From a human standpoint, things are pretty tight at the 4077th. But adding a new character to a long-embedded, close-knit ensemble is a delicate operation. By M*A*S*H's sixth season, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and BJ (Mike Farrell) were partners in outrage against the war and army bureaucracy. With the departure of Larry Linville's Frank Burns, the much decorated series was in need of some new blood. Enter David Ogden Stiers as Charles Emerson Winchester III. Just as Henry Morgan's authoritative Col. Potter was the anti-Henry Blake, so was Charles just what the doctor ordered to give Hawkeye and BJ a worthy foil. Charles was pompous and arrogant, but, unlike Frank, he was Hawkeye's equal in the operating room. And he gave as good as was given to him, as witness the conclusion of his inaugural Emmy-nominated episode, "Fade Out, Fade In," in which he turns the tables on one of Hawkeye and BJ's reptilian practical jokes. In season 6, Gary Burghoff's Radar is mostly missing in action (he would transfer out of the series in season 8), but he figures prominently in "Fallen Idol," one of Burghoff's and Alda's finest half-hours, in which Hawkeye lashes out at Radar's "Iowa naivete" and hero worship.

The season's primary dramatic arc is Margaret's (Loretta Switt) marital woes, culminating in the Emmy-nominated two-parter, "Comrades in Arms," in which Hawkeye and Margaret, trapped by enemy fire, engage in a little close-order drill. The humanization of Margaret continues in "Temporary Duty," which also features one of the most memorable visitors to the 4077th, George "Goober" Lindsey, as the wild and wooly Roy Dupree, a temporary transfer who drives BJ and Charles crazy. Alan Arbus's psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Freedman, one of the series' most welcome recurring characters, makes a memorable return in "War of Nerves," one of his most dramatic episodes, in which a soldier Freedman sent back into combat, is unforgiving in blaming Sidney for his injuries. Two excellent ensemble episodes are "The Light That Failed, "in which the reading-starved camp shares a mystery novel, but doesn't have a clue what happens after the last page is missing, and "Mail Call Three," in which the camp reacts to news from home. Demerits again for no cast commentary, but this set once again offers viewers of the option of watching the episodes with or without a laugh track. --Donald Liebenson

Description

As the sixth season opens, Margaret's marriage has finally driven Frank Burns over the edge. Unfortunately, his subsequent replacement, Major Charles Emerson Winchester III, soon drives B.J. and Hawkeye over the edge as well. From his fur-trimmed coat to his shiny French horn, he almost makes B.J. and Hawkeye wish Frank were still there. Almost.

But as Winchester slowly finds his place within the OR, things get back to normal - or as normal as they ever get. Radar goes off in search of the perfect tattoo. Black marketeers steal all the unit's penicillin. Hawkeye and B.J. refuse to shower unless Charles stops blowing his horn. And Hawkeye and Margaret find comfort in each other's arms...if only for one night.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mash is great even after all these years........2007-03-09

I bought these for my husband and I also enjoy watching them. We never get tired of them. The quality of the DVD's are excellent.

3 out of 5 stars The addition of Charles was the best thing that happened to the later MASH seasons.......2007-01-10

This was Charles Emerson Winchester's first season (wonderfully played by David Odgen Stiers, a great character actor who is still doing wonderful work today). He replaced Frank Burns, who was quickly becoming a caricature in the 4th and 5th seasons. I ended up liking Charles much more than I probably should have. The audience was supposed to dislike him because he was a snob, an egomaniac, and a blue blood who stuck his nose up at the rest of the camp. Yet, he was a brilliant surgeon who knew about great wine, food, and art. In these later episodes, BJ and Hawkeye grew increasingly PC, preachy, and sanctimonious. Charles used to rib them endlessly, but I ended up liking his upper class, blue blood insults on Hawk and BJ, because I disliked Hawkeye and BJ so much. Charles was not as gung ho as Burns, as was much more human as the war (and seasons) progressed. He really was the only character who seemed to grow as the series went on. Hawkeye and BJ continued in the same preachy vein, and none of the other characters really ever grew out of their initial portrayals, so Charles was definitely the best part of the later MASH seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Frank Hello Mr. Winchester.......2006-11-17

The addition of David Ogden Stiers lifts this Mash Series 6 to one of the best of the eleven. The opening episode Fade In Fade Out is especilly enjoyable as Winchester is exiled from protective Tokyo to the 4077. Winchester proves to be a prime time player in the series from this opening episode. He is much more complex a character than Frank Burns every was(not to say that Frank was not funny). He has standout performances in The Light That Failed, Dr Winchester and Mr Hyde, and The Smell of Music. The finish to the later epiode is priceless.

Margaret Houlihan evolves quite a bit throughout the series as her relationship with Donald Penopscott fluctuates from good to bad to good and then bad again. The Comrade in Arms episode shows a lot of Margaret's vulnerability and she becomes less independent as this season wears on.

Klinger continues to amuse, Radar plays his part with conviction and of course Hawkeye is still ever the grandstanding doctor. BJ and Col Potter have key roles as well. This is truly an allstar cast that can be humorous and serious within any half hour epsiode.

I know I have rated all these episodes very highly. However this Series 6 is what you would call the best of the best.

4 out of 5 stars MASH Season Six.......2006-08-06

The video quality of the episodes is terrific, just as though they were newly filmed. Speaking of which, the medium of film somehow seems more appropriate for this series than would videotape. I saw very few of them when they were new (30 years ago) since I was in graduate school at the time, but I recall how much my parents laughed at and enjoyed the sharp witty dialogue, particularly of Alan Alda. This was one series that seemed to improve with the departure of some early regulars (Trapper and Henry Blake)and their replacement by other more interesting characters(Colonel Potter, B. J. Hunnicut, Klinger, and Major Winchester), and writing that also seemed to get even better and more mature as the series progressed. The absence of commercials on DVD is a nice luxury. The cataloging of scenes in each episode is a real plus. In short, Season Six is a thoroughly enjoyable 24-episode experience viewing a program that doesn't seem dated at all and shows genuine high quality of craftsmanship on the part of those who put it all together. And, it looks like they were having fun doing it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best shows of all time.......2006-03-30

I know a couple of people who almost refuse to watch MASH after the third season since it doesn't have Blake or Trapper. I know a lot of people who won't watch MASH after the fifth season because it doesn't have Frank. To me, Frank in the fourth and fifth season was getting kind of annoying...don't get me wrong, I LOVE those seasons, but I think Charles, who we meet this season, is such a breath of fresh air. He is the complete opposite of Frank and I love it. Charles absolutely does not want to be there. And the only thing Charles and Frank had in common is that they both couldn't stand Hawkeye and BJ, but the ways they survive those two are completely different. If you don't like Charles right away, just wait until you get to the fifth episode when Charles is making an audio tape for his parents. When he pulls that rubber chicken out of the tea pot and tells his parents to "get me the hell out of here!", you're going to love him. Season six is just filled with hilarious and incredible episodes. There is no way I would ever give a season of MASH less than five stars. It was a fantastic series.

5 out of 5 stars My boys love this dvd!!!.......2007-06-08

Educational and entertaining. Great music, lots and lots of trains, funny "oh no's!"...what more can preschool kids want? Dads and Grandads love the series as well. Ok, so mom also laughs out loud when Buster in the blue engine disregards Controls' admonishment to slow down when he enters the shed!

5 out of 5 stars A hit with toddlers.......2007-05-07

My son, who is about to turn two, LOVES this video. The songs are great, and there's a nice mix of toy and real trains. Part 4 is the best of the three. The narration adds a bit of interest for parents, but the kid who does it is awful... he has no idea what he's reading! Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars 2000 miles later and the kids still love it!.......2006-07-07

I may be sick of it, but my two year old twins love this DVD!!! We road tripped for 2000+ miles last month and this was the only DVD my kids wanted to watch. I tried others, but they kept asking for "choo choo". If you're going on vacation, you will definitely want to have this along!

5 out of 5 stars Very popular with my three year old and my six year old.......2006-03-10

I purchased this DVD because I was tired of checking out the worn out video versions at the local library. My boys both LOVE it, and even my five year old daughter enjoys watching it sometimes. It is really cute - they show little toy trains in action, telling about the trains they represent, or just to different music. The children's favorite parts are the "accident" segments, where things fall over and a silly voice says "Oh no!"

5 out of 5 stars DS it COMPLETELY Spellbound.......2004-09-30

DS totally loves this dvd - and it's nearly an hour and a half since it's three VHS volumes in one. I like the fact that it also teaches through speaking and fun choo choo songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD set .......2007-04-29

I love Xena. I put off ordering the set because the original price was so high but the price was definately reasonable for such a great set that will become harder and harder to find in the next years.

My only complaint is that the individual season boxes aren't placed in a bigger box or just one large box. I'm a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and love how the entire DVD set is packaged in one compact box.

4 out of 5 stars Warrior Princess.......2007-01-14

She's a warrior princess, what could be better? Maybe less campiness. Xena, accompanied by her sidekick (lover?) Gabrielle conquer bad guys in ancient Greece. This was originally a spin-off of the Hercules series, but soon gained a following of its own. Each episode was generally self-contained and often used a myth or mythical character as the backdrop for the episode. Xena was not an Amazon, although Gabrielle became one after she tried to save an Amazon's life. The show was kind of goofy, but was great mind-numbing entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-04-11

I love all of my Xena Series. For the Xena lover, or Gabriel, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Proud New Zealander.......2006-02-10

I am in the city Xena was filmed in. I have good friends and myself who were all extras in various episodes. I feel very proud knowing that this is the first great NZ production, followed ofcourse by Hercules , Lord of the Rings and King Kong. Take Notice world, NZ is on its way up!!!!

Buy this great piece of TV as you can watch them again and again!! You will never get bored and you will see great NZ Acting!

5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2005-12-07

This series was so awesome.

It should be bought like this, all at once. That way you can watch it all the way through and experience the greatness of Xena :)

Product Description

An engaging story that prepares children for traveling on an airplane, Shae by Air details the JOURNEY, not the destination. Made by a parent, and told from a young child's perspective, Shae by Air is a fun, educational way to prepare young children for the long lines and the security checkpoint (removing shoes and coats, walking through the beeping metal detector), the ear popping that accompanies takeoff and landing, as well as how to entertain and behave themselves while flying (no kicking the seats!). Your child will want to be a Good Little Traveler, just like Shae! Designed and filmed with the input of child behavior specialists, the premise of each of the DVD Toolkits is that children, even small ones, have the capacity to understand what to expect and what is expected of them, and with that the ability to be respectful good little travelers. The Toolkits are FOR CHILDREN (ages 2-6).

My daughter absolutely love the video. It helps also when we get to the airport and goes thru the check point. She is a pro!!!!.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Travel Tool for Even Young Toddlers .......2007-05-12

Although Shea by Air is intended for children two years and up, we used the DVD to prepare our 16-month old grandson for a trip from Minneapolis to Kauai, Hawaii involving many hours and three plane changes. He intently focused on Shea and preparations for the trip, what would happen at the airport and on the plane. After viewing and talking about Shea both before and during the flight, this very active toddler, much to our
surprise and delight, turned out to be a "very good little traveler." I'm convinced preparation using this DVD was the key to flights that were enjoyable for him, his parents and grandparents and all other passengers.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for 1st time travellers.......2007-05-09

I got this for my son (3 years) before our first flight. He watched it over and over (it isn't very long) and when we got to the airport, he was very proud that he knew what to do at each stop (ticket counter, security line). On the plane, he was very proud to tell the people around us, and the flight crew that HE was a good little traveller and would never kick the seat in front of him!!! I think it made our flight so much easier! Thank you!!

5 out of 5 stars What a great video!.......2007-04-21

We are preparing to move from Florida to Australia and bought this DVD after seeing the reviews. Though we have not yet made the trip, this video captivated our 2 & 3 year old boys. They love Shae and have become fascinated with airplanes, the security line, not kicking the seat in front of you... etc.
I would highly recommend this to anyone travelling with a toddler!

5 out of 5 stars This is a tool ALL children should have before flying!.......2006-11-04

This is an incredible tool to prepare your child for air travel.
My two year old was captivated by Shae and could relate to her throughout the process.
I liked that the DVD addressed common issues that children face in an airport and on an airplane -
going through security (putting their belongings on the moving belt),
not kicking the seat ahead of them, "pop" of the ears, etc.

Even though this is intended for toddlers, I believe it would be informative for ANY child who is preparing for a flight.

Thank you for creating this professional, informative, developmentally appropriate DVD-
this will make a difference for many people:
the children that learn from watching it, the parents of these prepared children, and the other passengers onboard-
NOT affected by kicked seats or screaming kids!

I am excited to include this tool on my website JetWithKids. Thank you!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A duck with the heart of a princess, is still a duck ... with the heart of a princess.......2006-12-27

This is a very dramatic story told with beautiful classical music, somewhat rough but powerful and charming animation, and the American voice actors do a great job of bringing the characters to life (I haven't heard the story in Japanese yet). From a traditional Fairy Tale love story point of view the ending of "Tutu" might surprise the viewer, but I think it is a mistake to categorize "Tutu" as a traditional Fairy Tale - it goes beyond. I found the ending of "Tutu" both emotionally and intellectually satisfying being mindfull of the story's own premises, for Ducks love is not a possessive kind of love, but rather an altruistic kind, and our heroine succeeds to show, that the power of hope makes it possible to influence ones destiny itself, even when you are not a powerful being ... and that's not an unhappy ending in my book ;-)

5 out of 5 stars reality_tale.......2006-11-26

This was a superb anime, right to its suspenseful and bitter end. Smitten with a prince deprived of his heart, the bumbling but endearing heroine strives to aid the one she adores and ultimately is left with unrequited love and the physical form of a duck. After considering this, I find that this is what so enthralled me. A fairytale which begins in a predictable manner is fed a wicked twist of reality for its finale. I believe that this anime depicts the grimmer view of love as many are accquainted with it. In a brilliant manner, this anime also contrives to portray a finish where wrongs have been rectified yet the good characters recieve misery as evil ones are perserved.
Of course, that is another factor which I would comment upon. What is gradually revealed to the watcher is that no characters are directly capable of being classified as good or evil. Each was compelled to act as their emotions deemed proper, another similarity to reality.
Truly, this anime is intriguing and thought provoking, a must-have for any fan.

2 out of 5 stars Whole series ruiend by sadistic and sad ending . . ........2006-10-16

The kinky Drosselmeyer couldn't have done it better. Take a sweet character
that works very hard to help someone she loves - and splatter her in muck to show
that nothing had any purpose after all.
Really all the horrible things that happened in the town were because she
tried to help the Prince. In return, she gets one of the worst outcomes,
so bad that it makes turning into a speck of light sound good.
What started out to be a creative venture into the tried and true world
of fairy tales is rapidly destroyed by the super let down of the ending.
Warning - spoilers ahead.
What was a beautiful and charming rendition of the same old stories we've
all heard over and over is totally ruined with the ending. It's like if
the Prince had made off with the dragon instead of Sleeping Beauty or
Cruella Deville had gotten to make that coat out of those 101 Dalmations
after all . . .
The ending left me that winded and sick and the word I had at the end of
it only rhymed with 'Duck'. What the heck is wrong with anime producers,
you can have a maginficent production and it's like they sadistically want
to ruin it on purpose. In the case of this story, what I like about it was
that it tried to escape the steryotypical fairy tale story and retell it
with an added twist. What started out as a twist ended up warping it out
of all recognition, with the bad guys (gals) not getting the punishment
they deserve, but rewards, and the characters people want to see happy end
up worse than before.
It's like they had that repulsive Drosselmeyer character choose the ending
for maximum cruelty. I was no fan of Prince Mutant or whatever, but come
on, he ends up with the one who imprisoned him?! How about Duck herself?
An added twist I was hoping for was that she really WAS princess Tutu and
that her memories, true self would be revealed at the end. Not so.
What happens to her is in my estimation, one of the cruelest things.
Having loved and sacrificed for a puling milksop she gets, what? Not a
return to lost humanity or even someone else to love. She doesn't even get
to stay human!
She gets turned into a duck.
Even the frickin' cat sensei got a better ending than that!
I think given the story content, that the best ending would have been for
the Prince to go back to being a character, Rue to go out in a speck of
light after she confesses her `love' and for there to be a showdown with
the evil Drosselmeyer. After that, Fakir could realize that love had snuck
up on him unawares and Duck would find out that she had lost her memory
because Drosslemeyer imprisoned her in the story. Whether she and Fakir
would fall in love could be left to a future season, like `Chapter of the
Swan' which incidentally is hinted at with some of the imagery. Maybe a
new character could come and give her the love she so richly deserves.
It is pretty telling at the end that when the old haunts in the story are
reshown in the epilogue they noticibly lack Duck. In fact each scene has a
dark shadow as a blight for half the screen to symbolize the lost presence
of a bright shining personality. Even her friends kind of remember that
someone is missing . . .
It will be hard to watch this again, knowing what happens. You are left
with some vague line about hope springing once more, but the last thing
you see is Duck dozing in a pond while Fakir uses his writing talent to
clean up the mess in the town. Ugghh.
I warn any who start this series to prepare yourself to get the same old
rear-end treatment that a lot of animes seem to give. No just conclusion,
many threads left untied and a near impossibility of watching it again.
Which is a shame, because it is 5 stars all the way until the last 5
minutes of episode 26 when you begin to realize that the 'real' tragedy
is that being perpetrated on the viewer.
'Nuff said.

The closing episodes of this nonsensical series include spoofs of Captain Harlock, Gundam, Dragon Ball, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers ("Municipal Force Daitenzen"), and Fist of the North Star. The various sketchy plots involving Excel, Hyatt/Hatchan, Menchi, Watanabe, Sumiyoshi, and Iwata from the apartment next door, long-suffering Mr. Pedro, and Lord Il Palazzo, simply collapse in a welter of parodies, violence and flashbacks. The story more or less ends with episode 25, but the fun ends in episode 26: the film makers attempt to live up to the title "Going Too Far" with tasteless gags involving rivers of blood, love hotels, massage parlors, and plain old sex. Even fans of Excel are likely to be put off by this descent into vulgarity; the faint-hearted should avoid it entirely. When he died 10 years ago, Ryo Hayakawa's father left more than the restaurant Ryo's mother runs: his daughter inherited his talent for baseball, including a jet-propelled fastball. Determined to overcome sexist opposition and make a girls' team the national champion, Ms. Himuro, the head of prestigious Kisaragi High, gives Ryo a scholarship. Then complications arise: snobbish tennis ace Izumi dislikes Ryo; handsome baseball star Hiroki is smitten with her; drunken coach Kido has to find enough top players. Hiroki's attraction is understandable as Ryo's a very likable character. She's not a klutz or a whiner, as many anime heroines are; she's proud of her abilities but surprised at where they take her.

As the series continues, the large-framed but timid Mao, shortstop Kanako, and the dim wannabe star Yoko join the team. But they need a power hitter, and Ryo focuses her attention on Izumi. Complicating the relationship between the girls is Hiroki's growing interest in Ryo, and the romance Izumi's mother (now the head of the school) and Ryo's father shared 20 years ago. The team scores an upset victory over the champion boys' team and earns the right to compete interscholastically. But their elation proves short-lived when reporters disinter a decades-old scandal involving Ryo's father, and Ryo struggles to understand if and how the scandal could be true.

When the Kisaragi nine reaches the tournament semifinals, the girls find themselves facing the boys' team from their school, led by top hitter/heartthrob Hiroki. The game becomes a duel between pitcher Ryo and Hiroki, intensified by their attraction to each other. The series concludes on an upbeat note that is neither predictable nor pat. Princess Nine ranks as one of the best series for girls in recent years, with characters who are strong, capable individuals but who still exhibit human weaknesses. With any luck, the show will be continued: Ryo, Hikana, Yoki, Seira, Koharu, Yoko, Mao, Kanako, and Izumi--and Hiroki--deserve another season, at least. (Rated 12 and older, but suitable for younger viewers: Alcohol use, brief nudity, minor profanity, minor violence) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Masterpiece for the Sports or Anime fan.......2005-11-29

When I first saw the trailer of "Princess Nine", I wasn't at all convinced of the series' potential. Being raised with baseball however, it never ceased to attract my attention as a lifetime fan, player, and student of the game.

When I finally took the plunge and forked over the $54 to purchase it, I was optimistic. When I began watching the series, I was hooked instantaneously. I was thrilled as the series unfolded into a complete Anime - a compelling story, a cast of individually unique and extremely interesting characters, and the perfect blend of action, suspense, drama, comedy, romance, and inspiration. It is often said that true masterworks of Anime are those which the viewer wishes to never see end - "Princess Nine" is without a doubt a member of that category.

Although not all may understand its message, its symbols, or its true meanings, this is an Anime you will regret missing for as long as you own a DVD Player or any other form of Media Player. With a "not what you expected" ending which may leave some unsatisfied, and the extreme disappoint which follows when discovering there is no sequel - some may find this series to be disappointing. But in this case, the pros outweigh the cons by 100-fold.

This is a truly inspirational anime. Even the non-sports fan will appreciate the message of triumph over adversity, and the fight to break the stereotypes of a national culture. As "Princess Nine" teaches us: those who never give up never lose.

5 out of 5 stars I could give this nine star's.......2005-10-12

It centures around Ryo Hayakawa, a happy-go-lucky 15-year old schoolgirl who with an incredible left arm. Like her father, she's is an exceptional pitcher. Were she a boy, she would have easily been recruited by one of any prestigious Japanese High School baseball teams for national competition.

5 out of 5 stars Princess Nine: A Wonderful Treat.......2005-06-07

Ever since the summer of 1986, when subtitled anime began appearing on VHS in the form of subtitles the majority of anime consisted of science fiction and mecha-inspired anime titles. Recently, there has been a string of new titles being released that starts with a strong beginning for the title but the ending has been a little bit lackluster.

Having picked up this boxed set through the ADV-Films website for a very low price, I've begun watching this series and not only does it start with a strong beginning but there is a lot going on in this series that vows to keep your attention tuned into these female leads. While the character design seems a little misplaced at times, with some of the character designs for the women in this series and the anime-style of the men which resembles the designs of the old Speed Racer series it isn't the character design that will keep you enthralled, it's the overall dramatization of these characters that keeps you watching the following episodes for more on their story.

This series focuses on the first female baseball team for the prestigious Kisaragi High School for Girls and their track to the championships at Koshien Stadium. If you're looking for a creative and strong new anime series that combines intelligent writing with superb anime quality then you really need to check this series out and see what everyone is clamoring about.

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Have To Like Baseball..........2005-04-14

You don't have to like baseball to enjoy this series. It's excellent - great character development, no filler episodes, and a SATISFYING ENDING (sometimes disappointingly rare in the anime world). I watched the whole series in 2 days and my only gripe is that I wanted more. Princess Nine is definitely one of my best anime purchases. I just hope that the next series I watch is near as good!

5 out of 5 stars An anime worth its weight in GOLD!!!!!!.......2005-01-29

Princess Nine crosses the boundry between guys and girls. In this brilliant series you'll see nine girls come together to prove that women can compete on equal terms with men. These girls will go on an emotional rollercoaster that will test their skills, their friendship, their trust and their willingness to achieve their dreams. This is an anime soap opera at its best and you'll be kept at the edge of your seat from start to finish. Each of these girls must overcome personal hardships in order to make their dreams a reality. You'll see Ryo try to deal with her father's tragic past. You'll see Yuki attempt to overcome her past of being alone and you'll see Kanako battle with her father (who happens to be the principle) in trying to allow her to even play...and that's just to name a few things of what to expect.

This is the kind of series that you'll definitely enjoy rather your an anime fan or not. I personally can't imagine anyone who collects anime to over look this masterpiece. Princess Nine is in a class of its own and I'm sure that for all those who have already seen it will agree that this is by far one of the greatest anime series ever!

As the adventures of the female vigilante posse the Knight Sabers conclude, director Hiroko Hiyashi has too little story to fill too much time, and the last five episodes feel padded. In "Hydra," the increasingly powerful and insane Galatea somehow "merges her consciousness" with the skyscraper of the Genom Company, transforming it into a likeness of herself and launching it into space. Her objective is the Showhamm Project, a network of solar energy-collecting satellites: controlling them will enable her to spread madness among Boomer robots throughout world and make herself the master of mankind. Sylia, from whose tissue Galatea was created and who has sworn to destroy her, withdraws from the conflict, leaving Nene, Linna, and Priss to save the planet. The filmmakers try for an Evangelion-style metaphysical ending. The Knight Sabers suddenly develop the power to bond with the hard suits that give them superpowers, and instead of destroying Galatea, they cause her to merge with the universe; she rains onto the Earth as a shower of glittering particles. The Bubblegum Crisis series owes its popularity to no-holds-barred action and tough, capable female characters, not theological/philosophical speculations. "Suggested 15 Up" for violence, profanity, and nudity; alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Knights In Spaaaaaace.......2005-06-10

Like all good series, Bubblegum Crisis 2040 must come to an end. The final DVD is packed with five action-packed episodes. Galatea morphs with the Genom Tower and takes off into space. The Knight Sabers must find a way to follow her. But how can they do that in a deserted Tokyo taken over by Boomers? Even if they can get to space, how can they hope to defeat a machine queen who speaks machine language and has declared herself God? Especially considering the Knight Sabers hardsuits are really boomers themselves . . .

Aside from Galatea giving her shape to the tower top (how corny is that?), the last volume is as philosophical and character-driven as it is sci-fi action. Lots of thoughtful dialouge. I highly recommend this DVD as well as the entire series.

Sylia Stingray is my hero. If I ever cosplay, I want to be her.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original.......2002-06-21

I will not review the plot here as there are plenty of other places to get that info. I just want to say that I thought this version of Bubblegum Crisis and the Knight Sabers was better than the original series. I know there are plenty of purists that will argue with me on this and the orignal series was the anime that got me interested in anime. Still this series has a much better and more consistant storyline than the original and, or course, has more time in which to develop the story.
The ending of the series, which this DVD is about, is more philosophical than most but I found that refreshing. It was more of a conclusion than the original series.
I do wish the publishers had added more interesting information in the extra features, though. The character profiles were OK but I have come to expect so much more on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars KINDA LOST ME!!!!.......2002-05-31

After the turn to evangelion type technology which was a good take on the whole "remake" thing, the two shows are completely different (the 1987bgc and the 1996bgc). After vol.4 the show became a totally alternative take on the story.Boomers had their side of the story told in Galatea's prologue to ep.25, which was indeed a smart move. Giving Motoslave a part did look good even though unexpected when the "kill'em all" Priss actually asked for it's help very nicely.
But when the philosofy started i lost it!!!
Why did Galatea stop when she was winning,i mean if the only thing she needed was a kind word and a speech about "one making their own destiny" then they should have just done that from the beginning not start chasing each other like resident evil.
She lost too fast too easy with too many unanswewred questions like:
1)How did the Knight sabers make it home after they landed on earth(i mean they were naked and in deserted areas)?
2)Why didn't Priss just kick Galatea's [behind] with the giant Eva like boomer?
3)Does Priss have the healing time of X-men's Wolverine or is she even faster, she had been pierced by the Hardsuit and got kicked around on the rubble AND had no air to breathe(Motoslave had no air supply).
And finally did Tokyo survive all of this.

4 out of 5 stars Better ending than EVA.......2002-05-03

Though that isn't hard when you think about it, but the end is good. I was hoping for a little more action, but I think budget was starting to nag on them quite a bit. More of the Motoslave would have been nice, then again, as I said before, more action would have been nice.

Overall, the end is a bit silly, not that I'm complaining as this was a brilliant series all way through.

4 out of 5 stars hmm.. this could have been better........2001-08-17

Maybe i'm just being anal but, I found the end of this series some what lack luster. while the first three epsoides on the dvd are fine, the last two is where things( in my opinion) fall apart. epsidode 25 is very choppy with the knight sabers running around being very useless, and episode 26 seems incomplete. ....I want more. overall worth buying. Then again i'm bias, cause I'm in love with priss.
