Description

The New York Fire Fighting Department is probably one of the most efficient and organized forces of its kind that the modern world has ever known. It needs to be, considering the complexity of that particular city. However, the limitations that professional fire fighting units faced between the `20s and `40s were severe. Technology as we know it today was still science fiction back then, as is clearly evidenced by the footage from the famous Stillman Fires Collection included in the 2-DVD set New York's Bravest - A Firefighting Odyssey (the first installment of a dual release on this subject). It is hard to picture the scenario as it was back then, with fire fighting carriages having to evolve from horse-drawn and steam-propelled to the more advanced motor-driven versions, and the severe restrictions of low-powered water jets.

These films are obviously a public relations effort. However, what comes across, more than anything else, is the sheer courage of men and women who had few of the protective devices and professional equipment of the present age at their disposal. Both from a historical and human interest perspective, the Stillman films make for captivating viewing. The world of yesteryear burnt just as readily as the contemporary version, it would seem - the clips of fires at New York as well as various locations such as Boston and London bring this out beyond doubt. It is an inborn human trait to rise above the problems of disaster, but we had better not forget what we had to learn over and over again as a result of our own carelessness!

As technology and technique evolved, so did the effectiveness of the New York Fire Department. Inventions like the Conran Monorail Nozzle system forever changed the danger-fraught world of professional fire fighters. All in all, a great educational tour de force made all the more effective by the rudimentary photography.

I have reviewed several A2Z products and I stand by my admiration for the product. I am a student and these are very convenient. My professor of advertising owns the bundle pack and he loves it. Resellers prices are definately worth it.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste.......2006-11-30

I am a fire chief and fire warden. I've been in this business for decades. This DVD was SO disappointing. Silent black & white film sections of old firefighting, dorky background music, repeated scenes. This material is of such low quality, I am amazed that Amazon is selling it. I guess I just learned to really be careful reading the reviews. I hope this one helps you avoid buying this product. I will try to return it for 50% refund.

1 out of 5 stars Whats This!.......2006-11-30

I just purchased NEW YORKS BRAVEST-A FIRE FIGHTERS ODYSSEY.Sadly i was very dissapointed in what i got, believe me i have the highest respect for firefighters all over the world but i think this was just a way to cash in on 9/11. firstly my DVD looked like it was run off in someones bedroom on a burner, the cover looks to me like a photocopy of the original, ok so the quality of the footage is old so there`s no telling if its the original, i have bought many dvds connected to new york firefighters and never quibbled over the price but this time i have to, $24.95 is way above the the value of what i received, and finally i will choose very carefully what i buy in future...

5 out of 5 stars A History Lesson .......2006-05-02

Post 9/11 people have given a good deal of thought to the firefighters in New York - as well they should. These guys put their lives on the line for a minimum amount of reward simply to help the rest of us out.

This DVD brings that point home by showing us vintage clips from the 1920s and 1930s (in silent and black and white) showing firemen (they were all men then) knocking down fires with the most primitive equipment I've ever seen.

It's very dramatic and the director catches flames well.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Content Ruined By A Disorganized Series Of Episodes........2006-03-24

Additionally titled BURNING MAN and FLASH FIRE for its various releases, this Australian made film, shot in New South Wales is problematic for its producers from its outset due to several personality conflicts and extended shooting time that prematurely uses up its allocated budget, and although the storyline is at times nicely detailed, below standard post-production finishing and overmuch cutting jettisons the affair. Tom Skerritt plays as Howard Anderson, an American entrepreneur with a "passion for building" who is in process of erecting a tourist hotel in the Blue Mountains region, all the while unaware that his business partner, Julian Fane (Guy Doleman) has insured the incomplete structure for ten million dollars, far more than its actual worth, and plans its destruction as corollary to normal summer brush fires in order to collect a handsome sum through fraud. In line with this illicit scheme, Fane arranges for an arsonist to perform the incendiary deed, a young man who also happens to be the boyfriend of Anderson's daughter, and due to the future resort's being in the midst of a critical fire hazard sector (one of the many unexplained elements of the screenplay) Julian has every expectation that his dastardly design will come about without serious hindrance. As the local insurance firm victimized by the crime is majority owned by Fane, the policy's naturally skeptical underwriters, Lloyd's of London, deploy senior investigator George Engels (James Mason) to probe into the nature of the felony, made more sinister because of the death, possibly a homicide, of an insurance investigator (Wendy Hughes) who, in following clues was apparently coming close to the cause of the arson. The setting for the film is the week before Christmas, capstone of summer in the Antipodes, a dramatic background, but the links within the story are not smoothly compounded, resulting in the presentation of events that are rather difficult for a viewer to follow, a problem heightened by erratic editing, the mentioned heavy cutting, and poor sound and picture quality. Skerritt's semi-comatose and droning style is fatally invalidated by this dim sound processing but Mason is very effective, as ever, and enjoys the best dialogue with Hughes impressive as the too early written-out investigator; Doleman wins acting laurels with his performance as the malevolent Julian Fane.

5 out of 5 stars Support Firefighters.......2006-05-24

This is not the normal thing I order here, because I'm more interseted in history and life lessons. But, my grandson just became a fireman and I wanted to get him a nice gift, so I purchased this. He sent me a nice note and said that everyone at the firehouse watched them with him and they thought that the way the director captured the fires was very realistic and they then had a discussion about how they would have fought the blazes and learnd from the experience. I can't ask for more than that for a history of fire.

5 out of 5 stars Very Complete.......2006-05-02

I could not be happier with this collection. The films come from a the turn of the century up to roughly the end of the 1930s and early 1940s and gave me a decent overall sense of how fires were fought before the advent of modern technical firestop teams.

You can go either way when you think about these films - some seem to be telling a story of brave dudes overcoming heavy odds to stop huge blazes, while other clips are interesting just for the way the director managed to capture the dancing of the flames on film.

The fact that they are filmed in silence adds an eerie quality to the production and it took me several days to get through all of the footage.

Description

Fire. On the one hand, mankind's ultimate tool. Left unchecked, mankind's most vengeful nemesis. It is possible that, even today, we have not fully exploited all the possible benefits of fire, but we have certainly witnessed what can happen when it runs rampant. The power that fire has given us must always been seen in this context - with great power comes great responsibility.

California has had its share of fire-related tragedies, and these have constantly redefined how the state's fire fighting departments approach the potential for disaster. Few of us realize that fighting fire is on par with modern warfare - the unvarying object being to cut losses of human life and property. What can happen in a densely populated state like California when fire breaks out must be seen to believed - and that is precisely what California Burning, the captivating DVD by A2ZCDS, showcases.

Fire fighting techniques are constantly evolving. As civilization finds new ways to inhabit this planet, fire finds new ways to wreak destruction. The film clips included in this DVD document some of the landmark moments in California's fire fighting force's history - for instance, the 1923 Berkeley blaze that left little to sort through afterwards, and a San Francisco lumberyard conflagration 1955 that effectively illustrates the immense industrial loss that can result from insufficient fire prevention parameters.

The authorities of America's most glamorous state have, at al times, attempted to educate the general population on how to prevent and survive such outbreaks, and some of their efforts are included in this compilation. All in all, this DVD is both fascinating and educational in its historical content, which carries a clear message into the present and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Good Flame Shots.......2006-07-21

Anyone who has ever tried to take a picture of a fire knows how hard it is to "capture flame" in the shot. Hence, why this DVD is so good. It's nothing but photos and films of fires and their aftermath and it has some of the best vintage "flame shots" I've ever seen. It's better than the STillman clips of the same era. I highly reccomend it.

Description

I still remember vividly when some of the issues raised in the DVD Fire - Safeguard Your Family! were current and pressing ones. Smokey the Bear, I recall, was one of the most influential media that the Government could have dreamed up to educate the public about forest fire hazards. He spoke to the common family, not down at them - and that made all the difference. To see him again on this retrospective collection, fulfilling for the first time the purpose he was invented for, was a revelation.

I am amazed at how sincerely the Government addressed the escalating threat of fire in urban homes across the USA. Seen in the excellent viewpoint of hindsight that this DVD offers, one must admit that the effort to inform and prepare American citizenry about fire prevention techniques was a massive and effective one. We do take the fruits of modern living for granted, don't we? It's quite unimaginable that fire detectors were a novelty back in the 1940s and `50s - yet, the 1958 film clip by ADT clearly indicates that America had to be sold on the idea.

The fact remains that over 3,400 people die in home-related fires every year. When is the last time you and your family have sat down and thought the issue of fire prevention through? The material contained in this DVD is of timeless significance, and makes for excellent discussion. I strongly recommend that you earmark the next family weekend for this…there is a lot at stake.

5 out of 5 stars Good Safety Film To Show Your Family.......2006-05-04

If I had children I'd want to sit them down and make them watch every minute of this safety film. It coudl save their lives - literally.

YOu see clearly demonstrated all of the basic fire safety information you need to know - from checking the battery in yoru fire detector to "stop drop and roll" to ways to get out of a burning house without chocking to death on smoke.

On the entertainment end there is a good anti forest fire clip with Smokey Bear.

All in all a solid educational film.
