Description
For years, Jake Thorn, a storm chaser in the Texas panhandle, has been trying to outguess when twisters will strike - before they do. Then one day his former meteorology professor, Dr. Branson, comes to Tornado Alley with a startling invention with which he hopes to collect the data to be used to predict tornado activity. The only hitch; they must place the device smack in the devastating path of the twister - and get away in time. To make matters worse, Samantha Callen, a beautiful field investigator from the National Accounting Office, has been dispatched to kill the program - unless she can be convinced the invention will work. For Jake and Branson, it's a race against time and the elements in this compelling tale of heroism in the face of nature's fury. Bruce Campbell

Supreme silliness doesn't stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day and Godzilla, you can't blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerich's films, this one emphasizes special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters and plausible plotting, and his dialogue (cowritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff) is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. It's the spectacle that's important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father and son (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal) who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummeled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, and Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans and then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. It's all wildly impressive, and Emmerich obviously doesn't care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? --Jeff Shannon

Description

When global warming triggers the onset of a new Ice Age, tornadoes flatten Los Angeles, a tidal wave engulfs New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. Now, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a small band of survivors must ride out the growing superstorm and stay alive in the face of an enemy more powerful and relentless than any they've ever encountered: Mother Nature!

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2007-06-13

I saw this movie when it was released, and I must say I was not impressed.

The concept of the movie had some serious potential, but the ball was dropped due to a number of factors. One, the stoy was rushed. Almost instantly the viewer is thrown into the story with very little build-up, which also costs the viewer time to get into the characters and actually get to care about what happens to them. Secondly, when it comes to the order of how things happen, there is no order. Random acts occur almost out of nowhere and without any real explanation. I know that nature itself is unpredictable and for that reason only, it works.

Also, due to the rush of the story as I mentioned, there is no time to really get into the characters and thus, there is no reason to care about them (aside from the dog.) I found myself actually saying that these people weren't prpared and they deserved what they got!

Overall, its a good movie to watch just for the heck of it and getting a good laugh; but its not worth any time beyond that.

3 out of 5 stars Creating a State of Fear.......2007-05-26

The film shows scientists in the antarctic, their tests show global warming is increasing. The paradoxical result will be a frozen earth! TV news shows snow in New Delhi, large hailstones fall in Tokyo. The strongest hurricane has been recorded. A scientist's young son has discovered the politics of education. Sensors measure drops in the ocean's temperature. Birds and animals are restless and disturbed. What in the world is happening? Tornadoes in Los Angeles destroying the city! People are squashed like bugs. Typhoons in Australia! Could the North Atlantic current be changed due to melting ice (fresh water)? [It was cute to have a President who resembled Al Gore. But is the rest of the film just as correct?]

Their computer projections show a disaster is only 6 to 8 weeks away. The worst storms will soon be here. But the Vice President [looks like Dick Cheney] can't be bothered. The temperature dropped so fast people froze to death in Scotland. The water level has risen so fast New Foundland is flooded. Water is flooding the subways and tunnels of Manhattan. Is it the end of the world as we know it? A huge tidal wave hits New York City! [These special effects are really great!] Now super-cooled air is being pulled into the atmosphere to create a new Ice Age! Anyone who goes outside will be flash frozen. There is no escape for anyone. The southern states will be evacuated, there is no hope for those Yankees north of the Mason-Dixon line.

[Hollywood films usually have a happy ending.]

Back in the real world discussion continues on the effects of Global Warming. From the 10th to the 14th century the world was much warmer. Greenland was a green island where settlers lived on their crops. Southern England raised grapes for a wine industry. That changed in the 14th century, increasing cold led to food shortages, famine; then the Black Death killed over 30% of the population. [Read Barbara Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror" for one view of those times.]

Nice multiple storylines, people you could almost care about (The homeless guy and his dog were the best) but still left the film with the feeling that I didn't get my money's worth. Oh well.

The Doctor, the Tornado & the Kentucky Kid is another motorcycle-racing feast served up by Mark Neale, the director of Faster. Where the earlier film focused on an entire season of MotoGP racing, DTK limits its coverage to the Red Bull Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, California, held over the weekend of July 8-10, 2005. This was the seventh and most hotly anticipated race of the '05 season, not only because Laguna Seca is one of MotoGP's most technically demanding and physically intimidating race courses, but also because it was the first MotoGP race held on American soil since 1994 (evidence of the sport's European emphasis and the efforts of corporate sponsors like Red Bull to popularize MotoGP in the U.S.). Like Faster, this film and its DVD bonus features are aimed squarely at established fans of MotoGP, but potential converts will find plenty to enjoy in Neale's comprehensive coverage of the 32-lap race. And, as any fan can tell you, the title refers to the nicknames of the riders who were key figures on that sunny afternoon: American Nicky "The Kentucky Kid" Hayden on his lightning-fast #69 Repsol Honda; American Colin "The Texas Tornado" Edwards on his #5 Camel Yamaha; and the Italian reigning champion, Valentino Rossi (Edwards' teammate), on his #46 Camel Yamaha.

American challenger John "Hopper" Hopkins is also prominently featured on his #21 Rizia Suzuki, but DTK doesn't flinch from the harsher aspects of a motorsport where success is never guaranteed. Thanks to the film's all-angle coverage of on-track rivalries, it's clear that Edwards and Rossi were the race's undeniable highlight, battling ferociously in the final laps while Hayden was in the lead. With celebrities in the crowd (including cycle fans Brad Pitt and Adrien Brody) and racing enthusiast Ewan McGregor once again providing dramatic narration, Neale's film suffers from occasional lapses in hi-def image quality (owing in part to video-feed static and the unavoidably harsh contrasts of sunny weather), but interviews and voice-overs from the riders keep things interesting from start to finish, along with a throttle-roaring 5.1 Surround soundtrack (with pulsing techno music by TomandAndy) that's the next best thing to being there. The Ultimate Collector's Edition has 11 additional scenes on disc 1 (including longer interviews and highlights from the 2006 Red Bull U.S. GP), and disc 2 consists entirely of "Interactive Racing" clips, allowing viewers to watch three climactic segments of the 2005 race from multiple angles. Switching between several onboard cameras is the closest that most of us will ever get to the sheer thrill of MotoGP, and that makes DTK a must-have DVD for race fans around the world. --Jeff Shannon

Description

THE DOCTOR, THE TORNADO & THE KENTUCKY KID is the electrifying follow-up to Mark Neale's 2004 MotoGP smash hit FASTER. Narrated by Ewan McGregor, the movie tells the story of the biggest motorcycle race in American history, the 2005 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, California. It's a tale of extraordinary characters chasing a dream in the face of real danger, under unimaginable pressure, with no margin for error. For lovers of maximum adrenaline action, this is the pure, unadulterated, 100% genuine article.

This is a must see for anyone following the MotoGP - the insights are priceless and the footage nothing that has ever been seen before - ALL I CAN SAY IS ENJOY...

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-14

Great DVD, good if you are into Moto GP then you will like it. Not much from Rossi though.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-04-05

A fantastic recounting of the first american moto gp in years. The track footage is second to none, and even includes a bit of history. This is all about coming back to Laguna Seca, the race and the racers who raced it.

5 out of 5 stars The Doctor, the Tornado, and the Kentucky Kid.......2007-03-22

This was an outstanding accounting of the race. I know, because I was there. The program captured all of the complexity, engineering and courage needed to compete, and the additional CD with the recordings of the bike cameras was fabulous.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, nothing special.......2007-03-09

If you already saw Faster by Mark Neale, (which is excellent), this is a bit disappointing. Interviews are OK, but the race wasnt one of the better MotoGP races that year.

I got this for my weather-loving 5 year old. It has live footage..and is WONDERFUL for the price. It would be great for anyone that loves weather! Buy it...you won't be disappointed for the price!

4 out of 5 stars Great buy.......2007-03-12

This DVD has about everything a person could ask for when looking for something about tornados. There is the standard "meteorological talk" (which to some might be a bit on the cheesy side, but is educational and worthwhile in my opinion), great chase footage, as well as a good bit of footage about "after the storm," which is usually missing in all other tornado films. There is a lot of great "bonus footage" too. But the best part about this DVD is, whether you love it or hate it, it only costs about $3.00, so who could complain? (I can't leave out that this DVD also has a great sound clip of the "roar" tornadic thunderstorms often make -- that "freight-train" or, as I would call it "jet-engine" sound that everyone always talks about hearing when there has been a tornado.)

Product Description

After a freak tornado destroys Las Vegas, scientists determine that unusually destructive weather could be building over the United States. When a "category five" hurricane forms over the Great Lakes and a band of "force five" tornadoes moves up the Midwest toward Chicago, the resulting collision of deadly weather fronts not only decimates great cities, it ultimately causes the entire North American power grid to implode, effectively leaving the United States without power for at least six months.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darned decent for its genre ............2007-06-13

Yes, another natural disaster movie beginning with a series of intense storms in unexpected places throughout the country and culminating with two big ones colliding to create a super-storm over Chicago. The acting was absolutely terrific and the film offers the expected line-up of small and large personal dramas, crises, close calls, heroics and rescues.

I do have to air my few gripes about its content. It seems to drop all reference to the tornado storm while dealing with the hurricane's arrival. And while most scenes are believably realistic, I had to roll my eyes that the "good guys" never faced enough of the storm, while the three dubbed "villains" were, of course, killed by it. The water scenes showed seas not nearly rough enough for a category 5 hurricane, too many people ran around lost in the streets amidst the storm, and are there really that many palm trees in Chicago? My final gripe ... what began as a series of storms building to these two merging abruptly ends, leaving the movie's entire theme of the overall catastrophic effects of global warming dangling pathetically. A politician's promises are all we're offered in the end.

Hey, pay no mind to my picking at the small stuff! Category 6 is decent and engrossing entertainment within the natural disaster genre! :-)

4 out of 5 stars Just a short note from me........2007-03-30

I'll make this short. I'm not going to shoot down this movie...however I will say this movie (mini series) suffers from the same ailment all of them seem to now-a-days--too many characters, too many subplots, not enough focus on the one main character and plot.

By the way...WHO IS THE MAIN CHARACTER?

On the other hand, having too many characters and subplots is better then craming it full of filler.

4 out of 5 stars Category 6- Day of Distructiuon.......2007-02-08

Good Disaster Movie along with Moive sequel Category 7 End of the World

4 out of 5 stars Good as Disaster movies go but somewhat contrived .......2006-12-19

I enjoyed this for what it was and the idea of 2 mega storms was interesting. i have one complaint though - we played this on a computer and part way through it suddenly jumped to the titles and we had to go into scene selection to complete the viewing. The story line and acting were ok and i liked the fact that there was a build up to the actual disaster which allowed the charcters to become more real. The action was a bit contrived though and while i can see people being so silly, i hardly think that they would be so blase about it all. Still, all in all, i would recommend this to people who enjoy disaster movies.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent entertainment.......2007-04-14

Teenager Dan Hatch and his friend Amos are babysitting Dan's baby brother, watching TV and fooling around. But a major tornado is coming their way, unbeknownst to them but knownst to us, and we just want to scream, "Get the baby and get out of there NOW!". I just love the scene where the ping pong table swirls around for a few seconds, then flies away! In fact, unlike Twister which mostly showed us the damage from the outside, Night of the Twisters makes us feel much more "inside" the tornado. And it's fun! The scenario is very well done, carefully building up to the climax: the tornado chasing car scene. And the special effects are surprisingly good, right up there with Twister! Wholly recommended to any disaster movie buff.

3 out of 5 stars Not that good.......2007-01-11

Wasnt as accurate and the action was stupid. The father was pinned under his truck and got up soon after and nothing was wrong. I seen alot of movies about twisters and other natural disasters and I think that any tornado movie needs quite abit of work. Tornado's are natural not created by testing of various factors. This movie was good but yet it wasnt at all accurate.

I managed to catch this on the National Geographic channel recently. It has lots of great tornado footage with some science thrown in for fun. Anyone fascinated by the beauty and destructive power of tornadoes (like me) would enjoy this DVD. Also, watching an armored car drive directly into a vortex is definitely worth a look.

My son loves all kinds of bad weather, but tornadoes are his all-time favorite. He got this DVD from my brother for a gift, and we watch it at least 3 times a week. It's great for the kids yet interesting enough to hold the adult audience's attention. The contrast between Josh and Sean is a fantastic way to show how widespread the fascination with lousy weather can be.

There were good intentions in this Muppets adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic Emerald City story of Dorothy's journey to see the Wizard with hopes of fulfilling her dream of stardom: the film is a nostalgic nod to the original 1979 Muppet Movie, where Kermit leaves the swamps for Hollywood to become a star, picking up some friends along the way. Grammy winner Ashanti plays Dorothy Gale, an aspiring singer who serves meatloaf to truckers and lives in a Kansas trailer park with her Aunt Em (Queen Latifah). In the ensuing chaos of a giant tornado, she gets dumped in the Land of Oz—along with her pet shrimp, Toto (Pepe the Prawn). Dorothy soon meets the familiar Scarecrow, Tin man, and Lion (Kermit, Gonzo, and Fozzie, respectively) and together they journey to see the Wizard (voiced by Jeffrey Tambor) who promises to grant her celebrity wish if first she defeats the Wicked Witch of the West (Miss Piggy). While the Muppets have survived a few cinematic flops before, this film is bereft of all they represent--the endearing innocence, engaging silliness, and cagey humor of Jim Henson's legendary variety series. Instead, a mean-spirited cynicism with sexual subtext prevails that is not only unfunny, but also mildly offensive. In a desire to appear edgy and culturally relevant by the filmmakers (and executive producers Brian and Lisa Henson), the timeless spirit of the vintage Muppets is missing, as are the signature voiceovers by Frank Oz and Brian Henson. Onscreen chemistry between actors and Muppets feels contrived, not to mention Quentin Tarantino's bizarre cameo. When Kermit delivers a religious joke of questionable taste, viewers might yearn for the swamp years, when Kermit the frog and the Henson Company could do no wrong. (Ages 4 and older) --Lynn Gibson

    Description

Join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and all the Muppets as they turn everyone's favorite classic tale into a musical madcap adventure that shines brighter than Emerald City! The fun starts when the Muppets team up with an all-star cast that includes Grammy Award winner Ashanti, Oscar(R) nominee Queen Latifah (2002, Best Supporting Actress, CHICAGO), David Alan Grier, Academy Award(R) winner Quentin Tarantino (1994, Best Original Screenplay, PULP FICTION), and Jeffrey Tambor. Ashanti sparkles as Dorothy, an aspiring singer whose dreams of fame and fortune seem worlds away from coming true in the Kansas trailer park where she lives with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. But when a tornado transports her and Toto (Pepe the King Prawn) to the magical land of Oz, Dorothy meets the Wizard, who promises to make her a superstar -- if she and her wacky new friends, the Scarecrow (Kermit), the Tin Thing (Gonzo), and the Cowardly Lion(Fozzie), can defeat Oz's #1 diabolical diva, the Wicked Witch of the West (Miss Piggy)! Featuring original music, hilarious performances, and 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage, THE MUPPETS' WIZARD OF OZ will lift your spirits and blow you away!

    1 out of 5 stars Muppets a Huge Disappointment.......2007-04-17

The Muppet Wizard of Oz was a film that didn't have any magic to it whatsoever. It is highly inappropriate to have sexual references, even in regards to Gonzo's nipples, it is not appropriate for little kids to listen to this sort of garbage. What the hell is up with Brian Henson? Apparently Disney is just trying to follow with everyone else in this sex crazed world. There is no more creativity left and that is just wrong.

In response to someone who left a comment saying that in the old variety shows of the 60's and 70's was there any references to nipples back then? I think not, and references of any kind back then was so hard for a little kid to figure out on their own, they were very much more hidden and more dryer. Nowadays it is just like sexual references are the only thing that is funny out there and it is just sick.

1 out of 5 stars GARBAGE, complete garbage........2007-04-10

Boy was I disappointed. And I knew it was going to be bad, but not this bad. I even waited years to buy a copy. What a waste of money! We couldn't even watch the whole thing, and I'm a huge Muppet fan. The whole hip hop Ashanti thing killed the beginning and not even Kermit could pick up the pieces when he finally appeared on screen. Save your money and stay away from this bomb.

2 out of 5 stars Disney finally gets it's hands on OZ and this is what they come up with?!?!.......2007-01-27

Disappointment doesn't even begin to describe my reaction to the film. It all starts with the writing, obviously this was written by someone who knows little about the Muppets and their humor. There is absolutely no charm or class in this entire film. Ashanti is passible at best, the muppets have no real personality, the effects are an atrocious mix of bad lighting and "Sesame Street" like sets. It also would have been nice to have the music composed by someone who knew what they were doing. If you're going to make a musical, get someone who can do some catchy tunes. Bottom line, if you're an Oz fan or a Muppets fan...give it a once over, but no promises. Chances are, you won't be too happy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence in Family Entertainment.......2007-01-10

This movie is perfect for the whole family. It's a complete movie for once. It has Ashant(II) who is very talented and brings a year 2000 twist on Dorothy and with her aunt and uncle, who would had ever thought but it works well. And one of the most impressive charaters TOTO the Shrimp (Prawn)was absolutely hilarious. I watched the movie with my Son (17) and Daughter (14) and we laughed so hard. I buy 4 family gifts every year for Christmas and with out a doubt this was the BEST!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars pandering to the suits.......2007-01-07

The Muppets have always been edgy in a way that played more to adults and teens than children -- just look back at the variety show. Parents who think otherwise are mistaken.

That's not what really bothered me about this one. What bothered me was the blatant corporate overtake of the Muppet franchise. This was a movie made by suits to try to justify the profitability of the franchise to other suits at Disney who had just bought the franchise.

I could put the old Muppet movies and shows from the 70s and 80s in today and they'd still be funny. Half the references in this one are already passe. It's as if the Muppets have lost their way and, like an insecure adolescent, are looking at what's cool today and trying to emulate it: "Hey, look at me! I'm hip and edgy!" No you're not. You're pathetic because you've lost who you once were and we all know it.

I have no problem with hip and edgy, but the Muppets are better than that. What made the franchise wasn't endless pop references. It was timeless humor. They don't have to stoop to the latest TV reference or pop tart singer to impress the new corporate bosses with high ratings at all costs for one night on ABC.

Muppets' Christmas Carol - now that's good, newer stuff.

Someone needs to step in and save this franchise before it jumps the shark for good.

3 out of 5 stars Really good but yet so stupid.......2007-01-11

Here is yet another example of wishful thinking, it would be nice to perdict storms. But this is really stupid in a way, the guy runs all over the place where tornado's touch down, I agree with the mayor in this one, but however it was really stupid with her being airborne in a tornado and only being pinned beneath the car without a scratch. Also they said that there wasnt a building left in the town yet you see many in the background still standing. I am not a fan of PAX movies but at least the tornado's looked better.

5 out of 5 stars Good Plot and Great Special Effects.......2006-01-01

This PAX original movie has wonderful special effects--some of the tornadoes look like actual tornadoes instead of CGI! The plot is good as well. Gerald McRaney (Promised Land) gives an outstanding performance as Jake Arledge, a storm chaser who tries to prove to his estranged daughter (Thea Gill) and nearly everyone else that his tornado warning system really DOES work.

If you're a fan of tornadoes or family movies I highly recommend this!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS; FINE PAX MOVIE.......2005-07-18

This is a PAX network film about 90 minutes long. It stars Gerald McRaney (Promised Land, Major Dad and Simon and Simon fame)as a meteorologist (storm chaser) who at the beginning predicts a tornado and it doesn't happen due to a computer snafu. His daughter is part of a newteam of storm chasers covering the tornadoes. Enter a young man who helps him discover the computer snafu and presto!! the warnings in the state of Oklahoma are there for everyone to believe in or not. There is a city that is celebrating its 100th anniversary where a tornado is to hit on the day of the festivities. The town mayor is played by TV veteran Joan Van Ark. Her character is the one flaw in the film because her acting is so bad which is unusual for Van Ark. Anyhow she convinves the people not to believe in the Tornado warning and that all will go on as scheduled.

This movie is predictable, yet fun to watch. The acting, with the exception of Joan Van Ark who is really quite terrible (why she chose to do this film is beyond me...) is quite good. Gerald McRaney is at his solid, stalwart best, as usual. The girl who plays his daughter is fine and the boy who fixes the computer snafus and becomes McRaney's partner is o.k. What makes this film palatable are the special effects. They are really great and the movie is informative as well as to what to do if you are involved in a tornado or one is in your path. There are some implausible and unbelievable actions by the characters but for the most part, I enjoyed this film immensely. The DVD quality is fine. No extras are included. For PAX entertainment, wholesome family values this film is great to watch.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-01-10

Excellent footage, scene set up, and computer graphics. You are "there" for each event. The computer graphics allow you to "see" what is happening beneath the surface during an earthquake, as well as educating you on volcanic activity. The narrative was very informative, however for some inexplicable reason the volume starts dropping at a certain point for a few minutes. A tad annoying, but easily fixed, though you might miss the first few words. There could be a tendency, when putting together a film like this, to over-dramatize, however, the filmmakers resist and we get a reasonable presentation of the facts. I would highly recommend this well done documentary. Be sure to watch the bonus features.

    2 out of 5 stars Not enough.......2005-03-10

This video is very short and doesn't have a lot of content. Thier are some great sceens but overall its nothing you havn't seen before. I would have liked to see some avalanches and better explanations of all natural disasters with more depth.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2005-01-12
