A crass and cheesy but enjoyable crowd pleaser, a huge hometown hit that kicked off a wave of "gambler" films in Hong Kong in 1989. Chow Yun-fat plays a legendary sportsman so adept that he can listen to the dice rattling in the cup and "sense" the outcome. He is poised to take on his greatest challenge, a Singapore bigwig known for cheating, when he is accidentally bopped on the bean and develops a form of superamnesia that amounts to reversion to childhood. As rehabilitated by a good-hearted apprentice card sharp (Andy Lau), Chow becomes famous all over again, under the new sobriquet "The Retarded King of Gamblers." The finale is especially gratifying, as Chow trounces all his enemies at the card table. There are some hair-raisingly dangerous-looking stunts, and some winning interludes of subadolescent let's-make-a-mess slapstick. Director Wong Jing is a commercial hack who turns out literally dozens a films a year, but he knows how to push the viewer's buttons. --David Chute

Very, very bad version!.......2005-09-26
Leave your fingers of this version. A very good movie, Chow-Yun Fat at its best. But you will only understand, if you know to talk chinese! The english subtitles have been cut of!
found a better copy of god of gamblers on DVD.......2005-08-03
i accidentally found copies of both 'god of gamblers' and 'god of gamblers' return' on DVD at my local record store. they are both distributed thru a company called mei ah entertainment, which put out 2 of jet li's films (hitman & my father is a hero). i took both DVD's home and put them in the player, and i was totally blown away. the transfers for both films are excellent, widescreen and the subtitles are a digitized white on the screen. you have the option of reading them in english and traditional or simplified chinese. the sound is also satisfactory. the DTS logo is on the packaging, so you have a choice between digital dolby 5.1 or digital dolby 2.0. there are 2 language tracks: chinese and mandarin. the best part, however, is that these DVD's can play in all region DVD players!
as for the films themselves...the popularity of the original 'god of gamblers' (1989) ignited a new genre in hong kong cinema of gambling films. suave gamblers of all ages and genders have been the protagonists of many films since the original, getting maximum mileage out of the exciting prospect of 'god-like' gambling abilities. even some not specifically 'gambling genre' films began including gambling scenes that echoed the cinematic exhilaration and tension inspired by 'god of gamblers'. the original's director, wong jing, did some success-surfing of his own with his 'god of gamblers II' and 'god of gamblers III back to shanghai' starring parody king stephen chiao...although either 'god of gamblers' or 'god of gamblers' return' may not break any new cinematic ground, it certainly does succeed in reaffirming chow yun fat's unparalleled appeal and success in the genre's terrain (HKFM).
if you could find the mei ah edition of these films, snatch them if you can. i must add they are a bit pricey ($25 each), but they are both worth it!
Great movie (if you don't know chinese read this!).......2002-08-07
If you like Chow Yun-Fat, you will like this movie! I bought this movie first on vhs. The vhs is wide screen with chinese subtitle, and english under it. When they put it to DVD, they made it fit to television (ie not widescreen). In doing so they
cut off the english subtitles. IF YOU DON'T KNOW CHINESE DON'T BOTHER BUYING THIS, UNTIL THEY COME OUT WITH A BETTER VERSION!!
God of Gamblers-Showcase for Chow Yun-Fat's versatility!.......2002-05-04
Underappreciated as an actor in the west, Chow Yun Fat shows his versatility in this Hong Kong Comedy/drama. Chow stars as Ko Chun a gifted gambler with an almost supernatural gift for gaming, hence his exalted title.
Ko Chun is suave and sophisticated, master of his gaming, monetarily successful and comfortable in his abilities. This makes him enemies among not only opponents, but as it turns out, supposed friends.
Having narrowly escaped an assasination attempt, Chow unwittingly walks into a trap set by Knife, a young gambler wannabe who has little success in his endeavors. Knife meant to teach someone else a lesson by sabotaging a trail below his home, instead, Ko Chun is the victim. Finding the head injured gambler, Knife and his family take him in and nurse him back to health, not knowing who has fallen into their laps.
Ko Chun awakens from his trauma with no memory and regressed to a childlike demeanor with an insatiable hunger for a particular brand of chocolate (one carry over from his former life), and as Knife and Co. find out, a talent for gambling. Knife and his crew make good use of their new friend's abilities--becoming upwardly mobile thanks to "Chocolate"--the nickname they bestow upon him.
Chow Yun Fat has never been more endearing and charming as the brain injured "Chocolate". Where other actors might come off as goofy, pitiable or even laughable attempting this shift, Chow makes it believeable and incredibly touching. The viewer wishes to protect Chocolate from a world he no longer understands and which is by turns baffling and inhospitable--just as Knife and his crew come to love and protect their friend.
Their sudden success brings unwanted attention, which leads to pursuit, kidnapping, ransom and gunplay, and further trauma to poor Chocolate, leading to a showdown that highlights the God of Gamblers uncanny ability to win, even when opponents cheat and "friends" betray.
While Chow Yun Fat's ability and charisma are at the heart and soul of this film, the supporting players are excellent, especially Andy Lau and Joey Wong.
A must see and a must own for any Chow Yun Fat fan! Getting increasingly hard to find--get your copy now! (Review of the VCD unedited version. The DVD is edited and several scenes of the group becoming upwardly mobile have been deleted).
Bad DVD of a great fun movie.......2001-06-24
Too bad the folks who produced this didn't take some care with it. The picture is passable and the sound is OK but if you're interested in following the plot from reading the English subtitles be prepared for a lot of guessing and frustration as they are mostly unreadable at the bottom edge of the screen. I don't know how the subtitles are for the other languages, never tried them since I don't read them. But with no English language track the lack of useful English subtitles makes this DVD worthwhile only for the hard-core Chow Yun-Fat fan in America.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as the original.......2000-01-11
I think this movie is way worse than the original. But it is not Chow's fault. The only reason I give it a three is because Chow is in it, and he is as good as ever. Really, his bad movies are usually not his fault. It was always either the translation, the directing, or the plot that make some of his movies bad. I don't think he wanted to do a sequel, and that is why it took him many years to finally do it. The problem lies in the director, who thought he could make more money by making a sequel. He did exactly that, but he also messed up a perfect story. The jokes were stupid and the story itself was also stupid, unlike the original masterpiece.
Such a disappointment!.......1999-10-23
Although I'll be assassinated for writing this (as others gave it such a good review), this was truly a poor film. Chow Yun-Fat deserved a better vehicle to bring back the legendary figure of Ko San. Wong Jing again shows his aptitude filling films with his usual crass comedy. It's sad to think that 'The Boss Of Dross' made such films as Last Hero In China and of course the original. Basically, if Wong Jing had released his holiday snaps under this title it still would have cleaned up at the box-office.
A TAILOR-MADE ROLE FOR CHOW.......1999-10-08
I've always been a hard-rock fan of the God Of Gamblers series. The original movie shot the coolest actor to fame all around the world spurned lots of other copycats. Stephen Chow was the Saint of Gamblers on his own, then in GoG 2, he met Knight Of Gamblers Andy Lau (Knife Chan) and became the God's disciple. In GoG Return, there was one extrememly memorable line...when the God said to Long Wu, "Knife and Sing are famous now, I'm so happy to know that." Well, I was even happier when I heard that because though this movie does not show the 2 disciples, at least they are mentioned by their master to keep the sentimental charm of the 1st 2 movies intact!=) This movie reveals the more "cheeky" side of the respectable God (remember the scene where he cut off the whirling cloth the stupid officer was holding?). I especially LOVED the part where he acted as Andy Lau, his own disciple! When Ng Sin Lin asked him to sit on the bed and face his back towards her, man....he was so charming with his forehead resting on his hand from the back view!! The whole plot of this movie is a clever one, where the God set his revenge plan exactly for 1 year, due to the last promise of his wife. At the final confrontation, he once again beats his opponent effortlessly (his acting IN THE SHOW itself indeed earns him the title as the reigning God Of Gamblers e.g pretending to sweat in fear...have that losing look on his face...etc), and shows everyone how he did it. A clever plot that starts off with a good bang and ends with a cunning joyful twist that leaves Chow leaving the gambling arena triumphant. A MUST for ALL fans of GoG.
By the way, I've created a mini-poster on the whole GoG series, where I've put images from all my GoG collection together. Awesome! If U want this poster, contact me.
A Chinese Landmark of Cool.......1999-08-19
This Saga is to Chinese people what Stars Wars was to Sci-fi nerds. Chow Yun Fat is so cool in this movie and I personally believe that everybody will simply adore Mr. Chow for his graceful charms and his rasor sharp guile. Ask any Chinese kid and they will tell you"this movie is a must" also If you have time and you like Kung fu ,movies... YOU MUST see Drunken Punch 2 with Jackie Chan . This is the best Kung Fu Movie EVER!!!!
A great movie that could have been better........1999-04-22
If you want to watch a movie and see how to be "cool" under intense situations...then you must watch this movie and take lots of notes. You will see Chow Yun-Fat reprise his role as "The God Of Gamblers" and you will wonder how can one actor be soooooooooo cool (especially the scene when he encounters the person that killed his wife). Ng Sin Lin is so pretty even though she plays a common looking female in it. Chingmy Yau is fine as always...especially with all the plastic surgery she's had. Whatever you do...avoid the other God Of Gamblers movies (the one without Chow Yun-Fat)...those movies suck. But what makes the movie is Chow Yun-Fat. One quote says it all, "Chow Yun-Fat is the coolest actor in the world."

I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was pretty good. It's probably not for everybody, but Stephen Chow was funny. Sort of like a J. Chan movie. Transported back in time because he used powerful kung-fu he finds himself in early 1900's Shanghai. He gets job with good guy gambler and falls in love. I won't say any more because I don't want to ruin it,however it was a pretty good movie. Also,Gong Li as twins adds something special.
