Description
BRUCE LEE: A DRAGON STORY Bruce Lee's Life Both on and off the Screen Bruce Li (Bruce Lee the Invincible, Bruce Lee: The Man, the Myth) portrays the legendary Bruce Lee, who died in 1973 at the age of thirty-two, in this biography concentrating on his film work and personal life. Beginning with his years in the United States, during which he runs a martial arts school and marries Linda Lee Cadwell, the film depicts his first step towards stardom as Kato on the 1966 series, The Green Hornet. Returning to Hong Kong, he works with director Lo Wei on two international hits and then persuades their producer, Raymond Chow, to finance his long-standing dream of directing himself in Return of the Dragon. Also shown are the constant challenges to his martial arts mastery offscreen; his affair with actress Betty Ting Pei, in whose home he passed away; and his untimely death of a brain edema at the peak of his fame. ©1980 Ocean Shores Video Ltd. This enjoyable and touching biography of martial-arts film star Bruce Lee stars Jason Scott Lee (no relation), an actor with a lively face and natural intensity, who makes every moment of this film compelling. Directed by Rob Cohen, Dragon traces Bruce Lee's slow rise over myriad obstacles--most of them race-based--to become an international superstar in films. Lee's origins are oddly set in San Francisco instead of his real home in Seattle, but then again there is plenty of artistic license going on as Cohen explores the actor's psyche through some powerful fantasy sequences. Lauren Holly is good as Lee's wife, Linda (whose book about her late husband inspired this movie). A scene involving Bruce's rescue of son Brandon (who died in a filmmaking accident in 1993) from a murderous spirit is plain spooky. The special-edition DVD release has a widescreen presentation, director interview, featurette, screen tests, closed captioning, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Bruce Lee Story.......2007-06-09

Story was well written, and Bruce's part was portrayed by his son, who is the most qualified to play his part.

4 out of 5 stars Imitating Bruce....?.......2007-03-19

Well lets start this by saying no one can can emulate Bruce Lee!!!! But, u gotta give Jason Scott Lee props for doing this movie ( plus he can act)....he did a great job considering the pressure he was under. Yeah we know that there are parts that inacurate but, remember it didn't say the true story! Great acting, Great fight scenes (could've had more) but very well put together...it's still a collectors item ! Plus i gotta give any of my fellow Jeet Kune Do' brothers props for portraying the art of JKD' so people will better understand what Bruce Lee went through to share his art with the world! Put this one in ya collectors group!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-19

I love this movie. I'll never get tired of this movie. Don't be fooled because it is the Bruce Lee Story. This Movie has more than just martial arts. I recommend it to everyone

5 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining.......2007-01-15

I'm not the biggest Bruce Lee fan in the world (heck, I haven't even seen one of his movies) but I thoroughly enjoyed this Dragon movie that follows the important events of his life.

We see him working as a dishwasher in Japan until he's offered a chance to go to college in America. When he takes advantage of this opportunity, he meets ultra-hot blonde chick Lauren Holly and they shower together and stuff. After graduation he struggles to open a martial arts school, and has a few bouts with a giant imaginary demon that has followed him from Japan to America. In addition to that, he has to fight a devestating paralysis while his wife (Lauren Holly) is pregnant with their first child. Man, talk about an uphill battle.

He is inspired to write a martial arts book during his recovery at the hospital and demonstrates its effectiveness in a martial arts ring, against the very man who paralyzed him in the first place. Some big shot producers see this and decide to put him in a bunch of action movies.

Too bad the darn imaginary demon just won't go away. In Bruce Lee's last vision, the demon abducts his firstborn son. Of course, Bruce flies into a rage and ends up choking the giant monster down with nunchucks. That's pretty much the end of the movie, and the last thing we see is a shot of Bruce Lee training a whole horde of martial arts students from his many, many opened schools. Great story, great action, and man, I like Lauren Holly.

1 out of 5 stars inaccuracy of the real Bruce.......2006-12-18

To me, it is dissappointing.. Perhaps I'm narrow minded.. but judging from what I know from the documentary DVD "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey"..

1. He didn't broke his back because somebody kicked him from the back, he had it because an overtrain.
2. This movie portray Bruce as someone easily seduced by women before he was married.. I don't believe such a deep philosopher like that would do something silly such as seduced by the woman in the restaurant the first time he to got to america.
3. In the match where a combat was offered to decide upon his rights to teach other non-chinese students, according to Bruce Lee's wife LInda Lee.. she watched that match..

I think this movie is just like the case with Jet Li's fearless. People need to tell accurate stories, because this can be used as guide by youngsters and elders in order to pursue a better life.

Let people know what is the true story of Bruce Lee.

5 out of 5 stars STORY OF THE DRAGON IS KUNG FU MANIA!.......2004-03-14

This is a GREAT movie. Yeah it's old and the picture is full of lines and everything but so what? I don't really care. This is better than RUSH HOUR. Jackie Chan is no match for Bruce Lee. Everyone knows that. Bruce Lee fans will enjoy this movie. I know I did.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BRUCE LI MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-02-28

BRUCE LI. The successor to the late Bruce Lee, stars in what I consider the best movie ever made. Bruce Li is my HERO! My idol. Bruce plays a cook in San Francisco who is fired for fighting. Bruce opens a kung fu school but others don't like it. He falls out with a kung fu school owned by Mr Grace and in the final showdown, Bruce takes on Mr Grace and his entire kung fu school. If you're a Bruce Li fan, I reccomend you get this in the DRAGON 4 PACK from videoasia. It contains the original print of the film entitled BRUCE LEE'S DEADLY KUNG FU (a.k.a. Bruce Lee's Secret). The picture quality is pretty bad but remember that this is a low budget 1970's kung fu flick. Overall, I think this is the best Bruce Li movie and anybody who likes to see great fights will love it! A classic!

4 out of 5 stars Give it a chance, people!.......2004-01-15

I agree 100 percent with DARKGENIUS!
I think people are too hard on Bruce Li and his movies.
I've been collecting Kung Fu movies since the 80's.
(I even paid $80 several years ago for an Encylopedia of Kung Fu movies. Yes, encyclopedia's for this genre do exist!!)
"Bruce Lee's Deadly Kung Fu" is one of my all-time top
ten favorites!
One of the main reasons I love this film so much is that
the dialouge is so bad, IT'S GOOD! It's classic 70's!
One example, is when the "San Francisco Kid"(white guy)first comes in with the chinese guy(who always played a "traitor" in several Bruce Lee films), says, "Ha, ha, ha! Don't worry. Ha, ha. I'll make them sorry they stared this! Ha, ha, ha."
They made him sound like "Butthead"(from Beavis & Butthead!)
It's ...classic. There's nothing else like this genre!

Lastly, I would also like to point out that the fight scenes
are excellent(none of the ... wire-work that's rampant now-a-days)! And the story is not half bad either.

5 out of 5 stars One of Bruce Li's most impressive films.......2003-10-24

I love this movie, but my praise will have to wait until I make sure a few important facts are established for those out there unfamiliar with Bruceploitation films. First and foremost, Bruce Lee does not appear in this picture, nor does it have the first thing to do with the real Bruce Lee; the star of the film is Ho Chung Tao (aka Li Shao Lung), better known as Bruce Li. I wasn't that impressed with Li in the first couple of films I saw, but I have now come to understand why he is regarded by and large as the best of the Bruce Lee clones (and I might point out he never really embraced the concept of being renamed after his idol). It is unfair to even compare him to Bruce Lee because Li is a pretty darn good martial arts star in his own right. With this movie, he has won me over completely. Another important fact about this film concerns the title: these Bruceploitation films of the mid- to late-70s are notorious for having different titles. This 1976 film is probably best known as Bruce Lee's Deadly Kung Fu, although you may very well see it called Bruce Lee's Secret or Story of the Dragon; additional but less common titles include Bruce Li's Jeet Kune Do, A Dragon Story, and He's a Legend, He's a Hero. You really have to be careful when buying Bruceploitation films such as this because each movie bears multiple titles.

As for the movie itself, the plot is a very familiar one. Li plays "Bob" Lee, a young Chinese man working in San Francisco; he and his friend are bullied by a trio of thugs, and Bob's decision to teach the guys a little respect for the Chinese lands him and his buddy out of work. For some reason, the scraggly American guys Bob put a licking on exercise some control over Chinatown, making it very difficult for our hero to find a new job. When he does get a job working on the docks, the roughnecks show up along with some of their friends to beat everybody there up. Bob finally has to do his thing again, after which his coworkers convince him to open his own school and teach them kung fu. If you've seen The Chinese Connection (or just about any other martial arts film), you know this means trouble with the schools already in existence (all of which are, of course, rife with bad guys). Well, as you can well imagine, the conflict escalates. Two things make this particular film a little different, though. For one, Bob is defeated at one point by what I assume was supposed to be some type of Japanese karate expert, forcing him to rethink his strategy and thereby come up with his own personalized form of kung fu. This provides a window in which a tiny bit of the essence of kung fu is explained to the audience. Second, in the final conflict, Bob has to deal with an unusual weapon, which makes the predictable climax a little more interesting.

A good many Bruceploitation fans don't seem to care for Bruce Lee's Deadly Kung Fu, but I loved it. As I said, the plot is pretty similar to that of many a martial arts film, but this story works for me, particularly with the emphasis Bob places on disproving the idea that the Chinese are cowards; everyone who gets in his way is made to respect the Chinese. Some who know more about kung fu than I do (and I basically know nothing about it) aren't that impressed with the fight scenes featured in the movie, but I thought they were outstanding. Bruce Li impressed me more here than in any other of his movies I have seen so far. The action is fast and furious, particularly the one fight between Bob and the Japanese assassin sent to kill him. The final battle scenes were especially good, as Bob had to single-handedly go through several heavy layers of bad guys in order to reach the man he was really after.

Formulaic it may be, but Bruce Lee's Deadly Kung Fu is one of my favorite Bruceploitation films, and Bruce Li impressed the heck out of me with his fighting skills in this one. It can be hard for a fan of the real Bruce Lee to embrace the string of Bruceploitation films that were churned out in the years after his death, and many a Lee fan will not watch any of them. As long as they do nothing to tarnish the image of Lee, however, I can't get enough of them, and Bruce Lee's Deadly Kung Fu is one of the best ones out there.

5 out of 5 stars STORY OF THE DRAGON.......2003-10-22

Classic kung fu movie! Bruce Lee stars in this action-packed cheesy 1970's kung fu movie featuring hilarious dubbing and exciting kung fu. Based on a true story, Bruce comes to San Francisco and and starts a kung fu school. He quickly makes enemies from other schools and after escaping death, Bruce realises that his traditional kung fu moves are not that effective against American street fighting so he creates his own style, Jee Kune Do and combats his enemies in spectacular battles. Bruce plays Bob. Or at least I think it's Bob. He is refered to as Bruce once. I reccomend Story of the Dragon if you like great action movies.

2 out of 5 stars Worth a Few Laughs.......2005-06-26

"Bruce Lee: A Dragon Story" was probably the first of the phony, exploitative Bruce Lee biopics that came out shortly after his death. This one stars everyone's favourite Bruce Lee clone, Bruce Li. This mind-bogglingly innacurate movie pseudo-traces Bruce Lee's life from working in the United States on "The Green Hornet" to going back to Hong Kong to work for Golden Harvest Studios and director Lo Wei. These are about the only facts that it gets right, though, with Bruce Lee's alleged affair with Betty Ting Pei dominating the story (even going so far as to have Betty miscarry Bruce's child!). It blows big time, but honestly, it's good for a few unintentional laughs, particularly from the dubbing (listen to the director of the "Green Hornet" show - he's a riot) and parts of the melodramatic story. What few fight scenes there are aren't very impressive.
The DVD from Goodtimes has the obviously widescreen movie cropposed to full frame. It looks abominable, really faded with many scratches, but it's a budget disc that I found for $2 at Wal-Mart, so why should I complain?

1 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee: EXPLOIATATION of A Dragon Story.......2005-01-31

Having watched this film from start to finish I am convinced that CD Now should give us the option of voting 0-1/2. Considering this "MOCKUMENTARY" isn't worth a whole paragraph...the whole movie can be summed up as follows: (1)The 1st fraction of the movie touches on Lee's college life, marriage, opening of a kung-fu school, and early film career, and (2) The rest of the movie is GARBAGE...Lee's pretty much portrayed as an infidel and emotionless adulterer who forsook his wife and kids to be with Betty Ting Pei and appeared to love her more than his own family. And the closing credits have Bety Ting Pei appearing to be the victim/widow as she walks alone on the beach. TRASH...a cruel joke. What's worst is the fact that Lee Roy Lung(Bruce Li) was supposed to have idolized Bruce Lee and wanted to carry on his legacy, yet he was a part of the TRASH! No love for this one.

3 out of 5 stars probably the most factual of all the Bruce Lee biopics.......2004-05-27

Despite the poor acting and dialouge, this film does show alot of things that really happened to Bruce Lee. When Bruce goes back to Hong Kong to find work as an actor, he really was offered $200 a month when he wanted $10,000. The 1st director of the "Big Boss" was a loud mouthed sissy who cussed and screamed at all the actors. Another fact was that Mrs Lo Wei (the wife of the director of the Big Boss) did indeed get Bruce Lee his first film role and got her husband to direct it. All the key characters are portrayed: Raymond Chow, Nora Maio, Lo Wei, Betty Ting Pei. You can pretty much say that this movie has more facts than does "Dragon". Obviously this was the 1st Bruce Lee biopic and this probably was Bruce Li's first film role, because he acted terribly and his martial arts sucked. But don't get down on Bruce Li, he really is a good martial artist and decent actor. I give it 3 stars because the facts are there but all in all this movie sucks!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars The single worst biographical film I have ever seen.......2003-10-03

Bruce Lee: A Dragon Story is nothing short of horrible. It supposedly provides us a biographical look at the life, career, and death of the great Bruce Lee, yet half the time it doesn't even seem to have anything to do with him. I could not make heads or tails out of anything this "mockumentary" related, and what little light it does shine on the man is rather unfavorable. This story says absolutely nothing about Lee's fighting style, his personal philosophy, or anything else. After a few scenes from an early film or two in Hong Kong, no specific film is ever even mentioned; thus, nothing is revealed about the entertainment side of Lee's life and career. I was never sure who the business associates that plod through the story actually were; I'm not even sure how many of the "facts" presented here are actually even remotely true. And don't get me started on the dubbing. This feature has the worst dubbing I have ever heard in my life. The actors themselves look pretty untalented going about the motions onscreen, but the dubbing is atrocious. It is as if the speakers can read English words but have no comprehension of the meaning of any single one of them, and a couple of the voice actors scream every single one of their lines. In all honesty, I can't name one good thing about Bruce Lee: A Dragon Story. It is uninformative to the Bruce Lee novice and anathema to the Bruce Lee fan.

1 out of 5 stars Dragon????? Story???????.......2001-05-22

I don't think so! What is it about these types of pseudo-documentary releases that the manufacturers think that they can throw a "cool"(?) sounding name and some flashy pictures on the cover and fool us into buying this tripe? Poor Bruce Lee would be spinning in his grave (If he's really dead that is!), at the thought of his life being exploited in this way! Certainly many superstars and celebreties have had lame "tributes" released in their names but surely poor Mr Lee has to be the most sinned against! This release being an example of such! How many times can the limited footage be re-hashed and recycled in such a frustrating way???? Theres nothing new here, no insights, no revelations, no interest! If you want to know Bruce Lee, watch his movies. For more, watch the movie he wanted to, but never got the chance to make.... "The Magic Flute" starring David Carradine (who also robbed him of "HIS" series "Kung Fu") Or just watch "Dragon- The Bruce Lee Story" for the basic outline followed by a better and more enlightening documentary, "Death By Misadventure" which as a bonus also includes a look at his son, Brandon and his brief but worthy career! Steer clear of this twaddle. Its cheap because its "CHEAP"!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR DIE HARD BRUCE LI FANS.......2003-11-03

This early Bruce Li movie is a biography of Bruce Lee but a very ill researched one. When Bruce Li made this movie, he apparently wasn't very good at martial arts and like all of his other movies that were made around the same time as this one, the fight choreography is awful. Some of the far too few fight scenes feature Li wearing a hair piece and these fights appear to be cribbed from another movie. There are two versionsof this film. The other one is now impossibly rare and is entitled "The Bruce Lee Story" which features a completely different dialogue track. The "Bruce Lee A Dragon Story" is reccomended. To be honest, I don't reccomend the film at all unless you're a big Bruce Li fan
