Amazon.com essential video

A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox's Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honor prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there's a "latticework of coincidence" (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s--just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the '70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars So weird, eighties weird........2007-05-16

I bought this movie because it was inexpensive and, randomly, one of the lecturers in my bar exam review course mentioned it in his video lecture. He didn't know how to describe it, but claimed it reminded him of a some of the repo guys he'd met as a property lawyer. I don't really know how to describe it, either. It's sort of "Big Lebowski," but set in the eighties and with less drugs. The characters are all pretty messed up without drugs. It is surreal, and very random. You should give up on the plot and just enjoy the scenes as they come. The plot, such as it is, will work itself out. This is not a movie for people who need to understand things, who need everything to make sense. When I first watched it, I was strung out from studying for two months and didn't want to think any more. For me, it was perfect. Weird, ridiculous, and amusing. If you approach it with a similar attitude, I'll think you'll enjoy. :)

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Alex Cox's Best- Emilio Estevez's, too.......2007-04-19

This movie is truly amazing. It holds up to repeated viewing and I should know, because I've been watching it repeatedly since I bought it around ten years ago. You can just go on and on about the mountainous high points this film has, from Harry Dean Stanton, the western style camera work Alex Cox would later revisit in Straight to Hell, the crackpot philosophizing, the nonsensical alien conspiracy and ensuing government conspiracy, Rev. Larry, the cartoonish punk thugs, seedy Los Angeles, and some other little things like the dialogues ("I installed two ways mirrors in his place in Brentwood"), acting (everyone essentially "disappears into their character"- even the guy from Conan the Destroyer), and the plot.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy release of a CLASSIC.......2007-04-11

I'm not going to try to sell you on this movie, if you don't get why it's a classic, I can't be bothered to try to explain it to you. If you know and love this movie, this release is worth the price - it looks good, the commentary track is lots of fun.

4 out of 5 stars Irradiated.......2007-03-09

When I first saw this movie about 20 years ago I didn't know what to make of it. I was about thirty then. I still don't know, but I do know it has enough merit as a SciFi movie to deserve at least a rental. For someone to associate this as sexist, cruel, sadistic, unholy, or any other negative societal connotation is certainly understandable. It is probably those things because it was meant to be. I doubt saying Hannibal Lechter was a cannibal would surprise the author or director of "Silence of the Lambs". So trying to equate displays of anti-feminist, anti-christian, or anti-social behavior with intelligence is rather moot. The movie is what it is. You will love it or hate it probably. Imagine crossing "Reservoir Dogs" with "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" or "Raising Arizona" with "Snatch" and you begin to understand. You can't fit it in your genre specific box. So if you are open to sub-cultural wacky movies, you may be entertained.

1 out of 5 stars lobotomy.......2007-03-04

This is about the worst movie I've ever seen, and I've seen it twice (just to make sure).
Although I've seen it twice, I can't really tell you what it's about because it is too boring and idiotic to follow. But it was clearly made for people who think that juvenile behavior is "cool".

If you think that men who treat women in an insulting manner are "cool" (and there are a lot of you out there), then you might like this movie.
But if you are a thoughtful and intelligent person, this movie is a waste of time. You've been warned.

5 out of 5 stars Best Wrestling DVD ever?.......2007-06-12

Now I don' really know what I was expecting when I purchased this DVD, but I know that I ended up with the best wrestling DVD I have ever bought. Wrestling with Shadows was #1 but it is now a distant #2.

I have purchased many tapes and DVDs over the years, mostly "classics" and have never been in a big hurry to put money into the WWE's hands. A year or two ago I relented and bought "The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection". That had been the only other DVD I have based on a single wrestler (beside WWS mentioned above) and as a result my only point of comparison. There is NO comparing this DVD with the Ric Flair DVD. Flair's DVD is just matches and TV interviews. I do like the Flair DVD but my respect for Flair has decreased more and more as I hear more about him.

Disc #1 contains a fantastic 2-hour synopsis of Bret's career. It covers his days in Stampede to his introduction into the WWF and eventually WCW and his career ending concussion. We learn more about the mule kick from Goldberg, Shawn Michaels telling Bret to get out of his ring, the ineptitude of WCW, and of course Owen.

Being that this is a WWE video, Montreal is covered but only lightly, and does not tell the true story of why Bret left WWE. Watch WWS to see it unfolding in real time.

There are lots of interviews with Bret, Vince, Shane, Mick Foley, Chris Benoit, Edge, Christian, Roddy Pipper (wow, I had no idea Bret was the first to pin him cleanly) and many many others. The interviews with Bret are post-stroke and at times are very emotional. There appears to be the beginning of reconciliation based on Bret and Vince's comments. It's interesting too because Bret comments that his favorite matches are mostly one's in which he lost. And after viewing all of the matches in the set, I have to agree.

Disc #2 and Disc #3 contains lots of really good matches including his fantastic tribute match with Chris Benoit. But I have to admit, I will be watching Disc #1 over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Household Favorite................2007-05-31

I never would of thought that WWE would ever even consider putting out A Bret Hart dvd. Because Of the bad blood between Vince And Bret which all started at Survivor series 1997. (It Was Vince's fault may I add!) Anyway I'm glad Bret chose to set their differences aside in order to make this dvd. The documentary was a real treat. Learning about Stu Hart's Dungeon,Owen Harts death, And his sad last run working with WCW. In a few occasions in the dvd It looked like Bret Hart was going to cry, but held back in some degree. I really feel sorry for Bret for losing Owen, It must of been awful. I enjoyed watching all the great bonus matches as well. What was even better was that Bret hand picked all these matches himself. I will always be a fan of Bret. It's no joke when he says he's the best there is, the best there was, & the best there ever will be!

4 out of 5 stars Simply Superb.......2007-05-06

Hitman Hart has always been my favourite wrestler. There's this ceasing intensity on his face. He is or rather was a very good friend of Vincent McMahon, atleast that's what this dvd shows. In this documentary movie, the direction simply blows you away. Hitman Hart's career is shown in videos ranging from his high school years up until the time he appeared for the first time in WWF and later, when he joined WCW and all those matches with Shawn Michaels we all loved to watch as children. To see him grown from above average amateur to a world leader at entertainment wrestling is very inspiring. His music, his dark side, his Shawn Michael, his Steve Austin hatred, his ladder matches, his tag team matches, his brother's career and his departure from wrestling is all showcased in a way one won't forget. If you have been a fan of his, I suggest you shouldn't think twice before giving this DVD a try. It is quite "grown up" and doesn't really show you 'please don't try this at home' adverts. So long. I wonder if there is a similar doc made for Shawn Michaels and sundry. If not, producers - what are you waiting for?

I love Bret Hart.He was always one of my favorite wrestlers.I thought he had a lot of natural skill that a lot of wrestlers didnt posess just coming from an family of 12 in Calgary Alberta Canada and his dad being the legendary Stu Hart you knew he would be great!Now their are a lot of biased opinions toward Bret people may feel differently than me and Im open to everyones views and opinions and Im not one to bash other people because of how they feel.Thats their view so thats their view.The only thing I seen wrong with the dvd was some of the matches.I felt Bret could of put in more classics or more of his famous matches dont get me wrong they were good matches I guess that he liked but not the fans or at least me.Here are some I wouldnt of minded watching again;

The Hart Foundation vs Demolition @ SummerSlam 1988 for the Tag Team Titles

The Hart Foundation vs Demoilition @ SummerSlam 1990 in an 2/3 falls match for the Tag Team Titles

Bret Hart vs Rowdy Roddy Piper @ Wrestlemania 8/1992 for the IC Title

Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels @ Survivor Series 1992 for the WWE Title

Bret Hart vs Razor Ramon @ the 1993 Royal Rumble for the WWE Title

Bret Hart vs Bam Bam Bigelow in the 1993 King of the Ring Finals

Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler @ SummerSlam 1993

Bret Hart/Owen Hart/Keith Hart/Bruce Hart(The Hart Family)vs Shawn Michaels and The Red Knight,The Black Knight,The Blue Knight

Bret Hart vs Bob Backlund @ Survivor Series 1994 in an "Submission Match" for the WWE Title

Bret Hart vs Stone Cold @ Survivor Series 1996

Bret Hart/Owen Hart/Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart/Davey Boy Smith/Brian Pillman(The Hart Foundation)vs Stone Cold,Ken Shamrock,Goldust,and The Road Warriors @ Canadian Stampede aka Maximum Impact 1997

Bret Hart vs The Undertaker @ SummerSlam 1997 w/Shawn Michaels as the special referee for the WWE Title

And probably for closure Bret vs Michaels from Survivor Series 1997 known as "The Montreal Screwjob" for the WWE Title but theirs no way Bret would have wanted that on his dvd so you cant really blame him but from an fans standpoint it would have been nice to see that match again for historical reasons oh well.*****Funny when Bret spit on Vince.

5 out of 5 stars Very good DVD for ECW lovers.......2007-04-22

You must see "Forever Hardcore" if you liked this DVD. Unfortunately, Vince owns all the ECW footage, so they can't show clips of their stories. But it fills you in on a lot this DVD couldn't tell you!

5 out of 5 stars Highly insightful documentary into the history of the most extreme franchise of the 90s.......2006-12-26

Where WWF (now WWE) and WCW dared not go, ECW was there. Disqualification was a thing unheard of in ECW matches, and cheesy fake-punching and fake-kicking (called "pillowstrikes" in the wrestling business) are in the sharp minority of wrestling moves, and blood is shed frequently.

I was too young to ever know ECW beyond the mentions of it on the internet and WWF (which I watched a lot back in 2000, 2001, 2002, and now again in 2005, 2006 and beyond), but this DVD does an incredible job of telling the epic story of ECW and its top wrestlers without dragging behind or missing a beat.

It literally chronicles ECW from its rise as Eastern Championship Wrestling as part of the NWA, to the influence of Paul Heyman, who helped cause it to be nicknamed Extreme Championship Wrestling, and eventually broke away and became officially Extreme Championship Wrestling. They struggled for many years, never having a pay-per-view event until very later on, and having only regional TV access, never syndication until 2000-2001

The story leaves out nothing of importance in telling of the ECW, even dedicating a portion of the documentary to the fans, who were entirely responsible for ECW's mild success, even telling of the loyal fans who went to nearly every show (including one the wrestlers called Hatman because he always wore a straw hat in the front row), bringing their own weapons (from frying pans to boat oars), holding their chairs up for wrestlers to throw other wrestlers onto, and even catching wrestlers that are thrown at them (Spike Dudley for one, being crowd-surfed around the small arena before returned safely to the ring)

The major superstars even have their own segments dedicated to telling their stories in the ring, going from ECW originals like Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Sandman, Tazz, Sabu, Shane Douglas, etc, to people better known for their WWF/WWE exploits, such as Steve Austin (later Stone Cold), Cactus Jack, The Radicalz (Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero), Rey Mysterio, The Dudley Boys.

The people recounting the stories in the documentary are nearly all the people who were involved with ECW, from the producers, executives and creative assistants, to the wrestlers themselves, Tommy Dreamer, Mick Foley, Chris Benoit, Rob Van Dam, Tazz, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, even Jerry Lawler (who had a feud with Tommy Dreamer and most all of ECW in 1997), Vince McMahon, Eric Bischoff, and Paul Heyman.

Paul Heyman is without a doubt the most insightful star of these interviews, as he is a great storyteller, with a powerfully emotionally charged voice that grabs your attention and keeps you listening, imitating wrestler's voices (such as Steve Austin and Terry Funk) without a hint of rancor, being as rambunctious and lewd as he can (such as saying in indirect response to Eric Bischoff saying he didn't "raid" ECW and steal its superstars, "Eric Bischoff is full of ****" or else something to similar effect)

Towards the end, you learn via footage and interviews of what began to bring down ECW. You hear first-hand from people like Tazz and Spike Dudley and others of the financial troubles with ECW which saw many wrestlers such as Bam Bam Bigelow leave to WCW for better pay, and other stay on by sheer loyalty to Paul, who commanded their loyalty and respect with loyalty and respect of his own to them, and who went without pay for weeks, even months at a time, just so ECW could continue to thrive. You learn how Paul nearly worked himself to death, working, as one wrestler (I forget who) says Paul worked 20 hours a day for ECW. It tells of the betrayal of one of ECW's original founders, courting ECW wrestlers to get them sold to WCW and WWF, and Paul forcing him to resign from his post.

At the very end, you see a very gritty piece of footage of Paul Heyman from 2001 on his ECW show, criticizing the network that finally put them on syndicated air (TNN, now Spike TV) claiming very loudly and shockingly, that TNN did not spend a penny in advertising ECW; no commercials, no advertisements, no press releases, absolutely nothing, and they even wrote in their contract that ECW could not seek a different network while they were under contract with TNN, while TNN subtly sought to buy WWF Raw is War from USA Network (which they eventually did in late 2001, and kicked ECW off the air, effectively killing it once and for all).

The documentary is well worth the money in itself, providing well edited clips of fierce matches, going into very dense detail of the history of the business, from its very rise, down to its fall and the migration of many ECW stars to WWF (as WCW had been bought out by WWF in mid 2001), with even a very touching piece of footage taken from the first monday night RAW when Paul becomes commentator with Jim Ross, where J.R. comforts Paul in a very mentorly way, telling him to keep his chin up, he'll be okay, etc.

As an added bonus to the entire thing, we get an extra DVD packed with some memorable ECW matches, chosen apparently for their greatness and impact, rather than their bloodiness. While there are still bloody and hardcore matches (obviously) some of them are of the more basic, physical kind devoid of blood, such as the ones with Tazz, and the luchadores Psycosis and Rey Mysterio

All in all, it was well worth the money, and works highly effectively in introducing newbies to ECW, or telling the whole story to hardened fans of the franchise. Most memorable of all in the DVD, which sticks with you long after watching, is the sound coming from nearly every ECW audience in any match---the chants of "E-C-W! E-C-W! E-C-W! E-C-W!" every time the match hits a high point.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best feature doc the WWE has ever produced........2006-12-16

Before the debacle that was the 2006 rebirth of ECW, this 2 disc set started things in motion, as it sold like crazy and convinced Vince McMahon that a WWE produced ECW was a good idea. This R rated, three hour documentary is full of every twist and turn the original ECW went through, including the Mass Transit incident, the first ECW pay per view, and their struggles on TNN (now Spike TV).

Paul Heyman (of course) gets most of the airtime, but many of the wrestlers (the Dudleys, Tazz, Tommy Dreamer, etc.) offer very candid comments as well.

An extra disc of matches rounds out this fantastic set. If you weren't a huge ECW fan back in the day, then this won't really tickle your interest. But to any true pro wrestling fan, it's required viewing.

5 out of 5 stars This Is EXTREME...But Not Perfect.......2006-07-10

This was the DVD that started the rebirth of the spirit of Extreme Championship Wrestling back into professional wrestling. Selling out in record numbers and becoming the #2 best selling DVD in WWE (they stopped getting the selling numbers when they were at less than 1,000 sales away from being #1) which lead to the ECW One Night Stand PPV, future WWE releases of ECW, and even the Hardcore Homecoming reunion tour & the Forever Hardcore documentry (which I would recommend right besides this). Here you get a history (not the complete history) of ECW and the influences it's hard on professional wrestling. You only have so much time to condense the history of ECW that they had this DVD cater to those who were under a WWE contract at the time but still, it's a great DVD set.

The documentry stars at how Paul Heyman took over the booking for Eastern Championship Wrestling from Eddie Gilbert and introduced ECW's first home grown act called The Public Enemy. From here, you'll go into ECW first major fued between Tommy Dreamer & Sandman that really "broke taboo" in the wrestling business. The importance of the fans (including good ol' Hat Guy) & city of Philidelphia are heavily discussed along with the production value, how ECW was really "reality based" television, and what made ECW stand out above the WWE & WCW. The influence of pure wrestlers such as Benoit, Malenko, Guerrero along with those such as 2 Cold Scorpio and even Faarooq...oops, I mean Ron Simmons. Extreme lucha libre was discussed as Heyman openily admits that it was Konnan who helped get these guys such as Mysterio, Psichosis, and Juventud into ECW. Also discussed is how ECW was really the beginning for Steve Austin coming into his own as his "Stone Cold" character. One of the biggest stories in ECW history was talked about as Stevie Richards & Kurt Angle himself give their accounts to the crucifixion of the Sandman including never before seen footage of the whole incident & Raven breaking character to apologize. The business relationship between WWE & ECW is also talked about including how the whole thing started with "King Mabel" which led to cross promotion on RAW, the Mind Games PPV, and eventually later Jerry Lawler himself invading ECW. The whole emotional story being ECW gaining...then losing...then gaining their Barely Legal PPV is touched apon along with the stories behind of the main events. Also you hear the behind the scenes stories of wrestlers taking jobs inside the company to help itself out. From here the downfall starts as you hear about financial problems and top wrestlers leaving the company, the entire TNN and how it didn't turn out to be as good as expected along with why Taz (World Champion) and Dudley Boyz (Tag Team Champions) left ECW after being on TNN for one week. The whole Mike Awesome/WCW story including the footage of Taz winning the title...only to be beaten by WWE Champion Triple H on SmackDown before losing the belt to Dreamer, everyone's thought on what ended ECW, and Paul Heyman's thoughts on debuting on RAW in Feburary close the documentry out.

Throughout the whole documentry you get profiles & a little history on such ECW stars like Paul Heyman & Tommy Dreamer themselves, Public Enemy, Taz, Sabu, Terry Funk, The Sandman, Mickey Whipwreck, Cactus Jack, Raven, "Extreme Superstar" Steve Austin, the bWo, the Dudleys, and Rob Van Dam. You also hear stories from these wrestlers (again, under contract to WWE) regarding personal stories from ECW such as Taz breaking his neck, Sabu getting fired, and his reign as the FTW Champion. Tommy Dreamer's account of the fued between him & Raven including the controveral lesbian storyline, RVD's feelings about his involvement at the Barely Legal PPV, Stevie Richards story behind the Blue World Order, Al Snow story of how "Head" restared his whole career, D-Von's take on the whole Mass Transit Incident along with the Dudley's account of being the most hated tag team on the planet. Also throughout this documentry, you'll hear comments from what many called "The Anti-Christ Of ECW" Eric Bischoff in regards to various subjects regarding ECW such as him "raiding" talent like Benoit, Guerrero, Malenko, and Jericho along with Rey Mysterio Jr. & the rest of the luchadors. You will also hear how Bischoff felt about ECW during the Monday Night Wars & how he felt they were never a threat and why they went out of business. You will also hear from Vince McMahon himself regarding why he would help ECW, their working relationship, and if he thinks WWE's "Attitude" came from ECW's "Revolution".

The second disc is full of classic ECW matches such as the famous Raven/Richards vs. Pitbulls Dog Collar/2 Out Of 3 Falls Match which had more cameos and plot twist than the average episode of RAW; a 2 out of 3 falls match with Mysterio vs. Psichosis to show what extreme lucha libre was all about, 2 Cold Scorpio vs. Sabu, and Mickey Whipwreck's title win against the Sandman in a ladder match unlike ladder matches you see in WCW/WWE which also had a cameo appearence from Steve Austin. Tommy Dreamer & Coach do alternative commentry on the final Dreamer vs. Raven match and the WWE invasion afterwards lead by Jerry Lawler, Taz vs. Bam Bam Bigelow's famous match from Living Dangerously is on here along with alternative commentry from Taz & Michael Cole, and the famous RVD vs. Jerry Lynn rematch from Hardcore Heaven '99 is on here with commentary from RVD & Michael Cole. Along with these matches are personal stories regarding Taz's phone call to Paul Heyman before debuting at the Royal Rumble in 2000, Chris Jericho's account of getting a flight plan revolving his "dead brother-in-law" Chris Benoit, and Stevie Richards telling his story of everything that happened between leaving ECW, WCW, and ECW again. There are also hidden extras such as the Taz/Bigelow history, RVD's scar from his match with Lynn, and Mickey Whipwreck training with the Public Enemy, and an old ECW "Pulp Fiction" promo montage they would do at the end of their shows each week.

The biggest critism I have (despite the fact that non-WWE wrestlers weren't interviews or heavily discussed) with this is that some of the facts are incorrect. Despite how WWE made it look, Anarchy Rulz wasn't Taz's last match in ECW when he ended up wrestling there for the rest of the year including a PPV match against RVD. The Tod Gordon mole story which Tod explained better on the Forever Hardcore DVD which revealed it was a work but yet WWE make it look like this was something that was really happening. And how it was made to look like Dreamer was the last ECW Champion when he was only ECW Champion for around 20 mins. But overall, a great DVD documentry.

    5 out of 5 stars Roger.......2006-07-10

Excellent DVD for any wrestling fan. It has alot of information about the promoter and wrestlers that made ECW what it was and is today. I enjoyed this 2 Disc DVD.

For their first film, the Clash could've easily cast themselves in the lead. The fiery foursome, however, were nothing if not unpredictable. Just as the little known Phil Daniels was the star of Quadrophenia--rather than the Who--the completely unknown Ray Gange is the star of the more vérité-like Rude Boy. The year is 1978 and England has gone to the dogs, with the National Front on the rise and rioting in the streets. Ray, as he's also known in the film, is a bleary-eyed punk, who works in a hole-in-the-wall Brixton sex shop. The 20-year-old blows off steam by going to see the Clash. Sometimes he hangs out with them. Eventually, Ray becomes their roadie, but the band fails to convince him that the left-wing has any more to offer than the right. "I don't think you should mix your music with politics," he finally tells Joe Strummer. "It annoys me." In this re-mastered and expanded edition, the quartet performs "I Fought the Law," "White Riot" with Sham 69's Jimmy Pursey, and 15 other songs, both live and in rehearsal. As for Gange, he isn't a great actor, but he's an engaging presence, and Rude Boy plays like a rambling cross between Alan Clarke (Made in Britain) and early Mike Leigh (Meantime). It may be fiction, but feels like fact, and the abundance of early material from the Clash makes up for any shortcomings. Extras include interviews (Gange, road manager Johnny Green, and co-directors Jack Hazan and David Mingay), four deleted scenes, two bonus live tracks, and two rare BBC performances. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the live performances..........2006-12-16

Maybe 2 stars for the movie itself. I found the plot hard to follow. The scenes with acting are quite forced and insincere. The filmmakers tried to include a political tone - and i couldn't make much sense of it. Perhaps I'll try to figure it out upon a second viewing.

The live performances, however, are electrifying. It is fortunate that The Clash have been documented live during this period in their career. They were TIGHT. The most amazing part for me was the recording of "All The Young Punks" with Joe Strummer singing into the mic with headphones on. That part is simply breath taking.

I watched the BBC performances - also electrifying, but a bit polished - unlike the raw footage featured in the film.

If you are a major Clash fan, this is obviously a must have.

    4 out of 5 stars London Falling.......2006-10-13

If there's any consolation to some of punk's inspirational touchstones like Pete Townshend, The Stooges, and The MC5 being usurped by the Year Zero brigade, it may lie in their spiritual and sonic influence on groups like The Clash, none of whose members have ever had much good to say about "Rude Boy," the part fiction/part documentary/part performance film, now finally available digitally over here in the U.S., in which they had little input until it came time to help Bill Price salvage the soundtrack.

What passes for a plot revolves loosely around the hiring of Ray Gange, playing himself, as a roadie for the 1978 "Sort It Out" tour. Gange, whose life is frequently hazed by a heavy alcohol intake, apparently has nothing better to do between shifts at a porn shop than having sex in toilet stalls, waiting for his dole check to arrive in the post, and hanging out with the band and his vertically-challenged skinhead mate. Most of the dialogue would benefit from subtitles unless you're able to cut through the heavy Pom accents - made even more impenetrable by the effects of fermented malted grains - or translate "jack the lad," "down the nick," or "stroppy wankers." I haven't a clue.

There's an undercurrent of social commentary at work here on the parts of directors David Mingay and Jack Hazan that I don't even have a prayer of trying to convey, having slept through political science, economics AND social studies in high school. Many of the exterior shots from in and around a pre-Thatcher London are perpetually shrouded in gray and depict skirmishes between police in riot gear, the National Front, and uh, the anti-National Front (see what I mean?), abandoned council flats tagged with racist graffiti, and a malaise which hangs over the proceedings like a funeral shroud.

With The Clash's name appearing above the title, though, most won't come here for either a message or character development. Gange, on film and reportedly in real life, spirals downward, drowning in a sea of tipple and stumbling through several scenes so seedy that you're tempted to start shooting up. There's no doubt he has a knack, but I'm not sure if it's for acting or vomiting.

Actually, that's entirely unfair. Admittedly no actor, Gange had the role presented to him by Mingay and his acceptance was based more on a chance to get close to his favorite band than any utopian vision of film stardom. The bonus interview footage reveals a bright, cerebral guy who saw his payment from the producers as a way out of the country, and his performance exudes such a natural and understated sense of scruffy charisma that it's easy to forget he's in character. Although barely conscious through most of the first two reels, it's hard to not to love Gange, in a drooling-floppy-eared-dog-that-perpetually-humps-your-leg-as-soon-as-you-get-in-the-door way.

Any notions that the band many feel to be the best of its generation was living a life filled with limousines, five-star hotels, champagne and groupies on ice in the dressing room, and nights of glory under the bright lights are scotched early on as they stagger from one spartan accommodation to the next, crammed into small cars alongside their gear, road manager Johnny Green practically bartering his soul in exchange for replacement equipment and Joe Strummer acting as his own wardrobe manager (as if!), washing his Brigade Rossi t-shirt in a hotel sink.

Since the camera crew wasn't cheek-by-jowl with the band 24 hours a day, they were asked to re-enact and/or improvise certain key scenes from which their legend has grown for the sake of substance and continuity, including the arrests of Paul Simonon and Topper Headon for pigeon sniping from atop their rehearsal space which formed the inspiration for "Guns on the Roof," and the Glasgow Apollo dogfight between bouncers and fans which landed Simonon and Strummer in the chokey.

Despite revelations that "Rude Boy" may not have been filmed as close to "as it happened" as originally represented, there's plenty here to recommend it, such as (and you had to see this coming) the concert scenes, which are the picture of spontaneity, abandon, and chest-thumping bravado, The Clash lining `em up and knocking `em down with little or no regard for their or their crew's physical well being, wedged onto postage stamp-sized stages and in many instances, sharing them with their audience. For Strummer, the guitar was less a musical instrument than a stage prop, but Simonon, Headon, and Mick Jones show no compunction about wielding and rattling theirs like sabres.

The BBC clips of "Clash City Rockers" and "Tommy Gun" are contemptuous and white hot, the band brazenly throwing down a gauntlet on enemy turf and stepping over it on their way out the door. The interviews of Hazan and Mingay shed a little light on just what the hell they were trying to accomplish with this project and Green still seems woozy, nay gobsmacked, by it all some 25 years later. He oughta write a book. Wait, he already did? Never mind.

If you're looking for an ending that ties things up into a neat, tidy package, though, look away now because quite frankly, it doesn't exist, "Rude Boy" coming full stop with questions unanswered, conflicts unresolved, and anthems unwritten.

    Just like The Clash.

Most of these reviews are spot on - terrible movie, great music. However, from the details here, it seems the US version has been short changed - the English version also had a 7-song set from a German 1977 concert/student documentary film. That alone was worth the purchase price.

Shot in the fall of 2001 on the group's final tour, Megadeth's Rude Awakening catches a seminal metal band at the top of its game. Although references to the then-recent terrorist events are rare, they instill songs like "In My Darkest Hour," "Symphony of Destruction," and "Peace Sells" with an undercurrent of bitterness, laced with the anger that's already there.

Singer-songwriter Dave Mustaine is a charismatic figure, and one of speed metal's most literate elder statesman, as demonstrated by his astute, witty comments in the DVD's brief interview section. Also on the DVD, the 105-minute concert is augmented by additional footage of five tunes (including "Kill the King" and "A Tout le Monde," dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks), shot in grainy black and white. Rude Awakening is the first official Megadeth live concert release, and if it's also the last, it will remain a testament to the band's durability and musical ability. --Kevin Filipski

5 out of 5 stars A MONSTER SHOWCASE OF MEGADETH GUITAR METAL.......2007-01-16

Those of you who lost interest in MEGADETH since the loss of Marty Friedman, take heart. When you see Al Pitrelli trade solos with Dave Mustaine you're gonna know the GUITAR GODS in HEAVEN are smiling down on MEGADETH. In the SPECIAL FEATURES section of the DVD called MEGADETH ON MEGADETH, Mustaine says, "Al is a better guitarist than I am." (MEGADETH stole Al Pitrelli from THE ALICE COOPER BAND.) Dave is selling himself short because when you watch these two battle for the lead they compliment each other so well, in my opinion it's a draw. These guys put on a CLINIC of HEAVY METAL GUITAR playing. If you're an aspiring Metal guitarist you owe it to yourself to buy this DVD. This is how it's done, guys. The cameras at this show catch some fine CLOSE-UPS of these two blistering GUITAR GIANTS fingering their fretboards. This really is a SHOWCASE for MEGADETH's guitar oriented sound. (Even though these styles of playing differ considerably, I would place MEGADETH's RUDE AWAKENING alongside of STRAY CATS' RUMBLE IN BRIXTON[Brian Setzer's Rockabilly guitar] and EMPEROR'S IMPERIAL LIVE CEREMONY[Isahn and Samoth's Black Metal guitar] as one of the TOP LIVE GUITAR DVDs I own.) TRULY AMAZING!!

Mainstay David Ellefson is TERRIFIC on bass and Jimmy Degrasso is a MONSTER on skins!!

There is a choice in SETTINGS of a 5.1 Surround or a 2.0 Pro Logic MIX. While the MIX is not the best I've ever heard, it is SOLID and sounds GREAT with very little adjustment. The VOCALS are pushed forward in the MIX which is unusual, because in most concert recordings the VOCALS are never far forward enough in the MIX for my taste. Nice job, guys!!

The concert was shot in 4:3 FULLSCREEN. The MAIN CONCERT contains 20 songs and is an hour and 45 minutes long with 5 BONUS songs appearing in the SPECIAL FEATURES as the UNDERGROUND LIVE SHOW, which is weird because it's the same show as the MAIN CONCERT with some black & white imaging. This portion is about 15 minutes in length. (I'll be buying the DOUBLE LIVE CDs for sure.)

There are no major Stadium Rock accoutrements on stage for this show. Just the boys in street clothes playing their hearts out in front of an ENORMOUS "F"ing MARSHALL STACK!! Jesus Christ, they must be deaf!! :)

This concert ALMOST loses 1 STAR for the EDITING. It's too kinetic at times and made me dizzy after smoking some herbals. Why do producers feel it's necessary to CUT a CONCERT FILM to make it feel like a MUSIC VIDEO? When I see a band LIVE my eyeballs aren't darting around the stage like pinballs. STAY FOCUSED ON THE BAND MEMBERS FOR MORE THAN 2 SECONDS AT A TIME!! If the music is good, the energy on stage will show up in post production without the hyper-kinetic EDITS!! Concert Film Producers need to learn this NOW!! The CAMERA WORK is great with many terrific CLOSE-UPS of the band and the headbanging audience that are almost spoiled by the CUTS. However, this concert is SO GOOD you'll get used to it and I don't want to bring down the RATING. Just don't get transfixed by the visuals and you'll be fine.

A GREAT mix of Past and Present MEGADETH songs. NOTE: The list of song tracks on the back of the box are WRONG. You need to go to SONG SELECTION in MENU for the proper order of tracks.

SPECIAL FEATURE, MEGADETH ON MEGADETH is a short thirteen minutes long. If you're a Hardcore fan you might need to buy VH1'S MEGADETH: BEHIND THE MUSIC. Mustaine's rudeness is evident on this Disc when he says, "When we were starving as a young band, we lived with a lot of fat chicks. Because fat chicks always have food." CLASSIC!!

A MUST OWN FOR ALL MEGADETH FANS!!

    Remember:

    THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED!!

and THE WORLD WILL END IN MEGADETH!!

    ENJOY.

    4 out of 5 stars A Never-too-late Review for Megadeth.......2006-05-02

I got to watch the DVD now even though it was released years ago, but the effect is still refreshing! Dave was a non-nonsense guy on stage and he saved all the talking and running and prancing on stage and he even hardly headbanged. Instead he impressed us with his Speed Metal finger work plus his raspy voice.

While some bands played the songs 'live' with a 'live' flavour (like Metallica), most of the Megadeth songs played here adhered closely to the studio version. Dave Mustane, being the frontman, (again I can't help to compare him with James Hetfield) also did not really bother to work the audience up because they already worked up on their own!

I prefer the earlier songs like Wake Up Dead/In My Darkest Hours. The DVD quality was good and plenty of close-ups on Dave's finger work. Good for shredder like me to better understand how he played the tabs. He used the same guitar throughout the concert and I believe it was a Jackson, which quite surprised me since he is an endorcer for his own ESP signature series. By the way, was he a blonde or was it due to the lighting effect?

1 out of 5 stars bad movie and in a negative way.......2006-03-24

not worth spending any money on. stick to third world cop and dancehall queen if you want to watch a good jamaican movie.

    1 out of 5 stars If i could i would give it 1/2 stars.......2005-12-15

This movie is the worst Jamaican movie ever. It makes Top Shottas look like Scarface. The "story", "acting" an "action scenes" were all laughable. If your a real fan of Jamaican films save your money or invest it in "Smile Orange", "The Harder They Come", "Third World Cop" or "Dancehall Queen" or even "Top Shotta".

1 out of 5 stars I hope future anthropologists don't judge us for this.......2004-07-19

This film would reflect poorly on Jamaican cinema, but it was mostly filmed in the United States so West Indians can sleep easy knowing it's not their fault. This is a remarkably bad movie in concept and execution from all aspects save the soundtrack.

The film follows the story of Julius (Mark Danvers) an aspiring musician and mass murderer. Emigrating to the United States as a mule for a Suge Knightesque fellow, he immediately is frustrated by an employer who demands that he actually work in order to receive remuneration. Faced with so tyrannical a demand, he is torn with the dilemma of returning to his rude ways or sticking it out legit to save money for studio time. The devil on one shoulder snuffs the angel on the other. The poor acting having started from the get go, the film then begins wandering aimlessly from drug deal to drug deal and shooting to shooting all the while trying to pawn off on the audience bad acting and poor character development. Luckily, the technical aspects of the film are terrible as well so as to make for almost perfect symmetry across the quality board. Only Beenie Man's competence as an actor keeps the film from achieving anti-perfection, well, that and a halfway decent soundtrack.

As the film drags on one realizes that journeyman writers Bentley Kyle and Trenton Gumbs refuse to take advantage of many opportunities to make the film stop. Instead, they continue on piling superfluity at every chance to a film already much too long at the first natural conclusion point. The script lacks throughout in every way imaginable. The audience should heed the warning from Ninja Man's first appearance that further viewing will be a testing ordeal. He's a legendary freestyler but a terrible actor. There are perhaps two or three funny lines in the film but the real joke is on me as I didn't turn it off thinking it might get better.

2 out of 5 stars HAS SOME DECENT ACTING, BUT..........2004-06-09

A REGGAE MUSICIAN BEGINS TO DEAL DRUGS FOR A DRUG KINGPIN SO HE COULD GET THE MONEY FOR STUDIO TIME. HAS A DECENT PLOT, BUT MOST OF THE ACTING ISN'T GOOD, AND MOST OF THE CHARACTERS WERE JUST CLICHED CHARCTERS THAT YOU'D USUALLY SEE A JAMAICAN ACTOR PLAY. I DO AGREE THAT THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF THINGS TO LAUGH AT WHEN WATCHING THIS MOVIE. NOT THE WORST OF ITS KIND, BUT, I DON'T THINK ITS REALLY WORTH BUYING.

4 out of 5 stars Aside From Courtney Love's Screams............2007-02-10

For die-hard Clash fans, rather for fans of the late 1970's English punk movement, this movie is hard to resist. An eclectic group of musicians and actors, including Joe Strummer, members of The Pogues, Dennis Hopper, Elvis Costello, and Jim Jarmusch, this homage to Spaghetti Westerns is wonderful. If you get it. For those who might necessarily appreciate the actors, the humor may be lost.
This project was director Alex Cox's immediate after Sid & Nancy, the story of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his violent love affair with Nancy Spungen. In fact, Courtney Love may have been channeling Nancy for her role in Straight to Hell. She is the only truly bad addition to this movie. Her annoying and insescent screaming was hard to get through at certain points.
Overall, if you have an appreciation for all of these personalities on one set, in one film, then it is well worth the purchasing price.

    4 out of 5 stars Cool Movie.......2006-08-19

I was worried about not liking this movie. I'd read a lot of Reviews that said it was weird or boring. But I love Joe Strummer so I had to check it out. and I was pleasantly surprized to find a quirky laugh out loud movie. IT Is a DARK comedy. and you'll either love it or hate it, get it or not. I only gave 4 stars because Courtney Love annoys me she's the only downside to the movie, but her part isn't hugh so it's bareable. I loved seeing Strummer playing a cool sexy guy, he had some great funny moments. Shane Macgowan made me crack up when ever he's on screen. I was also surprized to see some actors in it that are now recgnizable from their recent work like an actor from medium and one from 24. Give this movie a chance and you'll be rewarded.

5 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny reviews.......2006-07-17

Yup, this film--which happens to be one of my all-time faves--is not for everyone. Way back a bit before Sting and Bono gave a whole new meaning to the idea of pompous jerk, British punker musicians brought a real Midlands working class sense of irony and absurdity to the world--often not only through their music but through their stage chatter. Some of the flat-out funniest people I've ever encountered were punkers from the Eighties. The single-most un-funny human I've ever known was a major league grunge performer, and let's not even go near modern rappers and the whole EMO phenomenon. In other words, if you're a Post-Eighties kid this movie probably won't work well for you as you're probably soaked in earnest and dreary. A Brit recently told me that Americans have totally lost their sense of irony. There you have it.

The premise of this film was brilliant--let's take a bunch of Brit rockers to Spain (because a concert gig in Central America fell through), write a script in two days, and make a Spaghetti Western using a dilapidated old set from the early 70's. This couldn't happen today for a variety of reasons, one being that a bunch of musicians with any public reputation wouldn't put up with the lousy accommodations in order to have a bit of fun. Then there's that sense of humor thing again, I can't think of any performer today who could pull off what (just to give a few examples) Joe Strummer and all the Pogues do here. They probably lived on Pepsi and hot dogs for the three weeks it took to shoot this wonder, and they probably didn't give a hoot. And then again, this couldn't have happened back then with American punkers who tended to be snots. I think we stopped being funny a long time ago.

The pace is slow because the film does a great job of emulating its models; mainly those classic Clint Eastwood films. So there. However, it's beyond mere parody and there's plenty of terrific slapstick and just goofy humor all the way through the flick. It's one of those films where there are almost too many memorable vignettes--a bit where Strummer is in a clinch with a gal and his gun accidentally goes off and he has to fake having been bitten by a snake is, for me, one of the classic funny moments in film. The soundtrack alone (at least until kids who are easily bored started writing reviews for Amazon) was, for many years, considered to be classic. The, uh, "violence" is farcical and hardly graphic; also, to have fun, they scrupulously avoided obscenity and nudity in the film, which is what everybody expected from this gang. I understand it got an R rating almost by accident.

Anyway, I love Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, and all those screwball comedies of the 1930's and this film is one of my favorites. Elsewhere in Amazonia another youngster expresses her boredom over the Cary Grant collection that includes "The Awful Truth"--a flick that rivals Shakespeare. Need I write more?

Some day, when all us tedious Americans who think humor is sadism, making fun of people, and/or doing disgusting things (the lowest forms of humor by the way) are all dead and gone, and the country is full of newcomers who can find genuine joy and laughter in things, this film will be regarded as a classic.

[Raegen Butcher down below gets it dead right by describing this film as a people-sorter in the manner of "Big Trouble in Little China"--a gem that is for me up there with "Gone With the Wind" and "Citizen Kane." I generally find that anyone who doesn't like "Big Trouble" or this flick puts ME to sleep in minutes. And while I'm at it, what's with these one-star reviews because something bores you? Everybody I know under the age of thirty these days is bored by anything that isn't exploding in their faces. It tells me more about the reviewer than the product being reviewed]

1 out of 5 stars Put me Straight to Sleep............2005-09-11

Unless you enjoy lots of meaningless violence, this movie is a total bore. Three guys and a pregnant Courtney Love rob a bank, and escape to a western town. There is a lot of shooting and a lot of people die. And that is pretty much the depth of the plotline. A few funny lines in there, but definately not enough to be considered a comedy. You know it's a bad movie when an hour's gone by and you're still waiting for the point. Don't waste your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars funny as Hell.......2005-08-21

I saw this twice during its too brief(one week!)run in Seattle in 1987 and i was always showing it to people later on video who thought i was INSANE, which may or may not be beside the point, but this is one of THOSE movies, like BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, that can inform you about someones personal sense of humor and taste. Either you get it or you don't. I think this movie is some kind of psychopathic classic that perfectly sends up the extreme amorality of the spaghetti westerns and prefigures the homicidal men in black suits later to turn up in Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. And few films can top it for sheer nihilistic rip-it-apart glee. I am glad it is finally being seen on DVD in its original aspect ratio, because in the theaters it had very carefully staged WIDESCREEN compositions which were lost on video. The cast is uniformly weird and wonderful: Sy Richardson, channeling pure self-righteous macho bad-ass blackness, JOE STRUMMER, showing a surprisingly light touch for comedy, Dick Rude, hilariously channeling a psycho-punk James Cagney,COURTNEY LOVE (Hang in there, girl!)gives a truly committed performance as a shrill whining NANCY SPUNGEN MONSTER, the POGUES almost manage to say their dialog, ELVIS COSTELLO doesn't have much dialog but acquits himself well. I could go on and on about the rest of the cast, and there's plenty of them still to mention, including and especially MIGUEL SANDOVER, who does the greatest CLINT EASTWOOD send-up i have ever had the pleasure of watching.

Watch this film ...you'll either get it...or you won't. I laughed like hell.
