    2 out of 5 stars Really disappointing..........2007-02-06

Even though this film ends with a decent fight scene, most of it is drawn out and pointless. Sure Trunks and Goten can be amusing, but this is too much. Not only that, Broly comes across as a real dufuss in this one - the endless repetition of his grunted one line gets really annoying and in itself merits the whooping that he gets in the end. Broly was a ruthless villian bent on destruction in his first appearance, but he just kind 'floats around' in this one not really doing much of anything. I'd like to say that there is hope, but Bio Broly is even worse...

3 out of 5 stars Something for Hardcore DBZ fans.......2006-11-29

In all respects this film was not as good as the first Brolly film, nor many of the other films, like Lord Slug, History of Trunks, and Coolers Revenge. In fact it merely acts as a continuation of the DBZ world for the hard core fans, broader anime fans won't enjoy it as much. This is brought on by the meandering nature that comes across from the positioning of the central characters of Kid Trunks; Goten; and Videl, who are looking for the Dragon Balls. Theres alot of familiar humour that ardent DBZ fans will enjoy. And the climax is the usual, though the battle between Teen Gohan and Brolly is ok.

A film for deep seatd Dragon Ball Z. I'd much more recommend Cooler's Revenge, probably because of the great rock and metal sound track with Disturbed and Drowning Pool.

    Broly: Second Coming

    INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.

    OVERVIEW:
This is the tenth the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies.

    THE STORY:
It's been seven years since the defeat of Cell. Goku has long since died, and with his rival dead, Vegeta's interest in combat is diminished. Goten and Trunks have teamed up with Videl, and are out searching for the Dragon Balls. After rescuing a girl planned to be a sacrifice for a village, everything goes horribly wrong.

Broly survived his assault from Goku on New Vegeta. Following the fight, his pod crash landed on Earth in a pond. The pond froze over. But when Broly heard Goten crying, since his crying is exactly the same as baby Goku's crying that drove him mad, he is reawakened.

Now Goten and Trunks must face off against the toughest foe they've ever faced. Even when Gohan enters the battle, things still seem unlikely.

    REVIEW OF STORY:
Broly didn't need a sequel, especially not one that totally defiled what his first movie originally stood for. While the first Broly movie was dramatic and gave tremendous insight to the history of the Saiyan race, this one seems like a joke. Anything that focuses on Goten and Trunks is going to be more on the comical side, always. Fortunately, the film still provides a nice mix of humor and action alike (some of the things Trunks does to Broly are going to have you laughing yourself silly.) An otherwise mediocre film is redeemed by a great ending I'm not going to spoil for you. Only get this one if you're a huge fan of the series, or you want to find out how the Broly storyline continues.

    OFFICIAL?
Since the first Broly movie wasn't canon, his sequels are automatically fake. However, this movie and its sequel could have taken place right around the time before the World Tournament prior to the arrival of Babidi took place. But for that to work, the first Broly movie would have to have taken place, which doesn't fit into the storyline at all. So ultimately I have to say this film isn't canon.

    REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Some more recent DVDs have character profiles, though these are lacking and could have been written better. Why couldn't get get interviews with cast and crew, or trivia/facts, something like that? FUNimation has a lot of room to improve on the DVDs.

    THE DUBBED VERSION:
Lots of people tend to bash FUNimation's dub of the Dragon Ball Z series? Why? It's inaccurate and sometimes just plain stupid. They can do good dubbed versions for plenty of other animes, such as Full Metal Alchemist, but every time they've tried dubbing Toriyama's classic, they butcher it to hell. The nu metal they put in as background music only further defiles the original series. Stick with the uncut subbed track.

    OVERALL:
Overall this is a decent package, but not one of the better movies. Get it only if you want to see the continuation of the Broly story, or if you're a completist who wants all the Z movies.

    EDITION NOTES:
All three Broly movies were reissued in a cheap, affordable three pack! Get the three pack, because you'll be getting three movies for the price of one

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect.......2006-08-12

If you thought the most sinister villian in the universe was destroyed.... Think again. Broly, who apparently met his end in the diabolical explosion of the Planet "New Vegeta" escaped in a Saiyan Space pod. The sinister menace landed on the planet known as earth, home to his worst enemy: Son Goku. There, Broly was encased in a sheet of ice and slept. But when he awakens from this slumber he will go on an unstoppable rampage.... Young Trunks, Son Goten and Videl are on a quest to obtain 7 mystical artifacts known as the Dragon Balls. When the sleeping Broly hears Son Goten's cries, it brings back a memory of when he and Son Goku were just babies: and Broly awakens. Broly easily defeats Son Goten and Trunks with such power that even Majin Buu might tremble in a dark world o nothing but fear. Brash young warrior Son Gohan appears just in time to combat the menace.... but Broly is filled with nothing but pure rage, and even trying his best, the bold warrior falls to the Saiyan menace. Son Gohan pulls out the last trick in his bag: the Kamehameha wave. Son Goten also appears to help, but Broly's most powerful attack over powers them. Goten makes a wish inside his mind: and having all 7 Dragon Balls: Son Goku appears. He, Son Gohan and Son Goten use the power of togetherness to blast Broly into oblivion. And so peace reigns once again.... at least for now....

5 out of 5 stars A different type of Martial Arts film from a Huge Romantic.......2007-06-11

I loved this movie. Wow no more sad or depressing ending!!!! Finally love prevails. I am huge fan of Martial Art movies but someone always dies or misses an opportunity for love. This movie was great.

    2 out of 5 stars "Blindie, where's your chicken?".......2007-04-11

'The White Dragon' tells the story of how an overly proud young girl named the Black Phoenix gains the powers of the White Dragon and becomes an [...]. After becoming White Dragon junior, she gets her first pimple and this is heartbreaking for her. Unlike most wuxias, this is more of a comedy. The dramatic scenes are mostly reserved for Francis Ng who plays an [...] himself named Chicken Feathers. While he is blind and his character blatantly copies Zatoichi, it still works because Francis Ng is such a great actor. Chicken Feathers is looking to assassinate the second prince and White Dragon junior loves him so she challenges Chicken Feathers to a duel in order to save the prince. Chicken Feathers wins quite easily yet doesn't kill her. WD junior and the former WD now look to outwit him. She finally realizes Chicken Feathers is a kind person and finds out he isn't quite what he seems to be.

This movie is obviously made in the vein of 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and 'Hero' and the action is somewhat similiar. Luckily, they do put some creativity into it and it is quite good. I don't like "wire-fu" that much, except when it's done right like in this movie. The action is very sparse, but good when it happens.

What makes this so different is the odd comedy and mixing in modern day life like rollerblading. The modern day injected moments don't work, but I liked the comedy very much. There is a scene at the beginning of the movie that is hilarious where WD junior is playing various instuments and ends her show by slamming a stringed instrument up against a wall like Jimi Hendrix. I also loved the scene where Chicken Feathers finds out he is good looking.

The first 30 minutes are exciting, but the rest of the movie I found hard to sit through. I loved the comedy, but there is not enought of it. The movie just moves along too slow and has a hard time deciding whether it wants to be comedic or serious. The boredom is interrupted by the great acting of Francis Ng a few times, but not enough.

    2.5/5

The DVD from Sony Entertainment has perfect picture quality and good 5.1 Cantonese audio. It also has an English and French dub in 5.1 which I didn't listen to. And the subtitles are very well written.

5 out of 5 stars How Phoenix Black Becomes the White Dragon and Falls in Love.......2007-03-27

I never expected to discover a martial arts film that was funny. This film is humorous and contains satire along with tremendously effective martial arts scenes. There is a great story line and plot, a romantic love triangle with some tension, beautiful scenery, and great cinematography with long shots of fighting in a bamboo forest, along with very creative photography of fight scenes looking down from the bamboo trees onto the fighters. At times, there is the feeling of a video game in progress because occasionally the acting is somewhat exaggerated to emphasize a specific scene, plus there is the insertion of two crossed swords onto the screen, prior to or during a fight. The music within this film is most enjoyable. Different musical styles accompany various scenes which enhances the feeling and sensitivity of the moment. There is Spanish flamenco music, classical music, some Mediterranean Italian sounding music, and extraordinairy flute playing throughout the film.

The characters are developed with great style and creativity. There is Phoenix Black, a pretty and talented female student who plays two musical instruments, the flute and the lute, and dances very sensitively and provocatively. By chance she encounters the blind assassin in the forest, who hears her flute music and is captivated both by her music as well as her fighting skills. Although the assassin is viewed as a criminal, in reality he is doing a service for the community because he only kills corrupt people ... He also shares whatever bounty he collects with the poor.

Phoenix encounters the assassin again at her school where Auntie, the cleaning lady (who in reality is a great fighter) ends up nearly being defeated by the assassin. This great elderly lady martial artist's name includes the word "Dragon". She suffered near fatal injuries during her fight with the blind assassin, she fears she is dying and quickly downloads her special powers to Phoenix who then becomes "The White Dragon". Phoenix fights the assassin on the school grounds where the assassin is even more impressed by her skills and effective powers/techniques. It turns out, the assassin had a goal: to kill the principle of the school who was discovered to have been fondling the female students. The principle signed a confession to this misdeed before he was killed.

The students are in an uproar after finding out the Principle was killed and the reason why. Two rival cliques of female students huddle together discussing the strange events of the night before. The cook at the school, named Gene, provides some humourous insights into how it is known when the blind assassin strikes. Gene reveals his discovery, there are always chicken feathers left at every crime where the assassin has struck. Gene has studied the matter thoroughly. He even names the types of chickens whose feathers are floating in the air, after the assassin has left.

Phoenix does a solo performance at the school. She plays the lute and does a very beautiful sensual Chinese dance where she captures the attention of the local King's son, Prince Tian Yong. His father rules the territory and they want to bring the assassin to justice. Later she has a date with the Prince where besides playing the lute and flute for him, they play tennis and roller skate. Later unfortunately, Phoenix ends up fighting the blind assassin and during one highly stylized martial arts encounter, she fractures a leg. The assassin takes pity on her and brings her to his home located on a beautiful lake. When she plays her flute, he falls in love with her. The blind assassin makes her food, creates crutches for her and even builds a wheelchair from wood. She acts petulant and spoiled. She tricks him into buying paper, pen, and ink. She writes letters to Prince Tian which are sent by carrier pigeon. She explains her absence with a white lie, telling him she is on tour performing with the school's music and dance troupe. Eventually, her heart is awakened to the plight of the blind assassin and she becomes more open and caring towards him. She asks him to tell his story, of how he became blind. It is a touching and sensitive tale. She develops empathy toward him.

Despite her tender feelings toward the blind assassin, the plot thickens and through a highly crafted story-line and in well developed scenes, Phoenix manages to escape from the blind assassin. The assassin is captured by the army of the local warlord/king. Phoenix is torn between trying to save the life of the blind assassin who had treated her well during captivity or to resume the romance with Prince Tian, who inherited the throne from his father. Prince Tian has become the local ruler - his plans are clear: the blind assassin must be put to death for his crimes. The suspense and drama is immense as Phoenix is forced to choose between the blind assassin and her boyfriend, the new ruler of the realm. Amazingly, chicken feathers provide the the major clue to helping Phoenix resolve her personal conflict and they play a major role in saving the life of the blind assassin. This is a most highly recommended film. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]

4 out of 5 stars NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY........2006-10-04

If you want to see this movie remember to tell your self this "This is not Hero or House of Flying Daggers." this movie is baiscally a light hearted comedy with very little action. This movie also focuses on the romance more than anything else. So if you have high expectation that this movie is going to be epic the you a setting your self up for a huge disapointment. But if you keep in mind to what I wrote here and keep your expectations low then you will most likely enjoy this movie. Rememeber DON"T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.

    2 out of 5 stars eh.......2006-09-22

Wasn't impressed by this movie at all. It's half martial arts flick, half comedy but not good at either really.

Who should buy this movie: If you like Cecelia Cheung or movies like the Promise, Legend of Zu (or warriors of zu mountain whichever the new one is called), or Wu Yen then you might like this movie. Otherwise I'd skip it.

4 out of 5 stars Its above average.......2006-09-03

This movie is somewhat above average. It's not great, but its good for a movie that uses CGI heavily (and, as many movies like 'jurassic park' and the american 'godzilla' have proven, using CGI usually results in a rubbish movie)

There's some interesting characters in the cast but unortunately a lot of the focus is on the main characters, who are some of the least interesting of the whole cast.

Something that adds to the credibility of this movie is that the dragon eats people. See, if the dragon simply breathed fire over people and incinerated them, there would be no point to that, which in turn means that it would be stupid. At least having the dragon eat people gives a reason why the dragon would kill people.

4 out of 5 stars In this corner! Dean "Superman" Caine - VS - a Dragon!.......2006-08-12

    I really love this movie.

Is it because I wasn't expecting too much? Maybe. But I've watched it now several more times and it really holds up under repeated viewings.

Dean Caine trades in his superhero spandex & cape for a helicopter playing the new head of security for a super secret underground lab. Using powers of deduction which would make the Man of Steel kryptonite green with envy, Caine soon realizes he's guarding a lab full of genetic engineers attempting to revive & reconstruct those high flying, fire breathing creatures of legend - dragons.

The cast is full of fun B movie type actors who infuse the required fun & fright factor into an equally solid script. This isn't Dragonslayer, nor is it Dragonheart or even Reign of Fire - this is Sci-Fi Channel produced low budget fare, but it delivers a lot of bang for the buck. The director goes a little overboard with his stylish split screen action at times, however it's never really annoying.

So then let's see. Terri Hatcher, former girlfriend of Superman Dean Caine is fighting female dragons over on Desperate Housewives and Dean Caine is fighting "real" lab produced dragons in this flick. Looks like their careers are paralleling each other's nicely, wouldn't you say?

1 out of 5 stars Dean Cain completely ruins this movie.......2006-07-22

Some scientists in an underground lab are experimenting with DNA and create a dragon which gets loose and stalks them around the facility. The setting is appropriately claustrophobic and the sets are done quite well. The CGI dragon looks passable, not great but believable enough I guess. The characters are all pretty good - EXCEPT Dean Cain. He's the security guard, and he's a pompous, self-righteous prick. His knowledge of childhood fairy tales makes him more knowledgeable about dragons than all the scientists put together. He single handedly makes this movie absolutely unwatchable. That's too bad because without him, I think this might have been pretty good. Well, if not for the fact that the idiot director has a fetish for that split screen effect where they show four different scenes running simultaneously in the four different quadrants of the screen. Even that would have only been a one star deduction from what could have been a four star movie, but Dean ruins the whole thing.

    Recommendation: Skip it.

    1 out of 5 stars horrid.......2006-07-04

I love dragons, and I love dragon movies, I also like B grade movies, but this one is bad. The acting was woeful, I mean really really bad, the story was ok. I tried and tried to like this movie, but I just couldn't.

It might of been because of lack of money, but the same shot of the dragon over and over, flipped and played again was a bit much.

The over use of multiple split-screen shots got a bit annoying, they work well when done right, but in this move they where done all wrong.

If I where you I would stay clear of this one, but then again watching this will make other bad movies better....

4 out of 5 stars DRAGONSLAYER meets ALIEN.......2006-05-16

Several people are trapped in an underground laboratory with a 12-foot tall, fire-breathing, man-eating dragon.Does that sound cool? It is. But don't be expecting a dozen Apache Longbows to be going after the dragon like on the front cover.

The special effects are so-so, I've seen much better but I've also seen worse. The dragon is pretty cool and fairly well rendered. However, the acting and writing are quite bad. And when I say bad, I mean BAD.

Despite its large flaws, I found DRAGON FIGHTER to be loads of fun. I you like B-Movies, then this is for you. If you don't stay far away.

I hope there will be an X-treme Fighter 2!

    4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2005-05-20

It is a little confusing because the star is not really Lorenzo Lamas but Don "The Dragon" Wilson. Lorenzo is in it, but a smaller part.

The sory is (Wilson) must save his son from a video game by fighting ,and winning each level. It's kind of fun to watch a who's who of fighters meet wilson at each level. The only real suspense comes from guessing who he will meet at each level, based on who's in the credits.

    Overall it's fun.

4 out of 5 stars X-treme Fighter That Dan Mayid is great!.......2005-05-19

I loved the story it was a new aspect showing different martial artists. Brad played by Dan Mayid, is awesome. His techniques look outstanding. I hope he makes more movies! I think he's gonna be the new Karate Kid! Can't wait for x-treme fighter 2

5 out of 5 stars Gotta see Dan Mayid in this Movie!.......2005-05-18

As a 4th Degree Black Belt, I have to say that I have been a fan of martial arts films for quite some time so it was great to see a new movie with an interesting plot and cool special effects. This is a must see for anyone interested in the martial arts or in a good action movie. The son in the Movie, played by martial artist Dan Mayid, steals the show. I think he is the true star of the film. His fight scenes are more believable then anyone in the film and his acting really brings you into his character's story. Dan Mayid will be the future of Martial Arts films. BUY IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Double the dragons, double the action!!!!!!!!.......2003-06-18

Aside from the horendus acting, inane filming, absurd plot, and a usless director, this movie is RAAAAAADDD!!!! At times the directer of this F-Movie must have been on drugs. This is evident due to the films overall lack of a little thing called a plot. In this movie the story follows wang, a complete master of fighting. He is hired to protect the governments money but is ambushed then saved by a mysterious man. The man is really an evil conspiratist, waiting for his chance to take the govenments property. He kills wang and steels his daugter but lets his son go. The son is raised in the wilderness and seeks training from an old geezer with a muschdash. After his training is complete the goes to face the evil kil( the man who murdured his father).
He goes about his buisness by sending kil threatening letters, as he makes his move he meets another man that shares his apperance and his mission. They kick, punch, and fly through hords of kils minnions. Finaly one dragon dies but the other lives on. He faces kil and his deadly hair, eventually killing him. Then kil meets his father who was suposed to be dead and kils daughter who was realy Dragons sister. They walk off into the forest a family once again.........genus.

2 out of 5 stars Buy It, Then Store It on Your Bottom Shelf.......2002-11-12

The DVD transfer on this film is usually dark, or at times like a day in which heavy clouds move in front of the sun, casting shadows. During those fleeting moments when the shadows abate, you get a sense of how good the transfer might have been.

The classic kung-fu plot of revenge is played out rather unevenly--trying, I think, to accomplish too much with too little. None of the characters seem to develop, although the film attempts to over-develop them with insufficient scripting and feeble story lines.

The soundtrack, using exerpts from, among other things, the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" theme song (while the hero travels alone and misses his father) and 1960-ish ensemble jazz (during some of the fight scenes), intensifies the film's inability to suspend the viewer's disbelief (unless it is this viewer's incredulity at having purchased the film, then having watched it through to its conclusion).

The fight scenes were generally unrealistic, with blows and kicks from the given camera angle missing their targets by as much a foot or more (that's 12 inches, not to be confused with the five-toed appendage that the kicker wields). The fighting styles portrayed were rather stiff and "slow" looking, giving one renewed appreciation for the likes of really talented artists, like Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Gordon Liu, Jackie Chan, etc.

If for nothing else, this film is worth watching just to see the coloration of the villian's hair (I won't spoil the surprise for you), and the way he uses it in the final fight scene. In addition, the dubbing has a decidedly Old Western-sounding flair which actually makes the film strangely endearing.

Despite all these anomalies which, by the way, typify the movie in its entirety, I will no doubt watch the movie again, somewhere down the road, being an inveterate fan of this movie genre which, I believe, belies an underlying bent toward masochism.

I can think of a host of kung-fu movies I would rather have purchased than this one, knowing what I now know about it. And I would certainly not recommend that a kung-fu movie neophyte make it one of his/her first, critical purchases, either. Although I did not dislike this film enough, nor perhaps have sense enough, to discard it, I will consign it to the bottom shelf of my budding kung-fu library.

      **POST SCRIPT**
I watched the movie again last weekend (blush). In terms of a "good" bad kung-fu movie, this is it. Those characteristics of poor filming, tired plot, poor acting, incongruent dubbing and less than thrilling fight scenes--those things that us die-hard addicts to this genre will routinely put up with in the quest for a moment of plausible kung-fu entertainment--all coexist, in excess, in this film; but I still could not bring myself to get rid of it. Who knows? It may become a "classic" in its own right, within the ranks of "Grade B" grade B martial arts films.
