophobia, like the humans have entered the bug's world and not the other way round. The bugs are shown early on in the film - usually not a good idea (keep it hidden in the "Jaws" way), but here the special effects are good enough to make the bug really believable, yet the horror is not in seeing the bugs but in they way they hunt and kill, but the fear is in what could happen. The cast are great, Sorvino especially is very good in the lead. Jeremy Northam and Charles S. Dutton are good in support and Abraham Murray adds a bit of cameo class (though his role is quite unnecessary). The director is the real star, adding some genuine scares and real mood to a film that could have easily been just another creature-feature that goes straight to video and straight to the back of your mind. Overall a superior creature horror film.

5 out of 5 stars Smart movie, goes over most reviewer's heads........2005-10-16

Mimic is an extremely smart movie that respects the intelligence of its audience, and that may be its greatest downfall.
I won't go into the atmosphere and effects, allo of which are excellent. The other reviews here pretty much cover that gambit to good effect. It's a great horror flick, crawling with the sort of subtle and interesting touches that give good movies that 'something extra'.
My peeve isn't with the movie itself, but rather with the "dumbed-down" advertising and descriptions that lead to all sorts of miscomprehensions in reviews, not to mention a couple of bad sequels that took off in a very-wrong direction.
If one were to read and accept these reviews, and had any understanding of genetics or evolution, they'd be prone to dismiss the movie off-hand. Don't make that mistake. The story simply went over their head.
This isn't a dumb monster flick. Much the opposite, it's so smart the copywriters and reviewers didn't "get" some of its more intelligent aspects.

Just see it!

5 out of 5 stars Beauty and the Bugs.......2005-07-12

Not bad for a Mexican director I'm impress. This movie has giant mutant cockroaches living in the subways of New York their always killing people cause of them being attractive to human blood if a human put the cockroaches blood all over him they won't attack that human. These bugs are big all cause of an entomologist name Mira Sorvino and her husband. In order to kill all the bugs they have to kill the male he's the king.

3 out of 5 stars Nice concept, Above average movie.......2005-05-16

The idea of a genetic mutation miscalculation which leads to the higher evolution of insects to adopt human ways is not impossible. Del Toro took a very X-file-ish theme and created a very enjoyable sci-fi thriller. The movie was very fast paced and both the horror and suspense elements were done just right, not too little and not too overdone.

A few things I didn't like about this film was some of its more subtle things. Mira Sorvino was playing an entomologist, yet when she studies or investigate specimens, she takes no logical safety precautions. The same recklessness occurs repeatedly for her and every other cast throughout movie. Things like touching bugs that likely carry unknown diseases with your bare hands, or when they go underground to hunt for the roaches without any type of scientific or safety equipments is just very illogical to me. To think that in the beginning of the movie, the city undergone a catastrophic epidemic that were spread by roaches and for them to go on the rest of the movie every time without any planning or taking precaution is just unthinkable. The plot was nicely written and the story flowed well, but the reckless actions from supposedly "experts" just kills it. It doesn't just happen once or twice, but every single time. A number of scenes also seemed very forced and felt like they were put there just so the story can continue the way the director wanted, yet they made no logical sense.

Despite the few imperfections, this movie is still a great watch. I definitely recommend a rental if you are looking for a nice action thriller to kill a saturday night.

5 out of 5 stars Life will Find a Way.......2005-04-24

That quote from JURASSIC PARK always comes to mind in films like MIMIC.
A scientist finds a way to beat a horrible disease crippling and killing children, but the method used is not fully thought through. One senior geneticist is ignored, and the JUDAS bug is implemented. And what they have done is accelerate the genetic process by many thousands of generations in a short space of time ... in a species that was engineered to "die out".
The acting is top notch, casting has people perfect for the role, and this stellar cast delivers in spades.

ENJOY.

This CD is a perfect tool to view violence from another perspective and how the zero tolerance policy can be a controversial issue.

5 out of 5 stars Deals with todays hot issue of school violence.......2006-11-28

This is a very good movie. It really hits on the way schools are today. I believe everyone should see this. Watch with your children or parents and converse on what is going on. There has never been a movie like this. It gets to the point of the matter which is school bullying and what the outcome can be.

5 out of 5 stars a great movie with an amazing actor.......2006-11-06

i saw this movie on showtime and i was surprised to see that this movie
was made after what happened at those schools but then i thought this is
good, a movie like this should be made because people need to know about
this kind of thing. i was one of those kids who got teased in school and
at times i felt like going and shotting the people who tormented me but i
didn't, but i think every kid who's been teased should see this movie be-
cause it can show them that you don't have to go out there and kill the
people who hurt you, you can get revenge in different ways.
i also thought randy harrison was great in this movie, i've been a fan of
his sense queer as folk and i thought he was amazing in this movie and i
think he's going to go far. i can't wait to see his next movie and any thing else he does in the future.

5 out of 5 stars True high school drama!!.......2006-07-06

You know what? I saw this movie and loved it! This is a true high school drama! It is the only high school drama I would ever watch. It shows just what brutal of a place high school really is. I agree 100% with the guy who said like "bullying is true drama. Not my boyfriend ditched me or my parents caught me getting wasted and they took away my Porche". Bullying is true drama. Like I said this is the only high school drama I would ever watch. I really hate those stupid fake chick flicks that just glorify high school and have all that fake drama. I think it should be shown in all schools. I can almost gauruntee this movie would certainly change anybodys opinion on school bullying. Think before you bully somebody. You could wind up dead someday!

5 out of 5 stars Great film! Great actors!.......2006-05-05

Amazing work by these two young actors, Ben Foster and Randy Harrison. The white heat of passion and intensity of these two can melt solid concrete.

This 1968 kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare.

Half screwball romance, half television satire, Little Black Book follows insecure Stacy Holt (Brittany Murphy, Uptown Girls, 8 Mile), who has an idyllic relationship with a great guy named Derek (Ron Livingston, Office Space) and a job as an associate producer for a daytime talk show that fuses Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake. Then a cynical co-worker named Barb (Holly Hunter, Broadcast News) persuades Stacy to delve into Derek's Palm Pilot to learn more about his ex-girlfriends--which sends Stacy into a spiral of ever-increasing paranoid compulsion. Little Black Book takes some unexpected plot twists that some viewers will find inexplicable and others will find weirdly fascinating. The movie's split personality makes it unsuccessful as a whole but compelling in parts. Hunter steals the show, in more ways than one. Also featuring Kathy Bates, (Misery, About Schmidt) and Julianne Nicholson (Seeing Other People). --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Good plot and characters, but..........2007-01-29

Little Black Book stars Brittany Murphy and is about a woman (Stacy Holt) who starts to snoop around to find out more about her boyfriend's previous relationships.

The cast as a whole is good and performed well, the plot by itself is full of potential and much of it used with great success here, but as a whole I wil not be watching this movie again.

The reason for that is because the TV show that Stacy Holt is exective producer for is a Jerry Springer type talk show and much of the story revolves around that show. I personally don't like Jerry Springer and thought they used that setting way too much. Also, the style used for the entire film was just a little too disjointed. The plot was good, yet they did not use it as well as they could have.

Finally, no review for this movie would be complete without a comment regarding the ending. While some found the ending depressing I actually thought it was one of the better moments. I prefer realistic endings and this one fit that, at least until the last few minutes where it went back to being corny.

Like I said previously, I think the cast did a great job and the plot has a lot of potential but the shooting of the film and the use of the talk show in it just left me watching the clock waiting until it was over so I could watch something else.

2 out of 5 stars You'll never get this time back, so take my advice and don't do it.......2007-01-29

Brittany Murphy and Holly Hunter star in this way below mediocre "romantic comedy" about two producers at the Jerry Springer-esque Kippie Kann show. Kippie Kann (Kathy Bates) is supposedly losing viewers and they want to give the show a new twist. Accordingly, they take all sorts of new ideas for shows to make Kippie a bit less trashy. One of them: Little Black Books, or electronic ones like Palms and Blackberries. After her boyfriend lets it slip that he used to date a well-known model, Brittany Murphy's character, Stacy, takes her work home with her when he goes out of town and she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the Palm he left at home. Before you know it she's contacting all of his exes under the guise of getting them to be guests on the show, but in reality just because she can't trust her man.

This movie was tedious in a way that I can't even put into words, but I think it's enough to say that the hour and a half of my life that I will never get back will be sorely missed. The plot hinges on the idea that if you're dating someone who doesn't tell you every single minute detail of his dating life before you got together, that it's okay to snoop through his belongings and use duplicity and manipulation to find out the things you want to know. It paints a dreary picture for the state of true love, and it doesn't even do so with good acting or a strong plot. In fact, the only reason I gave this movie two stars instead of one is because Gavin Rossdale has a cameo and I just don't see enough of him these days. Take my advice and stay far far away from this stinker. If you want to be depressed about the state of relationships in today's world rent Closer, at least then you'll have some good acting to enjoy with the movie's pessimistic view of love.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly well executed formula entertainment.......2007-01-28

A TV talk show is having trouble coming up with new controversial entertainment. In the midst of ideas someone suggests that one can tell all about someone by reading their little electronic black book. The new girl on the block Stacy (Brittany Murphy) realizes that she does not know anything about her boyfriend Derek (Ron Livingston).

With the help of friends and co-workers they help Stacy exploit Derek's "Little Black Book". She may find out more than she wants to know. And to what end?

The story has a shackle takeoff a predictable middle and trouble wrapping up after the climax.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't go to where the romantic comedy convention says it should..........2006-11-30

I wasn't very keen on seeing "Little Black Book" since it has suffered very bad reviews. Finally, I rented it and it wasn't a disappointment at all. The story is quite basic: Stacy (played by Brittany Murphy) is a TV producer for a well-known talk-show. Things are going great for her, and she doesn't mind that her boyfriend never discusses his old relationships - well, until her new co-worker Barb (Holly Hunter) suggests she should do some research. It's not long before Stacy stumbles upon her boyfriend's little black book, a.k.a. his palm pilot.
First of all, "Little Black Book" is NOT a regular comedy. Sure, there is plenty of dialogue to keep you smiling and a few laugh-out-loud moments, but the whole concept is just not of the comedic type. At least not in the script, but Murphy's amazing comedic talent (also shown in "Just Married") is evident here and it breathes life into the story.
Second, "Little Black Book" is NOT a ROMANTIC film. It starts off like that, but it crosses the finish line as a coming-of-age story. The publicity for this film didn't do it justice - the trailers showed a hilarious romantic comedy, spoiling all the jokes and sending a wrong impression. This is not, by any means, a perfect movie. However, Brittany Murphy, Holly Hunter and the considerable talents of Josie Maran and Julianne Nicholson make sure it's not mediocre, either.

4 out of 5 stars A Surprising Twist Into Ruthlessness.......2006-10-12

When my wife rented this movie I thought, 'Oh great, another chick-flick'! Boy was I wrong. Brittany Murphy carries the film quite well. Holly Hunter provides a great supporting roll while Ron Livingston's very small role was nothing more than a necessary prop to the plot. Sometimes digging for the truth can lead you down a tormented path. I found the movie interesting, moving and surprising! Recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Daring dark comedy.......2007-06-12

I had heard about Kiss Kiss Bang Bang prior to its release, and fully intended on seeing it in theatres. However, it was put into limited release, and I missed out on it. It is unfortunate that this is the fate of such a fine film. I'm sure it will be one of those "DVD hits" like Donnie Darko, Boondock Saints and Pitch Black. The movie features under-rated actor Robert Downey Jr. as a petty burglar who happens, by chance, to land a gig as an actor. He's sent to Los Angeles for more screen tests and training with a detective - played by another under-rated actor, Val Kilmer - for his part in the film. Downey finds himself in the middle of the Hollywood party scene where he runs into Michelle Monaghan, whom he had grown up with in a small Iowan town. Together, the three of them are thrust into a plot featuring many dead bodies appearing in places they would rather not have them, and many dark comedic moments. The beauty of this film is how well writer/director Shane Black (adapted from a novel by Brett Halliday) mixes the conspiratorial murder mystery with off-kilter humor and fanciful cinematography. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, suspense, and humor all as independent movies, but brought together into one coherent piece moved it beyond any one part.

4 out of 5 stars Kiss Color Bang Dialog.......2007-02-21

This is a wonderful and much underrated film: and in Blu-Ray format the color is dazzling. Add to that the self-referential script (including set decoration that you have to scan carefully to get all the hidden jokes) and the flip dialog and canny narrative from Robert Downey,Jr. and they add up to a delightful evening of smiles, chuckles and outright guffaws! Watch closely!
