4 out of 5 stars First One is the Best.......2004-08-05

Sonny Chiba's "The Street Fighter" was once notorious for being the first movie to get a (now defunct) "X" rating for violence, and "Street Fighter" is indeed a violent film. A bright red blood gushes everywhere, heads are cracked open, throats ripped out, and, in an incredible instance, a reproductive organ is ripped off. Add this hideous violence to a macho performance by Chiba and some decent fight choreography and you get a very fun 70s karate movie.
"Street Fighter's Last Revenge" sees Chiba's character becoming more of a James Bond type. There's even a romantic sub plot! This entry, however, isn't as enjoyable as the first one. "Sister Street Fighter" is a downright abomination, and Chiba doesn't even play the same Terry Tsuguri character!
The triple feature DVD from Vintage (which ignores the first sequel, "Return of the Streetfighter") has all three movies in 2.35:1 widescreen. They are all quite watcheable, with the first one looking the best. A biography of Sonny Chiba is included. I've seen a version of the same disc with an extra cardboard package with film and Sonny Chiba facts.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry, but this sister is NO streetfighter!.......2007-04-29

Sue Shiomi tries her best and does a half-decent job, but the screen only really sparks into life when Mr. Streetfighter himself swaggers on and starts some serious buttkicking. Unfortunately, this is all too seldom. To make up for that there are a selection of weapons fights on offer, Sai, Tonfa, Nunchaku, but most of these are wasted - whether my copy was cut, I don't know - with only the nunchaku getting a decent showing.

As one of the other reviews mentioned there does seem to be more than just a polite nod to Enter the Dragon in parts of this movie. Not that that's a bad thing, but don't come to this expecting anything like Bruce Lee's masterpiece.

It's a pleasant way to spend 90 minutes, but really it's nothing that special.

4 out of 5 stars Babyfaced Cutie Slaughters Every Goon in Sight.......2006-01-30

Connoisseurs of old-school karate flicks will be hard pressed to find a female action star who is as much fun to watch as Etsuko "Sue" Shiomi. Of course there are others with better abilities in both martial arts and acting, such as the great Michelle Yeoh, but Shiomi certainly combined seriously chopsocky buttkickin' action skills with heart and adorability. Shiomi was just 19 years old or so when this movie was filmed back in the mid-70s, and not only is she a real cutie, but she can also kill you with her bare hands. This movie has a pretty typical karate flick plot, as main character Tina (Shiomi) infiltrates a gang of drug runners who have imprisoned her brother, and leaves big piles of bleeding goons in her wake. Shiomi isn't a very good actress to be sure – her dialogue mostly consists of yelling and you could count all of her facial expressions on one hand, though she at least looks like she feels bad after kicking a guy down the stairs or embedding a spike in another guy's skull.

This movie is also worth tracking down for anyone who loves old karate flicks that are just so bad they're good. We get a heaping helping of fight scenes showcasing a variety of martial arts styles and weapons. And it just keeps getting more fun – with bizarrities like an elite force of fighters who wear baskets on their heads and get beaten by a ballerina, and a troop of Thai kickboxing teenage chicks who for some reason are dressed up like Pebbles Flintstone. (YabbaDabbaDoo!) Not to mention the high-priced gangsters who keep getting whomped by a single young cutie pie. Why doesn't the big boss just fire all these idiots already? And on a historical note, there is evidence that Quentin Tarrantino is hip to this film, and some fans of the genre are speculating that Sue Shiomi was the direct inspiration for Uma Thurman's character in "Kill Bill." You will really like Sue Shiomi as an action star after catching this flick, so track this lost gem down if you can. [~doomsdayer520~]

4 out of 5 stars Fist and Beauty.......2004-12-23

I think the idea of this movie is to mimic Enter The Dragon while
showcasing the star Etsuko Shiomi, in that respect it was a
success, It helped that Etsuko Shiomi is a real karate fighter
in real life, few will remember that she once issued a challenge
to a chinese actress who also portrayed tough girl roles, It was
suppose to be full contact, needless to say the chinese girl
declined, such was the reputation of Shiomi in her heydays,
I wonder where she is now. If you like Kill Bill or Azumi, you
won't be disappointed in this movie specially as the star here
has real fighting talent. I could have rated this 5 stars but
the transfer to DVD could have been better.

4 out of 5 stars Another karate exploitation classic.......2006-10-22

Once again, Chiba gets a job to do from the mob. This time not to break somebody out but to kill somebody in prison! This is probably the best part of the mvoei but it has a ton of other great moments. So just like the original Streetfighter the mob thinks that Chiba knows too much and is after him. So the guy who had his throat ripped out by Chiba in the first movie is back to take him down. While the karate isn't quite as good as the first it is still very good at moments and it has just as much blood. Overall a great sequel.

There is an utra cheap DVD set out called Martial Arts Masters with Street Fighter, Revenge of the Street Fighter, and Sister Street Fighter on it with a VERY nice perfectly letterboxed remastered picture. There are really no flaws on it. It is distributed by St. Clair Vision and I got it for 2.99 at the used store! More than worth the buy and it has Bruce Lee's first movie on it and Shogun's Ninja. Though only the Streetfighter movies are remastered.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful stuff! .......2007-04-29

No, this is not that Van Damme garbage, but brutal, action-packed, 1970s Japanese martial arts at its best. Sonny Chiba never had the charisma or fighting skills of Bruce Lee, but then he never pretended he did. He delivered something totally different - gritty, dirty violence; no posturing; bucketfulls of blood. As usual with Eastern movies, particularly of this time period, there's little by way of plot, so what gives this an edge is that Chiba's character is VERY unlikeable. So why root for him? Because he dispatches even more unlikeable characters in some very gruesome ways. He's your typical anti-hero.

So, if you like low plot, high violence movies (and you're curious why Tarantino was so desperate to get Chiba in Kill Bill), take a look at this flick - it really is cool!

4 out of 5 stars My karate is better than yours!.......2006-10-22

The Streetfighter is one of the most diffrerent movies you will ever see. Sonny Chiba plays one bad dude who is hired to break someone out of prison. When he doesn't get his money you find out that Chiba is not one to screw around. He is one of the most unique characters in movie history. It all comes down to the final fight but the best part of the movie is obviously the showdown with the fat karate guy. When Chiba is getting whooped on the fat man lets up and starts to ask him if his dad was this great karate master that he used to know, but Chiba thinks back to his father telling him "to be a #1 man, never be beat by anybody"! So right when the fat guy was going to try and help Chiba, Chiba instead gets up and smashes him. It is a scene that puzzles me every time I see it and is one of the most fascinating moments in cinema that I have ever seen for some strange reason.

So the finale is super gory and very fun, just like the entire movie.

3 out of 5 stars False Advertising Again.......2007-01-19

Great movie, terrible film to dvd transfer and not subtitled as listed.

3 out of 5 stars Shihomi Etsuko Bloodbath.......2003-08-04

This was the first in a series of movies that went under the title of "Onna hissatsu-ken," or "Lethal Fist of the Woman," intended to showcase the talents of Shihomi Etsuko, a female Japanese martial artist trained in Shaolin Kenpo. It is not a Sonny Chiba film, and as other reviewers have pointed out, he only has a small part.

That said, the movie is best enjoyed on its own campy terms. It takes itself perfectly seriously, although it's nothing more than a pastiche of elements swiped from contemporary Hong Kong films-- and pretty much every villain tries his level best to imitate Bruce Lee's deadpan fighting style. In true Japan style, however, the fights are over the top, extremely bloody, and sometimes just ridiculous. In short, it's hilarious. The fights get more and more brutal (and laughable) as the day-glo blood pours. This movie is sure to satisfy those looking for surreal, cheesy fun, but certainly won't appeal to people looking for a high-quality martial arts film. I really enjoy watching the star, since she always manages to appear so sincere in her roles and isn't a bad martial artist. Sadly, her talents were squandered in increasingly formulaic and silly movies.

Please note that I can't vouch for the quality of this release, since I've only seen the Japanese original.

1 out of 5 stars WHY DID THEY REDUCE CHIBA TO CAMEOS FOR THIS GIRL?.......2003-07-27

THIS GIRL CAN FIGHT, BUT FIRST OF ALL, WHY DID THEY SHORTEN CHIBA'S PRESENCE TO A CAMEO JUST TO DEVOTE A MOVIE TO A GIRL WHO CAN'T HOLD HER OWN AGAINST HALF THE MEN IN THE MARTIAL ARTS INDUSTRY? HERE'S THE WACK PLOT; A COP DISSAPEARS WHILE TRYING TO BUST A MAJOR DRUG CARTEL, AND IT'S UP TO HIS SISTER TO FIND HIM. DON'T BE FOOLED. DESPITE THE PRESENCE OF SONNY CHIBA'S PICTURE ON THE COVER, CHIBA VERY SELDOMLY APPEARS IN THIS ONE. LET'S FACE IT, THIS ONE RUINED WHAT COULD'VE BEEN A BETTER SERIES OF SEQUELS. NOW REALLY, I FIND IT STUPID THAT THIS GIRL CAN FIGHT HER WAY THROUGH ALL THESE MEN LIKE IT'S ALMOST NOTHING. THE FILMMAKERS REALLY SHOULD'VE THOUGHT LONG AND HARD BEFORE THEY DECIDED TO REPLACE SONNY CHIBA AS THE STAR FOR THIS LAME GIRL. HOPEFULLY, THEY WOULD LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES BY THE TIME ''THE STREET FIGHTER'S LAST REVENGE'' WAS RELEASED.

4 out of 5 stars 70s Chop Socky at its GREATEST.......2003-07-07

Martial arts film is a beautiful genre. Seagal, Van Damme, they've ruined it, made it into the "action movie", which [is bad].

Sister Street Fighter is a VERY good 70s martial arts film, starring Sue Shiomi. It is very stylish, with good cinematography, and well-choreographed fight scenes. This is some of the last and greatest kung-fu filmmaking. Sonny Chiba has about 3 fight scenes (he is not the star), all of which rock. Your basic kidnap/revenge plot... there are FIGHTING AMAZONS...!!!! Not a waste of money, despite what that narcoleptic guy said.

    2 out of 5 stars BORING!!.......2003-05-24

Well, honestly I fell asleep about half way thru the movie. It was given to me as a present so I didn't waste my money. You are better of buying something else. This was the first time I've seen a Sonny Chiba movie, and I was not impressed.
