Season two of this series is a good as season one but has the advantage that it takes links from season one and follows them through so we have Chris finally finding out who killed his family and Vin [...] the trail of the man who framed him for murder. Along with this we still get the interaction of the seven very different personalities and the situations they get into protecting the town.

The Magnificent Seven is the greatest television series ever, period. It only lasted two seasons, but it could have gone ten if TV series were renewed on quality rather than ratings.

Start with seven men who seemed to be born to play these roles. Whether they were gunfighters, a gambler, a healer, a holy man, a womanizer, or a kid wanna-be, these guys were all perfectly cast. Add in the striking blonde Laurie Holden as Mary Travis and Robert Vaughn as Judge Travis and the regular characters are top-notch and perfect. I also have to throw in a kudo to one of my old acting coaches, Karen Hensel, who appears from time-to-time in this series as a storekeeper. The sets and costuming were always authentic. The stories were consistent with what we want to believe about the old west. Each episode of this series is a one-hour vacation into a time past, where we all want to go from time to time.

We have seen these men cast in subsequent roles - such as Eric Close (One of my favorite actors, who plays Vin Tanner in this series) as an FBI investigator in "Without A Trace," - and although they are all great talents, they will never again be cast in roles that so perfectly fit them.

I was ecstatic when I was able to buy the first season on DVD, and now that I own both seasons, I never have to worry about "not having anything to watch."

I absolutely believe this is the greatest television series ever. I would be hard pressed to imagine a series would come along and be more enjoyable.

It's been a long time coming for all of us M7 fans, but the wait is almost over. We fought the good fight to keep the show on the air, but CBS had no faith. Now we can relive the thrills all over again!

An air race from London to Paris provides the premise for this marvelous comedy, which features thrilling aerial photography and some stupefying stunt flying. It's set in 1910, when the (lovingly re-created) airplanes of the period were likelier to sputter and crash than they were to go in a straight line. The international contest requires an international cast, including Stuart Whitman as a cowboy American interested in the ladylove (Sarah Miles) of an English ace (James Fox). Alberto Sordi and Gert Frobe represent the Italian and German nations; Terry-Thomas plans frightful sabotage for race day. From the jaunty opening song and the great opening-credits drawings by Gerald Searle onward, the movie has a pleasingly breezy tone that sits well with the meticulous flying sequences. This is a delightful example of a certain kind of internationally flavored film of the period, somewhat similar to The Great Race, released the same year (1965). --Robert Horton

Millionaire businessman Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) is also a high-stakes thief; his latest caper is an elaborate heist at a Boston bank. Why does he do it? For the same reason he flies gliders, bets on golf strokes, and races dune buggies: he needs the thrill to feel alive. Insurance investigator Vicky Anderson (Faye Dunaway) gets her own thrills by busting crooks, and she's got Crown in her cross hairs. Naturally, these two will get it on, because they have a lot in common: they're not people, they're walking clothes racks. The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) is a catalog of '60s conventions, from its clipped editing style to its photographic trickery (the inventive Haskell Wexler behind the camera) to its mod design. You can almost sense director Norman Jewison deciding to "tell his story visually," like those newfangled European films; this would explain the long passages of Michel Legrand's lounge jazz ladled over endless montages of the pretty Dunaway and McQueen at play. (The opening-credits song, "Windmills of Your Mind," won an Oscar.) It's like a "What Kind of Man Reads Playboy?" ad come to life, and much more interesting as a cultural snapshot than a piece of storytelling.

Junior Bonner (1972) is director Sam Peckinpah's lovely, elegiac look at the world of the rodeo--and his only film with nary a bullet wound. Steve McQueen, engagingly easygoing but determined, is the title character, a rodeo rider out to win a big bull-riding contest in his hometown. Even as he confronts his dwindling days on the circuit, he also must deal with his feuding parents, marvelously played by Robert Preston and Ida Lupino. Preston is particularly good as the randy old con artist; he and Lupino strike real sparks. Peckinpah's slow-motion camera is put to particularly good use filming the balletic violence of the rodeo, at once more terrifying and awe-inspiring than any gun battle. A lovely country-western valentine to a dying breed.

Yul Brynner returns to lead a new band of gunfighters in this sequel to the classic Magnificent Seven, which delivers enough Western action to please genre fans. Return has Brynner's Chris recruiting a new Seven to rescue original member Chico (Julian Mateos, replacing Horst Buchholz), who has been kidnapped by a bandit (Emilio Fernandez). The Magnificent Seven is such an established critical and fan favorite that comparisons between it and Return will inevitably yield negative reactions, and while some aspects of the second film are inferior (in particular, a colorless new Seven, save for veteran scene-stealers Claude Akins and Warren Oates), it's capably directed by Western specialist Burt Kennedy, who is aided in no small part by returning composer Elmer Bernstein's rousing score.
