Description
BRAIN DONORS is the hilarious story about a wealthy widow Lillian (Nancy Marchand) who decides to found a ballet company after getting legal advice from her lawyer Roland Flakfizer (Turturro). Before long, she has two incapable assistants including a useless jack-of-all-trades and master of none named Jacques (Nelson) and Rocco (Smith) who is a cab driver whose credentials include pool cleaner, liposuctioner and toupee salesman. The result is an outrageously funny attack on high society as the characters unintentionally create a mess out of every endeavor.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious & Entertaining.......2007-05-30
My husband first showed me this movie when we were just college sweethearts, and because I was a serious ballet dancer and I also loved corny comedies, he knew I would love this movie. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves physical (and sometimes ridiculous) comedy. My favorite scene is the one of the serious ballet dancers of Swan Lake amidst the giant yellow duck being persued by hunters. You will laugh throughout the entire movie and be highly entertained.
hahahaha.......2007-05-25
I love this movie. I saw it when I was a little kid and I wanted it to be released on dvd for years! Finally it did, I love it even more! It's old comedy but it's great.
Funny, but could have been better.......2007-05-10
A Marx Brothers homage with John Turturro in the Groucho role. Plot is incidental with some scenes directly out of Marx Brothers films. Unfortunately the other two actors opposite Turturro are not nearly as funny. Still, good for a few laughs when you're in the mood.
A True Cult Movie.......2007-03-01
A short word on Brain Donors (1992): Get it. I don't even think it was featured for a full week at the cinemas, but it made cable and that's where I found it. It is truly a great fast talking Marx Brothers movie--but made fifty years later. John Turturro is Groucho, Mel Smith is an English Chico and Bob Nelson is not quite a mute Harpo. But that's all right, we needed a new Marx Brother movie anyhow, and these guys will do. It's truly a clone of "Night At The Opera" but dressed up nineties-style and ballet instead of opera. So get it anyway and be prepared to laugh. By the way it came from the group that did Naked Gun and Hot Shots! movies, so you will know what you are in for. Enjoy!
An affectionate and hilarious tribute to the Brothers Marx.......2006-11-22
Whether or not you have ever seen a Marx Brothers movie, BRAIN DONORS will make you laugh out loud. Writer Pat Proft, Director Dennis Dugan and head wackos the Zucker Brothers have crafted a tribute to the kings of anarchic comedy. Specifically modeled on A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, John Turturro has the Groucho part, Bob Nelson has Harpo (and he gets to talk, too!), British comic Mel Smith has Chico, Nancy Marchand takes Margaret Dumont's role, and everyone has a grand time. From the opening Claymation titles to the climactic destruction of a ballet, it's fast, furious and very, very funny. BRAIN DONORS came on the tail end of the AIRPLANE-inspired comedies of the Eighties, so not very many people saw it in theatres the first time around. Fortunately, we now have it on DVD. Enjoy!

Description
Twenty-three year old Santiago returns home from the Peruvian army ill-prepared to cope with the realities of life. Haunted by his violent military past, he is conflicted by his desire for education and his temptation to join his comrades in a decadent life of crime. Unofficial synopsis (from Seattle Film Festival): Think Taxi Driver in Peru. A 23-year-old war veteran returns to Lima after spending six years fighting terrorists, the Peruvian drug mafia, and a nationalist war against Ecuador. Unable to smoothly transition back home, his life starts to spin out of control.
Customer Reviews:
Powerfull movie!.......2006-06-23
After five years, a man returns from the war. He was acoustomed to a militar life, he was used to patrol, to hide, to kill. But the conflict stoped and he had to return. But he doesn't know how to live and act, how to interact with people in a caotic city without rules and order.
Santiago tries to put his own rules in this new life. He see the city as a new war, and he to transport his fears to this place. In his mind he's constantly living a nightmare, he's something like a savior in the city, a man who has to act when injustice comes. Santiago tries to fit in Lima, but he's still trapped in his own mental war. Is interesting the way the director has emulate this mental disorder and fragmentation using abrupt cuts, film textures and hand camera shots.
I'm from Peru and let me tell you, Josué Mendez first opus is one of the best movies produced in this country. The awards given to "Dias de Santiago" are the proof that we are in front of a masterpiece. Give it a try, you'll be hooked from beginning to end...
FIlm fest discovery.......2006-05-02
Saw this at the Latin American Film Festival in Providence, RI last year (2005) and was blown away. Beautifully crafted from scene to scene and keeps building until the last, excruciating scene. I can tell you that everyone in the theater was holding their breath when the film ended and let out one huge sigh! No one got up to leave for a couple of minutes - very powerful. Kudos to a great film maker.
Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome in Peru.......2005-12-12
Peruvian writer/director Josue Mendez has made a brave little low budget film that deals with a subject currently burgeoning our hospitals in this country as the fallout of the war on Iraq and still plagues the veterans of the Vietnam War - Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (aka Battle Rattle). This is a difficult topic to dramatize without being preachy or maudlin, but Mendez has succeeded where others have failed.
Santiago (Pietro Sibille) is a 23-year-old retired veteran who was conscripted at age 16 and trained to be a killer - assigned to fighting in the war against Ecuador, against terrorists, and against the drug mafia. He returns to his family in Lima a damaged, broken, paranoid misfit who tries to leave his military past behind but mentally returns to it as the only time he felt important. Unable to work he finally begins to drive a taxi and encounters all manner of passengers - wealthy men, girls on the party circuit, disreputable people of all types. He tries desperately to adjust to the post-military life, but find his family in shambles, a wholly dysfunctional unit to which he can no longer relate. How he finds his 'place' in this chaos is the subject of Mendez' story (Mendez has based this on a true story/stories and knows his subject well).
Pietro Sibille as Santiago delivers a credible performance, one that consistently borders on fragmentation of a mind deeply scarred by war and fighting. The remainder of the cast is fine. Mendez uses a mixture of black and white film with color segments and this is distracting to annoying: if the choices of film related consistently to a tenor in the story (which is not the case) then this technique could be considered artistic.
The manner in which the story is related is very much in keeping with the fragmented and paranoid mindset of Santiago and for this the director is to be commended for successfully achieving the next to impossible! Many strong points to a film that is flawed by technical problems. Grady Harp, December 05

Description
Sometimes the game of love requires a little cheating
The Other Side of the Bed is a raucous and sexy romantic comedy with a musical twist. The film tells the story of two couples, along with a collection of their friends and co-workers, whose switching back and forth between lovers leads to lies and heartache - and lots of song and dance.

In Repply To Constanzo From Venezuela.......2005-11-03
The Sense of humor in this movie is stupid i stand for my position, Sorry Constanzo and about Cantinflas well.........I dont know how to say this, Charlie Chaplin stated once that Cantinflas were one of the greatest Comedians in the History, should i take your opinion or Chaplins opinion? wow! hard desition(ironic tone), and Chapulin colorado sketechs well, they have more than 25 years they were made and Argentina keeps enjoying them as well Colombia and even your Beautifull by the way Country.
Besides if you can recall the names of Cantinflas and Chapulin Colorado it must be for something , Cantinflas is famous worldwide because he acted too in Hollywood productions also Hanna-Barbera produced cartoon series whit his character, and Chapulin Colorado is adored in all latin America , i dont think you can say the same for any comedian from Spain or from Venezuela, comeon give me names.
One more thing, You dont fool anyone using terms such as "post Franco" i dont think youre intellectual
HM
A musical twist for a nice light-spirited movie.......2005-07-12
The musical twist of this film makes it kind of surrealistic and funny. The movie reflects a light-spirited and delicate sense of humor typical of post-Franco Spain. Acting is good and you feel that actors are enjoying and living their parts. By the way, It is funny that the guy from Guadalajara (Mexico) criticizes spanish sense of humor. Mexico is perhaps the country I know with the worse and coarser sense of humor ever. Just remember the horrible Cantiflas movies and the pathetic Chapulin Colorado!!!
Friendship and betrayal, but all in a very light vein..........2005-03-15
Pedro (Guillermo Toledo) is heartbroken because Paula (Natalia Verbeke), his girlfriend, broke up with him. He tries to find comfort in his friends, Javier (Ernesto Alterio) and Sonia (Paz Vega). But wait a little... Isn't Javier the man that Paula left Pedro for?. That is merely the beginning of an entertaining story, that will make you laugh, and sometimes even think a little.
This film talks about friendship and betrayal, but all in a very light vein due to the fact that the people involved can't keep their lies straight. The fact that this movie includes a lot of musical scenes also helps to avoid the gloomy atmosphere that generally pervades in a movie with this kind of subject.
Regarding the actors, they are all quite good in their roles, but in my opinion the real star here was Natalia Verbeke as Paula, a young woman searching for love without being able to find it. I haven't seen many of her movies, but she really shines in this one. The script was also quite good, and there are moments when the spectator thinks he is taking part of a meeting between friends, where the nature of women and relationships is being discussed by men who don't really seem to know too much about either of those subjects. Don't expect enlightening remarks because you won't find them, but be ready to laugh a lot when a casual comment is just too bizarre to let it go without doing something.
On the whole, I think that this film is quite good and I give it 3.5 stars out of 5. It is entertaining, and funny at times, but it isn't the kind of movie you will want to see ten times in a row. All the same, I recommend it to you, because you will probably enjoy this movie a lot if you watch it just once.

"I'm hot all over.".......2005-03-04
When Paula (Natalia Verbeke) abruptly breaks up with long-time boyfriend Pedro (Guillermo Toledo), he's a mess, and he decides to seek solace from good friends Javier (Ernesto Alterio) and Sonia (Paz Vega). Pedro tries to puzzle out exactly why Paula left, and he can only conclude that there's another man ...
This energetic, funny, Spanish film tackles an old familiar subject--infidelity. All of the main characters are involved in relationships, and they are all unfaithful. Most of the infidelity requires the characters to go to great lengths in order to achieve deceit, and while you may ask yourself why they bother, the antics of the characters are laugh out loud funny. If the film "The Other Side of the Bed" is lacking in thematic originality, it makes up for this gap with original, strong humour.
The film includes scenes of amazing, almost painful, insights. In one scene, four of the male characters are in a bar downing beers, and they are discussing their favourite topic--women. Pedro is urged to find someone new, and another character reminds Pedro of all the beautiful available women. It's at this moment, that taxi driver, Rafa (Alberto San Juan) launches into a soliloquy about his success with women. This character's scenes are some of the funniest in the film. Also especially delightful is the character of the private detective who has unique theories on the deaths of Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe
I was initially reluctant to watch "The Other Side of the Bed" due to the fact that it is touted as a musical, and I am still traumatized by a childhood exposure to "The Sound of Music." Circumstances, however, brought the film my way, and I found it quite delightful. The musical numbers are subtle, and do NOT intrude at all into the story. The numbers are performed as a sort of postmodern ballet--I can only compare the style to Alvin Ailey ballet (but not as good). The film is in Spanish with English subtitles--displacedhuman
