As with Star Wars, the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon: the cliffhanging movie serials of the past. Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes, the Jones features tapped into Lucas's extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old, but popular, story model. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky, Gunga Din-inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference, some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence. (Pro-Temple of Doom people, on the other hand, believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio.) One thing's for sure: Harrison Ford's swaggering, two-fisted, self-effacing performance worked like a charm, and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders. Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series, too--Karen Allen, Sean Connery (as Indie's dad), Kate Capshaw, Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliot, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies among them. Years have passed since the last film (another is supposedly in the works), but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Scenes were deleted :(.......2007-07-02

I watched the entire DVD version and unfortunately, the entire movies are not there. A couple scenes were deleted from all 3 movies.

Probably my favorite scene that was deleted was in Temple of Doom, during the dinner scene. The part where the monkey's scalp is pulled off and it shows the monkey's brain, was deleted from the DVD version.

This was an absolute waste of money. I want the ENTIRE movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Deserving of its AFI Top Movie List Ranking.......2007-06-30

I love the Indiana Jones series. They were fantastic when they first came out, when I was a young teen, enjoying the fast paced action and sharp witty comments. They're equally great now that I'm older and can see the much deeper meaning in many of the interactions. The movie series does a fantastic job of both providing light, entertaining for the young ones as well as some quality character interactions for those who seek them.

Harrison Ford shines in a role which, in the hands of another actor, might have turned into a cliche. Well, it IS a cliche in the sense that the adventure guy acts as if he's in a video game - running, jumping and shooting his way out of trouble. But he's so much more. He has his doubts, his weaknesses. He knows what he's doing is very risky, and he judges his chances with an experienced eye before leaping into the fray.

I've seen these movies so many times that I'm very glad they're on DVD, where a tape is not wearing holes in it. There's always something new to spot in a situation. The little details tucked into the corners are just astounding.

Highly, highly recommended. This is a set that every home should own. You can pop it into the player at any time, with pretty much any crowd, and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones DVDs.......2007-06-27

This series (the first 3 Indiana Jones movies) is a classic, and a great deal of fun.

5 out of 5 stars The ride of your life.......2007-06-21

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas wanted to make a movie that was like the old action adventure movies and they succeeded. The movies grab you by the throat from the beginning and add suspense, quirky joke lines and fast-paced action.

Settle back with your favourite drink, grab a container of popcorn, dim the lights and get ready for the best entertainment night you have had for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars First class, all the way........2007-06-14

I recently picked up this boxed set, and couldn't be happier. I loved these movies as a kid, and still enjoy them immensely as an adult. The digital remastering is gorgeous -- the colors are vivid and the picture crisp. The 4th disc of bonus material is also well done. I won't even comment on the films themselves -- quality material that stands the test of time. Classic, action-packed Spielberg. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Jurassic Park
Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton's novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg's Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there's no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. --Tom Keogh

The Lost World - Jurassic Park
In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg's sequel to Jurassic Park is a poorly conceived, ill-organized film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn't seem to care that the pieces of this project don't add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in Jurassic Park) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). A complete bust.--Tom Keogh

Jurassic Park III
Surpassing expectations to qualify as an above-average sequel, Jurassic Park III is nothing more or less than a satisfying popcorn adventure. A little cheesier than the first two Jurassic blockbusters, it's a big B movie with big B-list stars (including Laura Dern, briefly reprising her Jurassic Park role), and eight years of advancing computer-generated-image technology give it a sharp edge over its predecessors. While adopting the jungle spirit of King Kong, the movie refines Michael Crichton's original premise, and its dinosaurs are even more realistic, their behavior more detailed, and their variety--including flying pteranodons and a new villain, the spinosaurus--more dazzling and threatening than ever. These advancements justify the sequel, and its contrived plot is just clever enough to span 90 minutes without wearing out its welcome.

Posing as wealthy tourists, an adventurous couple (William H. Macy, Téa Leoni) convince paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and his protégé (Allesandro Nivola) to act as tour guides on a flyover trip to Isla Sorna, the ill-fated "Site B" where all hell broke loose in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. In truth, they're on a search-and-rescue mission to find their missing son (Trevor Morgan), and their plane crash is just the first of several enjoyably suspenseful sequences. Director Joe Johnston (October Sky) embraces the formulaic plot as a series of atmospheric set pieces, placing new and familiar dinosaurs in misty rainforests, fiery lakes, and mysterious valleys, turning JP3 into a thrill ride with impressive highlights (including a T. rex versus spinosaurus smack-down), adequate doses of wry humor (from the cowriters of Election), and an upbeat ending that's corny but appropriate, proving that the symptoms of sequelitis needn't be fatal. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Good deal.......2007-06-27

Great fun to watch again these 3 great movies with my daughter. Very good presentation for a good price. Great value.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful package.......2007-06-27

Jurassic Park is a great movie, no doubt about it. And this package is also great... It's very well made, and opens up revealing beautiful images.
The second movie (The Lost World) is boring and it doesn't get near the first.
Jurassic Park III is another great one... It isn't better than the first, but it's way better than the second.
And the many extras that comes within the discs are good too.

I think that the only fault of this box set is the lack of english subtitles. There's english closed captions only.

5 out of 5 stars Dinosaur lovers unite!.......2007-06-15

When the first Jurassic Park movie came out I fell in love with the brachiosaur "Welcome to Jurassic Park" scene and have been hooked ever since. To have the three movies in a set and the additional footage is just a pleasure. True the plot of the second movie (The Lost World) is not in the same league with that first vision, but the dinosaurs are so great that it is still fun. The third movie, however, is much closer to the first in quality and almost equally entertaining, thanks in part to the acting skills of William H. Macy.

It is the dinosaurs, however, that star in this trilogy. It is amazing to me how the well the special efffects have held up! Definitely worth the cost of the DVDs. Dinosaur lovers unite and ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars THRILL RIDES GALORE !!!.......2007-06-13

I have been a nut for Dinosaur movies since I was a kid and they were shown on a square screen in black & white in theatres. I saw these at the theater and I have to brag that my sourround is better ! The movies are sharp, colorful and the sound is wonderful!!! Dinos tramping all over the place !!! Oh by the way the EXTRAS are superb!! I love seeing these guys loving what they are doing and it shows in the movies! Its amazing how they make this stuff work! What a great job!!! Delightful, and entertaining fantasy fun for the kid in all of us!!! GET THE POPCORN!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great films, but do not buy this set........2007-06-12

This is far from a Complete set. Because it does not have the Two-Disc versions of the films. The first two X-Men movies have great Two-Disc sets and I was dissapointed that this set only included the Single-Disc versions. Although the third movie does not have a Two-Disc set I think there will be one in the future. Only buy this set if you don't care about the features, but if your like me buy the Two-Disc sets induvidualy or wait for and Ultimate Edition Collection.

4 out of 5 stars Hey everyone It's the X-men...or is it?.......2007-05-24

Alright, here it goes.
Xmen 1 was terrible. Sorry. They chose a very good wolverine but the movie could have been so much more than it was.Isn't cyclopes the leader of the Xmen? Yeah I thought so. Isn't Wolverine the mean, could care less, arrogant, 5-foot-3, massive built killing machine? Yeah, but Hugh Jackman still played him well. Storm is such a loser in this movie. Sorry Halle. Perfect Prof. X. Bad Magneto, Sorry, er whatever ur name is. Mystique...um...was weird...and naked...and ugly. All the action was saved till the end. C'mon. And it seems they took these x-men from the Ultimate Marvel Universe instead of regular Marvel which was mistake number 1. This movie gets a 2 out of 5.
X-men 2 was way better. Again Cyclops is played as the wimp in the background and Wolverine seems to be the leader of the X-men. The school being attacked was great. Storm got a little better, but still lame. Rogue is such a loser and so is Iceman. Doesnt Rogue fly? Yeah I thought so. Is Iceman really gonna do nuthing the whole movie? Yeah pretty much. They should rename this movie, Wolverine and the X-men because that's what it is. And Jean? Pheonix? For real? Was that a huge giant fire-bird image in the water? Yep. Can't wait for X-3! 4 out of 5 stars.
X-men 3 is an action-packed thriller no matter what anyone sais. The action is non-stop from beginning to end. It's straight out X-men, juggernaut, Brotherhood of Mutants, police, and everybody else BRAWWLL!!That's what I'm talking about. Too bad they killed of punk-Cyclops in the very beginning. Singer took him and went to work on Superman and it's apparent that he is not very much into action-packed thrillers. Anyway, this is a must have. Halle yelled at the producers so they gave her a bigger role. Seriously. Anyway, although a depth of story isn't explored the action makes up for it ten-fold and I forgive them. Great scenes. Only one thing. Remember Pheonix. Well...the bird isn't there. How can you have a pheonix without the bird. Obviously they got this silly idea from Ultmate X-men comic books. Pheonix is not supposed to be a level of Jeans power. Pheonix is the bird, guardian of that crystal thingy from outer-space who comes and takes over jeans body and causes major problems for the x-men. But given my take on X-1 and X-2, I forgive them because this is much better. Truthfully, I would just get the third one if youve seen the previous ones already. 4 out of 5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Boredom looking for stardom ?.......2007-05-23

Intra galactical space travel with twisted plots, too long, too boring, too sleepy. Mediocre acting, missing plot continuity and light-years away from STAR WARS quality. If wasting time is not your goal, don't waste the money !!!!!

2 out of 5 stars It's the Duke, but remaster please!.......2007-05-03

We've been spoiled in this day and age. Mopst movies today found on DVDs, including John Wayne movies, have been digitally remastered and include bonus materials, pictures which are always good, subtitles and the like. Though I love the movies in general, the quality of the DVDs is not so good. The picture is not good on some, the subtitles are not there, the sound is not great, and it is not worthy of a DVD by today's standard. McClintock looked like they played it on a TV and recorded it with a camcorder! But what did I expect for the price?

4 out of 5 stars the old saturday afternoon at the movies kinda fun.......2007-05-03

I am 50 plus years of age and I remember the saturday afternoons at the movies. There was always a coming attraction (for the next week for the kids),a cartoon, a chapter serial,& two features. Usually one of the features was a western. These films of Mr. Wayne bring back memories when the good guys always wore white hats and bad guys always wore black hats, drank too much, and always lost the fight with the good guys. The good guys had a romantic interest in the heroine, but no mushy stuff
ever happened in these films, not for young eyes who always like action and no kissing face stuff! Only comment I have wrong about this collection of horse opera is that the first two films (the Dawn Rider and the Desert Trail)have some glinches in them as though they are old copies of them but the others are good copies in this 20 pack. Worth the price of 5.00 dollars in all.

3 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 5.6.......2007-04-18

The JOHN WAYNE 20 MOVIE PACK includes a bonus:
"The American West Of John Ford" was a made for TV documentary about the legendary filmmaker, with alternating host duties carried out by Wayne, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart. Filmed on-site at Monument Valley, it's easy to see the long-established camaraderie among these actors as they reminisced with their former director about his production company and days gone by. Ford was clearly looking frail and on the decline, which undoubtedly prompted this retrospective tribute.

The balance of the box set are films made prior to the Duke's breakthrough picture, 1939's "Stagecoach," his first collaboration with John Ford. These quickly-made three-reelers, once standard Saturday matinee fare, were often shown in pairs along with a serial chapter, a Three Stooges short and a few cartoons. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear...

The 1 to 10 score for JOHN WAYNE 20 MOVIE PACK was calculated from polling data obtained at a film resource website. Based on these figures, the current rating for this collection is: 5.6.

The following alphabetized program list includes individual poll scores, years of release and primary actors (besides Wayne).

When it was announced that Tom Cruise would play the vampire Lestat in this adaptation of Anne Rice's bestselling novel, even Rice chimed in with a highly publicized objection. The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made. --Jeff Shannon

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A true classic!!!.......2007-06-04

I just want to go on record and say, this is my favorite movie of all time! (Based on movies I have seen.) I saw this movie when it was first released back in 1994, and being as young as I was, I didn't understand it.

Flash foward to now. After buying and reading all of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, I was instantly heel-bent on getting my hands on a copy of this movie! I was able to watch it again, and I must say I believe this movie is a true work of art, and an instant classic.

The adaptation from the novel to the on-screen story is changed ever so slightly (omitting some parts as most book-to-movies often do) but keeps the whole thing flowing seemlessly together, while also maintaining the substance the viewer needs to fully appreciate the film.

The acting is beyond amazing. Many people called into question Tom Cruise playing the character of Lestat (I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan either) but I can honestly say he did an amazing job with such an important role. Having Brad Pitt play alongside Cruise as the character of Louie only caused Cruise to step his game up as well. Pitt was still fairly young in this movie and he shows a dark energy about him that gelled naturally with the movie.

Who can forget the young Kirsten Dunst, as the loveable and innocent Claudia! A break-out role for the (at the time) young star that propelled her to future A-list status. (What if Leelee Sobieski had gotten the part?) Dunst plays her role so well, you do actually forget that she is just a child in the movie! Add the incredible acting by Antonio Banderas, and you do have a young all-star cast!

The story itself remains true to the novel. A tale of lonliness, friendship, immortality, loss, grief, and acceptance. This movie never over-does the story to make it more "Hollywood," they just seem to let the movie take a course of its own and let the characters do the story-telling. This movie will leave you with many questions, as well as a feeling that everything is settled and the end course has been set.

This movie is well worth every penny you spend to rent or buy it. I whole-heartedly recommend this movie for any and all movie fans! A true 5-star classic.

    5 out of 5 stars I <3 Lestat! I <3 this movie!.......2007-06-01

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt dont suck in this movie so dont let them scre you off. Stays true to the book and characters. I really love Lestat but Rice is a ***** that sues her fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie That Introduced The World to the Modern Vampire.......2007-05-20

Anne Rice created the modern vampire with her novel, and the movie did it justice. Brad Pitt is definitely what makes the movie, he plays the role of the depressed vampire Louis perfectly. This the movie also has the very young Kirsten Dunst playing the role of Claudia, and she is an amazing actress for one her age at the time. The overall film is just perfect, from location to wardrobe, it feels like a trip through time. It's just a shame that the second movie wasn't as good as this movie. The movie "Interview With the Vampire" will go down in movie history as a classic and won't be forgotten any time soon if ever.

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-04-10

"Interview with the Vampire" is bar none, one of the best vampire films ever made. Based on the first novel in The Vampire Chronicles, by Anne Rice...Interview is directed by Oscar winner Neil Jordan ('The Crying Game') and scripted by Rice herself. I remember the first time I saw this movie, 6 years ago, and immediately reading the first book. Not only is it a great vampire film, but it's also a terrific literary adaptation. Rice only removed things from the novel that weren't completely necessary and, in doing so, created a brilliant, passionate script. The film stars Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, and Christian Slater. Seeing these names doesn't really shout "masterpiece." Incredibly, every actor is suited very well for their role.
The film opens in modern day New Orleans, where a vampire named Louis (Pitt) has agreed to give a reporter (Slater) an interview. The story then jumps back to the late 1700's, where Louis was a 24-year-old, suicidal plantation owner who had recently lost his wife and child in childbirth. His invitation to death is open to anyone, but it is Lestat (Cruise) who accepts his offer. Lestat kills Louis and, before he dies, offers him the chance to live forever. Louis accepts. This offer means that Louis will live forever and stay eternally youthful, but must stay away from sunlight and must feast on the blood of others. Unable to take the lives of humans (something Lestat does with ease), Louis begins feasting on rats and other animals; When Louis ends up taking the life of a young girl, Lestat turns her into a vampire and she becomes Claudia (Dunst), the daughter/lover of Louis and Lestat. Louis and Claudia become a kind of Romeo & Juliet type, but they remain complete opposites. Claudia is more like Lestat, deadly and cruel...Odd, since she hates Lestat. Jumping ahead a bit, Louis and Claudia eventually end up in Europe where they meet Armand (Banderas), the self-proclaimed "oldest living vampire" and head of a theatre troupe called The Theatre de Vampyre. I don't want to say much more about the plot to avoid spoilers. When Cruise was cast as Lestat, Rice publicly critisized the decision but later recanted her comments when she saw the film. On the DVD, in the bonus features, she rants about how good Cruise was. And he is incredible, this is one of his best performances. I've only read the first book (I'm currently reading "The Vampire Lestat"), but Cruise captures this character so well. He's charismatic, good-looking, but capable of being cruel and evil as well. Pitt delivers one of his best performances too as Louis. Louis is a complex character, who needs to a complex performance to really capture him. Pitt handled that completely; Watch his eyes throughout the film and watch how they go from young and youthful to world weary and sad. Dunst, who was thirteen when she made the film (I think), also delivers a spectacular performance. Since the character begins as a child and, by the end of the film, is still a child but with an adult mind; Dunst showed incredibly maturity in the role. Few child actors could have captured the emotion she did. I can not rave enough about this movie. Vampire/Dracula movies are the most cliched and overly used stories out there, but "Interview with the Vampire" is bursting with originality. It's not a horror film, despite it's subject matter. It's really a drama and much of Louis's story is heartbreaking. The gothic look that Jordan gave the film works very well to set the tone and atmosphere of the film. Even if you're a person who despises horror films or movies about vampires, I highly recommend this movie.

    GRADE: A

5 out of 5 stars An erotic vampire tale!.......2007-04-07

This is one of my all-time favorite vampire movies. The cast led by Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat, and Brad Pitt as the vampire Louis does an excellent job of bringing to life Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. The costumes and sets are evocative of the respective eras the vampires live through, and the cinematography is lush and sensual, evoking the decadent lifestyle that Lestat leads...even Kirsten Dunst has a role here as a child vampire, and her famous line "I want some more" has been rendered immortal in movie history. The chemistry between Lestat [Cruise] & Louis [Pitt] is believable and in fact, they give one of their best dramatic performances in this movie. All in all, a cinematic treat.

    Description

Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward star as two country handymen who lead a cast of zany characters to safety in this exciting sci-fi creature comedy. Just as Val McKee (Bacon) and Earl Basset (Ward) decide to leave Perfection, Nevada, strange rumblings prevent their departure. With the help of a shapely seismology student (Finn Carter), they discover their desolate town is infested with gigantic man-eating creatures that live below the ground. The race is on to overcome these slimy subterraneans and find a way to higher ground, in this enjoyable thriller co-starring Michael Gross and Reba McEntire.

They're back! The giant underground creatures that terrorized a desert town in Tremors are now plowing their way through Mexican oil fields, gobbling up everything and everyone around-and only one man can stop them! In the style of its predecessor, this comedy sci-fi creature feature reunites Fred Ward as down-on-his-luck Earl Basset and Michael Gross as gung-ho survivalist Burt Gummer, two desert desperados who take on the task of destroying the monsters. Partnered with them is Christopher Gartin, a young guy in need of kicks, cash, and a career change, and Helen Shaver, a sexy and intrepid scientist who's seen it all…until now. Together they devise an ingenious plan for tracking and killing the creatures. Tremors 2 is filled with high-speed action and plenty of laughs-until the predators wise up.

Those morphing, man-eating monsters are shaking things up again in the dusty little town of Perfection, Nevada - and survivalist Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) is the only solution to the latest in evolution! Aided by a couple of young local entrepreneurs (Shawn Christian and Susan Chuang), Burt pits his impressive knowledge of weaponry against the newest and deadliest generation of Graboids. If Burt and his new partners can't find a way to stop them, then the creatures that put Perfection on the map will wipe it right off the face of the earth. Tremors 3 promises earth-shaking, explosive, edge-of-your-seat entertainment.

Get ready to be shaken to your core by the all-new prequel to the original Tremors! When workers in a remote mining town of Rejection, Nevada, fall prey to an unseen creature, the mine's owner, Hiram Gummer (Michael Gross), great-grandfather to Tremors' Burt Gummer, hires a mercenary to destroy the carnivorous creatures before they swallow up his profits. What follows is an all-out assault that takes the battleground from deep in the earth to a suspense-filled showdown on the streets of Rejection! Tremors 4:The Legend Begins will thrill you with incredible action sequences, awesome bonus features and earth-shaking special effects created by the award-winning team behind the original box-office hit, Tremors.

    5 out of 5 stars Great value!.......2007-05-07

I've always been a fan of the Tremors series, and I had all the movies on VHS (well, except for #4). The VHS tapes are getting old, so I thought I would upgrade to DVD. This "Attack Pack" was a great value, and I recommend it to any Tremors fans.

    3 out of 5 stars Just Remember It's Only a Movie!.......2007-03-15

My nine year old grandson wanted "Tremors". We purchased the set for his 10th birthday coming up in April. I have seen two of the set on cable. I think he has seen them all. The one with Kevin Bacon was the best in my opinion. As I stated in the title just remember it's only a movie.

    4 out of 5 stars Great for sci-fi fans.......2007-02-13

This is a really good product, especially for the price. It's a good idea for sci-fi fans. When I got mine, one of the discs was defective, but returning it was no big deal. The second movie is definetly the best, then the first, then the third. The fourth one isn't something I'd pay money for, but it's okay in a box set.

5 out of 5 stars Silly, exciting fun.......2007-01-28

Part One, classic Bacon at his finest! Michael Gross and Reba McEntire join Bacon in turning a potentially stale monster flick into a roller coaster fun classic. Michael Gross, the constant in the series, throws his Keaton image to the wind to create a hilarious character in an ever-evolving arc of a fine mix of thrills, chills, drama, comedy, and wickedly good effects. The series perhaps would have been best left a trilogy, but the fourth installment, and following short-lived television show, proved a relatively simple idea, man against "nature," can take on a life of its own and never disappoint. Perhaps the most impressive? These are ridiculously 50's horror in nature, but timeless in entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars For My Son.......2007-01-12

My son wanted the Tremor movies and I was thrilled to find them all in one package.

    5 out of 5 stars On a bit of a different note.........2007-05-22

Not really going to talk about how "cheesy" some of these films are - "Drive-In Movie Classics" pretty much sums it up and that is what you get.

What I want to do is make a couple of comments about this package of movies that I think many of the other reviewers overlooked:

1 - The packaging of the discs - the package I got consisted of a box with 12 individual cardboard sleeves, each with a single DVD inside. Personally I like this as it seems to have kept the discs secure during shipment. I've bought other multi-disc sets and have never been that impressed with how they were shoe-horned into a single huge clam-shell case. Another thing that I like about the slim sleeves that these discs come in - it makes it really easy to drop one or two of these movies into the pockets of my laptop and/or my portable DVD player case. Also on the sleeves is a short description of each movie - in a very readable 12-pt font.

2 - The number of discs, there are twelve double-sided discs in this collection, with two movies on each side. Why do I think that is important? Mainly because I've bought other sets where a cheaper publisher crammed four movies onto each disc side so as to get 50 movies on five discs. To do that they had to greatly compress the videos which made them have a huge amount of artifacts and pixilation - making them almost unwatchable. The movies on this 12-disc set are of excellent quality, at least as good as possible considering the source material. While there appears to have been some defects in the prints used to make these DVDs (scratches and whatnot) there doesn't seem to be any noticeable additional problems introduced from overly compressing the films to get them on the discs.

This is the third set of videos from Mill Creek Entertainment that I've purchased; I also bought their "Hollywood Legends" and "Cartoon Classics" collections. I must say that I've been very pleased with all three sets and look forward to buying more of their collections.

    5 out of 5 stars 50 Drive-In Movies of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-04-27

Drive-In Movie Classics is a collection of 50 movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.

Anyways, here is how I rate the movies in Drive-In Movie Classics:

    Excellent:

    Absolution
    Horror of the Zombies
    Night Train to Terror
    Shock
    Snowbeast

    Great:

Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride
    Don't Look in the Basement

    Good:

    Firing Line, The

    Legacy of Blood
    Murder Mansion, The
    Prime Time
    Slave of the Cannibal God
    Spare Parts
    Trauma
    Women of Devil's Island

    Bad:

    Beast from Haunted Cave
    Black Hooker
    Breakout from Oppression
    Country Blue
    Death By Dialogue
    Fiend
    Guy from Harlem, The
    In Hot Pursuit

    Jive Turkey
    Katie's Passion

    Savage Weekend
    Throw Out the Anchor
    TNT Jackson
    Treasure of Tayopa
    Twister's Revenge
    Vengeance of the Zombies

Overall, a very good collection that is well worth your time and money.

3 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 4.1.......2007-04-14

Drive-in movies are an all but forgotten part of the teenage-dating ritual.

Once upon a time, on Friday and Saturday nights (weather permitting), kids everywhere would head out to their local drive-in theater, ostensibly to catch a double feature. The car would get parked in a somewhat elevated space and a tinny little speaker had to be hung on one of the two front seat windows. After lighting up a dashboard bug coil (to keep the mosquitoes away) then came the quick run to buy popcorn, french fries and Cokes. Finally, back in the car, we'd settle down and wait for the show to start.

When the snack bar commercial started running (usually right around dusk), we all knew that soon the fun would begin! The "Coming Attractions" and a cartoon were followed by the opening credits of the first film. That was the cue for most kids to stop watching that weathered outdoor screen, and begin to watch each other (and then some). In this fashion, we happily managed to ignore some of the strangest movies ever made.

The DRIVE-IN MOVIE CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK is the perfect way for those of us old enough to remember what we missed back then (and why!) to finally see exactly what was going on up there on the screen. (To the younger folks who may never have experienced a drive-in theater, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out what your future parents were doing on movie nights.)

4 out of 5 stars War Classics 50 Movie Collection Pack.......2007-05-07

The documentaries are great. The movie selections are far reaching, some real classics and some vague titles that leave a bit to be desired. All in all well worth your investment, and own a nice pack of war and war related movies.

The "classics" in the WAR CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK must surely be the many contemporary documentaries included in this set. These chronicles of a war in progress are both American and foreign made-- the most unusual for Western eyes being those from the USSR. The theatrical films included here aren't blockbusters by any means, yet they should still have appeal to fans of the war genre.

The 1 to 10 rating for this box set was determined by accumulated pollng data located at a film resource website. Based on these numbers, the current average score for WAR CLASSICS is: 6.4.

The alphabetized program list that follows includes individual poll scores, country of origin (if other than USA), year of release and principal actors.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth It.......2007-02-18

The documentaries are infinitely more interesting than the jingoistic, low budget and mostly rather bland soldier flicks. The subject is war in general but the vast majority of the docs and many of the fictional flicks are abt WW2 one way or the other. The docs are fascinating as the show WW2 propaganda as it really was during and just after the war. Kind of a peek behind the curtain at how Americans on the homefront really thought and were made to think during the world's greatest cataclysm.

    5 out of 5 stars Bandit Fan.......2007-05-18

I grew up with Smokey and the Bandit. Parents showed it to me along time ago. Always appealed to me for some reason. I love the First one. Never gets old. The second one is likeable. I didn't like the fact that the trailer was blue with the Bandit picture stuck on. The black rig and trailer were gone. The Third one I haven't even finished and I don't think I have ever seen it all the way through. But I wanted the set so this was the way to go. I like jerry's music and there is plenty of it in these movies.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to total a rating score on such a diversified pack........2007-05-14

This isn't like reviewing "The Omen" or "Die Hard" series that are now packaged as one volume as they are, for the most part, all decent flicks. The "Airport" films are widely, and I mean Grand Canyon widely, ranging in quality. Here are my reviews of each film in the package:

Airport (*****) - It probably didn't deserve the 10 Academy Award Nominations that it earned, including Best Picture, but it is an outstanding adaptation of Arthur Hailey's soap-opera trimmed novel on the airport business. His books were excellent in bringing to life various industries which were appropriately titled to reveal the industry being examined, such as "Hotel" (guess the business there), "Wheels" (on the automotive world), "The Moneychangers" (a personal favorite of mine on the banking industry), and "Overload" (on the public electric business) to name just a few of his many many works.

"Airport" successfully brings to life Hailey's classic novel and it, in spite of the soap-opera trappings and stereotypes, is rousing and memorable entertainment. The cast is brilliant with Burt Lancaster dead-on as the beleagured airport manager, Dean Martin perfectly cast as the arrogant and committment-phobic pilot, George Kennedy as Joe "Mr. Fix It" Petroni that he would play in all four "Airport" films, and Helen Hayes in the elderly stowaway role that won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress that year. All other supporting cast members are just as terrific.

This film is Intelligently written, skillfully directed, and brilliantly acted which make this a must-see and own classic. It is worth the price of the whole package just to have this one film.

Airport 1975 (***) - With the success of the original and the onslaught of disaster flicks in the 70's a sequel of sorts to the first Airport film was destined to happen. All and all, this one isn't as bad as it could have been. That cast is made up of mostly has-beens throwing ad-libs around and stereotyping America to the point that your teeth will ache, but there are some notable things about this film in spite of its obvious flaws. First, I love Charlton Heston and he became something of a stable item in disaster flicks in this era. His sturdy leadership is much needed in these kinds of films. He was great in "Earthquake" which was also in this era and where he again acted along side George Kennedy. I'm also a big big fan of Karen Black, a horror actress icon who is still around ("House of 1,000 Corpses") and still radiant looking, who plays the stewardess who ends up flying the 747 after it is hit by a single engine plane flown by Dana Andrews who suffers a heart attack while flying and goes off course.

The effects of the film are good, but nothing great and rather dated; however, I do love the scenes where they try the mid-air transfer of pilots and where the planes collide which leads to a wonderful line by George Kennedy, again playing Joe Patroni. When he's consulted/asked how bad the damage could be after such a hit by a single engine aircraft he responds in a sarcastic tone with, "Oh, it's not too bad. There's just a big hole where the pilots usually sit."

Overall, this film is fun entertainment, but nothing serious and certainly not up to the level of other great disaster flicks of this era such as "The Poseidon Adventure", which really started it all in 1972, "Earthquake", in wonderful sensesurround sound, and "The Towering Inferno" which was probably the best one of its genre. FYI: Earthquake and The Towering Inferno were once re-released and double-billed as "Shake and Bake" -LOL.

Airport 1977 (****) - This entry into the Airport series really soars. It got a lot of bad press, but the special effects are terrific and still hold up well enough even by today's standards. In addition, the script is actually intelligent and even clever at times. The actors are all familiar faces and do a very good job in this one. Jack Lemmon, who certainly over acts here, is the arrogant pilot who could use a lesson in anger managment, and the head stewardess isn't played by an actress as engaging as Karen Black, but Brenda Vaccaro is beautiful and her raspy-sexy voice keeps your attention. Christopher Lee (LOTR) is also perfect in this film with his confident and gentleman-like manners opposite his dispicable, vicious wife, played with great venom by Lee Grant. This is a really fun film in spite of the stereotypes and poor dialogue at times.

Airport 1979 (*) - This is the film that killed the franchise with it's terrible acting, awful and implausible script, horrific "special" effects, which is an oxymoron in this film, and unintentional humor which gave me reason to give it one star instead of zero stars. This film has fewer familiar faces than we are used to in such films, but that may be a good sign that most were intelligent enough to steer clear of this stinker. George Kennedy returns for his final playing of Joe Patroni who is to fly the maiden American flight of France's Concorde. Robert Wagner (The Towering Inferno) plays the heavy as the villain trying to bring down the plane after he finds out that his news reporter girlfriend, Susan Blakely (also of TI and a "Sport Illustrated Swimsuit" model), who is on the flight has the goods on him for illegal arms sales. Sounds like a perfectly good reason to kill a hundred people --NOT!

The whole film is just laughable and I do mean side-splittingly hysterical to the point where after its premiere audiences were left dying with laughter in their seats the film was actually re-marketed as a comedy-drama. Is it no surprise that the following year we got the sensationally funny "Airplane" which ripped apart the whole disaster film genre and not just the "Airport" films. "Airport '79" is one of those it's so bad, it's "kinda" good. If you don't believe me, just rent this stinker and enjoy a good laugh as you watch the Concorde do barrel rolls to avoid missles and have cutaways with the passengers flipping out in the interior. It is truly priceless.

    5 out of 5 stars I Love Airplane Diaster/Drama/Suspense flicks!.......2007-05-13

Call me (and millions of other moviegoers, pseudo-critics and connaisseurs) just declasse... but as Don Henley sang: "...It's Interesting when People Die..." (from the song "Dirty Laundry") ...so we are (I mean I am) transfixed by the adrenaline-pumping-plot-premise of this film genre including this series, also "Die Hard II: Die Harder", and more.... and to have *ALL* of the Airport-series films under one cover! What *WILL* they think of next?!!!

5 out of 5 stars pie in the sky.......2007-03-14

What a treat! An intrigueing disaster movie from the 70's! I highly recommend the Airport Terminal Pack, as it is filled with memorable characters creatively crafted by the film's writers, intertwined with excellent plots that will keep you engrossed for hours. Excellently written and acted - I give it 5 stars!
