Upon its release in 1981, John Irvin's version of Peter Straub's bestselling horror novel was deemed one of the worst adaptations that the genre had ever produced. Now it's available on DVD, and for the first time in widescreen presentation, and not much has changed. It's still a nearly unwatchable dud. Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play old friends, members of the self-created Chowder Society, who get together and tell ghost tales. The scariest story of all, however, is the one they never speak to each other. Fifty years ago, the four men accidentally killed a young woman, and now she's back (with much less meat on her bones) and seeking vengeance. Sound chilling? Well, in Straub's hands it was, and the novel remains the author's finest achievement. Irvin, however, distills Staub's rich characterizations, gradual tension, and creepy atmosphere, and replaces them with aging golden oldies (only Houseman appears to be having any fun) hamming it up and hokey special-effect shots of a rotting corpse. The film moves about as quickly as its ancient cast could during a relay race. The whole thing has arthritis. --Dave McCoy

HOT, GORY SST.......2007-03-13
Ghost Story is an interesting horror movie that could have been better. Despite the perpetual nudity in the middle of this motion picture, it is apparent that several scenes and minutes were edited from the original script. It is understandable why the ghost was seeking revenge but how and why she took the avenues she did to attempt her revenge albeit retribution for the wrongs committed decades before left me filling in several holes.
Much discussion has been focused on corpses and rotting flesh, and quite a bit of it is featured. However, another central theme is the disastrous consequences that can result from succumbing to the proverbial weaknesses of the flesh.
Don Wanderley, the protagonist, is a well-educated but an apparently financially insecure individual who initially is on the right track teaching literature courses at a small liberal arts college, a location where just as he is forming a relationship with an academic contemporary he, unfortunately, also meets the dean's new secretary, who turns out to be the evil ghost, on her first day at work.
The secretary, who later introduces herself as Alma Mobley, is played by the elegant Alice Krige and is a siren who occupies Wanderley's mind immediately upon their first encounter. By the end of the day, Wanderley and Mobley have gone out on a dinner date that leads to a night of passionate lovemaking.
After that evening, Wanderley's life is headed for a downward spiral. As the story develops, he has by and large abandoned his academic responsibilities as well as the aforementioned female colleague who might have complemented him as a spouse. Mobley, that woman who quickly entered his life thanks to her alluring physical traits, is starting to make lifestyle demands, which are ultimately disclosed as pieces of a long range plan to, in ghostly form, avenge her murder that was committed fifty years before and was kept secret by and among four gentleman, one of whom was Wanderley's father.
And as the demands increase, the more eerie and apparently psychotic Wanderley finds Alma Mobley to be. As events transpire, Wanderley, having finally seen a destructive pattern that has suddely invaded and overtaken his life, is in a quagmire. He resolves to rectify his situations, and upon action realizes that in spite of the destruction that has already been incurred, much more trouble, which will include scenes of murder, will lie ahead.
Furthermore, the movie adaptation of Ghost Story is a moral tale in its own right. It is very understandable why Wanderley, especially being a young, single man, surrendered so easily to the temptations of Alma. However, he ended up becoming involved with a woman who, to the degree that she was attractive physically, was, to the same extent, unattractive psychologically.
All in all, Ghost Story is an ultimately disturbing personification of why beauty is more than skin deep and why one should never judge anything merely at the surface level, especially when there is so much at stake!
A guilty pleasure to say the least.......2007-03-06
I am a horror movie fan and I do like B horror flicks. I orginally got this movie to see Craig Wasson nude and nude he was in this movie. What I did get was Craig and a good story to go along with it. This movie was genuinely creepy and scarey at times during the movie. I did think that the movie was told in a very strange way, not a bad way, just a strange way. To me, it was a little disjointed and confusing at times. I did like the movie though and found it to be intriguely different. I do recommned this movie to anyone that likes a complex horror movie.
Where did those goose bumps come from?.......2007-01-16
With all the spooky movies and monster movies and even the grind up movies like "Fargo" (1996), you would think you would be desensitized to this sort of thing?
With older movies like "The Deadly Mantis" (1957) you would see a few soap bubbles and you know that the native will so be munchies. But this one is down right creepy. And talk about tension, this movie builds and builds but you have no idea what it is building until it is too late.
The first clue that this is going to be a good movie is the cast list, which includes, but is not limited to, Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman, and Patricia Neal "The Fountainhead" (1949). And where did they find the sexy and exciting Alice Krige (also of Star Trek "Borg Queen" fame)? She could attack me anytime.
Guess I should mention that the plot line was good also.
Alice Krige is Ghost Story's Greatest Assest.......2007-01-11
I have always been a fan of Alice Krige although most don't know her by name. She is sadly underrated and under appreciated. She really held this film together along with Fred Astaire who is always a pleasure to watch. Some may recognize Krige as the head Borg in the film "First Contact" and her riviting appearance in Stephen King's "Sleepwalkers." It's amazing how little this actress has changed in 25 years. She is still a very beautiful woman and is still acting. She recently appeared as the lead evil doer in "Silent Hill." She is a fine actress who has built a nice little following for herself in her long but quiet career.
As far as the rest of this film. I generally liked it. It's just an old-fashioned spooky tale that unfolds slowly. In fact, too slowly at times, hence the three stars rating I gave it. It reminds me of the less gore-filled films of its era like "Burnt Offerings" which was another really good but under appreciated film in its time. This film relies more on atmosphere, mystery, ocassional outright scary moments, and, most importantly, on Alice Krige's character. If not for her wonderful performance, this film might not nearly be so memorable. This film isn't for everyone, especially the younger crowd that might like graphic "Final Destination" (which I loved) or the gross "House of 1,000 Corpses," (which I hated), but for those into errie, atmospheric films, then this one is for you.
Ghost Story (...this one is not for a nervous disposition).......2006-12-19
Actually, I thought this "GHOST" film was excellent. The acting was good and it really had so many shock moments in it. I watched it alone and wished I hadn't! Brilliant film. I would recommend it for the constipated among you!!
Wonderful story, great SpecialFX. A definite must for horror fans.

Pundits often make parallels between America's involvement in Iraq and the nightmare that was Vietnam; director-writer-producer David Zeiger's Sir! No Sir! does it too. But while the comparisons are generally apt (both conflicts are known as "quagmires," became hugely unpopular with the public, and inflicted serious political damage on the presidents who presided over them), this documentary makes a vital distinction: namely, that some of the most vocal and active opponents of the Vietnam War were the very soldiers who fought in it. These are haunted men who went to Southeast Asia because it was their duty, perhaps even because they saw it as the right thing to do, only to become sorely disillusioned when they witnessed the horrible injuries, the villages bombed for little or no reason, the civilians tortured and killed, and various other horrors that took place "in country." Some, like the so-called Nine for Peace, formed GI protest groups while still on active duty in Vietnam; some went AWOL (there were reportedly 500,000 incidents of desertion); a great many, including soldiers who refused to be deployed to 'Nam at all, were court-martialed and imprisoned in military stockades like San Francisco's Presidio, while still others returned home, joined movements like Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and published virulent underground newspapers. All of this is delivered via personal anecdotes, photos, and occasional file footage. The material is undoubtedly compelling, but Sir! No Sir! pretty much makes its point in the first half hour, rendering the final hour somewhat tedious. And that's not even including the nearly two hours of accompanying bonus material. Most of the latter consists of extended interviews based on what we've already seen in the main program; there's also a look at the Winter Soldier inquiry (the subject of a separate documentary), as well as a joint appearance by "Hanoi Jane" Fonda, Vietnam's most infamous celebrity protester, and Cindy Sheehan, who became an anti-war activist after her son was killed in Iraq in 2004. --Sam Graham
Description
Easily the most timely and resonant film about the soldiers on the front lines of antiwar resistance, the award-winning breakout theatrical hit SIR! NO SIR! Tells an almost entirely forgotten story of the military men and women who helped force the U.S. government to end the Vietnam War. Contrary to the popular image of long-haired hippies spitting on returning soldiers, SIR! NO SIR! vividly demonstrates that GIs were the heart and soul of the anti-war movement. Poignantly narrated by a diverse cast of veteran GI resisters who recall the ferocious days of peace marches and stiff jail sentences, SIR! NO SIR! pulls no punches in its raw depiction of the power of people, especially those in uniform. Directed by David Zeiger, SIR! NO SIR! is "powerful stuff, offering us not only a new look at the past, but to the unavoidably relevant insights into the present" (New York Daily News).

A documentary that should be seen by everyone in the military.......2007-06-19
Sir! No Sir! is one of the best documentaries produced about the Vietnam War. In light of the emerging soldier's resistance to the Iraq War, this documentary shows us where anti-war energy should be focused. See this documentry, than read The Deserter's Tale: The Story of an Ordinary Soldier Who Walked Away from the War in Iraq.
so moving.......2007-06-11
i don't have additional factual information to add to the excellent reviews already posted. i'll just say i viewed this last night and found it so moving and inspiring i can't stop thinking about the subjects of this film, what they endured and their incredible service to humankind. the personal risk they undertook is almost unimaginable. note that several commented they were not even aware there was a GI antiwar movement to support their actions.
i do want to add that besides the fascinating subject matter this documentary is extremely well done. the pacing keeps you riveted and the production overall is excellent. highest recommendation.
A story retreived from the dustbin of history.......2007-05-03
This documentary is a necessary corrective to the widely held perception that the Vietnam anti-war movement was anti-soldier. In fact, a key component of the anti-war movement was the soldiers. As early as 1965, highly decorated "lifers", who joined the armed services convinced they were doing their duty to their country, began speaking out against the war, refusing orders, and faced court-martials to stop the war in Vietnam. As one former Green Beret said, "I was doing my job right, but I wasn't doing right." By 1969 war resistance among GIs, which had started as individual acts of defiance spread among draftees "in country" and among vets returning home, and emerged as a crucial component of the anti-war movement. So much so that even the US military had to concede that the majority of US troops were anti-war.
Sir, No, Sir is a very well done documentary that weaves together interviews, news footage, and commentary about the "forgotten" anti-war movement--the GI coffee house movement, the underground GI press, and the "alternative" USO-style shows that featured an anti-war message that was tailored to the soldiers' expereince. It closes with some parting shots on how the GI anti-war movement was "erased" from popular memory through films like Hamburger Hill and Rambo--which situate the anti-war movement as being anti-soldier.
The extras on the DVD are also quite interesting. Of particular interest is the interview with the infamous "Dave Rabbitt." Years ago, I received a copy of a recording of a "pirate" radio station in Vietnam and had often wondered about its authenticity. This film confirmed that briefly an unofficial radio station (Radio First Termer-FM69), which was "for the troops" but against the war, operated in the Phan Rang area of Vietnam. It broadcast "hard acid-rock music" for the "first-termers and non-reenlistees" in Vietnam. An interesting story in and of itself, and just one part of the forgotten anti-war movement.
War resisters speak out.......2007-04-15
A most-important film about the GIs who resisted the war on Viet Nam while inside the military and in the country itself. Fragging of COs was not unusual, leaving Nixon to pull out ground troups and send major air strikes to this torn country .. A must see for all people who think they recall or have read about the resistance against this war.
Send a soldier this film.......2007-03-01
I doubt that there is any better act of global citizenship that you can take at this very moment than to purchase this film, watch it, lend it to friends, host a viewing of it in your neighborhood, school, or workplace, and then send it to an active duty soldier you know who is serving in the United States military, or even in Iraq or Afganistan.
"A single spark can start a prarie fire..." And this film gives off more than a single spark.

Not one of the best documentary on this subject.......2007-02-06
Apart from revealing the identity of the famous informer of the Washington Post, in the Watergate investigation, this is not a very good documentary. The narrative style is somehow superficial, lacking a real insight in the matter, almost exclusively concentrating on the character of "deep throat" as if we were looking at a Hollywood star biography, rather than a simple piece of a more complicated and important plot. In the end the documentary focuses on an important yet secondary character of the story. Putting "deep throat" in the center of your "solar system" instead of President Nixon, alters the whole balance of the narration, loosing the proper perspective and therefore the necessary historical depth, making this account of Watergate a sideshow of a sideshow.

Description
Many people believe the U.S. government is not telling the truth about it's involvement in the retrieval of a crashed UFO in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania in 1965.
If a UFO did crash from the sky, was it man-made, an alien spacecraft from another world, or was the story only a hoax? People who live in Kecksburg still wonder what it was that caused the military, police, and local firefighters to respond so quickly to this rural community.
Follow the events of December 9th, 1965, with UFO Investigator Stan Gordon as twenty-one witnesses describe what they saw, the news media's involvement and the military's mysterious removal of a UFO to an unknown Air Force base where all traces of this event disappeared in secrecy.

KECKSBURG: A Good UFO Mystery.......2007-04-21
KECKSBURG: THE UNTOLD STORY is an adequate-enough documentary, that is, if you don't mind sitting and watching witness testimonies for 90 minutes. On the other hand, if you're looking for a fancy UFO DVD with special digital effects and witness account reenactments, you'll have to look elsewhere (See the UNSOLVED MYSTERIES UFO DVD COLLECTION for a good reenactment segment on Kecksburg). This documentary would have been just as satisfactory if it were presented in an AUDIO format, because the DVD video contributes NOTHING visually to the story. The witness accounts, however, are very interesting and the KESCKSBURG incident intriguing. Undoubtedly something was covered up. A meteor? I don't think so.
Unique UFO story on DVD.......2005-03-01
Though the content seems a little "dry" at times, and perhaps isn't as flashy as some of the other UFO videos out there, it does capture a story not often told.
A must-have for the avid UFO buff or someone wanting more information about the events at Kecksburg.
More a documentry than anything else, but will give the viewer insight into past alleged crashes of UFO's, this story is up there with Roswell, but often missed.

If it's Tuesday Knight, this must be "Cover Story"........2005-02-18
"Cover Story" is actually a mildly entertaining film. I like the fact that the movie never turns out to go in the direction that you are expecting. That gives it a slight feeling of freshness, although it cannot overcome the horrendous performance by its lead actor.
Matt, played by William Wallace, moves into a new place and flips through some of the mail intended for the lady who used to live there. He immediately becomes obsessed and starts asking anybody and everybody about her. It turns out that she was quite the trouble-maker and made her share of enemies. A couple of other developments include a mysterious neighbor who falls in love with Matt and a rapper who occasionally appears to show off his skills. All of this is interspersed with Matt having sessions with his therapist.
Leland Orser is delightfully over the top as a very homosexual drug dealer and Christopher McDonald has a short scene playing a bizarre psychic. I have no qualms stating right here that I probably would have enjoyed this film much more were it not for William Wallace. It is interesting to see him listed as a producer of this film. That could explain a lot. Simply put, this guy CANNOT act! He is so unappealing and wooden and such an unabashed jerk in this film that it is virtually impossible to like him.
A final note: the DVD case for this film states that Matt is a journalist who is "covering the story of his life." What?!? He is not a journalist and I have no idea where some of these people who do DVD packaging get their information from. 3/10
