DBZ hits rock bottom..........2007-02-06
The movies peaked with Brolly - Legendary Super Saiyan and have sharply declined in both story quality and action ever since. I only finished watching this film out of sheer morbid curiosity and was sorry I did so. This movie did not add to the series in any way, shape, or form. Yeah, I am aware that it is supposed to be funny, but they usually balance comedy with action, but this movie just stunk. Trunks and Goten are ok in small doses, but this was just too much. Fortunately there is a light at the end of the tunnel - Wrath of the Dragon is awsome (I have seen the Japanese version) and I look forward to them ending the US release of the series on a good note.
Not one of the better Z films.......2006-10-14
Bio-Broly
INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.
OVERVIEW:
This is the eleventh the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies.
THE STORY:
At the conclusion of the second Broly movie, he was killed. For good. But he was cloned. An old rival of Mr. Satan has cloned Broly to get revenge on his old rival for grudges they held against each other back in the old days. Just as Android 18 is about to sock it to Mr. Satan for not paying her the money he owes her, he is taken away for the Bio Warrior challenge. Goten, Trunks, and 18 follow - not knowing that what lies ahead is the return of one of their strongest foes.
REVIEW OF STORY:
Broly didn't need a sequel. He certainly didn't need two sequels. This is generally regarded as the worst of all the Dragon Ball Z movies. I am inclined to agree. While it has its moments, it was an unneeded sequel that should never have been made. Once again, with a focus on Goten and Trunks, it's more funny than serious. Don't bother with this one unless you want the complete Dragon Ball Z movie catalogue.
OFFICIAL?
Since the first Broly movie wasn't canon, his sequels are automatically fake. However, this movie and its predecessor could have taken place right around the time before the World Tournament prior to the arrival of Babidi took place. But for that to work, the first Broly movie would have to have taken place, which doesn't fit into the storyline at all. So ultimately I have to say this film isn't canon.
REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Some more recent DVDs have character profiles, though these are lacking and could have been written better. Why couldn't get get interviews with cast and crew, or trivia/facts, something like that? FUNimation has a lot of room to improve on the DVDs.
THE DUBBED VERSION:
Lots of people tend to bash FUNimation's dub of the Dragon Ball Z series? Why? It's inaccurate and sometimes just plain stupid. They can do good dubbed versions for plenty of other animes, such as Full Metal Alchemist, but every time they've tried dubbing Toriyama's classic, they butcher it to hell. The nu metal they put in as background music only further defiles the original series. Stick with the uncut subbed track.
OVERALL:
Overall this is a decent package, but not one of the better movies. Get it only if you want to see the continuation of the Broly story, or if you're a completist who wants all the Z movies.
EDITION NOTES:
All three Broly movies were reissued in a cheap, affordable three pack! Get the three pack, because you'll be getting three movies for the price of one!
Chould have been better.......2006-02-05
Dragon ball Z moives have always been full of action but I am sorry to say that this one is mostly comday. The moives is about when one of hercules old freinds Invites him to challenge some of his bio wriorrs.Meanwhile trunks and goten sneak along and try to see whants going on only to learn that he has truned broly into a bio!The thing that really made me mad was that the fighting only last for 15 minuits. But still the jokes are pretty funny but stick the orginal broly or broly 2.P.S.This is uncut so it's not sutible for all kids.
More like Boring-Broly.......2005-12-17
I am a fan of DBZ, I am a fan of Goten, I think Hercule is funny and I think #18 is hot. Yet this movie sucked! It was missing what makes DBZ so great: lots of action and a great plot. Broly is overused and this completely ruins him. Like most DBZ movies, it doesn't fit into the timeline. If we worked it in, then Goten and Trunks would only be a matter of hours away from using the Fusion technique. Had this movie taken place after then, the fight would be a lot more interesting.
In short, if you want to see every DBZ movie, then rent it. If you insist on collecting the whole series, wait until Movie Collection #4 comes out.
If it wasn't for the fact that this was supposed to be a comedy my score would be much lower.......2005-11-23
After the pathetic joke that was DBZ movie 10, and after hearing so much negative talk about this one, I was a bit worried. Needless to say, it's not as bad as I thought, and it definitely isn't nearly as bad as the last film. Still, it's not a movie for every DBZ fan. First, if you consider this to be one of the more serious. It's not. This film is pretty much a pure comedic one. Heck, the main characters are Goten and Trunks, so there's already a clue it's going to be more humor than anything else. The plot is also humor-based. Mr. Satan's jealous cousin blackmails him to visiting his island to face his warriors, or else he'll reveal embarassing secrets about his childhood to the world. Goten and Trunks tag along, pretty much for the heck of it, and 18 follows as well because she wants Mr. Satan to live up to his promise of paying her for throwing the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai. Unfortunately, Jaga Bada(said cousin) has a secret weapon: a clone of saiyajin powerhouse Broly. It turns out one of the movie 10 characters found whatever was left of him after the 10th film and gave it Bada. Thus, our selection of heroes definitely , especially since there's none of the usual DBZ heavyhitters around this time.
Not that it all works out, especially since it is more humor based(a reason I hated the first few arcs in original DB). Broly's clone, for example, starts out looking like the original, but for some incredibly stupid reason gets taken and turned into a sad rip-off of Swamp Thing. The way he's defeated is probably even worse than his new design. There's also a ton of pointless errors as well. For example, since when does Trunks know the Kamehameha? The number of errors like these(and there's a lot) pretty much leave this one as a rental at best.
Oh well, next year's when things get good, especially after 2005's letdown. 2006 will have both the Fusion movie with Janemba and Gogeta that's been spoiled over and over in the US DBZ video games, as well as my favorite film, Dragon Fist(the movie with Tapion). Just have patience, because soon we're finally going to see the proverbial cloud's silver lining.

Love it!.......2007-06-27
This movie is very funny, Owl is hilarious!
There's lot of adventure and humor, the movie is also well animated.
Oh, come on!.......2006-04-05
Come on, it's a good movie. Sure, Lord Malice is cookie-cuter to the extreme, but it's an animated children's fairy tale, what do you expect? I actually always thought that Malice was the most frightening of all of the Disney villians (even though this isn't Disney). I was dissapointed that the original seven dwarves were nowhere to be seen, but their female cousins are cute and likable enough, espescially Thunderella and Critterena. And I know everybody hates the music, but I actually thought it was pretty good, despite the cliched lyrics in some of the songs. And the Ed Anser-voiced owl Scowl was pretty funny. Overall this is a great movie and your kids will love it. Very underrated.
Who Cares?.......2005-04-03
The graphics aren't bad! I Tell you! The pictures great! This movie is great! Staring an all star cast! Such as Irene Cara! This movie I ordered from my public library then I returned it. But I came across it with different cover art! Ugh. Thats why I searched for original cover art. Wala! Found it!~Buy this movie! For 6.00!
1999.......2005-03-27
It was aproximatley 1999. The ocassional trip to the video store, to rent a couple shows to watch that night. This time there's nothing much to rent. 5 isles of garbage. We thought...
Then we came across this isle. We picked up this movie. Happily Ever After...Yeah whatever. We decided to take it. And what a good thing that was! It was the best show I have ever seen. Believe me when I say the best! Lord Maliss was a wonderful character...Snow white was very good! The Dwarfells rocked! And mother nature was an awesome edition to the show! Then all so quickly the seven days were up. Time to return the movies. And I never got to see that movie again...until now! 2004 Happily Ever After was released! With brand new cover art. But I don't like it as much as the old cover art. But anyway never juf=dge a movie by its cover. Snow white and the seven dwarves. Not better then Happily Ever After! Buy this! For 7.99 you can own the movie that I thought I would never see again! Buy at Wal-Mart or Best buy.
Good for kids.......2005-03-16
I've seen reviews saying this movie might be a little scary for younger kids, and that is possible; it depends on the child. However, when I was little, this movie was a favorite. The video rental store at the place I lived in between kindergarten and second grade had a copy of Happily Ever After and my younger sister and I were constantly renting it to watch it over again. Keep in mind, we were seven and four, at the oldest. Even when we went back for a visit a few years later, probably when I was nine or ten, we rented it from the same video store to watch it in the hotel and with my dad's friend's little girls, who also enjoyed it thoroughly. Kids don't care about bad music or bad animation or bad acting. And this is a kid's movie. I loved it as a child. I'm now 18 and ordering it again for nostalgia purposes as I prepare to graduate from high school. It's just that memorable to me.

NOT AS FUNNY AS BILLED. AND ALMOST NO ACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-08
I wish that I could write a really long review on this but I really didn't like it. It;s basically the same as project A except with limited action, stupid comedy, and a final fight scene that doesn't dissapoint because IT'S THE ONLY FREAKING ONE. The weird soccer game was pretty enjoyable, and the whole gun thing was very funny, but a major letdown overall.
THIS IS NOT "DRAGON LORD," THIS IS "DRAGON FIST".......2006-02-03
Okay listen up folks. Too many of you are posting reviews on this DVD that relate to Jackie Chan's "Dragon Lord." This is "Dragon Fist." This is a serious movie of Jackie Chan's with some violent choreography and some good stunts. This is about a young man named Yuan (Jackie Chan) who witnesses his champion master fight a challenger who is angry that he didn't get to compete in the martial arts competition. After Yuan witnesses his master get killed, he vows to his master's wife and daughter that he will train hard and avenge his death.
Three years later, Yuan, and the master's daughter and widow find the man who killed his master, but find out that the mutilated himself out of guilt for what he did. The mistress, and Yuan, forgive him. But other dangers lie ahead. The mistress gets very sick, and the leader of a local, ruthless, and powerful gang, named Wei, is the only one with the formula to cure it. He discovers Yuan fighting skills and uses him to help in his illegal killing and smuggling business. This ruthless gang is also at war with the clan under the man who killed Yuan's master.
So any other reviews that talk about a "funny" kung fu movie or a shuttle-cock game or a movie with little kung fu must be talking about "Dragon Lord." Dismiss these reviews immediately because they go to a different movie.
Although this disc is uncut, it is full-screen. And you can only have the original Mandarin audio or an English dubbed version without any subtitles whatsoever. The only DVD out there that contains this movie in it's original widescreen aspect ratio is the Columbia Tristar version, but that movie is cut by 20 minutes or so. This Simitar version is uncut. Avoid the Beverly Wilshire version at all costs. That version has horrible quality, and above all, they say it's "widescreen," but what they actually did was take a full-screen version of "Dragon Fist" and they cut off the top and bottom to make it look like a "widescreen" picture. You are better off with this Simitar version or the Columbia Tristar version.
Dragon Lord : Don't be confused, This is a good film........2001-08-10
Dragon Lord is the first good Jackie Chan film. All the elements of a classic Jackie Chan film came together in this film for the first time: 1) The well-trained but clumsy underdog hero whose adolescent tendencies get him into big trouble. 2) The use of almost cartoonish humor, blended with spectacular, sometimes death defying stunt work 3)sometimes brutal hand to hand fights with a bare minimum of bone breaking sound effects or blood.
This was only the second film Jackie directed. His first was Young Master and that film established Jackie as the martial arts Buster Keaton. However that film could not break out of the utterly formulaic restrictions the martial arts film and producers insisted upon.
Dragon Lord does change the formula and drastically. It also was not a box office success in Hong Kong and Jackie would work with his friends and Sammo (and fufill his contractual obligation to appear in the dreadful Cannonball Run 2 in 1983) before directing his first full-fledged Chan-masterpiece Project A in 1984. Dragon Lord was originally conceived as a sequel to Young Master, to be called Young Master in Love. But continuity did not allow the film to be an official sequel. It was first released (barely) to the U.S. as The Dragon Strikes in 1982. At this point in his career, Jackie knew he was not going to follow in the footsteps and be the new Bruce Lee for producer director Lo Wei. He had other things in mind and almost got what he was after with Dragon Lord.
For nearly the entire first hour of Dragon Lord , Dragon (Chan) and his best friend Cowboy (Mars) vie for the attentions of a young woman who's name we later learn is Sexxy. We are treated to an incredible display of stunt work in a opening title sequence of a Football game (not soccer) , Chinese Style. Forget about protective gear or the refs calling anyone for unnecessary roughness. 90 stunt people received minor injuries and Jackie hurt his chin so bad he was in pain when he tried to talk .
Later Cowboy and Dragon run into a field of tall grass after a pheasant and meet a desperate man trying to hide from some thugs. The thugs start to rough up Cowboy and Dragon but realize they are just kids and not connected to the man they want.
Dragon, sneaks out of his house and gets away from his studies to try and meet the young woman of his dreams but runs into his best friend and rival Cowboy. Cowboy seems to take the upper hand with a dirty trick performed in front of Dragon's father. But Dragon gets another opportunity and he has a plan. The plan involves staging an attack so that supposedly Cowboy can be a hero, but instead it's Dragon that is about to become a hero. Tempers flare however and Cowboy and Dragon fight and it becomes clear the attack was staged. The girl is not impressed and Cowboy and Dragon get into trouble and stop being friends.
Eventually the two friends make up and compete in a Chinese shuttlecck match which is played like soccer only instead of a ball the players use a shuttlecck )without rackets keeping it off the ground and moving it around without using their hands). The nearly fifteen minute sequence involving the playing of this game is a highlight of physical dexterity and stunt work. Picture the best hacky-sack players you have ever seen , now add non-stop acrobatics to the mix. Wow.
Next Dragon tries to send a note to the girl Sexxy. The kite carrying the note blows in the wrong direction and Dragon goes to retrieve it. He finds himself on a roof top and there is a top secret illegal smuggling operation going on below him. Men with spears try to get him and they almost succeed. Smugglers are stealing Ming Vases to ship out of the country illegally.
Dragon's father gives Dragon a test on his studies, and in another comic slapstick sequence Dragon manages to cheat himself through his father's examination.
This eventually all leads to a show-down with the thugs and smugglers for Cowboy and Dragon and the incredible 20 minute fight sequence finale of the film. A fight sequence which is full of all of the best of Jackie's trademark moves and humor, with only the barest minimum of any wire work or trickery. It's pure Jackie acrobatics for 20 minutes straight and a must see for all Jackie fans. He would re-stage and upgrade the fight slightly (with different characters) to end the Hong Kong film version of The Protector (the American version of this film with Danny Aielo is to be avoided except for the curious to compare it to the superior Hong Kong version of the film which Jackie re-edited and directed additional martial arts sequences for -including a new ending).
Dragon Lord doesn't represent Jackie's finest (look to Drunken Master 2 aka Legend of the Drunken Master and Project A part 2 for that). The first hour of the film feels too light and episodic. The use of music punctuates sequences in much the same way cartoon music is used. The sports sequences are knock-outs but they feel disconnected from the narrative of the film. It isn't until the final 40 minutes the film seems to come together when it generates a little bit of suspense and then delivers the knock out final fight sequence. Chan's direction and choreography though a bit repetitious after a while is impressive.
If you like Jackie Chan at all, put this one on your must see list and if your thinking maybe you'll buy it.. it's worth having!

Big Budget film does so-so on the Asian Market........2001-04-15
This film was originally going to be the sequel to Jackie Chan's blockbuster hit "Young Master" and carry the title "Young Master in Love", however, during the making of this film the plot changed from having connection to the original so the title "Dragon Lord" was given. This film was given the title Dragon Strike though because it is the English dubbed version. Jackie has many scenes, which actually included no gung fu at all and were taking place inside a sports arena. Some 50-200 shots were taken on a hackiack scene! Jackie ends up accidentally finding a gangs secret hideout and discovers a smuggling plot to illegally export Chinese artifacts. This film does have a few good fight scenes and is the first of his modern Hong Kong films. It also stars the famous Yuen Biao, which is a happy side note. Not a bad film for the martial arts/Hong Kong film viewer. Also a good pick for Chan fans. All together, Dragon Strike is a film worth owning.
Uneven, but still entertaining.......2000-07-08
Dragon Lord is an interesting early directorial attempt by a very young Jackie Chan. It bounces back and forth between some strange sports and an actual story involving friends and girl chasing. Some times it's good, sometimes it drags. For me, the sporting events went on too long, although the bun pyramid race was an interesting depiction of a Chinese custom. I really enjoyed the story on this one, because the friendship between Jackie and his freind "Cowboy" was very charming, and I enjoyed their boyish pranks trying to woo a girl away from each other. The bigger plot is similar to "Drunken Master 2", with theives plotting to smuggle precious artifacts out of China -- a subject Jackie obviously feels strongly about, since it occurs again in "Rush Hour". It has a couple of exciting fights, and lots of athletic clowning which I enjoyed just as much as the fights.

The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie was released in 1991 under the title This Is the Super Saiya-jin, Son Goku. Goku and Krillin use their powers to deflect a giant asteroid from striking the Earth. But the asteroid is really the ship of the evil Lord Slug, who bullies Gohan and Bulma to get the Dragon Balls and obtain the eternal youth he desires. The newly regenerated Slug begins to "terrafreeze" Earth, killing inhabitants and transforming the planet into a gargantuan space vessel. During their inevitable duel, Goku learns that the now-gigantic Lord Slug is the last member of a race of "super Namek-jins." Goku eventually defeats him with some help from Gohan and Piccolo. For the U.S. release, Funimation has added an intrusive rock soundtrack--and five minutes of obnoxious commercials at the beginning of the tape. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Considerable cartoon violence, drug use. --Charles Solomon
